Business news Motion Picture Licensing Company (MPLC) Companies or licensees may have received a letter from an organisation called the Motion Picture Licensing Company (MPLC) seeking copyright licence payment for televisions operated in their pub estate or individual pub, arising from legal changes as a result of the Murphy case in 2014. Following confusion over what is liable for payment and what is not, BBPA has met with MPLC to clarify the situation and advises the below: he MPLC licence fee does not apply to live 1. T broadcasts. So, if the televisions in your pub(s) only show live TV sport (for example Sky or BT Sport) or rolling news (such as BBC News Channel, Sky News) you do not have to pay this licence fee, subject to point 3 below 2. T he licence does apply to the vast majority of films and television programmes. So, if you show films or TV shows in your pub(s), you must pay this licence fee. This also applies to any televisions in staff areas, breakrooms etc. 3. T o prevent liability for the fee, you must have a mechanism in place to ensure that if you are showing live sport or news only, no films or TV programmes are inadvertently shown to the public. An example would be live broadcast

of horse racing or tennis on terrestrial TV, the broadcast ending and the television showing a non-live programme after the sport. A protocol must be in place to ensure the TV is switched off after the live content has ended. s with Sky and BT, MPLC are using a company 4. A called FACT to check that pubs are not showing their products illegally, so you need to ensure that you have evidence a robust procedure is in place so that the television only shows sport and news, which are not covered by this tariff. 5. F or those who do pay the tariff, please note the square meterage calculation is for the area the TV is in, not the whole pub. BBPA has agreed a pause in MPLC contacting pubs to pay for a licence to give them an opportunity to respond to its questions. They also asked that they make clear in their future communications that pubs that only show sport and/or news and have the ability to ensure film/TV shows are not also shown are therefore not liable for the tariff. For further information and guidance on this matter, please contact Jim Cathcart at jcathcart@beerandpub.com

Savour the support

Staying vigilant Following the devastating attacks in London and Manchester, businesses need to be more alert than ever for suspicious behaviour. BBPA Chief Executive Brigid Simmonds commented; “The appalling attacks must serve as a reminder that it is important for pubs to be vigilant to the threat of terrorism. We do urge pubs to be vigilant against the threat of terrorism. Pubs should monitor advice from the police, brief staff, ad have terrorism as part of their risk assessment of the premises. “Safety should be regularly reviewed, and issues to consider are any weaknesses in a CCTV system, and how you would respond to a threat, such as a suspect package or suspicious item, search plans and evacuation plans. We will be seeking to work with the Metropolitan police and other partners to ensure that the guidance available for pubs bars and restaurants, and our customers, is as effective as it can possibly be, in the face of these evolving threats.” Visit the BBPA website to download its free, risk assessment guidance document, Managing Safety in Pubs & Bars.

Ei Group Debit Card Charges Following the introduction of new EU legislation surrounding interchange rates, which has affected all UK card providers, a charge for all Debit Card payments will be implemented from Monday 31st July 2017. A handling fee of 0.15% will be added to any payment a publican makes to the Group by Debit Card and an invoice raised to their account for the charge incurred. For example, a payment of £1,000 will incur a charge of £1.50 making the total amount to be charged £1,001.50. Charges can be avoided by paying by Direct Debit. Please speak to your relevant Credit Controller.

Tristan O’Hana If an opportunity arises to promote all that is good about the pub and bar industry, embrace it, Tristan O’Hana, Editor of Pub & Bar Magazine, comments. I was working the week after the political parties of the United Kingdom released their manifestos for what proved to be a fascinating General Election. As these manifestos were published, the responses from the trade bodies that represent our industry dropped into my inbox, one by one. You have to hand it to them (the trade bodies, not the political parties) – the speed at which they send out supportive messages that detail reaction and required action is highly impressive. Here are organisations that exist to support you and your businesses – that can only be a good thing. So when we learned of National Pub Fortnight, and the inaugural campaign launched, we thought it was a pretty great initiative. Through a PR campaign, free pint promotions, POS kits and extra operational support, you will be faced with two weeks of busy trading and positive attention around your venues and industry. The more pubs that embrace it, the more successful it will become. If this leads to more customers walking through those pub doors, then it’s mission accomplished.

