MILESTONES 1877 Helly Juell Hansen treated his workwear with linseed oil to make it waterproof. It was a simple and functional innovation that was the first step in making clothes for the professional worker which were adapted to his needs. 1878 Helly Hansen wins first prize for waterproof clothing for fishermen at the Paris Expo. Waterproof clothing had never been seen reviously. The award was the first of many. 1924 Helly Hansen launches Linox fabric. The material is watertight and shiny - without the stickiness of oil. 1931 Helly Hansen launches Lin-å-lätt - a finer quality especially adapted for women. 1932 Helly Hansen launches kapok lifejackets - a safe and comfortable invention which is a major step forward for safety at sea.

1951 Helly Hansen discovers a new technique for seams: Microweld™, the first 100% waterproof seam is created. 1961 Helly Hansen starts working with fibre pile a new method for knitting the fibers. 1962 Helly Hansen invents Propile, the first ever fleece garment. 1970 Helly Hansen begins experimenting with underwear - the true “three-layer system” is born. 1972 Helly Hansen launches PVC-foam with closed cells for lifejackets. The foam is still used as flotation material 30 years later. 1975 The launch of Lifa® - revolutionary, high performance sports underwear. A collection of polypropylene underwear which transports moisture away from the skin better than any other fabric.

1975 Helly Hansen launches a survival suit which is produced in Moss, Norway. 1977 Helly Hansen is the first company in Europe to offer waterproof breathable clothing. 1977 Helly Hansen fibre pile becomes the leading insulation garment on the market for work in tough weather. The products become fashionable at the end of the 1970s. 1980 Helly Hansen launches Helly Tech® a unique surface treatment which allows moisture to escape while preventing it from entering the material. 1987 Helly Hansen introduces the Equipe Airflow Vent System for the winter sports market - an adaptation allowing various degrees of air to circulate, providing maximum warmth during activity.

1994 Helly Hansen is the official supplier of all clothes for volunteers during the winter Olympics in Lillehammer. 2002 Helly Hansen Workwear receives an award for good design for IMS/ Click.on™. The prize is awarded by the Norwegian Design Council. 2004 After 127 years, Helly Hansen launches its first shoe collection with the sailing shoes Hydrator, Level 10 and Latitude 60. The year after, the shoe ShoreHike wins the Norwegian Design Council’s special prize for good design. 2006 Helly Hansen launches an underwear range for the best results in cold climates. The Helly Hansen warm baselayer combines Lifa® technology with merino wool. This product becomes a best seller and wins several “best in test” awards around the world.

2008 Helly Hansen launches Odin outdoor collection with Helly Tech® 02 technology, YKK’s revolutionary Aquaseal zip and the Fusion module system. During its first year, the Odin collection wins Germany’s Red Dot Design Award. 2008/9 Helly Hansen collaborates with Ericsson Racing Team 2008/2009 Volvo Ocean Race. The project leads to significant progress within waterproof fabrication for extreme offshore conditions. A complete new sailing package is launched a year later. 2012 Helly Hansen receives the Award for Design Excellence for the ODIN Fastpack Jacket. The prize is awarded by the Norwegian Design Council.

In 1878, Helly Hansen won a prize at the international exhibition in Paris for its waterproof clothes for fishermen and sailors. We continue our collaboration with fishermen off Alaska, sailors in the Arctic and oil workers in the North Sea, and we have a single goal in sight: that we should always be their first choice when it comes to clothes for extreme conditions. Our PVC and PU coated garments are designed to give the best freedom of movement in dangerous working conditions aboard fishing boats and other vessels. At Helly Hansen Workwear we are always striving to find out more about our customers’ needs. We do this by meeting our customers, and by carrying out tests and market research. For three years, we have been involved in a research project targeted at workwear for women. The project is administrated by the Norwegian State consumer research Institute. Even now, our designers are creating a women’s collection of attractive garments with a practical fit. The ce marking indicates Compliance with the essential Requirements for health and safety on the basis of eu directive (89/686/eec) Helly Hansen workwearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s ppe products are manufactured and tested in accordance with the standards which support European Directive (89/686/eec) and are therefore approved in accordance with CE marking regulations. Helly Hansen workwear is intended to prevent accidents and injuries during work on exposure to cold, heat, fire, rain and in limited visibility. The CE marking refers to a safety level on the product. European Directive (89/686/eec) is the applicable law for the European member states on the issue of personal protective equipment (ppe). European Directive (89/686/eeg) states as a basic requirement for design and manufacture that ppe is used to make working conditions safer.

Product characteristics.

The CE marking means that the product fulfils the requirements for the relevant product category. This implies no guarantee that the product will prevent accidents or serious injuries if the user is exposed to such risks in a work environment.

