NEW YORK — The names of the Sept. 11 dead, some called out by children barely old enough to remember their fallen mothers and fathers, echoed across ground zero Sunday in a haunting but hopeful tribute on the 10th anniversary of the terror attack. “God is our refuge and strength,” President Barack Obama said, quoting the Bible.

The site looked utterly different than it had for any other Sept. 11 anniversary: Along with the names in bronze, two manmade waterfalls flowed directly over the footprints of the towers, surrounded by dozens of white oak trees. The New York ceremony, which ended with the playing of taps in the early afternoon, was the centerpiece of a day of remembrance across the country. Continued on page 6

Obama, standing behind bulletproof glass and before the white oak trees of the memorial, read the Bible passage after a moment of silence at 8:46 a.m. (1246 GMT), when the first jetliner slammed into the north tower 10 years ago. The president, quoting Psalm 46, invoked the presence of God as an inspiration to endure. “Therefore, we will not fear, even though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried

There are around 10 permanent bus stops which is marked to be strategic while the other 14 is portable and ineffective meaning can be moved to a more strategic place. “these portable bus stops were done to know how many people would likely

During the socialisation, this operation of route Batubulan-Nusa Dua will always be evaluated which focussed on the passengers being on the bus stops provided now. Besides that there has been suggestions from the public which could be a consideration in moving the portable bus stops. For example, SMPN 9 Sanur junior high school asked the bus stop to be placed nearby it so the 50 pupils that has been using the service don’t have to walk extra 200 meters to go to their school. “We will quickly coordinate on the technicality in responding the public’s want. The waste which is dumped into the river.

Factories dumping waste to the river Tabanan (Bali Post)—

Numerous factories established at riverside were highlighted again by the members of Tabanan House. One of them was a member of Commission II of Tabanan House, Nyoman Wirama Putra. He said the factories established near the river were prone to dumping waste into the river. Claim of the factory owners if they had processed the wastewater properly was alleged to be only a subterfuge of the management. “Many factories are established at riverside. As implication, their waste will be haphazardly dumped into the river, he protested on Saturday (Sep 10). The accusation quipping about the complaints of residents related to the wastewater of factory and WH[WLOH G\HLQJ QDPHO\ 8' ,QGUD Jaya, located at Batuaji Village, Kerambitan. Other than textile factory, the case at issue was the pig fattening farm at Tunjuk Village, Tabanan. Until this moment, Wirama said, the factory owned by PT Puri Agrindo Indah was complained because it dumped the waste into the river. According to Wirama, the factory had already started to spread northwardly, especially on the hill ranges on the way to Baturiti. As a legislator in charge of licensing issues, this politician from Baturiti deplored the easiness to get

permit for project establishment. ³:H VHH WKDW /LFHQVLQJ 2I¿FH VWLOO issues a permit without comprehensive consideration. It is indicated by permit that did not pass through an in depth assessment, he criticized again. He hoped the permits issued by regency government should consider a long-term environmental impact. When the environment was damaged, people would be the victim of such impact. Moreover, many residents remained to rely on the river for their daily activities, such as for bathing their cattle. This Golkar politician urged the Regency Government through Licensing Office not to pursue revenue only when issuing permit. However, it should also consider the environmental impact. On that account, any complaint about environmental impact would not arise again. According to him,

As reported previously, the dyeing fabric and textile factory DW 8' ,QGUD -D\D %DWXDML 9LOODJH Kerambitan, was complained by residents because its wastewater was allegedly discharged to the local river. As a result, color of the river water was often fickle. Even, it was also occasionally accompanied by yarn waste flowing to the river. However, the manufacturer denied to have disposed the waste haphazardly. It claimed if the waste drained to the river had been neutral and harmless. (udi)

Statement of the Badung Regent, AA Gde Agung, ‘selling out’ the permit for the provision of central parking lot in Kuta poses a highly strategic solution in resolving the congestion problem and making the Kuta area more comfortable. However, a number of parties still question about the willingness of capital owners to invest for the purpose. As known, the development of central parking lot would be faced with land constraints and future business prospects. A legislator of Badung House from Legian, I Wayan Puspa Negara, said on Sunday (Sep 11) that in principle he agreed with the idea as expressed by the Badung Regent. However, building a central parking LQ .XWD ZRXOG EH YHU\ GLIÂżFXOW WR EH XQGHUWDNHQ FRQVLGHULQJ WKH ODQG in Kuta was very limited and expensive. Another reason was that building parking facilities was less attractive to invesWRUV EHFDXVH LW ZDV PRUH SURÂżWDEOH IRU WKHP WR EXLOG VKRS KRXVHV There were other alternatives to break the deadlock of investors, namely government should dare to purchase a land for a central parking space at the price approved by the landowner. According to him, Kuta had no development grand design and it was exacerbated by the lack of government’s indecisiveness in enforcing the licensing rules in particular. “Hence, the development in Kuta is like uncontrollable,â€? he said. Meanwhile, Chairman of the Kuta Village Community Empowerment Agency (LPM), Nyoman Graha Wicaksana, supported the government’s efforts to open a central parking lot in Kuta. He mentioned that some lands in Kuta could possibly be conjured up into a central parking. For example, it was the land in the former location of Bali Anggrek Hotel and other vacant land around Kuta. Regarding the possibility of central parking realization, Graha Wicaksana even mentioned that investors even waited for the government’s commitment, particularly regarding the regulations. He did not want, when the central parking had been provided the regulation even did not allow the operation. On that account, he requested the issue should be discussed further with relevant agencies. (kmb25)

