Sankranti – the first festival on Indian calendar, is given due importance the way it is celebrated. Students of Hamstech convey a message about the importance of Solid Waste Management. THREE THINGS I LEARNED FROM THIS ISSUE It’s amazing the way people are becoming more fashion conscious. The recent success of Hyderabad International Fashion Week will certainly show a unique impact. It may be a little less known, but Hyderabadis are catching up with this new concept of being fit and healthy – Hot Yoga. It is every individual’s responsibility to understand and implement required measures to manage solid waste.

Happy New Year Regards,

The split coming after Vanessa stuck by her man’s side through an alleged sexual assault by Kobe in 1993 during a visit to Colorado. LADY GAGA

Top-Earning Singer She was born to be a megastar, apparently. With a staggering $90 million earned in 2011, Lady Gaga made more money than any female singer, by a mile. Taylor Swift was second with half of that total - a paltry $45 million. Katy Perry was right behind Swift with $44 million, while Beyonce Knowles and Rihanna finished off the top five, earning $35 million and $29 million respectively. Gaga’s impressive earnings were mainly due to her tour, which grossed $1.3 million a night, as well the Born This Way singer’s many endorsement deals. The earnings estimates were compiled by Forbes with help from data from Pollstar, RIAA and others; as well as extensive interviews with industry insiders. The totals encompass all aggregate pre-tax income earned from May 2010-May 2011, before expenses, i.e. subtracting agent and manager fees, and so on. The 10 top earning women in music – Lady Gaga, Taylor Swift, Katy Perry, Beyonce, Rihanna, Pink, Carrie Underwood and others.

Stay tuned! Despite the sad, fast end of her fake marriage to Humphries, the superstar insisted she hasn’t ruled out getting married a third time (she was married to Damon Thomas for several years before the Kim Kardashian sex tape with Ray J made her famous. ‘I believe in love always,’ the 31-year-old said. ‘I am just not looking.’ Reportedly, Kardashian has control over Kourtney & Kim Take New York’s content and has gone out of her way to portray herself as the victim in this divorce, something her ex-husband is far from pleased about, considering he thinks the entire marriage was a deception on Kim’s part. ‘He was nothing more than a disposable groom, used for ratings. MANI RATNAM

Signs Lakshmi Manchu

After making her Bollywood debut in Ram Gopal Varma’s Department, she has now signed a prestigious Tamil movie to be directed by Mani Ratnam. It is a well known fact that ace director Mani Ratnam is all set to begin his next project, tentatively titled as Pookadai, soon in Nagercoil. Yesteryear hero Karthik’s son Gautham will make his Kollywood debut through this project while Radha’s daughter Thulasi or Sonam Kapoor is likely to play the female lead. Now the latest buzz is that director has signed Telugu star Mohan Babu’s daughter Lakshmi Manchu to play a prominent role in the film. However it is still unknown what role she will play in this flick. Veteran cinematographer Rajeev Menon and music director A.R. Rahman will reportedly be a part of this project. The actress took Twitter to share her excitement to be part of maverick filmmaker Mani Ratnam’s flick. She wrote, ‘What an amazing day! Launched Tamil film with @itsmemanoj as producer and signed a movie as an actor with Mani Ratnam himself. Doesn’t get bigger.’

THE BUSINESSMAN

With Subtitles

Following the success of Mahesh Babu’s previous movie - Dookudu in USA, where the film reportedly collected 1 million dollars in the first weekend itself, the makers of Mahesh Babu’s new film Businessman have decided to screen the film for the non-Telugu speaking communities in USA with subtitles. This is the first time in Tollywood’s history that a Telugu film is being released in the US with subtitles. Puri Jagannath has finished the shoots of his much-hyped The Businessman in a quick succession. The director has completed the filming in less than 75 days thereby setting an example for the filmmakers, who take years together to finish a film. The Pokiri director says that the shooting has been completed in 74 days. It went smoothly as they planned before. The post-production works have been started and Mahesh Babu will be dubbing for his role from today. Puri Jagannath, who has delivered a series of flop in the recent years, is confident of his forthcoming Telugu film.

DISPUTE!

Samantha & Bellamkonda Suresh In connection with a complaint filed by leading Tollywood producer Bellamkonda Suresh against actress Samantha, alleging that the actress did not allot her dates for his new film even after taking the advance amount, the Producers’ Council recently called for a meeting to sort out the issue. In response to the complaint Samantha said that unacceptable changes had been made in the script and hence she had quit the movie. A source said that after the film’s director Nandini Reddy confirmed Siddharth as the lead actor, the original script underwent a major change. ‘Sid allegedly did not like Sam’s character overriding his role. He reportedly insisted on some changes and Nandini succumbed to the pressure,’ the source said. Samantha said that she was ready to do the film if the producers stuck to the original script.

FERRARI BOSS EYES GLORY

Warns Massa!

Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo is adamant the Scuderia will rise again, saying all the ingredients are in place. The Italian stable had a dismal 2011 campaign by their lofty standards, claiming just one race victory at the British GP. Lacking the pace needed to challenge the Red Bulls, Ferrari also fell behind the McLarens, finishing third in the Constructors’ Championship. Di Montezemolo though, is adamant his team can turn their fortunes around next season. ‘Work is going on in all areas to improve - from the design of the new car, to the simulation work, from preparing for the pit stops, to the starts and so on.’ The 64-year-old, who was speaking at Ferrari’s Christmas lunch, which was attended by all the men and women who work on the racing side for the Maranello Company, also fired a warning shot at one of his own drivers, Felipe Massa. The Brazilian was disappointing this season as he failed to reach the podium and instead only made headlines through his on-track battles with Lewis Hamilton. And his President has warned him that he needs to up his game next year; which could be his last, with Ferrari.

TOM LEWIS

S P O R T S

Rookie Award

Tom Lewis has followed in the footsteps of his home club’s most famous figure, Sir Nick Faldo, by being named as the Sir Henry Cotton Rookie of the Year for 2011. The 20-yearold Englishman from Welwyn Garden City in Hertfordshire claimed the prestigious award 34 years after six-time major champion Faldo also received the accolade before going on to become the most successful English golfer of all time. ‘I appreciate this honour very much! It certainly tops off what has been an amazing year. I think my dad is more excited about me winning this award than my first Tour victory in October! I am very proud to be named The Sir Henry Cotton Rookie of the Year and I feel very fortunate as there were some strong contenders for this title who played consistently well all season’ said Lewis, speaking from the sunshine island of Mauritius where he took part in the Mauritius Open.

