Γυμναστική: Βάλσαμο του Νου
The Beneficial Effects of Exercising
Κάποιοι υποστηρίζουν πως τις πιο ώριμες σκέψεις σου τις κάνεις όταν οξυγονώνεται ο εγκέφαλος και δη όταν γυμνάζεσαι! Είπα λοιπόν και εγώ να επιδοθώ στο …σπορ με βλέψεις στην αύξηση του οξυγόνου αλλά και όλα τα καλά δεινά της εξάσκησης. Γυμναστήριο Synergy ώρα 6:30 το πρωί. Το μισό σώμα ακόμα στο όνειρο, ενώ το άλλο μισό προσπαθεί να κρατήσει τα προσχήματα! Φορτώνομαι στο αεροποδήλατο και βάζω πλώρη για … την οθόνη μπροστά μου με ειδήσεις και διαφημίσεις –ακόμα δεν έχω καταλήξει πιο από τα δύο είναι πιο αποχαυνωτικό – ενώ παράλληλα ρίχνω κλεφτές ματιές στους δίπλα μου να μαντέψω πόσο άνετα εκτελούν τις δικές τους ασκήσεις. Η ώρα περνά, το ίδιο και οι ειδήσεις η μία μετά την άλλη, αλλάζουν μόνο εικόνες και ήχους σε μια μουντή καθημερινότητα που τα πάντα ποκωδικοποιούνται, και με χάρη άγαρμπης μπαλαρίνας βουτάν στο ίδιο καζάνι, φόνοι και σκάνδαλα, δεξιώσεις και δηλώσεις, διαγγέλματα και παραγγέλματα, πλημμύρες και τυφώνες, δίκαια κι άδικα, πόλεμοι και … πόλεμοι όλα βουβά περνούν από μπροστά μου στο ακίνητο ταξίδι μου στο πουθενά, με μόνη διακοπή αυτή των διαφημιστικών σποτ και πάλι απ την αρχή. Ιδρώνω και πάντα το αποδίδω στη γυμναστική – ανεβαίνουν οι σφυγμοί μου και εναντιώνομαι – μάλλον φταίει η ώρα – θυμώνω και αντιμιλώ σ αυτά που βλέπω – θα φταίει το μηχάνημα – Κάνω να φύγω πιο γρήγορα με το αεικίνητο ποδήλατο αλλά δεν πάω πουθενά , η μαγική οθόνη του Μεγάλου Αδελφού μπροστάρης μου για να με συντροφεύει. Κλείνω σφιχτά τα μάτια μου και χάνομαι… μάλλον αρχίζει να δουλεύει η οξυγόνωση. Το άλλο μου μισό παραδίδεται από την προσπάθεια του και παρασύρεται στο όνειρο.. εκεί που όλα είναι φωτεινά και γαλάζια, με ένα τεράστιο χαμόγελο να αγκαλιάζει την γή Καλό καλοκαίρι και μη ξεχνάτε την… οξυγόνωση
Few people do believe that the most productive thoughts come to you when enough oxygen reaches your brain, especially when you exercise, in a gym or outdoors. So under this for consideration I thought it will be a good idea to live the effects – or the after-effects – first hand starting exercising. …SYNERGY Gym, 6:30 am. With my one half –I don’t really remember which one to tell you the truth – still sleeping and dreaming while the other half is trying to keep up face… I climb the aero bike and start pedaling to oblivion with the color screen in front me feeding me advertisement and news of the hour still haven’t decided yet which of the two is more deadly for my brain… while I sneak a peak at the people exercising next to me to see how they manage with their routines. Time passes by, same with the news, one after the other, only the images and the sounds are different, in a grey everyday boring routine where everything is decoded and with the prestige and gusto of a two left feet ballerina dive in the same pit, murders, scandals, gatherings, galas, events, politicians who promise, politicians who curse, floodings and tsunamis, wars, wars and more deadly wars passing in front of me towards my standing-still trip to nowhere. The only thing that breaks the eternal monotony the replay of the same ads on my little screen. Now I’m sweating and always I charge this to my rigorous rhythms of exercise – or not? – my pulse hits 400 – maybe it’s the hour to be blame – I get angry and talk back to everything I watch – to no avail – maybe it’s a machine’s fault. I’m trying to escape from the images that haunt me, but the bike is stationery, does not move, the Big Brother screen is glued in front of me, following my every movement. I close my eyes and start to get lost in a dream reality… maybe it’s the oxygen in my body that gets the revenge. My other half surrenders to the dream were everything is Light and blue with a huge smile overlooking our planet. Have a nice summer and don’t forget to get plenty of oxygen!!!