What is the inspiration behind Purple Moose? As a young man, owner Lawrence Washington spent a lot of time walking in Scotland. A keen home-brewer, he took inspiration from beers of that area and made them his own. Purple Moose’s first brew was on 14 June 2005 and now produces over 1 million pints of beer a year, delighting fans across the world. What are the main ingredients? Cascade hops with the added indulgence of real dried elderflowers. What does it taste like? Incredibly refreshing. The beautiful aroma and sweetness from the real elderflower is balanced perfectly by the hoppy dryness of the Cascade hops. Who will this beer appeal to? For those who love their beers on the hoppy side & with a complexity of flavours, it particularly appeals to the younger drinker and both men and women alike.

Camerons Brewery Röad Crew

TO ORDER SEE PAGE 50

What is the inspiration behind Röad Crew? Camerons teamed up with legendary rock band Motörhead to create an exciting new collaboration beer. The name of the brew was chosen from the Motörhead fan favourite ‘(We Are) The Road Crew’, which appears on the 1980s ‘Ace of Spades’ album and was penned as a tribute to the band’s dedicated team of roadies. What are the main ingredients? A combination of pale ale and wheat malts make up this brew, including Galena, Bramling Cross, H. Mandarina Bavaria and Huel Melon hops. What does it taste like? Röad Crew is an American session pale ale packed full of hoppy citrus and blackcurrant flavours, delivering a crisp, refreshing, superior taste to celebrate the spirit of the song and those who inspired it. Who will this beer appeal to? Fans of the band or rock 'n' roll music, but behind the name is a great session pale ale!

Summer sips Annabel Smith Our small island is not renowned for its sunny weather. We’re attuned to rain, fog, gale force winds and icy winters. Which is why we treasure the few weeks of glorious sunshine we do get during July and August. We relish stepping out of the front door without a jacket, and walking down a suburban street on a hot summer’s night as the aroma of barbecued food pervades the night air. A dose of hot weather makes us happier, sunnier natured and more sociable. We want to get out, meet friends and savour a cold beer in the pub, preferably with some seasonal food. Whether your choice of tipple is a crisp cold lager like Sol, a shimmering golden ale such as Thwaites Wainwright or Butcombe Gold, or a spritzy haze of Blue Moon Wit, all these beers adapt brilliantly to summer fayre. With National Pub Fortnight falling during July and August, and events being held up and down the country, make a feature of matching your beer range with your menu. Lagers go hand in hand with ribs, burgers and spicy chicken wings grilled on a barbecue; pale ales complement pub snacks so think picnic food – scotch eggs, sausages, pulled pork rolls. Wheat beers are marvellous at cutting through the zingy spices in Thai, Vietnamese and Mexican dishes, as well as a natural complement to shellfish and salads. Let’s make the most of our very short summer season and celebrate this warm climate with a cool beer. You can email Annabel your questions direct at beersommelier@eigroupplc.com r simply tweet the name of a food o to @BeerForThat with the hashtag #BeerMatch for an instant reply.

eilive 2017... over and out for another year

Across April and May, eilive travelled the length and breadth of the country, bringing publicans and suppliers together to meet face to face and share best practice ideas for increasing profit and driving footfall. With exclusive money-saving deals on offer, first sight at innovative new product ranges and quality time to talk to industry experts, eilive 2017 delivered businesschanging experiences for the hundreds of publicans that attended. Don’t just take our word for it. If you were unable to attend this year's shows, here’s what you missed…

“We brought loads of new products to the show which publicans got a first look at, including new dispense systems. We’ve had a chance to talk face to face with publicans about innovative ideas for driving footfall and increasing stay time in their pubs.” Heineken

“We’re working on a number of huge projects including some exciting new product launches. We’ve brought these with us to the eilive 2017 shows for publicans to get a first chance look at how these can radically improve their food offer to make it tastier, more convenient and better value for money.” Stuart Finn, Big Al’s Foodservice

“We’ve been working hard over the past year developing new tools and initiatives such as the new Publican Channel, Pub Principles and National Pub Fortnight, that we’re delighted to have launched at the show. These digital tools and marketing initiatives will help Ei Publican Partnerships publicans drive footfall and create exceptional guest experiences.” James Armitage, Ei Group

