DESIRE. ABILITY.

THE FIRST-EVER NX TURBO. GO BEYOND UTILITY. Need vs. want. Capable vs. captivating. Sensible vs. spine-tingling. Many luxury crossovers force you to choose utility over style. ach of us has a green girl somewhere inside of us, a green girl yearning for acceptance. So declares the Wizard of Oz, or in this case, the longtime entertainer playing the Wizard in this national tour of Wicked. “Each of us feels alienated or ostracized by some group,” says John Davidson, the singer-actor and one-time game-show host. “Each of us can think of a club or a clique we wanted to belong to but couldn’t. That’s the green girl’s challenge. She’s struggling to be accepted

for who she is on the inside. To an extent, we all have that green girl inside of us.” That’s this Wizard’s theory anyway, and he’s sticking to it. Davidson says he’s having the time of his life playing the role originated by Joel Grey on Broadway in 2003. It makes all the difference that Rhonda, his wife of 32 years (and his former backup singer), travels with him. “I feel very much at the peak of my game,” says Davidson, 73. “I feel like I’m singing better than I’ve ever sung.”

Not that he has a lot of singing to do. He’s onstage for all of 17 minutes. Wicked, he reminds us, “is essentially the girls’ story” – referring to Glinda the Good and her unlikely friendship with Elphaba, the misunderstood green one who becomes the Wicked Witch of the West. It’s nice, Davidson says, “not to have the weight of the show on my shoulders.” He knows what that’s like. His smooth baritone and dashing looks have allowed him to play plenty of leads in shows across the country, from Curly in Oklahoma! and Harold Hill in The Music Man to Don Quixote/Cervantes 12 ENCOREATLANTA.COM

in Man of La Mancha. A personal favorite: the role of family patriarch Charlie Anderson in the Civil War musical Shenandoah. He was most recently on Broadway in 1996 as hog-loving patriarch Abel Frake in Rodgers & Hammerstein’s State Fair. The Wizard in Wicked is “really a minor character, but it’s a great character,” he says. He also admires the show itself, how the storyline introduces nuggets of things we know from the iconic 1939 film and makes sense of loose ends. It also has a message of equal rights, acceptance and how we treat – or mistreat – others.

Glinda expounds on the glories of being popular to Elphaba, who if fare less certain.

People magazine called Davidson “the dimpled darling of television” in 1980 when he headlined the “The John Davidson Show,” a variety show that had a two-season run. But the quick-witted Davidson first won hearts in the 1960s as a regular X and O man on “The Hollywood Squares.” In the 1970s he hosted the “$10,000 Pyramid.” In the early 1980s he co-hosted the reality show “That’s Incredible!” and, in 1986, became the host of “The New Hollywood Squares.” “Those who know me mostly from ‘Hollywood Squares’ didn’t even know I could sing,” he says today. Yet music has always been his

chief passion. He has a nightclub act and does concert tours. He plays guitar and banjo and writes songs. He has more than a dozen solo albums to his name, running the gamut from Broadway to country and pop. He also sings in French and Spanish. A Pittsburgh native who grew up in Brockton, Mass., and White Plains, N.Y., Davidson has a six degrees sort of connection to the epic Oz feature film. Half a century ago and fresh out of college, he played the son in a musical called Foxy, which updated Ben Jonson’s Volpone to the Yukon gold rush of 1898. Playing his father? Former cowardly lion Bert Lahr. ATLANTA’S PERFORMING ARTS PUBLICATION 13

WICKED BITS • Gregory Maguire, who wrote the book upon which Wicked is based, got the witch’s name Elphaba (EL-pha-ba) by combining the initials of L. Frank Baum, the author of the book that started it all, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, published in 1900. • Wicked has nine productions playing around the world. The musical is in its 11th year on Broadway, has been translated into five languages and has been seen by more than 42 million people worldwide. • The Broadway version won three 2004 Tony awards, for best actress Idina Menzel as Elphaba and for its scenic and costume designs. • Sixteen women have played Elphaba on Broadway, including former “SNL”-er Ana Gasteyer. There have been 13 Glindas, including Megan Hilty (Broadway’s 9 to 5, TV’s “Smash.”

Glinda and Elphaba (above) forge a hard-won friendship that is tested when Elphaba (right) decides to go her own way and “defy gravity.”