ΤΟ ΦΕΤΙΝΟ 23ο ΣΥΝΕΔΡΙΟ της Παγκόσμιας Συντονιστικής Επιτροπής Κυπριακού Αγώνα (ΠΣΕΚΑ), του UHAC και της Συντονισμένης Προσπάθειας Ελλήνων στην Ουάσιγκτον θα πέρναγε στην Ιστορία ως μια υποτονική συνάθροιση ομογενών παραγόντων, αν δεν είχε μια αξιοσημείωτη ιδιαιτερότητα: οι γερουσιαστές Χίλαρι Κλίντον, Μπαράκ Ομπάμα και Τζο Μπάιντεν, υποψήφιοι των Δημοκρατικών για τις προεδρικές εκλογές του 2008, παρουσιάστηκαν για πρώτη φορά ενώπιον των Ελληνοαμερικανών συνέδρων σε μια προσπάθεια να εκθέσουν τις απόψεις τους για την εξωτερική πολιτική των ΗΠΑ και κατ’ επέκταση να αναζητήσουν χρηματοδότηση για τις καμπάνιες τους στις ΗΠΑ. ΟΙ ΤΡΕΙΣ ΥΠΟΨΗΦΙΟΙ δεν ήταν καθόλου φειδωλοί για την Ελλάδα, αφού σε ομιλίες-καρμπόν αποθέωσαν «τις ελληνικές αρχές και ιδανικά», ενώ δεν παρέλειψαν να μοιράσουν -ένεκα βέβαια και της προεκλογικής περιόδου- αόριστες και γενικόλογες υποσχέσεις προς τους ομογενείς για μια διαφορετική πολιτική στο Κυπριακό και σε ό,τι αφορά την αντιμετώπιση των τουρκικών παραβιάσεων των θρησκευτικών ελευθεριών του Οικουμενικού Πατριαρχείου. Και οι τρεις γερουσιαστές άσκησαν εφ’ όλης της ύλης σκληρή κριτική στην εξωτερική πολιτική του Αμερικανού προέδρου Τζορτζ Μπους, χωρίς ωστόσο να περάσουν σε συγκεκριμένες δεσμεύσεις για τα εθνικά μας θέματα. ΠΙΟ ΑΙΧΜΗΡΟΣ παρουσιάστηκε ο γερουσιαστής και πρόεδρος της Επιτροπής Εξωτερικών Υποθέσεων της Γερουσίας, Τζο Μπάιντεν, που ήταν ιδιαίτερα αυστηρός απέναντι στην Τουρκία σε ό,τι αφορά την καταπάτηση των θρησκευτικών ελευθεριών του Πατριαρχείου, ενώ επέκρινε τις αντιδράσεις της γείτονος χώρας στη συμφωνία Κύπρου-ΛιβάνουΑιγύπτου για τα πετρέλαια και τη μη αναγνώριση της Αρμενικής Γενοκτονίας. Από την άλλη, η Χίλαρι Κλίντον (την παρουσία της οποίας εξασφάλισε η οικογένεια Τσακοπούλου, εκ των χρηματοδοτών της) περιορίστηκε σε μια
«επαγγελματική» ομιλία. Η πρώην πρώτη κυρία μοίρασε χαμόγελα και υποσχέθηκε ότι «θα δώσει προσοχή στο Κυπριακό», επικρίνοντας τον πρόεδρο Μπους ότι σταμάτησε τις πρωτοβουλίες και τις προσπάθειες του συζύγου της στο συγκεκριμένο θέμα. Ο ΑΦΡΟΑΜΕΡΙΚΑΝΟΣ υποψήφιος Μπαράκ Ομπάμα δικαιολόγησε εξ αρχής τα υψηλά ποσοστά δημοτικότητάς του στις ΗΠΑ. Χαρισματική προσωπικότητα, τόσο στο λόγο όσο και στην εμφάνιση, καυστικός και επί της ουσίας ( «λύση στο Κυπριακό βασιζόμενη στα ψηφίσματα του ΟΗΕ και στα πρότυπα και της αξίες της Ε.Ε.».), το νέο αστέρι των Δημοκρατικών αναφέρθηκε στην αποφασιστική παρέμβασή του για την εκλογή του 30χρονου ομογενή Αλέξη Γιαννούλια στη θέση του υπουργού Οικονομικών της Πολιτείας του Ιλινόις. Μετά τον Τζο Μπάιντεν και τον Μπομπ Μενέντεζ, η ομογένεια απέκτησε σημαντική πρόσβαση στη Γερουσία εξαιτίας της προσωπικής σχέσης που έχει αναπτύξει με τον νεαρό υπουργό Οικονομικών, αφού δεν πέρασε απαρατήρητη η αναφορά του Μπαράκ Ομπάμα που κάλεσε την ελληνοαμερικανική κοινότητα σε έναν ισχυρό συνεταιρισμό για τα επόμενα χρόνια. Η 19η Μαίου είναι ημέρα οδύνης, μνήμης και χρέους. Την ημέρα αυτή αποδίδουμε φόρο τιμής στα θύματα της απάνθρωπης γενοκτονίας του Ποντιακού Ελληνισμού και στις αλησμόνητες πατρίδες του Πόντου. Η γενοκτονία αυτή αποτελεί μία από τις μεγαλύτερες του 20ού αιώνα καθώς πάνω από 353.000 Έλληνες Πόντιοι εξολοθρεύτηκαν με απεχθείς μεθόδους από τους Τούρκους. Δυστυχώς, όμως, έως και σήμερα οι αδικοχαμένοι πρόγονοί μας δεν έχουν δικαιωθεί στα μάτια της ανθρωπότητας διότι δεν έχει γίνει ακόμη η επίσημη αναγνώριση της θηριώδους αυτής πράξης. Εμείς έχουμε ιστορικό και εθνικό χρέος όχι μόνο να τιμούμε πάντα τη μνήμη τους αλλά έμπρακτα να διεκδικούμε και να αγωνιζόμαστε για τη διεθνή αναγνώριση της γενοκτονίας του Ποντιακού Ελληνισμού. Η ιστορία του Ποντιακού Ελληνισμού αποτελεί σημαντικό τμήμα της ιστορικής διαδρομής των Ελλήνων. Πρέπει, αντί να αφαιρούνται σελίδες από τα ελληνικά σχολικά βιβλία, να προστίθενται. Κι όχι μόνο στα ελληνικά βιβλία. Η απάνθρωπη γενοκτονία των Ποντίων πρέπει να προστεθεί στην ύλη της βιβλιογραφίας που διδάσκεται στα εκπαιδευτικά ιδρύματα διεθνώς. Το ΣΑΕ Αμερικής θα συνεχίσει τις επαφές με τις αρμόδιες αρχές στην προσπάθεια να ενταχθεί η ιστορική αλήθεια της φρικαλεότητας που διεπράχθηκε εναντίον των Ποντίων αδελφών μας στα Αμερικανικά βιβλία ιστορίας. Η απόκρυψη ιστορικών αληθειών και μάλιστα τα τεράστια εγκλήματα εναντίον της ανθρωπότητας όπως η γενοκτονία ενός λαού δεν πρέπει να λησμονούνται ούτε και να αποκρύπτονται. Απεναντίας πρέπει να διδάσκονται, όχι με σκοπό την καλλιέργεια μίσους και εκδίκησης, αλλά για την ολοκληρωμένη γνώση και συνείδηση των λαών, στοιχεία που καθιστούν την ανθρωπότητα καλά πληροφορημένη και προετοιμασμένη για το μέλλον. Η γνώση είναι δύναμη. Η λήθη προπομπός λαθών ενίοτε μοιραίων για τη μοίρα ανθρώπων και λαών.

