Christiana Fire Company to host car show

The Christiana Fire Company will present the Cruisin’ in Christiana Car Show on Saturday, June 1, on the grounds of the William P. Brinton House, 17 Green St., Christiana. Registration will open at 9 a.m., and the show will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Vehicle owners will be asked to pay a registration fee, with all proceeds benefiting the fire company. Dash plaques will be presented to the first 30 entrants. Those who register in advance will receive a discount.

Registration forms are available at the Christiana Borough office, 10 W. Slokom Ave. Sameday registrations will also be accepted.

“All makes and models are welcome. We are talking tractors, rigs and motorcycles - you name it,” said Shawnie Betts, who is co-chair of the event along with fire company trustee Brandon Maser.

In addition to the car show, there will be food for sale, including chicken barbecue prepared by fire company members. The Taco RV and Cool Summer Ice Cream food trucks will also be on hand, and music will be provided by The 45 Guy, who will spin vinyl records.

League sets Family Fun Day

Octorara Little League (OLL) will present its second annual Family Fun Day on Saturday, June 1, from noon to 5 p.m. at the league’s main fields, 325 N. Bridge St., Christiana. The event will include vendors, food trucks and an opportunity for attendees to win prizes. A highlight of the day will be a coaches’ and parents’ home run derby at 3 p.m.

The day will begin with Little League games starting at 9 a.m., where 16 teams will play on all four ballfields. Vendors will be on hand beginning at noon for the start of Family Fun Day.

The first Cruisin’ in Christiana Car Show was held last fall, but the event fell victim to inclement weather, so organizers decided to change the car show to spring. “We are hoping for better weather, so more people are apt to come out,” said Betts, noting that planning for the event has been going on the past six months. “I would love to see 50-plus cars.”

classic car and best motorcycle.

“The community is going to judge. If they come out to see the cars, they will get an entry form to pick the winners,” said Betts, noting that Best of Show will awarded in memory of her father, Terry Walker Sr., a car enthusiast.

Those who attend the show will be asked to vote for their favorite vehicle. There will also be awards in various classes, such as best

Cruisin’ in Christiana is being held on the same day as Satur day on the Porch, a program presented by the Christiana Historical Society on the first

Saturday of each month from 8 a.m. to noon. During the event, attendees may purchase hot coffee, hot tea and sweets and enjoy conversation and musical entertainment. The performer on June 1 will be Phares Blank, who plays accordion music.

In the event of rain, the car show will be held on Saturday, June 8. For more informa tion, visit www.facebook.com/ christianafirecompany.

“There will be more than 30 vendors lining the lower field. We will have everything from someone selling edible cookie dough to crocheted crafts and apparel, including customized screen-printed T-shirts,” said Brianna Kowalchik, the league’s events/social media coordinator. Representatives from home-based businesses will also be on hand, including Scentsy and Tastefully Simple. Other vendors will offer items such as goat milk soap and lotion; tumblers, earrings and keychains; macrame items;

The community is invited to join members of the Pequea Presbyterian Church in Gap as it celebrates its 300th anniversary on Saturday, May 25, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. The day will feature food, a silent auction, displays of historical items and cornhole games for children. Live music will be provided by Summit Hill Bluegrass.

“We will have historical artifacts on display inside and we will have time period demonstrations like sheep-to-shawl,” said Jim Kennedy, chairperson of the anniversary committee, noting that a barbecue food truck will be present. Food will be free, but donations will be accepted.

The historic buildings will be open throughout the day, including the stone church, characterized by its arched stained glass windows and curved pews, as well as the session house, which is a separate building from the church. It is situated next to the running waters of the Pequea Creek

and surrounded by a prayer garden. Inside, the building is dominated by a large fireplace.

“Business meetings were not permitted in the church, so they had separate buildings,” explained pastor Alfred Wanner.