Foxy ran only three months on Broadway but did launch Davidson’s multifaceted career. TV producer Bob Banner (who helped bring Carol Burnett to TV from the musical Once Upon a Mattress) saw Foxy and saw something in Davidson. He thought I sang beautifully, Davidson recalls, and told me I could have a career like Johnny Mathis or Tony Bennett – but that would mean I would just have a singing career. Instead of being a spear, which has just one prong, he saw me as someone who could be a pitchfork, with many prongs. “He said let’s work on your comedy, your whole act. Let’s do Broadway, let’s do sitcoms, let’s make you into the best game-show host you can be. “He set about developing me as a full package. He wanted to create the character of 14 ENCOREATLANTA.COM

John Davidson as if it were a role.” And now, in a full circle sort of way, he’s returned to making music onstage. “They talk about me for an hour and 15 minutes before I get to leave my dressing room – and I go out there with high energy, as if I’m going into battle,” Davidson says of playing the Wizard. He sees the character as a con man. “I don’t think it’s any secret that the guy’s faking it, that he’s just that man behind the curtain fooling people. He’s a little like Harold Hill in The Music Man, who can’t play a note of music but has conned everyone and is just trying to save his ass.” Davidson hopes to play the Wizard “for years and years.” One thing that keeps him motivated: “I’m still trying to do my best show ever.”

Journey There’s no way to miss the music (top) once you reach New Orleans. Why not consider a trip by train to take in some of its famous 45-yearold Jazz & Heritage Festival, beginning April 24 this year?

W

hen Louis Armstrong recorded “Do You Know What It Means to Miss New Orleans” some 68 years ago, he couldn’t have conceived what his beloved Crescent City would become. Back then “Satchmo” could croon about “moss covered vines,” “moonlight on the bayou” and “magnolias in bloom” in a classic tune that’s been covered by such

greats as Billie Holiday, Rosemary Clooney, Harry Connick Jr. and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band. But times have changed. Today the most resonant music emanating from New Orleans is a hyper-erotic, anti-social genre known as “bounce,” pioneered by a 7-foot-tall gender-bending personality known as Big Freedia. He/ she has his/her own reality show on the Fuse network. And there’s still much curiousity about the

fallout and recovery from 2005’s Hurricane Katrina. There’s another sound you’ll hear, too, the clackety-clack of Amtrak’s Crescent line train, perhaps the best way to ease into a trip to New Orleans, a city where old-school charm rubs up against modern pragmatism. The smooth, rhythmic sway of the train does wonders with those pesky hangovers some French Quarter revelers carry home as a souvenir. Whether you normally travel solo, in groups, with kids or senior citizens, a train ride to New Orleans feels less stressful in comparison to almost any airplane. The original Crescent line started chugging its full-service dining rooms and sleeper cars on a 1,377-mile arc from New York

City to New Orleans — 30 hours one-way — in 1891. When Amtrak took over the rail line, one of its missions was to return the trip to its bygone glory. Over its full length, the Crescent stops in Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., Charlotte, N.C., and Atlanta as it journeys to New Orleans. The Atlanta-to-New Orleans leg is a 12-hour trip. If you’re not in a hurry, it’s a refreshing and reflective way to travel. Crowds at train stations are much smaller than at airports. The pace of boarding is less rushed and the exertion involved minimal. You actually lay eyes on the stewards loading your bags. And for a nominal fee ($5-$10), travelers who want to see New Orleans on two wheels can carry their bikes on board like luggage. Amtrak tickets to New Orleans don’t sell for peanuts the way they do through airline discounters, but the amenities on the Crescent City far surpass a complimentary pack of nuts and a cup of coffee or Coca-Cola. And the scenic route is just that — a meandering trip through the remnants and reformation of the Old South. Below the clouds, chugging along slightly below highway speed limits, it’s clear to see how far Dixieland has come and how far it has to go. Accommodations vary and include Reserved Coach Class seats (wide side-by-side recliners); Viewliner Roomettes (fold-away bunk beds, sink and toilet, full service, meals included); Viewliner Bedrooms (one double bed with a convertible bunk, self-enclosed toilet and shower, separate armchair, etc.); Viewliner Bedroom Suites (four convertible single bunk beds, two separate toilets and showers, sofa, etc.); and Viewliner Accessible Bedrooms (recommended for sleepover passengers with mobility challenges). The fares ($69-$1,000) depend

