Amphipolis Tomb May Belong to Alexander the Great’s Mother By Jennie Cohen
Speculation has been running wild in recent weeks over who might be buried in the massive tomb complex currently being excavated at Amphipolis, located in the region of Macedonia in northern Greece. Now, in a breakthrough discovery, archeologists excavating the site have exposed two 7-foot-tall marble statues inside the tomb, guarding the entrance to its main chamber. According to some scholars, the presence of these sculpted female figures, known as caryatids, strongly suggests that the tomb may belong to Olympias, the mother of the great warrior-king Alexander the Great. The Kasta Hill archeological site at Amphipolis, located some 370 miles north of Athens and 65 miles east of the city of Thessaloniki, is believed to be the largest burial site ever discovered in Greece. Dating to between 325-300 B.C., near the end of the reign of Alexander the Great, the burial mound and tomb complex was partially destroyed during the Roman occupation of Greece, but then appears to have survived without
looting for more than 2,000 years. A team of archeologists led by Katerina Peristeri began work at the site in 2012. Last month, they announced that they had unearthed a 1,600-foot-long marble wall encircling the tomb complex, a size that dwarfs the burial site of Philip II, Alexander’s father, in Vergina. Along with a long vaulted corridor leading to the tomb, the archeologists discovered two headless, wingless sphinxes guarding its entrance. They believe the tomb was originally crowned by a 16-foottall marble statue known as the Lion of Amphipolis, which was discovered a few miles away in the bed of the Strymonas River in 1912. Speculation has been running wild as to the occupant of the tomb, including claims that it might actually be Alexander the Great himself. Archeologists and historians have joined forces in dismissing this possibility, however, as the historical record indicates that Alex-

ander died in Babylon (modern-day Iraq) in 323 B.C. and was most likely buried in Egypt after Ptolemy, one of his former generals, stole the corpse while it was en route to Macedonia. (Alexander’s sarcophagus was later moved from Memphis to Alexandria, the capital of his kingdom, but by the fourth century A.D., its exact location was unknown.) The discovery of the two caryatids, which virtually mirror one another on either side of a marble doorway, is now fueling claims that the tomb belongs to a prominent female figure from Alexander’s time: specifically, Olympias, Philip II’s wife and the mother of the celebrated warrior-king. Caryatids, a common feature of Greek and Roman architecture, are pillars formed from sculptures of female figures. The ones flanking the entrance in the Amphipolis tomb stand more than seven feet tall, and are clothed in sleeved tunics and thicksoled shoes. Each caryatid has one arm outstretched, as if to block entrance to the tomb’s main chamber. According to Andrew Chugg, author of “The Quest for the Tomb of Alexander the Great,” the figures may not depict ordinary women, but Klodones, priestesses of Dionysus, the Greek god of wine. As Chugg writes in the Greek Reporter, the ancient Greek historian Plutarch recorded in his “Life of Alexander” that Olympias used to participate in Dionysiac rites and orgies with these Klodones. The baskets on their heads, Chugg recounts, held
Olympias’ pet snakes, which would often rear their heads out to scare the men participating in the rites. To further support his argument, Chugg points out that the archeologists excavating at Kasta Hill found a marble block painted with rosettes that resemble those on the coffin of Philip II at Vergina. Apart from Olympias, the most likely candidate to have been buried in the massive tomb at Amphipolis appears to be Roxana, Alexander the Great’s wife. The Macedonian general Cassander murdered Roxana in 311 B.C., along with her son Alexander IV, his father’s rightful heir to the throne. Other possible candidates include Alexander’s admirals Androsthenes, Laomedon and Nearchus; his generals Hephaestion and Antigonus Monophthalmus; and even Cassander himself. Chugg disagrees with these latter possibilities, arguing that the presence of the caryatids as guardians of the tomb means the occupant could not be male. Other observers suggest that it could not be a tomb at all, but a cenotaph, a tomblike monument built to commemorate Alexander, even though his body’s final resting place is elsewhere. Meanwhile, the team of archeologists continues their excavations at Amphipolis, hoping that further discoveries will shed more light on the questions that have captivated the world’s attention.

