mory & Henry is a fortunate place. See, we have something that’s one of a kind—something you can’t find at any other school in the world. We have you. A lot of yous, actually. Emory & Henry isn’t a college filled with pre-assembled, mold-fitting automatons—it’s made up of yous. Yous who are as unique as you, with distinctive thoughts and ideas. Yous who are more than a test score or a GPA. Yous who are nothing like you. Now this concept might seem rather odd, but it’s true. We understand when a soon-to-be you considers whether or not you will fit in, you base part of your decision on our established reputation. And we’re okay with that, because at Emory & Henry, we know you will be a perfect fit. That’s because our reputation is not about us. Our reputation is about you. And it’s one that is built upon every you who has attended Emory & Henry since 1836. To be precise, Emory & Henry is home to a lot of yous, around 1,000, as a matter of fact. Each you is one-of-a-kind and brings a set of qualities to our lovely Virginia campus no one else can. Every you comes with specific character traits and is equipped with thoughts and ideas that will never be duplicated. You will work to achieve the results of your unique vision. You will enjoy the support of faculty and fellow students, and you will have an unprecedented number of resources to craft the you you’ve always wanted to see in the world. From this day forward, Emory & Henry belongs to you, and your contributions to the campus community define our legacy.

our Emory & Henry experience will be one not only of reading and learning, but also of seeing and doing. And there’s no better place for seeing and doing than Southwest Virginia, where you’ll be at the center of a cultural and historical location you’ll want to get to know up close and personally. In fact, it’s easy to get lost on the way to Emory & Henry. Not literally, of course (current GPS technologies can easily prevent that), but with so many extraordinary destinations at your disposal, getting to campus might prove difficult.

Here...

Nestled snugly within the highlands of the Appalachian Mountains, Emory & Henry is located in the village of Emory, a quaint community consisting of quiet, tree-lined streets and friendly neighbors. Party central it is not, but Emory’s reserved nature is perfect for staying focused (we know, we know, you want to learn, after all). But your brain will need a break and you’ll need nourishment. Feed that fire inside with scrumptious comfort food at Macado’s, a downtown eatery located in the historic Addison’s building. And when you need some new swag, head to the Emory Mercantile Company. Our school store, located in the Emory Village, is stocked with school apparel, gifts and, oh yeah, some books, too.

When it’s time to let loose, you won’t need to go far for some serious playtime. Just 15 minutes from campus, you’ll find historic Abingdon’s charming downtown district. True Southern hospitality is on display as you roam red brick sidewalks and explore the town’s many shops and local eateries. Described as the best mountain bike trail in the east, The Virginia Creeper Trail offers a 34.3-mile rail-to-recreation trail that starts in Abingdon and ends just past Whitetop Station at the Virginia-North Carolina border. The Rooted in Appalachia program connects you to businesses that offer vibrant and exceptionally high-quality meat, poultry and dairy items produced on family farms across the region. The natural beauty along the banks of the South Holston River offers tranquil spots to sit back and unwind. If your purpose is passionate performance, you’ll want to storm the stage at Barter Theatre, the nearly 100-year-old State Theatre of Virginia that provides educational opportunities to the Emory & Henry College Theatre Department.

& Everywhere

& There...

Pop quiz: school’s out, what’s your #1 priority? Correct answer: road trip! Hitting the highway in any given direction will lead you to our neighboring cities, buzzing hives whose denizens are equally devoted to business and pleasure. Just a short drive away, Marion, Virginia— home of the historic Lincoln Theatre—offers small-town charm and a ton of local flavor. Asheville, North Carolina, known for its arts and crafts, incredible restaurants and Biltmore House is less than two hours away. Head west into the Great Smoky Mountains of the Volunteer State and you will discover

Knoxville, Tennessee, a city distinct for its urban charm and natural allure, as well as Tennessee’s Tri-Cities—Bristol, Johnson City and Kingsport. Bristol is home to the Birthplace of Country Music Museum, the happening and historic downtown State Street and the annual Rhythm and Roots Music Festival. Set just northeast of Emory & Henry in the Blue Ridge Mountains is Roanoke, also known as “Star City of the South.” This city of 100,000 prides itself on merging traditional culture with youthful energy and is home to hundreds of festivals, performances and special events every year.

