DENPASAR - Indonesia is investigating the case of an Australian who is believed to have been infected with HIV while getting a tattoo on the resort island of Bali, an official said Monday. “We received a report about this case from the health ministry yesterday and officials will be visiting tattoo parlours today to verify

this claim,” Bali health department chief Nyoman Sutedja told AFP. “At this point, we are still investigating. We can’t say for sure if the

patient caught the virus from getting a tattoo or sexual contact,” he added. There are currently 4,200 HIV/ AIDS cases on Bali, Sutedja said. Australian health authorities on Friday said a patient diagnosed with HIV probably contracted the virus while being tattooed on the island. They did not reveal any details of the individual concerned. More than

a million tourists visit Bali every year to enjoy its white, surf beaches, nightlife and Hindu culture. Indonesian officials said last year that the number of known HIV/ AIDS cases on Bali was soaring, with one in four prostitutes reported to be HIV-positive and the number of infections jumping almost 19 percent from the year before.

Year’s End Note for Balinese Art

Need more creative space The creative process need to be given the biggest space in order to develop Balinese art and culture. By the availability of the rooms to do creative process, there is great hope that more art works will be produced. How much the space for the creative process available in 2011 and what is the hope for 2012, here is the report.

Long time ago, many karawitan arts, dances or traditional Balinese performances were born by the process of the creation in Bale Banjar. This was because Balai Banjar is the place to gather with all of the creative idea. An art would be created in a communal fashion. Even tough there was somebody considered as coach but actually they were filling and teaching each other. Nowadays, Balai Banjar is not as crowded as before. Even if there are people who learn to play

the traditional Balinese music or dance but the process of creativity is very rare can be found in it. The people usually learn the existing dances or music academically or somewhere else. Many artists want to return the Balai Bajar into what it is used to be. The government actually has build many building to perform but it is not to create something. There is no creativity process, creation, and the filling process among the artists. Continued on page 6

Princes visit queen’s KXVEDQG LQ KRVSLWDO Agence France Presse

Prince Philip spent Christmas night in hospital as he recovers from heart surgery but was given a festive boost by a visit from grandsons Prince William and Harry. The outspoken Philip -- who at the age of 90 is the longest serving royal consort in British history -- missed the royal Christmas celebrations for the first time as he recovered from surgery to clear a blocked coronary artery. Six of his eight grandchildren with Queen Elizabeth II came to the Papworth hospital near Cambridge after the royal family’s Christmas church service and lunch at their Sandringham estate in eastern England. New wife Catherine did not come with William, 29, who arrived in a Range Rover along with Zara Tindall and Peter Phillips, the children of the queen’s daughter Princess Anne. Harry, 27, drove an Audi which also carried Beatrice and Eugenie, the daughters of the queen’s sec-

ond youngest son Prince Andrew. William and Harry are the sons of heir to the throne Prince Charles and the late Princess Diana. The queen -- who visited Philip on Saturday with her children -- stressed the importance of family and friendship in her annual pre-recorded Christmas address to the nation which was televised Sunday. Wearing a red dress, she said the marriage of William and Catherine in April was her personal reminder of the value of loved ones, and that in times of hardship we often “find strength from our families”. The royals earlier told wellwishers who had gathered to see them attend the Christmas morning service in the St Mary Magdalene church at Sandringham that Prince Philip’s condition was improving. William said his grandfather, known for his outspoken and occasionally gruff comments, was “very well, thank you. Getting much better”, while Charles added that Philip was “very well”.

PAJU, South Korea - The widow of former South Korean President Kim Dae-jung, the author of a now-jettisoned engagement policy with North Korea, crossed the fortified land border between the two sides on Monday to pay her respects to deceased dictator Kim Jong-il.

Prince Charles, his wife Camilla, and Prince William and his wife Catherine arrive for the royal family’s Christmas Day church service at St Mary Magdalene Church in Sandringham, eastern England.

Ties between the North and South have been frozen since the election of conservative South Korean President Lee Myung-bak in 2008, who cut aid in a bid to force the North to abandon a nuclear programme and bring it to the negotiating table. A thirteen-member delegation, led by Lee Hee-ho, the widow of former president Kim Dae-jung who

masterminded the so-called “Sunshine Policy” of engagement with the North, crossed the border by car and will pay their respects at the bier of Kim Jong-il in Pyongyang. “I hope my visit to North Korea will help improve South-North Korea relations,” Yoon Chul-koo, an aide to Lee, quoted her as saying at an immigration office at the southern border of the De-Militarized Zone.