“The shows are a great opportunity to meet with suppliers and discover the latest trends and products that help me grow my business. The Booker stand really stood out for me this year, along with other stands that I was very impressed with. I think it's a great day out for everyone in our industry, and you get to meet all kinds of interesting people.” Chris Holliday, The Castleford

c e r a h t f t o t t n r i e n p d aT As craft beer continues to gain momentum, we explore what type of customer is driving this trend, and why it’s so important to your business. “If you think craft beer drinkers are all tattooed, bearded hipsters, think again,” explains Rod Jones, from Meantime Brewing Company. “In pubs everywhere a wide range of people are enjoying craft beer amid huge consumer interest.” “There is no stereotypical craft beer drinker, but they all share a love of innovative and creative beers

and they are happy to pay more for it. Craft beer is right in line with the trend towards drinking less volume, but trading up in quality, and interestingly, it seems that many women are more attracted to craft beer than cask ale or the big brands.” Beer sommelier Jane Peyton concurs. “Craft beer is shorthand for bold flavours, innovation, exploration, and excitement. The days of boring brown bitter as the dominant pub beer style are ending. Look at the huge international brewing corporations on a buying spree for leading independent craft brands. You’ll profit from the craft craze by creating a community of drinkers who are willing to spend on great beer. In summary, ignore craft beer at your peril.”

Join the Craft Club There’s no denying that craft beer represents a significant revenue stream for your business. With this in mind, we’ve launched the Craft Club, to help you tap into the trend. What is the Craft Club? • Opportunity to add craft beer to your range, exclusive to ei publican partnerships and supported by Meantime

Is it right for your pub? • Do you have a customer demand for craft beer?

• A regular rotation of up to 15 craft beers every four months from a diverse range of breweries

• Can you upsell to your customers to pay for a premium product? (minimum suggested RSP £4.50)

• Free to join including installation of the dedicated “Craft Tap”

• Will you be able to cover the minimum throughput of 2 tubs per week?

• Access to a range of new and exclusive craft ales and supporting free POS

Celebrate cider In 2015, on-trade cider sales reached a whopping £1.8bn. Since then, the drink has continued to grow in popularity, with a number of choices for customers including craft, fruit and classic cider options. Each represents a huge opportunity for you as a publican, with cider coming into its own as summer approaches. Aside from offering great tasting cider, if you're planning a festival serving up great food and giving customers a day to remember will encourage them to stay in your pub even longer.

Serve up success Thatcher’s recently paired up with Suzy Atkins,

Dry or sweet? The important rule is always balance ‘like with like’. So dry drinks should go with savoury food – they will taste harsh alongside sugary dishes. Sweet drinks work with desserts and also cheeses and pates.

can help bring out the very best in both.”

Richness and body Some ciders are stronger, more powerfully flavoured than others. Make sure if you have a rich cider, you match it to a correspondingly no-nonsense dish. Try with stronger cheeses, or red meats like beef or lamb.

Martin Thatcher

Meet the Maker Meet Martin Thatcher, fourth generation cider maker at Thatchers, talks to deals&ideas magazine about his passion for apples. “When it comes to our ciders, the apple is king at Myrtle Farm. We have been crafting our very special style of cider in Somerset for four generations, since our founder, William Thatcher started to create his delicious blends back in 1904.

At Thatchers’ Myrtle Farm around thirty different varieties of apple are grown for cider. But that’s not all. In our very special Exhibition Orchard, there are 458 apple trees of different varieties, many of which are older, classic varieties. Some of these classic varieties are now being grown in a special trial for our ciders of the future, together with newer varieties such as Gilly, Jane and Angela.

Since then, we have kept on growing our passion for apples – from the orchards we care for through to the ciders we lovingly craft.

From orchard to glass our passion is to bring our customers the very best cider. Understanding apple varieties and how they each bring their special character to a cider is such an important and valuable skill that we’re delighted to share through our range of characterful Thatchers ciders.”

Knowing the complexities of each of the apple varieties we choose for our ciders means that we can bring out the very best in taste and character. From the Jonagold apple we choose for Thatchers Haze, to the Somerset Redstreak apple in Old Rascal, each does its own very important job.

