One St. Paul’s... OUR MISSION St. Paul's Episcopal School in Mobile, Alabama is committed to providing the highest quality college preparatory education in a Christian environment. Through a variety of experiences and activities, we encourage individual growth and achievement. By example, the St. Paul's community fosters respect, integrity, responsibility, service, tolerance, and the highest moral standards to prepare the whole person for a changing and challenging future. OUR BRAND You can know everything in the world, but if you don’t know what matters, then nothing does. At St. Paul’s Episcopal School, we know what matters. Our academic program is outstanding. Just as important, though, are the values we teach: character, scholarship, creativity, and above all, love. Saints know what matters. OUR PRAYER Heavenly Father, help us in St. Paul’s School to live together in love and peace, patient with each other’s faults, mindful of each other’s needs, gentle in words and helpful in deeds. And may this school be as a field which Thou hast blessed so that all that is true, pure, lovely, and of good report may grow here, filling our hearts with joy, and our hands with usefulness, through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.

FROM THE HEADMASTER

Dear St. Paul’s Family, Fall at St. Paul’s is my favorite time of year. Our campus is very busy, but the excitement generated by what our students and faculty are doing seems to transform our campus community every year. Homecoming carnival, alumni events, athletic contests, art shows, theatrical and musical performances, innovative teaching and learning – the list goes on and on and seems to grow longer with each passing year. There is one day, however, that is extraordinarily special at St. Paul’s. On Veteran’s Day, we are in school to honor local veterans and help our students understand the significant sacrifices made for them by these very brave men and women. The ceremony conducted on our campus, with our entire student body, is always moving and made more meaningful because our students are responsible for it. It is quite remarkable to see our students not just participate, but appreciate the significance of the day. There was one thing different this year – the

8th grade class was in Washington, D.C. on Veteran’s Day. I had the privilege of being one of the chaperones. Our first stop was at the Vietnam Memorial. As a component of a research project for their history classes, it has become a middle school tradition for students to do rubbings of the names of soldiers, sailors, and marines who died during the war. The city was very crowded as you might expect, and there were many events going on at the different memorials. Throughout our time there, veterans, family members, docents and volunteers complimented our students on their behavior and the reverence and respect they exhibited for the place and the time. There are moments every day in the life of our school that cause me to pause and reflect on the things that happen here, moments that truly make a difference in the lives of our students and the people they come in contact with. That day in Washington, at the Memorial, produced dozens of moments, but one in particular will stay with me forever. One of our 8th graders was preparing to do the rubbing on the wall when he realized that a ceremony was about to be performed

at that exact spot. He very quietly stepped back, removed his hat, and participated in the service. After it was over, he helped clean up the area. Only then, after all the participants left, he took the rubbing of the name of the fallen soldier from the wall and rejoined our group. Another chaperone, a veteran, and I witnessed the whole sequence of events and we thanked the student for what he did. To him, it was what you were supposed to do. To us, it was a touching, beautiful moment that we will cherish. St. Paul’s Episcopal School is a special place, and will always be one. We thank you for your support and commitment to the education of our children.

ach year, the Congressional Institute sponsors a nationwide high school visual art competition to recognize and encourage artistic talent in the nation and in each congressional district. Since the Artistic Discovery competition began in 1982, more than 650,000 high school students have participated.

Students submit entries to their representative’s office, and panels of district artists select the winning entries. This year, out of 133 entries in the First Congressional District Art Competition, St. Paul’s Episcopal School had three winners. Siobhan Johnson won First Place for her mixed media encaustic entitled “Brotherhood’s Past.” Johnson’s work will be displayed for a full year in the corridor that connects the United States Capitol to the U.S. House of Representatives. She was invited to Washington D.C. in June for a special awards ceremony. Grace Jeon received Second Place for her Scratchboard entitled “With my Sister.” Anna Alford received Honorable Mention for her Acrylic Painting on Tar Paper entitled ”Sunset on the Canal.”

Character

If you think character is more important than charisma, you might just be a Saint. At St. Paul’s, it’s what’s on the inside that counts. Sure, we’ve graduated our fair share of National Merit Scholars and major-league athletes, but we’re more proud of what’s harder to measure: character. Every week, you’ll find our students out in their communities, distributing food, volunteering at shelters, and just in general lending a hand – wherever one is needed. And on campus? Treating one another with tolerance, compassion, and respect. If you’d like to learn more about St. Paul’s, give us a call. Or, better yet, or come by for a visit.