Lee, who met Kim Jong-il in Pyongynag in 2000 in the first inter-Korean summit since the end of the Korean War in 1953, will stay for two days and will not attend the December 28 funeral. Most South Koreans are banned from going to the North under the current government’s policy and South Korea, which remains technically at war with the North, is not sending an official delegation to mourn Kim, who died earlier this month. Asked by reporters at the crossing point whether the delegation plans to meet North Korea’s new leader, Kim Jong-un, Yoon said the visit was for “pure condolence.”

Japan urges China to help keep in check North Korea Reuters

BEIJING - Japan urged China on Monday to shoulder a big role in ensuring that North Korea avoids volatile moves despite uncertainties created by the death of Pyongyang’s leader, Kim Jong-il. Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda also nudged Chinese President Hu Jintao to share information about developments in North Korea, where the succession of Kim’s youngest son, Kim Jongun, has fanned speculation about who will really control the secretive one-party state and its nuclear

weapons programme. “It is important that we will not let the death of the Chairman of the National Defence Commission Kim have a negative impact on the peace and stability of the Korean peninsula,” Noda was quoted by a Japanese official as telling Hu in Beijing. Kim Jong-il’s many titles included head of the military. “Under these circumstance, the role of China, which is the chair country of the six-party talks and has a big influence on North Korea, is extremely important,” said Noda, according to the official who brief

reporters on condition that he remained anonymous. The Japanese prime minister was the first regional leader to visit Beijing since Kim Jong-il’s death was announced a week ago, putting Kim Jong-un in formal charge of North Korea, which has long relied on China for diplomatic and economic support. China has also sought to defuse confrontation by hosting six-party nuclear disarmament talks since August 2003. The now-stalled negotiations bring together North and South Korea, China, the United States, Japan and Russia.

Workers return to Freeport’s Indonesia gold mine Associated Press

TIMIKA — Workers in Indonesia have started returning to Freeport-McMoRan’s largest gold and copper mine. Production at the troubled Grasberg mine in easternmost Papua province has been crippled since 8,000 unionized employees walked off their jobs in September, demanding higher wages. They ended their strike Dec. 14 after getting a 37 percent wage hike and improved benefits. Union spokesman Virgo Solosa says that on Sunday, workers removed roadblocks to the mine sites and a traditional stone-burning ceremony was held to officially mark the end of the strike. It is expected to take about a week for workers to fully return and for full operations to resume at the mine.

BIMA — Two people have been killed and 10 others injured during a violent protest over a planned gold mine in eastern Indonesia. The victims were among nearly 1,000 people in Lambu village in West Nusatenggara province who were trying to stop the gold mining project by Australia’s Arc Exploration Ltd. and its Indonesian partner, PT Sumber Mineral Nusantara. The villagers fear the project will destroy their land and threaten forests and water resources.

National police spokesman Maj. Gen. Saud Usman Nasution says police were forced to fire on Saturday’s protest after demonstrators burned down dozens of government buildings, banks and homes. Nasution said Sunday that police arrested 47 people involved in the protest, which disrupted port and ferry services in the coastal town

of Sape. Meanwhile, according to the Police, they have named 47 people suspects in a clash between demonstrators and police personnel in Bima district. “The Bima police resort has so far questioned 47 suspects. They are members of the Anti-Mining People Front who were involved in blockade and arson,” explained Saud. He said police investigators would interrogate each of the suspects for their alleged part in violent acts, including occupying the Sape

ferry port and vandalizing and setting fire to public facilities. “All the suspects will be interrogated about their involvement in the case,” he said. In the rally, the demonstrators vandalized the office of the Lambu police precinct and set fire to the official residence of the chief of the Lambu police precinct, four units of police dormitory, and a Bank Tabungan Negara (BTN) building. In addition, they also vandalized a forestry office, a youth and sports office and 25 houses, he added.

The demonstrators demanded that the Bima district head lift a decision allowing mining firm PT Sumber Mineral Nusantara to operate in the district and urged the security agencies to release AS who had earlier been handed to the public prosecutor`s office. AS was charged with inciting the mob to set fire to the office of Lambu subdistrict head on March 10, 2011. Nasution said a company of police personnel from Jakarta had been dispatched to Bima to restore security there.