Maloney, Bilirakis Introduce Bill to Include Greece in Visa Waiver Program WASHINGTON - U.S. Representatives Carolyn Maloney (D-NY) and Gus Bilirakis (R-FL), founders and Co-Chairs of the Congressional Caucus on Hellenic Issues were joined by 29 co-sponsors in introducing legislation (H.R. 2526) that would designate Greece as a program country in the Visa Waiver Program. The Visa Waiver Program permits nationals from certain countries who are traveling to the United States for tourism or business to stay for 90 days or less without obtaining a visa. The Visa Waiver Program currently includes 27 countries. To participate in the program, countries must meet several criteria including reciprocal visa-free travel for U.S. citizens, secure machine-readable biometric passports, and a maximum allowable three percent refusal rate of U.S. non-immigrant visitor visa applications. Greece is the only one of the original 15 European Union nations that does not belong to the Visa Waiver Program. Greece meets the current criteria mandated for entry into the Visa Waiver Program, including the three percent refusal rate. As of
January 1, 2007, Greek passports issued prior to January 1, 2006, are no longer considered valid for travel. Greek nationals are traveling with new, machine-readable passports that are produced using state-of-theart biometric technology to meet the highest possible security standards and specifications. “Greece is a critical U.S. ally,” said Maloney. “I hope the State Department and Department of Homeland Security will move forward to include Greece in the Visa Waiver Program. The legislation that Congressman Bilirakis and I introduced is an important step toward making that happen.” Original cosponsors of H.R. 2526 include Representatives Gus M. «Όταν θέλουν οι Έλληνες να καυχηθούν», γράφει ο Καβάφης, «τέτοιους βγάζει το Έθνος μας, θα λένε».Και είναι, πράγματι, άξιος ο έπαινος αυτός για ανθρώπους που δίδαξαν με το δικό τους τρόπο την προσφορά στην Πατρίδα, τον άνθρωπο, τον Πολιτισμό. Ανθρώπους με υψηλό αίσθημα φιλοπατρίας, φιλανθρωπίας, κοινωνικής αλληλεγγύης. Τιμούμε σήμερα εκείνους που ενίσχυσαν (και μάλιστα σε δύσκολους καιρούς) την Πατρίδα μας με τις δωρεές και τα κληροδοτήματά τους. Είναι, μάλιστα, ο Χώρος αυτός (το Ζάππειο Μέγαρο) ένας από τους πλέον κατάλληλους για μια τέτοια εκδήλωση, αφού κι αυτός αποτελεί προϊόν του εθνικού ευεργετισμού. Προσθέτω ότι είναι το πρώτο κτίριο, σ’ ολόκληρο τον Κόσμο, που ανεγέρθηκε για την εξυπηρέτηση Ολυμπιακών Αναγκών. Κι αυτό δείχνει ότι ένας από τους βασικούς προσανατολισμούς των εθνικών ευεργετών ήταν ο Πολιτισμός. Ο θεσμός των «εθνικών κληροδοτημάτων» εμφανίζεται στην ελληνική αρχαιότητα, συνεχίζεται στην περίοδο του Βυζαντίου και παίρνει νέες διαστάσεις στη διάρκεια της Οθωμανικής Αυτοκρατορίας. Η ανάγκη για πνευματική αναβάθμιση του Γένους ώθησε, τότε, την Εκκλησία, αλλά και
πολλούς εύπορους Έλληνες να δραστηριοποιηθούν για την ίδρυση σχολείων, τη μισθοδοσία εκπαιδευτικών, αλλά και την παροχή οικονομικής αρωγής σ’ εκείνους που είχαν μεγαλύτερη ανάγκη. Έλληνες της διασποράς πρωταγωνιστούν στο κίνημα του Νεοελληνικού Διαφωτισμού, στην ανέγερση σχολείων, την αποστολή βιβλίων, τη χορήγηση υποτροφιών. Η έμπρακτη εκδήλωση
και Σχολεία. Πλούσια και επιφανή μέλη τους θέτουν στις πρώτες προτεραιότητές τους, την Ορθοδοξία, τη Παιδεία και τον Πολιτισμό. Δεν μένουν, όμως, σ’ αυτά. Ιδρύουν ορφανοτροφεία, νοσοκομεία και γηροκομεία. Επιδιώκουν (και καταφέρνουν) να ανυψωθεί το επίπεδο ζωής των μελών της παροικίας, αλλά και να αναπτυχθεί, να κρατηθεί αλώβητος και να αναδειχθεί ο πολιτισμικός χαρακτήρας της κοινότητας.

