I find it hard to believe that our 2010-2011 season is coming to a close! Today’s delightful and light-hearted Così fan tutte is a fitting end for a season marked with some incredible moments. The heart-breaking final cries of Bryan Hymel as Rodolfo in La bohème and the phenomenal performance of The Atlanta Opera Chorus in Porgy and Bess were certainly artistic high points for The Atlanta Opera. On the financial front, the $9 million bequest from longtime board member Barbara Stewart is an unbelievable legacy for a 31-year-old opera company. Where do we go from here?

I hope you have enjoyed this season as much as I have. Our 2011-2012 season promises to be equally thrilling with Donizetti’s Lucia di Lammermoor; The Golden Ticket, a new opera based on Roald Dahl’s book Charlie and the Chocolate Factory; and Mozart’s Don Giovanni. Please visit the table in the lobby today to renew or purchase a new subscription, or to make a tax-deductible donation.

With Barbara Stewart’s bequest going to endowment and reserves, The Atlanta Opera still must strive to balance our budget with revenue generated from donations, primarily from individuals, and from ticket sales. The bequest provides the Opera with a muchneeded financial foundation, but Barbara’s greatest wish was for her generous contribution to serve as a challenge for others to join her in supporting The Atlanta Opera. The Atlanta Opera’s Annual Fund campaign is in full swing, leading to our fiscal year end on June 30. Donations to the Opera’s Annual Fund ensure that we will continue to deliver to you the art that sings – OPERA! Please consider giving today.

As always, we thank you for your continued support and for your enthusiastic response to our opera productions. Please share your opera experience with family and friends and invite them to attend a performance with you next season. Enjoy Così fan tutte! act i Naples, late 1700s. Early morning. Don Alfonso, a cynical old bachelor, debates women’s constancy with Ferrando and Guglielmo, young officers who insist their sweethearts – the sisters Dorabella and Fiordiligi – are faithful. Alfonso bets that if they give him one day and do everything he asks, he will prove the sisters are like all other women – fickle. Fiordiligi and Dorabella are comparing pictures of their boyfriends when Alfonso pays a visit, bringing news that Guglielmo and Ferrando have been ordered away with their regiment. The two men appear, and the sisters, overwhelmed with grief, bid them farewell. Alfonso is delighted with his plot and feels certain of winning his wager. The chambermaid, Despina, consoles her mistresses and advises them to forget their old lovers with the help of new ones. The girls, scandalized by Despina’s depiction of men as swaggering liars, depart. Alfonso convinces Despina to help him introduce new suitors into the sisters’ favor, then brings in exotically attired “Albanians” – Ferrando and Guglielmo in disguise. Fiordiligi and Dorabella don’t warm to the newcomers at all, Fiordiligi likening her constancy to a rock in a storm, and they take their leave again. The men, confident of winning their bet, are thrilled, and Ferrando sings amorously of his steadfast sweetheart, but Alfonso reminds him the day is not yet over. The sisters have retreated to a garden. Alfonso brings in the “Albanians,” who claim to have taken poison. The women call Despina, who urges them to care for the men while she fetches a doctor. She returns disguised as the doctor, pretends to draw off the poison with a magnet, then watches with Alfonso as Fiordiligi and Dorabella waver under renewed protestations of love.

act ii In the afternoon, Despina urges Fiordiligi and Dorabella to choose their favorite, and each picks the other’s suitor, according to Alfonso’s plan. After the “Albanians” serenade the sisters, Despina and Alfonso give lessons in courting and leave the young people together. Guglielmo, courting Dorabella, succeeds in replacing her portrait of Ferrando with a new charm. Ferrando has no such luck with Fiordiligi, who still thinks guiltily of Guglielmo. Comparing notes later, Ferrando is furious over Dorabella’s betrayal, Guglielmo smug about Fiordiligi’s steadfastness. But Alfonso is not finished yet. Under Despina’s supervision, Dorabella tries to persuade Fiordiligi to give in, but Fiordiligi decides that she and Dorabella must join their lovers at the front. Ferrando appears, however, and wins her over. Now Guglielmo is furious, but the officers still owe Alfonso time: As night falls, he plans a double wedding. The couples are married by a “notary” – again Despina in disguise. As they sign the contracts, the women hear a military march that heralds the return of their original suitors. They force the “Albanians” into hiding and try to compose themselves for Ferrando and Guglielmo, who shed their disguises and enter, dressed as soldiers. Confessions are made by the sisters, and forgiveness is begged. Alfonso bids the lovers learn their lesson, and with a hymn to reason and enlightenment, the day comes to a close.