NIAMEY, Niger — A convoy carrying ousted Libyan leader Moammar GadhaďŹ â€™s son al-Saadi has crossed into neighboring Niger, a spokesman for Niger’s government said Sunday, one of the highest-proďŹ le former regime ďŹ gure to ee to the landlocked African nation. Al-Saadi, the fugitive ruler’s 37-year-old son, entered Niger in a convoy with nine other people, said Niger Justice Minister Amadou Morou. The vehicles were traveling south toward the outpost of Agadez, where other eeing Libyan loyalists are believed to be holed up in a hotel. “I wish to announce that one of Gadhafi’s sons — al-Saadi GadhaďŹ â€” was intercepted in the north of Niger by a patrol of the Nigerien military,â€? Morou told

reporters late Sunday. He said al-Saadi “has no status at allâ€? in Niger, indicating that he has not been granted refugee status, which would guarantees him certain rights. Since last week, several convoys carrying senior ofďŹ cials of the former Libyan regime as well as civilians and soldiers have made their way across the porous desert border into Niger. Among them were several of GadhaďŹ â€™s top military ofďŹ cers, including his chief of security and the head of his southern command. Niger has faced increasing scrutiny for allowing the former regime members onto its soil, and al-Saadi’s arrival will likely intensify international pressure on the country to cooperate with Libya’s new rulers. They want all GadhaďŹ â€™s sons — and GadhaďŹ himself, who is on the run — to be turned over for trial.

The oods were triggered by torrential monsoon rains across Orissa state, causing water levels to rise and overow river banks, sparking an operation that saw helicopters drop off emergency food packets to help the stranded. “We are face-to-face with yet another bitter ood that has claimed 18 lives with another six people reported missing,â€? Orissa’s disaster management minister Surya Narayan Patra told AFP.

He said the state government had evacuated tens of thousands of people from their waterlogged homes and was enacting relief measures to help a total of 1.7 million people affected by the oods. Orissa’s special relief commissioner Pradeep Kumar Mohapatra told reporters that access to 877 villages was completely cut off due to rising water levels and that 11,000 houses had been damaged. “The numbers of people affected

KABUL, Afghanistan — A powerful Taliban truck bomb that wounded 77 American soldiers and killed ďŹ ve Afghans outside a combat outpost served as a reminder on Sunday that 10 years after the Sept. 11 attacks, nearly 100,000 U.S. troops are still ďŹ ghting a war that shows no signs of slowing down. No U.S. troops were killed when the massive bomb loaded on a truck ďŹ lled with ďŹ rewood exploded Saturday night just outside the gates of Combat Outpost Sayed Abad in eastern Wardak province. NATO said a protective barrier at the entrance absorbed most of the force of the blast, although the area outside the base was hit hard. OfďŹ cials said the Afghans killed included a policeman and four civilians, including a 3-year-old girl.

Another 17 Afghans — 14 civilians and three policemen — were wounded. The provincial governor said the blast was so powerful it damaged about 100 shops in the nearby Sayed Abad bazaar. Although Saturday’s truck bombing occurred outside the base, the numbers of injuries it caused was signiďŹ cant. Combat outposts usually house about 200 troops. The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack. Earlier, they had issued a statement vowing to ďŹ ght until all foreign troops leave. The radical Islamic movement, which gave shelter to Osama bin Laden and al-Qaida when it ruled Afghanistan, also stressed that it had no role in the Sept. 11 attacks, and it accused the U.S. of using them as a pretext to invade the country. “The Afghans have an endless stamina for a long war,â€? the state-

ment said. “Through a countrywide uprising, the Afghans will send the Americans to the dustbin of history like they sent other empires of the past. The attack occurred just over 40 miles (70 kilometers), or about an hour’s drive, from Kabul in an increasingly lawless district in a key province that controls a strategic approach to the capital. Sayed Abad is seven miles (12 kilometers) east of the Tangi Valley, where the Taliban on Aug. 6 shot down a U.S. military helicopter, killing 30 Americans. Many of the dead belonged to the U.S. Navy’s SEAL Team 6 — the same elite unit that killed bin Laden during a May 2 cross-border raid into Pakistan, where al-Qaida’s leadership was driven. Foreign investors still counting on Indonesia Antara

LONDON - Indonesia still has foreign investor confidence for making investments in the country, Capital Investment Coordinating Agency (BKPM) chairman Gita Wirjawan said.

SURABAYA - A horrific smash between a bus and an overloaded minibus killed 19 people in Indonesia’s east Java province on Monday with police saying they suspected the drivers were speeding.

