Education, energy and biotechnology are main pillars of agreement It all transpired in less than three months: the visit, the proposal, negotiations and the signing of a Cooperation Agreement between Chile and the state of Massachusetts on December 1, 2011. President Piñera and Governor Deval Patrick --the first African-American to be elected governor of this state—recognized a clear connection between their respective governments’ pursuit of new opportunities in the areas of science, entrepreneurship and energy. The Chilean president expressed interest in the vast potential offered by Massachusetts, where some of the most productive academics in the world conduct their work and where the greatest number of patents and technology licenses are granted in the United States. Support for entrepreneurs and after school childcare among highlighted programs Two representatives from the Work and Participation department of Chile’s National Women’s Service (SERNAM) were invited by the Embassy of Chile to learn firsthand about current programs in the United States aimed at promoting female entrepreneurship and the economic development of women. During the third week of November, SERNAM officials María Jesús Jaqueih and Soledad Valdés were able to directly experience, share knowhow and establish contacts with their American counterparts in both public and private organizations responsible for innovative initiatives aimed at a greater inclusion of women in the workforce. Massachusetts: a great partner for Chile

n December 1 in Santiago, an agreement was signed between Chile and the state of Massachusetts. This is not just another cooperation agreement. Chile very carefully sought it out, proposed it to the perfect partner and this Embassy devoted much energy into negotiating it and getting it signed in record time. With an enthusiastic response by Governor Deval Patrick, the second agreement between Chile and a U.S. state --California being the first-was born.

What makes this agreement special? Its emphasis on knowledge. Chile needs to build strong minds in order to move towards development. With this document, our country is now in the best position to take advantage of one of the most vibrant sources of knowledge in the world. Chile will contribute its professionals, experience and attractive innovation programs to this mutually beneficial cooperation initiative. The areas covered by the agreement-- education, energy and biotechnology-- were selected by President Sebastián Piñera and agreed upon together with the new U.S. partner. Massachusetts is the site of some of the most prestigious universities in the world, the most active and successful laboratories in engineering and medicine, and home to lecture halls where an impressive number of Nobel prizes have been awarded.

The data confirm this. Businesses in Massachusetts devote more than US$13 billion to corporate and federally-sponsored research, creating a climate for innovation that is among the most research and development (R&D) intensive in the world in terms of percentage of GDP. The state has the highest level of investment in advanced technology in the United States – four times the national average and more than 35% higher than its nearest competitor. Its universities, academic health centers and research institutions, many of which are non-profit, attract more than US$ 3 billion annually to finance research in advancing the frontiers of knowledge. Its educational institutions grant the highest number of engineering degrees per capita in the entire United States (40% more than the state ranked immediately below Massachusetts) and the students rate among the best in the world on international science and mathematics tests. The privileged position Massachusetts has earned in both national and international rankings guarantees many opportunities for Chile. The state and semipublic structure offers vast possibilities in terms of grants for foreign entrepreneurs. Innovation is being systematically nurtured in New England, birthplace of the U.S. independence movement and prominent statesmen like presidents Adams, Roosevelt and Kennedy. Harvard and MIT form part of the agreement with Chile, further enhancing this document’s power. MIT signed a special agreement with CONICYT and an ambitious working plan with the Harvard regional office for Latin America has been endorsed. For Chile, then, an association with the most illustrious and intellectually most awarded state in the United States underlines one of our foreign policy priorities: knowledge. Without discounting the valuable ties with other U.S. states, our current relationship with the United States places a high priority on education, entrepreneurship, science and technology, bilateral cooperation and cooperation with third countries, and innovation. The agreement signed with Massachusetts was built on an already successful relationship between Chile and the United States in terms of political trust and free trade. When President Piñera and Governor Deval Patrick shook hands, they entered into a pact for the future that is deeply connected to knowledge.

The Embassy of Chile in the United States immediately assumed the task of bringing this agreement to fruition. Energy. In a meeting with the Minister of Energy Rodrigo Alvarez, discussion focused on collaboration on renewable energy, energy efficiency and smart grids. Technical delegations from both sides held working meetings where advances were made in defining joint projects.