Φυλακίστηκαν τρεις αξιωματικοί της Πυροσβεστικής Υπηρεσίας και της ΕΜΑΚ, καθώς και ο πρώην υπουργός Άμυνας. Απαλλάχθηκαν αρκετοί, αγνοήθηκαν άλλοι τόσοι, προήχθησαν και επιβραβεύθηκαν σε θέσεις κλειδιά άλλοι, ενώ δεν έλειψαν και οι περιπτώσεις που οι κατηγορούμενοι έγιναν κατήγοροι. Η κοινή γνώμη όμως έμεινε ανικανοποίητη από τον τρόπο απονομής της Δικαιοσύνης στη Κύπρο, ενώ έγκριτοι νομικοί κύκλοι εστιάζουν το πρόβλημα στη λειτουργία του θεσμού της Γενικής Εισαγγελίας, κατάλοιπου της βρετανικής κατοχής της Κύπρου. Εύλογη απορία στα χείλη όλων γιατί δεν αξιοποιήθηκε η πορισματική αναφορά του Πόλυ Πολύβιου, καθώς και άλλα αποδεικτικά μέσα κατά τη διαδικασία προσδιορισμού των ενόχων. Μετά από δυόμισι χρόνια κατοχής του φορτίου (98 εμπορευματοκιβώτια) -και παρά τις πιέσεις ΟΗΕ και Ε.Ε. για καταστροφή τουαυτό ανατινάζεται σκοτώνοντας 13 ανθρώπους και τραυματίζοντας άλλους 70. Αυτά όλα διαδραματίστηκαν το 2009 επί προεδρίας Κυπριακής Δημοκρατίας, Δημήτρη Χριστόφια. Σήμερα, τέλη 2014, πρόκειται να ξεκινήσουν νέες προσπάθειες από τους συγγενείς των θυμάτων για απόδοση της Δικαιοσύνης και τιμωρία των υπευθύνων. Ερχονται στην επιφάνεια πολλές άγνωστες πτυχές, πληροφορίες, φωτογραφίες. Οι φυλακίσεις, οι απαλλαγές υπαιτίων. Τα ερωτήματα που αιωρούνται ακόμα στον αέρα είναι πολλά. Δεκατρείς θάνατοι, 70 τραυματισμοί, άπειρες ώρες δικαστικών διαδικασιών, νέα στοιχεία που επιλεκτικά απορρίφθηκαν από το δικαστήριο, ένας κατεστραμμένος ηλεκτροπαραγωγικός σταθμός, τέσσερις φυλακίσεις (τριών αξιωματούχων της ΕΜΑΚ και της Πυροσβεστικής, καθώς και του πρώην υπουργού Άμυνας -ο οποίος εδώ και ένα χρόνο εκτίει την ποινή του στο νοσοκομείο Λευκωσίας, δηλώνοντας… ασθένεια), μια δίκη (του Αρχηγού της Εθνικής Φρουράς, Πέτρου Τσαλικίδη) που εκκρεμεί στην Ελλάδα, η αναμονή για άρση της ασυλίας του πρώην Προέδρου της Κυπριακής Δημοκρατίας Χριστόφια… όλα ζητούν απαντήσεις. Κάποια από αυτά τα ζητήματα καταπλακώθηκαν από το σύστημα, άλλα περιμένουν να κατατεθούν σε δίκες που θα ξεκινήσουν εκ νέου. Βασικό ερώτημα: Αραγε, γιατί η Δικαιοσύνη δεν έλαβε υπόψη πως το φορτίο είχε διαφόρων ειδών εκρηκτικά και πολεμικό υλικό (όπως αποκάλυψε η αμερικανική νηοψία); Μήπως επειδή η παραδοχή αυτή θα σήμαινε και διασυρμό της Κυπριακής Δημοκρατίας σε Ε.Έ. και ΟΗΕ (που πίεζαν να καταστραφεί το υλικό), διότι θα αποδείκνυε ότι η πρώτη απέκρυπτε το γεγονός ότι το φορτίο μετέφερε ισχυρά εκρηκτικά (σύμφωνα, πάντα, με την αμερικανική νηοψία) και όχι απλά πυρίτιδα, όπως βαπτίστηκε στην πορεία; Πάντως, οι (άμεσα και έμμεσα) εμπλεκόμενοι μοιάζουν να αλληλοκαλύπτονται στρουθοκαμηλικά, όταν -βάσει αποφάσεων της Γενικής Εισαγγελίας- αναζητούνται οι ευθύνες μόνο για το χρονικό διάστημα λίγων ημερών πριν την έκρηξη και όχι για όλο το διάστημα των δυόμισι ετών εγκληματικής ολιγωρίας. Στην
