Keep your pub drug-free The BBPA have announced the launch of a free guide for licensees, highlighting the laws surrounding drugs. “Drugs and pubs: a guide to keeping a drug-free pub” has been produced with input from the Home Office and National Pubwatch and can be downloaded from the BBPA website beerandpub.com Parliamentary Pub Chef of the Year Award 2018 The BBPA Pub Chef awards celebrates Great British cooking in pubs. Your pub chef could be nominated by their MP and have the chance to compete for the Pub Chef and Young Pub Chef of the Year Award 2018! If they win, not only would your chef provide some great press coverage for your pub, but they would be invited to an awards reception in the Houses of Parliament and win a cash prize. Tap into beer sales Tristan O’Hana As you prepare for another busy Cask Ale Week, it’s worth looking at all retail opportunities for inspiration, says Tristan O’Hana, editor of Pub & Bar Magazine. I don’t know about you, but my local off-licence seems to have changed over the past few years. All of a sudden there were benches outside, people drinking in the shop and promotions for various beer tastings and events going on in the coming months. The name ‘off-licence’ is pretty much redundant. The local bottle shop is certainly not what it used to be. All around the UK, independent retailers are catching on to the intrigue and education consumers have around beer. No longer do you pop round the corner to pick up a six-pack – now you choose a selection of beers, take a seat and chat to the owner about what’s coming in next week. Unfortunately for pubs, this is a growing form of competition. However, these bottle shops are also enlightening your potential guests on a category that is only growing in popularity. The pub goer’s exploration of beer is there for you, as retailers, to take full advantage of. Cask Ale Week is fast approaching and as you can read all about in this issue, it brings with it a whole host of beer retailing opportunities. Exmoor Ales Urban Fox What is the inspiration behind Urban Fox? Urban Fox was the brainchild of our Assistant Head Brewer Dan Frye, who, being an American, wanted to bring the taste and style of his homeland’s favourite beers to us here in good old Blighty. His beer is a 4.2% ABV American style IPA, the first beer in our new Exile range – modern beers from an established, multi award-winning, traditional English craft brewery.

What are the main ingredients? Urban Fox is a complex blend of malts and hops that benefits from the late hop addition of two American hops, Cascade and Willamette. What does it taste like? It is amber in colour with an aroma of fresh grassy green hops. Smooth to taste but hoppy with a slight maltiness and pleasant bitterness. The late hop addition also brings out slight citrus and tropical fruit flavours. Who will this beer appeal to? An ale for those that enjoy craft beer, so everyone from ‘city slickers’ to ‘country folk’!

There’s A Beer For That this Cask Ale Week Annabel Smith So, it’s coming to the time of year where we’re just starting to notice that the lights are being switched on a bit earlier each evening, you’re having to pull a jacket on to walk to the pub, and the roads are rammed because the kids are back at school. Does it make me sad that summer’s drawing to a close? Not at all. One of the things I love about living in Britain is the diversity of its weather. The good news is that 82% of licensees report growing cask ale sales. Even more positive is that cask beer drinkers tend to have more disposable income, visit the pub more often than consumers of other drink options and spend more on each visit. In summary, cask ale is good for business! So this September, tap into the cask opportunity by celebrating Cask Ale Week, 21st September – 1st October. From simply shouting about your cask range on social media, to sharing your knowledge during tasting events or hosting a week long Cask Ale Festival, showcase your offering by trying out some of these ideas. Variety – there are more than 140 different beer styles but most people can name no more than five. A mini beer festival is an opportunity to showcase a wider range of styles and enthuse customers. Golden Ale and India Pale Ale are currently big performers. Education – Knowledgeable staff, tasting notes, explanation of style and engaging in beer conversation can result in more sales. Winning with wine Wine is big business, worth £4.1bn1 to pubs. However, with a wider audience interested in this category than ever before, it’s important to offer more than a bottle of house red or white on your wine list. While trusty Pinot Grigio takes the title of the UK’s most popular wine, sparkling wine continues to grow in popularity with a 34%2 increase in on-trade sales. Prosecco continues to drive this trend, however Champagne, Cava and English sparkling wine are all strong contenders on the fizz front. Think about offering a variety of wines which not only cater to the differing palates of red and white drinkers, but also offer different flavour profiles to match different types of wine drinkers. With two main audiences to cater for: Millennials and Generation X it’s important that your wine menu appeals to the needs of both markets as they have wildly differing approaches to wine drinking.

For many, Christmas festivities and bubbly go hand in hand, giving you a prime opportunity to up-sell you sparkling wine offering. Crockery and glassware

As we mentioned on page 14, now’s the time to start thinking about different options for your menus. Why not ask customers what they would like to see served up this season? You could host a survey on social media asking your online communities the dishes they can’t wait to devour. Note – pigs in blankets are non-negotiable Christmas menu classics!

