Austin Beer Guide - Winter 2013

FROM THE EDITORS

I always enjoy the winter months. Holidays, fires, rich desserts, family, savory foods, time off work, “cold” weather, booze, relishing the good times; incentives all to enjoy more beer and nostalgia. Don’t get me wrong, beer is great year round, but there’s just something about this period of Earth’s rotation around the sun that gets my liver drooling like nothing else. This time of year can make a soul real warm and fuzzy in more ways than one. I believe the word I’m looking for is “cheer.” Google dictionary spits out “cheerfulness, optimism, or confidence,” while Merriam-Webster describes it as, “a happy feeling or attitude.” Cheer, yeah. It fits nicely. No need to save the receipt on that one. This issue we hit all the winter cheer watermarks. You want your nostalgia? Indulge in the Editors’/Readers’ Best of 2013 results on page 17. Savory foods much? Not even Keith Richards could deny the satisfaction found in the heavenly pairing of pizza and beer (p. 26). Need a time with “family” and friends fix? How about a bike pub crawl (p. 32)? Jonesing to relish the good times? Can’t beat reflecting on Texas brewers bringing home oodles of Great American Beer Festival medals—enough to make the cash for gold folks drool (p. 24). Yeah, it’s been a good year with lots to look back on in fond reflection. 2013, you brought us updated brewing laws, new brew pubs, new bars, riches of new out-of-state breweries, lots of new faces in our warm beer community, and plenty of cheer-inducing tasty beers. And best of all, I think we have all, for the most part, stopped saying “crushing it,” when referencing a satisfying accomplishment or action. Yeah, thanks for crushing it 2013. We wish happy holidays, winter months, and plenty of cheer for you and yours. –CT Chris Troutman Aaron Chamberlain Josh Spradling Shawn Phillips

’Tis the Season’s Drinking EVER WONDERED WHAT YOUR FAVORITE BREWER PAIRS WITH HIS CHRISTMAS HAM? We did too. So we ditched the usual Season’s Drinking format. OVER A PINT

Dean Schlett of Growler Room ON ONE OF NOVEMBER’S FIRST “COLD” AFTERNOONS WE SHARED A PINT WITH DEAN SCHLETT, OWNER OF THE GROWLER ROOM ON BURNET ROAD, TO TALK GROWLER CULTURE, FRESH BEER, AND HIS FUTURE EXPANSION OVER A FRESH PINT OF (512) BRUIN. ABG: Alright, so what did you pour us today? What are we drinking? Dean: This is the latest seasonal from (512). This is the Bruin. Yeah It’s really good, especially with this cold snap we’ve got right now. Good fall, crisp beer. It’s got a good malt backbone to it. And we’re just barely past noon here, so it’s good for that too. Ha, yeah. Good cocoa flavor to it, and when it

warms up a little bit you get some good raison notes out of it. That’s what we’re having. Yeah, I guess with Growler Room part of your philosophy is to put on beers that folks can’t get easily in package form? Right, the draft only stuff does really well for us but the beer that is available in package, that we put on, it does well also because people love that fresh draft beer taste, you know? Stuff in a bottle and can, it’s good, serves a purpose, but when you can get something on draft it just tastes so much fresher and so much better. So we try to just focus on the draft only stuff but of course that does really well for us. Right, right. Yeah. And you guys have kind of made a niche as far as having the stuff that’s draft only but you’ve also worked with a lot of new out-of-state breweries coming in town and even breweries that aren’t distributing

on a large part in Austin to get a lot of stuff here before you would see it on a shelf at HEB or Spec’s or what not. Right. There’s been a few out-of-state breweries that have come in, Founders for instance—they were draft only for the first month that they came into the state—so we’ve done our homework and try to stay on top of that stuff to see what we can get on that’s new to the Austin market whether it’s coming in from other parts of Texas or out-of-state. So tell me, what’s the philosophy behind Growler Room? In a nutshell, what do you want people to think of when they think of Growler Room? I want people to view us as a place they can come get good beer, good service at a fair price—and if that’s what people say about us at the end of the day, I’m thoroughly pleased with that. Yeah, we try to offer and educate people, because there are bars and other places that do growler fills but they also serve pints or they offer food, and nothing against any of that, that’s great, but we can take time with someone since we are just doing growler fills. I like to use the phrase “growler filling station” instead of “growler bar.” “Bar” connotates sitting here having a pint, but we are a filling station. You come in, fill up and take it away. But I like to think that people can come in and not be intimidated and we can take time to educate them whether it’s someone. . . there are people that come in and say “I don’t know anything about craft beer. I drink this. Can you tell me about something or let me sample something you think I might like?” So we can help them get into craft beer whether they’re just starting out from scratch or they’ve got a little bit of knowledge of craft beer and we can take them further into craft beer. So I like that we can take time and have a more personalized beer experience with a customer as opposed to somewhere else where they’re just looking at the taps and they’re just the next person in line getting, just getting something they know from a brand or recognize the handle. We can guide them and ask them “what do you like?” and offer them several choices of things we have that they can get into and will enjoy drinking. I want people to leave out of there with something they’re going to enjoy and come back and repeat the process. I agree. I feel like you guys do offer a little more curated of an experience than just taking a growler up to a bar. And like you said, nothing against that, it’s a great