προκείμενη περίπτωση, Ανδρέας Λοϊζίδης, Ανδρέας Νικολάου, Χαράλαμπος Χαραλάμπους (ΕΜΑΚ και Πυροσβεστική) είναι αυτοί που ενεπλάκησαν την τελευταία εβδομάδα πριν την έκρηξη. Και είναι αυτοί που καταδικάστηκαν ως υπαίτιοι για την έκρηξη, «ανακουφίζοντας» κάποιους άλλους, αφού είναι σαφές ότι η ευθύνη για τους χειρισμούς που οδήγησαν στην έκρηξη ξεκινά από πολύ νωρίτερα. Αυτοί οι «κάποιοι», όμως, ούτε «ανακουφισμένοι» θα νιώθουν, ούτε και θα κοιμούνται ήσυχοι πια. «Νίπτω τας χείρας μου» Η κυπριακή Δικαιοσύνη και ειδικά η Γενική Εισαγγελία παρέπεμψε όσους έκρινε υπευθύνους για την τραγωδία, χωρίς να λάβει υπόψη την εκτενέστατη πορισματική αναφορά του Πόλυ Πολυβίου. Με την κατηγορία «Παράλειψη Καθήκοντος» η κυπριακή Δικαιοσύνη και οι λοιποί εμπλεκόμενοι «δίκασαν» και ερεύνησαν τις ευθύνες μόνο για τις τελευταίες έξι ημέρες πριν την έκρηξη και κατέληξαν πως υπεύθυνοι ήταν οι τρεις αξιωματικοί Πυροσβεστικής και ΕΜΑΚ. Για το διάστημα των δυόμισι χρόνων που παρέμειναν στοιβαγμένα τα κοντέινερ δεν έχει γίνει καμία δικαστική διερεύνηση. Η κατηγορία εναντίον των τριών είναι ότι, έξι ημέρες πριν την έκρηξη, δεν ενημέρωσαν το προσωπικό για την επικινδυνότητα του φορτίου. Ομως, σύμφωνα με τις μαρτυρίες τους στο δικαστήριο, μπορεί να κλήθηκαν για αυτοψία του ενός εμπορευματοκιβωτίου που είχε διογκωθεί, αλλά ουδέποτε τους δόθηκε η δυνατότητα να την υλοποιήσουν. Δεν υπήρχε περίπτωση να γνωρίζουν τι περιείχε το κοντέινερ, αφού με πολιτική απόφαση και απόλυτη γνώση του Συνταγματάρχη Γ. Γεωργιάδη (όπως ξεκάθαρα προκύπτει από το πόρισμα Πολυβίου) είχε τοποθετηθεί «πόρτα πόρτα» με τα υπόλοιπα, ώστε να καθίσταται αδύνατη η πρόσβαση σε αυτό. Οι τρεις, λοιπόν, έκαναν το αυτονόητο. Ζήτησαν από τον Γ. Γεωργιάδη να κατέβει το κοντέινερ (που βρισκόταν σε ύψος δεύτερου πατώματος) στο έδαφος, ώστε να αποκτήσουν πρόσβαση σε αυτό. Αναλυτικά, στις 5 Ιουλίου 2011 ο γενικός διευθυντής του υπουργείου Αμυνας, Χρίστος Μαληκκίδης, ζητά να σταλεί αξιωματικός ώστε να παραστεί την επομένη, 6 Ιουλίου 2011, σε σύσκεψη στη Ναυτική Βάση και -αφού πραγματοποιήσει αυτοψία μαζί με τους υπολοίπους- να εισηγηθεί μέτρα προστασίας. Στην επομένη (6/7/11), ο Γ. Γεωργιάδης ενημερώνεται από τον Πάμπο Χαραλάμπους και Αντρέα Λοϊζίδη πως, για να γίνει
CYPRUS αυτοψία, πρέπει να κατεβεί με γερανό το εμπορευματοκιβώτιο αφού είναι αδύνατη η πρόσβαση σε αυτό. Οι τρεις αξιωματικοί φεύγουν αναμένοντας από τον κ. Γεωργιάδη να τους καλέσει μόλις το φορτίο γίνει προσβάσιμο. Το εμπορευματοκιβώτιο δεν κατέβηκε ποτέ και, έξι μέρες αργότερα (στις 11 Ιουλίου 2011) συνέβη η τραγική έκρηξη των 98 εμπορευματοκιβωτίων… Το κρίσιμο σημείο, το οποίο απεκρύβη από τους τρεις αξιωματικούς ήταν το περιεχόμενο του φορτίου. Ένα μυστικό που, αν ήταν σε γνώση τους, η τραγωδία μπορούσε να αποφευχθεί. Ένα μυστικό, που συνωμοτικά συγκαλύφθηκε μέχρι την τελευταία στιγμή, παρότι αποδεικνύεται ότι το γνώριζε ο συνταγματάρχης Γεωργιάδης. Ενώ οι τρεις