“Since you get more joy out of giving joy to others, you should put a good deal of thought into the happiness that you are able to give.” — Eleanor Roosevelt

Dear friends, It has been roughly two years since our view of the world changed to one of social distancing and smiles shrouded by masks. Life slowed down somewhat and there was a time for quiet contemplation. The happiness we used to share by a simple smiling gesture or handshake was no longer an option and my thoughts, like many, turned to what it meant to give of yourself and help citizens and neighbors during this difficult time. This is the fourth Elms Magazine since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic and in these past 24 months, the Elms community has only strengthened in its gratitude and resolve to give happiness. I saw this first-hand over two weekends of alumni reunions this past October. There was no quiet contemplation about what we should be thankful for. It was obvious. It was written on the joyful faces of our 50-year Golden Blazers, the Distinguished Alumni Award recipients, and all the other wonderful alumni and volunteers who came together. And now, with the academic year 2021-2022 well underway, the faculty and staff of the College of Our Lady of the Elms are hard at work giving our students the tools that they need for a life of meaning and purpose. Therefore, when I reflect on what it means to give, I now know the answer—a little of your time, a smile, a helping hand, and an Elms community that supports each other. They give continuously and in every way possible. The smiles on the faces at the reunion reminded me that the value of the Elms family is greater than any monetary worth. This issue of the Elms Magazine features our traditional Annual Report. It is quite fitting that it is anchored by our past, present, and future. • Reunions bring back to campus students of yesteryears, reminding us of the enduring Elms spirit. • The appointment of Deborah Vo ’89 and events such as the Executive Leadership Breakfast affirm why Elms College is relevant today. • Our current students represent, of course, the future. Through their efforts and accomplishments, we get a glimpse of tomorrow. Thus, this annual report is not about the money given, it is about the wealth of the community that continues to extend a hand to our current students walking the campus grounds, the students learning online, and all of our future Elms College students. Best wishes for a happy and giving holiday season,

Harry E. Dumay, Ph.D., MBA President

St. Mary’s, Alaska, birthplace of Deborah Alstrom Vo ‘89

“Sorry, we could not calculate driving directions from your location to St. Mary’s, Alaska”. This is the message from Google Maps when trying to travel from Elms College to St. Mary’s, Alaska, birthplace of Deborah Alstrom Vo ‘89. She grew up here on the Lower Yukon River as the youngest of ten children. When Deborah graduated high school at age 16, she wasn’t sure where she wanted to attend college, but she did know she wanted to travel to a place far away, someplace new, a place where no one would know her. She wanted to go to a college where she could discover who she was and what she might become. She didn’t know then, but Vo would become one of President Biden’s appointees for the U.S. Arctic Research Commission.

Deborah obtained her Bachelor’s degree in Business from Elms College and later, after moving to Anchorage, Alaska, she furthered her education with a Master’s of Business Administration from Alaska Pacific University. But what she discovered while attending Elms impacted the future life decisions she would make. She purposely chose each job opportunity she would take in her professional life. When asked what advice she would give to Elms’ students today, she said, “Find your passion. Utilize your education and experience to move your passion to purpose.” Elms gave Deborah the support to realize her passion. “I was influenced by Sister Carol Hebert in Campus Ministry, Sister

“Elms helped me find my purpose through passion.”

The U.S. Arctic Research Commission is a presidentially appointed advisory body that outlines and recommends scientific researched goals and objectives for the Arctic. The policy, priorities, and goals include continual monitoring and understanding of the natural resources of the Arctic that have a global impact, improvement of the Arctic infrastructure, providing additional access to resources, and easing the pressures challenging the health, social and behavioral well-being of the communities. Deborah Vo became the commission’s new Indigenous representative on September 24, 2021, because of her expertise in tribal governance, energy, infrastructure, and health care. She is a program officer at the Rasmuson Foundation, which works toward promoting a better life for Alaskans through health, social services, housing, and arts and culture. Deborah was also a former special assistant for rural affairs to U.S. Senator Lisa Murkowski.

Eleanor Dooley, Sister Mary Dooley, former president of Elms College, and Sister Maxyne Schneider, then Dean of Students. They were all supportive, inspiring, kind, and most importantly, listened with their hearts. I stand on the shoulders of these great women.” Elms also provided the building blocks to build on her purpose as Deborah confessed, “The public speaking class was so hard but taught me so much. It showed me how to be courageous and step out of my comfort zone.” Deborah’s passion is to promote equity for the Indigenous people of Alaska and share their traditional knowledge. Her purpose is to advocate for the indigenous communities—to start and continue the conversation about issues such as education, energy, public safety, clean water, and infrastructure. As a reflection of the mission of the Sisters of St. Joseph, Deborah Vo is continuing to rise to the occasion and give back to the Alaskan community and each intentional step she has taken since attending Elms has led her to the U.S. Arctic Research Commission appointment. 

