Where can your Emily Carr degree take you? Kara started in the Continuing Studies Design Essentials program, and then continued through the undergraduate and graduate degree programs before becoming a design researcher in Munich. π CONTINUING STUDIES DESIGN ESSENTIALS CERTIFICATE PROGRAM π BACHELOR OF DESIGN IN COMMUNICATION DESIGN π MASTER OF APPLIED ARTS

For me, there are many connections that have been meaningful and continue to play a role in my life. My cohort was extremely supportive during the gruelling journey of a graduate degree. My advisor was in a different discipline so she provided eyes that allowed me to see new potential in my work and practice. The applied aspect of my research took me to Rwanda so the people I engaged with during this time have shaped my view on the world incredibly. Beyond this, being a graduate student gave me license to ask questions of people all over the world in order to learn and grow as a designer and person.

Emily Carr held elements that mattered to me: pioneering and flexible, local yet international.

What kind of connections happen at Emily Carr? Samantha graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Critical and Cultural Practices – a degree that opened her up to her current community-based practice – and is now heading off to New York to start graduate studies this fall. π BACHELOR OF FINE ARTS, CRITICAL + CULTURAL PRACTICES π FREELANCE DESIGN, COMMUNITY PROJECTS π MFA TRANSDISCIPLINARY DESIGN, PARSONS NEW SCHOOL, NEW YORK

Critical + Cultural Practices allows students to gain a broad understanding of the world around them and engage critically with those issues. Combined with the space minor, it was a way for me to activate and engage my community with my practice. I developed a proposal for a local asset mapping project that became the intense focus of a directed study, and subsequently won a grant from the Vancouver Foundation. Later, the project was acquired by a local start-up, and we worked together to bring it to a level I never imagined. I never knew that such an expansive University could have such a tight-knit and cohesive community; I am very grateful to be a part of it.

My Emily Carr internships opened me to a professional world that helped launch my career, and the networks and connections through the Emily Carr Students' Union were an excellent asset.

EXCHANGE PROGRAM

As a second year student, you can apply to become an exchange student for one semester during your third year at nearly 70 art and design partner schools in North America, Europe, Asia and Australia. (Please note that students who transfer to Emily Carr at the third-year level are not eligible.) It’s a great way to try out a new city, make connections and explore future professional possibilities. CO-OP PLACEMENT WHERE LULULEMON ATHLETICA WHO NEIL MCMILLAN, NICOLA FULLER + KATHERINE PIHL WHAT

How can you get experience developing your craft? This trio of communication design students worked together as professional practicing designers for lululemon lab – a retail concept store for lululemon athletica. We were in charge of designing and developing three installations that would engage the public within their retail space. We worked closely with the art director at the lab, along with the store manager and clothing designers. Emily Carr set us up for success. In our core design classes, we all had plenty of experience working with clients and giving presentations, which really helped when it came to presenting our design concepts in a cohesive and strong way at the lululemon lab. We came out of this experience with a passion for spatial design and retail advertising. We also have new industry contacts and finely polished professional work to add to our portfolios.

Art, media and design are changing rapidly with new technologies, new modes of expression, and new opportunities for research and employment. HEALTH DESIGN RESEARCH EMILY CARR + UBC COLLABORATION WHO MIMI LAW WHAT

WHERE

How can design improve people’s health? Emily Carr is committed to providing design opportunities to students and faculty through collaborative partnerships that apply solution-focused, human-centred research methodologies to complex problems. For her graduation project, Industrial Design major Mimi Law worked with engineering students and researchers at the University of British Columbia to design a new solution for home-based physiotherapy. My grad project addressed rehabilitation for adults and children with weakness on one side of their bodies. We wanted to develop a home-based therapy and transformed the PlayStation Move controller into a bi-manual controller using social network games as motivation. My research showed that ease of use and ergonomics are the most important factors contributing to the users' sense of control, helping them to improve performance and have fun. Through the project, I connected with an interdisciplinary team of engineers, physiotherapists and kinesiologists. It was so rewarding to work toward a common goal but from different perspectives.

I had plenty of opportunities to work collaboratively and in interdisciplinary teams – a very valuable experience in preparing for life after graduation.

EMILY CARR’S ABORIGINAL OFFICE FOSTERS LEARNING EXPERIENCES AND APPROPRIATE SUPPORTS FOR ALL STUDENTS, FACULTY AND STAFF.

Emily Carr’s Aboriginal Office fosters and creates learning experiences for all students, faculty and staff. Our Aboriginal curriculum is interdisciplinary and encompasses both the traditional and contemporary artistic expressions of Aboriginal peoples. Courses include studio practice, art history, critical theory and industrial application. To attract the best-qualified applicants, Emily Carr University awards a limited number of entrance scholarships to new domestic and international students who show high academic achievement and creative potential. FACULTY OF VISUAL ART + MATERIAL PRACTICE (CERAMICS), SSHRC GRANT RECIPIENT

How can you contribute to research? Paul Mathieu is an internationally renowned artist whose work explores the social, aesthetic, and material possibilities of ceramics and craft-based art in the contemporary global context. He has recently received a major grant from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) for a three-year collaborative project with Emily Carr students. The funding makes it possible for me to collaborate with student assistants whose knowledge and expertise will serve in exploring the relation between ceramics and digital technologies. These students will have an opportunity to work with me and an international team of artists, scholars and industry partners from the Australian National University in Canberra, the Namjing Art Institute, and the Huaguang Zibo Factory in China. Together, we will explore the relationship between ceramics, visual art, and digital fabrication and communication technologies. In addition to receiving financial support for their participation, students will be able to access resources and expertise to advance their own work and knowledge in these areas.

I am so excited for this team to come together and explore at the intersection of digital and traditional practice.

What can hands-on experience mean for your future? Brigitte Lochhead found that her two gallery and exhibition co-ops deepened her understanding of the art community she was getting ready to enter. At the Catriona Jefferies Gallery, I was the assistant preparator, physically preparing the gallery and works for exhibition. For raw data, I was in charge of documenting a collaborative project for Canadian artist Ingrid Koenig and German artists Elvira Hufschmid and Margit Schild. I was also the head preparator, and contributed to discussions that surrounded the project. Both co-ops gave me real experience working in a commercial gallery with artwork that I had previously only seen through photographs.

These jobs allowed me to be a student and ask a lot of questions, pushing me beyond the classroom and into the community that I’m now working within.

FOUNDATION PORTFOLIO

All applicants to Emily Carr University must submit a portfolio as part of the admission process. This year, we are asking students to create a body of work on the theme of community. We want your project to focus on your understanding of community: living in a community, building a community, supporting a community, engaging with a community. Your project should focus on the complexities of communities, including social, political and geographical considerations. THINK ABOUT

π your relationship with your community, and how your art work can

enhance and engage your community.

π how to create something to build a community around. π what creative tools can strengthen the understanding and exploration of

community values and increase community involvement in social change.

WHAT TO SUBMIT

Your body of work may include any combination of media: two- and threedimensional, traditional and/or non-traditional materials and techniques, video and sound, and/or digitally generated media. Be inventive with your ideas and include at least two or more forms of different material or media explorations. We also want to see your process so please include images from a sketchbook or workbook. We are looking for students who are curious, passionate, think critically, willing to learn, work hard, experiment and explore.
