NORAH LAWLOR Spring showers, as they say, bring Spring flowers - a harbinger of good things to come. Thus it is with our fabulous new-look cover, shot on location at the Goodwood Estate. The cover is followed by pages full of wonderful articles, photography and news to help you in your pursuit of an Epicurean Life. The recession seems to have had little effect in London as new restaurants and chefs continue to view our Capital as at the vanguard of the culinary scene. As we become ever savvier with haute-cuisine, chefs have had to raise their game to meet our growing expectations. Simple flavours that allow the natural taste of the food to shine and local sourcing are now par for the course. Thus, many restaurants now offer chef’s tables and tasting menus that showcase the depth of their talents and we review BO London and others who specialise in just that. My very high expectations of the fashion shoots are always exceeded by the extremely talented Elaine and Darren, both of whom eclipse their previous work with every issue we publish. Norah continues to have her pulse on the NY foodie scene, while Margaret lives the life of a Bon Vivant in Paris and imparts enviable knowledge. Azzy was in Geneva admiring watches and motorcars. Farzana and Annabel both enjoyed a taste of Russia - Farzana with a Festival in London and Annabel in St Petersburg. Maryana opens up her very private Black Book and lets you into her ‘Secret World’ of shopping and services that London has to offer. My own high expectations, when I visited the Dolder Grand, were surpassed with meticulous Swiss service, a truly amazing art collection and one of the best Spas I have ever seen. As always, we hope you enjoy this issue and wish you all a truly Epicurean Life.

RHS CHELSEA

FLOWER SHOW Margaret Kemp joins in the Centenary celebrations

Royal Horticultural Society Chelsea Flower Show, the garden design equivalent of Paris Fashion Week, celebrates its centenary this year. The must-visit show kicks off the English summer season of Ascot, Wimbledon, Henley, Glyndebourne etc. Chelsea hosts the world's most famous flower show, visited annually by 157,000 gardening aficionados. Take a look inside.

Proud Pensioner

EPICUREANLIFE.CO.UK

From May 21-25th the grounds of Royal Hospital, home to the legendary red-coated Chelsea Pensioners, are transformed into incredible show gardens, inspirational small gardens and vibrant horticultural displays. Chelsea, with its' 500 exhibitors, is an important venue for spotting emerging gardening trends. New plants are launched and the popularity of older varieties revived, celebrity spot your favourite stars, Ringo Starr and Barbara Bach, Cliff Richard, Gwyneth Paltrow, Michael and Shakira Caine, the paps have a field day with the likes of Paul Smith, Richard Caring, Joan Collins, Roger Daltrey who told EL, “these gardens look as if they have been here for 60 years, bloomin' marvellous”. Boy Band JLS took flower arranging classes last year! “So romantic”, they enthused. It takes 800 people 33 days to build the show, sponsored by M & G Investments, from bare grass to the finished event. HM The Queen, The Duke of Edinburgh and members of the Royal Family traditionally get a private teatime tour the afternoon before opening day. Highlights this year include Prince Harry's “all about circles” garden, designed by Jinny Blom, created in homage to Princess Diana. In

partnership with Sentebale, a charity established by HRH, after he spent time working with vulnerable children in Lesotho, the B&Q Sentebale ‘Forget-me-Not’ Garden is a contemporary evocation of the landscape and culture of Lesotho. Ms Blom, who won a gold medal for her natural-looking Laurent-Perrier garden at the 2007 Chelsea show explained. “It's all about circles, in Lesotho they have circular hats, the houses and the hats both look like each other and they in turn look like the hills”. The show is glamorous, read, horticulture in high heels, but also the ultimate reference in gardening worldwide from the wild highlands of Papua New Guinea to pretty Pimlico window boxes. And, it's also an Epicurean experience, eating and meeting new best friends in the lush custom built marquees. Everything from 3-course gastronomy to sandwiches and fish & chips. Last year 5,567 glasses of champagne: 1,128 seafood platters: 12,120 sandwiches and 35,900 cups of tea were served. RDV in the Bandstand Area at the Laurent-Perrier Champagne tent, the Pimm’s tent and Village Fète food stalls selling scrumptious sandwiches, salads, hot carvery options, fresh pastries, cakes and cream teas with two coffee bars serving barista-made coffee, tea and chilled drinks. There's good news for Gnome lovers as, for this year only, after 100 years of ignominy, gnomes are invited onto the showground, the lucky mascots of gardeners have previously been smuggled in, now they're coming “gnome”.

Uniting the classic style of French and English gardens, The Laurent-Perrier Garden at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2013 is very much a contemporary take on a romantic garden created by award-winning Swedish garden designer Ulf Nordfjell. The garden acknowledges the heritage of the family-owned Champagne House whilst incorporating a modern elegance. The design is inspired by the work of two remarkable women: Nicole de Vésian’s famous garden La Louve in Provence, France and Ulla Molin’s private garden in Höganäs Sweden. The gardens echo the beauty of their surrounding landscapes by using simple

forms and pruned, soft shapes. Both Nicole and Ulla were renowned for modernising horticulture in their respective regions. Based in Stockholm, Ulf has previously created two gardens at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show, winning gold on both occasions as well as Best in Show in 2009. Laurent-Perrier champagne will be enjoyed across the show grounds throughout the week.

Bartholomew Landscaping

Multi award winning Bartholomew Landscaping, the London based landscape gardening company, is the lead sponsor chosen to create a garden for the RHS centenary Chelsea Flower Show in May 2013 for Stoke-on-Trent. The skeleton of a pottery bottle kiln representing the city’s heritage will feature in the garden, with a sunken seating area to the fore of the garden representing new contemporary living spaces currently being created in the city.

Water, surfacing and planting are used as a metaphor for the transforming, contemporary city. The colour palette for the planting will be dominated by apricots, soft oranges, coppers and bronze with contrast shades of burgundy, deep purple, lime green and cream. Ceramic flowers created by local school children will also feature. In 2012 the company won a record eight awards in the BALI National Landscaping Awards in recognition of its exemplary standards and professional expertise across a range of categories from private gardens to community and school projects. Transformation is the garden theme.

