“Why can’t I wear baggy sweaters year-round?” my friend jokingly asked. “They’re so comfy and, well, relaxed.” She wasn’t fooling anyone. While that oversized shaker-knit cotton sweater concealed post-holiday weight, warmer-weather clothes wouldn’t give her that free pass. Renewal, lightening up, and shedding excess baggage represent spring, and that includes your weight. More revealing attire demands a lean, toned physique. You don’t need fad diets, potentially dangerous supplements, hour-long cardio sessions, or other gimmicks to become lean for spring. Fast fat loss during any season begins with these three fundamental strategies:

1. Dump sugar. Never mind the usual culprits; added sugar lurks in even so-called healthy foods. There are actually over 50 names for sugar! Read labels carefully and take my handy sugar guide with you to help you be a sugar stealth. A good rule of thumb is five grams or less of added sugar per serving. Focus your meals instead on lean protein, healthy fats (avocado and coconut are faves), slow-release starchy carbs like legumes, and lots of leafy and cruciferous veggies. 2. Sleep more. Sleep optimizes fat-burning hormones. One study found even a single night of sleep loss could create or exacerbate insulin resistance, paving the way for obesity and diabetes. Morning-after repercussions of terrible sleep include crankiness, cravings, caffeine overload, and absentmindedly devouring a low-fat muffin. Aim for 7 – 9 hours of high quality, uninterrupted sleep every night to feel and look your best. 3. Burst and resist. Lean and defined are much sexier than a skinny, flabby body. Skip the cardio and try burst training to shift your body into an all-day fat-burning machine. You can knock out an entire burst-training workout in less than 20 minutes anywhere from hotel stairs to a park hill. I combine burst training with weight resistance in my free 4 x 4 Workout that you can knock out in less time than it takes to find a parking spot at the gym.

Her unique practice includes a myriad of services rarely found in traditional gynecological medicine. Operating out of a beautiful turn-of-the-century house located directly across from Santa Monica Beach, her practice is an “oasis” that incorporates a medical spa with complete spa services, exercise instruction, Pilates and Yoga, and discussion groups for women of all ages. She remains at the forefront in education, holds seminars on adolescent sexuality for teens and parents, and has authored among other publications, Go Figure, a workbook for young girls detailing the changes throughout their bodies. Additionally, as a testament to her exceptional care and professionalism, Dr. Lisa does the unthinkable: she makes house calls, making herself available to her patients who are unable to see her during normal business hours. Over the last decade, the doctor, along with her husband, Stephen, have leveraged her considerable influence for global philanthropy, founding Maternal Fetal Care International (MFCI) in 2005 to help mothers and children survive and enjoy better health in the poorest regions of the world. MFCI brings volunteer physicians to treat needy women and children, and provides training to local healthcare personnel to elevate the standard of medical care and decrease mother-child transmission of HIV/AIDS. In addition to establishing birthing centers in Kenya and India, Dr. Lisa Masterson co-founded in Eritrea the first OB/GYN residency program in all of sub-Saharan Africa. As described in her 2011 memoir, Paper Dollhouse, Lisa’s interest in medicine and helping others began when she was quite young and grew out of her personal experience with racial segregation while visiting her grandparents in Louisiana. When her younger brother was in need of medical attention, Lisa and her grandmother took him to the family physician where Lisa encountered two separate entrances – one for “white” patients, the other for “colored” patients. Shocked, Dr. Lisa shares, “health is a human right, from that day on I knew I was going to be a doctor and that I was going to change that!” That “can-do” attitude still drives Lisa today.

‘‘

Health is a human right, from that day on I knew I was going to be a doctor and that I was going to change that!

‘‘

Widely known from her recent co-hosting of the Emmy Award-winning Television series, The Doctors, Dr. Lisa Masterson is a medical pioneer and globally respected specialist in obstetrics, gynecology, infertility, adolescent gynecology, and family planning. Through hard work, determination and a tireless commitment to healthcare, Dr. Lisa has redefined the role of the gynecologist through her well-established Southern California practice.

Patrick and the Health Beauty Life crew had the pleasure of catching up with Dr. Lisa at her beachfront Southern California practice.