VIRAT KOHLI

No Competition To Rohit Virat Kohli doesn’t see any competition with Rohit Sharma on the ongoing Australian tour or in near future as he has little doubt that both would be serving the team in the days to come. ‘We know, in future we are going to play for the team so I don’t see any competition in that, it’s just a matter of who gets to play when, who gets into that zone and start scoring runs. I kept being asked this question - there is always competition for a particular spot in the team. You’ve 2-3 good players waiting to grab the chance.’ While Kohli’s consistency over the past one year has helped him stake claim for the number six spot, Sharma; after his brilliant batting display against the West Indies recently, is giving the Delhi lad competition. ‘Rohit and I have had some good stands together. It’s good for Indian cricket, in future when the situation arises and then we have a better understanding. It’s a healthy competition and it’s good for the team’ – Kohli quoted. 20 JANUARY, 2012

STARING MY DAY WITH COFFEE I wake up at 4 everyday, to have two cups of hot coffee. I make it by myself! I give a break of 15 min. before having the second coffee. This will go on for a half hour. During this time, I don’t want anyone to be around me. Having coffee at this time fills my stomach and sustains me for nearly four hours. I then have a shower, get ready and be in a spiritual mode for 20 minutes (which involves - offering prayers, lighting diyas and incense sticks - in a way to energize all the rooms. I then sit in a state of blankness for a while, without any thought flow in mind.

5:15 I get ready and leave home at this time. My fitness studio is adjoined to my residence which makes it comfortable enough for me. This is where I have my fitness classes. Clients get upset in my absence here, even for a day. Though I train several business people and socialites, I treat them all equally. I have equal respect for everyone. ‘I believe in keeping the feet on the ground and not get carried away with success. That is why people who are associated with me, show respect towards me. I do not misuse my friendship and associations.’

8:00 – 8:30 This is my breakfast time. I mostly have egg-whites and fruits (which include – Melons, Papaya, Kiwi, Strawberry, Figs and others) for the first three days of a week and omelettes for the next. Occasionally, it could be Ravo (a Parsi delicacy made with Bombay Rava, milk, sugar and dry fruits inside). On Sundays, it’s always two Parathas and a cup of tea. From 8:30 – 9:00, I read the newspaper. I scan all the papers as I want to be updated with happening around. I also finish my mails.

‘Fitness is synonymous to discipline. Every step you take falls under fitness category. I take it as an opportunity to be fit.’ ‘Only 0.1% of population across all major cities in India goes to gyms. Only 10 – 15% of the sector is organized. It’s a hapless situation. Health awareness is emerging out very slowly. People are willing to spend money but not time and dedication. Lifestyles have become sedentary. At any party, get-together or an occasion; love is being shown through excess food. At weddings, there is an overdose of food being displayed and a similar situation at homes also. The calorie consumption has gone up lead ing to excess body weight, which in turn lead to health issues.’ 30 JANUARY, 2012

9:00 I go back to my training classes which will go on till 11:15. I teach while I learn! At 11:15, I take a break (though I have a lot of showers in between). I go home, get ready and come back to office. I have a cup of coffee again with some fiber biscuits. I cannot consume Oats or brown rice as I am intolerant to these.

Then the phone rings and I meet people and talk to them about how they had their fitness classes and take reviews. I call up other branches in the city and have a talk with them on how the classes are going.

LUNCHEON

5:15 - 6:15

At sharp 13:00, I have my lunch (a bowl of Dal and assorted vegetables). I mostly have vegetarian food for lunch. At times, I also have a bowl of salad. Post lunch, I relax and sit silently for a few minutes. After 14:00, I come back to my office.

I take another Aerobics class for an hour. A client’s attention span reduces, if an Aerobics session lasts for more than an hour. It is also according to the standard rules. As I take high intensity classes, I often relax. Music and dance are the ultimate distressing therapies, if I face any pressure. There are people of all age groups. I have to visit other centers as well and take classes there. By the time I come home, it will be 19:00. I answer all the questions, clear doubts (if any) about every Aerobic session. I keep my knowledge on fitness updated, by constantly involving in education programs. But these days, everything is available on Google. I also enroll for a lot of online programs.

5 THINGS PEOPLE DON’T KNOW ABOUT ME… I am a little fainthearted.

l

‘I was a Chartered Accountant by profession initially. But I had more respect for fitness industry to which I contributed so much. I am very passionate about this industry and there is nothing else equally important as this one is, for me. My family (husband in particular) supported me a lot. I have always been a self-motivated person. My husband once said he never met anyone who is as hard working as I am.’

l

I have high levels of Spirituality.

l

I am a homely person (something people may not believe this). I don’t like to go out much. I do not party much either, as I have to wake up early every morning for my fitness classes; for which I need to sleep early.

l

I love nature. I like to just sit and stare at nature and be in a state of complete blankness and with no thoughts in my mind.

l

I believe in making myself happy first which naturally shows a positive impact on others. What’s inside reflects on what’s outside! JANUARY, 2012 31

LOVE TOWARDS YOUR PETS

Most people are not aware of the importance of pets in our lives, but they can be good for us as we get older. A natural part of our awareness of self-esteem is of course our mindset of being invaluable. Therefore, pets have the ability to allow seniors to fulfill those needs by way of empowering them to provide for someone else. Who? Well, naturally if they have pets they have the responsibility to look after them daily…

POODLES

TURTLES Turtles aren’t as complicated to care for, but many die in captivity because they aren’t treated with the same degree of care and attention their furbearing counterparts. If they are properly cared for, turtles can live for many decades, but this requires you pay close attention to their diets, living arrangements and treatment. As

far as water is concerned, avoid using tap water for your turtle tank, as chlorine and fluoride are present in tap water and can disturb the pH balance. Use natural spring water for your turtle’s drinking water and de-chlorinated water for the swimming area. You can remove the chlorine from water by letting it sit for 24 hours before putting it in the tank. Some people argue that using chlorinated water helps prevent deadly bacteria from forming, but we’ll let you decide. 32 JANUARY, 2012

