EDITOR’S LETTER

Welcome Vanessa

Vanessa Richmond, Editor

We talk a lot in Ideal Home about classic style and timeless choices, because we’re not into wasting money or trends that only last a season. That sits comfortably with me, being more of a planner than a spontaneous type, but the older I get, the more I appreciate the joy of acting on a whim! And, looking around my home, I realise that while the well-researched buys that have paid off over time give me solid satisfaction, it’s the things I bought or did without over-thinking them that give me daily heart-pings of joy – like the silly gold pineapple sippy cups I added to an Amazon order with my nieces in mind, but now use for workday water, the frame I painted around my bedroom window with some leftover blue, and the William Morris ‘Pure’ fabric I bought on sight, with no idea what to do with it (I made it into a duvet cover!). This issue, while it has the usual quota of ‘head’ ideas, has a bigger focus on ‘heart’, which might just take your style in a new and unexpected direction…

Our home brings me year-round joy – cosying up around the woodburner in winter or throwing open the bifolds in the summer

eena Simon’s first impression of her house was of a dark, unloved property that didn’t feel at all like the light, bright and cosy family home she was looking for. But, walking through the rooms, she began to see its potential until eventually, the exposed brickwork in the main bedroom finally won her over: ‘I was drawn to the age and architectural details of the house so, although it resembled an Eighties ski lodge with orange pine cladding, I could see its character and charm,’ she says. The biggest challenge was how to transform the dark rooms downstairs into bright, open family spaces. ‘We stripped out all the elements that were making it feel cramped, including uneven flooring, cladding, shelving and a sunken fireplace,’ says Reena. ‘We fitted extra-wide oak plank flooring, which lengthens the spaces and creates a tactile, natural look with a Scandinavian feel that I love. I’m drawn to lots of design influences, but my style is modern rustic Nordic, with an industrial vibe. I think it works if you embrace any trends that appeal to you and use them to personalise a simple room for a look you love.’ Installing new bifold doors in the kitchen was transformative. ‘I can now be cooking as the children play in the garden and we don’t have to spend half an hour getting coats on to go to the park,’ says Reena. Knocking out a small utility room further opened up the space. ‘One of the hardest things about a small, busy family home that lacks built-in storage is finding a place for everything. I’ve used a combination of freestanding units and baskets that look good and hide plastic toys. I also look for vintage pieces that can be adapted into clever storage solutions, like old wooden crates.’

We found the reclaimed wooden beam on eBay, and it makes a brilliant rustic mantelpiece.’ BUY THE KEY PIECES Tobias mirror, £103.50, Maisons du Monde. IN MY EXPERIENCE

‘I’m bringing my kids up in my childhood home’ When Lorenza Bacino was growing up, she couldn’t wait to leave suburbia, but following her mother’s sudden death 11 years ago, she began to see her old family home in a different light…

Lorenza in her parents’ home

L

orenza Bacino, 52, lives with her husband, Francis, their son Max, 15, and daughter, Isabella, 13, in a four-bedroom detached Thirties house in the suburbs of north London. Lorenza’s parents bought the house in 1968. ‘Mum was English and Dad was an Italian writer and journalist 20 years her senior. They met and fell in love in Paris in the Fifties. After living in France for a while, they moved to Rome, which is where I was born. And that’s where the story stops sounding so exciting and bohemian! In 1968, when I was two years old, we left Italy and moved to a large detached house with a big garden on a nice street on the outskirts of north London. Growing up, I was desperate to escape suburbia and start exploring the world. I was an only child and the house seemed like a very austere, grown-up place. I couldn’t see its many positives back then. I just saw heavy, dark wood Italian furniture, brown carpets and carefully arranged books, art and sculptures. Dad was a very single-minded, and sometimes difficult, man. He’d be busy at his desk while Mum did everything around the house. I left home at 18 to study languages at university, then lived and worked abroad – France, Italy, Belgium and Australia – over 22 years. I still came back to London to visit my parents, but it was always with a slight sense of dread. Not much had changed in the house and a couple of days there always seemed to be enough. As Dad grew older, his health began to suffer. He was physically infirm and had glaucoma, but still