Housed within a restored century-old Victorian, and graced by a expansive ocean view, the practice illustrates that Lisa cares about the whole woman. Not solely focusing on the medical aspects of health, she believes in providing a relaxed, comfortable environment for women to explore a healthy lifestyle of medical care, massage, exercise, and nutrition. We asked Lisa, what are your top three health tips for women? Her answer: “Get moving, eat fresh fruits and vegetables, and decrease stress.” This is the type of question you might hear Dr. Lisa tackle on her super-popular iTunes Podcast, Health in Heels with Dr. Lisa Masterson, where she answers questions posted on Facebook and her Twitter feeds from fans, discusses current headlines in health, and interviews guests. Of course in true Dr. Lisa fashion, the focus is always on “being fabulous.” Most recently, Dr. Lisa has incorporated her passion for helping people and her interest in “fabulous fashion” with Therafit by Dr. Lisa, an athletic shoe line designed to be as comfortable as it is fashionable. The shoes are a beautiful confluence of style and innovation, with a customizable personal comfort system and lightweight microfiber material designed exclusively for women. When asked why she collaborated with Therafit to design athletic shoes, Lisa answered, “To encourage women to move; if you feel comfortable… you’re going to do more.” Clearly this hard working and inspirational doctor knows a thing or two about “doing more.” Though her list of accomplishments is impressive, she’s quick to point out, “I’m not done yet.” We're glad she's not. Success through Reinvention WITH JOHN ASSARAF

WATCH ARTICLE

Meet John Assaraf … self-made multi-millionaire, celebrity entrepreneur and international best-selling author. With books printed in over 30 languages, John was prominently featured in the hit film and book, The Secret. John has created five multi-million-dollar companies and through a successful career in business coaching, consulting and brain research, the Assaraf family lives (very) well on a gorgeous, six-acre estate in sunny Southern California. When not lecturing across the globe or guesting on network television shows, Assaraf indulges his passions for brain research, quantum physics, spiritual growth, health, exercise, travel, cooking, family, great food, friends and philanthropy.

His latest business venture is PraxisNow, a brain research and product development company, designed to help people free themselves from the “bondage of their past, bad habits and limited thinking,” so they can acquire the confidence, certainty and personal power to achieve their life’s goals. We had the pleasure of a poolside discussion with John at his spectacular estate on a beautifully warm Southern California day. Tan, trim and affable, John welcomed Patrick and the Health Beauty Life crew and quickly made everyone feel comfortable and at home. Nestled in the lush backcountry of northern San Diego County, John’s place is a mid-century showstopper. The grounds of meticulously manicured citrus groves spread across gently sloping hills, shaded by graceful palms, appointed by a sparkling pool, tennis court, and a 360-degree view of neighboring estates that seems to go on forever.

His Story

Ulcerative Colitis

John’s path to opulence, fame and fortune is a tale that encompasses all of the elements that he teaches. To say the least, John embodies the very foundations that he champions in work, life and family. He sets goals and achieves them through a system that he has pioneered. This includes “vision boards”, tangible photos, collages, and graphics, which depict goals that enable him to see, imagine and “emotionalize” the things he sets out to accomplish, obtain and realize. John shares a photo of his home, the very home he now owns, that he clipped from a magazine years before he ever actually saw the house. He glued the photo to a “vision board” and only discovered years later that the magnificent home where lives today, was the actual home that he envisioned owning all those years ago. He keeps that aging vision board as irrefutable proof of the power of his goal setting technique.

At 22, John developed a chronic physical disorder known as Ulcerative Colitis, an illness that presents in a myriad of uncomfortable symptoms. Treatment included painful Sigmoidoscopies and massive amounts of medication. The condition had a profound effect on John that set him on a quest to understand the cause of his illness and to find a cure from within. He found that he was not eating well, not taking care of himself and due to all of the stress associated with his illness, was in a state of acute “dis-ease.”

Breakthrough His research led him to find Psycho-neuro-immunology, the mind-body connective ecosystem that can lead to the ability to control health issues by changing behaviors and thinking. He learned the art of meditation, of eating well, of exercise, of reducing stress and put his body “at-ease” instead of “dis-ease.” Within five weeks, he found that he no longer needed medication and was for all intents, cured. On his own, John had made himself well by discovering the cause of his illness rather than simply focusing on the symptoms.

Financial Turning Point Now healthy, John decided to change his life and got serious about his future by enrolling in a real estate course and quickly earning his Real Estate license.

Real Estate - A Turning Point As a kid, John was a misfit with a bad attitude who practically lived in the principal’s office. Looking back, he realized that the problem was the limiting beliefs he had formed in response to challenges and painful experiences he had growing up and the uncertainty and lack of confidence that resulted from those responses.