θεωρούσαν ότι το φορτίο ήταν πυρίτιδα, η επίμαχη «φωτογραφία 28» αποδεικνύει ότι το κοντέινερ περιείχε κιβώτια με εκρηκτικά! Η συγκεκριμένη φωτογραφία τραβήχτηκε στις 6/7/11, από τον φωτογράφο του κ. Γεωργιάδη, ο οποίος έβαλε το χέρι του σε σημείο όπου το κοντέινερ είχε διογκωθεί και είχε «ανοίξει». Την κρίσιμη αυτή φωτογραφία, όμως, δεν την έδειξαν ποτέ στους πυροσβέστες, καθώς ελήφθη εν αγνοία τους τη μέρα που βρίσκονταν επιτόπου αλλά δεν απέκτησαν πρόσβαση στο κοντέινερ. Ένα ντοκουμέντο που καταδεικνύει ότι ο κ. Γεωργιάδης γνώριζε πως το κοντέινερ αυτό περιείχε κιβώτια με εκρηκτικά, αλλά στη σύσκεψη για το διογκωμένο κοντέινερ καθησύχασε τους υπόλοιπους πως πρόκειται για πυρίτιδα «που δεν εκρήγνυται». Για τη συγκεκριμένη φωτογραφία -που κατατέθηκε στο δικαστήριο από τους δικηγόρους των τριών αξιωματικών, αλλά δεν ελήφθη υπόψη από τη γενική εισαγγελία- ο Γ. Γεωργιάδης, στην κατάθεσή του, τόνισε πως αποδεικνύει ότι δεν είχαν μετακινηθεί τα κιβώτια. Αραγε, κανείς από την Γενική Εισαγγελία δεν «πρόσεξε» τις πινακίδες στα κιβώτια της ίδιας φωτογραφίας που αναγράφουν «explosives» Επιπλέον, στην κατάθεση του στην Αστυνομία ο κ. Γεωργιάδης δήλωσε «κατέχω μόνο γενικές γνώσεις για τις εκρηκτικές ύλες», ενώ σε άλλο σημείο ανέφερε ότι ενημέρωσε τον υπουργό Άμυνας για την επικινδυνότητα του φορτίου λέγοντας χαρακτηριστικά «πρέπει να σημάνει “κόκκινο συναγερμό”… αν γίνει οτιδήποτε στα κοντέινερ και καταστραφεί το Βασιλικό, θα πάει η Κύπρος στον Μεσαίωνα…» (φωτογραφία 21). Παρά ταύτα, η Γενική Εισαγγελία δεν έλαβε υπόψη της αυτό το στοιχείο. Γιατί άραγε; Αξίζει, σε αυτό το σημείο, να επισημανθεί ότι η αμερικανική νηοψία δεν αναφέρθηκε ποτέ ΜΟΝΟ σε πυρίτιδα, αλλά και σε «high explosives» (ισχυρά εκρηκτικά).
Την ημέρα της μεγάλης έκρηξης, όταν ο Πλοίαρχος Ιωαννίδης τηλεφώνησε στον κ. Γεωργιάδη, για να τον ενημερώσει πως καίγεται το φορτίο, ο συνταγματάρχης του ζήτησε να παραμείνει στον χώρο (και όχι να απομακρυνθεί και να εκκενώσει την Ναυτική Βάση). Σύμφωνα με την κατάθεση Γεωργιάδη στον επικεφαλής της ανακριτικής επιτροπής κ. Πολυβίου και στην Αστυνομία, ο συνταγματάρχης ζήτησε από τον Ιωαννίδη να περιμένει δίπλα στα κοντέινερ μέχρι να πάει και ο ίδιος. (φωτο 22). Δεν εμφανίσθηκε, όμως, ποτέ. Στο δικαστήριο ισχυρίσθηκε πως καθυστέρησε λόγω… της στολής του

Αυτές οι δύο φωτογραφίες ελήφθησαν μόλις έφτασε το φορτίο στην Κύπρο (δυόμισι χρόνια πριν τη μοιραία έκρηξη, δηλαδή), παρουσία του Βοηθού Αρχηγού Αστυνομίας Ιατρόπουλου και του Συνταγματάρχη Γεωργιάδη που επόπτευαν την νηοψία. Όπως φαίνεται καθαρά, παντού στα κιβώτια υπάρχει η ένδειξη «explosives» (εκρηκτικά) καθώς και I.E.D. (Improvised Explosive Device: Αυτοσχέδιος Εκρηκτικός Μηχανισμός, βόμβα που κατασκευάζεται με μη συμβατικές στρατιωτικές διαδικασίες - πρόσφατες χρήσεις: 1995-Οκλαχόμα, 2011-Παρέλαση Μάρτιν Λούθερ Κινγκ, 2013-Μαραθώνιος Βοστώνης).
