T Exploring

he York County Heritage Trust (YCHT) plans a variety of programs and special events that will explore the history, culture, and people of York County, Pennsylvania, and the United States. “Front Porch to Front Lines: York County Goes to War,” an exhibit honoring York County men and women who served in the nation’s military during wartime, is being offered at the Historical Society Museum, 250 E. Market St., York. The exhibit tells the stories of the service and sacrifice of York County residents during World War I, World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. Aspects of life on the home front during these wars will also be highlighted. The museum is open on Tuesdays through Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. In conjunction with the exhibit, YCHT will offer a variety of special programs. Veteran Viewpoints will be offered from 1 to 4 p.m. on the third Saturday of the month during the exhibit’s run. During this time, veteran volunteers will interact with visitors in the exhibit gallery and share stories of their service. For a detailed schedule, visit www.yorkheritage.org. Several special programs and lectures will also be presented to expand upon the information presented in the exhibit. On Saturday, Sept. 17, “The Vietnam Experience and Culture” will be presented by Dr. Marilynn Larew of Towson University and Stan Brenner, a Vietnam veteran who served in the U.S. Marine Corps. The early years of the Vietnam War will be the focus of this discussion, which will address the political and cultural background of the war. The program will be presented at the Historical Society Museum. On Saturday, Nov. 19, “World War II Home Front Artwork Gallery Talk” will feature Richard Hoff, who will highlight his graphite pencil drawings of life in America during the World War II era. Hoff will also discuss his extensive research into life on the home front. A movie series will also be presented in conjunction with the “Front Porch to Front Lines: York County Goes to War” exhibit. Screenings will be presented at the Strand-Capitol Performing Arts Center, 50 N. George St., York, on Fridays and Saturdays at 7 p.m. and on Sundays at 3 p.m. The film schedule includes “Tora! Tora! Tora!” on Friday, Dec. 2, through Sunday, Dec. 4; “Pork Chop Hill” on Friday, March 16, to Sunday, March 18, 2012; “All Quiet on the Western Front” on Friday, May 18, through Sunday, May 20, 2012; and “Born on the Fourth of July” on Friday, July 6, 2012. Also on tap are events and programs to commemorate the Civil War sesquicentennial. YCHT will join with historic sites and institutions, organizations, and communities across Pennsylvania to present activities, programs, and events to mark the 150th anniversary of the Civil War and to highlight Pennsylvania’s role in the war. YCHT plans to offer opportunities for the public to learn more about York’s role in the Civil War, which included a Confederate invasion, a United States Army hospital, and serving as home to soldiers, generals, and political figures. YCHT’s upcoming Second Saturday programs will offer insight into York’s Civil War history. The free lecture program is offered at 10:30 a.m. on the second Saturday of each month. Attendees are encouraged to “make a day of it” by attending the lecture and then spending the rest of the day visiting YCHT museums and historic sites and enjoying other downtown York offerings. On Saturday, Aug. 13, the program “Abraham Lincoln: Leg-

ends, Myths, and Lies” will feature James Hayney as Abraham Lincoln. Hayney’s first-person program will explore both the fact and fiction surrounding the life of the esteemed president. This program will be held in the meeting hall of the Historical Society Museum. For more information on upcoming Second Saturday programs, readers may visit the trust’s Events Calendar at www.yorkheritage.org/eventscalendar. asp or contact the Education Department at 717-846-6452. The Civil War Road Show, a traveling exhibition and heritage tourism experience, will make a stop at Penn Park in York from Friday, Aug. 19, through Sunday, Aug. 21. The exhibition is housed in a 53-foot tractor trailer that is traveling across Pennsylvania during the four-year Civil War anniversary period. The exhibition tells the stories of the commonwealth’s soldiers and civilians, highlighting aspects of life in the battlefield and on the home front. The whole family will be engaged by the exhibit’s interactive, hands-on offerings. To further its goal of collecting Pennsylvania’s Civil War