Lunch at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Under Secretary Fernando Schmidt hosted a lunch for the visiting delegation at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. There was mutual interest in creating a strategic alliance.

At CONICYT. In a meeting with the President of the National Commission for Science and Technology (CONICYT) José Miguel Aguilera, joint efforts were assessed, especially in the area of astronomy. Collaboration between CONICTYT and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), which began with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the two institutions, was also evaluated.

Business. The Chilean American Chamber of Commerce (AMCHAM) organized a working breakfast, during which Governor Patrick highlighted the strengths of Massachusetts in education, energy, and innovation and cooperation efforts with Chile in these areas.

Innovation. Innova Chile was one of the Chilean institutions that welcomed the governor of Massachusetts in order to explore possible joint efforts.

Elqui Valley. In a private activity, the governor visited the Elqui Valley in the region of La Serena together with ambassadors Arturo Fermandois and Alejandro Wolff and their wives.

These include grants, purchasing of stocks and the creation of loan-based incentives.

From page 1 | Office of Women’s Business Ownership, part of the U.S. Small Business Administration, was a highlight. This organization is responsible for establishing and overseeing a network of Women’s Business Centers (WBCs) throughout the entire United States. The WBCs provide technical assistance to economically disadvantaged women, offering training and counseling to help them start their own businesses. The SERNAM officials were given a guided tour of the Washington D.C. Women’s Business Center.

It was also very interesting to learn about the After School programs, which establish centers for school-age children so that they have safe areas to learn and grow once school ends, allowing their parents to work a full day.

In order to see these programs firsthand, the Chilean officials visited the District of Columbia’s After School Alliance and the Office of Out-of-School Time Programs. At the Sitar Arts Center, they were able to witness the efforts of a childcare center that focuses on developing artistic activities. The center relies on a comprehensive infrastructure that makes it possible to offer classes in theater, dance, painting and photography.

There was an active exchange of points of view on various topics, ranging from the regional agenda to specific aspects of Chilean domestic policy and Chilean-U.S. relations.

Senators Carlos Kuschel and Fulvio Rossi and journalist Matías del Río visited Washington D.C. between October 17 and 21 at the invitation of the Embassy of Chile. The visitors attended different fora and examined various topics on the Chilean political domestic agenda as well as international issues. The Council of the Americas hosted a roundtable discussion including representatives from U.S. firms and research centers specializing in Latin America. Issues concerning Latin American integration and relations with the United States were introduced and debated. Partici-

pants also focused on the current domestic situation in Chile. The visitors, together with representatives from the Department of Education, research centers, universities and private university coordination bodies, participated in a meeting on higher education, organized especially by the Embassy. The main theme of the meeting was the current education debate in Chile and solutions that have been proposed within the United States on similar issues.

The education issue was also addressed during a reception hosted by the Chilean Embassy. Visitors exchanged ideas with education experts from the White House, the Educational Sector research center and with Congressional advisors. There was a general consensus, somewhat of a surprise to those present, on the similarities between the problems that exist in both Chile and the United States with respect to the quality of education, costs, the debate on equity and the drop-out rate, and the level of debt incurred by students and their families.

Largest produce trade show in the United States

Also present were President of Chile’s Exporters Association, Ronald Brown, President of the Federation of Fruit Producers, Antonio Walker, and the Director of ProChile, Felix de Vicente.

The PMA Fresh Summit trade show opened on October 14, an annual event that brings together the most diverse selection of produce suppliers from across the world. This year the fair was held at the International Convention & Exposition Center in Atlanta, Georgia. The trade show, the largest of its kind in the United States, brought together more than 18,000 attendees including major importers and exporters from all across the Americas and the world, producers, transport and logistics companies, and wholesale and retail businesses. This year, Chile was a principal actor from the very beginning. The country played a major role by sponsoring a large booth that emphasized the country’s strengths as an agricultural and forestry power. The booth displayed Chile’s wide range of products and helped to position Chile as a trustworthy provider of fresh fruit and foodstuffs to the world. Many Chilean producers and exporters attended the trade show, where they gathered up-to-date information on the industry within the United States and, in turn, were able to

Simultaneously, there was a meeting of Chilean agricultural attachés in the United States, Mexico, Central America and Brazil. They discussed various activities being developed by the export sector to open markets, in addition to working protocols that would allow Chilean products to enter the country without the need for fumigation.