Τα αναπάντητα ερώτηματα
Τα ερωτήματα για την «υπόθεση Μαρί» είναι δεκάδες και δεν χρειάζεται να έχει κάποιος νομικό υπόβαθρο για να τα θέσει. Κοινή λογική και νου χρειάζεται. Μια κατάθεση αποριών για πράγματα που δεν ειπώθηκαν και ανθρώπους που δεν κατονομάστηκαν (τους λόγους τους γνωρίζουν μόνο λίγοι). Εύλογα δημιουργείται η απορία πως ίσως πρόκειται για μια οργανωμένη συγκάλυψη, όπου οι εμπλεκόμενοι είναι δεμένοι με το μεγάλο ψέμα και το αποτέλεσμά της. Η παραδοχή πως όντως το φορτίο είχε και άλλες εκρηκτικές ύλες, που δεν αντιμετωπίστηκαν όπως επιβάλει ο διεθνής κανονισμός φύλαξης εκρηκτικών, θα τους έφερνε σε πολύ δύσκολη θέση. Οχι μόνον απέναντι στον κυπριακό λαό, αλλά και τους διεθνείς οργανισμούς που πίεζαν για δυόμισι χρόνια για την καταστροφή του υλικού. Αυτές τις απορίες καταθέτουμε εδώ για να αναγνωστούν από τους συνειδητοποιημένους πολίτες.
Ερώτημα πρώτο
Αντιπροσώπων «λόγω της επικινδυνότητας του φορτίου, διετάχθη να μετακινηθεί το καράβι 2 μίλια μακριά από το λιμάνι της Λεμεσού». Εφόσον, λοιπόν, γνώριζαν την επικινδυνότητα του φορτίου γιατί αμέλησε η Αστυνομία: α) να τοποθετήσει πινακίδες σήμανσης στα εμπορευματοκιβώτια με την ένδειξη «explosives» ή άλλο κωδικό αναγνώρισης επικίνδυνου υλικού (hazard identification codes) όπως αυστηρά ορίζει ο νόμος, σύμφωνα και με την «βίβλο» E.R.G.σελίδα 15, στην οποία στηρίχθηκαν οι κατηγορίες για τους τρεις αξιωματούχους, β) να ενημερώσει όλες τις αρμόδιες υπηρεσίες της (ΠυροσβεστικήΕΜΑΚ) για το περιεχόμενο –ή, έστω, για κάποιο από το περιεχόμενο που είχε ήδη ελεγχθεί.. Δηλαδή, αν τυχόν υπήρχε ανάφλεξη κατά τη μεταφορά ενός εμπορευματοκιβωτίου μέσα από κατοικημένες περιοχές, τι θα έκανε το Πυροσβεστικό Σώμα; Πού θα γνώριζαν πώς ν’ αντιμετωπίσουν τη φωτιά ή την έκρηξη, αφού δεν υπήρχαν σημάνσεις σε όλα τα εμπορευματοκιβώτια; Παρά ταύτα. η Γενική Εισαγγελία αποφάσισε να τοποθετήσει τον ίδιο άνθρωπο, τον Βοηθό Αρχηγό Αστυνομίας, επικεφαλής της ανακριτικής διαδικασίας για την απόδοση ευθυνών στους υπευθύνους. Σύμφωνα με την κατάθεση (από την κατάθεση του Ιατρόπουλου στην Βουλή των του Βοηθού Αρχηγού Αστυνομίας στην Βουλή των Αντιπροσώπων)
Cyprus Την ευθύνη του φορτίου, σε όλα τα στάδια από της εμφανίσεως του πλοίου μέχρι τη φύλαξη και αποθήκευση του στη Ναυτική Βάση «Ευάγγελος Φλωράκης» στο Μαρί, είχε ο Συνταγματάρχης Γεώργιος Γεωργιάδης, που -μάλιστα- έλαβε και τιμητική διάκριση για τον τρόπο με τον οποίο χειρίστηκε τη μεταφορά. Θυμίζουμε ότι ήταν ο ίδιος άνθρωπος: α) που, ενώ εξέτασε αρκετά εμπορευματοκιβώτια με διαφόρων ειδών οπλισμό και εκρηκτικά (όπως αποδεικνύουν οι φωτογραφίες-ντοκουμέντα), τα τοποθέτησε κάτω από την ταμπέλα της «πυρίτιδας», παρότι κατά την αμερικανική νηοψία η πυρίτιδα ήταν μέρος των εκρηκτικών. (Τα σχετικά πρακτικά των πολιτικών και στρατιωτικών συσκέψεων περιλαμβάνονται στο πόρισμα Πολυβίου)
Ερώτημα τέταρτο:
Γιατί τα πυρομαχικά αυτά έτυχαν πλήρους εξαιρέσεως από τους διεθνείς κανόνες φυλάξεως, όπως αυτοί επιβάλλονται από τις Πάγιες Διαταγές, ενώ ΗΠΑ, ΟΗΕ και Ε.Ε. ζητούσαν την καταστροφή τους; Γιατί δεν εφαρμόσθηκε η αυστηρή διαδικασία παρακολούθησης των πυρομαχικών (Πάγια Διαταγή 0-20/2007);
