H ll Hello, Spring has finally sprung and the weather is encouraging shoppers to use their local High Street. Plans are afoot for the Town Centre Partnership to stage the 2014 Erdington Village Fete, which proved such a success last year with its blend of live music, street entertainment and stalls. All we need is the same weather we had last time! The re paving of the High Street at the Six Ways end is underway, and we hope that it is not too inconvenient for you. The works will
continue ti until til the th last l t weekk in May. Following the completion of the pavement works, the town centre partnership, managers of the Erdington BID, will be concentrating on the ‘look’ of the town centre. New litter bins will be installed – and more of them – along with some extra help for Frank, our hard working street cleaner. Council cuts have meant that he now works a larger area to the High Street, and the idea is for the BID to bring in support.
the in IIn addition, dditi th planters l t i the town centre will soon contain new blooms for the summer, and the hanging baskets will return also. Along with a cleanup campaign in the town centre, plus the general message for everyone to do their bit to keep the place tidy, it is hoped that the High Street will be a more pleasant place for shoppers and visitors. Look out for our Easter bunnies in the town centre on Easter Saturday – April 19. Happy shopping, Terry.

Town Centre Business connects with local school for Easter

An estate agency in Erdington is linking up with a local school to offer prizes in an Easter art competition. Ammo Jutley of Just Move estate agents in York Road agreed to judge artwork from pupils at Osborne J&I School in Station Road. The judging took place at the school on April 11, and Ammo agreed to display the winners in his shop front window. Ammo told us: “I believe that all businesses, large and small should engage with their local
schools - it’s where the next generation of professional is coming from”! “My whole family have a teaching background, and I see the link between business and education as important in the development of children’s knowledge”. The artwork can be viewed at Just Move’s offices from Easter for two weeks. Erdington Hall Erdington Hall was built in the mid 1600s and was the manor house for Erdington until its demolition in 1912 to make way for the construction of the Tyburn Road. The prominent owners of the Hall included the Jennens family who lived there until the eighteenth century, Sir Lister Holte and William Wheelwright, who is believed to have given his name to Wheelwright Road. Erdington was very much a rural area until recent times. In the mid eighteenth century it had a population of under 700 and consisted of 40
farms, 96 cottages, 2 smithies and a shop. The arrival of the canals at the end of the century encouraged some industrial development but the nineteenth century introduction of the railways was the spur to Erdington's suburban growth, seeing the population increase to 9,262 by 1891. The de Erdington family lived at Erdington Hall near the Bromford crossing of the River Tame, some way from the village of Erdington. Erdington Hall was a fortified and unusually double-moated manor-house which stood on the left bank of the river above Bromford Bridge. There was a double-moat on three sides with the River Tame running to the rear. In the 13th and 14th centuries there was a private chapel here, the remains of which could still be seen in the 17th century in the ruined timber-framed house.
In 1650 a new brick mansion with dutch gables was built by the wealthy ironmaster, John Jennens. Built in fashionable brick close to the original site, the new hall had three storeys and Dutch gables. The Jennens family occupied the hall until the 18th century. By 1858 the house had lost its former status and was occupied by farmer, William Wheelwright who cut Wheelwright Road for access to Gravelly Hill. Although still occupied as a farm in 1908, the house was demolished by 1912, the site now lying beneath the Tyburn Road near Abbotts Road.
Celebrating the magic of maths on World Pi Day By Amardeep Shergill, Faculty Leader, Mathematics Anastastia Ivanova
Staff and students at Kingsbury School and Sports College celebrated ‘World Pi Day’ on 14th March.* Students joined countless others around the world in learning about circles, Archimedes, the never-ending decimal number, and generally exploring, experimenting and testing out Pi – the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter, or approximately 3.14159 in numerical terms.
Kingsbury’s maths teachers infiltrated all areas of the school and students could be found singing Pi, competing to recite Pi and rapping Pi. There were discussions about the Egyptians’ estimate vs the Greek discovery of Pi. There was even a school-wide competition to see who could memorise the most digits of Pi. This was won by Year 8 student Anastasia Ivanova, who managed to recite an astounding 63 digits. When asked her secret, the 12 year old said: “I just try to remember five digits at a time. I could have memorised more than 63, but I only started three days ago.” The Maths Faculty at Kingsbury would like to offer big congratulations to Anastasia. Kingsbury School and Sports College Headteacher Catherine O’Driscoll said: “Within the day-to-day challenge to ensure our students’ progress
improves, at Kingsbury we want to make sure young people learn about the beauty and magic of maths, and to become enthusiastic and confident mathematicians. Pi Day was a great success; it stimulated students’ interest, encouraged them to look at maths from a different perspective and helped some to realise they can and will conquer the challenge of maths.” *Have you worked out why March 14th is Pi Day yet? Look at the numeric date and turn it into the international calendar date……..3/14.