Indonesia’s chocoholics lead an Asian quality wave Reuters

JAKARTA - Arriving in Indonesia just a little over a decade ago, Belgium chocolatier Thierry Detournay was dismayed at the lack of quality chocolate on offer in the world’s third-largest cocoa producer. But now, less than seven years after launch, his luxury Chocolate Monggo bars can be found in many of the gigantic and glitzy malls of downtown Jakarta. As Southeast Asia’s largest economy goes from strength to strength -- highlighted by a return to investment-grade status by Fitch Ratings this month -- Indonesia’s Willy Wonka is one of many tapping into a growing Asian market for luxury chocolate. “When I started to make chocolate in Indonesia, I realized there was no good chocolate,” said De-

tournay, who began by converting a pink Vespa into a stall and selling home-made chocolate goodies at local markets. Yogyakarta-based Chocolate Monggo now employs 50 people on the production side, sources cocoa beans from Javanese, Sumatran and Celebes plantations, and churns out as many as 75,000 chocolate bars per month. “While I’m doing this business, I can see the tastes of Indonesian people changing,” he added. “Now more and more people -- young and middle class adults -- are looking more for dark chocolate, and quality.” Chocolate consumption in Indonesia has plenty of scope to grow -- annual cocoa demand is estimated at only 0.2 kg per person, versus 0.6 kg in neighbor Malaysia and 10 kg in Europe. Indonesia has said it wants to

triple domestic cocoa consumption over the next three years. Chocolate Party was a recent business-government joint event in the country’s capital that hoped to help hit this target. As well as a giant chocolate fountain, there were also stalls by Nestle’s Milo, Dunkin’ Donuts, Indonesian consumer firm GarudaFood and Jakarta-based Chocolate School. “Five years ago, people in Indonesia knew about chocolate through chocolate drinks, but now people know about praline, chocolate bars with peanut or ginger,” said Christina Erawati, principal at the school, which teaches chocolatier skills. The growing taste for high quality chocolate in emerging markets -especially in Asia -- will help boost global chocolate sales 2 percent to $81.8 billion in 2011, according to Mintel.

Chocolate sale in China are forecast to rise 19 percent to $1.2 billion this year, and in India by 7 percent to $633 million, with Indonesian sales likely to jump 25 percent to $1.1 billion, data from the market research firm showed. “From a consumer standpoint in China, chocolate is a relatively new taste,” said Marcia Mogelonsky, global food analyst at Mintel. She added that Indonesian chocolate sales would hit $1.9 billion in 2015.Indonesian cocoa grinders and major overseas investors have spotted the potential in Asia and are expanding rapidly. The country is attracting companies such as U.S. agribusiness giant Cargill and Barry Callebaut, the world’s top chocolate maker, which plan to invest almost $150 million in cocoa grinding plants in Sulawesi. But it looks increasingly likely

that the growing Indonesian middle class won’t be eating only chocolate from home-grown cocoa in the future.Bean output in Asia’s secondlargest grinder after Malaysia is likely to fall to a seven-year low in 2011 because of bad weather and disease, while quality is also an issue. “There is still a very big problem about the quality in general, about the beans,” said Chocolate Monggo’s Detournay. Smallholder cocoa farmers, who own about 90 percent of Indonesia’s total plantation area, are also switching to crops like rubber, coffee and palm oil, which can offer bigger profits. “The next three to five years, no farmer will want to plant cocoa and some will replace,” said Zulhefi Sikumbang, chairman at cocoa producers association Askindo, who runs his own 1,200 hectare cocoa plantation in West Java.

Bali COP achievement OHDGV QDWLRQDO ‫ۋ‬JXUH ENP S R - Bali’s COP (Circle of Period) for electrical consumers were considered to lead a national figure of 1.50 days of customer’s payment accuracy in 2011. “The value is based on the calculation of credit average divided by sales multiplied by the number of days in a month,” Commercial Manager of the Bali state electricity company (PT. PLN)

Syamsul Huda said. Syamsul said that Bali’s COP figure is considered to be the best because it has been the lowest in Indonesia. This achievement is made by hard work of the Bali office by conducting a customer sweepstakes appreciation program with many rewards. The Bali PLN office is recently also implementing a program to disconnect

customer’s electricity of those who are not paying their bills properly. “Such program is meant to encourage and accustom all customers to pay their power bills on time,” Syamsul said. ccording to the regulations, PLN has the right to disconnect power lines of customers who pay their bills over a predetermined period, on the 20th of every month.