Chin chin to gin! Gin is fast becoming the tipple of choice for a whole new generation of spirit drinkers. So whether you’re serving it with ice and a slice, or are thinking about extending your range, it’s time to join the gin revolution! Gin's recent surge in popularity led to The Wine and Spirit Association declaring 2016 as 'the year of gin', with the category exceeding sales of £1 billion both on and off trade across the year. Put simply, selling gin will help to drive footfall and boost spirit sales! Indications show around 100 new distilleries have opened in the UK since 2014 – no doubt driven by the thirst customers have for craft spirit offerings, shunning mainstream brands in favour of artisan and locally produced products. Similar to stocking locally produced foods, customers' desire for provenance lends itself well to spirits. Different distilleries produce an array of flavour experiences – from the floral, citrusy flavours of Adnams Copper House Gin to the warm, spicy notes of William Chase, there’s a gin solution for your pub, whatever your customer demographic.

Mix it up Key to the rise in gin sale… pairings with premium tonics. From Fentimans to Fever Tree, a new wave of mixers that complement the botanicals and individual flavours in gins has set this spirit apart from the rest. Consider using different garnishes to finish off your pour.

Food focus: Seasonal servings “My name is Paul Farr and I'm the new Head of Food at Ei Group. Over my many years within the hospitality industry, I have worked in pubs, hotels, production kitchens, a scampi van – and I’ve even cooked for Kings and Queens! In that time I have learnt so much, and with the help and support of our key suppliers, I hope to share industry news, food knowledge, ideas and market leading trends with you each issue, which I hope will inspire you to get cooking. Effective menu planning is essential to make your food business thrive. This month, we’re focussing on autumnal menu planning. The first step to any menu development process is to really understand your customers and what they want when they come to your pub. As we head towards the colder months, this will include heartier, comforting dishes. Create something your customers will find exciting and enticing by using a range of on-trend and locally sourced ingredients on your menu. It could be as simple as serving seasonal veg from the local farm. Although it is good to be different, everyone likes the classics so try to find a balance between the two at this time of year. Pies, stews and richer, gamier meat dishes will be order of the day.

18 | seasonal servings deals & ideas

Keep it small. A simple, concise menu is easier for everyone. Your customers will like it, you won't have to buy lots of different ingredients and your kitchen team will be able to focus on quality over quantity. Reduce wastage by having dishes with several of the same ingredients. Less waste, less prep and less equipment all equals better profits, as well as better prices and overall experience for your customers.”

My trend predictions for autumn 1. Pies the limit; this classic dish should be packed with hearty ingredients. Pieminister is just one supplier we’re working with who nails this trend. 2. Celebrating the ‘Best of British’. From Fish & Chips to Sunday Roasts, our national cuisine is still a firm favourite with customers. 3. Chips, but not as we know them. Load this low cost favourite with toppings. I’ve heard it described as ‘The British Nacho’!

The big breakfast Breakfast is big business, with £76million spent on eating breakfast or brunch out of home everyday1. Pair this with the nation's love of café culture and it becomes important to offer food and drink across different day parts, including hot beverages and early morning menu options to tap into this sizeable revenue stream. “The demand is there,” explains Paul Farr, Head of Food at Ei Group. “You might not necessarily be serving up cereal at 7am, but consider putting your hat in the ring and compete with high street chains by offering dishes more suited to a leisurely breakfast and brunch experience over the weekend. Bottomless brunches have seen a massive surge in popularity, for example. You can serve up a breakfast dish with a glass of prosecco or a bloody mary for a fixed price to tap into the trend. “Monday to Friday, a decent hot beverage offering could be enough to start attracting customers earlier in the day.” Dominic Chapman, Chef Proprietor at The Beehive in White Waltham, agrees. “Serving breakfast and brunch are both excellent ways of increasing revenue in any pub. Pubs are naturally very sociable places, so a sharing option is a really good way to encourage group dining. “We recently worked with tea brand Tetley to create a recipe idea to help pubs break into the breakfast trend. The end result was a sharing brunch platter, which gives customers the option to pick and mix a variety of different items to create a grazing board of breakfast favourites. This could include anything from crispy bacon and locally sourced sausages to avocado and roasted tomatoes.”

