How Giving Back

Pays You Back I

n the quest for success, it’s easy to focus on money, mansions, and Maseratis. Income, expenses, and bottom line can be even more of an obsession when you own a business.

Welcome to success in the 21st century.

So how does giving result in getting? First, by elevating your company culture. People who give are happier, more loyal, and more enthusiastic about their jobs. If you own a company, that translates into higher productivity and lower turnover. Next, your reputation improves. The people around you admire your work, and your company benefits from better PR and a stronger network of community connections. Last, your value and that of your brand grows, improving customer loyalty and increasing sales.

It’s now a proven fact that companies with the most robust philanthropic and social responsibility programs reap huge financial returns.1 Your name doesn’t have to be Oprah2 or Bank of America3 either. Individual employees, corporate ladder climbers, even very small businesses are all learning that giving back is the smartest way to profit, both financially and personally.4

This trend is not to be dismissed. Whether you’re an employee or a proprietor, giving back may be the smartest way you can streamline your operation and reach your loftiest goals. Just ask any of the four entrepreneurs we recently contacted: Leena Patidar, Marques Ogden, Sucheta Rawal, and Dr. Alison Thompson.

With rising income disparity and seemingly fewer opportunities, people tend to reevaluate their priorities. Sure, everyone still wants to make money. But in a post9/11, post-2008 world, humans are demanding more meaning out of life than just a decent paycheck. Reading to the elderly, building a house for a family, helping finance a school - all of these charitable acts feed the souls of both the giver and the receiver.

Each of these trailblazers has blended righteousness and giving with their financial and career aspirations. Each has found a way to fulfill their humanitarian and spiritual selves by helping others, all while attaining their own personal success.

But what if giving, rather than earning, was the most powerful way to achieve your dreams? What if the secret formula for wealth and happiness lay in donating your precious time, talent, and yes - even your money?

Each is doing well - by doing good.

Revolutionizing the Way Non-Profits Receive Contributions https://www.coinupapp.com/ Leena Patidar is a money person with a very big heart. Decorated with degrees from Loyola, Harvard, and MIT, she started her career by wowing Citigroup and Ernst & Young with her efficiency savvy. She continued her path of success by consulting for venture capitalists and co-founding several successful enterprises, ranging from teleradiology to eye health services to investment firms. Patidar could easily have continued her lucrative career in finance. But on the way, she discovered within herself a desire to help the less fortunate. Combining social responsibility with her formidable knowledge and experience, she founded CoinUp. This revolutionary mobile donation app is changing how charities raise funds by letting users donate their “spare change” to causes by rounding up their regular daily credit card purchases. Today, the self-named “Mompreneur” finds fulfillment raising her kids and as board member and advisor to several nonprofit organizations and women-owned businesses. “With all the business experience I've gained, I’ve been able to take the best aspects of traditional business models and bring them into the non-profit world. The non-profit world is amazing. You have so many passionate people who are so inspiring and who want to do so much good. Non-profit is a $373 billion industry now. But again, there's so much inefficiency. They have good people, but they don't always have the right resources, whether it's funding, technology, or the number of people they have working with them. It's just really hard to meet all of their goals with minimal resources. 8

July  - August 2018  |  Exceptional People Magazine

We decided to create a tool that nonprofits could use. It’s our CoinUp app. We wondered, with the economy going digital, what's happening to all of that physical spare change that used to be collected in cash registers? When you add that change up, it can create a huge impact. We looked at the numbers and the possibilities, and we started realizing that non-profits are always strapped for resources. They also need reporting and marketing tools. They need people to help them in all these areas. So we ended up creating a platform in which we provide marketing tools for Coin Up and the non-profit to come together. We provide reporting tools so that they can get a monthly report that shows all their donors and how much they've donated. This makes it easy for them to provide a tax donation receipt based on that reporting at the end of the year. I just want to leave behind good, strong relationships. Authentic relationships. I'm building this company on that idea." 

Giving Back to Boys & Girls Clubs of America, YMCA, Youth Football Camps, and Veterans https://www.marquesogden.com/ Former NFL offensive lineman Marques Ogden has experienced some of life’s highest peaks as well as its lowest trenches. Like many of the industry’s veteran players, Ogden’s post football career succeeded for a short time before it quickly failed, leaving him in bankruptcy and almost overwhelming depression. Ultimately, however, his inner perseverance triumphed, having been cultivated early on by an inspirational single father. With a little help from the NFL Trust, Ogden was able to climb out of the depths and restart his life. He wrote Sleepless Nights - The NFL: A Business and Family, in which he lays out the Five Essential Business Keys he learned while running - and losing - his million-dollar construction company. Today the Howard University alum is happily married with two children. A natural motivator, he speaks at universities, community organizations, and Fortune 500 companies such as JPMorgan Chase. Ogden is clearly committed to helping others by sharing his story so that his listeners can avoid the mistakes he made. "When you help others for no personal gain, you reap life's greatest rewards. By giving back to nonprofits, veteran communities, the elderly, and youth, you truly become wealthy and rich. As you do it, others see it and want you to work with them. It's all about consistency, perseverance, and determination. When you attempt to help others for no personal gain, you reap life's greatest rewards. Giving your time to the community is often more valuable than giving money. When you give your time, people are more likely to respect you because it shows that you are vested in their program.