One of the house’s highlights is the huge garden

The London home Lorenza grew up in

insisted on trying to go out and do all the things he’d always done. It made life difficult for Mum and I’d end up feeling stressed and upset because I couldn’t do anything to change it. Dad died at 89, and Mum was left in the house by herself. She had plans to make changes and clear a lot of things out, but in the end never got the chance to see those plans through, as she died very suddenly following a stroke just a few years later. My family and I were living in Brussels at the time, but we were planning to move to Nepal because Francis had been offered work there. Max was four and Isabella was two. Everything was put on hold. We rushed over to London as soon as I got the news of Mum’s stroke. She was in a coma for three weeks before she died. It was horrible walking into the house, because everything was just as she’d left it, with washing-up in the kitchen sink

For Lorenza, the house never felt child-friendly

IN MY EXPERIENCE

Lorenza’s mum had always been a proud gardener The couple turned Lorenza’s dad’s dark, foreboding study into a modern family kitchen

and now out-of-date food in the fridge. So many things started going wrong in the house, too: the boiler packed up, then the washing machine broke down. It was like the whole place was coming out in sympathy! We did go back to Brussels for a few weeks after the funeral, but it soon became clear that I wouldn't be able to sort everything out from there. So, we decided to move back to London “just for a little while”, so we could tidy up the property and get it on the market. It felt really strange to suddenly be living in my old family home with my “new” family. The house seemed somehow familiar and yet unfamiliar at the same time. There were so many things to think about and everything took far longer to sort out than I'd originally imagined. I completely underestimated how long it would take to sort through all my parents’ belongings and make decisions about what to keep and what to get rid of, for

I never had when I was younger and accepted that it was the home I now needed. We gradually made changes to the property. We repainted and bought new flooring. We got rid of most of the furniture – all the heavy tables and bureaux that had suited my parents’ style, but not ours. I kept Dad’s bookcase, but it’s now full of our books instead of his. There’s still a mishmash of our stuff and my parents’ throughout the house, but it just has a more relaxed feel to it now. In the Seventies, Dad had built an extension at the back of the house that became his library and workspace. It had always seemed such a dark and serious place, despite its big window overlooking the garden. We’ve now turned it into the family kitchen. It’s a bright, airy space and couldn’t feel more different. The original tiny kitchen has been turned into a playroom for the children. Now they’re older, they still hang out in there – although the dog has laid claim to it, too! And there’s a large, open-plan living room, which currently has the kids’ drum kit in the middle of it. I think Dad would have kittens if he could see that! I think the house's biggest draw is the huge garden, though. Again, it’s something I didn't appreciate when I was younger. Mum was a proud gardener, but she kept things very uniform, with a perfectly manicured lawn, neat flowerbeds and a rockery. Our approach is far more relaxed and we’ve allowed it to grow a bit wild, but we love it like that. We’re out there all the time in the summer months. I do occasionally miss living abroad, but we have amazing holidays instead – and there’s no point in living with regrets. I understand how lucky we are to live here. Overall, there’s a more happy, homely feel to the place now. My relationship with my dad could be tricky at times, but my kids have a wonderful relationship with theirs. They love living here and, while it was certainly a rollercoaster for the first few years after moving in, Francis and I have grown to love it, too.’

example. The truth is, in the end it took about two years to get it all into some sort of order. And, 11 years on, there are still piles of Dad’s diaries and papers I have yet to tackle. Meanwhile, normal life got in the way. The kids settled at nursery and school. Francis and I both found new work opportunities in London. We put down roots without even realising it was happening. There was no deep discussion about it. We’d always just assumed we’d move abroad again at some point, but it just didn’t happen. One day, Francis asked me what I wanted to do and I realised that I just wanted to “be”. It felt as if everything had been so complicated and chaotic since Mum died, so now I just wanted to settle down here, relax and be happy together. Besides, by then I’d come to appreciate the house in a way