TOM-TOM to Canary Wharf

Tom Aikens Restaurant Group will open its third foodie brasserie - Tom’s Kitchen, Deli and Bar - this May in Canary Wharf. The original Tom’s Kitchen opened in Chelsea in November 2006 as an informal counterpart to his Michelin starred Tom Aikens restaurant. The 120-seat eatery features brasserie dining, from breakfast to dinner, in a relaxed and casual setting. In 2009, the award-winning chef partnered with Compass Group to launch a second location in Somerset House alongside the opening of Tom’s Deli and Tom’s Terrace. Tom comments, “We are keen to introduce Tom’s Kitchen with its trademark quality British comfort food, featuring the finest seasonal produce; to the thriving Canary Wharf community.”

Once upon a Time… One of this year’s most anticipated restaurant openings, Story, the debut restaurant from Tom Sellers on Tooley Street is now taking bookings for the months of April and May. The restaurant itself will open on 16th April, with only 42 covers available for both lunch and dinner. Tom’s creative cuisine – which features a choice between a six-course (£45) or ten-course (£65) menu – will include his

VIVA ESPANA VIVA AMETSA

Welcome to Ametsa with Arzak instruction, the much talked about new restaurant within the discreet and stunning Halkin Hotel. A genuine world of calm and serenity in the very heart of London! Ametsa with Azrak instruction.....is a restaurant like no other in London’s rather heavily saturated food scene! The mere fact that we have the involvement of chef Elena Azrak, voted Veuve Clicquot World’s Best Female chef in 2012, and as if that wasn’t enough - working alongside her is her father Juan Mari Azrak bringing with them nearly 100 years of stunning and evolving interpretations of “New Basque cuisine”. I haven’t been to Azrak in San Sebastian, which holds three Michelin-stars! I should imagine that Ametsa with Arzak instruction will be anything like it either, but one thing is for sure....the class, the pedigree, years of devotion is more than obvious on the menu here in London. The chef behind the stoves, running day to day operation is Sergio Sanz Blanco, freshly arrived from Madrid. First of all I need to say that Ametsa with Arzak instruction has taken over the space that was until very recently occupied and greatly enjoyed by many for nearly a decade, the delicious Nahm! The area is the same, but the interior design has been changed. I liked the calmness and serenity of the room...a dining room that has to be so for evening dining but it has to have a totally different feel for breakfast , as let’s not forget that this restaurant is within a small boutique hotel. I certainly didn’t feel that that the dining-room presented such a contradiction, I felt that London-based designers Ab Rogers Design had created a great feel for my dinner experience, always a

Silvena Rowe

challenge when creating restaurants within hotels! The menu reads as you would expect! Elegant, slightly obscure...I made my server work very hard as I asked for most dishes to be explained to me...Like Scallops with betacarotene, From egg to chicken, Unexpected sole....and there certainly was a lot of unexpected deliciousness that followed! Service was most agreeable, Ametsa with Arzak instruction has only been open for only 10 days, some of waiting staff have been brought in directly from Spain, which immediately adds such an authenticity and warmth to everything you are about to experience. I loved the food, I love it very much! I started with King Prawns with sweetcorn, completely what I wanted to taste! Sweet, delicate chunks of King Prawn, veiled with silky sauce, topped with crunchy vermicelli.... I also wanted to have, even if it was only because of its name, ‘From Egg to Chicken’ another dish on the starter list. This was delectable and delicious! An egg in a bowl with chicken crunchy bits around, with the waiter

pouring over as its served, the most umami of chicken bouillon! That was a serious flavor injection! By this point I was seriously hungry for more! I am greedy by nature and what I was having is making me more hungry. When I see foie gras on a menu I always have to have it! On the Ametsa with Arzak instruction menu it is offered unusually as a main, most restaurants like to prepare it as a starter, so I ordered it. I have to say it was best foie gras I have ever eaten...this was served with zesty grapefruit and sweet fig, the foie gras itself was prepared perfectly! This was my moment of ecstasy! I ate it slowly and stopped talking to my dinner companion who was equally savouring his main course of beef fillet with aged red wine. Ametsa with Arzak instruction, we were told, uses predominantly British ingredients but of course the foie gras was sourced from France. The Main Course list includes a few fish courses and more meat...I didn’t see any vegetarian optons but then again I wasn’t looking that hard.... Dessert or Postres as stated on the menu were interesting! I ordered the chocolate fondant with piquillo ice cream. My rule with chocolate fondant as with all classic dishes is that unless is prepared to perfection it’s not worth having! My fondant was slightly over cooked, the ice cream was screaming orange colour that of a piquillo pepper, kind of curious flavor! We also tried the clove custard which was much better! Eating out often and knowing the London food scene so well, partly due to my enormous greed and appetite and partly to being a chef, I truly appreciated the very different offering at Ametsa with Arzak instruction, even in only 10 days, there is a feel for an “experience” rather than just a meal on a table! The Ritz A Toast to Cava Aqua London has launched the ‘aqua nueva Cava Bar,’ offering guests an opportunity to explore one of the finest and largest selections of Cava in the city. Often referred to as the Spanish equivalent of Champagne, this sparkling wine is predominantly made from the region of Catalonia. Inspired by the rising trend of cosmopolitan style ‘aperitivo drinking’, aqua nueva hopes to educate guests on this commonly misunderstood sparkling wine by showcasing 15 award winning Cavas at their traditional tapas bar. To highlight the versatility of Cava, Head Chef Alberto Hernandez presents a bespoke daily changing tapas menu to be

enjoyed at the Cava Bar. Three tapas dishes for £18 include such delights as seafood tartar served with ajo blanco and grilled cuttlefish with ink sauce and alioli. Head Sommelier Zsolt Kismodi offers guests a chance to sample first class vintage Cavas and explore the history of the sparkling wine with monthly Castillo Perelada master classes. During the 1-hour class, guests will learn about the grapes used, the aging process and tips on how to distinguish the unique bouquets. The Rivoli Bar at The Ritz London is serving cocktails with a twist of time travel as it launches a unique collection of classics created with rare spirits from the 1940s to the 1980s - literally offering visitors to the bar the opportunity to taste a different time. The Vintage Cocktail menu offers a selection of seven classic cocktails – ‘Brooklyn’, ‘El Presidente’, ‘Negroni’, ‘Old Fashioned’, ‘Rob Roy’, Rusty Nail’ and a ‘Sazerac’. A trawl of the extensive cellars at The Ritz yielded a curious collection of beverages dating from the 1940s to the 1980s, and where key components of classic cocktails could not be obtained the bartenders sourced similarly senior spirits from specialist suppliers.