Η Κλυταιμνήστρα στο “La Mama” To θέατρο της Νέας Υόρκης, La Mama φιλοξένησε από τις 17 Μαϊου το θεατρικό έργο «Τα δάκρυα της Κλυταιμνήστρας» της Αύρας Σιδηροπούλου ενώ τον ρόλο της Κλυταιμνήστρας ερμήνευσε η καταξιωμένη ηθοποιός Θέμις Μπαζάκα. Πρόκειται για ένα έργο που αρχικά γράφτηκε στην αγγλική γλώσσα και κατόπιν μεταφράστηκε στην ελληνική. ¨Ηδη έχει παρουσιαστεί στην Αθήνα και Κωνσταντινούπολη και ερμηνευμένο σε τρείς γλώσσες μέχρι στιγμής (ελληνικά αγγλικά και τουρκικά) Μιλώντας στην Ελλοπία, η Θέμις Μπαζάκα αναφέρθηκε στις ιδιαιτερότητες της παράστασης και συγκεκριμένα στο γεγονός ότι θα χρησιμοποιηθούν υπέρτιτλοι μια και το έργο θα είναι στην ελληνική γλώσσα. λέγοντας χαρακτηριστικά « νομίζω ότι στο θέατρο και ειδικά σε αυτή την παράσταση δεν χρειάζονται υπέρτιτλοι . Το θέατρο από μόνο του έχει κάτι μαγικό που ενώνει ηθοποιούς και κοινό, μια ενέργεια που πλέον δεν χρειάζεται να καταλαβαίνεις αλλά να νοιώθεις.» Με την σειρά της η σκηνοθέτης και συγγραφέας Αύρα Σιδηροπούλου προσθέτει πως η γλώσσα από μόνη της έχει δυναμικότητα, μουσικότητα και ενέργεια. Πολλές φορές μάλιστα - μας λέει - ότι καλείται να παίξει έναν ρόλο που ξεπερνά τα όρια της απλής μετάφρασης. Η Θέμις Μπαζάκα αναφέρθηκε και στην ιδιαιτερότητα του έργου «Τα δάκρυα της Κλυταιμνήστρας» που ακολουθεί μεν τη δομή της ιστορίας της ζωής της Κλυταιμνήστρας, αλλά ιδωμένη με ένα διαφορετικό τρόπο, καθώς στο έργο επιχειρείται και επιτυγχάνεται η διείσδυση στις σκέψεις της ηρωίδας κατά τη διάρκεια βασικών σταθμών της ζωής της «είναι σαν να ακούμε τις σκέψεις της, μπαίνουμε στο μυαλό της και ακούμε το άμεσο ρεαλιστικό παραλήρημα της”.
The Onassis Cultural Center will continue its contemporary art series in the Olympic Tower Atrium with an exhibition of work by photographer Constantine Manos. The photographs in the exhibition are taken from two major projects in Manos’ career, an early black and white essay A Greek Portfolio made in Greece in the early 1960’s and a color essay American Color which commenced in the early 1980’s and continues today. A Greek-American born and raised in South Carolina, Manos traveled to Greece for the first time in 1961 as a young photographer eager to explore the culture he knew only through his parents’ stories about life in the village (chorio). The resulting photographs were first published in 1972 in A Greek Portfolio. The images depict slices of the day-to-day life in isolated villages scattered over the Greek countryside. Manos won awards for the book at Arles and the Leipzig Book Fair. A new
edition of A Greek Portfolio was published in 1999, accompanied by a major exhibition of the work at the Benaki Museum in Athens. Photographs from Manos’ American Color project were first published in book form in 1995. He is currently working on a new edition of the book, American Color 2, which will include a large number of new and unpublished images - many of which are included in the current exhibition. Constantine Manos was born in Columbia, South Carolina, of Greek immigrant parents, and received a B.A. in English Literature from the University of South Carolina. His photographic career began in his school camera club at the age of thirteen, and at age nineteen he was hired as the official photographer of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. Manos’ work is included in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, the Houston Museum of Fine Arts, the Bibliothèque Nationale in Paris, the High Museum of Art in Atlanta, and many others. In 2003 he won the Leica Medal of Excellence from a world-wide entry list of 250 photographers. Manos is a member of Magnum Photos, which is currently celebrating 60 years as an independent photographic cooperative. Timed to correspond with this seminal anniversary, the Magnum 60th Festival is presenting various exhibitions and events which will celebrate the photographs and history of the agency.

Iraqi leaders make it clear: They want U.S. troops out By MARTIN SCHRAM A majority of the nation’s lawmakers have now taken a firm stand. They signed onto legislation to set a timetable for withdrawing U.S. troops from Iraq. And, despite President Bush’s ongoing surge, freezing U.S. troops at current levels. The legislation also declares there can be no extension of the U.N. mandate for international troops in Iraq, which expires at the end of 2007, without the approval of Iraq’s parliament. But Bush cannot make it go away by vetoing it as he has other U.S. congressional troop-withdrawal measures. Because this bill was drafted in the Iraqi Parliament. By last week, a majority of Iraq’s lawmakers had signed their names to it. Don’t be hard on yourself if you
critics in Congress,” was the second sentence in the Post’s report. The New York Times also noted that Iraq’s lawmakers have demanded a withdrawal schedule despite the prime minister’s objections -- much like the U.S. congressional Democrats have done despite the president’s objections. never saw this front-page news. For it first appeared in The Washington Post on May 11, back on page A12. The New York Times caught up a day later, playing the story, headlined “Majority of Iraq Lawmakers Seek Timetable for U.S. Exit,” on page A6. Like all news in all capitals, the significance of this development can be spun more than one way. “The development was a sign of a growing division between Iraq’s legislators and prime minister that mirrors the widening gulf between the Bush administration and its
action (which should not automatically be confused with democracy inaction, even though it often turns out that way). The untidiness stems from the basic rule that democracy basically means that the majority rules -- but hopefully cannot dictate. Iraq, a nation with a Shiite majority, has a parliament with a Shiite majority. And it is no surprise that Shiites comprise most of those who have signed the draft bill (which the Times, being a day late, calls a “petition”). But Sunnis have signed the draft bill, too, as has at least one Kurd. Pg 17