service, but this feels a little more like going to a tobacco shop and talking to a guy who knows the blends and everything and smelling everything and having the ability to pick that person’s brain as opposed to just grabbing it at a bigger store or whatnot. Yeah, so that’s a cool service you guys do. Y’all have been around for almost a year now, right? Yeah. March 1st 2013 is when we started pouring beer for the first time in here. It was Friday, March 1st. And that was with how many taps? We started with 16 and about a month later we expanded it to 24. So, pretty good percentage wise expansion right away. But we could tell that 16 wasn’t quite enough and I debated 12, 16, 24 when we first started and I thought “well, let’s just start with 16 and see where we go” and realized right away we could support 24. We could probably support a little bit more but I think that’s where the other location comes in. Right. So, yeah. Tell me about what’s coming up in the future here. When I came up with the idea I knew we could put this one central and then we could grow and have something north, something south, something northwest and make it like a convenience store- just make it more convenient and closer to people who live in different parts of Austin. So I’d been looking all summer. Once this one, I knew this would work but if it was just this one store I would have been happy with that. But after a couple of months and we had people coming from south Austin, from Round Rock, Pflugerville, people coming from Cedar Park, Leander, they were asking us, “would you open one south?” “would you open one close to my house?” So I knew Austin could support another growler room. So I’ve been looking the past few months and I was just looking for something that was ready to go, the closest, the easiest to get opened. Quickest to get opened. And we’d found a few spaces up north that didn’t quite work out, but I found this one on East Oltorf that’s great. It’s a really good location and I think it’s going to do more volume than this store. It’s at 2400 East Oltorf. It’s at Oltorf and Willow Creek which is just one block west of Oltorf and Pleasant Valley. So it’s going to serve all the new development on Riverside, anything further south and it’s even accessible for people that are south west they come Ben White and get to us. We are just a few minutes away from 35 and Ben White.

What’s the projected opening? That one will probably connect sometime in January 2014. Waiting on permits and stuff to come through. We’re over there now painting and doing some cosmetic stuff getting it ready and realistically, January. I think that’s about the right timing for the permits and also, here with the Internet business, we got so busy from Thanksgiving to Christmas. I work 8–10 hours a day, 7 days a week Thanksgiving to Christmas with all of our Internet orders. And that’s all the custom pint glasses and growlers and steins that you guys do as well. Yeah, the personalized products and then even just the other stuff the beer glasses and beer steins, so the timing works for that to do it after we get through the holiday season. So what’s the East Oltorf one going to be like tap wise? Is it going to be the same kind of you fill a growler and you kind of chat and you leave or is there going to be any like service as far as pints go? It’s going to be the same as this. The whole growler filling station idea. That one has more room so it could do pint service at some point but I’m still not quite sure. You know at some point the two interfere with each other. If you have people bellied up to the bar, drinking pints, and then someone comes in with a growler, do they hand it over the bar? You can’t take as much time it detracts. And I think

that’s the main the thing. It detracts from that personalized experience where people can come in and not feel intimidated. I really don’t want to get away from that. That’s kind of the heart of all this; being able to take time with a customer. We want them to take it away and consume it, but we by no means rush them in and out. It’s not that. We want them to take as much time as they need to decide what they want and take it home, take it to a party, a friends house, cook out, whatever it is. So, I think serving by the pint, it just, doesn’t really fit with that we are trying to do. We have people coming in here and they assume they can buy a pint, and it’s understandable because there’s taps in the wall, there’s stools, there’s a bar, but there are plenty of places to go sit, have a pint, watch the game, have a bite to eat, you know we send them to go to Pinthouse, go to Pour House, go to Draught House. There’s plenty of places that you can go get a pint and enjoy yourself—so we just want to be different than that. We want that personalized growler filling experience, like I said. Yeah. I agree. Yeah, stick with what you’re good at. I think you’ve got a great thing going and we really look forward to the future expansion in East Oltorf and hopefully beyond. Thanks for the pint Dean and for talking with us. You bet. Thanks y’all.

BARKEEP’S

BREWER’S BRAIN

From the Mind of Habeab Kurdi of Hi Hat NOT EVERYTHING IS FOR EVERYONE, and that’s a good thing. That is how we have such amazing diversity in our breweries, our brewers, our bartenders, bars and beers. Don’t fancy a certain style or a certain methodology, that is no reason or means to turn negative and start bashing, more so it’s an opportunity to understand why it’s liked or appreciated by the other sect and realize why it isn’t appealing to you. When someone comes into the Hi Hat Public House and declares, “I’m really picky about my beer, I only like Miller Lite,” that’s not grounds to seriously belittle them or disparage who they are as a person. Perhaps grounds for a light playful joke, but in all seriousness, I want that person to understand why they like their beer of choice, and also how they can go about tasting some different beers we have and get them to appreciate beer from other breweries and styles. This particular person I started with the least hoppy ale I had on hand, then a hoppy pilsner, to show how similar beers can be but how drastically different they are. I never, ever want to be labeled a snob. A nerd, geek, enthusiast, fanatic, sure. But a snob? Nope. And people out there not immersed in the craft beer or Austin beer scene usually view those on the inside as snobs. I hope we are all doing great work to change that. Because in my more formative years I viewed people that were greatly invested in wine as snobs, looking down their noses at those of us that didn’t know what a good vintage cabernet was or what varietals were drier than others. Then, thanks to a friend who wanted me to appreciate wine in ways I never had before, my eyes—and

