INSIDE TEMPLE Adding Meaning and Purpose By Rabbi Joseph R. Black • black@EmanuelDenver.org • ext. 308

A

s I write this article, winter still has its grip on Colorado. While this has been an exceptional year for skiing, the uncertainty of freezing temperatures, snow storms, quick thaws and more snow is beginning to take its toll. And yet, I know by the time you read this article, spring will have finally arrived. That can only mean one thing: it’s time to get ready for Passover. Now is the time that Jews get rid of all the chametz (leavening) from our homes. The question of what defines chametz is not as simple as one might first assume. According to tradition, chametz is not only bread, cakes and crackers. Anything with yeast and five types of grain is considered to be leavened. But it doesn’t stop there. There are multiple categories of chametz:

from legumes to any grain that comes in contact with water. This year, maybe we should think about the concept of chametz from another perspective. Since the mitzvah of ridding our house of leavening involves removing excess food that is not appropriate for the holiday, why stop with food? Why not look at all aspects of our lives that are superfluous and excessive? How much money are we spending on stuff that clutters our cabinets and closets? What about items and services that have become part of our everyday routine but really are not that important? We ask ourselves: at what point do luxuries turn into conveniences and then into necessities? And while we are ridding ourselves of our physical and spiritual chametz, this is also a perfect time to look at ways that we can add meaning and purpose to our lives. Your clergy and staff are

always looking for ways to improve our congregation. One of our main goals at Temple Emanuel is creating a spiritual community where we share our lives with others. We study, pray, celebrate simchas and console one another in times of sorrow. We need to stay in touch with what is going on in our congregation. For this reason, we have decided to add a new column in our eNotes that shares important events within our community. If there is something that you want to share with us, please do. We want to keep our community connected. Susie Sigman’s article on page 5 details how to do this. May this Pesach time of rebirth and renewal help us to rethink our priorities and find new ways of strengthening ourselves, our families and our community. May you all have a kosher and fulfilling Passover.

At the same time, we need to make a strong call keynote speech at last year’s URJ showing a willingness to take for Audacious Hospitality to our families with young Biennial. Rabbi Jacobs challenged surprisingly bold risks children, our youth and our young adults in the each of us to not only welcome HOSPITALITY (n.) – the hope that they will remain engaged and connected people of all ages and backgrounds friendly and generous reception throughout their Jewish journey. into our synagogues, but to make them feel and entertainment of guests, Audacious Hospitality will be unique for each comfortable, connected and appreciated. “Audacious visitors or strangers of us. INSIDE TEMPLE A New Chapter By Janet Bronitsky • bronitsky@EmanuelDenver.org • ext. 303

I

n keeping with the request of the Board of Trustees for an 18-month lead time and planning for my personal future, I have decided to retire from my position, effective June 30, 2015. I look forward to continuing to work over the next year plus. Temple Emanuel is a wonderful place to be a part of and I look forward to being an active member of the community following my retirement. Speaking of staff changes, I express my sincere thanks to Cindy Wolfe and her dedicated efforts on behalf of our ECC upon her retirement. Under her tutelage we have made great strides in retaining the cutting edge ECC program we have come to expect from Temple Emanuel. Her final day at the ECC will be late May. We had the opportunity to honor her in absentia at the Annual Meeting and there will be more recognition with the close of school. I am grateful to have had the opportunity to work with her, be a colleague, and celebrate our life riches as we have both become grandparents of eight little ones. May this life change be the start of a new beginning for her and her husband, Mike. Our Fiscal Year Ends June 30! We are closing in on the end of the current fiscal year. All dues balances should be paid by Monday, June 30. If it is not possible for you to have the balance paid, please let me know and I will make the necessary adjustment to Temple’s records. I know many are still facing financial difficulties. Dues comprise almost 80% of the Temple’s operating budget so each member’s contribution matters. Communication with me is vital so Temple’s finances can be accurately maintained. Thank you for your support: it sustains our community.