hen Tessa and Menno Hop began to feel the squeeze in their old home, they started to think about the next step. ‘It was a nice house, but too small for us and our three boys,’ says Tessa. ‘We had outgrown it.’ ‘Then, we were inspired by a bespoke-built French holiday home we stayed in. It had just the right amount of space, good proportions, a perfect floor plan with a big, open-plan living space – and we noticed how it worked for us. It got us thinking!’ Back home, the couple found land for sale nearby. ‘It was being sold by the metre, so we could decide exactly how much space we needed, and build whatever style of property we wanted,’ says Tessa. ‘We chose a 24x24m plot.’ ‘We spent six months drawing up plans, a further year getting the permissions needed, then six more months building and finishing the house.’ The couple completed the entire process without hiring an

architect: ‘By the time we’d got to the planning stage, we knew very clearly what we wanted,’ says Tessa. The house was built off site and transported to the plot in sections. The exterior is clad in western red cedar, which turns grey as it ages, with black metal window frames for a simple, modern look. Wellinsulated walls and a solar-panelled roof add ecofriendly credentials. ‘It’s basically a rectangular box,’ says Tessa, ‘with a column sticking out, housing the staircase. We didn’t want the stairs in the centre of the house, as the children run up and down them all day.’ In keeping with the simple, natural materials of the exterior, the interior is finished in white, grey and pastel tones, with abundant wooden touches, and a modern Scandinavian feel. The open-plan living the couple coveted has proved a hit with every member of the household. ‘This house works so well for us,’ says Tessa. ‘It’s exactly how we’d imagined it.’

iving in a barn conversion was a dream of mine,’ says Tracy Head. ‘I kept a photo of one I had found in a magazine and fallen in love with – it totally inspired me.’ Tracy was living in an Edwardian house in a suburb of Reading with her husband Steve and sons Toby and Max when they decided it was time to move to a barn. ‘We looked throughout the area but there weren’t any around.’ Then the couple came across a Colt timber-framed bungalow that was in a rural location not far away. ‘We fell in love with the area – it was in pretty countryside, but within easy reach of Henley-onThames and trains to London. We came down the track to the house to view it and it felt secluded, as if it was a million miles from anywhere. We loved the bungalow – there was a definite charm about it.’ Tracy and Steve bought the house. ‘Initially we had hoped to renovate it and make it more barn style – we had renovated our Edwardian house so we had some experience. But when we started looking at renovating it, we realised it was very basic and would cost more to renovate than it would to rebuild it.’ So the decision was taken to knock down the house and start again with

Living room

Off-white sofas from Sofa.com are arranged around the corner wood burner. ‘It is lit every evening in winter and makes it so cosy and homely,’ says Tracy. The couple planned a feature wall niche to hold logs

their own design, with the help of an architect. ‘Because we were living here, we knew where the light came in and where we wanted to live and work. For instance, the kitchen was where the family room is now, but there was much more light in the middle of the house, so we swapped them around to get a light-filled kitchen.’ The architect came up with a design for the barn and planning permission went smoothly. ‘We built on the existing footprint,’ says Tracy, ‘and were considerate of our neighbours by building a one-and-a-half storey property rather than two storey. I knew what I wanted – the architect designed the shell and I did the rest. It had been in my head for a long time!’ For example, Tracy found an image of a staircase she liked on Pinterest and the architect designed it with a curved brick wall. The stairs were then made on site by carpenters, who cut the treads to size from pieces of solid oak flooring. The family lived in a three-bedroom annexe, which was built first, for the 20 months it took to build the main barn. ‘We pared everything down and lived simply,’ says Tracy. ‘It was great for bonding considering it was such a small space, but we had to be very organised.’ Tracy employed a project manager and used subcontractors MARCH 2019