Located on the 10th floor of the uber-stylish new ME London and accessible via a dedicated express lift, Radio is the only rooftop bar, lounge & terrace in the Strand & Aldwych area to open throughout the day until 3am. Radio serves a Mediterranean-inspired menu for lunch and elegant nibbles to accompany your cocktails until the early hours. With breath-taking views of the City - most of London’s landmarks are in clear view: Tower Bridge, Shard, London Bridge, St. Paul’s Cathedral, Tate Modern, Somerset House, Southbank, London Eye, Houses of Parliament,

and the theatre district of Covent Garden. The rooftop bar has a wraparound terrace and a very private room on the terrace that can be booked in advance. Located in the former home of the BBC, Marconi House broke ground in 1922 by broadcasting the first regular programmes on British radiowaves; it is this heritage from where the name derives.

AFTERNOON TEA

A CAPITAL IDEA David is literally a Goliath in the hospitality industry - of course I mean David Levin. Since 1971 the man who created the 5 Star townhouse Capital Hotel has trained and managed more professionals who have gone on to shape the London culinary scene than most. Today the landmark Capital Hotel is still a family-run hotel and is managed by his daughter Kate. While its reputation as a culinary destination is well and truly cemented, people often overlook that it is also a delightful destination to escape for Afternoon Tea. This, of course, for the cognoscenti is not such a bad thing as we like to escape the madness of Knightsbridge and adjacent

Harrods and Harvey Nichols, into this cocoon of sumptuous luxury and impeccable service. Their Afternoon Tea served is daily in The Sitting Room between 2.30pm and 5.30pm. It is priced at £25.00 per person or with a glass of Champagne at £38.00 per person. It is as you would expect - a truly decadent treat of fresh handmade sandwiches, scones and fresh pastries. I can’t think of a more perfect way to enjoy a spoiling afternoon than in the multiaward winning hotel.

BIRD of Smithfield Set within a Georgian town house and operating over 5 floors, Bird of Smithfield is the long awaited venture from Chef Alan Bird – former executive chef at The Ivy (15 years), and Group Executive Chef at Soho House Group. The restaurant’s menu will boast modern British cuisine, incorporating many of Alan’s famed dishes such as his Shepherd’s Pie. Bird of Smithfield will offer a classically styled dining room - Harris Tweed and herringbone fabrics; a cosy lounge bar, private dining floor with chef’s table, roof terrace overlooking Smithfield market, and the intimate music venue - The Birdcage. The Birdcage will play host to live music sets on selected evenings. 26 Smithfield Street, EC1 www.birdofsmithfield.com

The Beagle

has Landed Beagle is a new restaurant set within three beautifully renovated railway arches on Geffrye Street, Shoreditch - next to Hoxton Station. Taking its name from one of the locomotives that used to operate on the old North London line overhead, Beagle houses a restaurant, bar and coffee shop. Brothers Danny and Kieran Clancy are behind the project with James Fergusson (Rochelle Canteen) directing the kitchen. Think honest, homely menu with the best of British produce - pig’s head croquette with gribiche, whole wild sea bass with samphire & cucumber, and custard tart with poached rhubarb. 397-400 Geffrye Street, London E2 www.beaglelondon.co.uk

Don’t Play with your Food Located in the heart of Victoria, St. James Theatre opened its doors in September 2012 with a performance of Sandi Toksvig’s Bully Boy. The first newly built theatre complex in central London for 30 years, this state-of-theart, multi-faceted offering provides guests with arguably the finest combination of culture and dining in the capital. Alongside a 312 seat theatre

presenting contemporary and classic productions and a 120 capacity studio theatre, the complex offers no three vibrant food and drink options. The main restaurant which is situated in an elegant dining room on the first floor, Carrara at St. James celebrates the best of British cuisine with an Italian twist.

Browns I can’t imagine anything more indulgent and satisfying than spending all day - without a care in the world - perusing all the glorious shops on Bond Street. From Christian Louboutin through to Louis Vuitton, Prada Armani, Gucci, Hublot and Tiffany this - assuming you had a matching bank account - is literally heaven on earth. But no matter how much I may love my lazy days of carefree shopping the only way to surpass it is to follow up with an even more indulging massage. Perfectly situated to address this whim is legendary Brown’s Hotel which lies a stone’s throw from Bond Street with entrances on both Dover and Albemarle streets. Check in your bags with the ever eager to please team and walk down to the spa for an unforgettable afternoon of oils, creams, and aromas. Within Rocco Forte Hotels’ Brown’s Hotel, The Spa is and oasis of tranquillity from which to escape in this very hectic part of town. The treatments on offer for ladies, gentlemen and even children can be tailor-made to suit their guests’ specific requirements. There are three private treatment rooms, including one room for two. Each treatment room has been specially designed to include its own shower together with a dedicated changing space, along with heated treatment beds in a temperature controlled environment. Decorated in soothing colours, with peaceful music and scented candles, The Spa really does offer the ideal setting in which to relax. From their selection of beauty products I chose to have a massage using Aromatherapy Associates products. The brand has over 30 years’ experience in producing the finest quality essential oils, blended to help balance the mind, body and spirit and boy did they work. I let my mind drift while my body was caressed and massaged and aches I didn’t know I had were soothed away. Most massages come in either 30, 60 or 90 minute options and are priced £60, £95 and £130 respectively. The only thing after you can do after a massage is either go home and take a welldeserved nap or as was my case, indulge further with a very spoiling facial treatment. Several are on offer and choices include facials that revitalise, cleanse, self-repair and encourages healthy skin metabolism. The team in the Spa is as dedicated and as professional as all the team at Browns Hotel and I can’t wait to go back. Hours - Monday to Sunday from 9.30am to 8pm T: 020 7518 4009 www.brownshotel.com