GIVING

The Brittany Huber Scholarship

I

n the Spring of 2014, we lost a beloved member of the St. Paul’s family, Brittany Huber, Class of 2008. Brittany was an exceptional young woman whose sweet smile, courage, compassion and talent touched everyone with whom she came in contact. It is not possible to make sense of the tragedy. What matters is that she made all of us better for knowing her. A memorial scholarship fund has been established in Brittany’s memory. The Art Club and 3D Design class have created these beautiful fingerprint “Make Your Mark” necklaces, and the proceeds will benefit the Brittany Huber Memorial Scholarship. The necklaces are $15 and are available for purchase in The Campus Store. If you would like to make a gift to the Brittany Huber Memorial Scholarship Fund, please visit our website at www.stpaulsmobile.net or contact the Development Office at 251.380.0408. ALUMNI Spotlight

Interviewed by Lou Courie Upper School English Teacher

S

ometimes a friendly conversation brings such a smile that it lasts several days. Such was the result of my recent chat/interview with Brent Johnson, class of 2001. I already knew something about him: affable character, hard worker, goal-oriented. I knew he earned a football scholarship and played for the University of Louisville. I did not know, however, that he had been an honors student all four of his college years. I also didn’t know what a multi-tasker he had been in high school and in later life as well. He told me his inspiring story of the challenges he faced—with no sense of regret, I must say—while a student at St. Paul’s. Apparently, besides his rigorous studies and football practice, he would go home at night, do his assigned chores, and then, when his grandfather came home, they would go to St. Ignatius school and carry out their maintenance duties together. No wonder he has become successful!

Currently, Brent is, according to his resume (He would never boast on the phone.) a top-rated global rep for the industry giant, Google. He is married, has a young daughter, and lives in a Detroit suburb. After seeing his impressive resume, I was compelled to ask him how this kid from Mobile had become so successful in so short a time. His response: being disciplined, being grateful and “having fun along the way.” He was eager to share his gratitude to his family and to St. Paul’s for preparing him for college life and beyond. In addition, since he often gives presentations to targeted groups, he has used his speech training learned in those demanding Patricia Marsh classes to further his career. Apparently it was his public speaking polish which took him from the Gannett Corporation (USA Today and other publications) where he worked in digital advertising to Google. How he made his way to Google is interesting. He tells of giving a presentation promoting a magazine

for parents which he had helped to create. In the audience, apparently, was an impressed Google rep (a headhunter, perhaps?) who was keenly interested in Brent’s potential benefit to Google. A job offer and acceptance soon followed. The desired benefit to Google is realized annually, as he has generated millions for Google’s North American team. Today, he says he travels extensively, often from coast to coast, and yet finds time for family and leisure travel. His wife, Patrice, whom he met in college (That’s a great story, for another time.) enjoys California, especially Napa Valley. When they can, they come to Mobile, as his family still lives here. Our conversation was certainly enjoyable for me, but Brent seemed flattered by the call. It occurred to me later that he would, of course, react that way, as he is, in spite of his corporate importance, still the modest Brent Johnson that I knew.

LESSONS FROM LUTZI

ike Lutzenkirchen, father of former Auburn football player Philip Lutzenkirchen, spoke to students in grades 7 through 12 on Tuesday, September 1.

Philip Lutzenkirchen was killed in a single-car accident outside of LaGrange, GA in the early morning hours on June 29, 2014. Lutzenkirchen, 23, was a passenger in the back seat of the vehicle, but he was not wearing a seatbelt. Philip’s blood-alcohol level was .377 the night of the accident. Since his son’s death, Mike has traveled around the Southeast to over 100 schools, churches, and other organizations speaking about his son, offering a father’s advice, and spreading the word of the Lutzie 43 Foundation dedicated to mentoring young people. Mike is the Executive Director of The Lutzie 43 Foundation which was established in loving memory of Philip Lutzenkirchen shortly after his death in 2014. The objective of the Foundation is to pass on Philip’s remarkable characteristics in terms of community service, leadership, and service to others. The Foundation’s motto for young students and athletes is to “Live like Lutz, Love like Lutz, and Learn from Lutz,” reflecting their desire to help others live out the positive