The Poodle is a lively and sensible dog that can be somewhat excitable (more so for the toy and miniature varieties, less so for the standard poodle). They are extremely responsive to obedience training and will be able to learn almost anything. Standard poodles are playful, enjoy being with children, are generally quiet and make excellent family dogs. They have very curly coats and come in a variety of solid colors

Remember to wash your hands after handling your turtles, in order to avoid contamination. Not all turtles are carry salmonella, but it is safer to maintain good hygiene when dealing with pets and their habitats. This goes for the turtle too, as you should keep its tank or pen clean and keep its water fresh and free of waste.

such as grey, white, black, cream, red, apricot, chocolate, blue or silver. Because of the curly coat and the fact that they are groomed frequently, poodles are good for people who have allergies to dogs. The general consensus is that the breed originated in Germany with an outside possibility of Russia. The Poodle is known as Puddlen or Pudel in German, which means a dog that likes to splash water. In France, it is known as the Caniche or Duck Dog. The Poodle’s ancestors are all good swimmers. Poodles come in a variety of sizes but are all considered the Poodles love to be with people and make wonderfully intelligent pets. There is a good reason they are often used as circus dogs – they are smart and love to learn tricks. Poodles make wonderful pets for allergy sufferers, as they don’t shed their hair. The Poodle requires a very strict grooming schedule. In addition, the small toy variety can be fragile and very young children could inadvertently harm the dog.

MOVIES REVIEWS

Don 2 takes place approximately five years after the first one with the ruthless Don (Khan) still at large and on every wanted list across the globe. Inexplicably, he surrenders himself to Interpol officers Roma (Priyanka Chopra), Malik (Om Puri) and the authorities in Kuala Lumpur in the hope of gaining immunity from criminal prosecution in exchange for information on all his contacts and illegal activity. Once inside prison, he befriends his archenemy Vardhaan (Boman Irani) and escapes with him to carry out a cunning plan that will bring Europe to it’s knees and obviously earn him wades of cash in the process. Technically, the film is awesome with a special mention to Jason West for his outstanding cinematography. All the characters are strong and believable and the best part is none of the protagonists or antagonists are entirely black or white. They’re all grey, which make them relatable on some level. What’s more the film ties in well with the first part (and I’d definitely recommend you watch it first as there are quite a few references to it), making it a proper sequel. And it’s one of those rare sequels that’s better than its predecessor in almost every respect.

‘One of a kind, I would say! Intense story with an interesting plot! This fourth installment of Mission Impossible series, kicks off with Trevor Hanaway - code-named - Cobalt (enacted by Josh Holloway), being executed by Sabine Moreau (played by Lea Seydoux) a French assassin on hire, over a task in Budapest. Jane Carter (performed by Paula Patton), Hanaway’s team leader and a newly appointed field agent Benji Dunn (played by Simon Pegg) manage to rescue IMF secret agent - Ethan Hunt (enacted by Tom Cruise) out of Moscow prison. In the midst of accomplishment, the bomb destructs Kremlin, resulting in Siridov, a Russian agent accusing Hunt and his team, plotting this strike. The Russians now consider this attack as an act of war, which forces the US authorities to initiate Ghost Protocol (a covert operation event, designed to disavow IMF), for which Hunt and his team are forced to blame themselves; but are allowed to break from the government and bring back Cobalt. Before IMF secretary dictates the entire mission ahead to Hunt and Brandt, Siridov and his forces kill him in his car. Hunt and his team now identifies that Cobalt was Kurt Hendricks (enacted by Michael Nyqvist - a Russian nuclear and the movie’s prime resister) who believes that the weak should die, paving the way for strong to live. Hendricks bombs Kremlin, acquires Russian nuclear launch control device and now is in quest of codes from Budapest courier, in order to launch a missile in USA. Hendricks anticipates Hunt’s strategy and takes the servers offline before sending a signal from a television tower, to a Russian nuclear submarine at Pacific which is targeted to San Francisco. Hunt now works on to prove that the IMF is innocent during the Kremlin attack. Weeks later, Hunt and his team meet again at lakeside restaurant and accept their new missions. While the action at Burj Khalifa deserves appreciation, I was lost admiring the plotline and direction.’ - By Aditya Tej

Dance with Dragons is set in a fictitious world reminiscent of Medieval Europe (primarily on a continent called Westeros). A Dance with Dragons picks up where A Storm of Swords left off and runs simultaneously with events in A Feast for Crows. The War of the Five Kings seems to be winding down. In the North, King Stannis Baratheon has installed himself at the Wall and vowed to win the support of the north-men to continue his struggle to claim the Iron Throne, although this is complicated by the fact that much of the west coast is under occupation by the iron born. Tyrion Lannister has been taken by ship across the Narrow Sea to Pentos, but his eventual goals are unknown even to him. In the far east, Daenerys Targaryen has conquered the city of Meereen, but has decided to stay and rule the city, honing her skills of leadership which will be needed when she travels on to Westeros. But Daenerys’ presence is now known to many in Westeros and from the Iron Islands and Dorne, from Oldtown and the Free Cities, emissaries are on their way to find her and use her cause for their own ends. The relationship that develops between the ages-old vampires and the spellbound witch threatens to unravel the fragile peace that has long existed between creatures and humans – and will certainly transform Diana’s world as well. The Discovery of Witches is the first book in the All Souls Trilogy.

I

t begins with absence and desire, blood and fear. When historian Diana Bishop opens a bewitched alchemical manuscript in Oxford’s Bodleian Library, it represents an unwelcome intrusion of magic into her carefully ordinary life. Though descended from a long line of witches, she is determined to remain untouched by her family’s legacy. She banishes the manuscript to hold the world of magic at bay any longer. For witches are not the only otherworldly creatures living alongside human. There are also creative, destructive daemons and longlived vampires who become interested in the witch’s discovery. They believe that the manuscript contains important clues about the past and the future and want to know how Diana Bishop has been able to get her hands on the elusive volume.