Mojokerto police chief Prasetijo Utomo said both drivers were killed in the accident, which occurred in Mojokerto district at 03:30 am (2030 GMT). “The majority of the victims, 17 of them, were inside the minibus. One of the victims is a seven-year-

old girl,” Utomo said. “We suspect the bus and the minivan were speeding. And the minivan was over capacity, it should have seated 10 people.” Indonesia has a poor road safety record with drivers frequently flouting the law.

TIMIKA - Rescuers have found the bodies of two pilots, an Australian and a Slovakian, who were killed when their small plane crashed in Indonesia’s remote province of Papua, police said Monday.

Their Susi Air Cessna Grand Caravan plane, which was carrying fuel and food, went down on Friday in Yahukimo district. “The rescue team has found the bodies of the pilots... we plan to evacuate the bodies today,” Papua police spokesman Wachyono said. Thick fog and bad weather had

prevented search-and-rescue teams from getting to the remote crash site earlier. The sprawling Indonesian archipelago relies heavily on air transport and has a poor aviation safety record. Turbulent weather conditions in Papua have caused several air accidents in recent years.

Especially with an economic growth rate estimated to reach 6.5 pct in 2011, Gita Wirjawan said at Indonesian Business Day held at Haus der Commerzbank in Berlin, Counsellor for information, social and cultural affairs at the Indonesian embassy in Berlin Ayodhia GL Kalake told Antara`s London correspondent on Sunday. A similar statement was also made by Indonesian ambassador to the German Federal Republic Dr. Eddy Pratomo, that Indonesia now also G-20 member country, has a favorable economic statistical record with a debt indicator to a GDP ratio of 26 pct, much better than China`s 60 pct. Besides a very good monetary policy in which an interest rate increase is only once in the last several years namely 6.5 pct to 6.75 pct, a policy achievements which had never been made by any other country in Southeast Asia. Indonesia is 46th of 160 countries in the Global Competitiveness World Report. A positive economic condition was one of the considerations of foreign investors to operate in Indonesia, besides national stability, corruption eradication, and bureaucratic obstacles as well as some other supporting factors. The meeting themed “Business Potentials of Indonesian Industries, Food, Health and Machinery Industries”, was addressed by International Cooperation Director General of the Industry Ministry Agus T. Wira Kusuma,

Jochen Sautter of German Center Indonesia, and Dr. Ing Gunadi Sindhuwinata, Commissioner of PT. Indomobil Group in a special session on Automotive Potentials and Engineering Industry. Agus T. Wira Kusuma said that in the last five years Indonesia`s automotive industry had grown 7.5 pct per year, the highest growth rate among other industrial sub sectors in Indonesia. In 2013 and 2014, Indonesia has set a target of producing 1 million cars. Gunadi Sindhuwinata added that the automotive industry contributed 26 pct of Indonesia`s national income. In addition last year the car market had reached 2.3 million in the entire ASEAN region, while the total market of motorcycles in ASEAN reached 10.3 million. In the meantime it had been projected that in 2040 Indonesia will have a motor vehicle market of 250 units/1000 people, both motorcycles and cars. In the meantime, Agus said that Germany is a manufacturer of first class engineering products needed by Indonesia, so that for a business expansion, Indonesia is the right choice. Engineering products are among the 5 biggest imported goods in Indonesia and Indonesia`s engineering product imports from Germany had reached one billion US dollars or 40 pct of the total imports of engineering products from the European Union.

Troops send to quell sectarian clashes Associated Press

AMBON — Indonesia deployed security forces to an eastern region after gangs of Muslims and Christians armed with rocks and machetes clashed in violence that left three people dead and 80 others injured, officials said Monday. The violence broke out in the

Maluku provincial capital of Ambon on Sunday after rumors spread that a Muslim motorcycle taxi driver, who died in a traffic accident, had been killed and tortured by Christians, said Capt. Marinus Djati, the Ambon traffice police chief. Groups of Muslims confronted Christians after the man’s funeral. The two sides traded insults and

later started throwing rocks and swinging machetes, police said. The rioters also set fire to houses, cars and motorcycles despite police attempts to break up them up with warning shots, Djati said. Two of the three people killed were high school students, said Ita Sabrina, spokeswoman at a hospital where many of the victims were

sent. At least 80 people were injured, said Bakrie Asyatri, the local government spokesman in Ambon. More than 200 special forces were being deployed in Ambon to try to bring down tensions, said National Police spokesman Maj. Gen. Anton Bachrul Alam. Indonesia is overwhelmingly

Muslim, but Christians form the majority in parts of Maluku — known as the Spice Islands in colonial times — and other eastern regions. More than 9,000 people were killed in sectarian violence in Ambon between 1999 and 2002 but the area has been largely peaceful since then.