NEW ORLEANS JAZZ & HERITAGE FESTIVAL This annual event, in its 45th year, might be a perfect occasion to ride the rails to the Big Easy. Here’s what you should know: THE FEST: A 10-day cultural feast in which thousands of musicians, cooks and craftspeople welcome some 400,000 visitors. Music is showcased on multiple stages, Louisiana cuisine is served in two large food areas, and crafts artisans from the region and around the world demonstrate and sell their work. WHERE: At the Fair Grounds Race Course, about 10 minutes from the French Quarter. WHEN: April 24-May 3. HOURS: 11 a.m.-7 p.m. daily. THE MUSIC: The fest celebrates the indigenous music and culture of New Orleans and Louisiana, so you’ll hear blues, R&B, gospel, Cajun, zydeco, Afro-Caribbean, folk, Latin, rock, rap, country, bluegrass, and contemporary and traditional jazz. THE LINEUP: Includes, but not limited to Elton John, Jimmy Buffett and the Coral Reefer Band, Keith Urban, Buddy Guy, Dr. John, the Blind Boys of Alabama, the Preservation Hall Jazz Band, Rebirth Brass Band, Buckwheat Zydeco, the Terence Blanchard E-Collective, Cassandra Wilson, Alison Krauss & Union Station, and Lady Gaga and Tony Bennett. TICKETS: $58 plus fees in advance, $70 at the gate for three-day weekend passes. $5 (gate only) for ages 2-10 with an adult. More expensive packages are available as are travel packages, at www.nojazzfest. com, www.ticketmaster.com, all Ticketmaster outlets or 800.745.3000.

GET COOKING What fan of New Orleans cuisine wouldn’t want to let out with a “BAM!” or “I guar-RON-tee it” in the same vein as the city’s most famous chefs? If that’s you, consider taking a kitchen tutorial from a local master. Your options: NEW ORLEANS SCHOOL OF COOKING: Novice chefs and tourists go hands-on to learn to make gumbo, jambalaya, pralines and other local delicacies. Hands-on classes take place Sunday, Tuesday and Friday. Daily demonstrations run 10:30 a.m.-noon and 2-4 p.m. Monday-Saturday. Details at 1.888.726.0115 or neworleansschoolofcooking.com. CRESCENT CITY COOKS! Rotating lessons in preparing appetizers, entrees, desserts and cocktails. Daily classes start at 10 a.m. The gift shop sells utensils that range from clever (chopsticks for kids) to quirky (high-heeled-shoe wine bottle holders). Details at 504.529.1600 or crescentcitycooks.com. NEW ORLEANS COOKING EXPERIENCE: Cajun cooking classes can be taken on a half-day, episodic or weekend-getaway basis. Details at 504.430.5274 or thenoce.com.

on your choice of dates, departure time and seating arrangements. So climb aboard, then relax. Unless you have strong, private Internet connectivity, prepare to unplug for the duration. The Crescent line isn’t among the 21 Amtrak trains with free Wi-Fi and does not yet have a designated, staff-monitored Quiet Room, either. Why not avail yourself of the scenery and the food and drink available instead? The kitchen staff on board serves breakfast ($7.50-$11.25 for scrambled eggs, Railroad French toast, omelets); lunch ($9-$12 for salads, burgers); and dinner ($15.75-$24.75 for steak, pasta, chicken and seafood entrees) from a set menu with as much attention as possible to riders’ personal preferences and dietary restrictions. Kids’ meals ($3.75-$7) are simple and comparable to fast-food fare. Since Dining Car seating is limited, attendants go seat-by-seat to cordially request reservations. In the first-come, first-served Lounge Car, diners can eat in or take out, perk up with caffeine or sip a cocktail. The Café Car is a fuss-free oasis for a quick snack or drink, including alcohol. Riders needing a shot of

48 ENCOREATLANTA.COM

courage heading into the Big Easy or some hair-of-the-dog heading home can get wine by the glass or half-bottle ($6 and $15), beer ($5$7) and mixed drinks ($7 each). Upon arrival, New Orleans’ levies break wide open for feasting, historical reverence, souvenir shopping and random debauchery. But beware. If you’re strolling Bourbon Street at night, heavy handfuls of stringed beads could come crashing down on you even if it isn’t Mardi Gras and you didn’t bare your breasts to request them. To be frank, New Orleans’ fabled French Quarter has the look, feel, sound and smell of a tourist trap patrolled by police on horseback and a crush of people testing their ability to laissez les bon temps rouler. But the city’s best-known and underappreciated attractions have something in common. They all invite you to follow your passions. For comprehensive New Orleans visitor information, visit neworleansonline.com A. Scott Walton is a lifestyle, sports and fashion writer/editor who has been on staff at The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Detroit Free Press and The Tennessean in Nashville. Heaven Nature’s the saving grace of Georgia’s best public golf courses