Top Chilean financial officials at the IMF and World Bank meetings in D.C. Since 2010 Chile has represented Argentina, Bolivia, Paraguay, Peru and Uruguay on the Board of Governors of the International Monetary and Financial Committee of the IMF This past fall, downtown Washington D.C. was literally invaded by thousands of economists from every corner of the world. The city was brimming with top financial and monetary representatives from themost advanced economies in the world as well as emerging countries. They all came together in the U.S. capital to participate in the annual meeting of the International Mo-

netary Fund and World Bank. During these meetings, world economic leaders reviewed the current global economic system, advances in poverty eradication, the effectiveness of assistance policies in poor countries, and economic development. This year, attention was paid primarily to the eurozone crisis. Chile was represented at these events, held from September 23

through 27, by Central Bank President, José de Gregorio, and Minister of Finance, Felipe Larraín. They held a series of meetings with global experts and other government representatives. The purpose was to examine the growing international uncertainty stemming from the debt crisis in the eurozone and its impact on emerging economies, such as Chile, in addition to analyzing possible measures to address the situation.

Entitled “Bodies and Spirals,” the show is comprised of a series of large oil paintings on canvas created during 2011 by the Chilean painter, engraver, illustrator and author Mario Toral. The exhibition –which will be on display until January 13— opened in the Art Salon of the Embassy of Chile in Washington D.C. on November 22 before a large crowd. Ambassador Fermandois remarked that he was, “impressed by Toral’s work which unites painting with literature, texts and images. He is

Mario Toral was born in Santiago in 1934 and has dedicated himself to art since he was very young. Second Meeting of Chilean Scientists in the United States Chilean researchers meet at MIT to exchange ideas about scientific future of country The second meeting of Chilean scientists in the United States was held on September 30 and October 1 in Boston, home to many prestigious academic institutions. This was a follow-up to the inaugural meeting held last year in Washington D.C. As with that first meeting, this gathering was organized by the Embassy of Chile in the United States and Nexos Chile-USA. The Massachusetts Institute of Technology welcomed more than 70 participants to its Picower Center. Among those present were directors from the National Commission for Science and Technology (CONICYT), the Millennium Scientific Initiative, the Imagen de Chile Foundation, and the National Association of Postgraduate Students, all of whom came directly from Chile. Also attending the meeting were world class Chilean professors from Harvard University, UCLA, the University of Massachusetts, the University of Maryland, Catholic University of Chile and the Mayor University of Chile. They spoke to Chilean researchers presently at different stages in their education from various academic and research centers throughout the United States.

Land use that promotes greater diversity in mammals and other animals that favor a “healthier” ecosystem must be considered. First Anniversary of the Chilean Mine Rescue is remembered by its main players Management workshop and premiere of the documentary “Chilean Mine Rescue” held in U.S. capital What made the successful rescue of 33 miners in northern Chile possible? How were incredibly difficult decisions made when a positive outcome seemed unlikely? How did the miners survive 17 days without any type of contact with the outside world? These are some of the questions that the workshop on management, organized by the Embassy of Chile and the National Museum of Natural History as part of the exhibition, “Against All Odds: Rescue at the Chilean Mine,” tried to answer. The event took place on October 11 – the first anniversary of the rescue at the San José mine- and the large number of participants reflects the great interest in this topic by the U.S. public. More than 500 people filled the museum’s Baird Auditorium. The event was organized and publicized with the support of the Leadership Center of the Wharton School of Business of the University of Pennsylvania and the On Leadership supplement of The Washington Post newspaper, both of which participated as partners on this project. In her speech opening the event, Kathryn Fuller, Chair of the National Museum of Natural His-

