The Epistle II A Newsletter for St. Paul’s Alumni

Summer 2011

From the Headmaster

This Summer issue of the Epistle II is dedicated in loving memory of Robert H. Rutledge “Coach Bob”

Dear St. Paul’s Alumni, I hope this edition of the Epistle II finds you well. We are winding up another fantastic academic year, and we are very proud of the latest additions to your ranks – the Class of 2011. They have left their mark on your School, and we are very, very proud of them. We are excited about next year, and look forward to great things from the Class of 2012. With all of the wonderful things that happen at St. Paul’s comes an opportunity to reflect on the impact that Bob Rutledge had on all of us. “Coach Bob” was, and will always be, the heart of our School. To walk the campus is to see his imprint everywhere. His legacy, though, is not in the physical plant that he helped build. It is more in the ideas, the spirit, and the family that is St. Paul’s. The lesson that we take from knowing him is the importance of kindness and compassion. We all have stories of how Bob helped us, or a family member, or a friend. He had a way of letting us know that we mattered to him, and the only way to repay him was to treat someone else in the same manner. The outpouring of emotion and sentiment that came from our Alumni in the days leading up to Bob’s funeral was overwhelming and touching at the same time. It meant a great deal to the Rutledge family, and it meant a great deal to our community. It was, in essence, a tribute that Bob would have shied away from, but one that probably would mean more to him than anything – all the people that he touched wanting to have the opportunity to say “thank you.” The four pillars of a St. Paul’s education - academics, spirituality, the arts and athletics - all flourished under his tutelage, and that is a legacy worthy of great thanks and tremendous gratitude. Thank you for your continued support of St. Paul’s Episcopal School. Have a great summer, and, as always, I invite you to come and visit your School. Yours Truly,

Marty Lester, Headmaster

uring Meg McCrummen’s school days at St. Paul’s, it was known she would make an impact on our state and nation. Among her leadership roles were her active involvement in the SGA. She was Secretary her Junior year and President her Senior year. Most of the student body, faculty, administration, veterans, and guests can remember her patriotic speech at the Annual Veterans Day Assembly at E.E. Delaney Stadium. On November 17, 2005 Congressman Bonner entered Leading AllJo Schools in Meg’s speech into the U.S. CongresAlabama with sional Record. As a National Merit Finalist at St. Paul’s, Meg received a Presidential Scholarship to the University of Alabama where her academic achievements and leadership roles flourished. She quickly became involved in the SGA and served as a First Year St. Paul’the s Episcopal School Councilor, Secretary of the Senate, Executive Vice President, Campaign Athletic Department Manager for the Presidential Candidate, 161 and served as the Chief of Staff Dogwood Lane her Senior Year. Mobile, AL 36608-1398 A week before she was to receive her diploma from the Univer(251)hit461-2152 sity, tornadoes the state. Although students were asked to Sports Central onreturn thehome, Web some stayed to help. Along with several friends, Meg organized UA www.stpaulsmobile.net Greek Relief in the days following the storm. This student-run operation committed to cooking hot meals us-

ing the resources of fraternity and sorority houses until Red Cross, FEMA, and others could get organized. Over the course of eight days, UA Greek Relief delivered over 52,000 meals and many thousands of pounds of supplies. Fundraising efforts will continue through this fall, and the group has raised over $150,000 to date. When asked about the experience, she says, “We were spared much, and of us much is required.” Meg graduated Phi Beta Kappa with a 4.0 majoring in History and French and a special study in Arabic language. She has received many awards including the University’s highest honor, the Algernon Sydney Sullivan Award recognizing excellence of character and service to humanity. She is most proud of a service-learning course called Art to Life that she developed and instructed her senior year. The course provides art therapy for low-income Alzheimer’s patients in rural Alabama. The students preserve the participant’s life story (through a DVD or storybook) while promoting validating and person-centered caregiving. As part of an economic development project with the University Fellows Experience, Meg spent several weeks in Alabama’s Black Belt recording and producing ghost stories. She fondly remembers a long afternoon conversation with Kathryn Tucker Windham. Meg recalls, “She told us her famous ghost stories, but more than that, she communicated the importance of storytelling as a powerful connection between people and as an expression of love. When she speaks, her soul shines.” Meg is leaving the states for France this fall as she will be teaching English to French students in the Loire Valley. Sponsored by the French Embassy, this competitive program will allow her seven months

to learn the region and improve her French. As Meg delivered these words to more than a thousand people over seven years ago at the Veterans Day Assembly, “For the love of their country, people from all over America have come to the Gulf Coast to help clean up the mess left from hurricanes; for the love of their country, individuals support candidates whom they believe will lead America well. Patriotism goes far beyond wearing red, white and blue on the Fourth of July; it is a very personal response of gratitude to America,” there is no doubt that Meg will continue her leadership as she embarks on a new chapter of her life.

B’ham On-the-Road Reunion

Wow, what a reunion! The Jackson Bar and Bistro in downtown Homewood was the place to be on April 7th this year. A record attendance of over 70 Alumni attended the party and unlike past years, stayed for most By Victor Helmsing of the evening. All four decades of SAINTS were represented with the largest group from the 1990s. I loved moving around the room visiting clusters of classmates and hearing about the way former students were successfully meeting the challenges of adult life. I also enjoyed hearing the Alumni reminiscing events that never occurred in my class. We hope for an even bigger group in 2013 and will solicit your assistance with a location. After the party Lou Courie, Wanda Sigler, Anna Moore and I had dinner at Dyron’s Lowcountry, whose chef is Randall Baldwin ’94. Randall is quite talented and we all agree that the meal was one of our best ever. It was a great way to top off a great night to be a SAINT.