palate—were opened to a whole new world, a fantastic point of view. I equated it to tacos, the best food in the world. There is no “best taco” out there, though everyone has their opinion on what type of taco is the best, what type of tortilla should be used, what can go into a taco, and what the best taqueria in town is. But it would be a shame, I told the Miller Lite drinker, if you tried just one taco, settled on that as the only good representation of a taco, and never tried to like any other taco ever again. Somewhat stunned that I wanted to have discourse, about the glories of tacos and beer (which would be my choice for a last meal), and tried to include her instead of bemoan her, she tried a few other things I suggested as well. The Miller Lite drinker above eventually ordered a Six Point Sweet Action, and a second one at that. Had I berated her love of light lagers and pointed out how devoid of taste, body and aroma the beer was, she most likely would have scoffed, settled on a Lone Star, and that would have been that. I

may have made a lighthearted joke off the bat, but I made sure she knew it was in jest and that I wasn’t trying to change her world, I wasn’t attempting to make her shun her brand and immediately become a lover of all things craft beer, I wasn’t trying to persuade her to ditch her brand of choice all at once and never buy it again, but to mingle other beers into the collection. To realize that diversity is a grand thing, and that there are many people right here in town working their asses off for the greater good of beer and communal spirit. I, for one, am not a big lager fan, but that doesn’t mean I won’t try new lagers on the market or that I don’t keep exploring to find ones that I do like, and I also appreciate why people do like lagers. The Austin beer community represents many things to many people, but when you sit down and talk usually it all comes back to the same thing, this is a community and we’re all pulling for each other and hope the best for everyone. I know coming from a different background—journalism—I was a tad apprehensive about how the community would view a somewhat outsider coming into the craft beer realm and taking over a bar, but those silly notions were dispelled in less than a day, and frankly that’s what I expected deep down. Give truly to passions and people in this town, and it will turn right back around with a gigantic bear hug (or an awesome cry-five from Jake Maddux). Which brings me to my next point, people’s favorite pastime in Austin— griping.

Yes, the city is changing, growing, becoming something different than it used to be. Well, that’s what happened to all of us. We grew, changed, became something different. If this city weren’t growing, we wouldn’t have the fine breweries that we have now because there wouldn’t be enough demand for them and the culture in the city would be exactly how it was 10 years ago. On top of that, how many brewers in town aren’t from Austin? Should they be shunned, sent back to whence they came? Hell no. Are they “part of the problem?” Hell no. I never tell anyone “don’t move to Austin.” You want to move here? Great! You’ve got to put the people somewhere. But I do try to convey to newcomers to our astounding city that there is room for everyone to have a good time and get what they want out of Austin if they join the community and communal spirit. If not, the city and its people will eventually reject them. Add to the community, don’t detract from it. The bars and brew pubs that have sprouted all over town and continue to do so is because of the growth and the immense passion and knowledge that most Austinites have. That ferments in the beer community as well. Not everything is for everyone, and that’s a good thing. Embrace it, and let’s have a beer together.

Habeab Kurdi is bar manager/beer buyer/beer whisperer at Hi Hat Public House.

ALRIGHTY, KIDDOS. IT’S THAT TIME OF YEAR AGAIN WHERE WE ALL LOOK BACK through beer tinted glasses at the previous twelve months in our rearview mirror and feel obliged to list and rank the high points of the last 365 days. The plethora or so of you who voted had your chance to voice your opinions, and you did so to your hearts’ content. Folks in Austin love a lot of things, but mostly we love sharing opinions and listing local cultural currency, and you guys and girls did not disappoint this time out. There were few surprises amongst the results with a good amount of the past years’ winners representing well, along with a few fresh faces placing their flags on the “best of” landscape. Between us four editors, there was much discussion, deliberation, debate, and possibly a few tense moments and hurt feelings as we hammered out our collective ten choices over several nights and more than several beers. Although we did not agree with our readers’ majority picks, we respect you and our differences and think we can successfully coincide in the dichotomy of juxtaposing opinions just as long as you all get your shit together and on the same page as us in 2014. Ah, who am I kidding. A great society is built upon the opportunity to debate ideas and in that case we are living amongst the golden years of Austin beer. You, our dear readers, placed several of the younger, more exciting establishments and beers on the top of your lists, while we, possibly showing our age and “dad-ness,” veered closer to the established, proven, consistent folk. Perhaps this poll has become more an anthropologic study than a mere “best beer of 2013” list? Whatever. Enough reading, time for those extremely satisfying lists we all jones for. After the departure of head brewer Steve Anderson in 2012, many wondered about the fate of Live Oak, but in 2013 under the steady hand of new head brewer Dusan Kwiatkowski the little brewery that could, not only maintained their current trajectory, but put their shit into overdrive (and not in a “let’s throw everything in a barrel” way). Be it the world renowned hefe, the award winning Primus, the limited Keller Pilz, the odd duck Helles Rauchbier, the outstanding new dunkel, or the exciting return of the Pale for the 2,000th batch, Live Oak has banged out an incredible arsenal of beers that make our beer town proud to call our own.

The brew pub north of the “border” is where we plant our flag this year. NXNW has been slinging exceptional beers and food since the late 90s and have the chops to prove it. From the highly anticipated yearly release of the award winning Barton Kriek to the like a clock consistent house beer lineup, to the delectable barrel aged releases, NXNW set a standard for Austin area brew pubs. And this year especially, owner and founder Davis Tucker has set himself apart as a leader amongst the Austin and Texas brewing community with his work to support the monumental legislation changes last spring, his charity project 1,400 Miles in which he cycled 1,400 miles to Denver, CO to raise awareness for prostate cancer, and his overall care and concern for the Austin brewing climate.