The company has the right to cut off it power lines on the ne t day if the customers have still not paid their bills, he said. The program turned out to have a correlation on customer habit in paying their bills on time and eventually reducing the credit value. “Based on our latest data, the current receivables are Rp 8 billion,” he said.

“Mission: Impossible” FUXLVHV WR WRS RI ER[ RI‫ۋ‬FH Reuters

LOS ANGELES - “Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol” cruised to No. 1 at box offices on Sunday, even as major new movies opened on Christmas Day which may change top 10 results when final numbers are tallied. The new Tom Cruise movie rang up an estimated $26.5 million in U.S. and Canadian ticket sales over the three-day weekend, according to studio estimates, after expanding from a limited release in Imax and other large-screen theaters last week. Paramount Pictures, which released the movie, said it expects a four-day tally of slightly more than $40 million by Monday, when final estimates are reported. The film’s cumulative ticket sales are expected to reach just over $72 after Monday. Indeed, the weekend box office race truly will finish on Monday because Christmas day annually is among the most crowded days in theaters and on Sunday, director Steven Spielberg’s widely-anticipated “War Horse” makes its debut along with another newcomer, thriller “The Darkest Hour.” Hollywood’s major studios loaded the release schedule last week heading into the holiday, expecting the films to play well

between now and New Year’s Eve while parents and kids are away from work and school. As a result, a clear picture of how the movie studios fared this Christmas season awaits the full week of box office reports. Meanwhile, over the weekend Warner Bros’ “Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows” took the No. 2 spot on U.S. and Canadian (domestic) box office charts with $17.8 million, according to Sunday’s estimates. Cumulative ticket sales for “Sherlock” after two weeks now stand at roughly $76.5 million. Another holdover from last week, family comedy “Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked” squeaked into No. 3 with $13.3 million, pushing its total domestic ticket sales to $50.3 million after two weeks in theaters. Following it were a trio of last week’s newcomers, widely-anticipated “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo,” family

Lindsay Lohan “smart” to do Playboy shoot, dad says Reuters

LOS ANGELES - It was a nude photo shoot even a father could love. Lindsay Lohan’s appearance in this month’s issue of Playboy has received Michael Lohan’s endorsement. Lilo’s often estranged father tells Dr. Drew Pinsky on an episode of “Lifechangers” next week that the shoot was a smart move for his daughter, because it got her working again after years of legal troubles. “If she’s happy with it, I’m happy with it,” Lohan said, according to a report in the New York Daily News. That said, he won’t look at his daughter’s latest work. “I haven’t seen it and I never look at it, any of it,” Lohan said. The magazine features an eyecatching cover of the actress channeling Marilyn Monroe while straddling a red Playboy bunny chair -- inside the

issue, she loses the chair entirely. Lilo’s mother, Dina Lohan, was the one who broke the news of her daughter’s photo spread to the press and assured “Herbie Fully Loaded” fans the world over that the shoot would be “tastefully done.” But she reportedly had reservations about the amount of Lindsay that was on display. “I think it was essentially mama and the folks around her that kept pushing for less nudity,” Playboy publisher Hugh Hefner told E! recently. “And I said, ‘We’re doing a nude pictorial here. We’re going to do it in a very classy way and we’re going to do it in a way in which it will not be forgotten.’” Parental reactions aside, the public seems to be lapping up the Lohan issue. Thanks to Lindsay bearing all, the magazine sold 55 percent more ad pages than the same issue the previous year.

film “The Adventures of Tintin” and comedy “We Bought A Zoo.” “Dragon Tattoo” landed at No. 4 on Sunday with $13 million, a hair behind the chipmunks, and a Sony spokesman cautioned the studio’s figure could change when Sunday’s figures are final. “Today and tomorrow should be our strongest days of the holiday frame,” the spokesman said, noting that the studio did not have a Monday estimate. “Dragon Tattoo” now has estimated total domestic ticket sales of $21.4 million since its debut. “Tintin,” another Spielberg film released by Paramount, landed at No. 5 over the weekend with $9.1 million. The studio sees it rising to $14.3 million after Monday. Total ticket sales by Monday are seen at $22.3 million since its debut. Finally, another new entry this weekend, the comedy “We Bought a Zoo,” landed at No. 6 with $7.8 million.

