The preparation of the ice cream is a delight to watch. Donna Brown, Interior Design Faculty Working in the field of design is a blessing in my life and I fully recommend any individual who analyses design and thinks creatively to seriously consider a career on this wonderful path. Design is everywhere, whether its good or bad design-this is a matter of taste or opinion, which develops with confidence and time. At RMI Hyderabad, we teach you the building blocks and the knowledge to develop your confidence as a designer. Our campus in RMI HYD is an inspiring place to study design and I have no doubt that after studying with us, students will be fully employable with skills and talent that stand out from the rest. I believe that, if a student’s dream is to become a jewelry designer, then studying the two years advanced diploma in jewelry design at Raffles Millennium International Hyderabad is the best way to gain the necessary skills and knowledge required for this specialized field. The jewelry design course at RMI HYD offers a great balance: teaching design with a fashion edge, together with great technical skills training. The process of designing and making is one of the endless fascination and evolution, to enjoy the way of creative process highlights- the wink of all things, which allows creating jewelry inspired by diverse influences but melted into a coherent whole. Diana Dos Santos Coelho, Jewelry Design Faculty

Pentxo Cervantes, Multimedia & Visual Communication Faculty I firmly believe that if anybody is interested in becoming a designer, RMI is the best place. Not only because of the international exposure of the faculty, but also because of the excellent installations that our campus has. RMI is probably the only design college perfectly prepared for the future in design and technology and is always open for creativity, that is the main ingredient for brilliant careers now-a-days. Our students are always encouraged to think with absolute freedom, because we believe that creativity has no boundaries.

Dianeshree Cunniah, Fashion Design Faculty Raffles has been an inspiration much before I even thought of joining as a fashion design faculty. Today, being part of the RMI family is one of the many dreams come true. You can only feel it when design is a lifestyle itself. Moreover the multicultural environment makes it another enjoyable walk through the diverse thought process of each and every student and staff. For me, everyday feels like seeing a thought in a panoramic dimension.

The word ‘design’ makes me feel crazy. There is a designer in each one of us and Raffles guides us to bring that designer into the limelight. Enter into Raffles as a ‘Learner’ and come out of it as a ‘Professional’ Sahini Reddy, Student

Design to me is, the power to create! Design is all about inspiration, modification and presentation. Whenever I put my designer glasses on, everything seems to inspire me! I aim to be a top fashion designer and I am sure Raffles will take me there! Shreena Popat, Student

Designing for me is anyone’s creative eye towards anything around us. The smallest of things could be an inspiration towards a great design. I desire to reach a stage where I am looked up to as a designer, but the direction is more important than the destination and I am sure Raffles is the best path chosen to reach there! TULIP

CAMPUS BUZZ

April 22nd every year marks an important day for the world. Its the “World Earth Day” yet another day to give something back to Mother Nature. I remember my school and college days where we used to celebrate this day for the whole week - by planting trees around the campuses, signing up petitions, cleaning up the surroundings and planning for a better future for our planet. The only message that we can spread around us is “Let’s save our Earth by planting trees every year because Earth is what we all have in common.” Tulika Bagaria, Student

CELEBRATING EARTH DAY! What is it? Earth Day is an annual event, celebrated on April 22, on which events are held worldwide to demonstrate support for environmental protection. It is not a public holiday and public life, with regard to transport schedules and opening hours for schools and businesses, is not affected. It was founded by Senator Gaylord Nelson, and was first organized in 1970 to promote ecology and respect for life on the planet as well as to encourage awareness of the growing problems of air, water and soil pollution. Why do we celebrate Earth Day? It’s because we seem to have forgotten what a beautiful gift we have been given in the form of planet Earth. We also seem to have forgotten that this is our home and we need to keep it safe and clean in order to stay healthy and alive. Why only 22 April? Because it did not fall during exams or spring breaks, did not conflict with religious holidays and was late enough in spring to have decent weather. Core Issues: • Climate Change • Conservation and Biodiversity • Education • Energy • Food and Agriculture • Green Economy 18 APRIL, 2014

• • •

Recycling and Waste Reduction Sustainable Development Water

Things you can do for this day: • Cleaning up local parks and shorelines. • Replacing incandescent light bulbs with energy-saving compact fluorescent ones. • Planting trees. • Conserving electricity. Earth Day 2014: Earth Day 2014 will focus on the unique environmental challenges of our time. As the world’s population migrates to cities, and as the bleak reality of climate change becomes increasingly clear, the need to create sustainable communities is more important than ever. Earth Day 2014 will seek to do just that through its global theme: Green Cities, with smart investments in sustainable technology, forward-thinking public policy, and an educated and active public, we can transform our cities and forge a sustainable future. Nothing is more powerful than the collective action of a billion people. Events on Earth Day: Earth Day programs are held in every state of India from small villages to large cities. Events are planned by multinational corporations and local NGOs. Students from primary school to those in PhD programs participate. People from different income brackets, races, genders and religious backgrounds all came out to show their support for the environment.

Mohit Jadeja, Student Our planet is truly a magnificent place; Earth Day raises an awareness to save Earth. We should celebrate Earth Day to remind us to conserve natural resources for future use. Earth day is very important as it teaches us to reduce reuse and recycle. It’s the day you show how much you appreciate earth by going green. I personally conserve a lot of energy not only on this day but also other days by switching off lights and fans when not needed. I also plant a tree not on regular basis but when I seem to go into my garden for a walk.

with

Megha Dinesh he is spontaneous, creative, strong headed and has the adaptability and flexibility to learn new things. She likes to see or experience things before believing in them. People who know her will agree on how easy it is to trust her. In this journey of life she is learning to be wiser in being selective and moving on without holding things or grudges for too long. A firm believer of “we attract everything in our life and whatever we resist always persist and what we accept is what we transform.”