COVER STORY

SOWING THE SEEDS FOR SUCCESS Kritika Kamra has won millions hearts with her innocent and sweet look. In short span of time, she has become a household name for her tremendous acting skills. Her debut show was ‘Yahan Ke Hum Sikandar.’ Kritika earned fame in the television industry as Arohi of Kitni Mohabbat Hai. She is currently playing the lead role in Kuch Toh Log Kahenge. She speaks to Tulip about her journey as an actress... How was your first day at shoot? Were you performing under pressure Kritika Kamra as a child –

I was a little naughty. I used to bully guys around. I used to make guys wear girl clothes and they would start crying. I always wanted to sit on the front seat on my tricycle and made boys sit behind. When I was almost 5, I wanted to have everything my Mom had; from sunglasses and lipsticks, to her clothes and she used to buy identical miniature dresses for me. You were doing fashion designing from NIFT in Delhi. When have you decided to share the small screen – My first show happened by chance. It was then; I realized that I was meant to be an actress. It was a combination of luck and destiny; I had my first show after which I realized that this is what I want to do in life. In fact, it’s not only acting; but the whole process of movie-making had intrigued me as I used to be in front of the monitor as well, often. How did your parents react to your decision – They were always happy over I making my own decisions. I initially had plans to pursue Medicine as my career. But I switched to arts and then many other fields, before I ended up being an actress. Today, my parents are happy and they are my biggest fans. They never used to watch TV much before, but now they watch my serials over and over. Shifting to Mumbai is never easy. How did you manage? Were you not nervous It wasn’t tough as I already lived in Delhi alone before living in Mumbai. If someone can survive in Delhi alone, they can live anywhere. Mumbai is a fast city and I had to make my place in the city. There was no struggle as such as I liked the chaos and madness here. I love the fact that it’s alive all the time as it keeps me on my toes constantly.

38 JANUARY, 2012

I was obviously nervous as I had never been in front of the camera before. I couldn’t stop blinking my eyes. The director asked me to relax. Fortunately, I worked with people who never believed in acting. They told me that I was raw and it’s my greatest strength. They asked me to be myself and so I never had to dramatize in front of the camera or do nothing that was not natural. How did you feel when you saw yourself on the screen for the first time – I don’t like watching myself on screen much. I have never liked anything that I have done. I feel a bit strange hearing my own voice at times. Whenever I watch myself on screen, I always feel like I can do better. It’s good because it helps me improve, but deep inside; I do not enjoy my work much. In fact, when people praise me for my work, it’s hard for me to believe and it takes time for the appreciation to sink in. I expect too much from myself, at times. TRPs of your first show weren’t too impressive. Were you disappointed I never cared much about my ratings. The numbers are for the producers and the channels. I thank for my credits as an actress. Every show for me has been a stepping stone. As long as I am moving upwards, I am alright with what the numbers have to say. It’s good that my first show had not many TRPs, as without that sort of beginning, I guess I wouldn’t have done so many leads. Kitni Mohabbat Hai was a great show and everyone loved the roles of you and Karan. How did you feel after becoming a house hold name – I was glad that we were popular with the youth as people could connect and relate with us. We had our own audience which consisted of

fans online as well as abroad. Kitni Mohabbat Hai was a gen-next show and it felt great to be a part of a show where we were playing our age and connecting those with similar mindsets and intentions. Kitni Mohabbat Hai II wasn’t much successful. Were you upset -

It was a big success for me. The fact that the show was able to come back in its second season itself was a success. The show might not have generated new audience, but people who were watching it before had surely tuned in for its second season. It was a great show as we got to play something new and had the opportunity to experiment. You and Karan had participated in dance reality show. How was the experience Looking back, I can say that I have learned a lot from Zara Nach Ke Dikha. I used to be a little stage feared. But with this show, I was able to overcome that fear. Since I had not planned to become as actress and acting happened by chance, my first exposure had just been in front of a camera. Stage was an unexplored area for me and performing in front of audience in one take, was a challenge. But I learned so much! It gave me a lot of confidence and I made some great friends through the show. There are reports about your break-up with Karan. Do you feel another show with Karan will get you both back together They were mere link-ups even before we were together. The reports are untrue. I would like to make one thing clear – we were never together due to a show and it doesn’t take a show to bring two people together. It’s not because of reel romance that makes two people want to be in a relationship. What really matters is the amount of time spent together. Your recent show, Kuch To Log Kahenge is making news. What was your reaction after hearing the script I found it exciting! When they told me that the show is based on Dhoop Kinara, I googled the show and started watching it. The fact that I was hooked on to the show, though it was made way before I was born; speaks a lot! It was an epic show! I am happy that I have an opportunity to be a part of the show. Is your current role similar to any of the roles you played before There is a part of me in all the characters I played before. As an actress, you give a character the face and body language and so a part of you, lives in each character. I have to relate to what I am playing because as an actress, I have to end up living the character I am playing. You have also worked with two biggest names in television industry – Rajan Shahi and Ekta Kapoor. How was it working with them I have been lucky enough to be working with two big producers and its been a great experience. Balaji for me is like a family because I did three shows with them. Rajan Shahi is one of the best people I have met. He’s such a humble man! What are your plans after Kuch To Log Kahenge There are no plans for now. I don’t plan, as I believe in taking life as it comes. Do you wish to enter into Bollywood I would love to, but let’s see what comes my way. Message to the readers of Tulip Thank you so much for watching my shows and I really hope that I would continue living up to viewers’ expectations. Clothes- Miraaya Styling - RA JANUARY, 2012 39

F

rom Jennifer Aniston to Madonna to Lady Gaga to our very own Sonam Kapoor, all tried it and the result was hot looking gorgeous bodies. Hot yoga is a synthesized form of Hatha yoga which was promoted by Bikram Choudhury, the celebrity yoga guru. Hot Yoga is practiced in high temperature room of 39°C with a humidity of 40%-60% in a span of 75 mins. It consists of a sequence of postures and breathing exercise. For all those who have tried everything of earth but still can’t seem to shed the pounds, Hot Yoga is definitely your answer. If your aren’t able to cope up with fast paced power yoga, aerobics and just can’t do your cardio - Hot yoga is slow inch loss process with more of stretching aasanas, where you burn 300 to 650 calories in one class and there have been results of 5 kgs weight loss in a month. The heated room with high temperature helps in deeper stretching and prevention of injury. It benefits your body by engaging your body in focused deep breathing using heat to sweat out and detoxify impurities; the direct result is removal of anxiety and toxins. Hot yoga also helps in warming the muscles which makes the body burn fat readily.