Michael Buble brings “Christmas” to “CityVille” Reuters

LOS ANGELES - Singer Michael Buble is taking his “Christmas” spirit into the virtual realm, collaborating with popular Facebook game “CityVille” and giving an interactive gift to his fans over the holidays. “CityVille” players will be able to socialize with Buble’s personal avatar, which will talk and sing in different settings including a holiday bonfire, as well as hunt for presents that Buble himself would like under his own Christmas tree. “Social gaming has opened up a new door for artists to connect with their fans,” Buble told Reuters, adding that “CityVille” players will “see a different side of me in the game and also connect with me in a really personal way.” “CityVille,” developed by social network game company Zynga, allows players to create and grow their own towns, and according to Appdata.com, is the No. 1 game on Facebook. It can also be played through Google Plus and smartphones. The collaboration with Buble follows Zynga’s partnership with Lady Gaga earlier this year, who had her own town called GagaVille on Zynga game “FarmVille.” It featured unicorns, crystals and unreleased songs, coinciding with the release of her album “Born This Way.” Grammy-winning Buble, 36, is currently enjoying a fourth week at the top of the Billboard 200 album chart with his holiday record “Christmas,” which

features a selection of festive classics. “I set out to record a classic Christmas album in the old style recorded off the floor in the studio. I wanted it to sound and feel authentic,” said Buble of his holiday album. “I think no matter what a person’s musical taste is, there is always room to enjoy a great holiday record,” he said.

JERUSALEM — A rare clay seal found under Jerusalem’s Old City appears to be linked to religious rituals practiced at the Jewish Temple 2,000 years ago, Israeli archaeologists said Sunday. The coin-sized seal found near the Jewish holy site at the Western Wall bears two Aramaic words meaning “pure for God.” Archaeologist Ronny Reich of Haifa University said it dates from between the 1st century B.C. to 70 A.D. — the year Roman forces put down a Jewish revolt and destroyed the second of the two biblical temples in Jerusalem. The find marks the first discovery of a written seal from that period of Jerusalem’s history, and appeared to be a unique physical artifact from ritual practice in the Temple, said Reich, co-director of the excavation. Very few artifacts linked to the Temples have been discovered so far. The site of the Temple itself — the enclosure known to Jews as the Temple Mount and to Muslims as the Noble Sanctuary — remains off-limits to archaeologists because of its religious and political sensitivity. Archaeologists say the seal was likely used by Temple officials approving an object for ritual use — oil, perhaps, or an animal intended for sacrifice. Materials used by Temple

priests had to meet stringent purity guidelines stipulated in detail in the Jewish legal text known as the Mishna, which also mention the use of seals as tokens by pilgrims. The find, Reich said, is “the first time an indication was brought by archaeology about activities in the Temple Mount — the religious activities of buying and offering and giving to the Temple itself.” The site where the seal was found is on the route of a main street that ran through ancient Jerusalem just outside the Temple compound. Aren Maeir of Bar-Ilan University, a biblical archaeologist not connected to the dig, said the seal was special because it “was found right next to the Temple and is similar to what we see described in the Mishna.” “It’s nice when we can connect an activity recorded in ancient sources with archaeological finds,” he said.

Doctors, moms take on No. 1 polluter in Utah Associated Press Writer

SALT LAKE CITY — When winter comes to Utah and atmospheric conditions trap a soup of pollutants close to the ground, doctors say it turns every resident in the Salt Lake basin into the equivalent of a cigarette smoker. For days or weeks at a time, an inversion layer in which high pressure systems can trap a roughly 1,300-footthick layer of cold air — and the pollutants that build up inside it — settles over the basin, leaving some people coughing and wheezing. “There’s no safe level of particulate matter you can breathe,” said Salt Lake City anesthesiologist Cris Cowley, who is among a number of Utah doctors raising the alarm over some of the nation’s worst wintertime air. The doctors and a lobby group of

Utah mothers are blaming a company that mines nearly a mile deep in the largest open pit in the world for contributing one-third of Salt Lake County’s pollution. The rest is from tailpipe and other emissions. They have filed a lawsuit against Kennecott Utah Copper, accusing it of violating the U.S. Clean Air Act. The company operates with the consent of state regulators who enforce the federal law. The company is the No. 1 industrial air polluter along Utah’s heavily populated 120-mile Wasatch Front and operates heavy trucks and power and smelter plants. It says the claims are “without merit.” Kennecott cites the blessing of Utah regulators for expanded operations and new controls that hold emissions steady.