Ερώτημα πέμπτο
Γιατί δεν ελήφθη υπόψη από την Γενική Εισαγγελία το γεγονός ότι η «φωτογραφία 28» -που αποδεικνύει πως οι άμεσα εμπλεκόμενοι ανώτατοι αξιωματούχοι γνώριζαν τι υπήρχε στο κοντέινερ- δεν παρουσιάστηκε στον διοικητή της Βάσης, Ανδρέα Ιωαννίδη, από τον αρμόδιο για τη φύλαξη του φορτίου κ. Γεωργιάδη, στις 6 Ιουλίου οπότε και ελήφθη; Με ποια κριτήρια τις πέταξαν στα σκουπίδια οι της Γενικής Εισαγγελίας όταν κατατέθηκαν από τους νομικούς εκπροσώπους β) που επόπτευσε τη μεταφορά τους στη ναυτική των τριών αξιωματικών ΕΜΑΚ και Πυροσβεστικής; βάση, για την τοποθέτησή τους εκεί χωρίς σημάνσεις Γιατί απαλλάχθηκαν από το κατηγορητήριο άνθρωποισύμφωνα με το ERG (σ.σ. σύμφωνα με τις καταθέσεις κλειδιά και άμεσα υπεύθυνοι, σύμφωνα με το πόρισμα στην Αστυνομία, η εποπτεία της μεταφοράς ήταν και τις καταθέσεις, για το φορτίο και το περιεχόμενό έργο της ίδιας της Αστυνομίας και του κ. Γεωργιάδη του; προσωπικά, με εντολή του κ. Χριστόφια)
Ερώτημα δεύτερο:
Γιατί, ενώ στην αναφορά τόσο της κατασκευάστριας εταιρείας, όσο και στο μανιφέστο του πλοίου αλλά και της Αμερικανικής νηοψίας αναφέρεται η συμπιεσμένη πυρίτιδα ως μέρος του φορτίου ο Γ. Γεωργιάδης «βάφτισε» όλο το εμπόρευμα ως πυρίτιδα; Γιατί καθησύχασε ακόμα και τον Πλοίαρχο Ανδρέα Ιωαννίδη, με αποτέλεσμα ο τελευταίος να μείνει στη βάση και να ανατιναχθεί λίγη ώρα αργότερα μαζί με άλλους 12 (βάσει καταθέσεων, πρακτικών και πορίσματος Πολυβίου).
Ερώτημα τρίτο:
Γιατί να παραγγείλει η Συρία πυρίτιδα εφόσον έχει δική της παραγωγή; Ορισμένα σενάρια -που δεν είναι δυνατόν να επιβεβαιωθούν- θέλουν το πλοίο να μετέφερε υλικά απαραίτητα για τη συναρμολόγηση βλημάτων. Σύμφωνα με αυτά, η Συρία είχε έλλειψη από βλήματα και όχι από πυρίτιδα. Κάποιοι μιλούν για υλικά που θα οδηγούσαν στην κατασκευή 30.000 βλημάτων με κεφαλές εμπλουτισμένες με ουράνιο. Οι αμερικανικές αρχές ίσως έχουν στα χέρια τους φωτογραφίες που το αποδεικνύουν.
Ερώτημα έκτο
Πυροσβεστική και ΕΜΑΚ υπάγονται στην Αστυνομία και λειτουργούν κάτω από τους κανονισμούς του Περί Αστυνομίας νόμου. Στην κατάθεσή του στη Βουλή των Αντιπροσώπων, ο Βοηθός Αρχηγός Αστυνομίας κ. Ιατρόπουλος αναφέρει: «Εμείς είχαμε δει την επικινδυνότητα του φορτίου και για το λόγο τούτο το είχαμε μετακινήσει από την πρώτη μέρα δύο μίλια μακριά από το αγκυροβόλιο, είχαμε βγάλει απαγορευτικό διάταγμα να μην πλησιάζει σε απόσταση δυόμισι χιλιομέτρων πλοίο ή άνθρωπος». Αφού, λοιπόν, γνώριζε από την πρώτη στιγμή, γιατί δεν ενημέρωσε τους επικεφαλής Πυροσβεστικής και ΕΜΑΚ; Ο βουλευτής Κ. Κωνσταντίνου, κατά την ανάκριση της Βουλής, ρώτησε -εύλογα- τον Βοηθό Αρχηγό Αστυνομίας: «Τέθηκε άνθρωπος σε διαθεσιμότητα γιατί δεν ενημέρωσε κάποιους άλλους. Η Αστυνομία που δεν ενημέρωσε, πού τοποθετεί τον εαυτό της;». Παρά την κατάθεση αυτού του επιπέδου στη Βουλή των Αντιπροσώπων, ο Βοηθός Αρχηγός Αστυνομίας, αναλαμβάνει τις ανακρίσεις για την υπόθεση!