Y

ou’re going to get tired at Emory & Henry— possibly to the point of covering your face with your hands and openly declaring, “That’s it, I’m done. None of this even makes sense.” This will surely happen after: cramming for your Introduction to Philosophy midterm; pulling an all-nighter writing an insightful thesis comparing and contrasting The Pardoner to The Wife of Bath in The Canterbury Tales; staying up all hours honing your skills at Mindcraft; intense critical thinking, ethical reasoning and oral communication. After all this, you’re going to be drained. And there’s only one thing left to do.

And just as we’re here to assist you in making connections, we will also do everything we can to help you unplug. (Bringing your phone is suggested for taking pictures of some truly unforgettable moments. Just wait ’til the trip’s over to post them to your Instagram.)

Outdoor Program

If you love the idea of a nature-focused future, the Emory & Henry Outdoor Program is the perfect solution. Trips are hosted nearly every weekend year-round and will introduce you to

backpacking, paddling, cross-country skiing, caving, rock climbing and more, all while teaching the concept of sustainability and cultivating ecological awareness. Emory & Henry is home to a three-sided, 40-foot-tall climbing tower and indoor climbing crag, as well as recently updated athletic and physical education facilities. It’s important to note that you don’t need to have scaled Mount Everest to participate. As a matter of fact, the only requirement is a good vibe.

You’re sure to encounter some amazing wildlife while exploring the great outdoors, but you’re also certain to encounter the fallout left behind by those notorious litterbugs. As a beacon of positive change, the Outdoor Program has instituted a reclamation initiative to remove junk from local forests, streams and mountains. Saving the world begins with you. No cape necessary.

All Trails Lead to You

With the Appalachian and Iron Mountain trails, George Washington and Jefferson national forests and New, Holston and Clinch rivers all nearby, Southwest Virginia is prime real estate for outdoor and environmental studies.

Our back yard is an outdoor adventure just waiting to happen. You’ll be able to exercise mind, body and spirit all while earning college credit through Emory & Henry’s Semester-A-Trail program. By taking advantage of this unique opportunity, you step out of the walled classroom and into the world’s classroom, hiking the entire Appalachian Trail while completing a course schedule individually designed for you.

Be the Links

If you’re the sporting type, but traditional golf isn’t really your thing, then try your hand at the PDGA-registered 18-hole disc golf course we constructed in the summer of 2006. This challenging course will treat you to spectacular campus views all while engaging in a skillful game of concentration and execution. If you prefer to play in the sand, show off your skills in the sand volleyball court, conveniently located near the outdoor fire pit.

Hitting the Books

We know what you’re thinking: Private college. Great reputation. Must be expensive. E&H professors have won 17 state or national faculty teaching awards, with five professors winning multiple times. The Center for College Affordability & Productivity ranked E&H professors among the Top 25 faculties in the nation. But Emory & Henry also enjoys a reputation for keeping costs manageable. Approximately 92 percent of all the other yous receive financial aid and 80 percent receive need-based financial aid. Whether your sights are set on becoming a research scientist, travel editor, missile systems engineer or healthcare professional, you’ll have access to generous financial aid and scholarship packages that will help keep costs at bay. Emory & Henry College Honors Program is open to students with a wide range of intellectual interests with majors from across campus represented. The program offers unique academic opportunities, encourages service to the community, and provides access to study abroad experiences. Also offered is the Intermont Equestrian Program at Emory & Henry, a competitive riding program, with 18 national championships since 2001, including IDA (2014 and 2015), IHSA and ANRC. Not only does Intermont Equestrian offer competitive riding, but it also offers the chance to earn a B.A. or B.S. in Equine Studies.

More Power to You

Less isn’t always more. Sure, when it comes to money in your pocket, time in the day and cheese on your pizza, more is undeniably a good thing. But at Emory & Henry, less gets you a whole lot more than you ever bargained for. Inside the classroom, a student-to-teacher ratio of 11:1 and an average class size of 14 students allow you to engage easily in discussions and present those brilliant ideas of yours. This also means professors will have more time outside of class to devote to one-on-one discussion with you. Your voice will be heard.

Serving a Passion & Serving a Purpose

Being bored is boring, so we’ve made it nearly impossible for that to happen. Whether you’re working together with your fellow yous or wishing to stand apart and do your own thing, Emory & Henry’s 40+ active student organizations and activities allow you to follow your passions outside the classroom. That can mean employing your leadership skills as part of student government, spinning obscure, avant-garde, dubstep tunes on WEHC 90.7 (the college and community radio station) or channeling your inner Kerouac for our literary and art magazine Ampersand. And if none of our offerings quite fits your interests, you are free to start your own club. We’ll help make it happen!