Transforming Vacationers as They Give Back to Local Communities http://www.goeatgive.com When imagining the perfect vacation, you might see yourself on a beach, stretched out on a lounge chair, sipping a frozen margarita. Or maybe you prefer to take in the sights, visit a museum, and dine at a five-star restaurant. Then again, you might be more of an explorer who likes to hike the landscape and camp in the woods. Whatever your style, Sucheta Rawal thinks your vacation should be relaxing, memorable, and rejuvenating. The problem, she says, is that many typical vacations tend to create a kind of tourist “bubble,” insulating travelers from the local culture, authentic foods, and people of the region. As the founder of GoEatGive.com, Rawal is changing all that. But she’s doing more than raising cultural awareness. The award-winning food and travel writer is getting vacationers to give back to the communities they visit, and she says they’re transformed by these meaningful experiences. “While traveling by myself, I found that volunteering was a great way to meet local people. Instead of staying at a hotel and going to tourist attractions, I could actually do something meaningful in a local school, orphanage, or women's empowerment program. Volunteering allows me to talk more meaningfully with the locals. When I travel, the first thing I look for is where to eat. I go to local farmer's markets to see what people buy

and what ingredients they use. Volunteering is a great way to meet people, give back to the community, and learn about the social causes in that area. It took me about three years to turn my passion into a business that was meeting a need and serving an audience. It was a slow transition. I want people to understand that volunteer tourism isn’t a mission trip, and volunteering is not all you do for two weeks. Rather, you get a wonderful vacation while learning about the culture and giving part of your time to the community. You get to stay in a nice hotel, see the sights, and have wonderful meals, but instead of always dining at tourist restaurants, you may go to local people's homes to see how they eat a meal and how the food differs from food at restaurants. Instead of covering all the tourist attractions on a bus tour, you may go deeper into one attraction. You get to see a more authentic side of a country; a side that traditional tourists never see. I've traveled to almost 70 countries. What I've realized is that everybody - whatever their color, religion, or political belief - has very similar underlying qualities. No matter where I go, people have the same desires for their lives. All you need to do is tap into their human side, and try to understand their perspectives and their cultural beliefs. You’ll find that deep down everybody is the same.” 

Love, Light, Life—Bringing Light to People in Need http://www.thirdwavevolunteers.com Alison Thompson has lived five lifetimes. She has filled the roles of math teacher, nurse, investment banker, film director and author. But the job that's nearest and dearest to her heart is working as a full time volunteer humanitarian. NYC’s September 11, 2001 disaster catapulted Thompson into the volunteer rescue world, and she’s never looked back. Since the towers fell, Thompson has been volunteering in some of the most dangerous and forsaken corners of the earth. She goes on a moment’s notice, driven by a desire to help victims of disaster. She brings clothes, her nursing skills, and her unwavering belief that no matter what or who, “we need to love each other.” But Thompson does more than simply help individuals in need: She creates workable, long-term solutions to prevent the same tragedies from happening again. Thompson believes that anyone can volunteer, and that no experience or special knowledge is required to make a positive difference. “A lot of our volunteers have gone on to start their own organizations, run orphanages, and all sorts of things. It's been spiraling. It's a volunteer revolution. The thing is, other people can do what I'm doing. I surround myself with experts. Life is short and you can go any moment. You need to feel every minute by living in the present. You have to be present where you are right now. We need to love each other. There's not enough love left in the world. Endurance Endurance. A test of faith. A test of strength.

As you travel through this journey called life, your trials will be many. When the hills you climb get steeper, Hold on to your faith, your strength; and your passion to continue will grow deeper. Sometimes life is like a door; As you open it, There often are hidden obstacles on the other side that keep you from your vision. Endurance is what you must have. The obstacles become a test of your strength. Don't let the adversities of life keep you out. Endure. For they're not everlasting. Life sometimes is like a race. Some will pass you by, others will fall behind you. It is those who maintain a steady pace, who will Endure to the end. Endurance is what you must have. Those who sprint through the race of life, may feel their faith and strength begin to weaken. And those who fall behind, may quickly lose sight of their vision to reach the end. While those who maintain a steady pace, are those who Endure.

POWER OF

giving THE

By Pat Markel

M

any household budgets are strained, making giving to those less fortunate more challenging than ever. Everyone is working with reduced resources and most of us feel as though we don't have enough to enjoy our own lives. The idea of giving may seem unreasonable. But maybe now, more than ever, is the best time to give because there is a power in giving.

It's not necessary to look far from home to find people who are truly in need. It’s right in your own backyard. The United States has many homeless people. There are many people not receiving proper nutrition and health care. There are children that aren't getting the attention they need to flourish. Giving to others has many personal benefits:

Most of us have already been blessed with so much. Our parents, teachers, relatives, friends, and others have given us a lot. But many others are not as fortunate.

Health

Love

Peace

Consider this: •  25% of the world's population is starving. •  15% of the world's population cannot read or write. •  25 children die every minute from a preventable disease. •  1.5 billion people don't have access to clean water.

Happiness

A feeling of pride

Opportunity to establish new relationships

T he realization that you have much more than you think

EMPOWER YOURSELF

One of the more profound benefits to the giver is the reduction in fear. With everything going on in the world, many people live in fear of economic collapse, natural disasters, crime, paying their bills, caring for their children and their parents, and numerous other things. This is a function of real events and the overly sensationalistic coverage by the media.