They are perhaps the sort of people who do not understand the quest for the ultimate in luxury and indulgence or perhaps they’re just too busy affixing some smug I-caremore-than-you stickers to their Prius’ to appreciate what the hotel is and offers. Oh well, there are always a few! Fortunately, for us, those people do not read or obviously understand an Epicurean Life. Our personal interpretation of Epicureanism is a showcase for the finest the world has to offer in all aspects of pursuing a more fulfilled life. The Bulgari Hotel certainly understands our ethos and it does so in spades. From its location at the very heart of Knightsbridge to the welcome of the doormen everything is meticulous. The highly stylised, elegant and contemporary hotel reflects the sophistication of the ultra-luxury Italian brand. We went to sample their much talked-about Sunday brunch and movie special. A relaxing jazz buffet-brunch followed by an optional movie viewing in their private cinema complete with popcorn and soda! The brunch is served in their main dining room with the bar featuring a smorgasbord of individual dishes that include: Bresaola, Sea Bass Carpaccio or Aubergine Caviar, Squid, finest Italian meats and cheeses, and much more. Of course there is a superb selection of homemade breads, croissants, and Danish pastries. To drink there are juices, smoothies and coffee galore. After your fill from the buffet

you can choose a hot dish as a main course from the a la carte menu that includes, inter alia, risotto, or pizzeta. I opted for the eggs Royale (eggs benedict with smoked salmon) and of course a glass of complimentary champagne. The brunch was delightful - I can’t think of a better way to spend a lazy Sunday afternoon than to sit and read newspapers while relaxing in such a beautiful environment. Service at the hotel is very welcoming and as slick as the décor. Post-brunch - and included in the price - you can retire to their 47-seat cinema to enjoy the pre-selected film shown on the big screen. 171 Knightsbridge, London SW7 T: 020 7151 1010

FUSION of Flavours Harps in the background and a spiritz of edible perfume of freshly baked pain d’epices – is quite literally a taste of things to come and lets you know this is not your standard cucumber sandwiches experience. Eric Lanlard, twice winner of the prestigious Continental Patissier of the Year at the British Baking Awards, showcases his talents with his very spectacular Fusion Tea at the Jumeirah Carlton Tower. The tea is inspired by his travels and the discovery of unusual and unexpected flavours and ingredients. Following on is a selection of lemongrass and ginger house-marinated salmon pumpernickel roulade; a roast beef,

watercress and creamed horseradish wrap; and an onion brioche with crispy Peking duck, spring onion. Each is a visual treat and has incredible flavours and a distinct departure from the usual fare on offer at other hotels. A selection of pastries, cakes and desserts that include a wild strawberry cone pop topped with strawberry cheesecake popcorn to dark chocolate cannelloni filled with tarte tatin mousse topped with pecan smoked mini apple, make this a truly memorable experience.

Baijiu The Chinese distilled alcoholic beverage, which literally means ‘white alcohol’ is 52% proof, so not one for the faint-hearted. At present there are only four top-distilled liquors in the world, namely French Brandy, Scotch Whiskey, Russian Vodka and Chinese Baijui. Baijiu is China’s most popular and traditional drink and has for thousands of years been regarded as a drink to mark celebrations and strengthen bonds. To appreciate the baijiu you are drinking, it is necessary to consider the colour, aroma and taste, these three senses will determine the ‘style’. Baijiu should be bright, shiny and clear with no suspended particles and it is best served at room temperature in small tasting cups.

Catch a Rising star at

The Westbury

The chef patron of the eponymous Alyn Williams at The Westbury is celebrating his amazing recent success. News that his Mayfair restaurant had received an AA Three Rosette Award, was followed by the award of a Michelin star, just 10 months after opening. Within a week the team were celebrating a 15th ranking – the third highest new entry – in the National Restaurant Awards. The icing on his cake - which he can probably bake better than most, was the title of National Chef of the Year 2012 from the Craft Guild of Chefs. alynwilliams@ westburymayfair.com

BO

knows the culinary arts

Anyone familiar with the 1980s American athlete will know Bo Jackson. He was not only one of the best players to ever play American Football, but quite unusually, he also played and excelled at baseball. The advertising men went nuts with ‘Bo knows football’, Bo knows baseball’ and just ‘Bo knows’ campaigns as his image became a national symbol of success. I am not sure if Bo ever tried his hand in the kitchens but… The façade of the building that houses Bo London on a quiet unassuming street off Conduit Street offers no indication of what is to follow. A small room of about 30 seats and an adjoining room with a prep area and a couple of more tables will not immediately have you thinking of Michelin. I also find it hard to get my head around ‘fine-dining’ when you have tables that are not dressed in crisp white linen. Here the table are bare and only adorned with silverware, a show plate and, of course, chop-sticks. I say, of course, because nominally Bo London is a modern Chinese restaurant - but like no modern Chinese restaurant I’ve ever been to. If Heston Blumenthal had been born in Beijing, Bo is what he would have created. There is no a la carte dinner menu at Bo London - only the choice of 12 or 14 course tasting menus priced at £98 and £138 respectively. We sampled the ‘Ode to Great Britain’ 12 course offering that promises such classics as: Bed and Breakfast, Toad in the Hole and Beans on Toast. What follows will - and is intended - to blow your mind of all reality. There is lots of smoke and mirrors, but don’t let the artistry fool you. Underneath the razzle dazzle are some serious culinary techniques on display using wonderful ingredients with full flavour and textures. Nothing tastes as it appears so both your mind and palate are continuously challenged. To accompany our dinner, the sommelier organised a wine pairing menu that showcased their extensive cellar range. I really loved BO, especially for the show. 4 Mill Street, London W1 T: 020 7493 3886 www.bolondonrestaurant.com

throughout the space. The old staircase designed by Philip Johnson and the old wall separating the top floor from the main floor have been removed, offering more dance floor space for partygoers. Josh Held – designer of W Hotels and Bar Americain – gave the club a raw, industrial makeover with recycled leather belts covering the walls and welded rebar for the handrails. A version of the light and sound system from the Marquee in Las Vegas has been added to the New

York location. The sounds of David Guetta, Ruckus, DJ Vice, Quintino, and other A-list DJs and musical acts can be heard pumping through Marquee’s new sound elements. This includes a Funktion-One sound system that is like no other in New York. A floorto-ceiling LED feature wall and computerized moving light system will give guests a full sensory nightclub experience. “The Library,” the name given to Marquee’s mezzanine level, features a custom back bar

O

ne of my favourite ways to spend a lazy afternoon is visiting some of London's many superb arts and culture hotspots – after all, this is what nourishes the soul! Whether antique furniture or books, quirky jewellery, or art and music, my favourite destinations tend to revolve around the visual arts and places that draw on the history of this great city. I also like to get away from it all, and places such as the Royal Horseguards Hotel provide me with little havens within our busy city to sit back for a while and enjoy the architecture, have a cup of tea and perhaps read one of the books I’ve picked up on my regular trips to the antiquarian.