ENP R - The average of foreign tourists length of stay in Bali so far this year fell to 3.4 days from 3. days in the same period last year, an ofÂżFLDO VDLG The decline was due to the growing number of hotels and accommodations in other international tourist destinations although the number of tourist arrivals to Bali continued to increase, Secretary of the Bali chapter of the Indonesian Hotels and Restaurants Association (PHRI) Ferry Markus said here on Sunday. In addition, many tourists visited Bali not only for recreation but also for business so that they shortened their visits to the world-renowned tourist island, he said. “Many Asian and European tourists shortened their length of stay because they came to Bali not only for recreation but also for business,â€? he said. Archeological protection in Bali Archeological protection through maintenance, preservation and conservation, even through reconstruction as well, has turned to be an international problem not only today, but actually in the future. Such matters were indicated by the activities of UNESCO as an international institution, who concerned with the most important of world cultural heritage e.g. archeological remains. UNESCO have done a lot of excellent work, which need a reasonable budgets, expert, equipment etc. and the best example is the safeguarding of Brobudur temple. As the UNESCO member, our governments are concerned and responsible to protect our monuments for our national interest, such as Brobudur temple. Based on the development of archaeological studies and the related VWXGLHV HVSHFLDOO\ LQ ÂżHOG RI DUchaeological protection, now such problems is a technical matter and EHVHG RQ VFLHQWLÂżF FRQVLGHUDWLRQ Facing such problem , Indonesian government have done a number of works e.g the safeguarding of

Among them are a number of Hindu tample, spreated nearly in the whole island, as well as Hindu stastues , inscription etc. As the holy monuments for Balinese society, so the Balinese have the responsibility to take care their monuments as their religious IXQFWLRQ 2IÂżFLDOO\ DUFKDHRORJLFDO protection in Bali is done by Bali

As the governments have a very limited budget for these works, and as the owner of the living monuments, so the Balinese people have their religious tasks and responsibility to protect sacred monuments. In Bali generally each village have three village temples named Pura Kyayangan Tiga e.g Pura Puseh,Pura esa (sometime combined with Pura Bale Agung ) and Pura dalem. Among them

are belonged to archaeological monuments and frequently in these temple a number of archaeological monuments are preserved such as statues, inscription etc. It is important to note here that the unity of the Balinese society is tightly bounded by the village temples and social organization. Based on religious reasons, actuality Balinese society has a strong spirit to keep their monuments in a well condition as holy monuments. Since a very long time the Balinese people have maintained and restored their monuments in a very traditional ways, based on their own religious will and spirit, and for this purpose they collected the materials, even reasonable money from the village members. The village members, especially the skilled members (Balinese, undagi) did the restoration and led by the village leader, without any payment (Balinese, ngayah). This mutual model of works named gotong royong is one of the Indonesian spirits, which has

been developed since the early time until today. It is a remarkable fact since the early time Balinese people have done the archeological protection in their traditional ways, which really should be regarded as a community based conservation. The most important meaning of these facts is the Balinese have done their religious task, which still continued from one generation to next generation and still retained until today. Therefore these facts indicated that the Balinese people from time to time have played important role for protecting their archeological monuments, for worshipping their ancestor’s spirit, the Hindu Trinity as well as their local deities. It is hoped that this religious traditions should be keep in people’s mind and increased, now and in the near future for the safeguarding the archeological monuments and its cultural values. Through this way it is hoped that our cultural identity could be preserved in the people’s mind for facing the forthcoming modern world. %71 'RF

Traders of perforated coin handicraft in Badung Market said that decoration made of perforated coins were in high demand among the local community used to embellish their family temple, a sanctum to worship God and ancestral spirits. Most of the ornaments looked for were lamak and tamiyang that were usually hung in the corners of family temple shrines when welcoming great holidays such as Galungan and Kuningan. “Lamak and tamiyang made of perforated coins are widely sought after by people before Kuningan festivity,” he said. Uluwatu Temple IBP

One of the famous sites that always visit by tourists when holidaying to Bali is Uluwatu. Uluwatu Temple is a Hindu temple set on the cliff bank in south part of Bali Peninsula. It is one of Sad Kahyangan Temple in Bali (six big groups of Bali Temples), located in Pecatu Village, Sub district of South Kuta, and Badung Regency or about 25 Km southerly part of Denpasar town. It is situated on the coral reef sordid to sea about 80 meters above the sea level. It is featured by a small dry forest which is mostly called by Alas Kekeran (interdict forest) which is belong to the temple and dwelt by a lot of monkeys and other animal. Name of Uluwatu was come from the word Ulu meaning the head and Watu meaning stone. Therefore Uluwatu Temple mean the temple built in tip of coral reef. In the right and left of temple building or Pelinggih Ida Bagus

Ratu Jurit located in complex of Uluwatu Temple, there are two stone mangers that look like a boat. When both of it are united, hence it’s look similar to sarcophagus, the famous stone from megalithic era culture. There is archaeology omission coming from 16 centuries in firm of arch or winged entrance gate. Winged entrance gate is one of the scarce archaeology omissions. Winged entrance gate that is existing in Uluwatu Temple (a period of its making) can be compared with the same one located in mosque complex in Sendangduwur Village, Lamongan, East Java. The period of its making is relevant with the year Candrasengkala found at this inscription. Candrasengkala founded in the mosque is written by the wording Gunaning Salira Tirta Hayu meaning year 1483 Saka or 1561 Masehi. If the sarcophagus that existing in Dalem Jurit complex area represents the artifact, hence Uluwatu