Recognizing Simchas and Losses By Susie Sigman • sigman@EmanuelDenver.org • ext. 325

n Rabbi Black’s article he talked about how we are striving to be a more connected community. Starting soon in the eNotes, our weekly email with news of what is coming up at Temple and in the community, we will add a section where you can click through to find out what is going on in our members’ families: their simchas (celebrations) as well as losses. If you or someone in your family has celebrated a major milestone like a special anniversary or birthday, received an award or honor, had a baby or grandchild or the like; or if you have suffered the loss of a family member, please let us know. Email or call me. If you are not already receiving our eNotes, or if you have a new email address, please let me know. You will receive the most current information and connect to your Temple community on an ongoing basis this way.

What an amazing weekend with Josh Nelson! Temple really celebrated being Jewish with a Warehouse Shabbat for young professionals, the fundraising concert and a very special concert for Religious School families. Thanks to everyone who supported this weekend. We raised over $130,000 for Temple programs.

On Philanthropy By Francie Miran • miran@EmanuelDenver.org • ext. 335 A fascinating new study, Connected to Give: Synagogues and Movements, is making waves with some interesting facts, which may not surprise you: Most American Jews are charitable givers and engagement with Jewish community is a paramount driver of Jewish charitable giving. It also provides interesting information about Jews and legacy giving, which demonstrates that this could be key to the future of Jewish organizations. 23% of American Jews have provided for charities in their wills, nearly twice as many as people who don’t follow that faith. The Talmud itself makes the case statement for why donors may wish to leave Temple a legacy gift. “I did not find the world desolate when I entered it, and as my ancestors planted for me, so I plant for my children.” The sacred bond linking generation to generation is strengthened through bequests that represent investments in the future of Temple Emanuel. Temple Emanuel has partnered with Rose Community Foundation in their “Live On” initiative for a number of years to build permanent endowments through bequests and planned gifts. Temple is proud that our Live On Society, families who have included Temple in their estate plans, has 96 members. Since 2006 we have received gifts from 35 families totaling over $618,000. Making a legacy gift is a clear statement about the values and beliefs that have shaped your life, as well as the vision of Temple for future generations. We invite you to join our Live On Society by including Temple in your estate plans via simple bequests in a will or trust, life insurance policy or a retirement or pension plan. Rose is now providing incentive dollars for new legacy gifts, making this a perfect time to act. Information is available at http://EmanuelDenver.org/live-on or contact me at miran@EmanuelDenver.org or 303.388.4013 ext. 335. Have you already remembered Temple in your will? Please let me know so that I have the opportunity to acknowledge you. www.EmanuelDenver.org

Am Yisrael Chai – Israel and World Jewish Communities Anat Hoffman: Celebrating Freedom in Israel

Thank you to everyone who helped to make Fighting to Pray: A Weekend with Anat Hoffman a huge success. We celebrated with Anat on Friday night with a joyous Shabbat service, learned with Anat on Saturday morning with an engaging Torah Study and broadened our perspective on Sunday morning with a captivating Israel program. This exciting program would not have been possible without the Marjorie Hornbein Adult Education Fund and the generous support of the Sisterhood. After this inspirational weekend, the question is – What’s next? How can we all become part of the wave of change initiated by Israel Religious Action Center and the Women of the Wall? You can: • Sign up for “The Pluralist” – the weekly newsletter from the Israel Religious Action Center. • Purchase a Women of the Wall Tallit – show your financial support for this important cause and receive a beautiful symbol of equality in return. • Donate to the Israel Religious Action Center. The Israel Religious Action Center also encourages you to: • Read - At least once a week read something about Israel that is not about security. • Use your financial support to create an Israel that reflects your values. • Visit Israel, and make your visits count. Make time for the Israel Religious Action Center. (Less Roman ruins and more freedom rides.) • Refuse. Refuse to choose between your liberal values and your commitment to Israel. Let your frustration motivate you to action. Action is our middle name. Together, we can make our voices heard to support Israel – our homeland. Healing, Empowering, Serving at Emanuel Denver

Our HESED Committee has completed its fall listening campaign. We heard from many people that the thoughts and threats of persistent violence, both in schools and other public areas, are keeping our Temple community awake at night. Our next step will be engaging with leaders in our community and organizations to learn how we can make a sustainable difference in reducing violence. If this is an issue about which you feel passionate, we invite you to join us as we embark on the research and eventually to an action. Contact Rabbi Immerman at immerman@EmanuelDenver.org to join the HESED team.

