According to Miller, Duncan will also receive airfare for herself and a parent or guardian to go to Washington DC to be recognized there and see her work on display in the Capital. Regarding the importance of art and studying it at Saint Clair County Community College, Miller shared that SC4 students can use their education and training in arts in many ways. “Time at SC4 is time well spent,” said Miller. “SC4 is becoming the cultural center of the Blue Water Area.”

attending SC4. At least that’s what the flyers around campus say. Talk about a lack of information. Considering that there is a Master Card/Debit decal and a Higher One Credit Union logo in the corner, there’s a lot of questions that need answering. Most students would feel a little insecure concerning a card that seems as though it requires one to sign up for a mysterious bank account that said student had no hand in authorizing and creating. It would seem immoral for a college to force an unknown bank account on students whose shoulders already sit heavy with loans, financial aid, etc. Rest assured. Kelly Lindsay, who works in the Student Success Center, has shed light

on the confusion concerning registration of the card. “The card requires activation, however, the Higher One account is a separate process and not required here on campus. Students seem to think that the activation of the card and the bank account are the same thing. They are not. The card need only be activated for use at the gym, library and other campus organizations. The bank account is just an option for using the card for monetary purposes, like financial aid. It is not required, only activation of the card,” said Lindsay. The card will also be required to purchase and sell back books at the bookstore, which only requires that you show the card. Cash and check transactions

or transactions with a different card are just fine, as long as students have the physical card, activated or not. Breathe easy, students. There are still no required financial accounts here at SC4’s campus. To attain a Skippers OneCard by the required date (cards and activation can be attained after the due date as well), students should go to the Student Success Center located in Room 120 of the Applied Technology Center, across the hallway from Financial Aid Services. Hours of operation are 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Mondays and Thursdays, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Wednesdays, and 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Fridays. Cards can be activated for on campus use via skippersonecard.com and following the instructions.

Is it worth selling your books back? Liz Whittemore Photo Editor Owned by the Nebraska Book Company, SC4’s bookstore is a place where students can buy textbooks, purchase SC4 merchandise and buy scantrons minutes before that forgotten test. It is also where you can sell your textbooks. Elena Cuellar, an SC4 student studying Criminal Justice, was disheartened when trying to resell her books. “I paid $150 for a textbook, and the bookstore said they would give me $1 for it,” Cuellar said. Though the bookstore has comparative buying prices for textbooks, buyback is nowhere near as attractive. In one instance on sc4bookstore.com, for a new CJ 101 textbook priced at $183 and $137 used, whether students bought the book used or new, they will only be given $10 for the book. The math: If you buy new: $173 loss. Used: $127 loss. According to a disclaimer on the bookstore’s website, the prices are estimated and they reserve the right to change the prices at any time. “The buyback price should

There are other options. If you are unsure that a professor will utilize a textbook, check with the professor beforehand or borrow from someone who has already taken the class. “I had a biology class where the professor said the textbook was needed in order to pass. I bought it, but we never ended up using it,” said Shelby Castillo, and Art Education major. A local alternative is sc4bookexchange.com. The SC4 Book Exchange is run by Scott Werner, an area man who attended school at SC4. Werner had the idea after having difficulty finding a book he needed for a class and couldn’t afford at the campus bookstore. “I was looking on Craigslist and thought how great it would be if there was a website with the same idea, but focused on textbooks,” said Werner. The site does not have a shipping option. Instead, users get in touch with sellers to make the exchange since it is local. Posting textbook ads is free. Gay Straight Alliance Drag Show is a huge success Angie Stoecklin Staff Writer On April 17th entertainers from all across Michigan gathered at the SC4 fine arts theater to perform in the Gay Straight Alliance’s 3rd annual drag show. The event was hosted by Andy Gardner, who is a host and performer at Seeker’s bar in Port Huron. Along with his co-host, a drag show performer known as Patty Cake, they provided an exciting and comfortable atmosphere from the very beginning. The performers were bursting with energy. That energy was transferred to the audience, who by the third performance were rushing the stage with dollar bills to hand to the dancers, who fluidly incorporated the

transfer of tips into their dance routines. The audience’s participation did not stop there. A couple dancers pulled members of the crowd onstage giving them an opportunity to dance alongside them. The show even featured a kid’s dance off, which further fueled the audience’s enthusiasm throughout the two hour show. All proceeds from the drag show, including the tips that the audience gave to the dancers, went towards a local charity. Blue Water Safe Horizons is an all-inclusive organization dedicated to helping those in dire situations such as domestic violence and homelessness. By the end of the night, the GSA had raised $1,156, which is well over the amount raised at last

year’s drag show. Co-host Patty Cake said at the start of the show, “It’s great to see the community come together for this cause and to support what we are about,

which is to stop the hate.” Judging by all of the happiness and acceptance in the room, it looks like the goal to stop the hate in the local community isn’t too far off.