When Amos Lowe and Brian “Swifty” Peters made their announcement to leave their previous brewing positions to blaze a path for their own joint, all Austin craft beer drinkers’ hearts swelled with anticipation. Anticipation is high to see what these two stallions of brewing, released from their corrals, can do when let loose to brew to their wyld stallyn’s hearts’ content. With Mark Jensen manning the stern, Tim “Jesus” Stevens kicking ass in the kitchen, and assistant brewer and pint slinger CJ West on the brewing crew, ABGB are poised to become a beacon of brewing and drinking excellence in Austin and beyond. Go for the beer, stay for the pizzas, the garden, and the good times.

Perhaps it was its wider availability or transition into cans, but this beer graced our taste buds and quenched our thirsts more than any other in 2013. Like Wilco in a can, Hans’ is perfect for everything: mowing the lawn, CHECK! Relaxing in the pool, CHECK! Preparing your tax return, CHECK! Pairing with ANY FOOD EVER, CHECK! Listening to music, hanging with friends, hiking with your dog, disc golf on a Sunday afternoon, working late, cleaning house, changing your oil, dealing with your in-laws, squabbling with your roommate. . . you get the idea. Besides the on board almanac of all things banal and hilarious at once, the Heavy Machinery series by Austin Beerworks has been one of most consistently anticipated brewery releases all year. Sure, it’s not just “one beer,” but we like that. It’s a concept based on a popular style and is used to explore the exciting variations the IPA style can be manipulated to yield for those drinkers adventurous enough to join ABW’s hoppy journey. At its heart, the Heavy Machinery experiment is an educational tool, and being the print nerds we are, we fucking love that. It’s been an exciting bi-monthly project and we hope to see what other shades of IPA the ABW crew can pump out in 2014.

Whether his skin and bones are hosting #shotgunfriday, #shitdang, Texas Tavern League, Fish Fry Bingo, or a myriad of other equally crafty entities, Tony is the living embodiment of Texas craft beer. Sure, it’s very popular to ride the Tony train these days. And we debated over this pick, but in the end came to the conclusion that Tony does more for Austin beer outside of Austin than anyone we could think of. And lest we forget what he’s done for Austin beer drinkers by ushering in new brews from beyond our city limits. On top of that, he’s an all around great guy. He’ll buy you a beer and shoot the shit with you, but be warned, just as soon as he’ll hold the door to the men’s room at Draught House for you, you’ll find yourself in the parking lot shotgunning and Instagramming with him in no time flat.

Now two years in, Hopfields has been hot on our radar since day one. Boasting one of Austin’s best curated tap walls and an inspired menu comprised of seasonal and locally roused plates, Hopfields is a beer + food (some may say sip + graze) force to be reckoned with. Owner Bay Anthon works tirelessly sourcing the best beers around the globe, nation, state, and city to inhabit his beloved tap wall and compliment their french influenced menu. All this encapsulated in a cozy wood-centric designed space in west campus puts Hopfields in our top spot for 2013.

They already cultivated a tap room experience above and beyond by pre-releasing all Greenhouse beers there first, but as of late summer, they made the change everybody was ready for and made moves to turn their tap room more into a proper public house than “sampling” room. And we were all ready. Suddenly Thursdays thru Sundays held so much more potential than before. Any possible “errand” to the east side was now side tracked by the always ready and willing Hops & Grain tap room, and with the smiling faces from William, Bob, and Jason behind the bar, it was just the medicine you needed to make it Monday to Wednesday.

Point being, yeah, there are a lot of very excellent craft beer bars populating our fair city these days, but our heart still belongs to that big ivy covered European styled pub with the crotchety-yet-loveable bartenders, always improving and evolving beer garden, constant beer line, parking lot drinking, dart dodging side door, and the untouchable dominating tap selection both local and beyond. GABF GTFO! WORDS BY ERIC PUGA / PHOTOS BY MATT ABENDSCHEIN

YES, THE 31ST EDITION OF THE GREAT AMERICAN BEER FESTIVAL IN DENVER, Colorado was put to bed way back in October, but its lingering effects are still being acknowledged across the beer landscape. Small brewers continue to nudge the wheels of craft beer into America’s consciousness by promoting their medal-winning wares to local enthusiasts, who in turn, help to shape the opinions of friends and family with subtle replacements for their typical and ordinary holiday intoxicants. Overall, it appears that things are taking shape nicely in the community of craft, and a large part of that understanding is built through the camaraderie and collusion of beer’s biggest annual showcase, where the nation’s movers, shakers, and insufferable hipsters part with their hard earned tolerance in exchange for a literal buffet of America’s finest beers. The experience of GABF is a bit like a greedy child whose eyes really do get far bigger than his ability to finish an entire serving of treats before succumbing to gastronomical illness. Crucial choices are to be made on which delights to favor, if the full amusement of the festival is to be both 1) enjoyed, and 2) remembered fondly. GABF is a very fast-paced event, a dissonance of single-ounce shots, costumed freaks shouting randomly and stupidly, beards, large bellies, a labyrinth of national treasures, and finally, a touch of gut rot from Little-League-Optimist-Club-quality edibles. Its a bit like having GWAR over for a four-hour dinner party. It’s why we love it. But more than the silliness of conquering a 624-brewery beer feast, GABF can best be described as a road trip to an away game featuring one’s favorite team. The competition for yearlong superiority of a particular beer style can become somewhat minimized by the brewery itself while in Denver so as not to appear competitively aggressive, but deep down, brewers—and fans alike—covet the tangible recognition for their grueling daily work. Naturally, those of us at the Austin Beer Guide are huge homers for the Texas contingency, which represented a state record 37 breweries at the 2013 festival. It should be noted that Texas brewers are notoriously adept game-day performers, and strolling the Southwest alley where Texas pours, confirmed that the state had something to prove. The lucid hype was intensified by favorable placement of the

PETICOLAS AND THE PEDALER

24

region near the entrance of the festival itself. It was impressive to witness the enthusiasm surrounding Texas beer, and the general sentiment of those in attendance was that the state delivered on its promise of something special. Nine of the Texas breweries in competition at GABF took home a grand total of 10 medals awarded by the festival judges, which paired nicely with the thousands and thousands of approving nods from the gallery of everyday festival-going patrons themselves. After all, isn’t that the true measure of success? We at The Guide strongly recommend that you come along one of these years to witness the theater that is the Great American Beer Festival, before we all kick the habit and move on to something less deadly. But maybe that will never happen.

