Emerald Necklace Conservancy

2016 ANNUAL REPORT

CONNECTING PEOPLE AND PARKS

Our mission: To restore and improve the Emerald Necklace for all.

Dear Friends, The impact of your support has never been greater. The daylighting of the Muddy River, the care and maintenance of hundreds of trees in the Emerald Necklace and an expanded stewardship and education program are just a few examples of what we accomplished together in 2016. In late summer, for the first time in 60 years, the Muddy River once again flowed freely above ground along parts of the Back Bay Fens and new parkland was created on the site of a former parking lot, signaling the completion of Phase I of the Muddy River restoration project. This milestone was spurred on by the early advocacy efforts of our then-nascent Emerald Necklace Conservancy as we embarked on the mission in 1998 to restore the Muddy River and improve the Emerald Necklace parks. The new parkland will make its debut in spring 2017 as the Justine Mee Liff Park, named in honor of the late Boston Parks Commissioner who championed the renewal of Olmsted’s Emerald Necklace. There is much more to do and we are committed to working with stakeholders and partners to advocate for full bank-to-bank restoration. Collaborating with our partners, Boston Parks and Recreation, the Town of Brookline and the Department of Conservation and Recreation, we planted 174 trees in the parks and along the parkways, completed a river bank stabilization project in the Riverway, and pruned and cared for hundreds of trees throughout the Necklace using the Conservancy’s Tree Management Plan to inform our work. Find out more about projects that your support made possible beginning on P.2. Our education programs, central to our mission, expanded in 2016. Recognizing the Emerald Necklace as an outdoor classroom, we introduced “Canopy Classroom” a place-based, environmental education program—consistent with Boston Public School science curriculum standards as well as the state standards—to connect Boston youth to the relevance and importance of science in the real world and in their daily lives. Field trips brought students into Franklin Park where they took part in hands-on activities to learn about trees. On Pages 4 and 5, you’ll read more about how our educational programs that engage young people from toddlers to teens are making an impact.

Thank you for your support.

Karen Mauney-Brodek President

Ben Taylor Chair

Karen Mauney-Brodek was hired as Conservancy president in late spring 2016 and began on August 15th. A native of Atlanta where she grew up near an Olmsted park, Karen succeeded long-time president Julie Crockford. Karen came to the Conservancy from San Francisco where she served as a program and project manager for the San Francisco Parks Department. Before that she was chief of the Design Build Program in the Design & Construction Division of the New York Department of Parks and Recreation. She holds a BA from Columbia University and a Masters of Architecture and a Masters of City and Regional Planning in Urban Design from the University of California, Berkeley. 1

Then & Now: Welcome Back, Muddy! The Conservancy’s early and ongoing advocacy efforts to restore the Muddy River were the driving force behind the Muddy River Restoration Project. Above left, circa 1920’s view of the Muddy River and original Olmsted-designed wooded island before this section of the river was put underground. Above right, current view showing the rebuilt island after completion of Phase 1 of the project which included daylighting of the river. 150 Red Oaks were planted along the Emerald Necklace Parkways in partnership with DCR thanks to a donation from the firm of Ropes & Gray. It was the Conservancy’s largest planting project to date.

The Conservancy funded a bank stabilization project in the Riverway in partnership with the Town of Brookline to prevent erosion along the Muddy River between Longwood Avenue and the Bridle Bridge. Coir logs, loam and seed were used to stabilize the banks.

Members of the Massachusetts Arborists Association, in cooperation with the Conservancy, Boston Parks and Recreation Department and the Town of Brookline, donated their time, expertise and equipment for a day of tree pruning in the Riverway.

Gerry’s one-man show as Frederick Law Olmsted inspires audiences of all ages. Watching the faces of people in the audience who love the parks but may know little of the genius of their 19th century designer is a touching and humbling experience. Research tells us that spending time in nature is important for child development and growth. The Canopy Classroom brings elementary students into the Emerald Necklace to connect with the natural world through hands-on science-based activities. They learn about trees, the air and water using all of their senses to gain an awareness of the environment around them.” –Kent Jackson, Director of Education

Volunteers are the lifeblood of the Conservancy. From the leadership of the Board and the Party in the Park Committee Chairs to the invaluable input from Overseers and Council members and dedication of the docents, volunteers provide invaluable service and support on behalf of our organization. These individuals are central to our mission and we are so grateful for all that they do.” –Karen Mauney-Brodek, President