AS YOU KNOW-or did you?-six of the seven Ancient Wonders of the World have are just history. There’s no more Lighthouse of Alexandria, which crumbled into the sea after an earthquake or Statue of Zeus which was destroyed by fire thousands of years ago. Only the Pyramids of Giza in Egypt remain on the list. But lo and behold, there may be a way to recreate these sites, as well as populate them! Virtual heritage technology aims to recreate a threedimensional traversable world and to provide something tangible: A sense of “looking and feeling”. ‘Seeing is believing,’ says Dimitris Efraimoglou, managing director of the Foundation of the Hellenic World in Athens. “If a picture is worth a thousand words, imagine what a moving picture you can control is worth?’ Well, he ought to know what he’s talking about, for his organization is already showcasing a virtual ancient Agora, the ruins of which are a just a skip and hop from this multimedia museum. Set in a dome-shaped virtual reality theater, visitors watch the show unfold through a pair of special stereoscopic glasses that create depth and interact with the program through a personal keyboard, joystick and display screen. In September, this same Foundation will launch, ‘Athena in the Classical Agora’, which charts the ascendance of Athens with the audience l watching the city rise up from the ashes after the Persian War, and see the construction of new shops and theaters. Visitors will move not only between sites but also centuries. Children particularly get involved in history and Dr.Nadia Magnenat-Thalmann, Director of MIRALab at the University of Geneva aims to take virtual heritage one step further. Instead of visiting a particular museum to see an ancient wonder unfold before your eyes, the professor of computer science wants to be able to travel through time and space anywhere in the world…. A PROPOS, much closer than Athens and as far as New York City, the Children’s Museum
of Manhattan at 212 West 83rd Street (Tisch Bldg) offers something perhaps compatible with this idea through August. Under the title Gods, Myths and Mortals: Discover Ancient Greece are offering the opportunity for children and adults alike to interact and get as close as they can to the glamour and glory of the legacy our forefathers have bequeath to the world. An international panel of scholars and scientists has teamed up with the very erudite staff of the Museum to present a working model of the Antikythera Mechanism, described as the world’s earliest known computer. It also offers a glimpse at the “Odyssey experience” which takes children on a journey to the distant past, allowing them to climb aboard a 13-ft Trojan Horse, get as close as possible to a Cyclops cave complete with the blinded one-eyed monster’s sheep and even a Siren’s Cove. At the adjacent gymnasium setting, young and old can test their athletic prowess in arm wrestling and leg strength, and alongside computer programs which reconstruct the Temple to Zeus, much like the exhibit in Athens that reconstructs ancient Agora. This 4,000 sq ft hands-on exhibit is one no one should miss whether they’re ten or one hundred years old. Karen Snider, the Museum’s Deputy Director on Exhibitions with whom I discussed the project, tells me that soon enough, maybe in two weeks, the exhibit will feature a Latin-Greek translation of the ancient god’s names, so visitors can relate to the Latin names of the Greek deities, such as Aphrodite-Venus, Artemis-Diana and so on. This is a project thought out and worked out over the past few years, with many universities on both sides of the Atlantic taking part. The exhibition is lauded (aside from yours truly) and supported by the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Stavros Niarchos Foundation, the John Calamos Foundation the City of New York the Hellenic Ministry of Culture the History Channel and many academic advisors. Believe me when I tell you, there hasn’t been anything to match this exhibit here in the past and I have not seen such enthusiasm as the one demonstrated by the Museum’s staff. So take your youngsters and let them learn all that there is to learn. With that said, let’s start with a lesson you’ll encounter when there: Who is the god who was born out of Zeus’ leg and who is particularly celebrated for his association with the wine?..... AN EXHIBITION dedicated to French playwright, poet and painter Jean Cocteau that is

entitled “Jean Cocteau and Greece” opened late May at the Benaki Museum on Piraeus Street. The exhibition, sponsored by the Focus on Hope-Nana Mouskouri Foundation and Emboriki Bank, showcases sketches, paintings, ceramics and jewelry by the late French artist. French actor Jean-Claude Brialy and Carole Weisweiller, both Cocteau friends, and the French Embassy are the main coordinators of the exhibition, which will run until the end of July. Referring to Cocteau’s work, Brialy said during a press conference that “this so-called acrobat of poetry suffered because his work remained unknown while he was alive.” Nana Mouskouri, on her part, underlined Cocteau’s love for Greece, saying that the artist’s “home interior was painted by himself personally, with subjects taken from Greek mythology.” Greek police fired paintball pellets with different colors to identify rioting fans during the mid-May Champions League final between Liverpool and AC Milan, police spokesman Panagiotis Stathis told Reuters. The Italians were the champs as you well know, but very few pellets were fired during the final in Athens. This was the first time such weapons was used by Greek security force..…… A SERIES OF ARSON ATTACKS targeting banks were reported May and early June , while the local offices of the ruling New Democracy party were torched in Alimos. The Emboriki Bank in Kessariani was seriously damaged by three bombs, while another Emboriki branch and the Bank of Cyprus in Neo Iraklio were the targets of two makeshift incendiary devices. Another incendiary device made up of four propane gas canisters damaged two ATM machines of the National Bank of Greece in Patisia, while an Alpha Bank in Kypseli was also firebombed. An overnight firebomb attack on the local offices of the ruling New Democracy party in Alimos caused material damages. Wait a minute! Are we describing Athens or some Iraqi outpost?…. CLOSER HOME, a Drexel University graduate student was seriously injured Saturday morning after a fire swept through off-campus housing in West Philadelphia. Firefighters rushed the 26-year-old victim to the hospital after flames forced him to jump from an upperfloor window….. Looks like Olympic Airways is getting some additional competition in scheduled flights to and from Athens. Continental Airlines began daily direct flights between Athens and New Jersey which started June 8. DID YOU KWOW that the largest Greek flag in the world is flying at the community of Kerion, the island of Zakynthos? Just imagine that a special ceremony was held late in May to discover exactly how big the flag is. And why? Because it is expected that is registered in the Guinness Book of Records. The flag which measures almost 668 square meters and is hoisted on a 50 meters-high poll permanently is the brainchild of architect Stamatis Liveris, who lives and works on the island….