Temple represents the place sanctified since era of megalithic culture (About 500 S.M). In papyrus of Usana Bali mentioned that Mpu Kuturan (The Hindu Priest who spread out the Hinduism in Bali) had built a lot of temple in this island and one of them Uluwatu Temple. Implicit at papyrus Padma Bhuwana that Uluwatu Temple draw in the direction that is located in Southwest functioning to worship the Rudra God, one of the god in nine god (Dewata Nawa Sanga). Rudra God is the Deity Siwa as Pemralina or return to provenance. In this papyrus also mention that Uluwatu Temple is the Kahyangan World worshiped by entire Hindu people. Since this area is opened for public, it is visited by many people from all over the world because it has beautiful panorama with spectacular sunset and stunning view of Indian Ocean and deep the cliff bank. It is the perfect to visit in Bali.

‘Contagion’ cleans up box RI‫ۋ‬FH ZLWK ‫ۋ‬UVW SODFH Associated Press Writer

LOS ANGELES — “Contagion” infected enough moviegoers to catch the top spot at the box office. The Warner Bros. pandemic thriller directed by Steven Soderbergh and starring an A-list cast that includes Matt Damon, Kate Winslet, Jude Law and Gwyneth Paltrow coughed up $23.1 million in its first weekend, according to studio estimates Sunday. The film’s contagious opening marked the beginning of the fall movie season by exceeding the studio’s estimates. “I think Steven Soderbergh made a compelling movie that tapped into that fear that many of us have about illnesses, viruses and pandemics,” said Jeff Goldstein, Warner Bros. general sales manager. “It’s like a train or car accident. You can’t look away. You prefer not to think about it, but when it’s presented to you, you want to learn more.” Despite the breakout success of “Contagion,” it was the lowest grossing weekend of the year so far for the film industry, according to Paul Dergarabedian, box-office analyst for Hollywood.com. Dergarabedian said that’s typical for the weekend after Labor Day and expected business to pick up in the coming weeks as the Academy Awards race begins. “There are some great titles that are on the way,” said Dergarabedian. “I see

several promising films — Oscar contenders like ‘50/50,’ ‘The Descendants’ and ‘Ides of March,’ and even potential big moneymakers like ‘Real Steel.’” “The Help,” the acclaimed DreamWorks Pictures drama distributed by Disney about black Southern maids speaking out during the civil-rights movement, slipped to No. 2 with $8.7 million after three straight weeks at the top, bringing its domestic total to $137 million. “Warrior,” the Lionsgate mixedmartial arts drama starring Tom Hardy and Joel Edgerton, punched up a $5.6 million debut in the No. 3 position. David Spitz, head of distribution for Lionsgate, said he expects “Warrior” to mirror the simmering success of “The Help.” “The film has gotten unbelievable reviews,” said Spitz. “The audience reaction we’re getting on the movie is consistent. People like the film. It’s a slow burn. We think we’re going to be in theaters for a long time.”

NEW YORK — Amy Winehouse’s father says he believes she died after suffering a seizure related to alcohol detoxification and “there was nobody there to rescue her.” The soul diva, who had fought drug and alcohol problems for years, was found dead in bed at her London home on July 23. Her family says toxicology reports indicated there was alcohol in her bloodstream but it was unclear

whether this had contributed to her death at age 27. Mitch Winehouse said Friday during a taping of Anderson Cooper’s new syndicated talk show that traces of the prescription drug Librium, which is used to fight anxiety and withdrawal symptoms of alcoholism, were found in her body. “Everything Amy did, she did to excess,” he said on the show, which is to air as Cooper’s debut Monday. “She drank to excess and did detox to excess.” He said he regretted that his daughter — whose most famous song, “Rehab,” has her answering “no, no, no” when told to go to rehab — was trying to kick her alcoholism without a doctor’s help. He said “the periods of abstinence were becoming longer, and the periods of drinking were becoming shorter. It was heading in the right direction.” The singer, whose other hits include “Tears Dry on Their Own,” had suffered seizures during this period and would lose consciousness. Her father admitted he was speculating that this happened on the morning she died and said he should find out more conclusively how she died when a full inquest into her death begins next month.

LOS ANGELES — Andy Whitfield, who played the title role in the hit cable series “Spartacus: Blood and Sand,” has died at age 39, according to representatives and family. Whitfield died Sunday in Sydney, Australia, 18 months after he was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma, manager Sam Maydew told the Associated Press. “On a beautiful sunny Sydney spring morning, surrounded by his family, in the arms of his loving wife, our beautiful young warrior Andy Whitfield lost his 18 month battle with lymphoma cancer,” Whitfield’s wife Vashti said in a statement. “He passed peacefully surrounded by love. Thank you to all his fans whose love and support have help carry him to this point. He will be remembered as the inspiring, courageous and gentle man, father and husband he was.” Andy Whitfield — who was born in Wales and moved to