Living room

A big, lime-washed, reclaimed-wood coffee table from Vintage Barn Interiors gives the room lived-in character, with antiqued-silver accessories for contrasting polish

when needed, which worked well. ‘The project manager was amazing. I knew what I wanted and sourced things myself, but he sorted out all the technical stuff. The finished house is eco efficient with solar panels and thick insulation. ‘Although it’s very open plan, we’ve been able to keep the heating costs low. We have log burners and love them – they’re really cosy,’ says Tracy. ‘I planned the look at the start of the build so it was cohesive. Everything was decided as soon as we were digging the foundations – even down to the colours of the doors. We had to make a decision about the flooring early on so that gave me the impetus to plan everything.’ Having founded two homeware businesses, when it came to the interior of the property, Tracy had a clear idea of what she wanted to achieve. She teamed industrial elements with painted furniture and several finds from Vintage Barn Interiors, to create a chic modern country look. ‘It’s so cosy in winter but great in summer, too, because it’s south-facing,’ she says. The family have settled into the area now: ‘We love the beautiful countryside and the friendly village community. REAL HOME

Make it work for you TRACY’S CHOICE: BUILDING A HOUSE Has Tracy’s self-build home sparked dreams of your own grand design? These are the basics you need to know…

Q

How do I find a plot? Firstly, decide where you’d like to live then contact local agents and sign up with online plot search portals. It’s also worth driving around to identify any in-fill sites. Also check the local councils for new planning applications – then approach the applicant direct to avoid estate agent fees. And don’t discount plots with properties on them. If they’re unsafe (and not Listed), the planning office should support demolition of the site.

Q

What will it cost? On top of the plot fee, and any resultant legal costs, around £1,500£3,000sq m is a fair guide for self-builders. There are additional costs that could trip you up though. For example, the price of connecting to services depends on how close the plot is to existing supplies.

Q

Who will build it? The most popular route is to commission either an architect or developer to design and build your home. This kind of turnkey solution, which includes planning

permission and design fees, is the quickest, and least stressful, route. Specialist kit house companies often offer a range of packages, depending on your budget and how much you want to do yourself. It can be as little as making and installing a timber frame, right up to final fix and decorating. Another popular route is to hire a local building firm with site manager, who will work to your drawings.

Q

How can I keep costs low? Project-managing your own build can save around 15-20 per cent of your build costs, but do be sure you have the time, energy and nous to research the best materials, haggle down prices and source and manage trades efficiently. If you have the skills and time available, a completely DIY build is undoubtedly the cheapest, but rarely the fastest route. Keep the design simple and you can achieve a comfortable four-bed home with a footprint of 150sq m for about £150-200,000.

It’s been wonderful seeing our ideas come to life and we know we’ll be happy here for a long time

ate and Gregory couldn’t believe their luck when a house on one of their favourite streets in their local neighbourhood went on the market within their budget. ‘It was in close proximity to one of the local outstanding primary schools, too, which was at the top of our priority list,’ explains Kate. ‘The house offered the space we needed and the scope to put our own stamp on it without the need for much renovation,’ she says. Structurally, all the couple did was remove the downstairs loo to open up and connect the living, dining and kitchen areas. ‘We knew that an openplan layout would be best for our young family,’ says Kate. ‘We love to host friends and family, too, so linking the spaces was important so we can all be together when one of us is cooking,’ she says. ‘The kitchen was the biggest challenge as we had to work around the existing plumbing in a relatively small space and design something that would flow into the new open-plan area.’ The finished space is divided into two zones: one with the oven and fridge; the other with the sink and storage. When it came to the decor, the couple decided to get expert help and hired interior designer Elena Creswell (elenacreswell.com) to make it work. ‘We wanted to create a modern family home with a cottage feel that suits the age of the property and the area we live in.’ They briefed Elena to come up with a look combining Scandi and modern-country styles. ‘Seeing inspiration boards from Elena helped me to visualise each room,’ says Kate. ‘It was helpful to see how the colours, furniture and texture would work together, so I could understand what the end result would look like.’

2

Plump for a rusticstyle plinth

Upgrade your washstand to a piece with a bit more character, like this chunky wooden one. Ask your builder to make a simple timber frame, or upcycle an old table or sideboard, setting your basin on top.