Και οι τρεις γερουσιαστές άσκησαν εφ’ όλης της ύλης σκληρή κριτική στην εξωτερική πολιτική του Αμερικανού προέδρου Τζορτζ Μπους, χωρίς ωστόσο να περάσουν σε συγκεκριμένες δεσμεύσεις για τα εθνικά μας θέματα. ΠΙΟ ΑΙΧΜΗΡΟΣ παρουσιάστηκε ο γερουσιαστής και πρόεδρος της Επιτροπής Εξωτερικών Υποθέσεων της Γερουσίας, Τζο Μπάιντεν, που ήταν ιδιαίτερα αυστηρός απέναντι στην Τουρκία σε ό,τι αφορά την καταπάτηση των θρησκευτικών ελευθεριών του Πατριαρχείου, ενώ επέκρινε τις αντιδράσεις της γείτονος χώρας στη συμφωνία Κύπρου-ΛιβάνουΑιγύπτου για τα πετρέλαια και τη μη αναγνώριση της Αρμενικής Γενοκτονίας. Από την άλλη, η Χίλαρι Κλίντον (την παρουσία της οποίας εξασφάλισε

Χαρισματική προσωπικότητα, τόσο στο λόγο όσο και στην εμφάνιση, καυστικός και επί της ουσίας ( «λύση στο Κυπριακό βασιζόμενη στα ψηφίσματα του ΟΗΕ και στα πρότυπα και της αξίες της Ε.Ε.».), το νέο αστέρι των Δημοκρατικών αναφέρθηκε στην αποφασιστική παρέμβασή του για την εκλογή του 30χρονου ομογενή Αλέξη Γιαννούλια στη θέση του υπουργού Οικονομικών της Πολιτείας του Ιλινόις. Μετά τον Τζο Μπάιντεν και τον Μπομπ Μενέντεζ, η ομογένεια απέκτησε σημαντική πρόσβαση στη Γερουσία εξαιτίας της προσωπικής σχέσης που έχει αναπτύξει με τον νεαρό υπουργό Οικονομικών, αφού δεν πέρασε απαρατήρητη η αναφορά του Μπαράκ Ομπάμα που κάλεσε την ελληνοαμερικανική κοινότητα σε έναν ισχυρό συνεταιρισμό για τα επόμενα χρόνια.

Columnist David Ignatius reported from Baghdad about meetings the new head of the U.S. Central Command, Adm. William Fallon, had with Shiite and Sunni leaders. Shiite cleric Abdul Aziz al-Hakim, who has his own militia, told Fallon “the real problem in Iraq is the Sunnis.” He rejected the admiral’s call for them to make concessions, insisting that sharing oil revenue and easing de-Bathification
efforts won’t cause Sunnis to stop their insurgency. Then, separately, the Sunni leader Tariq al-Hashimi presented a list of concessions the government must first make, insisting “the man in the driver’s seat is the prime minister.” Ignatius then asked: “So what can U.S. military commanders do to break the sectarian deadlock?” Because, as Fallon concluded, the real solution must be political and not military, perhaps the real question is: Why are our military commanders being sent to spearhead a mission that is non-military, which must be a political assault? There is only one chance for a solution: Bush must take command. Personally and directly, he must spearhead one last effort to forge a political peace. Through the sheer force of his persona, will, desperation and determination -- fortified by his limited arsenal of gray cells within his post-bellum cerebellum -- he must quit sending ignorable emissaries and do the one thing he has never done. Heavy metal band Phoenix Reign rose out of the ashes just like their mythological namesake. In their case however, it was the ashes of struggle in the highly competitive New York music scene normally indifferent to metal. Originally simply called Phoenix, the band came into existence in Greece in the summer of 1998 with founding members Billy Chrissochos and Chris Pollatos. Billy came from an artistic background, doing everything from drawing to playing guitar. He also had a background in radio and in film. Chris, while playing the bass, also played the piano proficiently. Their vision was to bring to the stage a mix of styles – metal, classical, Mediterranean and old school hard rock. They were fans of bands like Iron Maiden, the Scorpi-
ons, Megadeth, AC/DC, Iced Earth and traditional Greek ethnic music. They wanted to meld it together and realized it would take a lot of work, but they knew it could be done. First they needed another axeman. They found the perfect band mate in guitarist Kostas Psarros. He grew up playing the bouzouki, a classical Greek instrument. He would definitely help bring in the fast paced Mediterranean element. Kosta even played with internationally renowned Greek singer, George Dalaras at the Metropolitan Opera House at Lincoln Center in 2003. When the four enlisted Wayne Noon for drums, they found an extremely versatile and heavy player with years of experience under his belt. Phoenix soon recorded

their first demo and were off to the club circuit. They hit L’amour, opening for George Lynch’s (ex-Dokken) Lynch Mob, and then went on to play the then-kings of underground clubs Voodoo Lounge and Castle Heights with other New York metal acts like Zandelle and Gothic Knights. After parting ways with their original singer, they held exhaustive tryouts and eventually found their voice in friend and fan Theresa Gaffney in 2002. Another musically trained performer in several instruments and singing, she bought to the mix an excitement reminiscent of traditional front men and women of rock. It was only up and onwards from here.