42 JANUARY, 2012

The exercises tone and sculpt the body, the heart and lungs receive a work out and the digestive system gets cleansed. There is deep purification throughout the body, including most of the internal organs. The lymphatic system is massaged and stimulated. The result is a more toned body with increased flexibility! It is a great way of toning your body and also gives you an additional benefit of glowing skin. This form of yoga claims to improve blood circulation and metabolism. The heat and humidity make it so that your lungs only work at 50%, pushing your lungs and heart to work harder, strengthening your organs. With this, the body uses the oxygen more efficiently and allows your internal organs to breathe. It is claimed that the organs are in a sense, purified. Hot yoga is an ultimate relaxation technique. The detoxification results in stress release, good hormonal balance and rejuvenation. A calmer mind and increased energy leads to more awareness and feelings of contentment and well being. This form of exercise has been designed to pump your body, mind and spirit and also enhance your self confidence.

yderabad, the City of Pearls; witnessed an amazing and charismatic experience when Yogi Ashwini, the living Guru himself was present there for three days. The aura of Yogiji, the guiding light of Dhyan Foundation was so pure and mesmerizing that the entire city was looking forward to spending most of their time with him. The sessions involved workshops on Sanatan Kirya, mantra chanting; how to perform a vedic havan and talks on The Science of the Spirit by Yogiji. The Ganapati Havan performed under the guidance of Yogi Ashwini was one of the most unforgettable experiences. The entire atmosphere was calm and peaceful, with divine energies all over. Sanatan Kriya Telugu CD was also launched. The media could not get enough and was thronging around him to get more information from the elusive Yogi. It was a life changing trip for most of us. Every word spoken by Yogi Ashwini is magical and has so much depth to it. His only purpose is to aid the positive forces in creation. His noble gestures and divine personality are so sacred that the energy that flows through him makes everything around him pious and pure. It is not every day that a true Yogi is born. Waistcoats restructure silhouettes with graphic inset yokes. Celio has also opted for a return to emblematic garments, faithful to its urban sportswear values. SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT

TULIP

CAMPUS BUZZ

By Chandni Parekh

With so much concern recently about being greener and environmental friendly, waste management has become a very important topic. People and companies are starting to realize that the things they use and the way they dispose them, can make a big impact on our world…

S

tudents of Hamstech Institute put up a fashion show for CII & JCB (APTDC) for solid waste management. A new concept, a new thought! When we think of reuse-reduce-recycle in our everyday life, then why not fashion? The motto of the students was best-outwaste. Five collections were presented - In Sync With Natural, Paparazzi Pop, Plastic Panache , Techno Twist and Lure of Avant Garde. Students worked hard and designed clothes made of trash, recycling old packaging, bottle caps, sponge, jute, cloth bag, X-rays old Banners, bus tickets and more proving waste can be made into striking fashion with the right touch.

Pragati Ebrahim a student - ‘It was great to work, get to showcase my garment in just four months of joining the course. I have made one of the show stopper dress which is made of mosquito net sponge old cloth bag, paper plates and wire.’ Rupa Reddy and Priya Putta added in – ‘We were very excited when we got the opportunity to make a garment, but when the garment was on ramp the thrill and rush was totally different our garments were made of cloth bags and tamarind seed and are very wearable as well.’ A group of 44 students and 24 were finalized at the end to show the beautiful collection. It was the students’ way of conveying the message to save the earth and make the world eco friendly to the society.

‘Archeological evidence said that humans had a way of managing their waste even before landfills and incinerators were developed.’

WASTE MANAGEMENT – IMPORTANCE AND CONTROL MEASURES It takes a lot of valuable energy and materials to create and manufacture products and the resulting industrial waste can be difficult to manage. Many cities and countries have put new laws into place to heavily tax companies which produce excess amounts of waste or create potentially harmful effects on the air and ecosystem. The extra taxes help to offset the environment damage by going toward environmental restoration, protection and spreading information to increase knowledge on these issues. People and companies need to educate themselves about the environment. Smog alerts in many cases result from not only harmful transportation emissions but also from the output of factories into the air we breathe. Companies need to be responsible with their industrial waste management and specifically their hazardous waste. Many local governments provide counseling, consulting and recommendations to organizations on what they can do to better manage their waste and plan for a more environmental friendly production processes. More than ever, there need to be consequences to companies that do not take waste management seriously. Part of this includes reducing harmful emissions into the environment over a period of time and correctly disposing of waste materials. The good news now is that a good number of the population is increasingly becoming aware of the importance of waste management and is getting involved. JANUARY, 2012 53

This is the period when the winter recedes, paving the way for the summer. It is the time the farmers bring home their harvest. of beautiful kites all over the skyline. TULIP

In North India, a ritual bath in the river is important on this day. Khichiri is eaten and given away as charity and people also distribute rice and lentils to the poor and needy. Have a special session of Meditation, wherein you bring about the awareness of the self-effulgent subjective divinity. Affirm the greatest importance of your spiritual goal very clearly and pray to God to bless you with the capacity to constantly revel in your true self.

dawn people light a bonfire with logs of wood, other solid-fuels and wooden furniture at home which are no longer useful. The disposal of derelict things is where all old habits, the vices and materials things are sacrificed in the fire of the knowledge - Rudra. It represents realization, transformation and purification of the soul by imbibing and inculcating divine virtues. It is a time for families to congregate. Brothers pay special tribute to their married sisters by giving gifts as affirmation of their filial love. Landlords give gifts of food, clothes and money to their workforce. Sankranti in this sense demonstrates their strong cultural values as well as a time for change and transformation. And finally, gurus seek out their devotees to bestow blessings upon them. The animal kingdom is remembered and in particular, the cows. Travel is considered to be inappropriate, as these days are dedicated for re-union of the families. Sankranti in this sense demonstrates their strong cultural values as well as a time for change and transformation.

FUN WHILE FLYING KITES Indian festivals are all about health and prosperity and flying kites is not an exception. There are many religious beliefs and psychological reasons behind the idea of flying kites. Keeping eyes up boosts confidence! It is a natural remedy of nervousness and depression. It mo-

Since the festival is celebrated in mid winter, food prepared for this festival is such that it keeps the body warm and gives high energy. Prepare sweets of Til and Gur and offer them to your friends and relatives. See to it that your well-being prayer for all gets manifested in action and deeds. Have the lunch of Khichiri. This stands for inculcating simplicity in your life and habits. Sacrifice on this day to someone who truly deserves.