Tetley shares its top tips on developing a breakfast offering in your pub. • Open your doors to the local community and host regular breakfast events in your pub. From Toddler Groups to Tea Mornings, early morning meet ups have real appeal. • Hot beverage sales in pubs are on the rise. It’s important to offer customers something that stands apart from what they can serve at home, so ensure that you really personalise customer experiences; for example asking them how they take their tea and offering up a range of fruit and herbal blends. • T hink about your customer demographic. Are you in a busy area that might benefit from serving up hot drinks or breakfast to go? Do you have the passing trade to profit from serving breakfast seven days a week, or would a Saturday/Sunday offering be more cost effective?

62% of consumers

will drink tea with food, more than any other hot beverage3

Summer’s in full swing With ‘staycations’ becoming more popular and the UK attracting more and more holidaymakers from abroad, tourism is a massive opportunity to attract visitors to your pub. With the school summer holidays fast approaching, now’s the time to attract families looking for somewhere to spend a sunny – or not so sunny – day. King of the castle A massive draw for parents and children alike is a child-friendly area where little ones can enjoy themselves while the adults eat, drink and relax. If you’ve got a pub garden, a play area can make all the difference when it comes to enticing families, and encouraging them to return. Check out the emarket for play area equipment that will elevate your offer. Come rain or shine With six weeks to entertain their children, parents may struggle to find something new to do everyday, as well as find the purse strings a little tighter than usual over the school holidays. If your pub can offer weatherproof activities, at no extra cost, Mum and Dad will be inclined to spend their hard-earned cash on food and drink – resulting in profit into your till. Deals on food and drink, such as kids eat free with a full paying adult or free soft drink with every kids’ meal will definitely attract notice. Kids activity packs and placemats are available through the emarket, and are an easy and cost effective way to keep children happy during meal times.

Triple your efforts Bank holidays give you thrice the opportunity to profit from weekend trade. From beer and cider festivals, to live entertainment like comedy acts or bands, customers will be in the mood to celebrate that extra day off. Why not check out our feature on page 12 for inspiration on hosting your own cider festival? Tourist trap UK temperatures may not reach the dizzy heights of the Med, but over the last few years there’s been a boom in holidays taken at home. Pair this with tourists visiting from abroad, and you’ve got a one-way ticket to success. If you’re in an area that attracts visitors, passing trade will increase over the summer months. Events like the National Pub Fortnight running from the 22nd July to 6th August, are another great way to attract additional custom, celebrating the very best of British pub culture.

Football’s coming home It’s coming back to our screens – August sees the return of the Premier League. As we approach the end of a summer without football, fans’ taste buds will be tingling at the prospect of a season where their team could be pushing for the title, staving off relegation or chasing down that elusive cup run. Whatever their ambition, set your stool out for this opening weekend and ensure they head to your pub to watch the action unfold all season. Likely to attract big crowds, deals on bottled beers and ales will keep fans long after the final whistle. Check out our pick of the best products to stock your bar with on page 44. A packed pub means plenty of hungry punters to feed. Quickto-prepare food is ideal for such occasions – you avoid built up

queues and unmanageable order backlogs and it also means fans won’t miss any of the action waiting at the bar. Plenty of fans will fancy starting the season with a flutter, so if you’re near a betting shop, advertise the games you’ll be showing outside to attract fans from the bookies into your pub.

September sees the World Cup qualifiers take place – let fans know you’ll be televising these so they know to come back. Have a look at the next issue of deals&ideas for some ideas on making the most of these fixtures.

Day in the life of... Noel McMahon, Cellar Keeper Of The Year 2016, and 2015 The Nightingale, Wanstead What time does the day start for you? Well, the day starts the same every day of the week – a bright and early start at 6:45 to let in Kasia who helps me with some aspects of running the pub and we’ll kick off the day by sharing a pot of coffee and croissants.

How has the pub culture changed since The Nightingale opened in 1987? The introduction of an amazing portfolio of real ales and a wide selection of wines, plus a huge expansion of the food section have changed the reasons people visit, which, in turn, has an effect on the culture.