PPE directive 89/656 for end users

End users must refer to directive 89/656/EEG for the assessment of health and safety at work. The employer must carry out a risk assessment and decide on the right protective equipment for their individual work environment. Employers are responsible for suitable personal protective equipment being available to personnel. A summary follows below of European (EN) standards which are followed by Helly Hansen Workwear. For complete information about CE marking, please contact your local authorities. The specified test results are given as a symbol on the product. Either it is indicated that the measurement took place according to the prescribed methods or that the result is 1, 2 or 3 where 3 is the highest protection level. The standard specifies test methods and requirements of functional properties in garments which intended to protect against cold (air temperature below -5 °C). Helly Hansen has tested its products according to method B, which means that the insulation (X) has been measured for a garment combination (jacket/pant or coveralls) with a base layer. The requirements may not be sufficient in oxygen enriched flammable atmospheres. This European standard is not applicable for protection against mains voltages. The standard specifies requirements for the limited flame spread properties of materials and material assemblies used in protective clothing. The material is classified according to an index which indicates the limit of flame spread (X) before and after standard washing procedure (Y, Z).

This part of this standard specifies methods to test material and garments intended for use in heat- and flameresistance clothing for workers exposed to electric arc. The test is intended to simulate an accident with an electric arc in a low voltage installation. The material test is used to determine thermal insulation and risk of skin injury, and to ensure that the garment can still be used after these tests. Both material and garment tests are carried out in low voltage installations (400 VAC). The duration of the electric arc is 500 ms and the current strength used is 4 KA for class 1 and 7 KA for class 2 protection.

This standard specifies performance requirements for garments made from flexible materials, which are designed to protect the wearer’s body, except the hands, from heat and/or flame. Limited flame spread (A1 – surface ignition/ A2 – edge ignition) is tested according to a method which is given in ISO 15025. To fulfill the requirements in EN ISO 11612, the clothes must also protect against at least one form of heat. The heat can be conveyed through convection B (level B1-B3) according to ISO 9151, through radiation C (level C1-C4) according to ISO 6942, splashes from molten aluminium (level D1-D3) or splashes from molten iron (level E1-E3) according to ISO 9185, or contact heat (level F1-F3) according to ISO 12127. protective clothing in order to reduce the possibility of the clothing burning and thereby itself constituting a hazard. The material(s) complies with EN ISO 14116 indexes 0/0/0 - limited flame spread index / number of washes with letter H, I or C / washing temperature H - domestic wash, I - industrially wash, C - dry-clean. All garments approved according to EN 14058 shall be marked with pictogram indicating that protection against cool environment is offered with the appropriate performance level: Y - Thermal resistance class (classes 1-3)

Helly Hansen Workwear Lifejackets 150 N and 275 N These lifejackets provide face-up flotation with levels of support sufficient for various open and rough waters uses. Life jackets have a buoyancy distribution sufficient to turn most users, when tested on users wearing swimming costumes according to 12402, to a position where the mouth has a defined freeboard above water’s surface even when the user is unconscious. ISO 12402 give guidance on the design and application of personal flotation devices (PFD) for persons engaged in activities, whether in relation to their work or their leisure, in or near water. PFDs manufactured selected and maintained to this standard should give a reasonable assurance of safety from drowning to a person who is immersed in water. Helly Hansen Work Wear sells PFDs that do not require intervention (automatically operating PFDs). They are suited to activities where persons are likely to enter the water unexpectedly, whereas PFDs requiring intervention e.g. manually inflated PFDs are only suitable for use if the user believes there will be sufficient time to produce full buoyancy, or help is close at hand. In every circumstance, the user should ensure that the operation of the PFD is suited to the specific application. The conformity of a PFD to the part of 12402 does not imply that it’s suited for all circumstances. Under certain conditions such as rough water and waves, the use of watertight and multilayer clothing, which provide intentionally or otherwise additional buoyancy, or the use of equipment with additional weight such as tool belts will likely alter the performance of the PFD. Users, owners and employers need to ensure that this is taken into account when selecting a PFD. Similarly, PFDs may not perform as well in extremes of temperatures, although fully approved. PFDs may also be affected by other conditions of use, such as chemical exposure and welding, and may require additional protection. The user has to be assured that the PFD will not be adversely affected. The relative amount of required inspection and maintains is a factor of paramount importance in the choice and application of specific PFDs. Its potential length of service often depends on the conditions of use and storage, which are the responsibility of the owner, user and /or employer.

SOLAS. Level 275 N This level is intended primarily for offshore use under extreme conditions and by people who are carrying significant weights and thus require additional buoyancy. It is also of value to those who are wearing clothing which traps air and which may adversely affect the selfrighting capacity of the lifejacket.

ISO 12402-3. Level 150 N Life jackets performance level 150 is intended for general offshore and rough weather use where a high standard of performance is required.

Requirements for lifejackets on large, commercial seagoing ships are regulated by the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) under the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) ISO 12402-1 addresses lifejackets for seagoing ships.

• It is essential that the owner, user and employers choose those PFDs that meet the correct standard for the circumstances in which they will be used. • PFD needs to be secured when worn, in order to provide positive support in the water and to allow the user to swim or actively assist himself or others. • No PFD guarantees rescue but is seen as means to reduce the risk of drowning.