Συνέλαβαν μουσουλμάνους της Καραϊβικής που κατά το FBI, σχεδίαζαν επίθεση στο JFK Του ΘΑΝΑΣΗ ΤΣΙΤΣΑ
Τρομοκρατική επιχείρηση εναντίον πετρελαϊκών εγκαταστάσεων του αεροδρομίου «JFK» από χαρακτηριζόμενους ως «αποφασισμένους Μουσουλμάνους εξτρεμιστές», προερχόμενους από χώρες της Καραϊβικής, ισχυρίζονται ότι απέτρεψαν οι αμερικανικές αρχές. Τρία άτομα συνελήφθησαν και ένα καταζητείται ύστερα από ανακοίνωση των Αρχών ότι σχεδίαζαν να ανατινάξουν τον αγωγό καυσίμων μήκους 40 μιλίων που τροφοδοτεί (διέρχεται από κατοικημένες περιοχές από το Νιου Τζέρσι μέχρι το Κουίνς) το διεθνές αεροδρόμιο . Ανάμεσα στους συλληφθέντες βρίσκεται ένας Αμερικανός πολίτης γεννηθείς στη Γουιάνα, πρώην εργαζόμενος στο αεροδρόμιο «JFK» (αρχικά του δολοφονηθέντος προέδρου Κένεντι) και ένα πρώην μέλος του Κοινοβουλίου της Γουιάνα. Ο πρώτος συνελήφθη στη Νέα Υόρκη, ενώ οι άλλοι δύο ύποπτοι τέθηκαν υπό κράτηση στο Τρινιντάντ της Καραΐβικής, όπου αναζητείται ο τέταρτος ύποπτος και ο οποίος φέρεται ως ο εγκέφαλος της επιχείρησης. Τα σχέδια των υπόπτων -που δεν συμπεριελάμβαναν επιβατικά αεροπλάνα ή τερματικούς σταθμούς- ήταν στη φάση του σχεδιασμού («δεν είχαν χρήματα, δεν είχαν βόμβες, αλλά αν το αφήναμε θα είχαν βρει τον τρόπο», δήλωσαν αξιωματούχοι του FBI) και αν είχαν υλοποιηθεί, σύμφωνα με την εισαγγελέα Ρόσλιν Μάουσκοφ, θα ήταν «μία από τις ανατριχιαστικές συνωμοσίες που μπορεί να φανταστεί κανείς. Είναι αδιανόητη η καταστροφή που θα προκαλούσε η υλοποίηση ενός τέτοιου σχεδίου. Η όλη υπόθεση αποκαλύφθηκε όταν οι συλληφθέντες επιχείρησαν να στρατολογήσουν έναν πληροφοριοδότη του FBI. Οι αστυνομικές Αρχές έχουν καταγράψει ηχογραφημένες συνομιλίες στις οποίες οι κατηγορούμενοι παραλληλίζουν τη σχεδιαζόμενη επιχείρηση με εκείνη της 11ης Σεπτεμβρίου. «Αν κτυπήσουμε το «JFK» ( 45 εκατ. επιβάτες τον χρόνο και 1.000 πτήσεις την ημέρα) θα είναι ό,τι πιο επιζήμιο για τις ΗΠΑ. Ολη η χώρα θα πενθεί. Είναι σαν να τον σκοτώνεις (σ.σ.: τον Τζον Κένεντι) δύο φορές», καταγράφεται σχετικά σε μία από τις συνομιλίες. Η επιχείρηση, σύμφωνα με τις Αρχές, άρχισε να σχεδιάζεται από τον Ιανουάριο του 2006 και οι συλληφθέντες θεωρείται ότι έχουν έρθει σε επαφή με διεθνές δίκτυο μουσουλμάνων εξτρεμιστών από τις ΗΠΑ, τη Γουιάνα και το Τρίνινταντ. Μέχρι στιγμής δεν υπάρχουν στοιχεία ότι ύποπτοι έχουν σχέση με την Αλ Κάιντα και αν αποδειχθεί ότι πρόκειται για εσωτερικούς τρομοκρατικούς πυρήνες θα πρόκειται για τρίτο περιστατικό μέσα σε έναν χρόνο στις ΗΠΑ, αφού πέρσι στο Σικάγο είχαν συλληφθεί 7 άτομα που σκόπευαν να τοποθετήσουν εκρηκτικά στον ουρανοξύστη Sears και πριν από έναν μήνα συνελήφθησαν από το FBI άλλα 6 άτομα που σχεδίαζαν να επιτεθούν σε στρατιωτική βάση στο Νιου Τζέρσι.
OVER 80 per cent of Cypriots support smoke-free offices and other indoor workplaces, 65 per cent support a total ban in restaurants, but only 49 per cent support smoke-free bars and pubs. An overwhelming majority of 88 per cent of EU citizens support a smoking ban in offices, indoor workplaces and any indoor public, with 55 per cent totally in favour of a ban in restaurants. Support for a ban in bars and pubs is slightly less evident, with an average of 62 per cent favouring such a ban. On average, 90 per cent of European citizens believe that smoke-free laws exist, while 54 per cent believe that these laws are respected. However, 36 per cent believe that smokers do not respect these laws. In Cyprus, only 24 per cent said they thought the laws were respected. “I am heartened that public support for smoke-free work and public places in Europe remains so high. This can only strengthen the momentum towards making European public and work places smoke-free by 2009,” said EU Health Commissioner Markos Kyprianou. The barometer show that 10 per cent of Cypriot smokers puff on more than 40 cigarettes a day, the second highest in the EU after Greece, where 12 per cent are on more than 40 a day. The majority of smokers in Cyprus smoke between 20 and 25 cigarettes a day. However, in terms of actual numbers who smoke, Cyprus ranks in the middle, with 31 per cent confessing to being smokers. Greece has the highest percentage of smokers with 42 per cent, while Sweden has the lowest number at 18 per cent. Among Cypriots, 56 per cent said they had never smoked and 12 per cent said they had given up and 38 per cent said they had tried giving up in the last year. Nearly two third of Cypriot smokers say they have never tried to give up because they like smoking. The survey, to mark no smoking day on May 31, also found that Cypriots who gave up were the mostly likely to start again, with 53 per cent citing an inability to cope with the cravings, and 23 per cent worried about gaining weight. In the EU, 47 per cent said they had never smoked, 21 per cent said they used to smoke and 32 per cent are current smokers. The figure taken in December 2006 is slightly up from 2005, when the number of smokers in the EU was only 31 per cent. “On average, compared with 2005, regular tobacco consumption has increased by one point in the Member States,” said the report. It said the country where the frequency of smoking declined most during 2006 was Italy, which dropped six per cent coinciding with a public smoking ban, while in Poland it increased most by eight per cent. The highest increase in smoking was registered in Bulgaria, which rose 11 per cent. Portugal has remained the country with the highest number of people who have never smoked, 64 per cent. On average, the number of people who have stopped smoking has remained the same at 21 per cent between the autumn 2005 and the autumn 2006 survey. An analysis of the socio-demographic variables reveals that the proportion of men who stopped smoking stands at 25 per cent compared to 18 per cent among women. The barometer also found that smokers do have a certain level of consideration for non-smokers, children and pregnant women and especially the latter. Only five per cent of European smokers would smoke in a car in the company of pregnant women.