Australia in 1999 — was a virtual unknown when he was cast as the legendary Thracian slave in “Spartacus,” a role made famous by Kirk Douglas in the 1960 Stanley Kubrick film. The series proved a breakout hit for the Starz network and made waves with its graphic violence and sexuality. Whitfield appeared in all 13 episodes of the first season that aired in 2010, and was preparing to shoot the second when he was diagnosed with cancer. While waiting for Whitfield’s treatment and expected recovery, the network produced a six-part prequel, “Spartacus: Gods of the Arena,” that aired earlier this year with only a brief voiceover from the actor. But in January after Whitfield’s condition grew worse, the network announced that another Australian actor, Liam McIntyre, would take over the role. “We are deeply saddened by the loss of our dear friend and colleague, Andy Whitfield,” Starz President and CEO Chris Al-

brecht said in a statement Sunday night. “We were fortunate to have worked with Andy in ‘Spartacus’ and came to know that the man who played a champion on-screen was also a champion in his own life.” Whitfield’s previous credits included appearances on the Australian TV shows “Packed to the Rafters” and “McLeod’s Daughters.”

CHICAGO — The cartoon character SpongeBob SquarePants is in hot water from a study suggesting that watching just nine minutes of that program can cause short-term attention and learning problems in 4-year-olds. The problems were seen in a study of 60 children randomly assigned to either watch “SpongeBob,” or the slower-paced PBS cartoon “Caillou” or assigned to draw pictures. Immediately after these nine-minute assignments, the kids took mental function tests; those who had watched “SpongeBob” did measurably worse than the others. Previous research has linked TVwatching with long-term attention problems in children, but the new study suggests more immediate problems can occur after very little exposure — results that parents of

young kids should be alert to, the study authors said. Kids’ cartoon shows typically feature about 22 minutes of action, so watching a full program “could be more detrimental,” the researchers speculated, But they said more evidence is needed to confirm that. The results should be interpreted cautiously because of the study’s small size, but the data seem robust and bolster the idea that media exposure is a public health issue, said Dr. Dimitri Christakis. He is a child development specialist at Seattle Children’s Hospital who wrote an

editorial accompanying the study published online Monday in the journal Pediatrics. Christakis said parents need to realize that fast-paced programming may not be appropriate for very young children. “What kids watch matters, it’s not just how much they watch,” he said. University of Virginia psychology professor Angeline Lillard, the lead author, said Nickelodeon’s “SpongeBob” shouldn’t be singled out. She found similar problems in kids who watched other fast-paced cartoon programming. She said parents should realize that young children are compromised in their ability to learn and use selfcontrol immediately after watching such shows. “I wouldn’t advise watching such shows on the way to school or any time they’re expected to pay attention and learn,” she said.

MATSUYAMA, Japan — Takashi Yamada would prefer life without the nearby nuclear power plant. But the 66-year-old retired electronics retailer says, “It is also true we all need it.” Host communities such as this seaside city on the island of Shikoku need the jobs and financial subsidies the plants provide. And Japan’s $5.5-trillion economy needs the energy. Many Japanese have grown uneasy with nuclear power since the March 11 tsunami, which left more than 20,000 dead or missing and sent a plant in Fukushima into meltdown. Anti-nuke protesters took to the streets, and a heated debate ensued over the future of atomic energy. A recent Associated Press-GfK poll found that

55 percent of Japanese want to reduce the number of reactors in the country. Six months later, though, the nation seems to be sticking with nuclear power, at least for now. Unlike Germany, which accelerated plans to phase out atomic energy after Fukushima, Japan shows no signs of doing so. In recent days, utilities began newly mandated earthquake and tsunami stress tests, a first step toward restarting reactors idled for maintenance. “What is the alternative?” asks Fumiko Nakamura, a flower arrangement teacher in Tokyo. She worries about nuclear safety in earthquake-prone Japan but says it will take time to develop other types of energy. “Japan is a resource-poor nation, and we need electricity.”

A US rescue dog searches rubble for survivors in the devastated city of Ofunato, Japan in March 2011.

Scientists on Sunday said they had devised sensors to detect breath and sweat which one day could locate survivors buried under buildings hit by an earthquake or a bomb blast. “This is the first scientific study on sensing systems that could detect trapped people,” said Paul Thomas, a professor at Loughborough University in central England. The sensors sniff out metabolites, the gassy by-products of breakdown mechanisms, which come from breathing, sweating and urinating. Dogs can be trained to detect these compounds, but are

expensive to train, need frequent rest periods and both animal and trainer are exposed to danger during search operations. “A device could be used in the field without laboratory support. It could monitor signs of life for prolonged periods and be deployed in large numbers,” said Thomas. The tests sought to duplicate the conditions of a real disaster, in which eight volunteers spent five six-hour days in the simulation of a collapsed, glassclad, reinforced-concrete building. The compounds secreted by the volunteers body interacted with materials in the debris, and changed with conditions such as humidity,

heat, and wind strength and direction, making the detection process much more difficult. The sensors rapidly detected human-generated carbon dioxide and ammonia in plumes of air that wafted through gaps in the “rubble.” The devices also picked up the scent of other volatile organic compounds cast off by human bodies, such as acetone and isoprene. Intriguingly, there was a marked decrease in ammonia levels when the participants were asleep, but researchers could not explain why. The study appeared in the Journal of Breath Research, published by Britain’s Institute of Physics (IOP).