character attributes that Philip displayed, while learning from the circumstances that led to his death. The Lutzie 43 Foundation aims to develop the character of young people and their influencers by focusing on leadership, charity, compassion, mentorship, hard work, honesty and faith through education and real world application. They are involved in a variety of initiatives targeting the education of young people on character development issues, as well as special projects and events consistent with Philip’s focus on giving back to the communities where he lived. This speaking engagement was made possible by the Saucier Family. In 1993, Dr. Scott Saucier and Ms. Rita Saucier lost their son, Chad Saucier, in a hazing incident at Auburn University where he died from acute alcohol poisoning. In an attempt to try to prevent this from happening to another child and another family, the Sauciers established a scholarship at St. Paul’s Episcopal School in memory of Chad. The Chad Saucier Memorial Scholarship is presented annually to a rising senior who models respect, integrity, responsibility, service, tolerance and the highest moral standards. The recipient must exemplify and promote the alcohol free and drug free policies of the school.

St. Paul’s Episcopal School

parent council

P

arent Council is off to a great start this year! We have a new logo, new liaison, and new energy to support our children and teachers to make this year one of the best. Our parent volunteers support the mission of St. Paul’s Episcopal School by volunteering their time and talents, ultimately enhancing our students’ experience at St. Paul’s. Parent Council includes every parent at St. Paul’s. Every small act matters, whether it’s dropping off doughnuts to celebrate the quarterly Headmaster’s List or setting up for Saints’ Night Out. There are many ways to get involved. Some of the opportunities include working Book Fairs, assisting in the Campus Store, decorating with our Campus Beautification committee, Homecoming Carnival, Teacher Appreciation events, Used Uniform and Book Sales, and much more! These activities range from PreK to 12th Grade, during school hours and after.

This fall, parent volunteers built four new picnic tables for our PreK-2nd Grade students. A big “thank you” to all who made this possible. The children love being outside, enjoying lunch and fun activities on their new tables! With Lower School “Snack Break” money, generous donations, and wonderful volunteers, we hope to continue enhancing our school with projects such as these. We have started a new monthly email of volunteer opportunities to make it easy for parents to volunteer when it fits best in their schedule. Our next Parent Forum, which is open to everyone, will be January 14th at 8:00 am in the Monte L. Moorer Theatre. Grades PreK – 4 parents meet monthly. An endowment fund is created when a donation is given to St. Paul’s Episcopal School Foundation to serve as a perpetual legacy that can honor or memorialize an individual loved one or an entire family. The endowment fund remains intact in perpetuity, while its earnings support a purpose chosen by the donor. Although naming opportunities begin at $10,000, gifts of any amount are welcome. Donors may direct their gifts to an existing fund or to the school’s general endowment fund.