A person that can't move beyond the more superficial aspects of life can never do anything spectacular, because he or she will never be exposed to anything that will generate that kind of prerequisite passion.

What's insidious is the effect it has on many people. People become more isolated and less connected with society and their community. Many don't even know their neighbors. By giving your time, you open yourself up to others and your community.

It's in our nature to give, even if we've forgotten. Witness most children: sure, some of them are all about "me, me, and me" but most kids are really quite giving and share readily. They want to take their friends everywhere with them. They want to take care of their dolls.

Giving Helps You Reach Your Full Potential Mahatma Gandhi said, "To find yourself, lose yourself in the service of others." Reaching your full potential is much more likely when you give. No one can fully realize what they're capable of without being passionate about their day-to-day activities.

It's in Our Nature to Give

However, somewhere along the way, have you developed the belief that you must keep what you've gotten for yourself? If so, you're punishing yourself. You're giving in to a scarcity mindset which, in itself, will limit your personal success. So make a plan to give what you have. You may have time, money, or both to share with those less fortunate, but give something and witness the impact it has on your life. You'll be pleasantly surprised in the power of giving and the benefits it brings into your life. 

5 Key

Pillars

to a 6-Figure Business By Annemarie Cross

Can’t breakthrough to a 6-figure business? The thought of being your own boss and running your own business is an exciting prospect, wouldn’t you agree? After all, that’s why you’re operating your own coaching, consulting or training business to share your talents and help people achieve their goals. Can you still remember the day you hung out your shingle, launched your website and announced to the world through your social media channels that you were officially open for business?

do, it’s not really at a level that is paying you what you’re worth. You didn’t realize it was going to be so difficult (and exhausting) to get new clients. So, you increase your marketing efforts, attend even more networking events, and stay up to the wee hours of the morning tweeting, blogging, commenting on other people’s blogs. You share other people’s information, and anything else you can think of to build awareness. Can you relate?

You continued to market your business, attend online and offline networking events, share helpful resources and even reach out to help people, with the goal of raising your profile and awareness of your services.

Many service-based businesses can. So they increase their marketing, networking and social media efforts, which unfortunately will NOT make any difference UNLESS they have 5 key pillars in place.

Yet regrettably that excitement turned to frustration and confusion. Because despite everything you’ve done (and continue to do) the number of people who are interested in your services is not what you’d hoped for. And, they’re certainly not investing in your services. And when they

Without these 5 key pillars the hours spent on marketing and networking won’t have the impact they’re hoping for therefore making it very difficult to get more clients, get paid what they’re worth and build a 6-figure (or more) business. Exceptional People Magazine  |  July - August 2018

Are these pillars missing in your business? 6-Figure Business Pillar 1

Here’s an example:

Your Ideal Client (Niche) For Rapid Business Growth

Imagine you’re a Job Search Coach and I’m currently looking for someone to help me get a new job.

While your products/services may be able to help ‘everyone’ – if you’re trying to market your services to ‘everyone’, you’re really speaking to no-one. Why? Because trying to be all things to all people means that you’re not speaking directly to the needs of your ideal client. Therefore, you’re unable to seize their attention and show them that YOU have the solution to their issues.

24

July  -  August 2018  |  Exceptional People Magazine

When reading your website, the information you provide is not really convincing me that you understand what I’m going through. Nor do you position your services in such a way that I feel compelled to invest in (or even make contact with) you. So I’m off searching for another Job Search Coach who can help me.

EMPOWER YOURSELF

Let’s see what happens if you were to niche your services and specifically target my needs. I’m a Senior Sales Executive that sells high-end IT solutions to the financial market. However due to a decline in profits my company is looking at downsizing. With a family to support and mortgage to pay, to say that I’m slightly apprehensive and anxious about my job prospects, would be an understatement. Yet, you specialize in this area and you’ve helped hundreds if clients like me transition quickly into senior level roles with your services. And, when reading the information on your website, on Twitter, LinkedIn and through your Facebook business page, I get to know and trust you, and can see that you are someone that has the solution and necessary support that will help me achieve my goal. So I call you, and the rest is history… By niching and getting to know your ideal client so well that the next time your ideal client visits your website (or reads one of your articles or posts/Tweets) your message will speak directly to the struggles they’re facing. You show them you know exactly what they’re going through; AND more importantly you spark their interest and create a sense of hope and possibility so much so that they feel compelled to get in contact with you to learn more about you. y coach’s tip: Identify your niche and ensure all of M your marketing material speaks to and reaches that market. You’ll soon position yourself as an expert in that niche market!

6-Figure Business Pillar 2 Your Powerful Signature Brand to Outshine Your Competition Many people mistakenly believe their brand is their business cards, their website, and letterheads etc. While these are important they’re really ‘branding elements’ or what I like to call your ‘brand touch points’.

Your ‘brand’ is your reputation. It’s the perception others have of you. It’s what they think of when your name is mentioned. More importantly, by building a strong Signature Brand YOU are the person who’s mentioned (and not your competitors) when someone is looking for a professional in your field. If you’re unclear about what makes you unique, your brand voice, what separates you from your competitors, and why someone should invest in you, then you’re going to find it very difficult to position yourself as an authority in a crowded market. My coach’s tip: Get clear on these elements and make sure you continue to portray these in all of your branding and communications.