Apter-Fredericks Apters and Fredericks have been acquiring some of the finest pieces of Eighteenth century English antique furniture since 1946. From Queen Anne to Regency, through the designs of Thomas Chippendale, George Hepplewhite, Robert Adam and Thomas Sheraton, spanning the period when English furniture design and craftsmanship was at its height. Apter-Fredericks believe it is essential that London continues to be at the heart of the Art Market and are a founding partner of The Masterpiece Fair taking place this year on 27th June - 3rd July 2013 (preview 26th June). Amanruya Mrs W enjoys

Peaceful Dream, Peaceful Haven Main Pool

Pool Cottage

Recommended room category: Seaview cottage (all cottages are the same size at 75 sqm, they only differ in views), from 900 Euros/night. Despite its relatively easy access from main European hubs (four hours direct flight from London), crystal clear waters, stunning hotels, excellent cuisine, dry, sunny weather and lack of pestilential mosquitos that plague many other summer hotspots, the Bodrum peninsula is surprisingly low on the radar of most travelers outside Turkey. It is widely regarded as the St Tropez of Turkey, and the summer destination of choice for the country’s elite. Whisked to the resort by a friendly yet unobtrusive driver in a black hermetically sealed Mercedes SUV, obligatory chilled water in hand, I smile quietly in delicious anticipation of what Amanresorts has created in its first Turkish property. Opened in December 2011, Amanruya’s 36 grey and pink cottages virtually blend into the 60 acres on which they sit. The clever use of natural cooling techniques and locally available materials creates an unmistakable sense of place and a seamless experience that is high on luxurious serenity and low on flashy brashness. A monastic silence prevails

throughout my visit, even though the resort is at full occupancy. The cottages are built and cemented with rocks and clay taken from the surrounding land, there is prodigious use of indigenous alcazu wood, multiple traditional skylights in the ceilings open the rooms up to the abundance of natural light and render the use of daytime lighting unnecessary, and marble floors in the rooms keep temperatures naturally low. Every cottage has its own private plunge pool and expansive sheltered daybed within its private walled garden. I am already picturing mornings of yoga in the garden followed by swims in the azure blue sea, much lounging and a spot of lunch at the pint sized but perfect beach club, another swim and retreat to the coolness of the cottage and yet more lounging on the daybed in the garden. If I tire of the beach club and cottage, there is Amanruya I (Amanruya’s teak-tastic small motor launch) for puttering around the surrounding bays, a series of indoor lounges and 3 storey library tower, and a stunning 50M black slate pool with

calming views of the surrounding landscape and the sea beyond – classic Aman style. Long peaceful days punctuated by the odd massage and spa treatment and Amanruya’s sublime Turkish, Thai, Indonesian and Western cuisine. The variety of the menu may seem slightly incongruous, but it works beautifully. The kitchen’s ethos is to source whole and sustainable foods and the freshest local produce, often supplied by neighbouring villages and farms. Everything I had, from minced seafood lemongrass skewers to lamb curry, traditional mezze and simply cooked seabass was perfection. Verdict? Amanruya is the perfect escape for those in need of a haven for peaceful contemplation. To leave is to wake from a wonderful dream. Amanruya

Available for exclusive rental for up to ten guests, the lodge was originally a 16th century hunting lodge transformed into an exquisite 4-bedroom mountain retreat. In addition to the golf, and skiing in the winter months, the fully staffed lodge has all the trimmings of a luxury hotel – mini spa, outdoor whirlpool and wine tasting room. The Wine Cellar & Tasting Room, is home to 1,500 bottles of local wines with 142 different labels. Owned by Giorgia and Stefano Barbini; Grand daughter of the founder of Brioni menswear and former CEO of fashion house ESCADA respectively, the couple have brought their incomparable knowledge of style, luxury and personal service to the lodge. www.sanlorenzomountainlodge.com

The Palace’s opulent surroundings

Blenheim Palace will add to any theme - for a Venetian theme the original Renaissance architecture and art serve as the perfect backdrop. If you’d like to make a grand entrance, the great lake in the background is perfect for Venetian Gondolas, injecting the perfect finishing touch. Alternatively, for a French aristocratic theme, the magnificent water terraces, landscaped and redesigned to provide the Palace with the formal majestic setting that are reminiscent on a smaller scale of the Parterre d’Eau at Versailles. VERY

GRAND INDEED ELIZA BURNETT DISCOVERS THE DOLDER GRAND Nestled on a hillside with sweeping vistas of Zurich, its lake and the Alps, sits the magnificent Dolder Grand - a hotel single-handedly trying to redefine modern luxury. Independently owned by Swiss financier Urs Schwarzenbach, the hotel encapsulates a perfect balance of tradition and modernity and boasts one of the most spectacular privately owned art collections in the world, a Michelin starred restaurant and a truly extravagant spa. Mr Schwarzenbach amazing art collection is reason alone to visit the hotel. Stroll the halls and admire works of art from Andy Warhol, Henry Moore and Camille Pissarro, each masterpiece waiting to delight. None of the works are labelled to avoid the feeling of a gallery but an iPad catalogue is available for those who want to hunt them all down. The Dolder Grand boasts a vast 4,000sqm spa with both European and Japanese influences. With steam baths, saunas, swimming pool, whirlpools (indoor and outdoor) and snow room it also houses 18 treatment rooms which offer therapies using La Prairie, Kerstin Florian and Amala. It also has a medical wellness centre with a focus on anti-ageing treatments, a workout room, studios for group fitness, a 600 book library all on health, a spa cafe and wellbeing and a well-stocked shop. The culinary offering at the Dolder Grand is as impressive as the art and spa. The main attraction is The Restaurant, a 2 Michelin

Starred and 18 point GaultMillau restaurant under the watchful eye of Chef Heiko Neider. As well as a four or five course dinner there is the option of a 12 course tasting dinner which showcases the elegance, creativity and finesse of his cuisine. Sunday brunch in the Garden restaurant has also become a huge draw with a spectacular buffet style offering. With 173 rooms and suites there is a choice of staying in either of the two new wings or in the old part. I stayed in the spa wing in a beautiful suite, with balcony, overlooking the city and lake. With snowfall in early January the views were breathtaking. The room was well appointed and flowed in a circular theme from bedroom, to living area, dressing room to bathroom. Higher than average storage space and every mod-con you could wish for. One tiny remote control organised the TV (lots of UK Channels) the curtains, and the lights which once mastered was a dream to operate. The hotel also has a 9-hole golf course which is situated at the edge of a forest that offers a variety of outdoor activities including an ice rink that is just a 5 minute stroll from the hotel. Ideally situated for a trip into Zurich, the hotel is home to a train station which makes getting into the centre a breeze. A walk around the old town shows that not every city in Europe has been ruined by global brands such as Starbucks and the Gap as the architecture is - like the hotel - picture perfect.