Internship goes Virtual Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, virtual internships were virtually unheard of. Everything changed, though, when students were suddenly forced to stay home, attend Zoom classes, and figure out ways to get the allimportant hands-on experience that employers value. For junior Michelle Redenz ’23, a nursing major from Amherst, this meant canceling her plans to study abroad in Jordan over the summer, and instead find a digital opportunity to learn about public health. “I would say it was a fair trade off,” said Michelle, who completed a six-week virtual internship with three public health organizations in Kisumu, Kenya. “After I grieved not being able to go abroad, I decided to maximize the situation.” Michelle’s internship began with the Kisumu County Department of Health. For two weeks, she did everything from analyzing COVID-19 data sets to participating in discussions with epidemiologists, doctors, and communications specialists. Her cohort then moved on to work with experts at one of Kenya’s largest teaching hospitals, Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching & Referral Hospital (JOOTRH). This was invaluable, Michelle said, because she connected with nurse managers from several units throughout JOOTRH, all of whom were just as eager to ask questions of the students as they were to answer questions about health outcomes in Kisumu. The final two weeks of her internship were equally beneficial for her future career as a nurse, Michelle said. She focused on conducting research at KEMRI, the Kenya Medical Research Institute. Making connections between research and evidence-based nursing practice was indispensable, Michelle said, since it will give her a strong foundation for providing culturally sensitive care in the future.

“We bonded over this experience that none of us expected to have.”

Elms prepared Michelle to think critically about the ways that culture and geography influence public health. Taking core classes in the liberal arts, for example, helped her think about health as a continuum, one that extends beyond clinical diagnosis. Having this framework going into her internship was key, Michelle said, since it put everything into context. Collaborating with peers made her internship experience that much sweeter, Michelle added. The group was spread across the globe, including eastern Massachusetts; Texas; Seattle; Delhi, India; and Amman, Jordan. “We bonded over this experience that none of us expected to have. The group brought this super diverse conversation to the table every single day.” While a virtual internship can’t replicate the experience of physically being in a new country, it served as an example of how nursing majors can take their education abroad. “Even if you’re in your hometown, you can still experience global perspectives, and apply them in the future.” 

Reflecting on the “New Normal”

Biology Student’s Path is Firmly Paved Out Majoring in Biology and Biotechnology, Victor Ivancev ’23 has a very busy schedule. While most of his classmates are just beginning to think about life after college, Victor’s path is firmly paved out: he’s already been accepted into Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine. And his prion protein research at Elms College will serve as a solid foundation for research he will conduct in medical school. “I had many different colleges to choose from, but none provided me with the opportunities that Elms has,” Victor said. 

On a beautiful day in June, Elms College hosted its fourth annual Executive Leadership Breakfast with Baystate Health President and CEO, Mark A. Keroack, MD, MPH, giving the keynote address, “The New Normal: What Will It Be and When Will It Be Here.” The event was held outside on the Keating Quad with adherence to ElmsSafe plan protocols for the limited number of in-person attendees and was also streamed live on social media for the online audience. During his address, Dr. Keroack hoped that area residents would have a stronger appreciation of connecting with one another. “The virus was trying to teach us a great lesson, if only we learn it. The health and wellbeing of each of us is connected to the health and wellbeing of all of us.” The following sponsors contributed to make the breakfast possible: Westfield Bank, Chicopee Savings Bank Charitable Foundation, O’Connell Oil Associates, Baystate Health, Big Y Supermarkets, Marois Construction, Health New England, Freedom Credit Union, The O’Connell Companies, Aramark, Collins Electric Company, Fuss & O’Neill, Discount Office Furniture, Polish National Credit Union, and Teddy Bear Pools & Spas. 

2020-2021 ANNUAL REPORT

The continued generosity of our alumni and friends allows us to give outstanding support to our students and advance important initiatives. One example of this was the vaccination assistance program in partnership with Big Y Foods. During the spring of 2021, our school of nursing students assisted in the operation of two vaccination clinics in East Longmeadow and Greenfield. While gaining invaluable experience, these students helped thousands of Western Massachusetts residents get vaccinated against COVID-19. In the wake of this ongoing pandemic, the college has welcomed one of its largest freshman classes to campus for the fall of 2021. Elms has shown that as an institution, and as a giving community, it can overcome obstacles and thrive. The College of Our Lady of Elms continues to show a strong financial standing in part because of the generosity of our donors. This annual report presents some of the numbers that showcase the generosity of our alumni, benefactors, and friends that have contributed to the increasing financial strength of the college. Thank you for all that you do to support Elms College.

IN TRIBUTE Many Elms benefactors choose to make gifts throughout the year in memory of beloved family members and friends. Others choose to honor people meaningful in their lives, such as former teachers, parents, classmates, children, friends, or family. We appreciate the thoughtfulness of those benefactors in choosing to recognize their loved ones in this way. W AY S O F G I V I N G An Elms College education is a stepping stone for many of its graduates to lead lives full of meaningful work, success, and service to others. It is an investment that yields tremendous personal dividends. Gifts of all sizes allow us to provide the financial assistance that many of our students need to reach their academic goals, to develop innovative academic programs, to respond to the demands of today’s world, and to acquire and improve our human resources, facilities, and equipment. Many of our students have access to the Elms only because of benefactors like you who support what we do and how we do it. Your gift really does make a difference here.

• Gifts of Cash • Gifts of Securities • Matching Gifts

Should you find an error or omission, please bring it to the attention of the Office of Institutional Advancement at (413) 265-2403. Please note that an individual’s name may appear on several lists, and also that some benefactors have requested that their gifts be anonymous.