6-Figure Business Pillar 3 Your Signature System to Gain Expert Status AND be Paid What You’re Worth Are you still charging by the hour? There are only so many hours in the day and charging by the hour will restrict the amount of income you make. Also, you may find yourself in a pricing war trying to justify your hourly rate when a prospect compares your rate with one of your competitors. Remember, you DON”T get paid for the hour. You get paid for the VALUE you bring to the hour and for the results your client will achieve through investing with you. Offering clients to pay you by the hour tends to devalue the benefits and results you offer as well as making it very difficult for you to distinguish yourself from all the other coaches and consultants offering similar services. Therefore it’s important to create your Signature System and various programs and packages that incorporate your system, which you can then position strategically (and influentially) to your prospect. My coach’s tip: Develop your unique Signature System by defining the steps you take your client through, and then creating various packages and programs that involve more than just your time so that you can quickly gain expert status and get paid what you’re worth.

Your Irresistible Free Offer To Grow Your List

Your Memorable Personal Marketing Statement to Spark Attention

Have you heard the saying: “The money is in your list?” Your irresistible free offer plays a key role in your listbuilding strategy. While this is a well-known expression, I’m surprised at how many coaches and consultants aren’t pro-actively building their lists. Are you sending out regular messages to encourage people to access your irresistible offer so that your list is growing on a daily basis? If not, you’ll need to get this key pillar in place immediately. Remember, it can take 7 to 9 individual communications from you before someone decides to invest. And in a tight and difficult economy it can take double that amount of time. Adding people to your list on a daily basis will give you the opportunity to send updates and helpful information as part of your keep-in-touch strategy so that YOU are the person they think of when they’re ready to invest. y coach’s tip: If you’re struggling to grow your M list, create a free offer (such as an e-report, a video or audio series etc) and make sure it’s relevant and of value to your ideal client and continue to encourage people on a daily basis to sign up for your irresistible free offer.

If I were to read your Twitter or Facebook bio – would I feel compelled to follow you? Or if we were introduced at a networking event, would your introduction inspire me to find out more about you? Or do you sound like the dozens of other professionals in your area, some of whom are attending the same event and using an introduction that sounds very similar to yours? Unfortunately for many coaches and consultants, it’s often the latter. Your personal marketing statement should include elements of your Signature Brand, Your Signature System and the benefits/value you offer your clients so that people feel compelled to get to know more about you and the services you offer. When done correctly you’ll definitely give yourself the edge you need to distinguish your service from all of the other coaches and consultants working in your area of specialty. My coach’s tip: If you’re still stating your job title, or you’re not generating interest with your introduction then go back to the drawing board and make sure it’s memorable or compelling and relevant to your ideal clients’ needs and desires. These 5 key pillars are a must if your goal is to make this year the year you make your mark in the industry, become recognized as the ‘go to’ person in your field, while creating a 6-Figure (or more) business. 

When Selling, Lose the Fear and Make the Sale By Andrew Horton

W

hen sales professionals avoid any situation where they have the potential to fail or make mistakes, they are limiting themselves and are in fact positioning themselves to fail. The fear of failure or rejection holds far too many sales professionals hostage. They have the ability and the perfect product or service, to help them create long term sustainable, mutually beneficial sales relationships with their prospects and clients, yet they remain trapped in mediocrity, because of their irrational fear. The only way to break through the self-imposed glass ceiling of your sales potential and move to the next level of sales success is to see your comfort zone as an expanding bubble of possibility. Make a conscious effort every day to test the limits of your comfort zone. See how far you can step outside it by making strides to do things every day which will gradually push you outside your comfort zone and test your resolve.

As you gradually test the limits of your comfort zone by approaching prospects in a different part of town or in a different and unusual industry, you are expanding your comfort zone by gradually transforming what was once very uncomfortable, into something familiar. This simple process of gradually expanding your comfort zone opens the floodgates of possibility and will bring many new opportunities which were previously hidden from you into clear sight. Picking Your New Targets When the sales professional finally wants to break out of their current comfort zone and expand their sales world to include all these new possibilities, where do they start? These prospects do not exist for them and are not even on the radar, so how do they identify and find them? As is often the case when faced with new difficult or challenging ideas or concepts, it is best to go back to basics. Exceptional People Magazine  |  July - August 2018

EMPOWER YOURSELF

Ask the following questions about your product or service:

What problems, challenges or needs does my product or service provide effective solutions for?

Are there any new markets you have not explored, which have similar needs or challenges? Is there any other innovative ways my product or service can be used to satisfy other needs in my existing or prospective clients businesses? Has my current market changed due to new innovations or for any other reason and how can my product or service satisfy this new need?

What type of organizations will benefit from my product or service and where can I find them?

When conducting this exercise, stay focused on the problem your product solves or concentrate on the underlying benefit your clients and prospective clients will enjoy, as a result of building a long term sustainable sales relationship with you and your product or service.

Focus on the Needs of Your Clients

This process of discovering new innovative ways to sell your products and services is achieved by looking for problems your product or service can eliminate from people’s lives. Then search and discover industries, markets, businesses and individuals with these challenges and work to gradually build mutually beneficial long term sales relationships with them.

New opportunities which were hidden before will almost magically open up to you. Look around your world with an open mind and know with absolute clarity what your product and service can do. Program your mind to constantly search for new possibilities, especially in unfamiliar and uncomfortable places and your sales universe will expand every day. 

egotiating with someone of authority can be tenacious. The negotiation can become more volatile when you also have a position of authority. How then,

can you negotiate successfully when negotiating with a person that possesses authority? Below are three strategies you can employ when you find yourself in such situations.