What would you say is an average day at The Nightingale? After the morning briefing, I’ll work through staff rotas, till reconciliation and the like. Then the fun begins – we check for upcoming functions and get ready to welcome our first customers. The hours run out very quickly from there on in! After 50 years in the business I can honestly say no two days are the same but I’ve always stuck to the same adage – take it one day at a time.

You’ve been crowned Cellar Keeper of the Year, what’s your best bit of cellar keeping advice or best practice tip? Visit your cellars more often! Treat your cellar and cold room like a food area in terms of hygiene. If you have a visit from an environmental health officer, it will be treated as such. If you were only able to stock one drink in your cellar, what would it be? My heart screams real ale but the businessman in me says lager – you just can’t argue with the sales!

Want to learn more about running a succesful business? Don't miss our Gaming machines pub principles guide available from the publican channel.

The knowledge How gaming machines can boost your business eilive 2017 The Gaming and Media team, along with a selection of gaming suppliers, attended all eilive 2017 road shows to showcase the benefits of gaming machines, jukeboxes and other equipment to publicans. The shows proved a great success with over 500 publicans registering interest in gaming machines and thousands of pounds of prizes given away!

How you can make the most of gaming machines If you are still undecided on whether or not to have gaming machines in your pub, then the following points should help you make an informed decision: • AWP’s (Fruit Machines) take on average £825 per week nationally. This is then split between the gaming operator, the publican and Ei Group with a 20% MGD to be paid • 83% of machine income is from AWP’s, 8% from pool and 9% from other machines (quiz, music etc) • The cost to power a fruit machine is as little as 14p per day for the electricity

32 | gaming deals & ideas

Although AWP’s are vital for the majority of income, machines such as pool and jukeboxes can enhance a site’s overall offer.

Maximising profits Already have machines? Try these tips to help boost profits and maximise the income of your gaming offer: • Changing poor performing quiz machines (SWP’s) with a profitable digital AWP machine, such as the King of Games, can increase your machine profit by hundreds of pounds per month • Refilling machines – note acceptors will turn off if the £1 coin ‘hopper’ falls below £125. 90% of cash put into machines is notes! Having an inactive note acceptor can cost hundreds of pounds per week in profit! • Adding an additional fruit machine almost always increases overall machine take. We can offer preferential terms for a trial period to demonstrate the benefit of more machines! If you need any more information or have any questions regarding Gaming and Media, please contact your operator, your regional manager or email GamingandMedia@eigroupplc.com

Your summer social strategy With summer about to start, it’s time to get a strategy in place to make the most of all that sunshine…

Get the shots in

Market your menu

Make sure you’re making the most of the best light of the year by getting a professional photoshoot done.

If you’ve got events planned for the balmy evenings ahead, make sure you get word out in plenty of time.

It’s a worthwhile investment to get 50+ excellent images of your pub and products that you can use all year round. A professional shoot will give you images that have a high-enough resolution to look good on your website and stand out from all the smartphone images on social media.

Your website should be the first place you update, as people who aren’t already customers are most likely to look on Google for inspiration. Then update your social platforms, so nobody can miss it.

Any photographer will tell you natural light is the best for photography, plus your hanging baskets and flowerbeds will be full of colour. Also get chef to cook up a couple of your best dishes to include in the shoot. Far from being a waste of money or ingredients, this is an investment in marketing. The same goes for drinks – if you offer summer cocktails (Pimms anyone?) then get one made up for the shoot. your_pub

Summer food menus and cocktail lists should be uploaded to your website and social channels for maximum impact, highlighting any special offers you have on as well. Who doesn’t love a BBQ menu?

Competitions Think about competitions you can run that are different to the usual ‘like & share’ type we all see in our newsfeed. Getting customers to check-in or post pictures to your Facebook wall for you to pick a weekly winner is a great way to boost engagement on your page. Publicans & pubs in the spotlight Ei Publican Partnerships competition winner The Selkirk, Tooting James Corbett, his general manager Kerry Pringle and their team were named winners of the year-long Ei Publican Partnerships marketing competition in April this year. Over 100 pubs in the Greater London region competed, with the aim to see who could sell the most beer after receiving top-notch marketing training from Paul Lillicrap. The Selkirk not only sold the most beer, but the team were commended for their community spirit throughout the competition. They were rewarded with 116 gallons of beer!