Generation shift? Reachelle Kocis Staff Writer Same sex marriage and the legalization of marijuana are usually labeled as extreme leftist or liberal ideals (some would even say the ideals of subculture). But the mainstream media has reported that recent opinion polls show majority approval ratings in both previously controversial areas. On April 4, usnews.com reported that the majority of American adults (52%) approved the legalization of marijuana. On March 26, cbsnews.com reported that the majority of Americans (53%) support same sex marriage. This political climate change is being called a “Generation Shift”.

So, I wanted to find out what our generation thought about all of this. Jessie Simmons of St. Clair County, a 2nd year Psychology major, wasn’t shocked to hear these results. She approved both issues stating “Marijuana should be legalized because it is a waste of funds on victimless crimes.” She also views marriage as a human right that should not be denied to anyone. Kayla Flanagan of St. Clair County, a 1st year communications major, was a bit surprised about the majority’s approval of legalization, but she approved medicinal marijuana. “It can help a lot of people and has a variety of uses.” She also approved same sex marriage.

Both Jessie and Kayla didn’t see this change in American ideology as being a generation shift, but more of a cultural enlightenment. Adam Kolasinski, 2nd year transfer student, did see this as a generation shift, but it was no big surprise. He also agreed with same sex marriage but, “probably not the legalization of marijuana.” After the 2012 election of President Obama for a second term, the Republican Party’s political analysts suggested the re-evaluation of the party’s platform because the majority of voters were no longer white men. If young voters are the “Generation Shift” that the media speaks of, then could we say the Republican Party is also

generally shifting? On April 4, abcnews.com reported that today, 53% of Republicans approve of the legalization of marijuana (up from 36% in 2010). And more Republican politicians are leaning a little left on the issue as well, while Rand Paul doesn’t approve but he is advocating for more lenient marijuana laws. According to time.com, GOP congressman Mike Coffman did oppose the referendum in his home state of Colorado until it passed with 55%. He signed a bill warning with the justice dept. to respect his state laws that defy federal statue. Could we call the GOP “Generally Shifty?”

Healthcare reform: still a mystery

Obama signs the Affordable Health care Act into law. Photo Credit: George Miller, used under Creative Commons License.

Garrett Summerville Copy Editor As the Affordable Healthcare Act comes closer to going into full effect, the impact it will have on the job market remains uncertain. This is not due to legislations within the bill not being made public. The reasons for the uncertainty are more complicated. One of the legislations within the act states a company that employs fifty people or more must provide healthcare to all full time employees. This is where much of the confusion begins. No one knows how employers will respond to this new law. The first priority of any successful business is to increase income. Now, businesses will have to

find ways to increase their income with this unavoidable expense. It is expected that employers will respond in one of several ways: avoid hiring any new, full-time employees before reaching the fifty employee quota; cut part-time employees to compensate for the new expense; cut full-time employees’ hours, if possible, so they will not be required to give them healthcare. Some people believe that the act will have a more positive effect on the job market. Secretary of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sebelius wrote on this topic in March for healthcare.gov. In her blog, she quoted the Congressional Budget Office, who has projected that labor reduction, as a result of the act, will be close to half a percent. She also said that private job growth has

been on the rise over the past 36 months, despite the coming requirements for employers. At this point, financial experts still can’t come to a definitive conclusion. Those who have a more optimistic view rely on projections of current trends and the effects that similar laws have had in the past. Those who take a pessimistic approach are looking at the behavior of American business owners, who are not known for making their employees’ wellbeing a top priority. There is, however, reasons to believe that this coming reform will help the job market instead of destroying it. In early March, USA Today conducted an indepth study of the Affordable Healthcare Act. They found that cost saving measures within the act will “keep medical prices flat.” Even though an

additional twenty-one million Americans will be receiving healthcare in 2014, the costs should not drastically increase immediately. If the costs of healthcare can remain affordable, it will create an incentive for employers to hire. Reasonable wages and benefits attract people to jobs, so the business that can provide healthcare will be in high demand. The healthcare reform might be an incentive for people to work more hours, which makes them a commodity for employers. The Affordable Healthcare Act is definitely a risk. There are those who still say it’s a risk not worth taking, and the possible long-term effects are worse than our current way of providing medical care. The thousands of Americans currently unable to pay for medical care might disagree.