K now the source from which the person with whom you’re negotiating derives her authority. In so doing you’ll gain insight into how she uses her authority (i.e. If the person is a judge, she may be of the mindset that people follow her commands without question. If you’re negotiating with a person of that ilk, be prepared to take them out of their mental realm of thinking that you’ll blindly follow their every command. It would also behoove you to set the boundaries, whereby she respects your authority before the negotiation commences.)

Set the stage. Inform the other negotiator, through your body language or verbal communications, that you will not be following his lead, just because he holds a position of authority outside of the current negotiation setting. Be very diplomatic in the way you communicate your intentions. In setting the stage, you don’t want to create planks upon which problems may lie.

Always be cognizant of the fact that authority is transparent. It only exists to the degree you wish to acknowledge it. Thus, you set the limits by the degree you give authority importance in the negotiation. Set the limits appropriately in order to balance the level of attribution required to give it validity, as viewed by the person with whom you’re negotiating. Be cautious not to allow your setting of their authority to eclipse your position.

When dealing with people, always remember authority is positional. Someone that has authority in one environment does not have to have that authority transferred into an environment in which he has no expertise. Authority is also perceptional. Perception becomes reality and thus, people only have as much or as little authority as you give them. When negotiating with people of authority, determine ahead of time how much of their authority you’ll allow to come into the negotiation. In essence, while being respectful of their authority, set boundaries by which you’ll control the level of influence you allow their authority to have. By doing so, you’ll be better equipped to control the interactions that occur in the negotiation. You’ll gain more respect for your position of authority. You’ll also be able to ‘flow’ the negotiation towards a more successful outcome, in a shorter period of time … and everything will be right with the world.  30

The Negotiation Tips Are … •  When negotiating, remember authority is positional. It only has the ‘power’ you give it in your current negotiation situation. •  As you negotiate, you don’t have to transfer someone’s authority from one realm of their life to the environment in which you’re negotiating. If it’s not appropriate to recognize the authority of the other negotiator, don’t recognize it. •  One strategy you might employ when negotiating is to make the other negotiator work to have you recognize his authority. If done so strategically, you can gain a mental chit to negotiate with during the negotiation.

You’ll be happier if you follow your dreams. Start by making just one change. 11   How do I feel when I put all my effort into accomplishing one of my goals? Notice these feelings. You’ll no doubt want to experience them more often. 12   How do I feel whenever I achieve a life goal? Awesome, probably. 13   What’s missing from my life? Answering this question requires considerable soul-searching.

5   What do I talk about doing but never do it? In a conversation, you might state something like, “For the last 10 years, I’ve really wanted to take a cruise to the Caribbean.”

14   Who are my biggest supporters? It’s wise to know the people that will stand behind you and help you pursue your passions, no matter what.

6   What are the reasons I don’t go after my dreams? Explore within yourself why you haven’t pursued the life you want. Can you do something differently to help bring your dreams to life?

15   Who gets in the way of me achieving my goals? In order to find your true passions, you might be required to disengage from those who wish to counteract your efforts.

7   How will I finish the sentence, “More than anything, before I die, I want to ?” Say it out loud and fill in the blank. Then, figure out a way to accomplish your wish.

If you take the time to thoroughly ponder each of these questions, you’ll be pleased with what you discover. Your true passions are inside you, just waiting to be let loose to bring you excitement, joy, and fulfillment. 

7 Steps

for Creating the Life YOU Want By Jack Canfield

EMPOWER YOURSELF

W

e all aspire to do, be and have great things. Yet most of us simply aren't creating the results we want. We complain that we don't have enough money, romance, success or joy in our lives. We point fingers and blame outside problems that "happen" to us and make life more difficult. But what we need to understand and keep at the forefront of our minds is that greatness exists in all of us. It is simply up to us to pull it out of ourselves. Regardless of personal circumstances, economic climates, and access to resources, it helps to maintain faith in the fact we each are more powerful than we think.

decide if they need to change them or not. They face the uncomfortable and take risks in order to create the life they want to live.

2. Be Clear Why You're Here I believe each of us is born with a life purpose. Identifying, acknowledging and honoring this purpose is perhaps the most important action successful people take. They take the time to understand what they're here to do, and then they pursue that with passion and enthusiasm.

We all have the ability to create the life we want. We just need to learn how to do it. Is there an exact "formula"? No, but there are certain common features that successful people exhibit and that anyone can practice. They are what can jumpstart your success and attract what you want in life. You'd be hard pressed to find any high achiever who doesn't live by the following 7 tips:

If you don't know what you're supposed to be doing, then just tune in to the signals around you. Looking toward others for help and guidance is helpful, but don't forget to stay tuned in to yourself—your behavior, attitude, likes and dislikes, and life experiences. Identify what's working and what isn't. If you need to, write it all down. You might be surprised by what you discover.

1. Take No Less than 100% Responsibility for Your Life

3. Decide What You Want

Everything about you is a result of your doing or not doing. Income. Debt. Relationships. Health. Fitness level. Attitudes and behaviors. That person who reflects back at you in the mirror is the chief conductor in your life. Say hello!

