St. Paul’s Parent Council

February Houndstooth - Next meeting Thursday, March 17 • Lisa Beaverstock opened the meeting with the invocation. She gave

a testimonial on serving others which led into the combined meeting that focused on the Community Service Program at St. Paul’s. • Leslie Lerner, Community Service Director, presented a video created by St. Paul’s Service Leadership students about each of their projects and what the projects meant to them. The video was very touching and showed all in attendance how much our children learn when they serve others. Chris Lee from the J.L. Bedsole Foundation was present, and Parent Council members, Leslie Lerner, and the administration thanked him for his role in St. Paul’s receiving the Bedsole Grant for our Community Service Program. LOWER SCHOOL MEETING Lower School Director Anne Davis’ Report: • Mrs. Davis discussed the wonderful philanthropic work the Lower School does from collecting canned goods at Thanksgiving to donating books. She is very proud of how St. Paul’s begins service work in the Lower School. • 3rd/4th Grades are “going green” by planting a garden. The seeds have been planted and they are working on maintaining the garden. The students will harvest the garden and give it to the cafeteria for them to prepare for lunch. • 2nd Grade is going on a science adventure. They will be going to the “Super Scientific Circus” at the Saenger Theater at the end of the month. • 1st Grade was selected for a party on March 2 to celebrate Dr. Seuss’ Birthday. • PreK – 2nd Grades participated in “Read Across America” on March 2. • Kindergarten Classes are taking field trips to visit the bugs at the Exploreum. • PreK shared doughnuts with their Daddies and will be preparing for the Mothers’ Day Tea. Lower School Chair Cindy McFadden’s Report: • Cindy McFadden thanked all of the Kindergarten room moms for a fantastic Grandparent’s Day event. • She reminded the Parent Council members to turn in their receipts and to remain in touch with their teachers over upcoming events. • She asked the Council to refer to the agenda for upcoming Teacher Birthdays. • She then discussed Teacher Appreciation Week. There will be two separate events: Lower School campus will celebrate April 4 - 8 and the Dogwood Campus will celebrate April 11 - 16. Volunteers will be needed. The biggest need will be for parents to volunteer to make casseroles for teachers to take home. It is expected that each room mom will take care of her teacher. More to come on Teacher Appreciation Week at the March meeting. • She reported a very successful book fair for the Dogwood Campus with a profit of over $4,200 and thanked the Co-Chair Melanie Rowan and the Treasurer/Cashier Alicia Howes on behalf of Book Fair Chair Ashley Brown.

Saints’ Night Out: SPS Artwalk Chair Kim Klyce’s Report: • Kim thanked the Parent Council for their help with collecting donations for the Grade Level Baskets. She reminded everyone to donate to the event in some way and to please attend. Saints’ Night Out Chairmen Kim Klyce • Cindy McFadden (right) and Carol Erickson (left) are discussed the need pictured in the Upper School Art Gallery for the room moms to call their parents in order to solicit donations for Saints’ Night Out. Each room mom will receive a list from the grade level reps with the names of the families that have already donated so that they are not contacted again. Calls should be made as soon as possible. Cindy mentioned that the average donation is around $25. The donations may be sent in through their child’s backpack or may be sent directly to the School. • The SNO decorations committee needs help from all parents. They held work parties on Tuesday, February 22 and Thursday, February 24. More work parties will be planned. They intend to have a final work party at True Restaurant with beverages and refreshments, but they ask that the parent volunteer come to at least two work parties prior to this event to be invited. The SNO decorations committee passed a sheet for sign up to the council members.

A Spotlight on the Libraries at St. Paul’s

There are many parent volunteer opportunities on campus including the recent addition of our Library Volunteers. We are fortunate to have three sophisticated libraries (Lower, Middle, and Upper) with wonderful librarians and/or media specialists in each division. The program at each library is designed to support the curriculum, teach information literacy, encourage pleasure reading, and add enrichment to the educational experience. Collections offer a mix of print materials, such as books and magazines, and a variety of electronic and online resources. Throughout the course of the year parents have volunteered their time to log in new magazines, replace last editions with new ones, and help the librarians reshelve returned books. The following parents have been familiar faces on campus, and the administration, faculty and staff (especially the librarians) thank them for their time: Rebecca Castillo, Elizabeth Harrison, Shari Parker, Kelsey Russell, Susan Pickard, Shelly Scott, Ann Mitchell, and Katie Courtney. Students can now search all three libraries through the In addition, our librarians/media specialists have recently upgraded our Library Online Catalog Link on the SPS website. Information System to a new web-based program called Booksystems Atriuum. According to Upper School Media Specialist Lisa Knezha the new system is online, integrates our students and our library holdings into one system and works seamlessly with Windows 7 as well as XP. Students and parents can now search the holdings of all libraries with one search at the “SPS Online Catalog” link from the 6-12 library webpage, or directly at:http://stpaulsmobile.booksys.net/opac/stpes/ Reviews of books by School Library Journal and information about Accelerated Reader status are now available when looking at an individual title. When fully operational, students and faculty will be able to rate books with a star system and comment on the books they have read. At present, through the “Visual Search” option, a “What’s Hot” button shows viewers what has been checked out recently, as a way of seeing what other students are interested in. Mrs. Knezha said they are excited to implement this new system!