S

Morning - Generally my morning starts around 6:30 am, it’s like I have an inbuilt clock, I go for my routine walks to KBR, I enjoy fresh air, watch people around relishing nature. Followed by my incentive: hot cuppa of chai at the bandi near MLA Colony on my way back. Having my own O Cafe, which revolves around healthy food with most of the ingredients organic or home grown, saves me the extra trouble. A shot of fresh wheat grass juice along with some other vegetable juice and mostly a masala omelet is part of my usual breakfast routine. After that I prefer an hour or so alone doing self healing or giving Reiki to my work place along with some reframing exercise to strengthen certain beliefs in me. This is like my time and generally don’t entertain conversations or other disturbances in it. Followed by a little chit chat with my team along with some tea, I seep into work mode. I am upfront and prefer honesty. Love my space. In case of any new set up I like hand holding in the beginning and soon after the stage I am able to let the person take his/her own space. I have learnt to ask for help and still learning not to prove being a super woman. And most importantly to accept that to receive is equally important like to give and to respect and value myself. If I have to give myself a metaphor, the best I could relate is “running stream of cold, soothing water”, fresh and full of life.

Work - My work is a story in itself! I gained financial independence since I was 18. Coming from a very modest and conservative family in Jaipur and being a rebel, in order to take my life my own way I decided to part with my family. Then it was all about survival. I am someone who has a mind with heart and I believe that its ok to have feelings and acknowledge them and use them constructively even in your work sphere. Though being a Law graduate my heart lies in wellness and healing industry. My first job in a formal set up happened to be in Oberoi and the first time I ever heard the word “spa” was during my interview! Though I was selected as a Spa receptionist, I have always been in admin role. I got strong motivation from my ex boss “Ms. Christina Watson” she always guided me to strive and achieve excellence and thus 20 APRIL, 2014

inspired me to learn the technicalities of the profession and eventually to train people and groom them in Spa expertise. My work has been primarily to set up spas from project to competition stage. With 14 years experience in this industry I have set up 15 spas across the country. The other essential aspect of my work is healing, learning other alternative sciences and assist people helping them address their issues in relationship, break ups, health issues like cancer and more. I also send distance healing to friends and people who ask for it. The beauty of these alternative approaches and sciences are they very soon become way of your life and is with you 24*7. Evenings - As an entrepreneur and owner of Meghavi, most of my day flows in meeting up HNI, exploring business opportunities, working on tie ups, brand visibility, tapping and being connected to the customers directly, all of which takes place post lunch. The other part of my work goes in improvising the consistency in the product and the efforts to continue for better. So I focus a loton, one-to-one training and emphasis on learning. I always tell my team it’s ok to make mistakes; we all make mistakes but what is more important is to learn from them. I also make a point that I am connected to all my customers on a one-to-one basis and go through every feedback of our customers and get back to them within 24 hours. Besides that being member of BNI and of the platinum chapter, FLO, KLC along with friends and social commitments keep me engaged. Family and Friends - I am single and family is back home in Jaipur. I have two brothers, one older and one younger who too reside in Jaipur along with parents. I grew up in a very conservative environment with lots of do’s and don’ts as a girl and yet a lot of encouragement towards studies. I easily make friends, but have very few close ones. With the various ups and downs, today my relationship with family is more warm. We are able to exchange ideas and opinions without imposing on each other. Whenever I am back home, there’s always something new we do together. My grandmother is a strong pillar and a source of energy and encouragement for me. I love spending quality time with my friends, going on holidays, adventure sports, scuba being my favorite, shopping, clubbing and dancing, some friends call me twinkle toes, as I love dancing. Also I am very particular that I am there around my friends whenever they really need me. Over the time both my family and friends have come to terms that I am not someone who will make a call on day-to-day basis. There could be days and months passed by since I would have last spoken or met them, nevertheless they know that they are always somewhere in my thoughts or prayers. Dinner - Being in a new city and living your own dream, new start up and creating something unique has its own excitement and so called challenges. The work keeps me on until 9:00 p.m. generally, post that I catch up with friends through calls/messages/fb. Dinner is usually light for me unless I am out and the city has been very welcoming so often I get pampered with Hyderbadi Mehmannawazi! I love my sleep and whenever possible I avoid late nights and keep clubbing and partying for Saturdays with my best friend Vidya. I am a diehard lover for chaat, I gorge on it every now and then with friends. Ending up the day is always with a feeling of being grateful and being a reiki channel and teacher, I sleep with Reiki. I mostly have a very sound and peaceful sleep. Weekends and Leisure - I love spending my time with kids, traveling, dressing up, clubbing. I am more of a social drinker and love my scotch too. Lazying around, listening to music, having a good chat with friends and pampering myself is what anyone would find me doing in my free time, not to forget shopping mostly for clothes and perfumes. One of my passion is to create a home for 50 children who are disowned or have gone through difficulties of acceptance. I am a great fan of scuba dive, a trip to wildlife in Kenya, a trip in Amazon forest and basically enjoy travelling to different countries. Needless to say I love receiving good massage; self pampering is something I relish.