Τo περιεχόμενο των εμπορευματοκιβωτίων το γνώριζαν πολύ καλά οι λίγοι «εκλεκτοί», που είχαν ευθύνη να ενημερώσουν τον κυπριακό λαό. Δεκατρείς ανθρωποι σκοτώθηκαν γιατί εμπιστεύθηκαν το κράτος, το σύστημα και τους ανωτέρους τους. Αξιωματικοί φυλακίστηκαν γιατί έπρεπε κάποιοι να μπουν φυλακή. Οι πραγματικοί υπεύθυνοι για τα δυόμισι χρόνια εγκληματικής ολιγωρίας και λανθασμένων χειρισμών απεκρύβησαν -στην καλύτερη περίπτωση (άλλοι πήραν προαγωγή). Οι δικές τους ευθύνες δεν διερευνήθηκαν δικαστικά ποτέ. Σε ορισμένα δημοκρατικά πολιτεύματα, η Δικαιοσύνη μοιάζει να λειτουργεί περίεργα και επιλεκτικά. Οι νόμοι λικνίζονται και τροποποιούνται σαν λάγνες χορεύτριες ανάλογα με τον άνεμο. Η έκφραση «παράλειψη καθήκοντος» έχει χάσει εντελώς την έννοιά της. Ο θεσμός της Γενικής Εισαγγελίας ήρθε σε ευθεία σύγκρουση με το κοινό περί δικαίου αίσθημα. Θεσμός κατάλοιπο της βρετανικής κατοχής της Κύπρου, όπως αναφέρουν έγκριτοι νομικοί, διαπράττει αδικαιολόγητες
παραλείψεις και επιλέγει να μην εξετάσει καίρια ζητήματα, δημιουργώντας αίσθηση ατιμωρησίας και σπιλώνοντας την εικόνα της Δικαιοσύνης στη Κύπρο. Oταν, σε μια δίκη, ταυτίζεται το δημόσιο συμφέρον με το συμφέρον του Προέδρου της Δημοκρατίας, είναι φυσικό ο Γενικός Εισαγγελέας να μην ζητά άρση της ασυλίας του Δ. Χριστόφια. Σύμφωνα και με τις δηλώσεις του Αρχιεπισκόπου Κύπρου στο τεκμηριογράφημα (ντοκυμαντέρ) «Χτυπούν την πόρτα 13»: «κάποτε οι υπευθυνοι θα φανούν και θα λογοδοτήσουν». Ομως, πριν ανοίξουν νέες δίκες και δικαστικές διαδικασίες για άρσεις ασυλίας, μήπως θα έπρεπε να απολογηθεί πρώτη η Γενική Εισαγγελία στην κοινή γνώμη της Κύπρου για τις αδικαιολόγητες παραλείψεις της; Αν η κοινωνία (και η Δικαιοσύνη) λειτουργούσε με υγιή τρόπο θα τιμωρούσε όλους όσοι ευθύνονται για παράλειψη καθήκοντος. Έτσι, θα βρισκόμασταν όλοι μας πίσω απ' τα κάγκελα... Και οι υπαίτιοι, αλλά κι εμείς που παρακολουθούμε άπραγοι τον βιασμό της στον κυπριακής Δικαιοσύνης.

GREG KRITIKOS FROM A DARK PAST by Nick Christophers TO A BRIGHTER FUTURE Sometimes you need to survive a tragedy to find your place in the world. This would be the case for upcoming comedian/actor Greg “The Greek” Kritikos. Greg was raised on the tough streets of Astoria, Queens from 1971 through the 80’s. He came to America from Greece at a very young age along with his father, mother and sister. His father was a professional soccer player for the team Panagialo. After he retired from the sport decided to move to New York. Growing up in the predominantly Irish / Italian section of Astoria was not so simple for Greg. All of his countrymen lived along Ditmars Boulevard nowhere near where he was. Unfortunately, he became a victim of bullying and was involved in many altercations. This led to his growing animosity towards life. At twelve years old that animosity grew to an almost festering cauldron. Greg’s mother was hit by a drunken driver and she lost her leg and became an amputee. What made it worse was any help that was suppose to come from the government after the accident never materialized. These two key parts of his life led to his falling in line with the local tough element of Astoria. His new found Greek friends were tagged the “Steinway Boys” a group that even “yours truly” knew well. Greg would end up in prison around 1988 when released he returned to the streets. Yet after many years of abusing alcohol and running with the wrong crowd something was due to break. At that time he was well
over-weight at a staggering 385 lbs. He was then admitted for seven days of detox treatment at East Rockaway Saint Johns Hospital. Then three and half months at Phoenix House in Long Island City, there he made a pact with himself to truly turn his life around. He did just that when he meet a lady friend of his who approached him about doing stand-up comedy. At first he waived it off but then decided to take a crack at it. He soon found himself on stage at the New York Comedy club and made a go at it. For his first run he did fairly well. “Comedy comes with pain, everyone has a story,” says Greg. This would lead the road him doing shows in Washington, Idaho and Illinois. He has incorporated his fight with obesity, drinking and his “Goodfellas” lifestyle into his show. Locations like Spokane, WA ate up his show as Greg opened the door to a world they only see on TV. He goes by the name “Greg The Greek” which is simple and fitting. He lived in Washington for six months learning the ins and outs of the land which he added into his skit. The crowd was astonished at his knowledge of the area which helped make his show there a success. Also a close friend of Greg’s, Lou Calos produced a show in Spokane, Washington for him at the Bing Crosby Theatre. Lou is from NYC PRYME. “I found the people of that area of America very genuine.”