‘‘

My teachers wrote me off, taking bets on when I’d land in jail. Even my father didn’t set his sights much higher than hoping I’d get steady employment at a minimum-wage job.

‘‘

John’s family moved from Israel to Montreal, Canada when he was six. Struggling to master the intricacies of English and French, young John became a target for schoolyard bullies with few friends. The lower his self-esteem sank, the harder it became to learn new skills and make friends.

Math and science were difficult and though he strived to succeed, his best efforts resulted in below-average grades. The more he struggled, the more frustrated and embarrassed he became, feeling that he was wasting time learning subjects he didn’t like.

Physically fit and financially healthy, he began learning about the power within to change, the importance of setting goals and began to achieve his goals through a laser focused, single-minded approach.

A Purposeful Life John’s purpose in life became his work, and that work allowed him to help millions of people believe in, and utilize their God-given abilities to acquire the confidence, certainty and personal power to achieve life’s goals. He reaches millions globally via speeches, training programs, television and radio appearances, and through his bestselling books; Having it All, The Vision Board Kit and The Answer. In short, John is a living example of all that is Health Beauty Life. Get to know John and his work by visiting: JohnAssaraf.com and PraxisNow.com

Grilled Ribeye “Paniolo Style” with creamed corn and caramelized Maui onions Serves 2 Prep Time: 20 minutes Cook Time: 15 minutes

Preparation

d.k's chef recommends cooking the Ribeye to medium to bring out the full flavor of the cut

INGREDIENTS 2 6-8oz ribeye steaks 2 tbs. brown sugar ½ tbs. dry mustard 1 tsp. fresh ground black pepper 1 tsp. garlic powder 1 tsp. onion powder ½ tsp. salt 1 maui onion, sliced thin 2 tbs. unsalted butter 2 cups corn kernels, fresh shucked if available ¼ c. heavy cream 1 clove garlic, minced 1 tbs. fresh chives, chopped

WATCH ARTICLE 22 | Health Beauty Life Magazine

Preheat grill. Combine the brown sugar and next five ingredients in a small bowl and set aside. Set a sauté pan over medium heat and add butter. Once butter has melted, add sliced Maui onions and reduce heat to low. Allow onions to caramelize over low heat until golden brown, 15-20 minutes. While onions are caramelizing, add heavy cream to a small pot over medium-high heat. Add garlic, chives and corn and stir until combined. Let corn simmer until cream has thickened, 10-15 minutes. Place steaks on the grill, searing both sides. Reduce heat on the grill and continue to cook to desired doneness. Remove steaks from grill and coat generously with the brown sugar rub. Return steaks to the grill and sear both sides to caramelize the rub. Serve steaks with caramelized onions and creamed corn. Enjoy!

This statuesque blonde worked on print campaigns including L’Oreal, Dior, Lancaster Cosmetics, and a JC Penney campaign that included a giant billboard ad of Eugenia towering over Time Square. In magazines, she appeared on the covers and in the pages of Vogue, Marie Claire, Cosmopolitan, W, Elle, Glamour, and countless other publications. Eugenia had no trouble transitioning from the fashion runway to Hollywood’s silver screen. TV appearances have included the hit show True Blood, FOX’s New Girl, and ABC’s Castle, while recently she worked on the feature films, Are We Officially Dating with Zac Efron and Fury, starring Brad Pitt. A flaxen bombshell with a quick wit, Eugenia also enjoys performing her stand-up routine. A great stress release, she pokes fun at the modeling and acting industries, and herself, while appearing at comedy clubs like Flappers in Burbank. Today, Eugenia continues her work in acting, stand-up and modeling while residing in Los Angeles with Bill Block, her film producer husband and their three children. In her free time she rides a motorcycle and stays fit by practicing karate and krav maga, which she describes as meditative self-defense disciplines and an instinct-sharpening workout. Eugenia’s beauty regime makes use of the healing and moisturizing benefits of olive oil while her diet is centered on the Eat Right for Your Type diet, which encourages people to eat certain foods and avoid others based on their blood type. She also takes at least five minutes to herself before bed to write in a journal and reflect on her day. When asked her secret for balancing everything, Eugenia replied, “I feel there's too much pressure to have it all, to be the perfect image of a parent and a person who follows their passion. It’s not easy when life is so fast-paced, but I try to make a conscious effort to be present in what I'm doing at the time. I try not to text when I'm with my kids, and if I need to read a script or go on set, I have a person I trust watch my kids.