“Behind the fireplace screen is one of the church’s original chandeliers. (The chandelier) was up in the ceiling and it had little gas lamps.” Several of the lamps are also on display in

According to a written history of the church, it was organized on Oct. 13, 1724. The first church, a log building that was located in the present-day cemetery, was built sometime in the 1750s, followed by the construction of a small stone church. The church celebrated its 175th anniversary in 1899, when plans were formulated to construct a new church, which is the present-day building. It was completed in the fall of 1902.

“There is a time capsule in the cornerstone from more than 100 years ago, and later on in the year, we will open that and make up our own time capsule to replace it,” Kennedy noted.

“We will put in newspapers, church bulletins and pictures.”

Visitors to the anniversary event will also learn about the church’s history.

In the 1740s, minister and preacher George Whitfield reportedly preached to 3,000 people who had gathered on the church grounds to hear him. The history

states that Whitfield had to stand in the fork of a walnut tree to be heard. The tree has since been taken down, but a plaque was placed at the base of another walnut tree on the church campus to commemorate the event.

The site also includes a cemetery. “There is a lot of history in this cemetery,” said Kennedy. “The cemetery has veterans buried there from the Revolutionary War and every war this nation has ever been in.”

Wanner noted that current congregation members come from Gap, New Holland, Parkesburg and Honey Brook. Sunday school is held at 9:30 a.m. followed by worship at 10:30 am. A fellowship meal following Communion is offered on the first Sunday of the month.

Pequea Presbyterian Church is located at 273 Cambridge Road, Gap. For more information, search for “Pequeaeco1724” on Facebook. Those with questions may call 717768-3324 or email pequea pres1724@gmail.com.

Chester County introduces Human Needs Network

The Chester County commissioners and the Department of Human Services recently unveiled the Human Needs Network of Chester County, an initiative that focuses on helping residents who are experiencing mental health concerns or a crisis, who are impacted by behavioral health issues, or who are experiencing a housing crisis. At the core of the Human Needs Network is a locally based contact center and mobile crisis resolution teams.

The three pillars of the Human Needs Network of Chester County are someone to talk, someone to respond, and somewhere to go.

Serving as part of the first pillar is a contact center that runs the 2-1-1

information and referral service for those in need of housing, utility, and other human service support. Also, the 988 toll-free suicide and crisis lifeline is a 24/7 service staffed by trained mental health counselors that can dispatch local mobile crisis resolution team members if needed. Both contact center services are based in the county’s Government Services Center in West Chester.

The second pillar, someone to respond, refers to mobile crisis resolution teams that provide aroundthe-clock support, meeting those experiencing a mental health crisis and giving personal peer-led care. The mobile crisis resolution teams are based in the new Equity Health

Center in Coatesville.

The third pillar includes walk-in center services, crisis residential services, and inpatient and outpatient treatment programs. Additional programs may be added in the future.

The Human Needs Network of Chester County was developed with input from leaders of more than 50 local organizations who represent all sectors of the community, from first responders, schools, hospitals, and libraries to nonprofits and veteran organizations, the United Way of Chester County, and county government departments. The cost of the Human Needs Network of Chester County is covered by Chester County’s American Rescue Plan Act funds.

Chester County has contracted with Holcomb Behavioral Health Systems for the 988 suicide and crisis lifeline and with Woods’ Legacy Treatment Services to oversee the mobile crisis resolution teams.

McMullen to manage county parks and trails

The Chester County Parks + Preservation Department has appointed Andrew McMullen as the county’s new parks and trails manager. McMullen moved to this role following

22 years with the department starting as a parttime maintenance worker, becoming a regional park ranger, and later serving as the assistant parks and trails manager.

As the parks and trails manager, McMullen is responsible for the day-today management and operations of Chester County’s seven regional park sites and the three regional trails. McMullen succeeds Owen Prusack, who retired in November 2023 after 41 years with the county government.

McMullen graduated from Penn State University with a Bachelor of Science in agricultural education. He served as a sergeant with the United States

Marine Corps from 2000 to 2006 in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. While deployed, he worked with local governments to build community infrastructure and obtain supplies for schools.