BE ER PI ZZ & A AND ON THE EIGHTH DAY HE CREATED BEER. AND THE NINTH, PIZZA. AND THEN HE said, “NOW it’s good.” Pizza is probably without a doubt the best beer companion known to man. Though not always held in as high regard as other “craft” dishes, a solid slice in one hand and a pint in the other can’t be beat. They are culinary cousins from their DNA with foundations rooted in grains, yeast, water and supplementary flavoring components to an almost limitless end. For as many variations of beers there are equal amounts of pies. You like a meaty pie with savory red sauce, greasy pepperoni, spicy sausage, and bold vegetables, match that shit with an IPA. Or perhaps pesto, earthy spinach, acidic tomatoes, and salty olives are your bag? Chase that slice with an equally nuanced pilsner. The Austin Beer Guide scientists have spent more nights in the lab than OSHA would approve undergoing furious tests and experiments to conclude that there is statistically positive evidence finding that for every flavorful pie there is an equally flavorful and complimentary pint. You can’t argue with science, and neither will we. We love the ABGB and Pinthouse Pizza and they no doubt come to mind when thinking about pizza and beer, but we wanted to explore beyond the obvious. In a nutshell, here are a summary of the findings.

Delicious brick oven pizza, tiny hip interior, line outside . . . this must be NYC? No, it’s East Austin. Bufalina is the NKOTB and their killer pizza and small, yet well curated beer selection is making diners say “WTF!” That’s WTF in a good way. Bufalina is the brain child of Steven Dilley who’s been experimenting with making pizza since his days back in New York when the Bitch Beer girls were still in middle school. As mentioned, this place is not afraid of a queue. The best way to avoid this is to get there just as they open and get in their first seating. On a recent visit Live Oak Primus was pouring, but if it is not you can always choose from one of the five varied local beers on tap. It is hard to go wrong. Pizza is the same way. Blindly point to the menu and see what comes out of that pretty oven. And one more thing, if you eat here and then go home to write a Yelp review complaining about the “burnt crust” we owe you a punch in the stomach.

7101 Woodrow Avenue littledeliandpizza.com Pie and Pint Pair: The #7 + Hans’ Pils

If the Cleavers went out for pizza and beer, it would be to Little Deli. Tucked in the middle of the Crestview neighborhood, this BYOB sandwich and pie shop is part of a “locked in time” strip center that is conveniently anchored by the Minimax IGA grocery store. It’s pretty simple what you do here: leave the beer at home, get your friends together (kids welcome), order a few red and white pies, secure your picnic table outside, walk across the parking lot to IGA’s “beer cave,” grab beer, return to consume. Don’t worry about finding the latest whale, you’re here for beer and pizza. Deliciously thin NY style pizza that tastes as good fresh as it does cold the next morning. One just needs to perfectly chase the other, and the cave has plenty that will do the trick. If you don’t like the pairing, you have no one to blame but yourself.

Black walls, low lights, and jukebox turned to 11. This is your pizza dive. The original Parlor on North Loop is long gone, but the Hyde Park location has established itself as a craft beer pizza punk joint for more than half a decade. On the surface you might expect to find nothing more than endless pitchers of Lone Star, and while it’s there, there is also a healthy dose of Live Oak, (512) and Real Ale, along with a few other locals. If you’re lucky you may get to nurse a full pint of Whiskey Barrel Aged Double Pecan Porter while waiting for your pie. Fresh ingredients, a slightly sweet sauce, cheese carefully walking the line of “too much” and thicker crust give you just the base you need before you dive in for that second or third beer. Also of note, this is the only place on our list with a full bar so it just may be the perfect pizza and beer + shot stop you’ve been looking for.

Stanley’s Farmhouse Pizza was erected in beneficial proximity of the Jester King tasting room for all parties involved. Their farmhouse pizzas are assembled using locally sourced ingredients and forged by the flames of their formidable wood fired oven. Pair them with obviously fresh Jester King beer (or pours of the latest JK farmhouse ales from the brewery bar if you go during tasting room hours) or with one of the other local or otherwise excellent craft beers they regularly rotate through their taps. With no formal dining room, beer and pizza aficionados are free to enjoy their spoils amongst the oak trees scattering the Ceres Park grounds between Stanley’s and the Jester King brewery and tasting room. Albeit a bit out of town, the combo of fresh farmhouse pizza and farmhouse beers born in the Texas Hill Country are more than worth the thirty minute pilgrimage to this beer and pizza holy land.