My advice to other working moms is to find the humor in every situation, praise yourself when you can and follow your heart in whatever you do!

It showcases their fitness, diet and beauty secrets while hanging out with Adrienne at their favorite haunts. Adrienne is married to television producer Bud W. Brutsman, and together they have a four-year-old son, Deuce. To stay in shape, Adrienne drops off her son at school and goes straight to the gym for cardio ballet and for her new favorite, burlesque dancing. Her beauty regime starts with a good night’s sleep and as far as eating right despite a busy schedule, she keeps only healthy snacks in the house and in her bag including fresh fruit, healthy snack bars, roasted nuts, and prepared protein drinks. Adrienne said,“The best beauty routine is sleep but as all moms know, sleep is a luxury!” When asked how she deals with the stress of such a busy lifestyle, Adrienne responded, "It's very strange this thing called stress. Sometimes I want to cry, but other times, stress motivates me and drives me. But one thing that does make it all better is my son. Everything I do is for him! Knowing that, makes all the stress of being a working mom go away!”

These ultimate multi-taskers truly have it all: amazing careers, successful entertainment industry husbands, beautiful families, and the satisfaction of knowing that balance truly is key.

insight

I truly love being a mom. It’s the hardest job in the world, but it’s also the most rewarding. It has also taught me patience, to slow down, to schedule time with friends and family, and to enjoy the simple things in life.

As far as multi-tasking and balancing everything, it all comes down to planning for the day ahead on the evening before. The last thing you want to be is completely stressed out in the morning as it sets the tone for the day. Children feed off the energy of their parents so being calm, organized and stress-free is a great way to start the day.

O'ahu

Known as “The Gathering Place” where ancient Hawaiian Kings once met, O’ahu remains a hub for island activities that mixes a lush tropical paradise, spectacular resorts and some of Hawai'i's best shopping, dining and attractions. This rich mix of Eastern and Western cultures firmly rooted in the values and traditions of the native Hawaiian people, makes discovery and experiencing O’ahu a pleasure for mind, body and spirit. Let's begin with stops at two famously picturesque retreats along the Waikiki shoreline; the authentically charming Royal Hawaiian followed by the opulence and grandeur of the Moana Surfrider. At the Royal Hawaiian, we’ll experience the “Royal Lu'au” to ̄ get a taste of traditional Hawaiian fare and learn the history of the island, and we’ll spend a palm shaded afternoon with international superstar (and local hero), Jake Shimabukuro to hear his one of a kind ukulele virtuosity. We’ll gather at the legendary Mai Tai bar to sample and celebrate the original Shirley Temple, and get a Hawaiian stand-up paddling lesson where legendary Hawaiian waterman Duke Kahanamoku and the original Hawaiian Beach Boys invented modern surfing. At the Moana Surfrider, we’ll relax, dine and indulge in the sublime luxury that can only be experienced at the hotel known as “The First Lady of Waikiki.” With its stately Banyan Court, spectacular cuisine, unparalleled service, and serenely appointed Moana Lani Spa, The Moana is a vacationer’s dream and the perfect destination for a best-in-class Hawaiian getaway. We’ll go below the waves with Atlantis Submarines, and get up close and personal with a pair of extremely rare Wolphins of Sea Life Park, and soak up Pacific island culture among the extensive collections at the world famous Bishop Museum. Of course, we'll spend a little time in the sun on the North Shore, cooling off with Matsumoto’s famous Shave Ice in magical Haleiwa Town. To sample island dining, we will indulge in some seriously delicious cuisine at Waikiki’s own d.k Steak House and learn about freediving and spearfishing over a traditional lunch with island legend Kimi Werner. So come along, grab the sunscreen, turn off the cellphone, and slip on your flip-flops. Our “Day in O’ahu” is about to begin.

The Royal Hawaiian Lu'au

H

onoring a noble warrior, victory in war, celebrating a birth or offering praise for a bountiful harvest all served as reason for ancient Hawaiian citizens to gather, feast and dance. Today, The Royal Hawaiian Resort honors that tradition with Aha’ania, a Royal Lu'au ̄ Celebration. Aha’ania (translated to “gathering for a meal”) is a rich journey through Hawaiian folklore and history. Set in three acts, this Lu'au ̄ is certain to educate, entertain and inspire attendees.