How would you describe yourself as an individual? Chris: I grew up to be a reasonably independent person as my parents were working long hours and we lived in an isolated property in the foothills of the Rocky mountains in Canada. It also developed an innate interest in problem solving from a young age which led to the development of curiosity, thirst for knowledge and logical thinking. I don’t have a complex set of personal needs but the things that I like, I like to do well. I believe that I have very strong ethics and solid morals that guide me well through both my personal and work lives. All of that probably makes me sound like some kind of robot but I really enjoy spending time with my wife and our friends and family, and doing more of this is really what I go to work for. Josie: I am more of a vivacious, friendly, always smiling and make people smile kind of person. I enjoy leaving sparkle wherever I go

making everyone happy around me. Tel us how you happen to come to Hyderabad and how are you liking it here? Chris: Arriving in Hyderabad was a bit of an adventure, but that’s what makes life interesting. We had finished a venture in Malaysia and were temporarily back in Australia while confirming our next posting. Out of the blue I received a call from who was on the board of some major logistics company in India that was looking to start up a new division focused on supply chain management, which is my core area of expertise. I must admit, I had opportunities to visit India on potential business opportunities before but it was not a destination that was high on my list of places I wanted to develop new business in. If you had heard some of the stories that were told by fellow expats while based in Singapore about the illness and time in hospitals following trips to India you would be in the same mind. Anyway, I

trusted my friend and knew that he would not put me in some life threatening situation, so we did some research on India and it was very apparent that the growth potential and level of business activity was incredible. A few days later I spoke to my friend and the process was started that committed us to India for at least 3 years, sight unseen and fears all still intact. A few months later we arrived in India, me and the wife, a couple of suitcases, and absolutely no idea of what to expect. Let’s just say that I thought our time in India would not even last the first 24 hours, but this country draws you in and within a couple of weeks the shock had worn off and the vibrancy of the country had captured us. For our first year we were actually based in Bangalore, but after that the MD of the company wanted me to relocate my entire team to head office in Hyderabad. Our arrival in Hyderabad was not ideal by any means. We spent the first couple of months living out of suitcases in a hotel before we

How long have you been married and how has the journey been so far? Josie: We have been married for nine years and it has been fun, exciting and an amazing journey together. Chris: In nine years of our marriage (and many more to come) we never really fought, as we seem to be jointly learning and sharing

our new experiences together. It took a few months of discussion to get Josie on board with leaving Australia when we got married, but since then I think our mutual dependence upon each other has really brought us closer together. Every day is a new adventure for us and we are enjoying this journey together. Family Chris: My family is very different to Josie’s in that we were never really close as a group. I am in touch with my mother every few months through Skype but she continues to run a very busy social schedule and it’s never easy to track her down. Josie’s family is Italian and they all live in Adelaide, Australia. We love visiting them because when we are there it it’s happy, crazy Italian chaos. 13 people at the dinner table, shouting, screaming, laughing and just having fun together. We keep in touch with her family some way or other through phone, Skype, Whatsapp, facebook, etc, so we never miss them and are always in contact, and that makes me very happy. Best memory as couple till date Our wedding day was definitely the most special memory. It was a simple affair held in the courtyard of one of our favorite restaurants in Sydney, conducted by a brilliant marriage celebrant and a friend, a well know opera singer from the Sydney Opera House, accompanying in the background. The other would be our 5 years in Singapore. We both love to socialize and entertain and our time there really brought out the best in both of us and helped us understand how to work together and support each other. We were fortunate enough to live in new project that developed into a close community of expats from all corners of the world. Your experience in Hyderabad so far: Josie: It’s been an indescribable adventure. My experience has been an unbelievable journey here, good and bad at times - a full culture shock. It’s an experience I will never forget, ever. I am loving it now, but in the beginning it was difficult to adapt; the food very spicy, the traffic, the cows on the road, the dirty streets, and the lack (in our minds) of service. But now I am a local. I love Hyderabad, exploring small villages and streets, shopping, and bargaining which has become my specialty.

LIFESTYLE

After joining the expat group I love the ladies Thursday lunches, and every week we try new restaurants and meet new people. It’s a great way to make new friends and see new places. I love the sightseeing in Hyderabad, and my favorite place is Charminar for all the bling!

were in a position to take a place on rent that we could call home. I am sure that this is not the first time that you have come across this kind of story, but the predatory pricing for foreigners on property rental was a real issue for us. We ended up taking a place in Kompally, well out of the main expat areas but it was new and its layout suited us. We spent two years out there and enjoyed the “cleaner” air and quiet surrounds. It was a bit too isolated though and we found it difficult to engage at a social level being located so far away from the main areas of activity in Hyderabad. We found a new place in Banjara Hills that has been like a breath of fresh air for us and our time here in India. Josie is now very actively involved socially and we are now really enjoying all that Hyderabad has to offer.

Chris: I am a business guy. I get to see the roads between home and the office, the airport and the occasional restaurant. I get to experience Hyderabad through my wife.

Rapid Fire What do you call each other Josie: Monkey, because Chris is cheeky just like one. Chris: Monkey or Spunky Monkey. Josie is cheekier that I am. The Spunky bit is a bit of Australian slang. A spunk is someone who you think is really cute or sexy. What is the best gift you have received from your spouse Josie: Three strand pearl necklace by Chanel that Chris bought me when we were together in Milan . Chris: The best gift I receive from Josie is her smile that comes deep from within her heart when she is happy. What is one quality of your spouse you wish you had? Josie: His patience. Chris: Her social networking skills and ability to instantly connect with people. Where would you want to take your next holiday to? Josie: Spain Chris: Spain (Looks like we are going to Spain.) Where do you hangout most in Hyderabad? Josie and Chris: Home. I know it sounds boring but we really love our new home and enjoy chilling, relaxing, cooking and watching movies together. One thing that cheers up your spouse instantly Josie: Chris’ smile and his laugh. Chris: When Josie is upset or having a tough day the immediate remedy is to sit down and listen to her with very little talking from side. One passion you both share as a couple We love entertaining together and great food and wine. If you had to describe each other one word ? Josie: Amazing Chris: Happy and crazy. Can I get away with that?