Opinion EA could do better

Nicholas Wedyke Managing Editor After being named Consumerist’s Worst Company in America for a second year in a row, video game developer Electronic Arts responds to the unflattering award. Electronic Arts COO Peter Moore’s post on EA’s website titled “We can do better” is the company’s response to the annual poll held by Consumerist.com. In Moore’s post he quotes the proverb “the tallest trees catch the most wind” in regard to the massive scope of EA and its critics. The development and distribution company is a titan in the video game industry, with revenue coming in at $1.8 Billion USD this fiscal quarter alone. But Moore doesn’t stop there. He begins to list and debunk each of the reasons EA was voted “the worst.” “Many continue to claim the Always-On function in SimCity is a DRM scheme. It’s not,” explained Moore in his post. The problem with this statement is that an “alwayson” function in a video game is used for the sole purpose of preventing piracy and keeping track of the user’s game; otherwise known as DRM, or digital rights management.

EA sells the “always-on” function as an upgrade for the interactivity and functionality of a video game. This can be true in some regards, but this is DRM, and calling this a false claim is outlandish. Moore went on to comment about micro-transactions in video games, which has been introduced into many new EA games. “Some people think that free-to-play games and micro-transactions are a pox on gaming. Tens of millions more are playing and loving those games.” Up until recently, the idea of “micro-transactions” within a video game seemed innocent enough, because the rare time a gamer came across this was in a Massively Multiplayer

Online game, a Facebook game or on a mobile platform such as IOS or Android. The microtransaction has made its way to AAA titles like Dead Space 3 (developed by EA), where users can purchase upgrades and receive them instantaneously, instead of earning them “ingame.” According to ScrewAttack. com, EA has received a lot of negative feedback from this, buying a way through a difficult game seems wrong. Exploiting difficulty in a video game to receive a profit may be a practice in capitalism, but EA needs to realize that the consumer is more important that the dollar. My problem with EA is the arrogance and the very blatant

Thursday April 25, 20l3 ignorance to what the consumer wants. Moore and the rest of EA needs to know that gamers do love the games that are put out by EA, but at the end of the day gamers are in love with the licenses that EA owns, not EA itself. Listen to the internet, EA. Being voted the worst only means the company can move up. The consumers have made themselves abundantly clear that they are not satisfied with EA’s practices, but rather than shooting holes in arguments against EA, why not attempt to fix them or even acknowledge the problem. To sight a proverb, “There’s none so deaf as those who will not hear.”

smoke, but it is also the right of the nonsmokers to not have to pass through a cloud of smoke on their way to class. For the past four or so years, I have been struggling with my own addiction to nicotine. I’ve quit and restarted dozens of times. When I enrolled in this 2013 winter semester, I found myself once again, digging myself an unhealthy hole. My theory is that this is because smoking has always been a social vice for me. It’s all too easy to follow a friend out of a campus building and ask them for a cigarette. Of course it was nobody’s choice but mine, but it would be a lot easier if the option never existed. It seems that the initiative to create a smoke free campus is just a continuation of a changing culture. According to the Americans for Nonsmokers Rights website, the majority of Americans do NOT smoke, and the number of nonsmokers is growing as more options for quitting arise. Options such as electronic cigarettes and hypnosis have become growing trends within the last five years. So, a smoke free campus just may be what many SC4 students (including myself) need in order to kick this nasty habit.

“Beer: have your attention yet?”

Beer, beer and more beer. Staged photo by Kristopher Reynolds

Kristopher Reynolds Staff Writer Summer is on the way, and most college students at some point or another stop to enjoy a tasty brew. With the expansion of microbreweries in Michigan, Bud Light and Pabst Blue Ribbon have made way for even more varieties, styles and crafted beers available for consumption, leaving one question: where on Earth to start? Beers are often separated into two categories: light and dark. What many fail to see are the various types located in between, and the abundance of different palate-pleasing aromas and flavors associated with each. Pale ales and pale lagers are a little closer to home, as this category includes American and Canadian favorites such as Bud Light, Coors, Labatt Blue,

Milwaukee’s Best and Pabst Blue Ribbon. Pale beers tend to be popular as they are not only generally cheap in price, but also tend to have higher alcohol content (usually above 5%). They tend to have a very hops-and-wheat oriented flavor, and are less filling than darker cousins, allowing them to be drunk much easier in excess. Pale ales themselves can be separated into multiple categories. Belgian pale ale tends to focus more on the hops than other flavors, and include import brands such as St. Pauli’s Girl and Stella Artois. Belgians have lower alcohol content in the pale ale department (under 5%). India Pale Ales, or I.P.A. as more commonly known, have a very strong hops-and-fruit flavoring, and tend to have a high alcohol content (between 6-9%). These are only two of the many varieties.