Those matches are likely to capture the attention of the public and media yet old romantics such as UEFA president Michel Platini are more likely to enjoy the meeting of Czech champions Viktoria Plzen and their Belarus counterparts BATE Borisov in Group H. Plzen’s surprise qualification will be a tonic to Platini who has tried to open up the Champions League to smaller clubs with fewer resources and wants teams to have local identity rather than foreign imports. Far from buying their way to success, Plzen have only four foreign players in their squad, all from neighbouring Slovakia, and stunned Czech football last season by winning their first league title with a team made up of promising youngsters and assorted journeymen. “Some of our players weren’t good enough for other sides, but they showed how well they can play here, said coach Pavel Vrba who took over three years ago. PLAYMAKER HORWARTH

The team revolves around 36-year-old playmaker Pavel Horwarth, who joined three years ago after he was no longer wanted by Sparta Prague and was voted Czech player of the year last season. “The past two seasons with Plzen have been the best of my life. Winning the league with Plzen is my greatest achievement, said the former Sporting Lisbon and Galatasaray player. The city is where Pilsner beer was developed in the 19th century although Vikotria will have to stage matches in Prague, around 90 kilometres away, as their own stadium is still not up to Champions League standards. Seven-times Belarusian champions BATE are making their second Champions League appearance. The initials in their name stand for Borisov Automobile and Tractor Electronics. Founded as a factory side in 1973, they started in the Sovietera Belarus second division and have become a major force locally since the mid 1990s. Like their opponents, they rely largely on home-bred players with only three foreigners -- two Serbs and a Brazilian -- in the squad. Both teams were helped by the qualifying system introduced under Platini in which five group stage places are reserved for champion teams from lower-ranked nations, and the same goes for two of the other debutants Trabzonspor and Romanian champions Otelul Galati. Otelul visit FC Basel in Group C on Wednesday, a match which plays second fiddle to the Benfica-Manchester United meeting at the Stadium of Light. Twice European champions Benfica, who qualified as Portuguese runners-up, are the complete opposite to Plzen, having started both legs of their playoff tie with eight South Americans and no home-based players in their side. Trabzonspor, who initially qualified as Turkish runners-up and were knocked out of the qualifiers by Benfica, were given a second bite of the cherry when champions Fenerbahce were pulled out by the Turkish FA over the country’s match-fixing scandal.

Stosur upsets Williams 6-2, 6-3 LQ 86 2SHQ ‫ۋ‬QDO Associated Press Writer

NEW YORK — Even before she began berating the chair umpire, things were not JRLQJ ZHOO IRU 6HUHQD :LOOLDPV LQ WKH 8 6 2SHQ ¿QDO +HU VWURNHV ZHUH RII WDUJHW +HU So facing a break point at the start of the second set Sunday night, Williams ripped a forehand that she celebrated with her familiar yell of “Come on!” The problem, it turned out, was she screamed as Stosur was reaching for a backhand, so the point wasn’t finished. The chair umpire awarded the point to Stosur, setting Williams off on a series of insults directed at the official, a scene far less ugly than — yet reminiscent of — the American’s tirade at the same tournament two years ago. In the end, Stosur ’s powerful shots and steadiness allowed her to beat Williams 6-2, 6-3 in a surprisingly lopsided upset for her first Grand Slam title. Stosur left the court as the U.S. Open champion; Williams’ night ended with her facing possible disciplinary action. A sampling of what Williams said to chair umpire Eva Asderaki: “You’re out of control.” “You’re a hater, and you’re just unattractive inside.” Asked at her news conference whether she regretted any of her words, the 13-time Grand Slam champion rolled her eyes and replied: “I don’t even remember what I said. It was just so intense out there. ... I guess I’ll see it on YouTube.”

She won’t be the only one, for sure. Stosur probably will prefer to watch footage of some of the points she dominated. “I’m still kind of speechless. I can’t actually believe I won this tournament,” Stosur said later, the silver U.S. Open trophy sitting a few feet away. “I guess to go out there and play the way I did is obviously just an unbelievable feeling, and you always hope and you want to be able to do that, but to actually do it, is unbelievable.” The ninth-seeded Stosur became the first Australian woman to win a major championship since Evonne Goolagong Cawley at Wimbledon in 1980. Stosur received a text from the former player that read: “Twinkletoes, you finally have got what you deserved.” Only 2-9 in tournament finals before beating Williams, Stosur made the U.S. Open the third consecutive Grand Slam tournament with a first-time women’s major champion, after Li Na at the French Open, and Petra Kvitova at Wimbledon. This was only the 27-year-old Stosur’s third title at any tour-level event, and what a way to do it. She took advantage of Williams’ so-so serving and finished with 12 unforced errors to Williams’ 25.

Lukas Verzbicas celebrates with his medal after winning the 2011 ITU Junior Triathlon World Championship held in Beijing Sunday, Sept. 11, 2011.