T hrough His Lenses Saurabh Panjwani, one of the renowned photographers in the city, is a known kid’s photographer. His passion for photography started when his nephew Samrat was born. He used to capture those cute baby expressions and shared them on Facebook just for starters. Looking at the tremendous downpour of likes and comments of his work and the thought of clicking those tiny toddlers he started clicking for other kids too, it all started then and there was no looking back. He has his own calendar now with the name, “Tender years”, which is an elite kid’s calendar. “Kids photography needs a lot of patience as the kids are hyperactive and do not like to sit at one place. They have their own ideas churning in their minds and it is difficult to capture that one expression which alone takes hours together. Parents love this concept as they are delighted to see that smiley face of their toddler and want to share it with the world and treasure it the same time for the rest of their lives. Kid’s calendar is a way to channelize these thoughts and precious moments. Every year I launch this calendar in the month of December and it is a huge success. “I started clicking with a regular digital camera but when I was confident about my work I invested heavily on lens. Right now I am using Canon 6d 70-200mm kit. This year I shall be coming up with better ideas for kids and will try to cater a bigger number from Hyderabad,” he adds. The Story Behind............ FASHION

Brands are synonyms to luxury, some people are obsessed with names and some take them as piece of art. International labels around the world have been seeing customers for their products, be it Prada shoes, Burberry shades, the hip Michael Kors bags or luxury filled scents from Roberto Cavalli. But how much do you know about these brands, that you use? Well, we have got a sneak peek in how some of the top brands started and evolved over time. So when you own a piece from their brand you know much more about the product than just the name.

Roberto Cavalli

Launched in the early 1970s, the Roberto Cavalli Group is one of the most renowned and respected “Made in Italy” brands due to the creativity and stylistic innovation that has always distinguished its clothes, its shoes and bags. Roberto Cavalli didn’t grow up surrounded by fashion, but at home he found art, colours and a sense of creativity. He was born in Florence on November 15th 1940, into a family that was already using the tools of his soon-to-be trade: brushes and palettes. His grandfather was Giuseppe Rossi, a prominent exponent of the Macchiailo pictorial trend, which was established in Florence in the mid 19th Century and whose paintings were already displayed in the monumental rooms of Galleries in Florence. Once Roberto completed his studies at the Florence School of Art, he knew that his future would take him far beyond the opportunities provided by standard qualifications. The Roberto Cavalli group initiated in international markets with the first line “Roberto Cavalli”, followed by casual and young line- “Just Cavalli”, signature line -”Class Roberto Cavalli” and a younger collection for teens- “Roberto Cavalli Junior”. All of these collections, dedicated to both women and men, are complemented by a wide range of which includes: silk and cashmere accessories, eyewear, watches, perfumes, underwear and swimwear. In 2012, Roberto Cavalli has also launched the line “Roberto Cavalli Home” collection featuring the Cavalli world in the fields of furniture, textiles, artde-la-table, Murano glass, carpets, wallpaper and ceramics.

Burberry

In 1856, a trained dress-maker Thomas Burberry founded the brand at the age of 21. The first Burberry store opened on Winchester Street in Basingstoke. It in 1891, the company moved into its first London shop. Burberry developed its first product - a weatherproof coat called the ‘Tielocken’, the predecessor of the iconic trench coat in 1895. Since its founding in 1856, Burberry has been defined by its outerwear heritage and its iconic trench coat. When Thomas Burberry invented gabardine, the Burberry brand became synonymous with the passionate adventurers, aviators, cartographers and mountain climbers who wore his coats while pushing the boundaries of human experience.

Prada

The Prada brand dates back to the beginning of the last century. In 1913, Mario Prada opened a luxury store in the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II in Milan, selling leather handbags, travelling trunks, leather accessories and beauty cases, luxury accessories and articles of value. Thanks to its exclusively designed goods, handcrafted using fine materials and sophisticated techniques, Prada rapidly became a point of reference for European aristocracy and the most elegant members of the haute-bourgeoisie in Europe. In 1919, Prada became an official supplier to the Italian Royal Family. The group saw a turning point in the development of its activities at the end of the seventies, when Miuccia Prada, Mario’s grand-daughter, launched a partnership with Patrizio Bertelli, a Tuscan businessman already involved in the leather goods sector with Granello and Sir Robert. This partnership combined creativity and business ideas to commence a new era. In 1983, the Prada family opened a second store in the prestigious Via della Spiga in Milan. The new store showcased the new brand image as it blended traditional elements with a modern architectural setting and represented a revolution and a benchmark for luxury retail. In response to the growing demand for and appreciation of Prada products, the range was extended from leather goods (such as bags, luggage and accessories) to include footwear, as well as men’s and women’s ready-to-wear apparel. The first Prada women’s wear fashion show was held in Milan in 1988. In 1993, Ms. Miuccia Prada’s creative inspiration led to the establishment of a new brand Miu Miu designed for women who are particularly fashion-forward and interested in trendy and sophisticated fashion and lifestyle. Miu Miu now offers women’s ready-to-wear, leather goods and shoes.

Indian Premier League

Yes it’s back! The Indian Premier League popularly known as IPL, a Twenty20 cricket championship league in India which is one of the most popular and high rising tournaments of the day. This high profile game has only 20 overs and is by far the shortest form of Cricket ever played with the other forms having a standard of 50 overs. Inaugurated in 2008, this has been one of the most popular leagues of Cricket ever witnessed. Five years later, in 2013, its brand value was estimated at $3.03 billion. This has been one game that has witnessed so many controversies that insisted on the not so clean methods of winning the game but in spite of that it rules the roosts of cricket tournaments.