You’ll also be pleased to know that either/ or is not a philosophy we actively advocate. At Emory & Henry, doing what’s best for you doesn’t come at the expense of doing what’s best for your community. You’ll grow here by “doing.” You’ll build relationships that empower you and others. And you’ll design and test solutions through undergraduate research, community engaged work, student athletics and activities, and other integrative, hands-on work. A President’s Award recipient, our college is nationally recognized for its commitment to service learning and civic engagement, and we currently have five organizations devoted to assisting both the campus and local communities.

Change Starts with You

Service learning at Emory & Henry isn’t some trendy buzzword or a stuffy requirement. Here, a commitment to service underlies everything you do—from servicing your goals to assisting others in need. There are no boundaries to when, where and how you can make a

A National Leader

In fact, we know that service is so important to you, we let you major in it. Emory & Henry offers two distinctive degree programs designed to help you build strong communities: a bachelor’s degree in Civic Innovation and a five-year B.A./M.A. in Community and Organizational Leadership (M.A. COL). I guess you can say we’re kind of a big deal when it comes to service learning. That’s right, thanks to service-minded students like you, Emory & Henry has become nationally renowned as an outstanding college for civic engagement. Newsweek listed E&H among the Top 5 nationally for Service Learning and Community service in 2013. Only 25 schools out of more than 3,000 nationwide received this designation. Plus, in 2011 USA Today included us on its Top 20 list. In 2009, we were one of six institutions nationwide to receive the President’s Award for our service to communities throughout Southwest Virginia. This award is the highest national recognition for service learning and it demonstrates our commitment to community and college partnerships. High-fives all around.

difference. Students regularly volunteer and work with Remote Area Medical to provide free healthcare in Appalachia. Just recently, Emory & Henry students raised money to build a sliding-scale health clinic nearby, developed programs to address community needs across the region, and traveled to Costa Rica to study animal habitats and ecosystems.

The Bonner Scholars Program, a premier scholarship program at Emory & Henry College, offers 20 scholarships annually to qualified students. In return, students engage in 10 hours of community service and enrichment events each week. At E&H the Bonner Program is one of countless opportunities to affect the lives of local residents, regional culture and the environment around you. n

Appalachian Center for Civic Life (ACCL)— Located in the historic Collins House, the ACCL creates partnerships between student groups and local rural communities. You can turn volunteerism into social activism by finding your passion among our expansive list of programs and initiatives. Community Sparkplugs—Part of the College’s collaboration with The Rensselaerville Institute, the program utilizes volunteers to construct water and sewer systems in areas where conventional approaches are not cost effective. More than 3,000 Virginians now have access to public water and sewers.

Environmental Sustainability—At Emory & Henry, blue and gold make green. You can help with our many sustainability initiatives by joining an environmental student organization, enjoying one of our LEEDcertified buildings or getting your hands dirty in our college garden. WEHC Radio: 90.7 FM—Our college radio station is also a community radio station. WEHC-FM, run by students, staff and faculty, brings public radio to a wide swath of Southwest Virginia, while also devoting a portion of programming to local entertainment, news, interviews and discussions. n

& Focus

f you haven’t started yet, you should start keeping track of how many times you’re asked about your major. Your parents, grandparents, friends, weird uncles, dates, co-workers, counselors and whomever else is going to inquire about your major. While it might earn you a funny look or two, we encourage a simple one-word response when faced with the “Ugh-”inducing “What are you going to major in?” “Me.” “Me!? What kind of major is ME!? That won’t get me a job!” Sure it will. It’s going to do better than get you a job. Remember all that talk about where you’ll be five years from now? A major in “you” is going to get you to five years from now, five years from then and five years from after that. From undergraduate research and pre-professional programs to transformative internships at local, regional and national corporations and agencies, you get to build your own Emory & Henry experience, with your own unique focus.