tory advisory board, underscored all of the hard work involved in the rescue and praised the ability of the Embassy to organize events that highlighted the positive values inherent in the rescue effort. Ambassador Arturo Fermandois spoke, with great satisfaction, about the Embassy’s ability to coordinate assistance from the United States, during the process which ultimately led to the successful rescue. On behalf of Chile, he thanked everyone concerned. The invited panelists had traveled from Chile to be part of this workshop and included Minister Laurence Golborne, who headed government efforts at the rescue site, and Luis Urzua, leader of the miners. Also present was miner Esteban Rojas, who became famous for proposing to his long time girlfriend, a promise he made during those long days waiting underground. Cultural Attaché Nicolás Bar explained the reason behind remembering events this way, stating, “The rescue of the miners is a prime example of leadership and demonstrates what a country can achieve when it acts with conviction and professionalism. We at

the Embassy proposed that the first anniversary of the rescue should be commemorated in a different way, calling for deep reflection on what took place from the perspective of the people who managed the rescue.” The program also included the premiere of the documentary film “Chilean Mine Rescue,” produced by the cable television channel Smithsonian Networks with the participation of the Embassy. The diplomatic mission provided information and materials, yet its main contribution was organizing interviews with authorities and miners in Chile.

The Washington Post published an article highlighting the event, which was also announced on the television channels NBC and Univision. The second portion of the management program will take place on February 23, 2012. It will focus on the role played by U.S. institutions in the rescue.

Massachusetts: un gran socio para Chile

l primero de diciembre pasado se firmó en Santiago el Acuerdo entre Chile y el estado de Massachusetts. Este no es un convenio de cooperación más. Chile lo buscó con pinzas, lo propuso al socio correcto y esta Embajada puso su energía para negociarlo y suscribirlo en plazo récord. Con la entusiasta respuesta del gobernador Deval Patrick, nació así el segundo acuerdo entre Chile y un estado miembro de la Unión, agregándose al vigente con California.

La ubicación privilegiada de este estado en los rankings mundiales e internos de Estados Unidos es garantía de oportunidades para Chile. Su estructura estatal y semipública ofrece inmensas posibilidades en fondos concursables para emprendedores extranjeros. En esas tierras de Nueva Inglaterra, lugar en que nació la independencia norteamericana y cuna de estadistas como los dos presidentes Adams, Roosevelt y Kennedy, hoy se cultiva sistemáticamente la innovación. Potenciando esta ocasión, Harvard y MIT son parte del acuerdo firmado con Chile, al suscribirse un convenio específico entre aquel prestigiado instituto tecnológico y CONICYT, y refrendarse un ambicioso plan de trabajo con la oficina regional de Harvard para América Latina.

¿Qué hace especial este Acuerdo? Su vocación de conocimiento. Chile necesita potenciar las mentes para alcanzar el desarrollo. Y con este documento, nuestro país se coloca en primera fila para aprovechar una de las fuentes más potentes de conocimiento disponibles en el mundo. En la cooperación que nace, Chile aporta sus profesionales, atractivos programas de innovación y experiencias para beneficio mutuo, el que apuntará a las áreas seleccionadas por el presidente Sebastián Piñera y convenidas con el nuevo socio: educación, energía y biotecnología.

Para Chile, entonces, una asociación con el estado más ilustrado e intelectualmente más galardonado de Estados Unidos apunta al centro de una de las prioridades de nuestra política exterior: el conocimiento. Sin descuidar los intensos y valiosos flujos con muchos otros estados norteamericanos, hoy nuestra relación con Estados Unidos está prioritariamente al servicio de la educación, emprendimiento, ciencia y tecnología, cooperación bilateral y hacia terceros países e innovación. Fue con esto en mente que, con motivo de su visita a Boston en septiembre pasado, el presidente Sebastián Piñera invitó al gobernador Patrick a establecer un plan de trabajo conjunto, el cual debía enfocarse en

las áreas en las que Massachusetts posee mayores fortalezas: educación, energía y biotecnología. La propuesta fue acogida con entusiasmo por la contraparte estadounidense, acordándose dar inicio a las conversaciones destinadas a su concreción. La Embajada en Estados Unidos asumió de inmediato la tarea de llevar dicho acuerdo a la práctica. El embajador Arturo Fermandois y el ministro consejero Roberto Matus negociaron en Boston con los equipos técnicos y políticos del