The plush elegance of Davidov, with its stunning views of St Isaacs cathedral; so close that diners virtually bask in the glow of the burnished gold dome, and wonderfully charming old world service, where the staff simply cannot do enough for you, is the magical ending to a night at the Mariinsky. Traditional Russian dishes executed with lightness and restraint are the best features of the menu. The vodka and caviar tasting of four caviars and vodkas provides an excellent introduction to the meal, but it is their meat pelmenis that capture a place in my heart; a simple dish, marvelously executed and elevated to a sublime level. With over 220 years under its belt, this is St Petersburg’s oldest restaurant, serving very good traditional Russian cuisine in a formal ambiance Angel This divine restaurant-bakery goes by an indecipherable Cyrillic name, but “Angels Welcome” is clearly written outside, an invitation that was clearly irresistible. All soft mint greens and awash in light, serves tiny cuisine and freshly baked goods. Just 2 doors away from all three hotels, it is worth a stop in for lunch or teatime break.

All of the above hotels will be able to make arrangements for excellent private tours. A half day city tour taking in all the and major cathedrals (Church of the Saviour of Spilled Blood, St Isaac’s cathedral, Church of Saints Peter and Paul, Kazan Cathedral, amongst others) is a very pleasant, first day introduction to 'St Petersburgs' cultural riches. Catherine Palace with its grey sky defying, pop-art bright blue, gold accented exterior, is a dazzling and beautiful reminder of Russia’s imperial past. Featuring the Amber Rooms which were unveiled for the first time in 2012. Peterhof, with its series of parks, palaces and fountains is a stunning example of Baroque decoration and style. A night of ballet or opera at the Mariinsky (formerly known as the Kirov) is an unmissable part of the St Petersburg experience.

A proper visit o the incomparable Hermitage (housed in the Winter Palace), with its immense collection spanning pre-historic to contemporary art, superb old masters, cornucopia of art, objects, and treasures amassed over nearly 250 years, would take months and even years. The private highlights tour enables visitors to have a tantalising taster in half a day. The Rembrandt gallery houses an extensive collection that is so moving, it is liable to make you weep. The old master’s genius is evident in every brushstroke, capturing the deepest facets of human emotion, and imbuing them with an inner light that transcends the canvas and still shines as brightly as when they were first created more than 380 years ago. A wonderfully inspiring end to a long weekend in a magical city, redolent with historical significance.

THE

GOODWOOD

LIFE

44

EPICUREANLIFE.CO.UK

ELAINE DEED takes a view on the glorious Goodwood estate Sitting beside his wife, Queen Henrietta, who is holding the baby, King Charles 1 is looking down with a bored expression, gazing from the vast gilt framed Van Dyck on the wall. No doubt our fashion shoot is not as entertaining as the many royalty-graced society balls and soirees that have been held over the past 300 years in the Regency ballroom of Goodwood House. In the other grand rooms of this beautiful West Sussex pile, there are lords, ladies, royalty, children, dogs and mistresses who gaze with equal equanimity. The priceless paintings by the haloed likes of masters, Canaletto, Van Dyck, Stubbs and Reynolds that line the walls, the exquisite chairs, some too precious to sit on and the marble fireplaces are all testament to the grand heritage of Goodwood as a stately home belonging to the Dukes of Richmond since 1697. The Dukes, who have entertained over the years, have made Goodwood famous for lavish parties and balls. House guests have included members of the gentry and royalty such as Edward VII, also a regular horse-racing visitor along with our current monarch Queen Elizabeth who was a regular visitor to the races in July (she had several winners here) and often stayed in the house. Today, it’s very easy to visualize the rooms filled with dancing dukes. This is because Goodwood is no cold, damp stately pile with leaking roof, fallen on hard and costly times. In fact, the rooms are surprisingly warm and cosy, heated to a constant 20 degrees, for the sake of the paintings. This is all because the current Earl of March, (his father is the 10th Duke of Richmond) has managed to maintain Goodwood in all its glory

(and heated rooms) by running it as a prestigious venue that echoes the house’s history of glitz and glamour. Goodwood is as glorious as ever in all her finery, lovingly restored and preserved. Lord and Lady March have continued the Richmond tradition of lavish entertaining albeit on a more commercial level. So Goodwood, today, is still home to some of the finest dining, dancing and designer finery. The glamorous events held on the estate, each year are highlights on the social calendar including the Festival of Speed, The Revival and Glorious Goodwood with its recently reinstated Regency ball. There is, also, the annual Summer exhibition in the main house, this year entitled ‘The French Connection’, plus many a private wedding and party. But the 12,000 acre Goodwood estate is more than an events location. It is also the largest lowland organic farm in the UK, where 452 lambs were born, this spring - and calves and piglets are soon to appear. It has a farm shop and produces its own cheese and milk fresh from its dairy and supplies these along with pork, lamb and beef to the restaurants on the estate as well as wholesale markets including Fortnum and Masons who sell its Rose Veal. Plus Goodwood is a thriving year-round luxury destination featuring the recently refurbished Goodwood Hotel, the Kennels (now a private members Club), the aerodrome and the Goodwood Motor Circuit. It is the ultimate play ground for adrenaline-fueled activities including classic car racing, pilot training and, if you really feel the need for speed, there is the opportunity to take part in Top Gun style dog fights over The

Channel through the Ultimate High flying company. The Cass Sculpture park and the Headquarters of Rolls Royce are also based on the Estate and there are two scenic golf courses, including the Downs Course from where there is a panoramic view over the South Downs to the sea from the 7th hole. Roll back the years to 1759 and there is a similar view across to Chichester and the Isle of Wight, in the painting by George Stubbs hanging over the mantelpiece in the Front Hall where Mary, wife of the third Duke of Richmond, watches her racehorses gallop from the back of her thoroughbred. Which is probably why she doesn’t look as bored as Charles 1 in the ballroom.