Applying What You Know…

Island, with the intent of collecting plastic debris while allowing marine life to pass through unharmed. Pretty cool, right? What super, Earth-loving collective came up with this righteous plan? The reality is it was a Dutch teenager named Boyan Slat. The moral of the story is this: start today. Your time at Emory & Henry will give you valuable insight into what comes next and prepare you for the challenges ahead, but you provide the greatness, which started long ago. Don’t wait until you’re out of college to put these universealtering ideas to the test. Once on campus, you will work alongside peers and nationally recognized professors to bring the vision inside your head out into the world.

& Discovering What You Don’t Our pre-professional programs are not for the faint of heart (one might say they’re

“rigorous”). But they must do the trick, because Emory & Henry graduates enter graduate or professional school, here and at other top universities across the nation.

Pre-Health

You’ve heard that healthcare careers are in high demand. Our pre-health program provides an excellent preparation through a potent foundation of liberal arts combined with rigorous (there’s that word again) scientific training. That combination allows you to choose any of our majors en route to becoming a healthcare professional. In addition to medicine, career opportunities include dentistry, pharmacy, physician assistant, physical and occupational therapy, clinical psychology and social work. You can enter a number of specialty areas within each of the health professions.

Pre-Law

How are you at arguing? (Or should we ask your brothers and sisters?) Our pre-law courses focus on developing your skills in presentation and oral argument, while promoting interdisciplinary thinking. Many of our prelaw students major in political science with a complementary second major, which at Emory & Henry can be anything from economics to biology. Pre-law students spend quite a bit of time in the updated Caliopean and Hermesian rooms in Byars Hall—two of the most beautiful and fascinating rooms on campus.

Woodrow W. McGlothlin Center for the Arts

The Woodrow W. McGlothlin Center (MCA) is a state-of-the-art facility opening in 2015, and there are so many ways for students to be involved at E&H. Whether you are watching visiting artists demonstrate their techniques, working the lights in a theatre department production, playing in one of E&H’s many music ensembles, hosting your own radio show or just being a member of the audience,

the MCA has something for you! Both majors and non-majors are encouraged to audition for scholarships.

To Be Contin-YOU’d

The impact of your Emory & Henry experience doesn’t end at graduation. It’s no coincidence that E&H graduates enjoy individual support from our office of career services when exploring jobs related to their fields or into a graduate or professional program. Until we’re able to brag about your accomplishments, let us brag about a few talented, inquisitive and successful yous that came before you: n

Despite the vast social and technological differences between the 19th-century landscape and Earth today, Emory & Henry remains a constant—standing as a monument to the region’s past and a symbol of our trek toward a momentous future (one in which you will be a key participant). When you’re here, you will be as vital as the two men who shaped our principles of faith, learning, service, honesty and community: Bishop John Emory, an eminent Methodist bishop known for his visionary approach to active learning; and Patrick Henry, a Revolutionary War patriot and first governor of Virginia, who is best known for his poignant and Twitter-friendly quote, “Give me liberty, or give me death!”

& Now…

Then…

14

Today’s world is a much different place from the one that existed when Emory & Henry first opened its doors to students in 1838. The railroad that led to the settlement of many Southwest Virginia towns? Still hadn’t been laid. Interstate 81? Not even close to an idea, because of, you know, the whole cars-not-beinginvented thing.

Emory & Henry is for the birds. It’s true. Ducks remain a fixture on campus year round thanks to a naturally heated pond that’s fed by a spring near Wiley Hall. The Duck Pond has become a traditional luncheon spot for students and faculty, and like other school customs, such as the Running of the Bulls and the Service Plunge, it will become part of your fabric, just as you will add to its legend. When setting foot on Emory & Henry’s 367-acre campus, you receive a unique living and learning experience that blends classic architecture, natural scenic beauty and modern advancements. The oldest college in Southwest Virginia, Emory & Henry is included on the Virginia Register of Historic Landmarks and one of few schools listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Our newest buildings are models of sustainable architecture, all constructed to be Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certified.

“Where do you see yourself five years from now?” This common interview question drives interviewees crazy, because every day that goes by means another tomorrow that’s five years down the road. Maddening when you think about it, right? We’d say, “Don’t sweat it,” but there’s a chance you will—and rightfully so. And it’s okay, because you’re not alone. The good news is you have 180 years of experience and a whole lot of yous to reach out to as you work to bring your vision to fruition at Emory & Henry. From this day forward, Emory & Henry belongs to you. Whatever comes next, it’s important to remember the future is whatever you make it—so make it a good one.