The Chester County Parks + Preservation Department provides preservation, recreation, educational, and stewardship services to the residents and visitors of Chester County so they can connect with natural and cultural resources and thrive in a sustainable healthy community. Commissioners tour tricentennial farm

The Chester County commissioners recently toured Hidden View Farm in Cochranville to recognize the farm’s tricentennial designation.

The Cochran family established Hidden View Farm in 1724 in Cochranville - which is named for the family - after the family emigrated from Scotland by way of Northern Ireland. Current owners Robert and Adrienne Cochran still have the original deeds to the property which were signed by William Penn’s sons.

Over the centuries, the farm has been home to seven generations of the Cochran family, as well as to a thriving crop farm, butcher shop, and beef cattle operation, as well as many horses. Today, Robert and Adrienne farm 35 acres of hay for cattle and horses and lease 75 acres to a neighboring farmer who grows corn, wheat, soybeans, and cover crops. The family also enjoys fox hunting and keeps a kennel of hounds.

To be a tricentennial farm, a farm needs to have been owned by the same

family for at least 300 years. A family member must live on the farm on a permanent basis, and the farm must consist of at least 10 acres of the original holding or gross more than $1,000 annually from the sale of farm products.

As part of the recognition, Chester County Commissioners Chair Josh Maxwell and Commissioner Eric Roe presented a citation to Robert, Adrienne, and daughters Abbey and Emma. In the citation, the commissioners “commended the Cochran family, past and present, for their commitment to Hidden View Farm, their passion for farming, and their contributions to Chester County’s agricultural community.”

Since the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture began the century, bicentennial, and tricentennial farm recognition program in 1977, more than 2,300 farms across the state have been recognized for reaching century and bicentennial status. Hidden View Farm is one of only two to have achieved tricentennial status. The Cochrans initially received their official designation from the Department of Agriculture at the Pennsylvania Farm Show in January.

The Cochran family preserved Hidden View Farm in 2002 through Chester County’s Agricultural Land Preservation Program.

Chester County Farm Guide now available

The 2024 Chester County Farm Guide is now available. The magazine highlights more than 125 family-owned farms and markets throughout Chester County, spotlights the county’s Agriculture Award recipients, and includes a farm product calendar showcasing what is in season. It also provides

tips and resources.

In the annual guide, people may read about Kevin Hicks, recipient of the Duncan Allison Distinguished Service to Ag Award, who went from solving problems in the lab to solving problems on a farm. Also, farmer Robert Todd discusses changing people’s minds about eating local through his Downingtown-based farm, Down to Earth Harvest, which operates on a community-supported agriculture (CSA) model.

Farmer of the Year recipient the Miller family of Birchrun Hills Farm in West Vincent Township is recognized for its dynamic business model, commitment to sustainable farming practices, and local food system advocacy. Kyle Jones of the

Acadian Wine Company in West Grove, formerly Kreutz Creek Winery, talks about the way he showcases Pennsylvania’s robust and varied wine flavors through pairing events, live music, classes, and other immersive experiences.

Other features of the farm guide include family-friendly recipes from Penn State Extension’s Nutrition Links Program, as well as an interview with Chester County Parks + Preservation’s agricultural program coordinator, Geoff Shellington.

The book is free and is available at www.chesco farming.org as well as libraries, township and county offices, Kimberton Whole Foods locations, and select farm stands across the county.

County provides funds for generator at DVCCC

Chester County Commissioners Josh Maxwell, Marian Moskowitz, and Eric Roe recently met with leaders, staff members, and volunteers of the Domestic Violence Center of Chester County (DVCCC) to commemorate the installation

of a new generator at the DVCCC’s headquarters. The generator, important to ensuring that the secure, confidential services of the DVCCC are always available, was funded by a $265,000 grant through the Chester County Department of

Community Development. The funding provided by Chester County for the DVCCC generator came from a Community Development Block Grant authorized by the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act.