The 8 teams playing in the IPL currently are from different parts of India, each representing different states and cities. Our city Hyderabad proudly presents Sunrisers Hyderabad which replaced Deccan Charges last year after the team had been liquidated due to financial constraints and reasons. Sunrisers Hyderabad, also known as the SRH is owned by Kalanithi Maran who heads the Sun TV Network, hence the name Sunrisers. Player Shikar Dhawan captains the team, and their homeground is the Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium. This years’ team has some promising players on the up front. Shikar Dhawan, the Captain of the team is one such person. He has powerful batting and great fielding skills that make him a perfect fit for the T20 format. Dhawan had a great 2012 season, tallying 569 runs from 15 matches. The Sunrisers will hope he carries on the purple patch to beef up their batting in IPL 2014 Dale Steyn is another such player who proves to be a great asset for the team. He is quick, accurate and can swing the ball both ways, in short, Dale Steyn is a batsman’s nightmare, he is charming and friendly with amazing bowling tactics. The menacing Proteas pacer was part of the Royal Challengers Bangalore team for the first three IPL seasons before being bought by the Deccan Chargers in 2011. He is one of the most illuminating stars in the Sunrisers galaxy. So this season, IPL seems to be all set to showcase some great entertainment what with these fabulous players on the ground. Are you a lover of watching the match for real in a stadium, but you can’t because it’s held in a different city or you just cant seem to get your hands on the tickets that sell like hot cakes? Here are some options where you can enjoy watching the match in an atmosphere that is nothing short of the stadium.

I love IPL as I am a huge cricket fan and supporter. Sunrisers are obviously my favorite team as I belong to Hyderabad and also because they are amazing. IPL is one of its kind that brings forth foreign players and local players together and it’s a mix of various talents on one ground. It gives an amazing opportunity to the young talent out there as we have some seriously awesome underdogs in the city. Dale Steyn has always been my favorite and I always wished he played for India, and luckily the wish comes true for me in the form of him playing for Hyderabad. He is the God of Bowling! - Joseph Udith Raj, Employee

IPL according to me is fun firstly because it gets over in 20 overs and I dont have to wait too long for the match to end and also because there are players from all over the world in one team, like Dale Steyn who is my favorite player of the Sunrisers Hyderabad. I only love watching the matches in a Stadium because it gives such a good feel and the atmosphere is amazing. If I cant catch the match at a stadium, I always go out with friends to watch it at Testa Rosa or Oyster. - Lekha Kasinadhuni Article Assistant

RISE OF THE ‘SELFIE’ & ‘USIES’

44 APRIL, 2014

he selfie has arguably become the greatest photographic trend of our time. It’s always nice to document a good hair day or an outfit you love, especially with Instagram. There is a real feel-good attitude towards selfies, and as vain as it may be, you know that if you are not feeling great, there is someone who will ‘like’ your photo and tell you are pretty. It is also, just another way to tell a story through social networking: “Instead of saying you are going to work, a photo of you in your uniform does that.” This lack of knowledge about what we look like has a profound effect on what we think we look like. When people are asked to pick a photograph which they think looks most like them - from a series of photographs in which an actual photograph has been digitally altered to produce more attractive and less attractive versions - people are very bad at selecting the original photograph. In other words, we have an image of ourselves that tends to be younger and more attractive than we actually are. This might in part explain our obsession with selfies. For the first time we are able to take and retake pictures of ourselves until we can produce an image that come closer to matching our perception of what we think we look like. One theory is that the “selfie” tells other people how we want to be seen. A search on photo sharing app Instagram retrieves over 23 million photos uploaded with the hash tag #selfie, and a whopping 51 million with the hash tag #me.

1. Let there be light: Natural light is best. The ‘magic hour’ is the hour after sunrise and just before sunset, it will produce the most flattering sunlight. If natural light is missing, stand by a source of artificial light and make sure the flash is off.

How to take the perfect selfie

2. Out of arm’s way: Having your arm reached out in shot is only going to be so flattering. Experiment with a mini tripod for your Smartphone, or download a free self-timer app. 3. Rule of thirds: Try to think of how to compose in thirds, like eyes a third of the way up, head a third of the way into the picture - ideally from the top or side, ensure a space between you and the background, to achieve a depth of image. 4. Your ‘good’ side: Positioning the camera slightly above your eye line tends to be the most flattering, angle your face or body to one side. 5. Be bold: You might feel silly, but trying out a new look or different hairdo can help you feel more confident. Changing your look can help make you feel just a little different or more fancy in a photo. And this confidence will shine through your final images. Add a prop such as a hat, scarf or piece of jewellery.

Foolery All The Way FEATURE

It’s a lazy Tuesday morning; you are still hovering in the midst of dreams and reality and are quite enjoying yourself when the sudden ring of your phone stirs you awake. You put it to your ear only to hear a distant fierce voice telling you that you have been fired and to collect your termination letter soon and you jerk upright and scream “Whaaaat” in your phone only to have your best friend laugh merrily on the other end saying “April Fools!!!” Irritating? Well, not really. It’s April Fools round the corner and everyone is gearing up for it by formulating new ways of how to fool someone on this day. April fools is a day to celebrate foolishness, undoubtedly! A day when you try to be the safest, target everyone around, and fool them in any possible way. Last time I played this prank on my little sister who loves Oreo, I replaced the cream filling with toothpaste, and loved watching her expression, it was hilarious. Keep fooling people and be cautious, it’s April fool time! Aishwarya Singhi, Fashion Designer

So this April Fools, lets all put our thinking brains on the job and bring out some awesome pranks that would make this April Fools a memorable one. Jessica David asks these Hyderabadi’s about the pranks played by them or on them!

