This is a season of history making at Emmanuel College. From our early days of George Floyd Taylor’s dream of establishing a school in hopes of one day having a fully accredited college in Franklin Springs, we now look around and find ourselves in another season of making history. As I recently shared with our student body, history makers have big dreams and reach high. They are willing to sacrifice to achieve, and they see challenges as opportunities. History makers realize there is a God factor. The God Gap, as I call it, is the space for miracles to happen. It is where we see God work! We are seeing God at work, and now is the time to join us in our widespread effort to grow forward to take Emmanuel College to the place of dreams. As we wrap up our new $10 million athletic center, we are seeing strong participation from so many students, alumni and friends, as well as nearly all our employees plus all our board members. They understand the importance of what God is doing here. Together, we are part of making history! It is not too late to join us. As you turn the pages of this special edition of Quad, you will see opportunities to get involved and join so many others in growing forward. We are committed to moving Emmanuel College forward in a way that is in God’s will and honors Him. Whether you can commit to praying along with us in this effort or pledging to help us finish well, we want to thank you. We appreciate your continued partnership and support. News& Events Roberson Hall flooring earns national award The terrazzo floor in the common area of Emmanuel’s Roberson Hall won a national honor for David Allen Company in Raleigh, N.C., from the National Terrazzo and Mosaic Association, Inc. (NTMA). The focal point of this award-winning flooring is a great spreading oak tree, and entries were judged on creativity, design and quality of craftsmanship. Of the 43 entries across the country, David Allen Company netted five of the 14 NTMA honor awards given this year—no other terrazzo contractor has ever won five NTMA honor awards in one year. In fact, David Allen Company has won double the number of NTMA honor awards of all other terrazzo contractors in the Southeast combined. “Winning awards is an expectation,” Robert Roberson (’53) says. “We expect to perform at that level and expect to be that good.” Roberson has been with the company since 1957, and more than 35 of his family members have attended Emmanuel College since his first semester there in 1951. Completed in August 2011, Roberson Hall is named in honor of Croswell and Pearl Roberson, the parents of Robert, chairman and CEO of David Allen Company, and his brother, David Roberson (’69), senior vice president. Robert and David provided major funding for the construction of the residence hall and are also providing terrazzo installation in Emmanuel’s new $10 million athletic center. Dr. Deborah Stark selected as Governor’s Teaching Fellow

Dr. Deborah Stark, associate professor of music at Emmanuel College, has been selected to participate in the 2012-13 Governor’s Teaching Fellows (GTF) program at the University of Georgia. Established in 1995 by Gov. Zell Miller, GTF works to improve the quality of instruction offered at all colleges and universities Dr. Deborah Stark in Georgia by moving college faculty members to the leading edge of instructional practice.

New teaching techniques are vital for today’s students because technology is constantly changing. Teachers who are selected to attend this distinguished program contribute to and learn from each other. “I am eager to learn how I can be a more effective teacher and hope I may return the honor by pouring back and investing in the Emmanuel community,” Dr. Stark says. “I am especially excited about connecting with other fellows throughout Georgia as we share, grow and encourage one another.” Dr. Stark holds a B.M.M. from Ozark Christian College, an M.M. from Pittsburg State and a D.A. from Ball State in vocal performance. She is the director of Emmanuel Arts Academy and sponsors EC ACTS. She teaches applied voice, vocal pedagogy, history of church music and musical theatre. In addition, she is extremely involved with the community. “We are thrilled that Dr. Deborah Stark has been selected as one of this
year’s Governor’s Teaching Fellows,” says Dr. John Henzel, vice president for academic affairs at Emmanuel. “She is well deserving of this honor, and we know she will represent Emmanuel well.” Emmanuel faculty members previously invited to participate in the program include Dr. Mike Luper, Paula Dixon and Jennifer Benson. In fact, both Dixon and Benson are invited back each year to present to current fellows. “GTF gave me a renewed excitement and energy about discovering new ways to help my students learn,” says Dixon, associate professor of communication at Emmanuel. “Mrs. Benson and I are honored to go back each year to share with current Fellows about how we are taking what we learned at GTF and are successfully using that with our students.” One thing is for sure, the faculty members at Emmanuel are passionate about educating their students, and that is a mission fit with GTF.
Jessica Caldwell After going on a mission trip to China while attending Emmanuel, Jessica Caldwell (’11) could not wait to go back. When she graduated from Emmanuel with a B.S. in English education, she and her husband, Jeffrey, did just that. They now work at an international school where she teaches middle and high school English, and he oversees the computer labs. She also chairs their Curriculum Committee for grades Pre-K through 12. Reflecting on her time at Emmanuel and her calling to be an educator, Caldwell says she appreciates her teachers and how she grew as a believer. “One thing I am grateful for is the encouragement by the education department to be a lifelong learner,” Caldwell says. “My desire to constantly learn has afforded me many opportunities in my career. “Emmanuel also helped me have a stronger relationship with Christ. I could not live in China without this. While at Emmanuel, I had the opportunity to be in Singers, and my relationships with the people in that group helped me probably more than any of them ever knew,” she adds. Jessica and Jeffrey spend time teaching other children by volunteering in understaffed orphanages. They also teach English at local churches through a program called English Corner, where students learn English through biblical topics. Through this method, many Chinese people come to know Christ.
Recently, Caldwell was asked to coordinate the opening of a new American school, and she says she hopes this will be complete within the next two years. The Caldwells do not represent an organization or denominational missions department. They simply sensed God’s call to go there, and they obeyed. “First and foremost, I see myself as an educator, and that is my calling,” she says. “I love the Chinese people and really enjoy serving them while I am here.” -by Lynn Huhn and Andrea Langley