“It’s too close to campus. . .” “I’m not a huge fan of New Haven style pizza. . .” We’ve heard all the excuses for why you have not eaten at Salvation Pizza. Cut it out. Sure they might have the smallest selection of beer of the places in this listacle, but the beers they do have are tasty and craftish. They usually have four beers on draft and a handful of bottles. Just get a Live Oak Hefe. A pitcher of Hefe. Oh, don’t be afraid of the wait staff. Think of Salvation as the Draught House of pizzas. Sure, they are not shining examples of super service, but they will get you some of the best pies in town. The #7 (basil, feta, artichoke hearts, black olive, red onion) pizza is highly recommended, but if you are looking for something a little more carnivorous, try the #6 (sausage, onion, jalapeno, black olive). Those two and a pitcher of beer, forget about it. They are planning to open two more locations in town, so no more excuses for not stopping in for a pie and a pint.

House Pizzeria has made a name for themselves serving clever brick oven artisanal pies in a low key environment with a well moderated dozen-ish taps and modest bottle collection. Their staple pies are all exemplary, but it’s the rotating seasonal specials that will really get you excited. And they rotate out their taps with exciting local seasonals and special releases with the same fervency as they do their pies. House uses locally sourced ingredients in tastefully tasteful combinations to create pies that err on the savory side but are balanced by just a slight bite from the wood fired oven and even more so with a cold one. Their towers host a few imports, but are mainly congregated by a thoughtful quickly rotating selection that is best kept up with via their Twitter account. And it’s worth paying attention because as kegs near their end they fire sale at a generous cut rate.

Blissful pizza and beer heaven works like so: you saunter into ESP, point to the slices or calzones that tickle your culinary fancy that day, they heat them up in the oven, you then take about ten paces east into the craft beer super center that is Sunrise and pick out an equally tasty beer to correspond with your pizza buddies getting crispy and melty next door, take your malted beverage choice back west and enjoy the delicious union of both on their small outdoor patio looking over the hustle and bustle of Anderson Lane. So simple, yet so satisfying. With as many eclectic and off the wall choices presented by ESP, it takes a bottle haven as stocked as Sunrise to find that perfect beer to pair their savant-esque ingredient combinations. BEER & LOATHING

Bike Pub Crawlin’ Down Burnet IT’S CRAZY TO ME THAT WE’VE PUBLISHED AS many Beer and Loathing features AND orchestrated as many bike pub crawls BUT have never combined the two. Amazing. As efficient (read lazy) as we think ourselves, this should have been a no brainer. Well, as I force fingertips to keys I actively rectify this error. If ABG are anything these days, we’re cutting corners. Actually, this B&L adventure is not only born of “efficient” intentions, we actually REALLY enjoy the crawls. It’s one of the few things our cold jaded beer media souls still muster up enough enthusiasm to elicit sparks behind our dead dull eyes. Like Viagra for the craft sloshy of heart. Yeah, they’re a good time and easy enough to simply enjoy moderately pumping your muscles between respectable beer slugging sessions without having to actively “appreciate” the beer beyond it’s instinctual ability to refresh body at the same time numbing it. The cure to the common beer event/bottle share/line fest/magazine release party… So of course it fit perfectly on the tail end of Austin Beer Week like an ironic suit and top hat on a monkey. Our adventure began on the final Sunday of said Austin Beer Week at the commuter friendly Black Star Co-op. This year was more legit than years past as we handed out wristbands to all riders. Fucking wristbands. That’s like one level below a copyright but without risking a C&D letter from one of those mega-craft asshole breweries that lost all cred when Costco and Sam’s Club started selling them by the pallet. The wristbands are also nice as they serve as a visual marker of all on the ride. Identifying folks on the ride from folks just riding their bikes to drink beer has always been difficult and embarrassing at best. “Hey, thanks for coming on the crawl!” “. . . I’m sorry?” Back to Black Star. We slugged back a few tasty Doc Vainglories and GABF bronze medal-winning Elbas while handing out wristbands and giving high fives. So epic were these beers and high fives we could have called the event a success at this point and continued on that blissful path, but we

an enjoyably ecclectic variety of Austinites just out to enjoy cycling and beer on a pleasant Sunday afternoon. It enlarged our dried-out hearts by almost five sizes seeing folks enjoy beer for beer’s sake and not for any other value like rarity, extremeness, Instagram-ibility, or Untappd credibility. With more glasses in hands than smart phones amongst ourselves, we knew we were in good company and it made those beers taste better and hills less tedious. Sooner than expected, 3:30 crept closer so we remounted our metal steeds and made west on North Loop to the legendary Billy’s on Burnet. Just like breweries dropping “craft” from their names, we wasted no time on the roads and quickly reassembled our line for beer. The bike pub crawl gods were smiling on us as it was perfect patio weather, and once again we enjoyed our beverages in the outdoors on Billy’s great patio overlooking Burnet road. Texas beers were on special, and this stop riders were drinking them by the pitcher. Unlike many “craft” bars these days, Billy’s only serves in the 16 and 64 ounce capacity and doesn’t give a fuck. Luckily, that afternoon neither did any of us as glistening vessels of Live Oak Hefe, Hops & Grain/Pinthouse Pizza Peach IPA, and Real Ale Hans’ Pils were scattered across the picnic tables like beer events on the October calendar. This was the first almost stall out. Bodies wearied just enough to crave a longer than 45 minute respite and enough alcohol

had pedals and pints to pound in our future and knew it would only get better each stop, so we moved on. Quicker than a fresh faced beer blogger or “brewery in planning” could create a Twitter account we made our way to Workhorse. Like literally, it only took 10 minutes. Bikes are crazy faster than you think. We descended upon this North Loop nouveaudive like graffiti on a fresh painted toilet stall. The Workhorse staff handily managed our line of sweaty, thirsty pedalers and with cold ones in hands we quickly devoured the back patio space. Real Ale Coffee Porters were abundant and satisfying after the short jaunt from Black Star. At this point, the brave started ordering a second a beer to slug down in the short 45 minute break in the action. This was the stop where the actual ride was first apparent as a personality. The refreshing thing about a bike pub crawl is that there are the usual suspects but also

