Six to twelve year-olds talk about gays and lesbians is an award-winning professional development film produced by Welcoming Schools for elementary school staff and parents. The film features students from Massachusetts and Alabama discussing what they know about gay men and lesbians, what they hear at school, and what they’d like teachers to do.

The Safe Space Kit: Guide to Being an Ally to LGBT Students A Safe Space is a welcoming, supportive and safe environment for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) students. Available at http://lawrenceareagsa.files.wordpress.com/2011/03/safe-space-information.pdf GLSEN REPORTS: Gay, Lesbian, and Straight Education Network (www.glsen.org, Research, Reports) 1. 2011 Playground and Prejudice: Elementary School Climate in the United States The report examines findings from surveys of 1,065 elementary school students and 1,099 teachers; finds bias is common in elementary schools and teachers often lack preparation to address homophobia, LGBT families and gender non-conforming youth. 2. 2009 National School Climate Survey: Nearly 9 out of 10 LGBT Students Experience Harassment in School. The survey of 7,261 middle and high school students conducted during 2009 found that nearly 9 out of 10 LGBT students (84.6%) experienced harassment at school in the previous year. 3. Year 1 Evaluation of the Respect for All Training Program This report demonstrates the effectiveness of a district-wide educator training program (New York City Department of Education) on anti-LGBT bullying and harassment, and demonstrates how the competency of educators to address bias can be developed. 4. From Teasing to Torment: School Climate in America - A National Report on School Bullying Survey Illustrates Severity of Problem, and Identifies Frequent Targets of Verbal and Physical Harassment.


5. Harsh Realities Finds Transgender Youth Face Extreme Harassment in School This report documents the school experiences of 295 transgender middle and high school students and finds that these students face extremely high levels of victimization, even more so than their non-transgender lesbian, gay and bisexual peers. 6. Shared Differences: The Experiences of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Students of Color This report documents the experiences of over 2,000 lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) middle and high school students of color who were African American or Black, Latino/a, Asian or Pacific Islander, Native American and multiracial. 7. The Principal's Perspective: School Safety, Bullying and Harassment Survey reveals that K-12 principals underestimate the harassment LGBT students experience in schools. Although principals report their schools engage in anti-bullying/harassment efforts, most do not specifically address school safety for LGBT student HRC Foundation: 1. Growing Up LGBT in America: Key Findings HRC’s report, Growing Up LGBT in America, is a groundbreaking survey of more than 10,000 LGBT-identified youth ages 13-17. It provides a stark picture of the difficulties they face -- the impact on their well-being is profound, however these youth are quite resilient. They find safe havens among their peers, online and in their schools. They remain optimistic and believe things will get better. Nevertheless, the findings are a call to action for all adults who want ensure that young people can thrive.