Ensure you’ve got enough crockery and glassware to get you through this busy time of year. Check your stock levels now and replace any chipped or worn plates and bowls, and order in any extra glasses you need to deal with functions – wine and champagne flutes will be in high demand over party season. Delivering a quality experience will keep customers coming back to your pub long after the tree is taken down.

Bookings Once your menu has been chosen, it’s time to shout about it. Consider creating flyers to drop into local businesses promoting your offer, and ensure it’s well advertised on your website with clear instructions on how to book a table. Raising a glass to Poppy Beer Poppy beer, which has raised more than £23,000 for The Royal British Legion in the past two years, is back for 2017. The Eagle Brewery’s 3.6% ABV Poppy Beer will be available exclusively to publicans across the Ei Publican Partnerships estate from the end of October, in advance of Remembrance Day. Brewed with natural mineral water, English Ale yeast, Crystal malt, and Challenger and Fuggle hops, Poppy is a crisp, nutty, amber bitter with great flavour. Try to use Digital & Social Media to show that your pub is a place customers will enjoy the festive season and have a good time. Here are a few simple things you can do in the run up to Christmas to promote your offering to customers online. • Make the most of your header/cover pictures. The header/cover picture is the largest image that appears when a customer visits your social media page. Having an image which relates to Christmas bookings and events will show them as soon as they arrive on your social pages what your Christmas offering is all about. • Plan out a post for each week from now until December about Christmas. Each week, try to reflect something different to build up engagement and interest.

• Have your Christmas menu clearly available on your website. Customers wanting to see the food on offer should be able to find it easily. If it’s not accessible they will go elsewhere. Remember to take this down in the New Year though! • Make sure you are maximising hashtags. Use one to two on Twitter and six to 12 on Instagram. Link your content to as many relevant hashtags as possible to reach the most potential customers. E.g. #Christmasmenu • Use the Live functions of Social Media to talk to your customers. Operating in an environment that carries the added lure of cash, expensive equipment and cellars full of stock sadly increases the risk of break-in’s. Site security and access points Are gates and perimeter security protections kept locked around your property and any outside space? Are there any vulnerable access points to the site or the building? If so, these should be identified and measures put in place to reduce the risk of attracting unwanted attention. Physical security of the building Regularly inspect your doors and windows. Are these fitted with good quality five lever locks? Are all possible entrance points safe and secure? Intruder alarms Alarms provide a deterrent, but they must be regularly maintained. Is there a maintenance contract in place? Does protection extend to cover target areas?

Publicans & pubs in the spotlight A Fundraiser to remember The Whimsey Inn, Willenhall A Remembrance Day parade in November was under threat this year when funding to close the roads was withdrawn. The community and Short Heath British Legion has rallied to raise the needed £4,000, with the Whimsey Inn raising £2,500 for the cause by hosting events, including a fun day with numerous activities in the garden such as stalls, skittles and a tombola. The pub praised the public for their support and dedication to saving the parade, which has gone a long way to meeting the amount needed.

The Britvic Lifting Spirits Award The Keel Row, Seaton Delaval Sharon Herron, landlady of the family-run business The Keel Row, is no stranger to community awards over the past few years. In July, Sharon and her team won the Lifting Spirits Awards, a competition dedicated to searching for those who have gone above and beyond to lift the spirits of the local community. Run by the Morning Advertiser and Britvic, this is the first year the nationwide awards have been held. The Keel Row made it to the final six after going through three rounds, winning

a framed certificate, £1,000 to go towards a favourite charity and 50 cases of Britvic products. A well-deserved result for a fantastic team!

Successful skydive for local girl with cancer The Old Ship, Bridlington Landlord Rob Donaldson and a member of his team, Jess Pickering, took part in a skydive to raise money for a local girl who suffers from a rare type of cancer. With perfect weather at Skydive GB in Grindale, the skydive took place in June, with the duo raising £2,000 on behalf of the six year old. Jess’ grandparents came along to support this brave act for such a worthy cause.

Annual Pub on the Green Event The Cottage Loaf, Loughton On the 16th July, John Walsh and his team hosted their annual Pub on the Green event for the fourth year. Working with the local council, The Cottage Loaf welcomed over 1,000 people and even a little bit of rain couldn’t dampen anyone’s spirits. Featuring a range of stalls, food and drink, and attractions such as horse riding, music and a fun fair, the day was followed up with a band and several supporting acts before a DJ finished the evening off. The Pub on the Green event is run for the community and to help raise money for charity, and it does a great job at bringing the local area together for a fun day.