It sounds so simple, but here's the problem: I see plenty of people who are overly-busy yet who feel unsatisfied and unfulfilled. They are physically tired, spiritually drained, and far from where they'd like to be—as if they've been running on a treadmill going nowhere fast. Why? Because they haven't clearly mapped out what they want and then taken the steps to get there. Rather than identifying specific goals, milestones, and dreams (and I'm talking BIG dreams and goals here), they go through the motions day in and day out tackling unimportant tasks. They end up...you guessed it...going in circles and wasting lots of energy. In the meanwhile, they grow increasingly uninspired and out of touch with their authentic selves. This, of course, sets anyone up to living a life out of balance.

I think everyone knows this in their hearts, but the mind can play games, tricking plenty of people into thinking external factors are the source of failure, disappointment, and unhappiness. But the truth of the matter is that external factors don't determine how you live. You are in complete control of the quality of your life.

One of the main reasons why most people don't get what they want is they haven't decided what they want. They haven't defined their desires in clear and compelling detail. What does success look like to you? Not everybody's definition of success is the same, nor should it be.

Successful people take full responsibility for the thoughts they think, the images they visualize, and the actions they take. They don't waste their time and energy blaming and complaining. They evaluate their experiences and

Don't let your inner devil's advocate (or that incessant but unimportant To Do list) inhibit you from dreaming big. As soon as you commit to a big dream and really go after it, your subconscious creative mind will come up with big

One of the greatest myths that is pervasive in our culture today is that you are entitled to a great life and that somehow, somewhere, someone is responsible for filling our lives with continual happiness, exciting career options, nurturing family time and blissful personal relationships simply because we exist. But the real truth is that there is only one person responsible for the quality of the life you live. That person is you.

ideas to make it happen. You'll start attracting the people, resources, and opportunities you need into your life to make your dream come true. Big dreams not only inspire you, but they also compel others to want to play big, too.

4. Believe It Is Possible Scientists used to believe that humans responded to information flowing into the brain from the outside world. But today, they're learning that instead we respond to what the brain, based on previous experience, expects to happen next. In fact, the mind is such a powerful instrument; it can deliver literally everything you want. But you have to believe that what you want is possible. As you commit to believing in yourself, also make a commitment to toning down the complaint department. Look at what you are complaining about. I'm fat. I'm tired. I can't get out of debt. I won't ever get a better job. I can't stand the relationship I have with my father. I'll never find a soulmate in life. Really examine your complaints. More than likely you can do something about them. They are not about other people, other things, or other events. They are about YOU.

5. Believe in Yourself If you are going to be successful in creating the life of your dreams, you have to believe that you are capable of making it happen. Whether you call it self-esteem, selfconfidence or self-assurance, it is a deep-seated belief that you have what it takes; the abilities, inner resources, talents and skills to create your desired results. Have unwavering faith in yourself, for good and bad. Make the decision to believe that you create all your experiences. You will experience successes thanks to you, and you will experience pain, struggle, and strife thanks to you. Sounds a little strange, but accepting this level of responsibility is uniquely empowering. It means you can do, change, and be anything. Stumbling blocks become just that—little hills to hop over.

6. Become an Inverse Paranoid This one is straightforward: Imagine how much easier it would be to succeed in life if you were constantly

expecting the world to support you and bring you opportunity. Successful people do just that.

7. Unleash the Power of Goal Setting Experts on the science of success know the brain is a goal-seeking organism. Whatever goal you give to your subconscious mind, it will work day and night to achieve. To engage your subconscious mind, a goal has to be measurable. When there aren't any criteria for measurement, it is simply something you want, a wish, a preference, or a good idea. Sometimes we need to make just one initial goal to get started, and that's okay. At least it comes with a few actions to achieve. A first step simply can be making an immediate change in a single area in your life. Are you unhappy about something that is happening right now? Make requests that will make it more desirable to you, or take the steps to change it yourself. Making a change might be uncomfortable and overwhelming for you. It might mean you have to put in more time, money, and effort. It might mean that someone gets upset about it, or makes you feel bad about your decision. It might be difficult to change or leave a situation, but staying put is your choice so why continue to complain? You can either do something about it or not. It is your choice and you have responsibility for your choices. Bear in mind that you have to be willing to change your behavior if you want a different outcome. You have to be willing to take the risks necessary to get what you want. If you've already taken an initial step in the right direction, now's the time to plan more steps to keep moving you forward faster. Isn't it a great relief to know that you can make your life what you want it to be? Isn't it wonderful that your successes do not depend on someone else? So if you need just one thing to do different today than you did yesterday, make it this: Commit to taking 100% responsibility for every aspect of your life. Decide to make changes, one step at a time. Once you start the process you'll discover it is much easier to get what you want by taking control of your thoughts, your visualizations, and your actions! 

3 STRATEGIES For Building True Wealth By Donna Carletta

EMPOWER YOURSELF

M

any people don’t realize that strategies for building wealth actually requires you to build up your life mentally, emotionally, spiritually, and financially. The words “health” and “wealth” actually come from the same root, which means “wholeness” in the sense of being complete. When we do things to

make our lives wealthier, we should also be doing things to make our lives healthier. Surely, to attract wealth we have to be in business in some way, shape, or form. If we aren’t doing some kind of work, we aren’t attracting wealth.