gobernador, encabezados por el director ejecutivo Kenneth Brown y el viceasesor legal Mark Reilly, acordando un texto de convenio, una fecha para su firma y la visita a Santiago del gobernador Patrick. El gobernador y su delegación estuvieron en Chile los días 1 y 2 de diciembre. La primera autoridad de Massachusetts llegó a la capital chilena, acompañado de un grupo de empresarios y académicos. Al hacerlo señaló “este es un acuerdo que tiene una enorme significación y en el cual tenemos puestas grandes esperanzas”. Presentes en el acto se encontraban el canciller subrogante Fernando Schmidt, el ministro de Educación Felipe Bulnes y el embajador Arturo Fermandois, quien veía así concluir los esfuerzos desplegados al iniciar las conversaciones con Massachusetts. El acuerdo está compuesto por un convenio marco y de planes de traba-

Así, durante la misma ceremonia y como parte de esta nueva alianza se firmó el Acuerdo de Financiamiento de doctorados entre la Comisión Nacional de Investigación Científica y Tecnológica (CONICYT) y el Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Este convenio representa un nuevo puente entre Chile y organizaciones que manejan atractivos presupuestos concursables, de las cuales hay 3 que ya se han definido: Massachusetts Life Sciences Center, organización que cuenta con un mandato de 10 años para invertir en el sector de ciencias para la vida, lo que incluye áreas que van desde la educación,

Los WBC proporcionan asistencia técnica a mujeres en precaria situación económica, ofreciéndoles capacitación y asesoría para ayudarlas a comenzar sus propios negocios. En dicho contexto realizaron una visita guiada al WBC de Washington D.C. (DC Women’s Business Center). Resultó muy interesante también conocer los programas After School, destinados al establecimiento de centros en los que niños en edad escolar cuentan con espacios protegidos para su aprendizaje y crecimiento después de la jornada en el colegio, permitiendo que sus padres puedan cumplir un horario laboral completo. Para conocer de primera mano el trabajo desarrollado en esta área, visitaron la organización After School Alliance y la Office of Out-of-School Time Programs del Distrito de Columbia. Por su parte, en el Sitar Arts Center pudieron verificar la labor de un centro de cuidado de niños, que tiene como particularidad el desarrollo de actividades artísticas, contando con una compleLa segundo secretario de la Embajada de Chile Paola Palma, Soledad Valdés, Tracy Zucherman, del programa de ta infraestructura para impartir clases de teatro, danza, pintura y fotografía. Senadores chilenos sorprendidos por similitudes en la preocupación por la educación en Chile y Estados Unidos Senadores Carlos Kuschel y Fulvio Rossi y el periodista Matías del Río debaten con contrapartes locales acerca de la actualidad chilena republicano en el Subcomité de Relaciones Exteriores para el Hemisferio Occidental, la delegación sostuvo un encuentro con un grupo de especialistas en América Latina del prestigioso centro de estudios Brookings Institution. En dicha instancia, debatieron e intercambiaron puntos de vista sobre diversos temas de la agenda regional y algunos aspectos de la política interna e internacional de Chile y Estados Unidos. En un encuentro moderado por el ministro consejero Roberto Matus, los senadores Carlos Kuschel y Fulvio Rossi y el periodista Matías del Río intercambiaron opiniones sobre sistemas educacionales con especialistas estadounidenses.

Entre el 17 y el 21 de octubre permanecieron en la capital estadounidense, respondiendo a una invitación de la Embajada de Chile, los senadores Carlos Kuschel y Fulvio Rossi y el periodista Matías del Río, quienes, ante distintos foros, analizaron diversos temas de la agenda política e internacional chilena. En una mesa redonda con representantes de empresas norteamericanas y centros de estudio especializados en América Latina, efectuada en el Council of the Americas, expusieron y debatieron sobre los problemas de la integración latinoamericana y las relaciones con Estados Unidos.