history one story at time, the Civil War Road Show also includes a “Share Your Story” recording booth feature, where attendees may share their own Civil War-era family photographs, artifacts, and stories. The contributions will be uploaded to the Pennsylvania Civil War 150 website at www. pacivilwar150.com. YCHT plans to offer additional special programming and activities while the Civil War Road Show is in town. For a preview of the exhibition, visit www.pacivilwar150.com/road-show.aspx. Another way residents and visitors can explore York’s history is through YCHT walking tours that showcase York’s historical sites. Tours are available featuring the themes of “Revolutionary and Colonial York” and “York During the Civil War.” Also offered between Memorial Day and Labor Day is a walking tour of the York Murals, a downtown art project focusing on 200 years of York history. Tours usually depart from the gift shop at the Colonial Complex, 157 W. Market St., York, at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. The tours last for 45 to 60 minutes and should be scheduled two weeks in advance. Walking tours are available for groups of 10 or more. YCHT also plans special fundraising events. The trust will present its 11th annual Book Blast on Thursday, Aug. 11, through Saturday, Aug. 13, at the Agricultural and Industrial Museum, 217 W. Princess St., York. YCHT will then hold its annual Oyster Festival on Sunday, Oct. 16, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Agricultural and Industrial Museum. Attendees of last year’s festival enjoyed more than 10,000 raw and fried oysters, as well as a variety of other food. In addition to highlighting the Colonial era, last year’s event featured living history and artisan demonstrations, live music, and hands-on activities relating to York’s heritage. For more information on additional YCHT programs and collections, as well as membership and volunteer opportunities, visit the website at www.yorkheritage.org. The trust may also be contacted by telephone at 717-848-1587.

The York Fair, distinguished as the United States’ oldest fair, having started in 1765, attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors each year. The fair started as a two-day agricultural market and continued to expand in length and scope over the years to become the 10-day event it is today. The 2011 York Fair will run from Sept. 9 to 18 at the fairgrounds, located at the York Expo Center, Carlisle Avenue, York. This year’s event will feature something for everyone. Fair visitors interested in agricultural exhibits have a wide assortment from which to choose -- fresh fruits and vegetables and canned goods to live animals such as goats, sheep, rabbits, pigs, cows, ducks, chickens, and more. FFA members and 4-Hers get to show

OUR MISSION: Help our patients become as healthy as possible while educating them about Chiropractic and other natural solutions. We aim to motivate them to take a more active and responsible role in restoring and maintaining their own health, and to encourage others to do the same. It is understood that each person presents with their own set of circumstances and can respond very differently to treatments. For this reason, we tailor a specific plan of action to meet every individual’s needs, goals and unique physical condition. In our office, we will guide you towards a life filled with an abundance of health. It is within all of us to be healthy. Call today to find out how we can help you! OUR FACILITY: We are proud to provide a very comfortable, healing and educational atmosphere with state-of-the-art equipment, allowing for the highest quality chiropractic care available. It is one of our top priorities to offer the best care in South Central Pennsylvania, and to inspire the well-being of our patients. We are confident that you will feel right at home in our office as we welcome all patients as if they were family. ABOUT DR. LEHMAN: My name is Dr. Nichole Lehman, aka Dr. Niki. I grew up in York and have been serving South Central PA for over 10 years as a Chiropractic Physician. Health and fitness have always been a major influence, motivator and focus throughout my life, and has led me to a very rewarding career that I love. I have been avidly involved in sports and health throughout my youth and adulthood, having been a competitive swimmer in high school and in college at North Carolina State University. While at NC State, I worked as an assistant strength coach and personal trainer with beginner to elite athletes, which began to narrow my focus on a career in health. It was during my competitive swimming career that I encountered a need for chiropractic care to alleviate my own neck and shoulder injuries, and found that it did just that - AND it also helped to correct my problem. After graduating from NC State, I obtained my Doctorate degree in Chiropractic at Palmer College of Chiropractic West. My experiences have taught me that chiropractic is so much more than alleviating aches and pains. I saw how it improved the lives of my patients and it is my passion to help others achieve an abundance of health through my knowledge and experience. I continue to stay involved in the community with athletics and health-related forums, and it is greatly fulfilling to be able to educate others and to provide them with the tools necessary to take their health to the next level.