Act 1: A Thriving Hawaiian Community

Performed during a delicious hors d’oeuvres and cocktail course. Celebrating the rich abundance of loko i’a (fishpods) and vibrant lo’I kalo (taro patches), you’ll experience a time where the ancients were masterful fishing experts with revolutionary irrigation methods.

Act 2: The Royal Feast

Performed after a traditional lei greeting. Skilfully performed by a masterfully wise storyteller, you’ll be enlightened with tales of Hawaiian customs as your palate is thrilled with waves of delectable culinary traditions.

Act 3: The Helumoa Story Unfolds

Sit back and relax as the talented performers take you on a historical Hawaiian journey. Starting with King Kamehamea and the Hawaiian royal beginnings of 1810, you'll travel through life during the war, the Beach Boys, Hawai'i 5-0 and the incomparable Don Ho, ending with a celebration of today’s entertainment. It’s the perfect blend of history and spectacle designed to thrill your senses and delight your soul.

B

uilt in 1927 by Matson Navigation Company, the Royal Hawaiian Resort quickly became the playground of Hollywood elite, heads of state and international royalty. Set against the golden beach and deep blue waters of Waikiki, this gloriously pink luxury experience is as famous as its long list of film and television appearances. Staring as the centerpiece in no less than five motion pictures and four television shows between 1931 and today, the lovingly referred to “Pink Palace of the Pacific” is a shining gem in the crown of Hawaiian history. Among the many “A” list Hollywood starlets to visit The Royal Hawaiian, one still sets toes tapping and brings joy through her many films. The blonde ringlet touting, tap dancing young darling, Shirley Temple, frequented the resort as a respite from the hustle and bustle of Hollywood throughout the 1930’s. Determined to provide world class service and an experience the late/great Shirley Temple wouldn’t forget, mixologists at the resort's Mai Tai Bar concocted a “Mocktail” exclusively for their special guest. According to current mixologists Kui Wright, their mission was to ensure she would have a “grown up” beverage just sweet enough for a child’s palate. This deliciously pink libation, as unique as the pink hotel itself, is still known worldwide by its namesake inspiration, Shirley Temple. No mater your age or libation preference, The Royal Hawaiian Resort is the perfect spot to relax and soak up the sun. As they say at the Mai Tai Bar, "Come enjoy “Lanikuhonua” – “where heaven meets earth.”

The Original Shirley Temple Royal Hawaiian Luxury Collection Hotel INGREDIENTS 3 oz. ginger ale 3 oz. lemon lime soda ½ oz. grenadine Fresh pineapples and maraschino cherries, for garnish

PREPARATION Add ½ cup lightly crushed ice to a cocktail glass. Add ginger ale, lemon lime soda and grenadine. Stir to combine ingredients. Finish drink by adding a slice of fresh pineapple and a maraschino cherry.

Atlantis Submarines

Underwater Adventures Await F or those who prefer to explore the vast and stunning underwater world while in Hawai'i, a submarine tour is a dream come true.

Atlantis Submarines offers environmentally friendly tours of discovery and adventure for an incredible underwater journey. With locations in Waikiki, Kona and Lahaina, ̄ ̄ each of the tour locations feature distinct characteristics enabling guests to explore their unique underwater habitats.

How McCartney listens to Kisses

People of all ages can witness up-close, without getting wet, how sunken ships, remnants of hurricane swept airplanes, pyramid structures, and other objects have combined with Mother Nature to become artificial reefs and attract thousands of fish. These artificial reefs, which Atlantis created in collaboration with the State of Hawai'i, have shaped more undersea “homes for fish” and contributed to the growth of marine life in the area.

A submarine tour is an ideal way to gain first-hand insight into the value and importance of reefs and to observe how mankind can contribute to the development of reefs and associated ecosystems. In the comfort and security of Atlantis’ technologically advanced, and thoroughly eco-friendly and pollutant-free passenger submarines, remarkable reefs can be viewed on this unique underwater tour through areas pulsating with marine life.

eet Kimi Werner – the freediving, spearfishing island native with a passion for cooking, painting and living a simple, sustainable life. Kimi is also fast becoming an island legend with a story to tell. On a recent freedive in the waters off of Mexico, Kimi came face to face with an enormous Great White shark. Momentarily distracted by water in her facemask, she was alerted by her diving buddy that the lethal predator was only feet away. For most folks, that event would elicit a unanimous flight or fight reaction, and in almost every case, flight would be the only logical option.