También abordaron la actualidad de Chile a nivel interno. Junto a representantes del Departamento de Educación, centros de estudio, universidades y entidades de coordinación universitaria del sector privado, los personeros visitantes participaron en un encuentro sobre educación superior, especialmente organizado por la Embajada. El tópico principal fue el debate educacional en Chile y las soluciones planteadas en Estados Unidos ante problemas similares. La cuestión educacional fue también abordada en el contexto de una recepción ofrecida por la misión diplomática chilena, en la que los invitados intercambiaron ideas con expertos en materia de educación de la Casa Blanca, del Centro de Estudios especializado en educación Educational Sector y con asesores del Congreso. Hubo consenso y hasta algo de sorpresa en los asistentes ante la similitud de los problemas de Chile y Estados Unidos en torno a la calidad de la educación, costo de los aranceles, debate sobre equidad y el nivel de deserción y endeudamiento que afecta a los estudiantes y sus familias. Feria hortofrutícola más grande de Estados Unidos

Pabellón Chileno destaca en la Fresh Summit de Atlanta En paralelo se llevó a efecto encuentro de agregados agrícolas chilenos El viernes 14 de octubre se dio inicio a la feria PMA Fresh Summit, instancia que anualmente congrega a los más variados actores del sector hortofrutícola internacional y que en esta ocasión se desarrolló en el International Convention & Exposition Center de Atlanta, Georgia.

Autoridades económicas chilenas representan a países del Cono Sur en reuniones en Washington D.C. El pasado otoño el centro de Washington D.C. se vio literalmente invadido por miles de economistas provenientes de todos los rincones del mundo y colmado por la presencia de las máximas autoridades financieras y monetarias de las economías más avanzadas del mundo y de los países emergentes. Todos ellos se congregaron en la capital estadounidense para participar en la reunión anual del Fondo

Monetario Internacional y el Banco Mundial. En estas reuniones, los líderes económicos del mundo revisan la situación actual de la economía mundial, los avances en erradicación de la pobreza, la efectividad de las políticas de ayuda a los países más pobres y el desarrollo económico. Este año, la atención estuvo puesta principalmente en las turbulencias de la crisis de la zona euro.

En el marco de estas reuniones que se extendieron desde el 23 al 27 de septiembre, Chile fue representado por el presidente del Banco Central, José de Gregorio, y el ministro de Hacienda, Felipe Larraín, quienes sostuvieron una serie de encuentros con expertos mundiales y otros representantes gubernamentales, destinados a analizar la creciente incertidumbre internacional derivada de la crisis de deuda de la zona euro y su impacto en las economías emergentes, como Chile, así como las posibles medidas para enfrentar esta situación.

Exhibición inaugurada en Washington D.C. con alto interés del público especializado

Nueva etapa pictórica de Mario Toral presentada en Estados Unidos La muestra “Bodies and Spirals” reúne obras de gran formato realizadas durante el año 2011 El año de exhibiciones en la Embajada de Chile en Estados Unidos terminó con la presentación de la obra más reciente de uno de los grandes de la pintura chilena actual. Se trata de Bodies and Spirals, una serie de pinturas al oleo sobre tela, de gran formato, realizadas durante 2011 por el pintor, grabador, ilustrador y escritor chileno Mario Toral. La exhibición –que estará abierta hasta el 13 de enero – fue inaugurada en la sala de arte de la Embajada de Chile en Washington D.C. el 22 de noviembre pasado, ante un numeroso e interesado grupo de invitados. Ante ellos el embajador Fermandois indicó estar “impresionado por el trabajo artísti-

nuestra imaginación hasta el infinito”. Las obras están inspiradas en un viaje que realizó el artista a la India, en donde “poderosas figuras geométricas, presentes en esculturas, imágenes, música y arquitectura, quedaron incrustadas en mis ojos y mi memoria”, señala el mismo Toral. Destaca particularmente la obra “Divertimento”, que constituye una pieza central en la muestra por ser la primera realizada por el pintor en esta etapa de su trabajo artístico, sirviendo de base para la elaboración de las restantes. En ella se aprecian coloridas formas y figuras humanas que parecen flotar sobre el fondo oscuro, en una escena que mezcla elementos lúdicos y dramáticos.