R E L I G I O U S E D U C AT I O N Passover Memories By Ron Leff • leff@EmanuelDenver.org • ext. 327

M

y preparations for Passover have changed considerably since becoming a parent. I used to worry about preparing my home, cleaning out the chametz (leavened products) and purchasing the Kosher for Passover foods. I’d decide whether or not to make the trip back to Michigan for the sedarim or stay here. Now, as a parent, my focus is on making Passover memories. When I think back to my childhood there are so many different memories I have connected to the celebration of Passover. I remember being at my grandparents’ house with aunts, uncles and cousins. I remember asking the Four Questions (yeah, I was always the youngest). I remember stealing and hiding the afikomen. I remember my Grandpa Harry, of blessed memory, lead the seder, of course, the amazing food Grandma Sonia, of blessed memory, served. I searched the house for gym shoes, because that was always what my grandparents gave us as the afikomen gift. Now it’s my responsibility to make Passover memories for my children. I hope that I can help you create memories for yours. Please take a look at Jewish Family page of the Temple website – www.EmanuelDenver.org/learning/jewishhome. I have shared many different resources that I hope will help you in the task of making memories. If I can be of assistance, please be sure to contact me. Final Days of Religious / Hebrew School The final session of Religious School and Sunday Hebrew classes will be held on Sunday, May 4. The final session of Wednesday Hebrew classes will be held on Wednesday, May 7.

E A R LY C H I L D H O O D C E N T E R The School Year Draws to a Close By Cindy Wolfe • wolfe@EmanuelDenver.org • ext. 319

A

s the school year draws to a close, it is with much excitement and, of course, a tinge of sadness that I retire in my position as Director of Temple Emanuel ECC. I have worked here for almost 12 years: the first 4 years as the Assistant Director and the last 7 1/2 years as the ECC Director. I have grown both intellectually and emotionally. Not only have I learned a lot about early childhood education through advancing my own professional development, I have learned how to be a leader, a mentor and a friend. Over the last 12 years, there have been tragedies as well as triumphs. Unfortunately, a few teachers, parents and friends have passed away during my tenure, but at the same time, so many beautiful babies in the ECC have been born. I will always cherish the special relationships I have established with my fellow teachers

and staff. They are the most dedicated, loving and nurturing people you will ever find. I will always keep with me the relationships I’ve built with each family. I am unspeakably grateful to have had the opportunity to be surrounded by so many beautiful, precious and loving children every single day. I will never forget their smiling faces which have brought me so much joy and happiness. I am excited for the next chapter of my life, in whatever career path I choose. I look forward to spending more time with my children and grandchildren. I can’t wait to travel with my husband, Mike to Israel to visit our daughter and son-in-law who will be making aliyah this summer. As always, we look forward to spending more time with our two grown sons and their families, all of whom live back east. We have 8 grandchildren and hope to visit them often! As I say goodbye, I’d like to offer a wish and a blessing: that this wonderful

community will continue to thrive, and that the children here at the Temple ECC will learn, grow and realize their full potential. Let us all go m’chayil el chayil, from strength to strength, and find success in everything we strive for. I hope everyone has a wonderful summer.

We will also be honoring Lois Rich, who after 30 years as our Flower Fund Chairwoman, is retiring. There are no words to express our great appreciation. Thank you to all the bakers who helped with the Purim Bake Sale. We cannot do it without you and are so grateful. A special thank you goes to Cathy Scott who organized this great fundraising event.