WATCH ARTICLE 54 | Health Beauty Life Magazine

Rather than flee, Kimi squealed with delight and swam toward the massive animal, comfortable in the knowledge that it was the safest action to take. Confident that doing the opposite could have ended quite unpleasantly, to say the least. By swimming to the shark, Kimi signaled that she and the shark were alike: just two predators seeking food.

Photo: Chris Wade

Beautifully gracious with an Aloha spirit that radiates inner tranquility and unmistakable soulfulness, Kimi welcomed the Health Beauty Life crew into her hilltop North Shore home to share her astonishing story.

‘‘

I still feel most lucky for the childhood I was given and for being able to continue to live in Hawai'i and pursue my passions of catching great fish, cooking great food and painting whatever makes me happy!

‘‘

Raised on Maui, but residing in the hills above Hale’iwa on the north shore of O’ahu, the spear fisherman’s daughter has grown into a gifted artist, well-schooled culinary whiz and life long water woman whose benevolence and love for all creatures colors her passion for under water adventure.

Kimi lives artfully, gracefully and courageously, nourished by the land and the sea, inspired the natural beauty of her surroundings, and graciously shares her inner light for all to see. In short, she is the embodiment of all things Health Beauty Life. Aloha.

bout an hour drive from Waikiki is O’ahu’s famed North Shore. Spanning seven miles from Kaena and Kahuku Points, this coastal region is known for its massive waves that attract surfers from all around the globe. The big, glassy winter waves bring out the experts, while summer waves are far smaller and gentler, making the North Shore the perfect surf spot for beginners and veterans alike. Waimea Bay, along with other famous spots including Ehukai Beach (Banzai Pipeline) and Sunset Beach host world-renowned surf competitions. The Vans Triple Crown, known as the Super Bowl of Surfing, happens every year between November and December on O’ahu. Waimea Bay is also home to the Quiksilver in Memory of Eddie Aikau surf competition. Honoring legendary Hawaiian waterman Eddie Aikau, this special contest only happens during massive swells when “The Bay Calls the Day.” The sport’s elite surfers are called between December and February to surf Waimea when the waves are at a minimum of 20-feet high with 30-foot face heights. The call for this epic competition has only been made eight times in the last 24 years. Beyond the surf, O’ahu’s North Shore offers beautiful beaches with wide stretches of sand to sunbathe, swim and picnic. Visitors can also relax at Turtle Bay Resort, explore Waimea Valley, a botanical garden and cultural attraction that is home to beautiful Waimea Falls, or head into town at Haleiwa to shop and dine like a local.

Sail along the golden sea while taking in the views, marvel at humpback whales, swim with sea turtles, and explore Maui’s pristine underwater world of tropical reefs and the exotic fish that inhabit them. Although each boat is large enough to accommodate 100 passengers, the most they host are 49, making the already large boats more spacious and comfortable.

This already memorable experience is made even sweeter by a friendly and knowledgeable staff. There’s a reason the Teralani Sailing Adventures has won Maui’s News Readers' Poll for Best Water Activity two years in a row, as well as Trip Advisors' Certificate of Excellence Award; and at risk of overusing the phrase "must see", you simply cannot leave Maui until you’ve experienced the magic of a Teralani Sailing Adventures.

Flatbread Company

n the way to Piiholo Zipline, the crew stopped in at a Paia town favorite, Flatbread Company.

Flatbread Company is one of those joints you just can’t help but fall in love with. Beginning in 1998 in Amesbury, Massachesetts with the mission of providing guests and employees a place to “renew their spirit,” they continued to do so by expanding to nine different locations, all of which are on the east coast except for one, tucked into the heart of Paia town on the island of Maui. The setting and character of Paia feels perfectly in line with the Flatbread Co. soul and the restaurant fits nicely on a main street filled with shops, dining and island charm. Flatbread creates delicious hand-crafted pizzas, served up by a crew of hard working locals who clearly take pride in their work. Using local farmer’s products whenever possible, their pizzas start with organic ingredients and free-range meats, and are placed in a primitive wood-fired oven where you can watch them bake to perfection. The result is a piping-hot, perfectly proportioned pizza that’s intensely flavored, with crust that melts in your mouth. An integral part of each community served, Flatbread Company offers sustainability support by sourcing through local farmers and producers. Flatbread Company is a place for play for adults and kids, and a tasty stop on your “Day in Maui.” Don’t miss it.