BEIJING — Lukas Verzbicas kept his promise. Verzbicas won the junior title at the world triathlon championships Sunday, fulfilling his vow to win for his cancer-stricken friend and teammate Kevin McDowell. With a good prognosis after his final chemotherapy treatment Aug. 22, McDowell was at the finish line to cheer as Verzbicas won in 56 minutes, 21 seconds. “I had him in my mind the whole race. I knew I was doing it for him,” Verzbicas said. “It motivated me more than if I was just doing this by myself.” Verzbicas finished 33 seconds ahead of Germany’s Justus Nieschlag, the European junior champion. American Tony Smoragiewicz won the bronze medal, finishing just five seconds behind Nieschlag. “This couldn’t have been a more perfect ending,” said McDowell, who served as an assistant coach to Verzbicas and the U.S. team. “I really believed he could do it and he made it happen.” Verzbicas has been touted as the next great American distance runner, only the fifth U.S. high schooler — and first in a decade — to break the 4-minute mile barrier.

He’d originally planned to spend this summer getting ready for his freshman season at Oregon, but that changed in March after McDowell was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma, a form of blood cancer. The teenagers — Verzbicas is 18, McDowell just turned 19 — have trained together the past five years with the Multisport Madness Triathlon Team, a club team in suburban Chicago. Gifted on their own, they became even better because they pushed each other to improve. Verzbicas was the junior U.S. triathlon champ in 2008, McDowell in 2009. They finished third and fourth at last year’s junior worlds, McDowell completing the sprint-distance course in 52 minutes, 22 seconds. Verzbicas was 14 seconds behind after being assessed a 15second penalty. “You can’t have a bad day, really, unless you’re both having a bad day,” Verzbicas said this summer. So when cancer forced McDowell to give up his dream of winning the world title this year, Verzbicas took it and made it his own. “Last tri tomorrow. It’s been an amazing journey, thanks for everyone’s support this one’s for you @KMcDowell1,” Verzbicas said Saturday on Twitter.

Vettel: most emotional win of the year Monza - Sebastian Vettel said the combination of Red Bull’s previously poor Monza form and the fact that his first career win had come at the same track three years ago with Toro Rosso made his Italian Grand Prix one of the most emotional of his incredible season. The world champion was able to dominate the race once he had overtaken fast starter Fernando Alonso’s Ferrari early on. “Very emotional,” said Vettel. “This circuit means a lot to me and has been very special - my first win was here so when I crossed the line I remembered every single bit. “It’s unbelievable. A circuit that has been tough for us to be competitive and we came back this year and the car was amazing.” Although Vettel was racing by himself for most of the distance, he had a busy first few laps with a three-abreast moment into the first corner with Alonso and Lewis Hamilton, and then a close call with Alonso through Curva Grande as the Ferrari defended just before Vettel’s successful pass. “The start was not that good,” Vettel admitted. “It took me a while to see we were three alongside going into Turn 1. Then after the restart I was able to pass [Alonso]. He didn’t give me much room so I don’t know if he knew I was on that side.” Red Bull had run a short top gear on Vettel’s car for better acceleration out of corners at the expense of top speed - a decision that paid off as he took pole, but was felt by his rivals to be a potential

weak point in the race, though Vettel said his win proved it had always been the right call. “I don’t think we took any gamble today, we took the gamble yesterday in qualifying,” he said. “People saw our top speed was not very high so gears were slightly shorter, so I couldn’t use the speed on the straight, but for the race we were comfortable. “I was able to pass Fernando without DRS but even with DRS it may have been a bit comfortable. All in all we did the right thing, had a great race Red Bull driver car and great speed all the way through.” Vettel can now clinch his second title in Sin- Sebastian Vetgapore in a fortnight if he outscores Alonso by tel of Germany 13 points and Jenson Button and Mark Webber gets emotional by eight points - though this came as a surprise to on the podium after winning the champion. the Italian “Wow! I don’t know. It has been an incredible Formula One year so far to be honest, we have progressed so Grand Prix much as a team, got so much stronger,” said Vetat the Monza tel. racetrack, “We’ll just do Singapore as we used to do all in Monza, the other races - go there and go step by step. “I Italy, Sunday, am looking forward and we’ll see what happens Sept.11, 2011. there.”

Hamilton ‘not happy’ with fourth Lewis Hamilton said he could not be happy with his fourth place at the Italian Grand Prix, having started from the front row of the grid. The McLaren driver lost two places at the start of the race and was stuck behind Michael Schumacher for several laps, unable to pass the German, who has much faster on the straight with the Mercedes.

Hamilton was pleased to get some points in the end, but admitted dropping to fourth was far from ideal. “It was not a great result. I started second and I fell back two places,” said Hamilton. “I’m definitely not happy, but that is motor racing. “I’m happy that I finished and got some points for the team so that’s a good step. I’m okay. We got some points and I

finished the race so I can’t complain really.” The Briton claimed he was slower than Schumacher even when he had his DRS open on the main straight. “I was too slow on the straights. I was just stuck behind him. He was very fast on the straight. He was as fast if not faster than me when I had my DRS engaged on the straight.”