ark Twain got it all wrong when he dismissed the game of golf as “a good walk spoiled.” Golf actually presents ideal opportunities for soaking in spectacular scenery and spying on natural wildlife while you futilely pursue the perfect swing. With Georgia’s weather (at the descretion of course managers) you can swing year-round. When Golf Digest editors and readers ranked the 100 best public courses in America for 2014, two Peach State landmarks (Sea Island Golf Club on St. Simons Island and the Golf Club of Cuscowilla in Eatonton) made the list at Nos. 36 and 56. In Golf Digest’s roundup of the best places to play on the planet, Augusta National ranked near the top. The members-only home of pro golf’s fabled Green Jacket finished No. 3 on the Hot 100 list.

50 ENCOREATLANTA.COM

And let’s not forget the three public courses at Château Élan near Gainesville. You can stay and play, taking in some of the resort’s other amenities or take your swings at the par 71 Château Course, with its three lakes and two streams; the Par 72 Woodlands Course; or the 9-Hole Executive Par 3 Course. You must be a guest to play the Legends Course. Details: chateauelan.com/. But let’s bring the game intown, or thereabouts. Metro Atlanta abounds with esteemed and accessible public courses that celebrate nature and all it offers. Here’s a select list. the site that once was home to Cherokee Indians. The narrow, Zoysia grass fairways are barely traceable amid thick pines. Natural outcroppings of granite and 96 craftily placed sand traps add to the par 72 course’s degree of difficulty. GolfNow magazine calls Cherokee Run “one of the area’s toughest tests” due its firm, fast putting surfaces and elevation changes. THE FROG (AT THE GEORGIAN) This Tom Fazio-designed sanctuary in Villa Rica is endorsed by the Audubon Society because of its respect for preserving natural park land. Golf Digest rates the Frog at 4½ stars (out of 5). The course has welcomed a number of high-profile celebrity, charity and Pro-Am events. Brandnew baseball Hall of Famer John Smoltz putts there, as do any number of sports personalities. Playing from the Blue tees, you’ll be challenged by 6,239 yards of high-arching pines, staggered ponds, undulating fairways strewn with sand bunkers, and slick putting greens. BOBBY JONES GOLF COURSE On clear days, golfers can scan the Atlanta skyline for a panoramic perspective of this

83-year-old course’s charms. Ancient oak trees loom wide and low over fairways where Civil War skirmishes once took place. The course was carved from 36 acres of city land and dedicated to the legendary grace and influence of the great Robert Tyre “Bobby” Jones Jr. Just 10 minutes northeast of downtown, Bobby Jones takes full advantage of Peachtree Battle Creek. An 18-hole round on the par 70, track entails tee shots over the semi-still creeks on the first and final holes. BEAR’S BEST (SUWANEE) This course combines the design instincts of golf’s all-time major championship leader with the corporate/communal amenities that modern consumers demand. Golf magazine ranks Bear’s Best as Georgia’s 13th-best course. Over 6,857 yards, through fairways of varying widths, players are challenged to shoot par (72) on a combination of Jack Nicklaus’ 18 favorite holes. Six holes are meant to mimic the look and feel of scenes where the Golden Bear, as Nicklaus is known, sealed a third of his 18 major tournament victories on both U.S. and British soil. CLUB AT SAVANNAH HARBOR Don’t let its affiliation with Westin resorts fool you into thinking this course is easy. The 7,288-yard venue has seen serious competitions for years. This course, along the inlet shores of Georgia’s coast, presents visual challenges like shifting sea waves, soggy marshes, bunkers filled with bleached-white oyster shells and putting greens that appear flat but roll deviously into the water or thick rough if not approached carefully. Ranked No. 6 on Golf magazine’s list of Georgia’s Best Public Courses this venue is a garden of good and evil for your skills. REYNOLDS PLANTATION With lodging and amenities by Ritz-Carlton, the Reynolds Plantation in Oconee strives for pre-eminence as Georgia’s ultimate “stay-andplay” spot. Considered one of the state’s prime locations for luxury hunting, fishing and relaxing, Reynolds’ six courses rank No. 6 on Golf magazine’s list of Georgia’s best. Geniuses of course design and construction — Jack Nicklaus, Tom Fazio, Rees Jones, Bob Cupp and Jim Engh — combined to create 117 holes of varying length and difficulty. All six courses rim the banks of Lake Oconee and its tributaries. The sloping nature of the coastal topography presents players with the highest risks for hazardous shots.