Piiholo Ranch Zipline

Soar Like a Bird

Exhilarating Maui Zipline Excursions

S

ituated along the flanks of Haleakala,̄ one of the most unique areas on the island of Maui is the region known to locals as Upcountry. Home to Hawai'i's version of the cowboy, or Paniolo, this lush and picturesque area is also known for its many produce and flower farms. A mile above the town of Makawao, on the lower slopes of Haleakalā Crater is Piiholo Ranch. Owned by Peter Baldwin and his three sons, Piiholo Ranch has housed a thriving cattle business and horseback-riding venture for many years. Fifth and sixth generation descendants of Reverend Dwight Baldwin, who came to Maui in the 1830’s as a missionary, the younger Baldwins carved out a corner of the ranch to build an impressive zipline course. With rolling meadows, deep gulches and a high hill commanding spectacular views, this particular area offers the ideal setting for the world-class adventure.

Since opening in 2008, Piiholo Ranch Zipline has quickly become one of the leading zipline adventures in the United States, and is the premier zipline in Maui. Designed to showcase its beautiful setting, the course crosses intense ravines and tall trees, and offers stunning vistas from mountain to sea. Visitors of all ages can zip side-by-side with family and friends at the longest zipline of its kind in the state of Hawai'i, running over a half-mile long. The newest adventure, the Canopy Course, opened in 2011 and offers exhilarating zips through the treetops among the forest awning. It provides a close-up view of the island landscape few people have the opportunity to experience. Visitors can enjoy immense eucalyptus forests, native koa and ohia trees, indigenous plants and grand views while having the time of their lives.

Cliff Diving

ur stay at the Sheraton took on a mystic feel as we gathered at sunset to experience a bit of Hawaiian legend.

Hawaiians believe that Pu’u Keka’a (or Black Rock) is one of three places where souls of the dead leap from earth into their ancestral spirit land. Only a person with great spiritual strength can enter that world and return, and that person was Maui’s last chief, King Kahekili. Kahekili gained much respect from leaping feet first from heights as high as 300 to 400 feet, plunging into the water below, and returning unscathed. His greatest leap was from Black Rock, where the Maui Sheraton now recreates the honors of this rich tradition every sunset. The nightly ritual of Lele Kawa, or cliff diving, begins just before sunset. A chant of old Hawai’i signals its start, and the echo of a conch shell announces the arrival of the young cliff diving warrior. Snag a spot along the beach or the Cliff Dive Grill and watch the cliff diver run through the grounds of the resort carrying a glowing torch, lighting more along his path to the top of Black Rock. He acknowledges the ancient Hawaiian gods by offering high lei to the heavens above before taking the leap into the ocean below, falling into the water along with the sun. Don’t miss this extraordinary display of Hawaiian tradition.

Beautifully Historic

to the island of Lana‘i. ̄ Once widely known as “Hawai'i's most enticing island,” Lana‘i has evolved into a ̄ world-class getaway spot with an ever-growing fan base that now, frequently refer to it as “The Private Island,” due to the recent acquisition of most of the island by Oracle Corporation CEO, Larry Ellison.

Through Mr. Ellison’s ownership and investment, the island, formerly the home of pineapple entrepreneur James Drummond Dole and his 20,000-acre plantation has reemerged as a world-class vacation destination with two magnificent resorts: the Four Seasons Resort Lana`i ̄ at Manele Bay and Four Seasons Resort Lana`i, The Lodge at Koele. ̄ ̄ Expect tranquility, exquisite amenities and slightly drier weather than other Hawaiian Islands. Lana‘i invites shutting off the cell phone, taking a deep breath and down ̄ shifting to a sun splashed intermission from the outside world. There are no shopping malls or traffic lights, no big-box retailers or fast-food chains: only 47 miles of pristine coast line, warm, crystal-clear waters, white sandy beaches ringed by red lava cliffs and verdant pine forests beyond. Even “downtown” Lana‘i ̄ City — isn’t a city in the traditional sense, but a petite, historic plantation town nestled among the pines at an elevation of 1,700 feet. At that altitude, it’s quite a bit cooler than down on the beach, so be sure to pack a sweater. Lana‘i’s air is perfumed with the fragrances of native pineapple and ̄ citrus groves, and the views range from breathtaking sunrises and show-stopping sunsets to the sublime vistas of neighboring islands.