Attract Wealth by Working It’s necessary to do some sort of work in order to attract wealth. This is even true of those who are financially independent. Granted, financially wealthy people don’t need to work on anybody else’s clock, but don’t be fooled, they’re still taking charge to ensure that work gets done. Also, remember that people don’t obtain wealth overnight. Yes, there are lottery winners who wake up rich after buying a single ticket, but more often than not, wealth is earned by hard work and being consistent. Patience is just as important as charting your progress toward wealth. If your current job isn’t meeting your needs to reaching financial freedom, then take action and look for a job that will pay you more. Or better yet, start your own business.

Attract Wealth Spiritually Wealth is energy, and energy by its nature must flow. The independently wealthy people who keep money working for them are creating, maintaining, and growing an energy flow, and that is a spiritual endeavor. Another spiritual principle for wealth creation that is widely recognized amongst those who are financially successful is tithing. Tithing is a principle that instructs a person to give away at least 10% of his or her money whether it’s weekly, monthly, quarterly, or annually to noble causes that have nothing to do with seeking profit. These causes are supposed to be things such as charities and philanthropic projects. Those who are financially successful say that what you give away returns to you in greater measure. So, when they do noble things with their money, they not only benefit others, but they benefit themselves, because that spiritual energy returns to them and brings them even more wealth than they give out. It’s an ongoing beneficial cycle. Take a look around your neighborhood for non-profit causes to support. Local schools, libraries, places of worship, park and recreation departments, or children’s organizations are all deserving of your support.

Attract Wealth with Positive Thinking Mentally, we attract wealth by creating a positive mental state where we fully understand and believe that we deserve to be wealthy. Once we have created this positive image in our minds, we must have a clear vision of what our lives will be like when we are wealthy. What will we be doing with our time? Where will we live? What things will we do? What will we give to others? Emotionally, we create within ourselves an attitude of gratitude. Having an attitude of gratitude (even for wealth that we don’t actually have yet) charges up our wealth attraction magnet and helps to bring about that which we know is coming to us.  Exceptional People Magazine  |  July - August 2018

Avoid These

9 Mistakes to Achieve Greater Success By Pat Markel

hile there are a wide variety of successful people in the world, they share many characteristics. One of these is the type of mistakes they avoid. There are certain errors or mistakes that significantly reduce the odds of success. If you eliminate these mistakes and you’ll find that your level of success will increase.

SUCCESSFUL PEOPLE AVOID MAKING THESE MISTAKES:

when the rubber hits the road, you should rely on your strengths.

6

Prioritizing poorly. The average person either fails to prioritize or does it poorly. Decide how you can spend your time most effectively. Get the most benefit from your time. How do you currently set your priorities?

9

Proceeding without a plan. The average person doesn’t have a plan for much of anything. Successful people have a plan for nearly everything. Instead of trying to figure it out as you go, try creating a plan and notice the difference in the results. Giving up too soon. Most of us give up far too easily. Your successful friends probably aren’t any smarter or more talented than you are, but they’re more persistent. Successful people simply keep going until they’ve achieved their objective. Repeating mistakes. If you could make a mistake one time, learn from it, and avoid making it again in the future, you’d be an incredibly powerful and successful person. Take a day and look back over your biggest failures and make a list of the mistakes you’ve made. What could you do differently next time?

4

Trying to change others. You’ve noticed how hard it is to change yourself, and you wanted to change. Changing someone else is even harder, because they don’t want to change. Attempting to change others is a poor way to spend your time. Instead, identify the capabilities of others and utilize their strengths.

5

Failing to take advantage of their strengths. You have a unique set of strengths. You may have been born with them or you may have developed them. It can be worthwhile to work on your weaknesses, but

Using emotions to make decisions. In most situations, your experience and logic are best for making important decisions. It’s easy to make a poor choice when feeling stressed, angry, or euphoric. When your mind is calm and relaxed, all of your intellectual capability is at your disposal. Procrastination. You don’t want tomorrow to be the busiest day of your week. Successful people get things done. It doesn’t get any simpler than that. Compare the most and least successful people you know. You’ll find a huge difference in their propensity for procrastination. Successful people avoid wasting time. Changing their mind frequently. Assuming you took your time to make a good decision, there will rarely be a time you should change your mind. Unsuccessful people change their minds frequently. That’s one of the reasons they fail to make progress. Successful people stay the course.

How many of these mistakes do you make regularly? Can you see how they limit your success? Sometimes, it’s more about avoiding the wrong things than doing the right things. Avoid the common mistakes that unsuccessful people make. Most of us don’t just make these mistakes, we repeat them again and again. Avoid the same mistakes successful people avoid and you can expect better results and more success in your life. 

Entrepreneurial Success: How to Enhance Your Mindset to Increase Your Revenue By Jon Crump

W

hile the first step to become an entrepreneur is determining a profitable business idea, the true foundation of entrepreneurial success rests within your mindset. A good idea can take you only so far. However, true determination to stop at nothing to achieve your goals can help you achieve extraordinary success. You may have hundreds - if not thousands - of competitors in your field. Many of them sell the exact same product as you. Yet, one business may be raking in huge monthly revenue, while the other can barely get off the ground.

So, what separates these two businesses? It's the difference in mindset of the entrepreneurs behind the ventures. The successful businessperson boasts a heightened business mindset that leads to higher revenue. The unsuccessful one may know a thing or two about business, but he's okay with doing the bare minimum. Below is a list of key differences in the mindsets of a successful and unsuccessful entrepreneur. Adopt the mindset philosophies of the successful entrepreneur and you'll discover that your profits increase as well!

