Christmas delivery schedule Designed to minimise disruption during the busy festive period, from mid-December you will receive your calls and deliveries on different days. There will be no deliveries or collections on Christmas Day, Boxing Day or New Year’s Day and the Enterprise Sales & Service Centre will be closed on these days. Some customers will receive their scheduled delivery on a Saturday. The Sales & Service Centre will be open between 7.00am – 2.00pm on these Saturdays (see below). Normal working hours apply for all other working days. Should there be any further changes to the delivery schedule due to adverse weather, you will be contacted and advised of the revised delivery date. Customers on a greater than 2 day lead time will receive their delivery on the day as detailed below, but will receive a call prior to the call day indicated. Spotting counterfeit cash this Christmas In the first half of 2015, around 119,000 Bank of England counterfeit banknotes were taken out of circulation, estimated to be worth approximately £2.3m. Counterfeiting both cash and goods is sadly at its peak over the festive period. Protect your profits by following these simple steps to spotting a fake. • Use a detector pen – the pens work by a chemical reaction between the pen ink and the paper • Invest in a small UV light for checking notes • Run your finger across the front of the note – you should feel raised print across the words "Bank of England"
• Hold the note up to the light and check for a watermark – you should see an image of the Queen in the clear oval area in the middle of the note • Carefully check £20 notes – these are the most widely counterfeited notes, not the £50 • Look for the metallic thread running through every genuine note – it appears as silver dashes on the back of £5, £10, £20 and old £50 notes. Does your premises licence cover Christmas and New Year? With the festive season fast approaching, now is the time to check your premises licence doesn’t limit the trading hours for any activities you have planned. If your licence restricts your trading hours, you will need to apply for a Temporary Event Notice (TEN). At just £21, it allows you to extend your opening hours during a designated period of time. To apply for a Temporary Event Notice, contact your Local Authority or complete your application online at gov.uk/temporary-events-notice Licensable activities include: • Selling alcohol or serving alcohol to members of a private club • Providing entertainment (e.g. music, dancing or indoor sporting events) • Serving hot food or drink between 11pm and 5am You must apply for a TEN at least 10 days before the event - submit your application as soon as possible to avoid disappointment.

Congratulations to our Community Heroes Award
National Winner – The Cellar House The Cellar House in Norwich was crowned 2015 Enterprise Community Heroes Award National Winner. We spoke to Publican, Victoria MacDonald, who impressed judges with her efforts to make her pub the pillar of the local community.
We have received an overwhelming amount of publicity both nationally and locally. As a relatively new business it has clearly put us on the map. More importantly for me, it has been great to see the staff recognised for all their hard work.
Congratulations on your recent award win. Can you tell us a little more about the community initiatives you have undertaken at The Cellar House?
What advice would you give other Publicans thinking about getting involved in the Community Heroes Awards?
The Cellar House has become the venue of choice for a number of local groups and, over time, the pub has become a regular meeting place for many members of the local community, who see the pub as a real club-house for a variety of activities. We have also recently had our application approved to house a ‘Post Office Local’, which we hope to have up and running in the next few weeks.
Don't hesitate – think about what you do for your community. It isn't just the big events but the smaller events as well, like looking out for older regular customers or listening to smaller community groups and seeing how you can help. Talk to your staff – you'll be surprised at what they will remind you! Set aside time and plan your entry well. This is the second year we have entered, so keep trying!

Inside your pub: Display posters in areas where there is high footfall to ensure that your customers see them. Use discount or add on promotions to grab their attention. (see p16)
Outside your front door: Inspire, entice and direct customers through your doors with great blackboard designs. Inject personality into your blackboards – do you and your locals have any shared jokes or stories you can call upon?
Your community: Speak to your community through local groups (WI, PTA, Girl Guides, Boy Scouts, local gym). Have you used LinkedIn to search local businesses? If not, just type your location into the search box and it will display a list of local companies you can contact. Post them the point of sale posters or pin them on local community boards.
Digital: Update social media with all your January offers, using relevant hashtag terms such as #TryJan. If you have an email system, make sure you include your January offer on your Season’s Greetings email.

Safe food preparation Christmas is the biggest dining-out occasion of the year, and it’s really important to ensure food preparation and service is carried out safely to protect your customers from falling ill over the festive period. Red – Raw meat and poultry
Cook all food to the correct core temperature and invest in a probe thermometer to avoid the risk of serving undercooked food. Digital versions minimise the possibility of human error.
Customers falling ill or contracting food poisoning can be hugely damaging to your business. Clean and disinfect all hand contact and food contact surfaces regularly, and clean as you go. There’s no excuse for a dirty or untidy kitchen area, even in busy trading periods.

Golden Anniversary Celebrations The Colton Arms, West Kensington There were celebrations all round this October, as Publican Dorothy Nunn celebrated 50 years at The Colton Arms. Dorothy and her son Jonathan have been running the pub together since 2012 when her husband Norman passed away. Dorothy and Jonathan were joined by Enterprise CEO Simon Townsend and regional manager Joy Jones, who both congratulated her on her long service and presented her with a specially commissioned painting of the pub.
Cheers to 40 years! The Bird in Hand, Coton Hill, Shrewsbury Alan Reynolds and his wife Jan are raising a glass to 40 years at The Bird in Hand, making him the longest-serving publican in Shrewsbury. The pub plays host to many local sports teams, including darts, dominoes and pool, and is also known for its hearty Sunday lunches, great drinks selection and friendly welcoming atmosphere. Alan explains, “Being a publican isn’t a job, it’s a way of life, and you have to see it like that to run a successful business.” Taking into consideration the current climate of the industry, 40 years is a huge achievement for a Publican. Here’s to the pub’s continued success.
