ABOUT FREILOT

LEARN MORE ABOUT OUR WORK

FREILOT is a pilot supported by the European Commission DG Information Media and Society under the CIP (Competitiveness and Innovation Programme).

Currently more than 100 trucks are using FREILOT services in the four pilot sites.

During one year of the operational pilot scheme the FREILOT consortium will quantify energy efficiency benefits and ensure a viable business implementation of the four mentioned elements.

You are welcome to follow the work by visiting our website, where you may also view the video!

In addition, the consortium is developing business models, addressing legal aspects and other deployment barriers, so that the implemented solutions can continue running even after the end of the European Commission funding. Duration: April 2009 – March 2012. Budget: €4m (50% supported by the European Commission) Project Partners: ERTICO–ITS Europe (Coordinator), VOLVO, Renault Trucks, PEEK Traffic, CTAG, CERTH, CNRS - LET, Université Lumière Lyon 2, Interface Transport, MLC-EUSKADI, THETIS S.p.A., GERTEK SA, POLIS, AZKAR, Nanuk, Van den Broeck Logistics, city of Helmond, city of Bilbao, Ville de Lyon and Grand Lyon. http://www.freilot.eu/en/media_room/freilot_video/ For additional information: Zeljko Jeftic, FREILOT Coordinator, ERTICO – ITS Europe Email: z.jeftic@mail.ertico.com GSM: +32 479 49 47 67 Website: www.freilot.eu

FREILOT VISION & MISSION

FREILOT FOR CITIES

FREILOT FOR FLEET OPERATORS

European cities urgently need solutions for

The cities of Bilbao (Spain), Helmond (The Netherlands), Lyon (France) and Krakow (Poland) have joined their efforts under the FREILOT umbrella to pilot the elements of the FREILOT scheme in an integrated, incentive-based, win-win way. Based on their local needs, cities have implemented either a sub-set or all elements of the FREILOT scheme which in local implementation, could look as follows:

When the FREILOT scheme is fully implemented in a city, any fleet operator using the acceleration/speed limiters function and eco-dri ving support in their vehicles will experience the following benefits:

congestion and costs, as well as reduced fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. To help them achieve these objectives the FREILOT Consortium has developed a holistic and integrated approach for urban freight, combining various measures that can be implemented without excessive cost and with the necessary public acceptance. FREILOT aims to demonstrate in four linked pilot projects that a reduction of up to 25% in fuel consumption in urban areas is feasible. The scheme focuses on:

• By implementing a traffic management system for selective priority at intersections, cities will have the possibility to “steer” goods traffic towards preferred roads at preffered times of the day.

Traffic management

»

Energy efficient intersection control

• Cities are able to give selective priority to vehicles equipped with acceleration/adaptive speed limiters and eco-driving support functions. • In addition, in those cities where it is needed, the partners will offer a service to these delivery vehicles of efficient management of delivery spaces.

It is expected that cities will benefit from reduced CO2 emissions and better control of traffic flow, leading to better environment and air quality for the citizens.

Real-time delivery space management

• Lower fuel consumption. • Priority at intersections on certain roads and/or during certain times of day. • Improved operational efficiency and reliability thanks to the delivery space management service. In addition, the delivery space management functionality should reduce negative impacts of double-lane stops, and improve work and safety conditions for drivers in urban areas.

The next step towards energy efficient urban freight starts here...

True energy efficiency can only be achieved if different stakeholders work together. Bruno Chazalette Director, Soft Offer & Fuel Strategic Planning – Renault Trucks and FREILOT chair

FREILOT offers practical solutions for mobility challenges in cities. Assuming positive results from the pilot phase, the service will be continued after the project. Gert Blom Strategic Advisor Mobility – City of Helmond

It is very important for fleet operators to improve in all possible ways. A brilliant opportunity to improve is the FREILOT project, here we make gigantic steps in saving fuel, reducing CO2, win time and reduce stress with the piloted solutions. Karel van Rooij CEO – Van Den Broek Logistics