The first show he did in Washington was at Uncle D’s which is the #1 comedy club in the area. He knocked it out of the park and went on to states like Idaho and Oregon. The “funny bug” hit him early in life but he did not realize his potential till many years later. When he was growing up he was always attracted to the comedians in the industry. His favorite was Jackie Gleason he practically knows every episode of the “Honeymooners.”

Ο πρωθυπουργός της Βικτώριας εγκαινίασε το νέο κτίριο της Κοινότητας Η Κυριακή, 21 Σεπτεμβρίου, ήταν μια ιστορική ημέρα τόσο για την Ελληνική Κοινότητα Μελβούρνης, όσο και για την ελληνική παροικία με την επίσημη εγκαινίαση του νεόδμητου κοινοτικού κτιρίου, από τον πρωθυπουργό της Βικτώριας κ. Ντένις Ναφθάιν, παρουσία πολιτικών παραγόντων, του πρεσβευτή της Ελλάδας κ. Χ. Δαφαράνου, του επισκόπου Δέρβης κ. Ιεζεκιήλ που τέλεσε και για τον αγιασμό, δεκάδων εκπροσώπων ομογενειακών οργανώσεων, ευεργετών της Κοινότητας και μεγάλου αριθμού ομογενών. Κηρύσσοντας τα επίσημα εγκαίνια του νέου κτιρίου ο πρωθυπουργός της Βικτώριας κ. Ντένις Ναφθάιν αναφέρθηκε στην ιστορία της Κοινότητας και στην προσφορά των Ελλήνων στη Βικτώρια και την Αυστραλία, λέγοντας πως το Ελληνικό Κέντρο «θα παρέχει το χώρο όπου η προσφορά και η ιστορία των Ελλήνων της Αυστραλίας θα γιορτάζεται και αναγνωρίζεται και στο μέλλον».
«Σήμερα ανοίγουμε τις πόρτες μας όχι μόνο στα μέλη της Κοινότητας, αλλά και σε όλη την παροικία, σε όλες τις εθνικότητες, σε όλους τους κατοίκους της Αυστραλίας. Το κτίριο αυτό, που στέκεται δίπλα μας είναι καθαρά ελληνικό. Όταν περνάμε από το κέντρο της πόλης θα βλέπουμε το δισκοβόλο πάνω στο γυάλινο εξωτερικό του, την αναπαράσταση του ζωοφόρου του Παρθενώνα στην πρόσοψή του, θα βλέπουμε αυτό το μοντέρνο κτίριο και θα νιώθουμε μεγάλη υπερηφάνεια. Γιατί είναι το Ελληνικό Κέντρο, γιατί είναι η απόδειξη της ευημερίας και της προόδου στην παροικία μας.» Παράλληλα, ευχαρίστησε την Ελλάδα για την στήριξή της προς την Κοινότητα, την Ομοσπονδιακή Κυβέρνηση και την κυβέρνηση της Βικτώριας για τη χρηματοδότηση του Ελληνικού Κέντρου με το συνολικό ποσό των $4 εκατομμυρίων. Σημειώνεται ότι η Ομοσπονδιακή κυβέρνηση της Αυστραλίας χορήγησε δύο εκατομμύρια δολάρια για το πολιτιστικό κέντρο, ενώ ανάλογο ποσό για τον ίδιο σκοπό διέθεσε και η πολιτειακή κυβέρνηση της Βικτώριας.
«Σήμερα είναι μια ιστορική ημέρα για την Κοινότητά μας και για την παροικία μας,» τόνισε ο πρόεδρος της Κοινότητας κ. Βασίλης Παπαστεργιάδης καλωσορίζοντας τους επισήμους και το κοινό. «Το όνειρο έχει γίνει πραγματικότητα.