TRADITIONS AND RITUALS The festival identifies a period of enlightenment, peace, prosperity and happiness. Millions of people take a dip in places like Ganga Sagar (the point where the river Ganges meets the Bay of Bengal) and Prayag and pray to the Sun God. The six months of northern movement of the sun is followed by six months of southern movement. It is celebrated differently in different regions of India. The day preceding Sankranti is called Bhogi and this is when people discard old and derelict things and concentrate on new things causing change or transformation. At tivates people to think high. The custom is tied up with the fact that during winter, we all suffer with rough skin and many other common ailments like cold and sinusitis, which are mainly due to the cold climate. So when, on January 14 the sun enters into northern hemisphere; it terminates the cold winter bringing along warmer spring days. Coming in contact with direct sun naturally cures some of these ailments, as sunlight has great healing power and tremendous health benefits. The ambiance radiated with the laughter and happiness of children and adults alike, as parents relived memories of their childhood experiences of flying kites with their children. One of the best aspects of this festival is that the whole family comes together to take part in flying kites – from the elderly to the young. It’s a great opportunity to pass down values and exchange ideas across generations. JANUARY, 2012 55

HEAD OVER HEALS IN LOVE

KINSHIP

By Aditya Tej

Big guns of Hyderabad - Kishan and Sarita Lohiya, on a candid conversation with Tulip, mention the beautiful relationship they share with each other and how life in Hyderabad has paved the way to success in Business... KISHAN I consider myself lucky to be born and brought-up in this beautiful city. of Hyderabad. Having been in a joint family all through, I learned a lot and it’s been a wonderful experience. I was educated here as well! I have been handling business since the age of 16. As a kid, I was a hardcore fan of latest automobiles (from bicycles to my self-designed SUV). I still am for many reasons than one! I am the proud owner of first 2011 model of Hayabusa superbike in India. Within the whole joint family, I am the most pampered. ‘I am passionate about shooting. I am a registered shooter with Rifle Association of Andhra Pradesh. I got my own personal shooting range at home. I am the first civilian to have a personal shooting range in South India’ – Kishan.

from various countries across the globe (tires from California, air snorkel from Australia, winch from Thailand, etc). SARITA

My family got shifted to Hyderabad, soon after my Dad finished his education on Jaipur. He felt Hyderabad was the safest place to commence business, as there was a lot of competition in other cities. I being eldest daughter was more responsible. I got married to Kishan in 2001 and it was an arranged marriage. My in-laws treated me more like their daughter. It’s a pleasure to be a part of this beautiful joint family. MEMORIES OF FIRST DATE

I always had great support from my elder brothers and parents – in both professional and personal lives. Being the youngest at home, I was trained well under my elder brothers; in our business. There is an amazing rapport and understanding among all the three brothers. I love and respect them a lot! My Dad was born in Rajasthan, where he pursued his engineering as well. After getting married, my parents got shifted to Hyderabad (all this around 45 years back). As we already had many relatives residing in here during those days, we planned to start our business in Hyderabad. So, it was the comfort level which paved the way! I learned from my Dad, never to compromise for anything in life because that’s the way to be the best! He advises me to be the best in whatever I do and the importance of time management. In spite of having done Engineering and opting for a new job, he bravely stuck to oil business. All the family members are passionate about travelling. We go through hectic factory schedules; therefore we consider this as a very important factor. I believe in attaining perfection in every aspect of life. I, along with my two elder brothers and Dad; make a good team in our manufacturing business – while sharing the work department wise and being flexible

We were not alone (laughs). We were accompanied by our families too! Kishan and I started conversing about our academics, to begin with and then skipped to talking about the qualities of an ideal life partner. I was happy that all the opinions we exchanged have matched. Soon after a gap of year, we got married. But that duration of one year was filled with loads of fun and good memories – we used to meet during

every weekend, eat out and watch movies and enjoying long drives. Kishan is crazy about driving! He once drove all the way till Goa. We also went to Mahabaleshwar in a car. Kishan (who represents a joint family) supported me well in all the aspect of live though I was from an individual family. Dad always got everything I wanted. I had loads of friends during my schooling and college days and I was fortunate enough to have met many good friends. ‘Friends mattered a lot for Kishan and I. My sister is more like a friend to me and I share a lovely relation with her. It is always good to have a sister’ – Sarita. KISHAN

when it comes to executing decisions. My Mom is a simple living and a religious lady. We have been following values we imbibed from her. Every festival is celebrated religiously - our home looks so vibrant during the festive seasons. She is also into a lot of charity work (helping the poor and the needy with study materials and other facilities). I am an active member of Round Table India, which aims for educating the needy; in India. My life revolves around music. This passion helped me learn DJing as well. I got my own DJ console at home. ‘Gold Drop oil business set-up is a joint effort of my Dad, my two elder brothers and I. Dad has been flexible about business and always appreciated our ideas and opinions on business’ – Kishan. My 4-wheeler - Predator, which was totally designed by I, is the only Indian car to be there on world’s biggest 4x4 space portal, which fetched me huge international media coverage from USA and other Asian countries. With a high-sound music system, Predator is a 2-seater pickup truck concept car. Accessories for the same have been obtained

I was very expressive verbally and Sarita on the other hand, was equally supportive and this helped build our relation. They say that the first year of every marriage is the toughest phase – we almost took a year to get settled with things around. For us now, family is on the front seat more than work. We are blessed with two beautiful daughters (Ayushi and Kriti). ‘I am a proud receiver of Best Presentation Food award from Master Chef Hyderabad and Best Costume Designer from Round Table India. I design my own clothes’ – Sarita. JANUARY, 2012 61

AUTOMOBILES

RAGING WHEELS

MERCEDES BENZ C250 CDI A sharpened interior and more power help the new C-Class stave off the luxury soft-roader trend…