See, writing is easy! We down our beers, kiss our wives and kids goodbye, and jump on our bikes for the last time for the pleasant down hill coast south to Draught House as the Autumn sun began to set and the temperatures lowered. It was “All Texas Beers for $3” night at Draught House and we were prepared to drink them all. In addition, Benan was out with his monster grill outfit converting heat to tastiness on brats and knockwursts and our burning leg muscles were ready for the protein. Plus amongst our brain cells to trick us that this wursts and beer are a classic one-two punch was as good as the afternoon could get. Yes, combo. Bringing his Colorado beer knowledge and inspiration to Austin, Josh Hare has opened one of Austin’s two East side breweries. With three year-round beers canned for easy use during your outdoor drinking endeavors, and a constantly rotating selection of Greenhouse beers, Hops & Grain has something for everyone. The ALT-eration took home gold at the 2012 World Beer Cup, and the Greenhouse lineup has grown to include a Baltic Porter, Belgian Porter, and the Volumes of Oak series of oak aged beers. They even collaborated on a beer with us called Night RYE-der. If that isn’t enough, Hops and Grain is an environmentally sustainable operation that uses up-cycled malted barley from brewing to make natural and wheat free dog treats called Brew Biscuits.

WE RECOMMEND HefeWeizen, Primus

Built by hand by Chip McElroy in a small (and now worn) building on the east side of town, Live Oak has been an Austin staple since 1997. They use an old-world style of brewing mostly practiced throughout Germany and the Czech Republic and utilize techniques such as open fermentation and secondary lagering on some of their styles to give their beers a very distinct Live Oak taste. This is best reflected in their Pilz and much beloved HefeWeizen.

Brewer Josh Wilson likes to keep his beers moving. Josh doesn’t adhere to the general brew pub rules that say you have to develop four solid recipes and keep those on year long while only reserving a few taps for experimentation and seasonals. After visiting Draught House for a few years, you may notice that Josh keeps a loose yearly brewing schedule with styles and specific brews mirroring the seasonal calendar.

Kevin Brand moved back to Austin from California in early 2008 to start the brewery and began brewing beer that summer. Brand’s initial lineup was the Wit, Pale, and IPA, but quickly added the Pecan Porter to the year round line up after the enormous reception it received as the first winter seasonal. Currently (512)’s beers are only available on draft but they have released a limited number of bottles of Whiskey Barrel Aged Double Pecan Porter (along with Wild Bear and THREE) in the past and sprinkled them around town. This summer they started their annual release of past anniversary beers. Their 5th Anniversary beer was a killer imperial stout, if you peep it on tap (or in ceramic bottles), drink it. Last winter they acquired two foeders to add to their barrel program. Only time will tell what sour and wild beers will start coming out of (512)’s doors.

Husband and wife Rob and Amy Cartwright started Independence Brewing Co. in South Austin in 2004, but were active members of the ATX brewing community long before. Rob began brewing at Austin’s Copper Tank (RIP) in 1994 and after meeting Amy decided to open the brewery. Prior to opening the brewery the couple embedded themselves in the Austin beer community by putting on the Texas Craft Brewers Festival in 2004 and 2005. Since opening, Independence has created a local niche for themselves by packaging the OU Suks bottles every fall for the UT vs. OU game, supplying the Alamo Drafthouse house beer from 2004-2009, and hosting the largest monthly beer gathering at their first Saturday tasting and tours. They have been releasing one-off beers in their Brewluminati series. For latest info on this series stay tuned here www.independencebrewing.com/our-beers/brewluminat

Born a simple family owned convenience store on the side of I-35, Whip In was not content to live its days out that way. After becoming one of the top bottle shops in Austin, they slowly crept tap by delicious tap to becoming one of the largest draft and Texas-brewed beer selections in town. And now, they are home to Kamala Brewing.

In early 2010, Scott Hovey was ripe for a mid-life career change and when he looked for inspiration, he found it in the eclectic and exciting life of his deceased older brother, Adelbert. Adelbert’s is a tribute to George Adelbert Hovey (1953-2000), Scott’s brother. Always a fan of Belgian style ales, Scott was introduced to the complexities and flavor possibilities in bottle conditioned aged Belgian beers at the 2010 Craft Brewers Conference. He returned and set out to start Austin’s first all Belgian style bottle and keg conditioned brewery, aptly named after his older brother. Of the six beers to be released in 2012, each one is named after an experience or story that his brother Adelbert loved to tell. Look for more barrel-aged ales to come out in 2013.

WE RECOMMEND Black Thunder, Heavy Machinery, Sputnik

Austin Beerworks is a collection of four friends spanning from the East coast to Austin, united and “hell-bent on excellence” in beer making. The beerworkers, Michael, Will, Adam, and Mike, have raised an impressive production brewery and cannery in the northwest sector of town since April 2011. With their regular lineup of four beers—including 2011 GABF silver medal winner Peacemaker Extra Pale—the four friends have come storming out of the gates and onto the Austin beer scene. The Austin Beerworks fellows aim to make supertasty, yet drinkable beers, perfect for our refined, often heat-parched Austin palates. Their new IPA series Heavy Machinery can now be found in tallboy cans, but only in Austin.