I made a fake in Bharat Matrimony id, giving my married friends contact number, for marriage proposal and suddenly she started getting enquiry calls. It was after a week I told her it was me who did that, she was puzzled and had no idea what was happening with her! Manjot Marwah, M.D at Cutting Edge In today's times, April Fools is looked forward to with a lot of fervor. Everyone innovates new pranks or follows the same age old pranks on people who are easy enough to fall for it. Be it the basic pranks like swapping salt for sugar or prank calling, people are all for this crazy day of pranks. Here below are the top 3 Pranks that have been popularized in the recent past. Last year April, Google pulled a prank that almost everyone fell prey to. The homepage of Google displayed their brand new innovation called Google nose. According to this, if we typed in a random item on the search box, the picture of that would appear and if we went really close to it, we could smell it right through our screens. Excited, many of the people tried smelling and sniffing, only to have a huge April fools shown to their faces. In Sweden, way back in the year 1962 was the year of Black and White television. It was announced that according to a technical expert, there was one way to project the black and white images on the TV into color. All they had to do was take a pair of stockings, cut them and tie them around the screen. It would help in bending the light rays from the tv in such a way that the images would turn into color. Thousands of people fell for this hoax, and even today, people recollect how their parents got excited and tied stockings around their television sets. Talk about fantastic pranks!

He had strung himself up as a prank to scare his ex-wife, using a lineman's harness similar to those used by utility crews. The authorities warned that he would face a fine of up to $1,000 and a year in jail for his prank.

I and my fiancé were chilling at a lounge where a waiter comes up and gives me a chit. The chit said *am watching you*, I was shocked, I had goose bumps all over, I started panicking. All sorts of thoughts went through my mind, when he saw my tensed face he simply smiled and said “Iam watching you baby”. He made fun of my tensed expressions and we laughed over it. A colleague of mine used a Phantom Keystroker on the desktop screen I use with my Laptop. I couldn’t locate it as it was on the backside. Now what this evil instrument does is, it starts playing pranks with your computer and drives the user insane. The Keystroker emulates a keyboard and a mouse and periodically makes random mouse movements, toggles caps lock and types out odd garbage text and phrases. I had to call in the IT to solve the issue and then my colleagues bursted out laughing and then they revealed how they played the April fool prank on me. Nishit Mathur, Employee at Facebook

What's an April fool’s day without a prank that seemed like a prank alright, but a terrible one at it. Here's presenting the stupid hoax of the day. Randy Wood's who got divorced from his wife, decided to play a prank on her. He called her up and asked her to come over, telling her that he had something to show her. Obligingly she drove over, only to find him hanging by a noose from a tree in his front yard. Terrified, she immediately dialed 911. Emergency services, including firefighters, policemen,

Pulse Balancing All you needed to know about a healthy and stress free life.

hat happens when you are ill and you don’t feel like taking any medication or even if you do it doesn’t work? Ever wondered why? We have pulse balancing expert Dr. L. Umaa Venkatesh clarifying all your doubts about health issues that makes your life a pain. She will also lead us to secret of a healthy and peaceful life. In this field for more than 10 years now, she says everyday is still a new experience and research goes on to find cure for every disease possible.

W

Dr. L. Umaa Venkatesh, who did her MD in Acupuncture from the University Of Colombo, Sri Lanka, has over 14 years of experience in acupuncture and 12 years of experience in Pulse Balancing. She runs Santoshi Medical Research Foundation dedicated to finding solution for health problems. She implements an advanced technique of Acupuncture known as ‘Pulse Balancing’ through Single Needle System. Dr. Umaa says “our body is made up of 5 energies, fire, earth, air, water and wood. These energies present in universe should reach our bodies effectively to lead a healthy and normal life, and when it doesn’t the problems arises, from minute health problem to bigger diseases. It is then when pulse balancing comes into picture, which helps in removing the blockages which helps absorb the important energies and deliver to the whole body.” Pulse balancing can be rated to one of the most basic and oldest method of healing. It’s as old as the human existence itself. Ever wondered how the sages in Himalayas lived without food? Well it’s because they observe energy from around them which helps their body to live as normally as anyone. With our lifestyle and food consumption the blockages 56 APRIL, 2014

often happen restricting us to not so healthy life and yet suffer in spite of all possibilities available. “Pulse balancing is an easy process which the doctor can begin with analyzing your ‘Naadi’ and treat it within certain prescribed settings. This procedure is wonderful because it not only treats the problem you have but, also helps analyze the disease or health problem you are likely to suffer in future and treat it in advance.” Dr. Umaa adds “our main concentration is to promote healthy generations. People need to understand the importance of energy and lead a healthy life. People don’t realize that if they suffer from something, there is more than one leading to problem. For example if you need to grow a tree, you just don’t need any land, you need a fertile soil, water, air and proper sunlight for its growth. In the same way human body is very much like any natures being, it needs energy to exist, grow and heal.” She has been successfully treating diseases such as kidney dysfunction, diabetes, heart disorders, infertility, thyroid and many more which needs attention. While modern day science is unable to fathom some medical mysteries, she is able to identify diseases that a patient may probably be a victim of, even 3 years later. A clear study of a patients ‘naadi’ gives her insight into the fitness level of the person. What are the Benefits of Pulse Balancing and what are the disease that can be cured through it?

