It could be seen that during December 2011 there were no more positive cases on account of the exposure to H5N1 virus. “Apparently, the existence of the virus has been under control because the absence of positive cases during the December 2011,” said Sumantra. However, it did not necessarily mean if the absence of positive
cases of H5N1 in poultry and humans would bring down the alertness. Sumantra worried if the H5N1 virus re-emerged on entering the season of religious ceremonies in Bali requiring a lot of chicken for mecaru ritual. “High demand for local chicken will make traders supply it with a variety of ways, even by bringing in the chicken from outside. This
must be watched out for. Hopefully, the community can purchase it more selectively and implement the procedures of self-protection against H5N1 virus when processing chicken,” he said. So, when slaughtering chicken, continued Sumantra, people should not forget to wash their hands before and after processing the meat. Continued on page 6