Pu‘u Pehe (Sweetheart Rock)

Pu‘u Pehe (Sweetheart Rock) Start your day with a breathtaking sunrise at Pu’u Pehe

S

tanding 80 feet tall, Pu‘u Pehe—also known as "Sweetheart Rock"—is one of Lana`i’s most ̄ recognizable landmarks. A short walk from the Four Seasons Resort Lana`i Bay, Pu‘u Pehe is situated about 150 ̄ at Manele ̄ feet offshore between Manele Bay and Hulopo‘e Bay along ̄ ̄ the island’s southern coastline. A sandy trail leads from the sparkling waters of Manale Bay to a breathtaking overlook ̄ with views of Sweetheart Rock and neighboring islands. The trail is accented with tide pools, a majestic sea arch and the beautifully secluded "Sharks Cove." The path leads to a perfect vantage point to catch a spectacular sunset or to greet the Lana`i ̄ dawn with a sunrise you'll never forget.

Legend has it Sweetheart Rock is the setting for one of Hawai'i's most enduring legends; a tale about a beautiful Maui princess named Pu'u Pehe who was captured by a young warrior from Lana`i. ̄ The warrior brought her back to Lana`i, took her as his wife, ̄ and confined her in a sea cave near the rock. While the warrior was away, the weather changed drastically, and the raging surf began to pound the island. The warrior rushed back to the sea cave, arriving too late, as his beloved Pu‘u Pehe had drowned. Heartbroken, he retrieved her body and, with the help of the gods, climbed the steep rock island, where he buried her in a tomb and, overcome with grief, leapt to his death. To this day, the native rocks on the summit of Pu'u Pehe resemble a tomb-like structure.

Fresh Lobster Arugula Salad with Truffle Oil & Crispy Tokyo Negi

INGREDIENTS 2 fresh lobster (1 – 1 ½ lbs. each) 3 stalks Tokyo Negi (leeks may be subsitituted) 3 tbs. freshly grated parmesan cheese, divided 8oz fresh arugula, washed and dried 1 tbs. truffle oil, plus more for drizzling 2 tbs. olive oil, divided 1 tbs. yuzu juice (any citrus juice may be substituted) Miso salt Fresh ground black pepper Recipe courtesy of Nobu

WATCH ARTICLE

Preparation Place a stockpot with water over medium-high heat and allow water to come to a boil; meanwhile, add cold water and ice to a large bowl and set aside. Drop lobsters in the water and blanch for 4-5 minutes. Remove lobsters from the stockpot and place them in the cold water bath immediately (this will stop the cooking process and lock in the bright red color). Set cooked lobster aside to cool. Once lobster has cooled, remove the tail meat as well as the meat from the claws and the knuckles and set aside. To prepare crispy Tokyo Negi (or leeks), trim the ends of each stock and remove the green portion. Cut each bulb down the center, being careful to only cut through to the center. Unfold bulb like a book and finely julienne. Soak sliced in cold water for several minutes to remove the sticky membrane from the vegetable. Strain the Tokyo Negi and blot with a towel to remove excess moisture. Place 1 tbs. olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat and flash fry until golden brown (1-2 minutes). Remove Tokyo Negi slices from oil on to a towel and allow to cool. To prepare the salad, add arugula to medium bowl and drizzle remaining olive oil along with the truffle oil and yuzu juice. Add 2 tbs. fresh parmesan and season with Miso salt and black pepper. Toss salad lightly to combine ingredients. Cut lobster tail, knuckle and claw meat into large, bite-size pieces and divide onto two serving plates. Divide the salad and place atop each mound of lobster. Finish with a sprinkling of fresh parmesan cheese and a drizzle of truffle oil. ENJOY!

From a modest beginning performing at a local Honolulu café, Jake has gone on to play renowned and popular venues and festivals across the globe. He has also recorded several CDs, composed music for a movie and performed on national television. Jake is also the subject of a PBS documentary, Life on Four Strings.

Falling in love with the instrument at the tender age of four, Jake’s affection grew into a deep passion. Experimenting with various techniques, he creates sounds never thought possible on the tiny four-string, two-octave instrument. From his amazing cover of George Harrison’s While My Guitar Gently Weeps to a haunting rendition of Leonard Cohen‘s Hallelujah, this young but worldly musician simply defies categorizing. He plays everything from jazz, blues, and funk, to classical, bluegrass, folk, flamenco, and even rock proving time and again that the ukulele is capable of so much more than just traditional Hawaiian music.

Jake’s performances captivate audiences with intricate strumming and plucking, electrifying high-energy grooves and smooth, melodic ballads. In the years to come, he plans to continue recording, performing, collaborating, and, above all, staying happy.