The Accumulation Fund established by the Foundation by-laws, holds designated funds until they reach naming status. The Peggy Ellis Memorial Scholarship was started by Margaret Boland Ellis in memory of her daughter Margaret “Peggy” Ellis Campbell ‘78. Peggy was a member of the first cross country and track teams that won St. Paul’s first state championship in 1976. When this fund is endowed it will benefit a deserving student who is an asset to the St. Paul’s cross country and track teams. Alumni Scholarship Fund provides general financial support to assist in the education of a deserving and qualified child of an alumnus who would not otherwise be able to attend St. Paul’s. The Paula Harrison Armstrong Endowed Community Service Scholarship Award was established by Paula’s family following her unexpected death in 2014. This memorial scholarship award recognizes students who share her commitment to serving their community for the greater good of all. Paula, an alumna of St. Paul’s class of 1985, was committed to serving the community as was exemplified by her unending philanthropic work. The Paula Harrison Armstrong Community Service Scholarship Award will serve as a tribute to Paula while inspiring students to pursue a lifelong commitment to serving others. This annual scholarship award will be given to a rising senior student who exemplifies the characteristics of serving others through his or her participation in the St. Paul’s Community Service program. The Paula Harrison Armstrong Community Service Scholarship Award was awarded to rising senior Nadarria Inge. Dawson Faculty Excellence Fund was established by Catherine and Dudley Dawson to provide an annual monetary stipend to a deserving faculty member in recognition of teaching excellence. This year the Dawson Award recipient was Marianne Newberry. Faculty Development Fund, when endowed, will provide stipends and financial assistance for the continuing education and development of the School’s faculty members. Kaleigh and Madison Floore Endowed Scholarship Award was established in 2013 by Mr. Robert L. Floore, Jr., who took advantage of his company’s encouragement for their employees to contribute to philanthropic causes by matching employee gifts made to nonprofit organizations. Mr. Floore chose to create an endowed scholarship for future St. Paul’s students and named it in honor of his two daughters, Kaleigh ‘09 and Madison ‘12 who graduated from St. Paul’s Episcopal School. This award will be given to a female student who has proven academic success from sophomore or junior year with preference given to a student who participates in athletic activities. Frank Winter Hardie Memorial Award Fund was established by the Hardie Family in memory of Frank Winter Hardie ’98 who died in December 2007 at age 28 of a rare incurable cancer. Frank’s family has chosen to remember him with an annual award to be given to an upper or middle school teacher, coach or staff member whose contributions have inspired ordinary students and athletes to be outstanding people. This endowed award is intended to supplement the recipient’s salary. This year the Frank Winter Hardie Memorial Award was given to middle school teacher, Daniel Drum. The Helmsing Endowed Scholarship Fund was originally established by a gift to St. Paul’s Episcopal School that Mr. Frederick G. Helmsing included in his will and then enhanced by friends and family who contributed to the fund in his memory. The Fund will provide financial assistance to a student entering his or her senior year of high school and who exhibits good character, including a possession of a solid level of respect from his or her peers, and who exhibits average academic performance and average or above average participation in extracurricular efforts. Brittany Huber Memorial Scholarship Fund was established to honor the life of the 2008 alumna. This scholarship will benefit St. Paul’s students. Robert G. Kendall Scholarship Fund was established in memory of Judge Robert G. Kendall to provide financial assistance to qualified students, with special consideration to minority students. This award is given to students who possess the requisite skills, aptitude, abilities and desire to succeed in the course of study they are pursuing at St. Paul’s Episcopal School, and meet the financial assistance requirements. The Leslie Lerner Community Service Fund was started by St. Paul’s Board of Trustees in honor of Mrs. Leslie Lerner’s successful Community Service Program and its six month build of the Habitat for Humanity House in 2010. The fund’s earnings support the School’s Community Service Program. John McGehee Memorial Fund was established by Dottie McGehee and her family in memory of Dr. John McGehee. The Fund will provide financial assistance to a qualified and deserving student. The Max Emery Miller and Marguerite Galloway Miller Scholarship Fund was established, through the generosity of the John W. Laidlaw Foundation and the Miller family. A scholarship fund was created in memory of Max Miller, a long-time friend and supporter of the School. Mr. Miller served on the Board of Trustees for over 25 years and during that time set an example of a true leader and philanthropist for education. In January 2010, Marguerite Galloway Miller’s children elected to honor their mother by adding her name to the scholarship and directing memorial contributions there. The purpose of the Fund is to provide, on an annual basis, one or more scholarship(s) for deserving students who will benefit from the St. Paul’s experience, and contribute to St. Paul’s through academics, extra-curricular activities, leadership, and citizenship, and who meet St. Paul’s criteria for eligibility for financial aid. Alex Parkman Memorial Fund was established by Carlos and Harold Parkman in 1990 in memory of their son, Alex Parkman, Class of 1988. A scholarship is given annually to a rising senior who exhibits the qualities of respect, integrity, responsibility, service, tolerance, and the highest moral standards, who has a strong belief in and promotes the alcohol free and drug free policies of the School, and who is considered a role model by his peers and by the faculty and administration of the School. Why give? Tuition does not cover all of the costs to educate students at independent schools such as St. Paul’s. Your taxdeductible gift to Saints’ Fund helps provide the additional funds necessary to provide the extraordinary educational experience we expect our students to receive. Your child benefits daily from each annual gift to the school. How much should I give? Every gift matters and is appreciated. Your gift, no matter the size, will provide additional resources and serves as a stimulus to inspire other gifts from parents, alumni and foundations.

How can my gift impact my child? Some improvements this year include:

New equipment for the Middle & Upper School science labs

Additional equipment for PreK - 2nd grade classrooms

Drivers Education Certification

Addition of a school nurse

Additional professional development opportunities for faculty and administration

New external lighting and new roofs

New computers in the 3rd & 4th grade computer lab

Academic additions to our 3rd and 4th grade curriculum

Expansion of faculty for languages, community service and athletics

Our goal this year is not only to exceed $400,000, but to increase our participation with more parents, grandparents and alumni giving. Our faculty and board of trustees have reached 100% participation. Please join them and support what matters. How do I give? Go online to stpaulsmobile.net/saintsfund or mail a check to the Development Office at 161 Dogwood Lane, Mobile, AL 36608.
