INSIDE

EM M A U S R D We get our name from one of the most beautiful stories in the bible: ‘Two of them were going to a village called Emmaus… Jesus himself came up and walked along with them; but they were kept from recognising him.’ Luke 24:13-16

Jesus disguises himself in normality, joining us on our journey through life, entering conversations, sharing our meals and gently revealing his love.

Who is the third who walks always beside you? When I count, there are only you and I together But when I look ahead up the white road There is always another one walking beside you. TS Eliot, The Wasteland

02

Those two commuters only realised that Jesus was with them when he broke bread in their home. It’s often as we show hospitality, share time together and as we take communion together at Emmaus, that we recognise Jesus Christ, alive and active in our midst. ‘He took bread, gave thanks, broke it and began to give it to them. Then their eyes were opened and they recognised him.’ Luke 24:30+31

WELCOME This is an exciting New Year for Emmaus. We’re so glad you’re with us. Emmaus is one community with 3 Sunday Services on 2 sites in Guildford. Last year we grew dramatically, starting two new services, moving into St Mary’s Church and the Founder’s Studio, taking 15% of the church to Vienna and even more to Focus. We also launched a Leadership Training Programme and prayed like mad! We love that people often become Christians at Emmaus and so we run Alpha every term for those who want to find out more about Jesus and what it means to follow him. We also pray together regularly as a church with Kingdom Come events, 24-7 Prayer seasons and special prayer nights and groups. We also have loads of fun with youth activities and this term we will be hosting our now famous Burns Night Party – don’t forget to get your tickets! We’re especially excited about this term’s #Credo series, explaining the heart and soul of true Christian faith as we journey through the season of Lent to Easter. Its great to have you with us on the Emmaus Rd. Come and say hello, We’d love to meet you.

OUR S TO RY

IN THE BEGINNING...

WILD FIRE

Our story begins with the official launch of the 24-7 Prayer movement in a dodgy Guildford nightclub called Bojanglez 16yrs ago. The club has now been demolished, but 24-7 Prayer is still going strong, having reached more than half the nations on earth.

As 24-7 Prayer rooms multiplied around the world, everyone from Rolling Stone magazine to the Archbishop of Canterbury suddenly got interested. Channel 4 made a TV documentary about our mission in Ibiza and our first "boiler room" community in Reading received a government award.

ROOM AT THE INN

HOUSE OF PRAYER

JOIN US

Finding ourselves accidentally at the heart of a global movement, we began to meet in the Stoke Pub. Achmed, the landlord, turned out to be from...Bethehem which seemed highly appropriate.

When we outgrew the pub we moved into the Electric Theatre, an old power station. It seemed appropriate because 24-7 Prayer communities like ours are multiplying globally, known as Boiler Rooms, and our vision is to bring God's power and light to the city.

Discover more about our story in the book Red Moon Rising, by coming along to our next Welcome Party or to our annual 24-7 conference in October.

YOUTH & KIDS SUNDAYS

As well as worshipping together with the whole church community, we run a range of activities for kids and young people. We even run a crèche for all ages up to 3yrs so that parents can sit back, relax and enjoy the meeting.

COOKING CHAOS

Thursdays, 4.30-6pm at Allen House (School YRS 4-6) A fun (and chaotic) couple of hours at Allen House preparing and eating food together, playing games and having a look at the bible.

YOUTH CLUB

10

Safety of children is paramount. All Emmaus Youth Workers are fully DBS checked and subscribe to a thorough Safeguarding Policy.

Fridays, 7-9pm at The Founders Studio (School YRS 7-9) Our popular youth club includes loads of fun games, Xbox, table football, a tuck shop and loads of time to hang

out with friends. We also have a chat about what it means to be a Christian.

YOUTH COLLECTIVES

Weekdays, various locations (School YRS 10+) We spend time together, eat cake, chat about the bible and generally have a good time in various small groups around Guildford! For more details on getting involved in a youth collective, chat to Matt!

BOOTCAMP

Monthly on Saturdays, 9-11am (School YRS 4-6) Each month we head off on a little adventure or attempt a challenge to help us think about what it means to follow Jesus. We've given out free lemonade, trekked across the surrey hills, been on scavenger hunts and more!

As well as all of this we always have loads of other stuff going on like trips out, Soul Survivor and other fun stuff. Keep an eye on the website, Facebook and Twitter for more info!

P RAY E RF UL Because our focus is Jesus, we try to be a prayerful people - a House of Prayer for our city, our nation and our generation...

UR IO N R E L AT I O N A L We throw parties, run loads of fun youth activities, offer hospitality, feed students, care for those enduring life's tough times and actively support families.

MISSIONAL We run Alpha and Family Outreach, offer debt counselling, visit prisons and our local hostel for the homeless, serve local schools and send mission teams all over Europe.

13

14

FA M I LY O U T RE ACH ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink (…) or needing clothes and clothe you? When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’ “The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’ Matt 25: 37-40 Family Outreach aims to care for people in Guildford through friendship, support and activities. Many families are struggling financially and have limited or no other support. We are able to stand in the gap. We provide hampers loaded with food, activities and vouchers to keep children entertained during school holidays. We also offer help with painting, gardening or removing rubbish and even provide furniture and we are always ready to offer a listening ear and friendship. Recently, because of Emmaus' generosity, we had the pleasure of taking some families for their first holiday together and we are planning on taking more families on holiday in 2016. We also offer an even greater level of support by linking with other organisations including Christians Against Poverty (CAP), Prison Chaplaincy, and Ready for Action - part of the Matrix Trust.

14

Mike Stanbrook is on the Chaplaincy at HMP Send and he supports prisoners and staff with church services, Bible studies and social events. During difficult times such as bereavement and coping with prison life, some prisoners need extra care. At these times Mike meets to support and even pray with prisoners. Sophie Oliver and Emma Cumper from Emmaus have started an initiative within Vaughan House (a hostel for the homeless). Every Tuesday evening they chat, have coffee, play games, watch football and even pray with the residents. The staff have said they feel it gives the residents 'a sense of hope'.

This is a revolutionary money management course that teaches people budgeting skills and a simple, cashbased system that really works. This course can help anyone to get more in control of their finances in order to budget, save and prevent debt.

MARRIAGE PREPARATION

THE MARRIAGE COURSE

READY 4 ACTION

This is a 6 session course. It is generally run in people's homes, ideally on consecutive weeks however, we can be flexible. The course offers a great opportunity to make the best possible start to married life. Food is involved in most cases. The emphasis is very much on promoting discussion between the couple in total privacy.

Starts 3rd March 7.30pm at Allen House

30th April - 2nd May

A 7 session course held at Allen House. Each week you will be served with a meal at a table for two while listening to practical, informative and fun talks and working through exercises together with enough space for privacy! There is never any group work and you will never be asked to share anything about your relationship with anyone other than your partner. This course is not necessarily aimed at couples going through difficulties, but at anyone at any time who wants to strengthen their marriage.

For more information or if you would like to do one of these courses please contact info@emmausrd.com

A community action project run by the Matrix Trust, started in 2000 to encourage young people to help out in their communities by doing practical jobs like gardening, decorating, removing rubbish, demolishing sheds (only unwanted ones though!) and ultimately demonstrating God's love in real, practical ways.