P

artial electric seats (you still have to slide them back and forth), alloy wheels, cruise control, dual-zone climate-control air conditioning, Bluetooth connectivity and rain-sensing wipers are all there. The seats are only vinyl (albeit mimicking leather) on the C200 CDI. If you want cow-made leather you need to step up to the C250, which brings other goodies and more power to justify the hike. Additions include trim and colour changes, additional interior lighting, a rear arm rest, 18-inch alloy wheels and a larger colour screen with the comand system that includes a 10GB hard drive for downloading music. It also incorporates internet connectivity (using your smartphone) and there is a smarter satellite-navigation system that can recommend a route that will use less fuel. Safety is covered by nine airbags, a tyre pressure-monitoring system and pre-safe, which prepares seatbelts and other safety functions if a crash is imminent. There is also a display to show how many of the rear belts are in use. Arguably the least impressive part of the previous C-Class was its somewhat dour interior. But black plastics have given way to a more stylish dash design inspired by the larger E-Class. The display screen sits high on the dash, flanked by nicely tailored materials and stylish finishes, while the collection of buttons and dials is logically laid out. The only complaint is the location of the main controller for the comand system, which sits behind the gear selector. There is plenty of storage, while the rear seats are relatively spacious considering the style of car. The boot too, is usefully wide and spacious. Some of its rivals have tilted towards sharper dynamics rather than comfort with their compact sedans but Mercedes has ensured there is plenty in the way of compliance from the well-sorted suspension on the C-Class. It does a beautiful job of soaking up imperfections and recovering quickly from bumps without detracting from the competent cornering manners. It makes for a relaxed tourer that doesn’t shy away from corners, with good steering feel and reassuring brakes. 2.1 litres may not sound much for an engine but the turbocharger of this modern unit makes for oodles of grunt. And while it’s the same basic engine used in the C200 CDI, a bigger turbo means there is a full 50 per cent more power and torque, so the engine lacks nothing when it comes to good, usable mid-range punch, with a hearty 500Nm on tap from just 1600rpm. Squeeze the throttle gently and there is instant urge, although if you push too hard and provoke a downchange for the seven-speed auto it’s less than elegant, with an unwanted surge. The 150kW power peak is rarely needed because you can just rely on the effortless mid-range. The stop-start system (it can be disabled with the Eco button) shuts down the engine and quickly restarts it when you take off. Impressively and unlike some other systems, there is also no dip in the headlights or surge from the air conditioning when the car is starting or stopping. Even better is that the additional grunt brings with it fuel savings, with a claimed figure of 5.1 litres per 100 kilometres. The 325d engine of the BMW 3 series coupe in comparison is less fuel efficient and is also down on power quotient. Needless to say, it is not so eco conscious as well. It is real hard to out maneuver BMW in the power and fuel efficiency ratio but Mercedes has just managed to do it with this coupe.

SPECIFICATIONS 2143 cc, 4 cyl, RWD, 201 bhp, 369 lb ft, 1615 kg and 131 g/km co2. Performance – 0-61 mph in 7.1 seconds. Maximum speed – 149 miles / hour and 58.9 mpg. 64 JANUARY, 2012

ASTON MARTIN DB9

T

he Aston Martin DB9 is available as either Coupe or Volante (convertible) with rear mid-mounted, six-speed manual gearbox as standard or optional touchtronic 2 sixspeed automatic transmission. The introduction of the DB9 marked the beginning of Aston Martin’s 21st Century renaissance. In this latest package of improvements for Aston Martin DB9, hardware changes focus on the chassis, featuring a standard Adaptive Damping System (ADS) which offers a system constantly evaluating the optimum damper condition, similar to that seen on the DBS and Rapide models. Controlled by a button on the centre console, the two-stage adaptive dampers can be switched between their default mode, which is optimized for ride comfort and a firmer sport mode, delivering tighter body control and a more responsive feel. Such is the success of the DB9’s new damping system that the DB9 sport pack upgrade has now been discontinued. However a sport design alloy wheel is available as an option. Performance comes courtesy of Aston Martin’s celebrated 6.0-litre V12 engine, which develops an unchanged 470bhp and 442lb ft of torque. Mated to a choice of six-speed touchtronic paddle-shift automatic or six-speed H-pattern manual transmissions, the Aston Martin DB9 offers an intoxicating blend of effortless pace and sporting character. A top speed of 190mph and the ability to hit 60mph in just 4.6sec seal its credentials as the definitive 2+2 grand tourer. At the front, a new bumper is the main change, with a re-shaped lower intake featuring hexagonal mesh to compliment the new bright finish radiator grille. New headlamp bezels complete the fresh nose treatment. The DB9 remains one of the world’s most beautiful sports cars and is instantly recognizable as an Aston Martin; the changes introduced here modernize the DB9 to keep it at the forefront of automotive design. Other changes include silver brake calipers, 20-spoke diamond turned alloy wheels as standard, together with new design option wheels and a bright finish grille. Clear rear light lenses are also standard. Inside double apex alloy finish, is now added to the list of options, along with the exceptional BeoSound audio system from Bang & Olufsen. This new package of improvements compliments these core qualities perfectly. Subtle styling changes freshen the Aston Martin DB9’s appearance, with a new front bumper, bright finish radiator grille and a re-shaped lower intake featuring bright hexagonal mesh. New headlight bezels, re-styled sills, silver brake calipers, 20-spoke diamond turned alloy wheels and clear rear light lenses complete the external revisions. The DB9 is the quintessential sporting grand tourer and offers an unrivalled combination of driver involvement, character, luxury and refinement. This car combines our unique Aston Martin character with an uncompromised design philosophy, craftsmanship and trademark Aston Martin performance ability. This is the first car built at Gaydon adopting the VH architecture. It has evolved every year since, with significant changes including a power upgrade and successive reductions in CO2 emissions. The latest package of improvements goes further than ever, highlighting the Aston Martin DB9’s qualities as a true sporting GT and underlining its role as the backbone car. JANUARY, 2012 65