In dark beer territory, things become even more expansive. Stouts, Nut Brown Ales and Porters name a few of the subtypes. Stouts tend to be more filling, strongly flavored and usually have lower alcohol contents (under 5%). They attain their color by the malted barley used for flavor. Color of the beer is relevant to the color of the roasted barley used in brewing. Stouts are quite common in America, the most famous being the Irish-style Guinness, which has a very bitter, barley-saturated flavor and a near-black coloration. Others include Old Rasputin Imperial and Sierra Nevada’s Narwhal Stout. Some stouts are flavored ingredients like coffee, chocolate or in some cases fruit. Nut Brown Ales, an English creation, includes a variety of caramel-colored brews that are flavored with various types of

nuts. One of the better known varieties includes Newcastle Nut Brown Ale, which has seen a surge of popularity in America. Michigan Breweries also produces their own version of a nut ale. Porters, also an English creation, include deep brown to black hued ales that tend to have a very complex palate. The flavor is both very sweet, and at times, almost overwhelmingly bitter. Porters are brewed a very similar way to Stouts. A more famous porter would be Anchor Bay Steam Porter. Five beers to try before one dies include Newcastle Nut Brown Ale, Guinness Foreign Extra, Magic Hat’s Vinyl Black I.P.A., Viru Ethiopian Pale Ale and Boddington’s Pub Ale.

The four-piece electronic rock band from Algonac formed in 2009, dispersed for a while, but got back together in 2012 Members consist of lead vocalist and bass player Andrew Guay, guitarist and vocals Brendon Guay, lead guitarist Erik Steele and keyboardist and drummer Justin Neuner. A few members have had other bands under their belt before forming The Night Away. Steele was in Finding Eden, a Marysville band, and

brothers Drew and Brendon were in Sweeter with the Tendency; an Algonac band that broke up in 2007 but had shared the stage with now-famous bands such as We Came as Romans and I See Stars. “When that broke up (SWTT) I did my own thing acoustically for a bit,” said Drew. “We love music, we’ve been doing it forever and we just never gave up.” “They’re a good group of guys and they’re great live,” said David Somervell, an Algonac resident. “I think they’re music is progressing, something that could be heard on the radio. And it has. According to Drew, The Night Away has been

played during the Homeboy Show on 89x (88.7 FM radio) Sunday nights at 10 p.m. The band just put out a new song, a cover of Taylor Swift’s “I Knew You Were Trouble”. All of their songs are available for download free of charge on Facebook.com/TheNightAway. The band is playing May 4 for

their “May the 4th Be With You” benefit show at Bridges, located at 1101 4th Street in Port Huron. Attendees are encouraged to bring canned food which will go to Helping Hands Charity. The show has a line-up of six bands; tickets are $5 in advance, $7 at the door.

Seven Story Fall will rise again Liz Whittemore Photo Editor What started as a three-piece band in 2002, after multiple members coming and going, founding member Hunter Kennedy is all that’s left. Seven Story Fall, or 7sf, is a pop/rock alternative band from Wayne, Michigan. “Running into dedication problems and having to replace people; that is always the worst experience in a band, especially when you’re close with them,” said Kennedy, vocalist and guitarist for 7sf. Seven Story Fall is not new to the music scene, having played shows with bands such as Chiodos and From First

to Last and being featured in magazines and newspapers such as AP Magazine and the Detroit Free Press. “Me and a few friends started it as a hobby and I continued it as a job,” said Kennedy. “I want to be as good as I can and take my talent as far as it can go.” In March, Seven Story Fall was a featured artist in the Akademia Music Awards, leaving there as winner of best pop rock song and best pop rock music video for their song “Sing to me.” The music video will be released May 1 and their new album “Stories and Analogies” will be released this summer through Tate Music Group, whom Seven Story Fall just

recently signed with. Their music is available for purchase on iTunes and there are a few songs available for free on their Facebook.