From London with Love:

A Russian Staycation Russia is a country of stunning landscapes and rich, diverse cultural experiences. Jen Methvin speaks to Olga Balakleets of the British-Russian Cultural Association on how to experience the best of Russia in London. From the glamorous costumes of Anna Karenina to the evocative landscapes and epic love story of Dr Zhivago, Russia has long held a special place in popular culture as a land of beauty, mystery and historical depth. From Tolstoy and Dostoevsky to the wonderful offerings of the Bolshoi Theatre, there is much

available beyond its borders too for those who want to sample some of its cultural offerings. There is also a wealth of Russian activities available in the UK – home to one of the world’s largest Russian populations in the Diaspora. “London is home to a rich and vibrant Russian community but it can be daunting if you don't

know where to start,” says Olga Balakleets, Artistic Director of the British-Russian Cultural Association and organiser of the London-based Maslenitsa Festival, the largest Russian arts and culture event outside of Russia. For Balakleets, it is the special position that Russia holds, between the East and the West, which

has given it such a distinctive cultural identity. “Russian culture is a unique symbiosis of European and Asian traditions and has produced a number of famous artists and writers, resulting in world-class literature, philosophy, music, architecture, art, cinema, animation and more,” she says. “Furthermore, events such as the Maslenitsa Festival are so important, not not only because they allow Russians...but because they allow the citizens of London to interact and be introduced to some of our rich cultural offerings." Here, Balakleets has chosen some of her top tips on the Russian scene in London for those who want to try a ‘staycation’ and experience Russia without having to grab their passports or deal with the discomfort of international flights, travel and excess baggage.

HISTORY

Discover the fascinating and complicated historical relationship between Russia and the UK with Treasures of the Royal Courts: Tudors, Stuarts and the Russian Tsars, on at the prestigious Victoria and Albert Museum until 14 July 2013. The exhibition examines the development of cultural diplomacy and trade between Britain and Russia. Spend the afternoon revelling in the majesty and pageantry of the royal courts of Henry VIII, Charles II, Ivan IV (Ivan the Terrible) and the early Romanovs. With over 150 objects on display, meander through tailor-made suits of armour, stunning jewellery, sumptuous textiles, furnishings, fine clothing and portraits of ambassadors, courtiers and monarchs revealing life at the royal courts between 1509 and 1685. For more information visit: vam.ac.uk

Stroll through their most recent exhibition before grabbing traditional Russian tea and homemade honey cake at their café. Can’t make it to the gallery? There is a wealth of information on Russian culture and art available on the online portal Calvert Journal. For more information visit: Saatchi-gallery. co.uk | Calvert22.org

LITERATURE

For a more in-depth look into Russian culture, browse the dedicated Russian section at Waterstones in Piccadilly: The Russian Bookshop stocks nearly 5,000 Russian language titles (as well as Russian books translated into English) covering history, art, poetry, fiction, biography and children’s literature. The dedicated Russian-speaking staff

can help you find just what you are looking for. For more information visit: Waterstones.com

FAMILY FUN

To experience the true spirit of Russia, each year you can visit the free annual Maslenitsa Festival in Trafalgar Square. Held recently in March, it is the largest Russian celebration of culture outside Russia, and a chance to welcome spring and indulge before the beginning of Orthodox Lent. On hand are food stalls, craft tables and the ever-popular children's marquee, along with top Russian Popular and traditional music performances. This year included a special visit by the Buranovskie Babushki (Singing Grannies) of Eurovision fame. For more information visit: Maslenitsa.co.uk

From 9 April–19 May you can catch the National Theatre’s production of Maxim Gorky’s Children of the Sun, newly re-envisioned by Andrew Upton. This darkly comic play is set in Russia as the country rolls towards revolution. It depicts the new middle class; foolish yet likable, as they flounder about, philosophising and flirting, blind to their impending annihilation. For more information visit: NationalTheatre. org.uk

FOOD

No staycation would be complete without sampling the local cuisine. For stunning ambiance and an authentic menu try Mari Vanna in Knightsbridge. Once there, you can sample some of Russia’s spectacular culinary delicacies from celebrity chef Alexander Rappaport. Whether you opt for a traditional dish such as Borscht with Pampushka (beetroot soup with smoked beef) or the more extravagant Pelmeni (veal dumplings), Mari Vanna never disappoints. If you’re in the mood for more casual dining, try L’eto Café at one of their many locations throughout London. I'd say 'grab a seat' to avoid repetition of 'take-away' and 'take a seat' and sample one of their renowned salads or even a full Russian breakfast. For more information visit: MariVanna.co.uk | LetoCafe.co.uk

ART

Spend a day immersed in the vibrant Russian Contemporary art scene. From now until 5 May, the Saatchi Gallery in Chelsea is presenting Gaiety is the Most Outstanding Feature of the Soviet Union: New Art from Russia. Their first Contemporary Russian art show features 18 emerging artists showcasing painting, photography, sculpture and installation works. Then, head across town to trendy Shoreditch and visit Calvert 22, a non-profit foundation with an art gallery space dedicated to the presentation of contemporary art and culture from Russia, CIS countries and Eastern Europe.

4 CAN’T GET ENOUGH?

If you are interested in getting out of London, Houghton Hall in Norfolk has created an exhibit Houghton Hall & The Hermitage, showcasing the magnificent art collection of Great Britain’s first Prime Minister, Sir Robert Walpole, sold to Catherine the Great to adorn the Hermitage in St Petersburg. Dare

Azzy Asghar visits a very exotic place called Geneva

It is not only car designers who are given the chance to dream with their visions of the future realised through creating concept cars for the auto shows, but members of the attending public have endless options of wishing ‘If only…’. Never was this truer than at the 83rd Geneva Motor Show where it wasn’t only the concept cars that took your breath away, but cars that are literally ready and rolling off the conveyor belt. Of course, having said that, none of these cars are created as you perhaps might imagine on an assembly line, but, more accurately, by very talented engineers in white lab coats in factories where you could literally eat off the floor! The three cars that stole all the headlines and admiring gazes at the show were the exotics pictured here. Representing the three

leading names in dream cars they all vied - or screamed out - for attention - and boy did they get it. Ferrari, Lamborghini and McLaren are all established members of the supercar club but each attracts very different and very loyal buyers. Ferrari offered us LaFerrari which represents the Italian superbrands’ most ambitious project to date. Combining unrivalled experience gained from both their involvement in F1 and many years of creating road cars that have been envied by every other marque, the LaFerrari pushes technology boundaries like no car before it. No previous road going Ferrari has ever boasted this level of performance and innovation. While only 499 very lucky people will get to enjoy this car - the technical advances will, in time, filter down to the rest of the Ferrari