Così fan tutte: A Flawless Farce By Jack Bona Così fan tutte was the last of the three librettos written for Mozart by Lorenzo da Ponte, the indefatigable scapegoat whose career of diverse occupations ended with his death in New York City in 1839. Da Ponte, by the way, was appointed the first professor of Italian Literature at Columbia University in 1825, and was responsible for establishing New York’s first Italian Opera House, which was destroyed by a fire a few years later. He quoted himself by lifting a line he previously had written for his libretto of Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro, where the cynical old music teacher Don Basilio sings “cosi fan tutte le belle.” This catch phrase can be translated as “all women behave that way.” A literal and gender neutral translation of the opera’s title may also be, “everyone does this.” Its original subtitle, “or the school for lovers,” does not discriminate between men and women, who both can learn to deceive and be deceived, and learn from their experiences.

The first of the three operas, The Marriage of Figaro is the most “overtly comic” and classified as a “comic opera.” The second, Don Giovanni, is described as a “drama giacoso,” literally translated as “jacose drama” whose nature can be defined as “merry, humorous, witty, facetious, joking,” although not so overtly comic because of some serious undertones. Così fan tutte has been characterized somewhat ambiguously as both a comic opera and jacose opera. This jocose aspect should not predispose us to relegate the plot as too unrealistically ridiculous. True dramatic realism was not introduced in opera until almost a century after Così fan tutte’s premiere in Vienna on Jan. 26, 1790. We must indeed suspend disbelief in any semblance of reality as we watch the unraveling of rapid-fire recitatives interspersed with an abundance of enchanting ensembles. These ensembles make our listening to them the ecstatic experience Mozart intended and

which achieves and overshadows any inanities of plot: two men disguised to not be recognized by their fiancées, or a maid disguised first as a male doctor and later as a male notary, or the ability of a magnet to withdraw poison from a near-dying person, or the entire action taking place within 24 hours. Of these three collaborations, it’s ironically curious, as Da Ponte biographer Sheila Hodges states, “Both Mozart and Da Ponte are tantalizingly silent about how they worked together and virtually nothing is known of their collaboration.” We are left to speculate they both conceptualized along the same thought patterns, emphasizing an implicit jocosity of farcical intention. In fact, in the second act Don Alfonso and Despina, catalysts for propelling the plot, in unison (as an aside) declare, “La piu bella commediola no s’e vista o si verdra.” (A more amusing little farce has not been seen nor will ever be seen.)

N O T E S

cultural and historical contexts of their time to counterbalance obvious comic elements. In Così fan tutte the dilemmas Dorabella and Fiordiligi must disentangle are the same vulnerable emotional conflicts some of us may face — a choice between safely conventional, yet unloving, relationships versus a natural, passionate attraction to someone not fully known, which we may or may not be able to suppress successfully. Moreover, at the final curtain, depending on the stage director’s interpretation, the audience is left with an unresolved question: Did Dorabella and Fiordiligi go off with their original fiancés or with the “other” pseudo-disguised young men?

Mozart biographer, W.J. Turner, cogently concludes that Così fan tutte “from a musical point of view might be considered the most perfect and flawless of all his operas.” This appraisal is matched by the comment of musicologist Edward J. Dent, Così fan Thanks to the combined richly imaginative tutte is the best of all Da Ponte’s librettos talents of Mozart and Da Ponte, all three operas and the most exquisite work of art among contain intriguing innuendos regarding social, Mozart’s operas.”

The Atlanta Opera volunteers are comprised of a dedicated group of individuals who are passionate about opera. This season volunteers have completed more than 1,000 hours of service. The volunteers listed here participated in one or more activities including: mass mailings, special events, artist transportation and office administration. Through dedicated performance of these tasks, volunteers gave support far beyond a monetary measure, for which The Atlanta Opera is deeply grateful! If you would like to join the volunteer corps, please contact The Atlanta Opera at 404.881.8801. Myriam Acevedo

And that you take advantage of the latest technology, like digital mammography. During your pregnancy, you took childbirth and early parenting classes. And when your baby was born, you had your very own team of nurses. You even got rid of fibroid pain through the expertise of the Fibroid Care Program. We know your secret. And we’re sharing it so everyone can now say, “Hello, WellStar.”

We believe in life well-lived.
