Legendary actress Judith Ivey enjoys being in the driver’s seat by kristi casey sanders

A

s an actress, Judith Ivey has won Tony, Drama Desk and Obie awards for her work on and off-Broadway (Hurlyburly, The Lady With All the Answers), appeared in popular television shows (“Designing Women,” “Nurse Jackie”) and films (Flags of Our Fathers,The Devil’s Advocate). But the legendary performer says she has a new passion: directing. “In some cases I have chosen directing over acting because it intrigues me more right now,” Ivey says. “It’s got a bigger learning curve, and I like to challenge myself.” That’s why she felt compelled to send an e-mail to Alliance Theatre’s Jennings Hertz, Jr. Artistic Director Susan Booth last year, reminding her that she’s a director, too. “And you know,” Ivey laughs, “timing is everything. She called to ask if I’d like to read a script and meet the playwright, and I said, ‘Yes.’”

6

EncoreAtlantA.com

That script turned out to be Carapace, a 90-minute piece by David Mitchell Robinson that won last year’s Kendeda Graduate Playwriting Competition. A play she couldn’t put down. “I was completely mesmerized by all the characters, especially the lead character, Jeff,” Ivey recalls. “It’s a beautifully written story, very compelling. It’s definitely a tragedy, but he’s such a charming, charismatic guy that has a way of speaking, and his attempts to make everything all right and joke [things] off … it’s really something.” Exploring character is one of the things she enjoys most about the rehearsal process, whether she is acting or directing. “It’s all just an exploration of character,” she explains, from the way actors approach their roles to how a designer lights a scene, constructs a set or builds a costume. The difference is that when you’re acting, no one expects you to focus on

anything other than your part. Ivey’s unusual ability, as an actress, to see the big picture is what led to her first directing job in 1993, when she was asked to direct Two for the Seesaw at the Westport [Conn.] Playhouse. She hasn’t looked back since. Working on new plays is a particular passion of hers. “When people ask me what my favorite play is, I often say, ‘I don’t know because it hasn’t been written yet,’” she laughs. While she was appearing onstage as Amanda Wingfield in The Glass Menagerie with the Center Theatre Group in Los Angeles last fall, she also spent some time working on Carapace with playwright David Mitchell Robinson. “Center Theatre was kind enough to give us a twoday workshop, at the end of which we gave a formal presentation to an audience,” Ivey says. The play read in California was a slightly different version than the one that won the competition. But one thing remains the same — the central metaphor of the carapace. “The fact that the carapace is the shell that protects the tortoise is a great concept

about how we deal with things in our lives — how protected we are; how naked we are,” Ivey explains. “Sometimes that shell has to go away, and we need to be vulnerable. There are times we think we are protecting ourselves in a good way or protecting others in a good way, and we are not.”

What’s the story? Jeff tries to make up for a lifetime of bad parenting by bringing a birthday gift to his estranged daughter. The fact that he has no idea where she lives is only the beginning of his troubles.

Why this play? Carapace drew in the Kendeda judges from last year with its brave characters and terrific storytelling, in addition to the skill of its playwright. It’s firmly in the American tradition of Williams, O’Neill and Miller with its examination of one family. However, it is the humor and insight of its author that makes it a uniquely contemporary theater event.

Why Atlanta? We all know a Jeff — at work, at home or perhaps ourselves, someone struggling with an addiction. In whatever region of the country you live, Jeffs are universal.

Why now?

In 2007, a bridge collapsed in Minneapolis —Minneapolis, which prides itself on civic care and upkeep, not to mention the ability to withstand harsh weather conditions. The bridge quickly became a larger symbol of the fragility of the American infrastructure. This play resonates with the tenor of our times, but grounds these larger social and metaphorical concerns in one man’s journey through the night.

Following their Atlanta premieres, the Alliance transferred Twyla Tharp’s Come Fly Away to Broadway for a critically acclaimed Tony Award®-nominated run while Sister Act: the Musical will arrive on Broadway this season after its run on London’s West End. The Alliance also originated the national tours of The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee and Bring in ‘da Noise, Bring in ‘da Funk. The Alliance enjoys a national reputation for finding and developing Atlanta artists for the national stage, including New York Times bestseller Pearl Cleage whose The Nacirema Society Requests the Honor of Your Presence at a Celebration of Their First One Hundred Years was the latest of Cleage’s Alliance world premieres. Further evidence of the Alliance’s commitment to new work is its nationally recognized National Graduate Playwriting Competition, a cutting-edge program introducing student playwrights to professional networks across the country while producing the world premiere of the winning student’s work here at the Alliance. Work by past Competition winners has gone on to be produced by theatres in New York, Chicago, London, San Francisco and beyond. The Alliance continuously brings Atlanta the finest talent and finest art—proving once again that the Alliance is where great theatre lives. The Alliance Theatre is a division of the Woodruff Arts Center in Atlanta, Georgia, which also houses the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, High Museum of Art and Young Audiences.

Our Mission As a leading national theatre, the Alliance Theatre sets the highest artistic standards, creating the powerful experience of shared theatre for diverse people. 404.733.4650 or alliancetheatre.org http://facebook.com/AllianceTheatre

Carapace C

and the Kendeda National Graduate Playwright Competition by celise kalke

arapace is the unusual new play that revisits grand themes of the American theatre in a new way: the family, addiction, personal tragedy, the fallen man. These are the footprints of the American greats: O’Neill, Miller and Williams. This play takes on these themes with humor, with craft and a 21st-century wit and style. It is one man’s journey that has larger metaphoric and social underpinnings. The play is also a reminder that, even over 70 years after the founding of Alcoholics Anonymous, alcohol abuse and addiction remain a grave American social issue.

“The lie of a pipe dream is what gives life to the whole misbegotten mad lot of us, drunk or sober.” — Eugene O’Neill, The Iceman Cometh

About the Alliance Theatre’s Kendeda National Graduate Playwright Competition The Kendeda National Graduate Playwright Competition is a oneof-a-kind national competition that transitions student playwrights to the world of professional theatre. The grand prize for the winner of the competition is this production you will see tonight. Each year, the country’s leading graduate playwriting programs across the country are invited to have their final year students submit a play. An in-house panel of readers selects a slate of finalists to be advanced in the competition. Those scripts are sent to a national panel of three theater artists who serve as advisors to Artistic Director

EncoreAtlantA.com

Susan Booth to choose the winner. The panel selection for Carapace consisted of Jim Nicola, Artistic Director New York Theater Workshop, Mark Valdez, playwright and John Dillon, freelance director. The program was founded to give writers emerging from graduate school a springboard to their writing careers, and over the past seven years the competition’s alumni have more than fulfilled this goal. In the spring of 2011 the Alliance Theatre will produce Spoon Lake Blues by Kendeda finalist Josh Tobiessen, the first time a Kendeda alumni will be returning to the Alliance Theatre.

Hello, gorgeous. Where did you get that healthy glow? We hear you believe in taking care of yourself inside and out. That you get heart and lung cancer screenings. And that you take advantage of the latest technology, like digital mammography. During your pregnancy, you took childbirth and early parenting classes. And when your baby was born, you had your very own team of nurses. You even got rid of fibroid pain (with just the tiniest of scars) through uterine fibroid embolization (UFE). We know your secret. And we’re sharing it so everyone can now say, “Hello, WellStar.”

We believe in life well-lived.