Loved landlady honoured by customers Horns Tavern, West Norwood In a lovely tribute to the landlady of Horns Tavern, Alison White was honored by her customers with an engraved glass trophy, flowers and £500 in recognition of being the longest serving landlady in West Norwood. She is known as the heart and soul of the pub, which has wonderful Trip Advisor comments about the great atmosphere and friendly staff. After being a successful landlady for 17 years, it’s a fantastic, thoughtful way to show exactly how much Alison means to the community.

New pub defibrillator unveiled The Chestnut, Worcester A community pub run by Colin Robinson, The Chestnut regularly runs initiatives for good causes, such as inviting the homeless and elderly people who live on their own to the pub on Christmas Day each year. The latest cause was to raise money for a defibrillator, which would be positioned in Colin’s pub garden for easy access for the pub and the local community. Having achieved his goal, Colin unveiled his newest addition to The Chestnut on St George’s Day, along with members of the local emergency services and the local MP.

Winnings enable door to door service Cleveland Bay, Redcar It’s fantastic to see publicans being rewarded for giving so much to the community, but when they give their reward to the community too, that’s incredible. Beating 500 other entries, Russ and Sarah Clark from Cleveland Bay have won both the National and Regional prizes in the Community Hero Awards 2016. While that’s great news in itself, with the winnings the couple have bought a seven seater car to act as a free door to door service for elderly and less able customers to help them get out more and socialise.

Music Makeover competition runner up The Anchor Inn, Wingham In April this year, the much-loved community pub in Wingham was announced as runner up in PRS for Music’s national Music Makeover competition, not only being awarded a prestigious music industry award, but receiving an incredible £5,000 to invest in new sound equipment. The Anchor Inn competed with over 300 music pubs and venues in the UK, but the judges were particularly impressed by the diversity of their music events and the way the pub supports touring artists, international acts and local musicians. The prize money will go towards improving ‘The Anchor Arts Centre’, a 100-capacity venue situated in a previously defunct function room in the pub’s building.

Practising the poker face

Team tours Greene King Brewery

Newton Arms, Doncaster Dun Cow, Stevenage Vegas 100, run by Redtooth Poker, is a year-long search to find the top pub poker players in the UK who stand a chance of becoming the next UK Pub Poker Champion by playing against each other at the Vegas 100 National Final in the US!

The Carpenters Arms, Harpenden Last winter, Greene King ran a promotion on its Abbott Ale, with participating pubs entering a prize draw when they bought a 9g cask of the beer. Prizes ranged from branded hand pulls, dual branded tankards and brewery tours. Tony and Maria Hedigan from The Carpenters Arms won the whopping prize of a special behind the scenes brewery tour in Bury with John Bexon, Greene King Master Brewer! As Harpenden’s smallest pub and a loyal Abbott stockist, this was a great opportunity for the team.

The 6th annual Vegas 100 trip takes place between the 25th May and the 2nd June this year, and out of 100 qualifying players flying to Las Vegas to compete, there are two Ei publicansin the mix. Daniel Watson from the Newton Arms in Doncaster and Mark Bates from The Dun Cow in Stevenage will take on the challenge of proving they are next UK Pub Poker Champion – good luck lads!

NEW RANGE AVAILABLE NOW

TASTING NOTES Aviation Gin Aviation explores the rich, floral and savoury notes of lavender, cardamom, and sarsaparilla.

Martin Millers Gin Flavoured with Tuscan juniper, cassia bark, angelica, Florentine orris, coriander, Seville citrus peels, cinnamon and liquorice root.

2. Whitley Neil Gin

Brockmans Gin Aromatic, almost gingery orange flavour, which marries with the softer, more rounded harmonies of blueberries and blackberries.

Martin Millers Gin Wetsbourne Strength Whilst using the same botanicals as the original, there's more Juniper, Cassia, Liquorice and Coriander in this pour.

3. Copper House Gin

Bulldog Gin A delicious English gin made with poppy, dragon eye, lotus leaves, citrus, almond, lavender and 12 other botanicals.