After graduating from Emmanuel two years ago, Aaron (’10) and Amber (Evans) (’10) Maxwell moved to South Korea. They work at Taejon Christian International School in Daejeon where they serve as assistants to the dorm parents for the school’s middle years program dorm. Their jobs include caring for students and teaching them about Christ through daily devotions, discipleship, mentoring and monthly dorm church times. “We feel that the spiritual growth we experienced while attending Emmanuel has been the most valuable asset in our ministry,” Amber says. While most of the students are not believers, Aaron and Amber share Jesus through their daily responsibilities and through coaching. Aaron is the school’s junior varsity boy’s basketball coach, and Amber is the girl’s varsity soccer coach. Amber played soccer for Emmanuel for four years, and they both served as intramural team captains. “In our roles as intramural captains, we learned tactics and leadership skills that have aided us in coaching high school students,” they say. Aaron and Amber, who were married last summer, encourage students and others to be receptive to opportunities that might come along. “Be open to God’s calling on your life, no matter where it takes you. There is so much we would have missed out on had we shut down a door that God opened,” they say.

AlumNotes 1960s John W. “Bill” Williams (’62) Bill is the author of the new book Poetry in Flight. He has been composing poetry for 47 years, with his works published in small press magazines and literary journals. A native of Hancock, Md., he received his education at Piedmont College, Emmanuel College, and the University of Georgia. He is a member of The Georgia Poetry Society. He co-authored a collection of children’s stories with Sylvia H. Sexton, who retired from Emmanuel in 1996, called Eyes of Adventure, which was placed in the archives of Emmanuel College. In 1994, the Banks County Public School System honored Bill for his outstanding service and dedication as an educator. He is a retired educator of language arts and children’s literature.

Vince Callahan (’84) Vince Callahan has been a professional Christian counselor for 28 years. He earned his master’s degree in counseling from Regent University and is enrolled in their Doctorate of Education program with an anticipated graduation of 2013.

Chad Moon (’99) Rwanda holds a special place in the lives of Chad Moon and his wife, Jamie. Jamie worked for two years at The Well, a coffee shop at their church created to help people of Rwanda reconcile after the drastic genocide in 1994. They have watched God provide through their efforts and helped raise money to build an orphanage as well as a house for the pastor who runs it. He was born March 23, 2012, weighing 7 pounds, 10 ounces and was 20 inches in length. He joins big sister Halynn Breanne Rhodes, age 3. 2000s Rebecca (Mills) Schweitzer (’03) Matthew and Rebecca (Mills) Schweitzer announce the birth of their son, Griffin Grayson Schweitzer, born October 12, 2011. He joins big brother Owen, age 2. In 2006, Rebecca also graduated from Regent University School of Psychology and Counseling. Matthew, a 2005 graduate of Lehigh University, is an educator in the Lower Merion school district in eastern Pennsylvania and the youth director at Wayne United Methodist Church in Wayne, Pa. Griffin and Owen spend days with their mommy and attend weekly playgroups. Rebecca is the daughter of Ronald (’68) and Pamela (’67) Paynter Mills, both graduates of Emmanuel College.

Amber (Bennett) Dixon (’10) Amber (Bennett) Dixon of Elberton, Ga., graduated with honors in May 2012 from the Medical College of Georgia with a bachelor of science in radiologic sciences with a major in radiation therapy. Amber would like to give a special thanks to all the wonderful instructors and staff who impacted her life in such a positive way during her time at Emmanuel College.
We Remember Stephanie Ellen Morgan (’87) went to be with the Lord Friday, Aug. 3, 2012, after an extended battle with cancer. Survivors include her father and mother, the Rev. Dr. Hugh (’53) and Melvine Morgan, and her brother, Gregory H. Morgan (’84), all of Winder, Ga. Stephanie also lived in Winder and taught for 21 years at Statham Elementary School. She was an active member of Cornerstone Church of God in Athens. “For almost 11 years, Stephanie allowed God to use her as a testimony of the awesome work of God displayed in her life,” her father says. “She felt she was on a mission to minister to cancer patients in the oncologist’s clinic when she went for chemo or radiation therapy. She prayed for others with cancer and other physical needs.” Officiating at her service were the Rev. Scott Sheppard, senior pastor, Cornerstone Church of God; Presiding Bishop A. D. “Doug” Beacham Jr., the IPHC general superintendent; Bishop Wesley Russ, superintendent of the IPHC Mid-Atlantic Conference; and the Rev. J. Brian Williams, pastor of Christian Life Worship Center in Athens.

Rebecca (Sorrow) Campbell (’06) Rebecca Sorrow became Rebecca Campbell when she married her best friend of 12 years on April 14, 2012. They lived in the same neighborhood for much of their childhood and rode the same bus from eighth grade through high school. They live in Athens, Ga. Rebecca works at Kroger and her husband is a laborer with Athens Housing Authority.