Virus strikes China, Eastern Europe, and North America…in Resident Evil 6 Liz Whittemore Photo Editor The newest installment of Resident Evil 6 is, in a word, different. The C-Virus is introduced as a bio-terrorist weapon attacking areas of Eastern Europe, China and North America. Game play for RE6 is not restricted to a singular location as per past games. The game has four campaigns with different playable characters, including Resident Evil favorites Leon Kennedy and Chris Redfield, and has an intertwining storyline and different game play for each, making it near impossible to get bored. Three of the campaigns have the option of co-op, available online or offline. Kris Reynolds, an avid fan of Resident Evil, has played every Resident Evil game known to everything but a GameBoy. “I like that we’re sticking to the over-the-shoulder game play and improving the AI. I think the direction they’re heading with the game is fantastic,” said Reynolds.

RE6 features above-average graphics with attention to detail, more quick-reaction events, a fantastic storyline and quicker, stronger, more complex adversaries that are not restricted to the classic zombie ideal. Throughout the game you acquire skill points where you can upgrade your character, as compared to past games where you upgrade your

guns. You can customize your character through skills such as improving melee, faster reloading, more accurate shooting or increasing item drop when you kill enemies. By completing a campaign, Mercenary and Agent Hunt play is available in the extra content, but some content is available only to online play. GameStop users gave the game an average rating of 7.9

out of 10 online with their reviews. Fans of classic Resident Evil games, who liked the simplistic action and storyline of previous installments, will not find that in this game. The next installment of the Resident Evil outbreak comes out May 21, 2013.

G.I. No G.I. Joe: Retaliation Jon M. Chu 3/28/2013 110 min

Taylor McAllister Staff Writer

Back in the glory days of being eight, having the coolest toys made you a monarch

of the moment. In my circle of friends, G.I. Joes were among those coveted toys. So when G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra was released in 2009, my excitement was nearly tangible. It wasn’t the greatest movie, but I would recommend it for a dull Sunday evening. For G.I. Joe Retaliation, the latest movie installment of the Hasbro toy, I would not wish that upon anyone. After the last movie I predicted so much potential for the next installment. There was an abundance of material for the story to work with and it flopped; falling face first into a puddle of muddy water. This movie had good parts; ten minutes of it taking place at the very beginning. During a raid for nuclear weapons, the Joes are deceived and destroyed. Roadblock, played by Dwayne Johnson, finds himself as the leader of the three surviving G.I. Joe’s. Now there is a reveal that the president of the United States

really isn’t the president and there are a handful of awesome action scenes, but that’s the first ten minutes of the movie. The rest of the movie seemed to drag on as the Joe’s plan to save the world from the venom of Cobra. The storyline leading to an “unexpected” ending stagnates for periods and then rapidly accelerates only to stop again. With actors like Channing Tatum, Dwayne Johnson and Bruce Willis, who are actors well known for their successful films, a rather epic movie would be expected, not the abysmal motion picture showing at a theater near you. If the producers had spent less money on negotiating actor contracts and had more competent screenwriters, this could have turned into what my imagination had led me to hope for. The best part of this movie was leaving with a box of Nerds. 2/5 stars

Heroes of Injustice Taylor McAllister Staff Writer Superheroes are characters that stand upon a high moral ground, fighting for the helpless and combating injustice. What if the superheroes became the oppressors? To quote Harvey Dent from The Dark Knight, “You either die a hero or live long enough to see yourself become the villain”. That is exactly what happens in Warner Brothers’ newest game, Injustice: Gods Among Us. The most trusted superhero in the world, Superman, has done something terrible. He destroyed his hometown of Metropolis and killed his wife Lois Lane. Not truly by his choice but the tragedy occurred none the less. After murdering the person who forced Superman to do this, he announces a worldwide ceasefire of hostilities and declares Earth will be administered under one rule: Superman’s rule. You either follow Superman’s lead or

become one of those silenced. To combat Superman’s regime the surviving heroes must fight alongside former adversaries, such as the Green Arrow fighting shoulder to shoulder with Deathstroke, in hopes of sending this enemy of freedom to the grave. Injustice: Gods Among Us’ battle mechanics operate off a formula that has been used since Mortal Kombat. That is the use of combos to perform special and powerful attacks and side scroll movement backand-forth on the battlefield. Though a bit difficult to grasp for those inexperienced, the combat is generally flowing and as the potential to be quite competitive between players of equal skill. There are snags in the combo system, but these do not outweigh the enjoyment the combat offers. The fighting itself cannot sell this game as a good game, since an archaic and overused mechanic is used. What truly sets this game in the good

category is the story. The story spans from edge of your seat awesomeness to moments that just make you think, “Really? You put this in here just to be filler”. The overall story is epic in its ambitions, but only good in its telling.

It’s a good party game with friends and perhaps some online play here and there, but not worthy of being placed among the platinum hits of video games.