Monkey 47 Schwarzwald Dry Gin Predictably complex, this is a robust and powerful Gin with plenty of spice, fruit and herb flavours.

4. Brokers Gin

Opihr Oriental Spiced Gin It's slightly sweet, with a spicy heat that builds gently, before fading into a long, soft finish of cardamom and juniper.

5. Sipsmith Gin

Deaths Door Gin Made with a base spirit of wheat from Washington Island and malted barley from Wisconsin, as well as a small selection of botanicals. Fifty Pounds Gin Opens with juniper, followed by lemon, coriander and angelica. Hint of spice, with citrus blossoming in the middle. Dry, palate cleansing finish.

Portobello Gin A classic London Dry that has a very rich texture and the most gorgeous finish of liquorice and nutmeg.

Four Pillars Rare Dry Gin This rare Dry Gin is made in a small distillery in Yarra Valley, Australia.

Star of Bombay Gin All the intensified traditional characteristics of a London Dry Gin, with the exotic notes of citrus bergamot and Ambrette seeds.

Four Pillar Bloody Shiraz Gin Aromatically it has fresh pine needles, citrus and spice, and a clear peppery, dense raspberry character. The palate is lovely and sweet.

Tanqueray Rangpur Gin A combination of juniper, coriander, bay leaves and ginger. Clean and transparent with a rich, refreshing taste.

Gin Mare Gin Distilled in a fishing village near Barcelona, its primary botanicals are Arbequina olives, thyme, basil and rosemary.

Warner Edwards Elderflower Gin A beautifully balanced gin that is smooth, sweet and delicately fragrant with summer elderflower.

Langley's No.8 Gin Up front juniper and coriander are complimented by citrus zest.

Warner Edwards Rhubarb Gin Voluptuous on the palate with a sweet and tangy royal rhubarb explosion.

With a distinctive floral aroma, don't miss rich notes of juniper and citrus, pot pourri and exotic spices. Made with six carefully chosen botanicals, this gin is elegant, approachable, charged with juniper, rich with floral and citrus notes. A delicious lip-smacking gin at a great price. Clean, fresh and a step up in quality from run-of-the-mill juniper concoctions. Floral, summer meadow notes, followed by mellow rounded juniper and zesty, citrus freshness. 6. William Chase GB Gin Juniper buds and berries are added to Chase Vodka, along with wild botanical infusions including cinnamon, nutmeg and more. 7. Beefeater Gin Classic London Gin aromas. The clean citrus aroma of Seville orange peel develops into more complex notes from juniper and coriander. 8. Beefeater 24 Gin Fragrant notes of citrus, juniper and sencha develop into a long finish of spicy coriander and angelica. The aroma is complex and harmonious. 9. Tanqueray No.10 Gin This small batch gin infuses not only peel, but the whole of the fruit. Grapefruit, orange, lime and chamomile set Tanqueray No.10 apart.

10. Tanqueray Gin Four times distilled with four botanicals juniper, coriander, angelica and liquorice. 11. Gordon's Elderflower Gin Refreshing Gordon’s London Dry gin is combined with the delicate taste of elderflower for a delicious twist on a great British classic. 12. Gordon's Sloe Gin The finest wild sloe berries are gently steeped, before adding Gordon's gin, marrying the dryness of Gordon's with cassis sweetness. 13. Gordon's Cucumber Gin Refreshingly easy to drink, fresh cucumber notes round off the flavour of Gordon’s Gin, while retaining its distinctive juniper notes. 14. Plymouth Gin Rich, fresh aroma of juniper, followed by notes of coriander and cardamom. Smooth, creamy and full bodied, with a slight sweetness. 15. Bombay Sapphire Gin The floral earthiness of vapour infused orris softens the bitterness of quinine in the tonic, enhancing the fresh juniper and citrus flavours. 16. Gordon's Gin Distilled using a secret recipe, the refreshing taste comes from the finest handpicked juniper berries and a selection of other botanicals. 17. Belgravia London Dry Gin Easy to drink and bursting with original botanical gin flavours. Hints of juniper, citrus and pepper on the nose & a crisp palate.