Ben Sabel and Jud Mulherin were childhood friends in Tennessee. As youngsters they shared a dream to open a “shop.” Like many young friends, as they grew up, their lives took different paths, but they never lost touch. And they never forgot their dream. As adults they both loved beer, so it was inevitable that their dream would morph into becoming brewery owners. Circle Brewing appeared on the internet beer rumor mill in the second half of 2008. Fast forward two years, Ben and Jud were brewing their first batches of beer for Austin. Envy Amber and Blur Texas Hefe were their first beers to be released. They followed those with their Nightlight Dry Irish Stout. Circle brews their beer following the Reinheitsgebot, the German purity law from 1516. Their basic philosophy to make beer “with only the best ingredients and NONE of the other stuff.” If you can find Smokin’ Beech on tap somewhere, get it while you can.

It was anything but. They have since transitioned this beer, along with their original lineup, to farmhouse versions (Farmhouse Wytchmaker, Farmhouse Black Metal, etc.), followed by a very popular series of sour barrel-aged creations (Buddha’s Brew, Funk Metal, Das Überkind, RU-55, and Ol’ Oi), and most recently ventured into sour beer and fermented fruit blends starting with the raspberry Atrial Rubicite and the current strawberry Omniscience & Proselytism. In mid-2012, they shifted their packaging efforts to focus mainly on bottles with just a few naturally carbonated kegs and gravity casks available for bars. Their tasting room at the brewery (see hours above) is most often the best place to find and grab their latest beers.

One of the longer running breweries in central Texas, Real Ale has been in operation since 1996. The brewery originally operated out of a basement of an antique shop in Blanco (50 minutes outside Austin). In 1998, current owner Brad Farbstein took over. Maxed out at 5,500 barrels a year, Real Ale moved just outside the downtown area in 2006 to a new facility that allowed them to produce 10-12 times that amount. In 2009 they started bottling their seasonal beers. In 2010, they began turning out a series of experimental Mysterium Verum (Real Mystery) beers, including seasonals aged in oak barrels or entirely new brews. They recently celebrated their 17th anniversary with the release of a Belgian strong ale weighing in at a hefty 13%. This year they’ve also been rolling out their new Brewers’ Cut small batch series. Up next in the series a Double IPA. Seek them out.

Founders Forrest and Diane Rogness, along with Dan Wheeler, have been pumping out beers in Pflugerville ever since this project was kickstarted in 2012. And they do it without too much concern over style guidelines or popular “safe bet” beers. With the ethos of a homebrewer, Rogness aims to change it up—and keep it interesting—while delivering high quality brewed beers. You can find year-round and seasonal beers on draft or in 22 ounce bottles around town, but if you swing by their tours you’ll get to see that homebrew mentality in action and try out the latest small batch concoctions they’re testing.

Everyone remembers when they first really started falling in love with beer. For Brian Smittle it was while he was living in England studying British politics and experiencing true “real ale.” Following college graduation, Brian made the move to Colorado where he took his affection for beer one step further and volunteered at the Hubcap brewery in Vail at night, while operating ski lifts during the day. He soon became a paid employee and full-time brewer (a.k.a. “living the dream”). Through his work there, he met some college students who offered him an ownership piece of a brew pub in Oklahoma. They opened in 1993 and grew to include a brewery and four satellite stores. After his success in the brewing/restaurant industry he decided to escape the restaurant side of things and open a full production brewery in Austin, TX. On his 40th birthday, he poured the slab for the location that would become Thirsty Planet Brewing Co.

Since our first issue in April 2011, Austin’s beer scene has changed (it seems to change and grow each month). One of those changes Twisted X. It was started by Jim Sampson and Shane Bordeau in Cedar Park (though their new brewery in Dripping Springs will be open any day now). They held their initial release party on Cinco de Mayo, where they introduced beer fans to the Fuego Jalapeño Infused Tex Mex Pilsner, Twisted X Premium Tex Mex Lager and then unnamed Premium Tex Mex Dark Lager. The dark lager has now been blessed with the moniker Cow Creek. Also be on the look out for Siesta, a prickly pear lager. It is a summer seasonal that proved to be quite popular and could still pop up around town. With a Tex-Mex theme they are bound to quench the thirsts of a large swath of Austin beer drinkers. Austinites love Tex-Mex. Austinites love beer. Tex-Mex beer? Forget about it, a match made in heaven. Could a pico-degallo beer be in the works? Let’s hope so. Mole Porter—that’s the ticket!

Barber Shop is another testament to the iron will of homebrewers. With an emphasis on the “bar” in Barber Shop, they left the historical building’s name the same, while sprucing up the inside with a lush wood bar, rustic amenities and a strategically occupied tap wall. Brewer John McIntosh intends to focus on English pub ales.

About an hour west of Austin and picturesquely located on the banks of the Colorado River near charming downtown, Bastrop Brewhouse provide classic American craft styles and comfort food to compliment the riverside atmosphere. Like summer camp with beers! They brew a solid lineup of house beers and keep a decent selection of rotating local taps.

Double Horn, the first and only brew pub in Burnet County, is seated right off 281 in Marble Falls. Frustrated by the lack of quality beer, food, and atmosphere to enjoy it in, owner Dusty Knight opened Double Horn last May. Knight and head brewer Eric Casey have made it their mission to supply residents with quality house beers and local craft brews.

The owners, the Middletons, hail from the sunny state of California. They brought with them, like many other West Coast brewers, a love for the HOP. In addition to hoppy monsters, they specialize in subtle Belgian-style ales.