Business News Shop closures in the West Midlands slowing Shop closures in the West Midlands are down year on year according to recent surveys which has shown that the number of stores that closed in this region last year was down markedly on 2012.
Multiple retailers in the West Midlands (shops with more than five outlets) closed 1.5 stores per day in 2013, down from 1.8 per day in 2012.
Overall store closures in the West Midlands fell from 662 in 2012 to 547 in 2013. Store closures in Birmingham remained flat year on year, but fell in Coventry, Wolverhampton and Worcester. Rob Hunt, deals partner at PwC, who conducted the survey, said: “The trend of net closures for 2013 is encouraging and signals a return in retail confidence. “The well-documented insolvencies of Jessops, HMV and Blockbuster, together with other solvent restructurings, account for most of the highlighted closures. “The recycling of shops from these estates, especially into convenience stores, has been the biggest positive trend in 2013. “The key to permanent growth for those multiples opening stores in the West Midlands is to ensure that their
locations are chosen carefully - where they do not compete with their existing stores or simply add to an already crowded environment for their particular offering. “We have seen this happen in recent years in several sectors, including ladies fashion and money lending, and it will be interesting see how the future numbers will be impacted by major localised projects, for example, the Grand Central Birmingham complex.” Photographic shops, women’s clothing and fashion shops, banks, video libraries, travel agents, mobile phone outlets, recruitment agencies and shoe shops were amongst the hardest hit in 2013. Charity shops, convenience stores, betting shops, cheque cashing and coffee shops bucked the trend by showing growth during the year
Travelodge Hotels recruiting 80 new apprentices to work in UK operation, including 19 hotels in Birmingham. JuMP recruitment starts this spring 2014, with key locations for recruitment including Birmingham. The firm said that with 19 hotels in the city, Birmingham was a vital location for the hotel chain which is why it was targeting the area for the new campaign.
The apprenticeship scheme, JuMP (Junior Management Programme), was launched in 2011 and is the UK’s first budget hotel management apprenticeship programme. IIt aims to provide A-level students with an alternative to going to university via a fast track route into management. During the two year programme, school leavers can continue their education, get work experience, receive a salary and potentially become a manager by the age of 21.

In March Millennium Point began bringing internationally significant conferences, debates, events and film screenings around the topic of Climate Change to Birmingham. Millennium Point is now in its second decade and has built its reputation as a hub for creative thinking around science, technology and learning. Beginning last month, the venue hosted activities which will evoke conversation around climate change, including the scientific breakthroughs happening to address the changing world. Climate Change Month comes at a significant time as the HORIZON 2020 programme for EU projects emerges, a planned budget of more than 1 billion euros over 6 years combining industry and EU funding to
take on the issues surrounding climate change. CEO of Millennium Point Philip Singleton said: ‘We think that it is vital that Birmingham becomes a part of the i n t e r n a t i o n a l conversation around climate change which is why we have brought together a month of creative thinking and activity in Millennium Point’s spectacular spaces, working with regional, national and international partners.’ Earlier in March delegates had the opportunity to discover the latest information on cities and business opportunities associated with low carbon buildings, energy and transport technologies.
The Erdington-based four, all participants on the Government's Work Programme, engaged with the Trust’s Get Started with Football initiative with support from PPDG. Liaising between the two organisations was Get Started programme manager Neil Parker, who has helped develop the on-going relationship over a number of years. Former Villa midfielder Ian Taylor conducted a Q&A with the young jobseekers after presenting certificates on the final day. “Football is an inspiring game, which is why I think schemes like those run by The Prince’s Trust are invaluable,” he said. “They can give young people focus at a time when many are struggling with their confidence and I wish these latest graduates all the very best of luck in their future careers.”