Reduces Obesity, Blemishes in Skin, Relieves Constipation, Regulates B.P, Natural Solution for Infertility, Corrects Speech Disorders. Pulse Balanced Parents can produce Healthy children, Controls Diabetes, Balances the Hormonal Secretion, Regulates Menstrual Problems, Increases Hemoglobin Count, Corrects GERD ( Gastro Esophageal reflux disease), Increases Immunity, Corrects Neuro Disorders, Regulates brain disorders, Controls hair-fall Improves proper vision (including power in eyes), Gives Relief for Diseases such as Asthma, Wheezing, Thyroid, BP, Diabetes, Kidney related Problems, Urinary related problems, Circulatory problems, Psoriasis, Allergy, Liver related problems, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Corrects Sleeping Disorders, Streamlines eating pattern, Improves decision making skills, Increases grasping power, Gives Peaceful Mind, and lot more which might just give you a relief and healthy life.

“From time immemorial, acupuncture has often been identified as a strenuous or painful treatment method involving the usage of innumerable needles. Quite contrarily, this is where the doctor scores; for she has adopted the ‘classic’ single needle treatment method which is absolutely pain free.” Interestingly, as the doctor puts it, there are about 4448 diseases and all these diseases are an outcome of an energy block within a body. A single needle can cure all of these 4448 varied diseases thereby making pulse balancing the only treatment method that has a cure for sure. The beauty of this treatment is that a normal person can regularly balance his pulse thus he can stay healthy throughout his life and can live a “quality life”. Many people wait until they are suffering from chronic pain to seek help. Pain is only a manifestation of a deeper lying condition and generally takes longer to resolve chronic cases. How does the whole process work? The patient has to come on an empty stomach during first visit. The Naadi is diagnosed and based on that a single needle is pierced at the corresponding point. The needle transmits energy. It removes the blockage and allows

the energy to flow freely. A Single needle is used even if the patients have more than one disease and the diseases are cured simultaneously. There are no side effects in this treatment. Not only diseases but one can feel a change in the characteristic (Mind). Are there any side effects from this process if treatment? None. It’s an absolutely painless, drugless procedure with no side effects. Can lifespan of an individual be prolonged with regular basis of balancing one's pulse? Life span cannot be prolonged, but the quality of life a person lives will be enhanced. There will be no sufferings on his death bed. A person who balances his pulse regularly will live peacefully and leave peacefully.

Movie Reviews

Queen Director: Vikas Bahl Starring: Kanagana Ranaut, Rajkumar Rao and Lisa Haydon This is a film that is no less tangy than the gol gappas that Rajouri Garden girl Rani Mehra rustles up in an Italian pizzeria in faraway Amsterdam. The bright and breezy Queen does not require even “two minutes” working its magic. It hits its straps from the very outset. Queen is spicy, balmy and uplifting. Like good gol gappas, it leaves a zesty aftertaste that lingers on until long after the ride has ended. It warms the heart and tickles the funny bone with equal force. No sooner does the film open in the home of a West Delhi mithaiwala amid the hustle and bustle of an impending wedding than it becomes amply apparent that the audience is in for a treat of an unprecedented kind. The film makes a feminist statement, but it does not put up the ism at its core for display like an obtrusive pennant. And what a Queen Kangana Ranaut makes! Who ever knew that this often underrated actress had such enormous reserves of talent? Kangana is the heart and soul of Queen and she does not strike a single false note. But also do spare a thought for Rajkumar Rao, who plays the utterly unlikeable, if not out and out obnoxious, Vijay Dhingra. Don’t miss Queen for anything. It is a sparkling little gem. 300 - Rise of an Empire Director: Noam Murro Starring: Eva Green, Sullivan Stapleton, Rodrigo Santoro, Lena Headey, Hans Matheson Driven by vengeance, the drama in the ‘300: Rise of an Empire’ runs concurrently to the original ‘300’ but from a different perspective, the naval warfare. While the earlier film concentrated on the land fight at Thermopylae, this one concentrates on the battle in the Aegean Sea, with the storyline running in parallel most often. On the performance front, the film belongs to Eva Green. Clad in fitting black leather, she plays Artemisia from the bottom of her heart. Her actions throughout the film are notable as hers is the only character that has a complete arc and any kind of real context. Cast opposite her is Sullivan Stapleton as Themistokles. Though he is good, he is not too impressive. He lacks the charisma and aura of a go-getter. Director Noam Murro, who had earlier delivered the romantic comedy ‘Smart People’, has probably found it hard to ape the original narrative structure of ‘300’, and it shows. The dialogues are too feeble and laboured. What`s more? The characters have inconsistent accents, which make the entire involvement far-fetched. After half an hour of watching the film, you feel the film rambles and gradually it becomes monotonous and wearisome. Raja Rani Director: Atlee Starring: Nayantara, Arya Raja Rani is a romantic comedy entertainer and lead actors’ performances are the main attractions in the film. Atlee’s arresting screenplay, GV Prakash Kumar’s songs and background score, George C Williams’ cinematography, a few romance and comic sequences are its other highlights. A few dragging moments are its big drawbacks. Atlee Kumar, a former associate of successful director Shankar, has chosen a beautiful romantic love story, which revolves around the love stories of the couples who decide to marry against their wishes. The director packed the movie with lot of sentimental, romantic and comic sequences. Especially, Arya and Nayantara’s fights and romance will keep you glued to the screen. Raja Rani begins with the marriage of John (Arya) and Regina (Nayanthara), who have agreed to get married just to make their parents happy. The couple does not like each other and they try to irritate each other in every possible way. But a consequence brings them together and they share each other past love stories.