Mario Toral nació en Santiago el año 1934 y se ha dedicado desde la edad más temprana al arte. Estudió en Uruguay y Francia, y ha vivido en Argentina, Brasil, Francia, Estados Unidos y su originario Chile. Ha sido profesor universitario y, además de pintor e ilustrador, escritor de cuentos. Tuvo su primera exposición individual a la edad de 21 años y es el autor del mural más grande de toda América Latina, Memoria Visual de una Nación, obra de 1200 metros cuadrados ubicada en la principal estación de metro de Santiago de Chile. Cabe mencionar que su primera exhibición en Estados Unidos fue justamente en Washington D.C., en la Galería Fendrick el año 1972. Cerca de 70 empresarios, agrupados en la Cámara de Comercio de Fort Lauderdale, concurrieron el 2 de noviembre último a la Residencia de la Embajada de Chile para conocer más acerca del país y sus potencialidades para hacer negocios. La delegación fue encabezada por el miembro de la Cámara de Representantes Allen West, quien representa ese distrito en el Congreso. El embajador Fermandois destacó esta iniciativa de vinculación entre Chile y dicho importante centro comercial, industrial y turístico del estado de La Florida y el congresista West agradeció la acogida brindada por la Embajada, destacando las bondades de Chile para hacer negocios y los beneficios del Acuerdo de Libre Comercio bilateral.

PREMIO AMIGO DE CHILE OTORGADO AL GOBERNADOR DE PENNSYLVANIA En la Union League de Filadelfia se llevó a cabo el 10 de noviembre pasado la entrega del “Friend of Chile Award”. El premio es concedido anualmente desde hace 14 años a aquellos miembros de la comunidad que destacan especialmente en el fortalecimiento de los vínculos comerciales entre Chile y la región de la Gran Filadelfia. La Cámara de Comercio Chileno-Americana de Filadelfia premió este año al gobernador de Pennsylvania Tom Corbett. Segunda reunión de científicos Chilenos en Estados Unidos Para intercambiar ideas sobre el futuro científico del país, investigadores chilenos se congregaron en la sede del MIT La segunda versión de la Reunión de Científicos Chilenos en Estados Unidos, que sigue a la efectuada el año pasado en Washington D.C., se desarrolló en la ciudad de Boston, sede de prestigiosas instituciones académicas de nivel mundial, los días 30 de septiembre y 1 de octubre. Como en la ocasión anterior, el encuentro fue organizado por la Embajada de Chile en Estados Unidos y por la agrupación científica Nexos Chile-USA. El Massachusetts Institute of Technology acogió en su Picower Center a los más de 70 asistentes, entre los que se encontraban los directores de la Comisión Nacional de Ciencia y Tecnología, de la Iniciativa Científica Milenio, de la Fundación Imagen de Chile y de la Asociación Nacional de Estudiantes en Postgrado, quienes viajaron directamente desde Chile. Junto a ellos, el encuentro contó con expositores chilenos de primer nivel provenientes de las universidades de Harvard, California en Los Ángeles, Massachusetts, Maryland, Católica de Chile y Mayor, quienes expusieron ante investigadores , también chilenos, que en diversas etapas de formación se encuentran desarrollando sus actividades en numerosos centros de estudio en Estados Unidos. En palabras del embajador Arturo Fermandois, quien inauguró la actividad, la misma logró plenamente los objetivos planteados al proponer su realización al Ministerio de Relaciones Exteriores de Chile, esto es, “el fortalecimiento de una instancia de diálogo entre los participantes así como de estos con la Embajada, universidades e instituciones oficiales chilenas del área científica y tecnológica, para facilitar e incentivar su reinserción laboral y académica en Chile”. Asimismo, agregó, busca establecer una comunicación más fluida con otros científicos chilenos de alto nivel que desarrollan sus actividades en Estados Unidos. La reunión concluyó con la exposición de paneles por parte de investigadores jóvenes (ver recuadro), destinados a dar conocer los trabajos que los mismos se encuentran desarrollando en los más diversos campos del saber científico.