Claire Sheard (pictured) owns MS Fruits grocery store in Central Square with husband Mark. In time for Mother’s Day this year she upped the quantity of flowers and plants on offer and was overrun with demand. As Claire told us: “The run up to Mother’s day was very busy for us. We always do well with our flowers and plants, but this year we were extra busy - due probably to the spell of good weather at the time. We will though continue with our flowers to Easter and beyond for the rest of the year”.

Meet Thomas Janak who has recently set up a stall in Wilton M a r k e t offering p s y c h i c insight to help solve your problems. As Thomas told us: “I am certainly not your ordinary psychic medium as I combine mediumship with channeling spiritual animal guides to give advice and guidance to people (and animals). I am a master shaman (native American teachings) and Reiki master but also hold more “down to earth” qualifications such as being a holistic animal healer and pet psychologist.
“Because I ask spiritual guides to come through for my clients I wanted to have animal communication skills as well as having a sound knowledge of their lives on earth as well as the spiritual realm. “When people come to me for readings they will notice how direct, and often times empowering, spiritual animal guides are, whose aim it is to give guidance in order to make life easier. Call in to see Thomas (readings are only £10,- / 20 minutes) or can pre-book via 07907 289 370. High Street going digital Erdington town centre businesses have been given the opportunity to promote their businesses via phone apps. BID Manager Terry Guest explained: “We have been working with Bournville College who have European funding to help small businesses move into digital marketing. Using a phone app, each business taking part can send out marketing messages or offer to smart phone users. “The service is free for the first year with a small monthly charge thereafter if they take it up permanently. Free training is provided by the college. In addition to everything the BID does to promote Erdington town centre, this is another way to get our message across about the brilliant offers here”. There’s nothing more refreshing than a soothing cup of tea. But besides being a tasty, warming, pick-me-up, tea has lots of health benefits. From soothing a troubled tummy to easing insomnia and calming a troubled mind, teas have all sorts of healing powers. Drinking tea can also be a great source of vitamins and minerals. We asked health food store Holland & Barrett, in the High Street to give us some tips on the health benefits of various teas. Just a few of their huge range of teas are listed here:
Green Tea
Valerian Tea
Black tea vs green tea What is the difference between green and black tea? To begin with, nothing at all, both come from the same tea bush. It is how the tea leaf is then processed that creates the difference. After plucking and undergoing partial withering, green tea is heated almost immediately at about 200 c to prevent fermentation. The tea is then rolled to give it shape before being heated again. In contrast, black tea is processed in a different order: it is withered then rolled before any heating takes place. The tea is then left to ferment for some time when it takes on the brown/black colour and develops its flavour before being heated again to stop the process. Both types of tea contain high levels of antioxidants, and recent research has revealed that black tea, like green tea, delivers many health benefits.
Herbal Teas Herbal tea is made from many plants, using not just the leaves, but also the flowers, roots, bark and seeds. Herbal tea recipes blend the flavours of different botanicals from around the world – resulting in an infinite variety of taste sensations. Herbal teas naturally contain no caffeine.
Thiss soothing soo o thing tea is beneficial beneffic in helping to lower cholesterol, as well as supporting the immune function. It is anti-bacterial, diuretic (promotes the production of urine), and aids fat metabolism Nettle Tea