ENTERTAINMENT Deepika Padukone Director?

Assistant

Bollywood’s current Numero Uno actress Deepika Padukone wants to now don the hat of an assistant director. The actress is apparently so impressed by the script of Zoya Akhtar’s next film that she is keen to be associated with the project in any capacity. The film is about a dysfunctional Punjabi family that goes on a luxury cruise together. The movie stars her current beau Ranveer Singh and Priyanka Chopra. Though the actress has not yet expressed her interest to the director, but she is very keen on being associated with the film.

The news doing rounds is that Bigg Boss 7 inmates and love birds, who met on the reality show, have secretly gotten engaged. According to a report Armaan proposed to his lady love with a solitaire ring and went down on his knees. Armaan and Tanishaa allegedly became a couple when they fell in love on the controversial reality show, Bigg Boss 7. Post their Bigg Boss stint, the two have been spotted at several events, be it the Lakme Fashion Week, or the Colors’ Party or the two holidaying with friends in Goa. Only time will tell if these two have really gotten engaged or it’s just a rumor!

Chris Brown to Remain in Jail Shilpa Shetty Copies Aamir Khan

Cashing in on the popularity of ‘Satyamev Jayate’, Shilpa Shetty and her entrepreneur husband Raj Kundra are all set to come up with a new show on the same lines as Aamir Khan’s show. Report says that the show will be called Soney Ka Dil and will feature unsung heroes ordinary people who have gone out of their way to help others in need. The show will be produced and hosted by Shilpa Shetty. Though the show has lot of similarities with Aamir’s Satyamev Jayate, a crew-member from Soney Ka Dil denies this.

The 24-year-old singer was recently arrested after being dismissed from a Malibu rehab facility for violating its rules. He was being treated for anger management and other issues there. Brown has been in rehab since November, when Brandlin ordered him to receive treatment as part of his sentence for a 2009 attack on then-girlfriend Rihanna. A judge says R&B singer Chris Brown must remain in jail until a hearing in late April because he failed to remain in a court-mandated rehab program. Superior Court Judge James R. Brandlin said that he was troubled by comments that Brown made during his rehab stay, in which the singer allegedly said he was good at using guns and knives.

Making a Case for Selena Gomez Everybody has a weakness. For Selena Gomez, that is apparently Justin Bieber. The former Disney star was recently spotted with Bieber in Texas after he flattered her via Twitter during the Academy Awards. It’s a shame that Gomez is so adherently linked to Bieber, since she has something special that is worthy of our attention. Hopefully her association with Bieber doesn’t drag her down to the point that when she’s fully realizing her talent nobody will be able to see past the sensationalism to care.

ENTERTAINMENT

Director Rohit Shetty has expressed a desire to make Hindi version of ‘Bad Boys’, a hit Hollywood film, with Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan in the lead. Rohit Shetty revealed this in an episode of popular TV chat show ‘Koffee with Karan’, hosted by filmmaker Karan Johar. Karan Johar asked Rohit Shetty, one of the top notch directors in Bollywood currently, what he will do if he was stuck on an island with Shah Rukh and Salman. “I’ll start making Bad Boys,” he promptly replied. The episode, where Rohit Shetty was joined by director Zoya Akhtar, was indeed an interesting one!

Dhoni Slaps 100 Crore Suit on Zee

IPL 2014: Kevin Pietersen will lead Delhi Daredevils this season

Crying foul and alleging motivated attack on his reputation by private television network Zee, cricketer and Team India captain M S Dhoni slapped an Rs 100 crore defamation suit on the channel. Madras high court admitted his application, and restrained the Zee news network from telecasting any news/discussion/debate concerning Dhoni’s alleged role in IPL match fixing and betting scam. Immediately after the submission of the report, the news channel came up with a series of news items alleging that Dhoni was into betting and fixing scandal. The channel resorted to “unique tactics” to continue the tirade, he said adding that they organized news reports, debate shows and uploaded stories on the internet.

Delhi Daredevils, appointed swashbuckling England batsman Kevin Pietersen as their captain for the upcoming IPL with wicketkeeper-batsman Dinesh Karthik as his deputy. “Kevin Pietersen will captain the all new Delhi Daredevils during the seventh edition of the Pepsi Indian Premier League. Wicketkeeper-batsman Dinesh Karthik would be the vice-captain,” the Daredevils said in a statement. The 33-year-old former England skipper was expected to take over as captain given his formidable reputation as a T20s batsman. He was named the ‘Man of the Tournament’ in the 2010 World T20 Championship for helping England bag their maiden crown.

Pawan Kalyan may join hands with BJP

Popular Telugu actor Pawan Kalyan, who floated a political party recently, is likely to have an electoral alliance with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for the forthcoming elections. Pawan, who launched Jana Sena with the slogan of ‘Congress hatao, desh bachao’ (remove Congress, save the country) will meet senior BJP leaders in Delhi. He is likely to hold talks with BJP President Rajnath Singh, senior leaders LK Advani and Sushma Swaraj. While launching the party on March 14, the actor bitterly criticised the Congress for dividing Andhra Pradesh but spared BJP and TDP. He had declared that he is ready to join hands with any party except Congress. Both BJP and TDP reportedly sent feelers to Pawan for an alliance. They believe the young star would help them attract voters, especially the youth in Seemandhra or residuary Andhra Pradesh.

“The channel went to the extent of saying that the entire IPL is a kind of ‘Casino Cricket’, where everyone from the BCCI President, players, captain, team owners and other officials make money and every match is pre-determined as to which team is going to win,” Dhoni said. APRIL, 2014 61