LONDON - For those who couldn’t quite make it to Stonehenge to watch the sun rise on Thursday’s winter solstice, a new app could offer some consolation by offering a virtual tour around the mysterious stones. Features include a Google Maps image of the circle of stones giving different views, allowing users to stand within the virtual stones and physically move about the UNESCO World Heritage Site. “It makes for an absorbing immersive experience and allows people to see and hear Stonehenge as it was

5,000 years ago,” said Rupert Till, from the University of Huddersfield, who worked on the design. The app also offers a history of the prehistoric monument in the southwestern English county of Wiltshire. Some 1,000 people gathered at the site on Thursday morning as the sun rose at around 3 a.m. EST on the shortest day of the year. The shortest day of the year often falls on December 21 but this year and last year druids and pagans marked the first day of winter on December 22. That is because the modern calendar of 365 days a year, with an extra day every four years, does not correspond exactly to the solar year of 365.2422 days.

Williams believes F1 team has learned vital lessons 'XH WR GLIÀFXOW FDPSDLJQ

Williams had to live through the disappointment of its worst ever season in Formula 1 if it was to fully understand what changes are needed to move it further up the grid. That is the view of team chairman Adam Parr, who believes that although the lacklustre showings of 2011 were hard to deal with at the time, they were essential for highlighting the areas where Williams was weak. In an exclusive interview with AUTOSPORT, Parr said that the year gone showed that the structure Williams had in place before the arrival of Mike Coughlan, Mark Gillan and Jason Somerville was not good enough. “In reality we’ve been in the middle ranks for some years now,” he explained. “You don’t have to do anything if you’re plodding along in the middle in this sort of cotton wool world, and I think what’s happened to us is that we have really seen not only that the current level of performance is unacceptable, but also the need to make radical changes. “It was actually put very nicely by Mark Gillan. Patrick [Head] said to him, ‘I wish this season was over,’ and Mark said, ‘Everything that we’re experiencing

out there is vital.’ “If Mark and the other new members of the team had joined at the end of the season, they wouldn’t have seen many of the underlying problems. “They would have seen the performance, but I think we’ve all had the opportunity to really get deep into the roots of it.” Parr adds that the fact Williams has gained an understanding of its deficiencies gives him reason to feel confident about its potential to recover. “The good news is that sometimes in life you’re not performing, but you don’t know why,” he said. “We understand precisely where we’re weak, where the opportunities are, and what we have to do to get there. “The next question is, do we have the people and resources in place to make those changes? And the answer is, absolutely.

“To be honest we needed some fresh eyes, turning over the rocks, looking at all the nasty stuff under the rocks, and bringing it to the surface, and just getting it out there. “I’ve been here for five years and you adapt to the environment you’re in and the way you do things, and you accept it. And what we have learned this year is that we can’t accept certain things.”

Karun Chandhok wants to continue F1 third driver role Karun Chandhok is hoping to dovetail a third driver role in Formula 1 next season with a sportscar campaign in the new World Endurance Championship. The Indian, who appeared nine times as a Friday driver for Team Lotus this year as well as racing in Germany, accepts that it is very unlikely he will land a full-time cockpit for 2012. However, he is hoping to secure another third driver role - possibly for the renamed Caterham team - as well as racing in sportscars. “There are some opportunities to continue as a Friday driver and obviously I still want to be in F1,” Chandhok told AUTOSPORT. “To get a race seat in F1 is almost impossible for 2012, so I don’t think that’s going to happen. “But it’s very clear that I must go racing again because standing on the sidelines for another year can’t be good for me. That will also help me if there are F1 race opportunities in the future. “My target is still F1, but the new World Endurance Championship is very interesting. There’s only one clash with the F1 calendar, so I can keep my hand in there doing a bunch of Fridays and then hopefully combine it with an LMP1 programme. “Competing at Le Mans is one of those boxes that you have to tick. I’ve raced at Monaco, Macau, Spa and Silverstone, and Le Mans is another one on that must-do list.” Chandhok is exploring various opportunities in sportscars, and would be willing to consider driving for a privateer team. This would allow him to build up experience in that type of racing, after spending the majority of his career in single-seaters. “I’m sensible enough to know that I’ve got a lot to learn about sportscar racing,” he said. “Everyone would love to start with a works team, but they already have strong driver line-ups. “It’s such a different type of racing. I’d love to do LMP1 with good experienced team-mates and a good team that I can learn from. There are a lot of options.” “Between the i1 series, sportscars and a third driver role, there should be enough to keep me busy.”