DUCATI STREETFIGHTER 848

T

he new Streetfighter 848 offers pure motorcycling thrills, thanks to its perfect combination of 848 Testastretta 11° engine and a new Trellis frame with superbike 848EVO-derived geometry. Outstanding control and precision make the Streetfighter 848 irresistible. Thanks to the superb handling offered by the new frame, the progressive easy-to-manage power delivery provided by the Testastretta 11° engine, the confidenceinspiring upright riding position and Ducati Traction Control; which keep watch over the power. This latest interpretation of the fighter concept delivers instant, knock-out riding enjoyment. The cornerstone of this new Streetfighter is of course the 849.4cc L-Twin Testastretta 11 powerplant. Sharing the same basic configuration with the 848 EVO Superbike, the 11 degrees of valve overlap is designed to give a smoother engine character which is more suited to the street duty the Streetfighter 848 will most often be used for. The most notable difference between the Superbike and Streetfighter’s engine is the camshaft profiles tuned to deliver a more street-friendly punch. The bore, stroke and compression ratio are identical, with a service interval of 15,000 miles. A new superbike-derived frame is similar to the 1098 Steetfighter, but has less rake and trail for more stable and confidence inspiring steering traits. The wheelbase is the same as the 1098 at 58.07 inches, but longer than the 848 EVO’s 56.3-inch wheelbase. Attached to the rear of the trellis frame is a new one piece cast aluminum swingarm sprung by a fully adjustable Sachs shock set up for a comfortable ride. Up front 43mm Marzocchi forks with full adjustability and handles the imperfect road surfaces that the Streetfighter 848 is expected to. Both the front and rear are set up softer in spring rate and damping than its 1098 sibling. The Streetfighter 848 comes standard with the Ducati Traction Control system, offering eight levels of adjustment. A full Brembo brake system sans ABS slows the whole kit down with 320mm discs squeezed by radial mounted 4-piston calipers with soft-feel pads in the front. Braking duties in the rear are handled by a single 245mm disc and a 2-piston caliper. You may find it a bit interesting that the bike that is aimed at being more usable on the roads doesn’t have ABS as standard equipment. Tire twisting grunt coming out of the corner is what makes twins a blast of ride and this bike is no different. Throttle response is instantaneous, yet no abrupt which is perfectly suited to the tight hairpins that we encountered above Modena. The boost is just enough to be fun without getting out of hand. It really is easy to control the power, but just in case the DTC can be dialed in to help out the ham-fisted. As expected, the Brembo brakes perform with poise. The soft-feel sintered pads on the front do not have as much initial bite as accustomed to, but the power and feel is stellar. Even as the laps counted down on the track, there will be zero fade which is surprising on such a tight layout. On the street, cornering on the Streetfighter 848 was a blast. Effort on the taller bars is light and flicking into a corner at the appropriate speed is cake. Mid-corner changes were as easy as thinking about it and even an unexpected decreasing radius turn was not a problem.

SPECIFICATIONS Engine – liquid-cooled 849.4 cc L-twin, 8 val.DOHC. Compression ratio – 13.2:1. Torque – 69 lb-ft @ 9500 rpm. Transmission – 6-speed and chain final drive. Horsepower – 132 bhp @ 10, 00 rpm. Bore x stroke – 94 x 61.2 mm. Wheelbase – 58.1 in. Rake – 24.5 deg. Seat height – 33.3 in. Fuel capacity – 4.4 gal. Length – 83.5 in. 66 JANUARY, 2012

AIRFLO CONTROLLER

You know how it is when the in-game situation gets tough as nails and your palms start to sweat a whole lot? Well, just like how there is this seat cooling pad available for office chairs as well as car seats, so are do gaming controllers. All you need to do is plug in this sleek and ergonomic device, where both the buttons as well as the fans will star to glow in an icy blue colour. You can adjust the fan speeds in two different configurations, where the patented Air Flo technology will help keep your clammy palms nice and cool as you start dispatching off your opponents with skill and expertise. The Air Flo Controller is capable of retaining all the essentials with the PS3 controller, including the dual rumble function, responsive buttons and reverse analog sticks. You won’t be able to go wireless with this though, as the Air Flo ergonomic controller has a 3 meter cord to keep it connected. It has dual rumble motors, LED lights for coolness, soft rubber grips and the built in 2-speed fan for cooling your hands. While you might think the 2-speed fan is a gimmick, it’s essential for marathon game sessions. This is officially licensed ergonomic controller with attached 10ft/3m cord for extended reach. It has illuminated action buttons and air vents and dual rumble motors for an enhanced gaming experience. The wireless controllers are only used for second players now. In essence, the Airflo can be considered someone Green because you save money and resources by not using external batteries.

RAZER SWITCHBLADE This concept is a breakthrough portable gaming device design that allows gamers to play on the go without giving up the precision and control ordinarily possible on a desktop gaming system. Little is known about the device itself, but Razer has imagined it using a pair of 7-inch multi-touch displays as well as a layer of tactile, dynamic keys on the lower screen. The diminutive Switchblade looks like a great solution for PC gamers who want to get their fix on the go. With a multi-touch display, a tactile adaptive keyboard that intelligently configures itself to whatever game you boot up and Wi-Fi/3G support, this Intel Atom-powered device was the most promising gaming prototype of the show. When you start up any game, the keyboard intelligently recognizes the game’s specific interface and transposes the interactive visual elements such as command icons and control schemes right to the mechanical keys. Depending on the situation ingame, the keyboard can also change on-the-fly to give you only the controls you need. There is no telling if this product will ever to make it to market, but given the buzz it generated on the show floor Razer would be wise to find a way to get this into our hands. The keyboard on the bottom is a full-on LCD, but covered with physical keys. In contrast, the W105 had a flat touch panel on the bottom. Much like the Optimus Maximus of yesteryear, this keyboard would enable gamers to place different screens underneath depending on title and even within a game, you could imagine the keys shifting to account for different POVs, levels, scenarios, etc. 68 JANUARY, 2012

JVC ALIENWARE M17x With a gorgeous light-emitting chassis, full HD display, high-end graphics card support and the ability to plug in an Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3 via the HDMI-in port, this notebook is a Swiss army knife for gamers. Alienware also plans to integrate a wireless HD feature in the near future that allows you to stream the action from your notebook directly to an HDTV. The latest M17x doesn’t just improve on its predecessor; it has all the makings of a dream laptop. Featuring an Intel quadcore Sandy Bridge CPU, AMD switchable graphics and a Samsung SSD, this monster offers more than double the performance of anything that came before. On top of that, the M17x has a built-in WirelessHD transmitter, so if it’s 17-inch 1080p display isn’t big enough, you can beam Blu-ray movies, games and anything else you want wirelessly across the room to a big-screen TV. One of the coolest things about Alienware systems is the backlighting. You can change the keyboard, the logos, the front grille - even the ring around the touchpad - to a number of different colors, depending on your mood or what you’re doing. The AlienFX utility to change the controls is fun to use; you can easily spend a lot of time tinkering with the color schemes. While the previous M17x had a honeycomb pattern on its touchpad, the newest iteration is smooth, but is a spacious 3.9 x 2.2 inches. The surface offered little to no resistance as our fingers glided across it, which is a good thing. Powered by Synaptics, the touchpad is also capable of multitouch gestures, though Alienware turns them off by default. JANUARY, 2012 69