The Mindset of the Successful Entrepreneur • Always reaches higher and focuses on the up-sell. He or she knows how to turn $5 into $20.

• Values his intuition over the advice of another. He truly understands what's best for his business.

• Has an elevator speech prepared and will recite it to anyone who's willing to listen.

• Keeps moving when things are slow. She’s always quickly moving on to the next task that must be done to improve her business.

• Values the power of marketing and employs proven marketing tactics. He believes that a dollar in revenue is better than no revenue at all. • Feels embarrassed to toot his own horn and often downplays the complexity of his business. • Employs marketing tactics only when business is slow. He's all about cutting corners, and when business is booming, marketing expenses seem unnecessary. • Allows her personal low self-esteem to translate into her business leadership. Because of this, her marketing, networking, public perception, and revenue take a hit. • Customer service is an afterthought. She takes personal offense to most customer complaints. • Is a problem solver only when it comes to menial

issues, but he cracks under pressure when he encounters hard times. Ignores his intuition and runs to all the wrong people for advice before taking action. He takes advantage of the slow times in his business to indulge in his personal life while he should be working. May thrive under pressure, but it's her fear that keeps her going rather than her optimism. This same fear can cause panicky, unwise decisions. Lets his ideas lie dormant until his business is bringing in more money. Stands his ground and he does so with an overly aggressive and threatening attitude. His business mindset is out the window when he feels as if he's being taken advantage of.

As you can see, a heightened mindset - a willingness to succeed and take risks for your business is the foundation for attaining higher profits. By following the mindset of the successful entrepreneur, you'll experience the success you've been dreaming about in your business.

Now it’s time to get started. Change your mindset – change your life. 

LIGHTER SIDE OF

Life

LIGHTER SIDE OF LIFE

What’s for

Dinner By Dorothy Rosby

There’s about 45 seconds between the time the family walks through the door at the end of the day and the time the kids start asking, “What’s for dinner?” I’m an empty nester, but there’s still someone asking “What’s for dinner?” Me. And there are days I don’t even wait 45 seconds. I’ve found I’m more likely to have an answer if I’ve bothered to plan. You know that old saying: A failure to plan is a plan to eat fried egg sandwiches for supper. In an effort to plan better—and have enough eggs for breakfast—I went to the source of all wisdom, the internet, for some meal planning tips. I still had a fried egg sandwich for dinner last night. But, maybe these will work better for you: Spend time each week looking through recipes. Good idea, but be careful. I once had three eggplants rotting in the refrigerator because I was so taken by a photo of Eggplant Parmesan I’d seen in a women’s magazine. I guess I was less taken with the idea of making it. Create a place for recipes I’m proud to say I have a three-ring binder full of recipes I’ve tried and liked. I’m not as proud to say I also have an entire drawer stuffed with recipes clipped from magazines. I call it my Dream Drawer because I dream that someday someone will come into my home and cook them for me. Include your family in your planning One website suggested family cooks ask the family what they’d like to eat in the coming week. If you’re out of ideas, why not? And then you could ask them to make it. plan for leftovers I love leftovers. I’m not sure my family feels the same. But I’ve found that if I cook enough on Sunday, I can get out of cooking for the next four days. And freezing meals saves time later. Unfortunately, if we didn’t like it the

first time, chances are good we won’t like it any better after it’s been sitting in the freezer for a month and a half. always make a shopping list And I’d add, always remember to bring it to the store. That saves you from having to rely on memory which, in my case, is notoriously unreliable. Witness the fact that I keep forgetting to bring my list to the store. Many times, I’ve come home, tired and hungry, planning to make something quick, like spaghetti with meat sauce, then realized I’d forgotten to pick up one of the ingredients—like the spaghetti. Finally, get organized. You know what happens to perishables in a disorganized refrigerator. They perish. Even non-perishables can’t last forever. I keep buying things I already have because I don’t know I have them. That explains why I have two 14-ounce containers of mustard. The label says 14 ounces equals 79 servings. That’s 158 servings of mustard in a home where there are no hot dogs—that I know of.  Exceptional People Magazine  |  July - August 2018

Peanut-Crusted Chicken For a time, it was considered wise to avoid peanuts because of their fat content. Times have changed. Health conscious people now know that peanuts hold no damaging cholesterol. Their high protein content makes them a good choice for anyone, particularly for vegetarians. Peanut-encrusted chicken is high in protein, low in fat and has all natural ingredients. Ingredients: 4 boneless, skinless chicken breast filets 1 cup salted peanuts 2 tablespoons canola oil 4 tablespoons honey Directions: 1.  Using a blender or coffee grinder, reduce the peanuts to a coarse mixture. Do not over grind or you will end up with dry peanut butter. 2.  Lightly salt and pepper the chicken breast filets and brush on a coating of honey for binding and flavor. Roll in the coarsely chopped peanuts and press the coating into the chicken with the back of a tablespoon. 3.  Coat a deep frying pan with canola oil and bring heat to high. Place the chicken in the skillet, reduce heat to half, and cook until golden brown, or about half an hour to 45 minutes. 4.  This dish can also be baked, eliminating the use of oil. Bake the filets at 350 degrees for 45 minutes or until crusty brown on top. The dish can be sliced and served piping hot as an entree or it can be served with your favorite dipping sauce as an appetizer. 44