range for everyone to benefit from. The LaFerrari - as with most Ferrari’s - will serve as the benchmark for all other supercars to follow. McLaren used the show to introduce their astonishing new McLaren P1. The mission of the designers and engineers was simple – to create the best driver’s car in the world on road and track. To achieve this objective, McLaren utilised all of its 50 years of racing experience and success, especially in the fields of aerodynamics and lightweight carbon fibre technology. The result is a car that has an unprecedented amount of downforce for a road vehicle: similar levels to a GT3 racing car and yet with even greater ground effect. This downforce not only boosts cornering and braking performance. It also helps balance, stability, exceptional

what can you say - just look at it. Perhaps not the car to drop by the local Waitrose - but for those that dream of supercars this car could well be the one to eclipse them all and the one that will serve as a screensaver on millions of computers! Sadly, only three examples of the

750bhp, 6.5 litre supercar are to be built and all three have been pre-sold. They are not allowed to say - but apparently - two are heading for the USA and one for the Middle-East. I’m already dreaming of Geneva 2014!

Bentley

Flying Spur It’s difficult to believe that the new sedan to be launched by Bentley in Geneva would not be heralded as a benchmark as it seems everything they do is exemplary. The very name Bentley conjures up levels of standards of the highest order and when it comes to combining luxury and performance the Flying Spur leads where others will follow, So off I went to the Geneva Motor Show where the car was unveiled to a very eager and enormous press core who had flocked to the stand as if the Pope had just announced that he was only joking about retiring! The most luxurious and powerful sedan ever to wear the Bentley marque offers effortless driveability and time honoured craftsmanship within a beautifully sculpted design. The new Flying Spur is powered by Bentley’s renowned 6.0-litre, twin turbo W12 engine which is coupled to a ZF eight-speed

transmission. The new Flying Spur features more power than any other Bentley four-door in history and a 14 per cent improvement in the power-to-weight ratio over the outgoing model. Despite its executive size the car achieves an incredible 0-60 mph time of 4.3 seconds and a top-speed of 200 mph. Traditional Bentley styling cues are everpresent with a sporting stance and contemporary details that include a lower roof line and a more upright chrome grill up front. Sharp feature lines complement muscular rear haunches, while LED day-time running lights, dipped headlights and taillights characterise the front and rear profiles. Inside is a luxurious, spacious cabin that is sculpted with hand-crafted leather hides and wood veneers. The sumptuous interior of the new Flying Spur includes 600 new parts, with only the sun

visors, grab handles, armrests and some of the front console and controls carried over from the previous generation. Available in both four and five-seat configurations, the new Flying Spur features redesigned front and rear seats trimmed in natural premium-quality leather. The new seats use a softer yet more durable hide unique to Bentley and are available in twelve different colours. Electrically-operated rear side blinds, fitted as standard, afford privacy to rear-seat passengers and customers can opt for a glass sunroof at no additional cost. Behind the central rear armrest, a nine litre bottle cooler can be ordered which keep drinks perfectly chilled. To complement the luxury you would expect from a Bentley is state-of-the-art technology that you might not. Driver and passengers alike interface with the car and the outside world through touchscreen infotainment, mobile connectivity including Wi-Fi, a Rear Sear Entertainment suite and a new hand-held 8 Touch Screen Remote which allows rear-cabin occupants to control an extensive range of features from the comfort of their seat. An eight-channel, eightspeaker audio system with Balanced Mode Radiators provide high quality sound clarity, with the 1100W Naim for Bentley premium system available as an option. MAJESTIC MAYFAIR Penelope Court, Partner at Beauchamp Estates, looks at Mayfair, the heart of established residential London and enjoying its greatest renaissance since the 1920’s.

Boasting some of London’s finest Michelin starred restaurants, five star hotels, designer shops as well as casinos and night clubs, Mayfair is, arguably, the true residential heart of London. Whilst offering many peaceful pockets, it is also an exciting and somewhat intriguing place to live, especially for the more sophisticated homebuyer. Some of the best clubs in London, including Annabel’s, Mark’s Club and Harry’s Bar attract a truly international clientele and, as ever, The Bar at Claridge’s is the place to be seen. Mayfair has its own unique flavour. It is undisputedly luxurious and still perhaps just a little louche which only contributes to its allure. Selfcontained, and at the same time with the slightest whiff of the sybaritic it is undoubtedly the jewel in the crown of London town. Shopping in Mayfair still retains a village-like atmosphere. You will find small antique shops, art galleries, the famous Hayward & Hill bookshop, first class florists and the Mount Street Deli – all side by side with the biggest names in fashion, jewellery, motoring and art. Bounded by the magnificent Hyde Park and Green Park which leads directly into St James Park it also has some wonderful garden squares – Berkeley Square and Grosvenor Square which are open to the public as is Mount Street Gardens. These pleasing green landscapes create one of the most pleasant areas in central London in which to live. The architecture is hugely diverse with the grand and the quaint, the cutting edge and the art deco jostling for attention. There is a premium to be paid for all of this, perhaps as much as £4,000 per square foot or higher for the finest. However, properties close to these open spaces rarely come to the market and when they do will always command premiums. The most sought after locations include Charles Street for the grandeur of the buildings and the generously proportioned rooms with

wonderful period features. Chesterfield Hill is renowned for its stunning facades, Mount Street boasts its many quirky shops and restaurants and Grosvenor Square, Berkeley Square and Park Lane enjoy some of the best views in Mayfair. The past few years have witnessed the conversion of offices and other commercial premises into residential property, completing the renaissance of Mayfair. The overall effect has been to breathe new life into this ‘Grande Dame’ of the capital. Today it is enjoying a popularity not seen perhaps since the 1920s! To give an idea of price for a small family house, you would need to invest at least £6-£7 million pounds compared to £3m about five years ago. You would have to pay at least £2.5m or more for a two bedroom flat compared to a similar flat, which five years ago would have cost around £1m in Mayfair. According to our recent research, the highest price per square foot for a flat was well in excess of £4,000 per sq. ft. Suffice to say, you certainly pay for the privilege of living in one of London’s most exclusive enclaves, but it is a safe long term investment, both financially and in terms of lifestyle, so long as you can find a ready and willing vendor that is!