Programa de actividades organizado por Embajada de Chile y Museo Nacional de Historia Natural

El primer aniversario del rescate de los mineros recordado por sus protagonistas Seminario sobre liderazgo y estreno del documental “Chilean Mine Rescue” en la capital estadounidense ¿Qué hizo posible el exitoso esfuerzo de rescate de los 33 mineros en el norte de Chile? ¿Cómo se enfrentaron las decisiones más difíciles cuando todo parecía adverso? ¿Cómo lograron los mineros resistir 17 días sin contacto de ningún tipo con el exterior? Son algunas de las preguntas que se buscó responder a través del seminario sobre liderazgo organizado por la Embajada de Chile y el Museo Nacional de Historia Natural en el marco de la exhibición “Contra toda adversidad: rescate en la mina chilena”.

of Natural History, destacó la labor realizada durante el rescate y alabó la capacidad de la Embajada para organizar instancias destinadas a resaltar los valores positivos envueltos en el mismo. El embajador Arturo Fermandois, por su parte, recordó con especial satisfacción la labor de coordinación de la ayuda proveniente desde Estados Unidos, efectuada por la misión diplomática durante el proceso que culminó con el exitoso rescate, agradeciendo a nombre de Chile a todas las personas involucradas.

La actividad se llevó a cabo el 11 de octubre –con motivo del primer aniversario del rescate en la mina San José- y el alto número de participantes da cuenta del interés por el tema en la sociedad estadounidense. Más de 500 personas llenaron el auditorio Baird del Museo. En su organización y difusión se contó con el apoyo del Centro de Liderazgo de la Escuela de Negocios Wharton, de la Universidad de Pennsylvania, y el suplemento On Leadership, del periódico The Washington Post, quienes participaron como socios en el proyecto.

Entre los panelistas invitados –que viajaron especialmente desde Chile- estuvieron el ministro Laurence Golborne, quien encabezó los esfuerzos gubernamentales en el sitio del rescate, y el líder de los mineros, Luis Urzúa. Participó también el minero Esteban Rojas, que se hizo conocido por haber contraído matrimonio después del rescate con su pareja de muchos años, promesa que hizo durante los largos días de espera subterránea.

La idea de recordar de esta manera la explica el agregado cultural Nicolás Bär, quien señala que “el rescate minero es una muestra de liderazgo notable, que demuestra lo que un país puede lograr cuando se trabaja

con convicción y profesionalismo. En la Embajada nos propusimos conmemorar el primer aniversario del rescate de una manera distinta, invitando a una reflexión profunda sobre lo ocurrido, desde la perspectiva de las personas que lo lideraron”. El programa incluyó además el estreno del documental Chilean Mine Rescue, desarrollado por el canal de televisión por cable Smithsonian Networks, producido con la participación de la Embajada, que proveyó de información y material, pero que principalmente gestionó entrevistas con autoridades y mineros en Chile.

The Washington Post se hizo eco de este evento publicando un artículo sobre el mismo, tal como lo hicieron las cadenas de televisión NBC y Univisión que difundieron despachos dando cuenta de su realización. El programa de liderazgo contará con una segunda parte, que tendrá lugar el 23 de febrero de 2012, la que estará orientada al papel jugado en el rescate por las institucones estadounidenses.

La campaña de recaudación de fondos para la Teletón 2011 se inició en octubre pasado, con una cena de solidaridad que se desarrolló en el Hotel Sheraton de la ciudad de Filadelfia, organizada por la agrupación “Chile Lindo”. A la misma siguieron diversas iniciativas como “Teletonízate” en Long Beach (NY), un baile de disfraces en Bridgeport (Connecticut), una “Empanadatón” en Beverly (Delaware), un evento musical en Medford (Massachusetts), concluyendo el sábado 26 de noviembre con una “Bailetón” organizada por la agrupación “Amigos por Chile” de Nueva Jersey. En total, durante el año 2011 se recaudaron 50.060 dólares, de los cuales 31 mil corresponden a dinero efectivo y 19.060 a equipos médicos para la rehabilitación de los niños atendidos por los diversos centros Teletón. La Fundación Teletón Chile USA, entidad sin fines de lucro, continúa desarrollando un ambicioso plan de trabajo que también incluye obras benéficas locales pero cuyo principal objetivo es contribuir de manera decidida y constante a la obra de la Fundación Teletón en Chile.