PONTOS The Hellenic Genoside
[2][3][4] is a controversial term used to refer to the fate of Pontic Greeks during and in the aftermath of World War I. Other terms used are Pontic tragedy,[5] Pontic annihilation,[6] and the Turkish atrocities in Pontos and Asia Minor.[7] These terms are used to refer to the persecutions, massacres, expulsions, and death marches of Pontian Greek populations in the historical region of Pontus, the southeastern Black Sea provinces of the Ottoman Empire, during the early 20th century by the Young Turk administration. It has been argued that killings continued during the Turkish national movement led by Mustafa Kemal Atatürk[8][9][10] which was organized to fight against the Greek invasion of western Anatolia.[11]

The official recognition of the events is limited, and whether these incidents constitute a genocide is under debate between Greece and Turkey. A Turkish Foreign Minister maintains, however, that by calling these acts “genocide”, the Greek government “sustains the traditional Greek policy of distorting history...”[12]

The Hellenic Genocide was the systematic torture, massacre and ethnic cleansing of several millions Hellenes (Greeks) perpetrated by the Turks in Asia Minor, Constantinople (called Istanbul by the Turks), Eastern Thrace, Imvros, Tenedos, Macedonia, Cappadocia and Pontos between the beginning of the 1890’s and the end of the 1950’s. Millions of children, men and women were tortured and massacred or expelled from their homes only for being Hellenes. In the same places and often at the same time, were also massacred millions of Armenians and Assyrians. The only “sin” of those millions of persons was to live where their ancestors had lived for thousands of years before the Turkish invasions. The Turkish rulers carried out with unimaginable cruelty their plan to create a “Turkey for the Turks.”

PONTOS A number of Pontians wrote about their experiences and recorded in memoirs or simple testimonies the nightmarish events that they had lived through. The most famous of these was Elias Venezis with his book entitled: “The Number 31328,” which chronicled his servitude in a Labor Battalion . One eyewitness who survived the genocide and settled in Greece was Savas Kantartzis. The following is his vivid description of the massacre of the inhabitants of his native village of Beyeilan in the region of Kotyron in Pontus, by a paramilitary unit led by Topal Osman, now honored as a national hero of modern Turkey. The tragedy of this village is the tragedy of hundreds of other Greek villages and thousands of Greeks, in Chios in 1821, in Pontus in 1916, in Asia Minor in 1922, in Constantinople in 1955 or in occupied Cyprus in 1974... “At daybreak, on Wednesday, the 16th of February, 1922, a nightmare begins. News spread that Tsets (Kurdish irregulars) lead by Topal Osman are coming to our village. Everyone is frightened and apprehensive. Some men hurriedly escaped into the surrounding forest, others hid in special hiding places in their homes or stables, all well camouflaged. Women, children and the elderly locked themselves in their homes, hearts pounding and awaiting their fates. More than 150 Tsets, entered the village yelling and shooting. followed by villagers bent on plunder from the neighboring Turkish villages. As soon as they entered the village, the atmosphere was electrified and the horizon darkened as if a storm was approaching. They screamed curses and kicked doors in, ordering the inhabitants out into the village square. They threatened to set fire to the houses unless everyone came out. In a short time, women, children and the old ones found themselves crying and trembling in the streets. They sensed what would happen to them and many attempted to escape. The Turks and Tsets had foreseen such an eventuality and had blocked every avenue of escape. No one could leave. A few were shot and fell dead or limped back wounded. These men revealed, once and for all, their criminal intent and it was now apparent to the entire terrorized group of women and children that had been thrown into the streets, their cries rising in despair. Nothing they did now could soften the hardhearted cruelty of the henchman that had been chosen by Topal Osman for this “patriotic” expedition. These sadists began to enjoy the great fun of inflicting pain and torturing their victims. They kicked, struck, and yelled, pushing them toward the village square. The mothers, stood pale and disheveled in the bitter cold, trembling with fear while holding their clinging infants in close embrace. The young girls, some with their old parents and others with old women or holding up the sick, were herded like sheep, ready for slaughter,
into the middle of a pandemonium punctuated by heart-breaking cries and lamentations. Then they ordered their victims to enter two pre-selected houses in the vicinity of the square where they could complete their crime. They herded this unwilling flock into the houses with kicks and shouts. There was no doubt now about the fate that awaited them. The Tsets crammed over three hundred into those houses, anxious to finish their macabre enterprise. When they were sure that no one remained outside, they locked the doors oblivious to the cacophony of cries and supplications for mercy that reverberated in the surrounding mountains and forests. The final phase of this tragic event needed only a few handfuls of dry grass set alight to create a firestorm that engulfed the two houses in bloodcurdling screams through the pungent black smoke. What followed during the next hour cannot be adequately described… Crazed mothers clutched tightly, with the all the force of their souls, their crying babies to their bosom. Children cried for their mothers. The girls and the other women with the elderly, the children and the sick, screamed and seized each other as if they wanted to take and give the other courage and help until their hair, clothes and bodies were engulfed by the flames. Piercing cries, maniacal screams and thunderous, wild howls of people, overcome by terror and pain. They beat and flayed the air and the walls to no avail. Hell on earth! Some women and girls, in their despair and pain, threw themselves out of windows, preferring death from the bullets to the blazing inferno. Osman’s men who looked on smiling, enjoying the spectacle before them, were more than happy to accommodate these poor women by shooting them dead. The screaming began to dwindle, replaced by the noise of the crackling timbers and the crumbling walls falling on the smoldering bodies. Nothing remained but the ash and ruins of what used to be two homes in the town of Beyialan.