3

SHINE UP YOUR HARDWARE

Refresh your bathroom by swapping limescale-covered taps and shower heads for smart new brushed brass or copper ones. Or give existing ones a good goingover with a limescale remover. MPRO 300mm shower head in brushed brass, £299, Crosswater

5

REVIVE TIRED GROUTING If dirty grout is getting you down, update it. If you have a white metro-tiled wall, try a black or grey grout – not only will it seriously ramp up the style stakes, but it’s also much easier to keep looking clean. Hawthorn white tiles, £34.60sq m, Laura Ashley range, British Ceramic Tile

4

CHOOSE A SUBTLE SHIMMER

Add glam to an all-white bathroom with tiles that catch the light to reveal a subtle pattern. Pair with white marble floor tiles and splashes of green.

Soap dispenser, £10; soap dish, £7; tumbler, £8, all Nordic collection, Debenhams

6

REFRESH YOUR BATHROOM ACCESSORIES

A few new accessories can give your bathroom a brand-new feel, and they don’t have to cost a fortune either. Dispense some own-brand hand soap into a smart pump bottle, turn a pretty candle jar into a toothbrush holder or treat your bathroom to a whole new matching set for a cohesive look. MARCH 2019

9

Pick a simple countertop basin

An elegant yet sleek countertop basin makes a statement and frees up surface space. Go for an oval or round shape, and wallmounted taps for easier cleaning.

Mora ash tiles, £49.93sq m; Berkeley charcoal tiles, £67.95sq m, both Topps Tiles

Cheaper than tiling, wallpapering your bathroom can add stunning colour and pattern and take plain white tiles to a new level. Avoid papering directly behind a bath or basin and try sealing the paper with a matt decorator’s varnish.

Statement tiles behind a basin will provide an eye-catching splashback that won’t cost much or take long. If your bathroom is plain, choose a patterned option to add interest.

20

Throw out your threadbare, soggy bath mat and upgrade to something more luxurious. This eye-catching design could be mistaken for an exotic rug and will transform a lacklustre bathroom in an instant. Anthropologie Raja bath mat, £44, John Lewis

30

UPGRADE YOUR LIGHTING

New light fittings or a couple of extra spotlights will give your bathroom a new look. If natural light is lacking, use mirrors to boost what light there is and go for warm white bulbs.

27

Extend the walls to the floor

For a slick, cohesive look, go for tiles that can be extended from the walls to the floor to create a stylish cocoon. Oversized tiles with minimal grout lines between each work best, so the look remains neat and streamlined.

28

THE BIG QUESTION

Should kids be allowed TVs in their bedrooms? Do kids have the right to relax and unwind any way that works for them, or should TVs be banished? Two mums argue their case…

Yes

No

Kids need the freedom to relax

Bedrooms should be for sleep, not screens

FEATURE JANE MURPHY PHOTOGRAPH ALAMY

Stacey MacNaught, 33, lives with her husband, Michael and their two sons, Oliver, three, and Ethan, two, in a three-bed semi in Oldham. She works as a freelance SEO consultant. ‘I strongly believe that children should be entitled to their own space in which to wind down and relax. And, let’s face it, watching TV is one of the main ways in which kids do that. So, while they’re both a little young at the moment, it’s inevitable that Oliver and Ethan will want their own TVs in their bedrooms before too long – and I won’t stand in their way. Of course, there are legitimate concerns about children having too much screen time or watching inappropriate programmes. But technology can take care of the monitoring for us nowadays. You can use parental-control filters to block certain channels and shows, and set viewing limits or a switch-off time. It’s much easier, and less confrontational, to lay down some rules from the outset, rather than sticking your head around the door to police what they’re watching every five minutes. We normally have an hour’s downtime before Oliver goes to bed, and he now often asks if he can play in his bedroom instead of staying in the sitting room with us. As the boys grow older, they’ll want to watch TV or play computer games with their friends. We won’t all want to watch the same thing at the same time, so it makes perfect sense for them to have screens of their own.’

Emily Davidson, 44, lives in a four-bed semi in Norwich with her partner Dan and their three children, Noah, nine, Eli, seven, and Eve, four. She’s currently a full-time mum. ‘Allowing children to have TVs in their bedrooms puts too much temptation in their way. That said, our kids have never asked for their own TVs and I don’t think it would even have occurred to them, partly because Dan and I don’t have a TV in our bedroom, either. In fact, we try to keep all kinds of LED screens out of the bedrooms, simply because they interfere with sleep quality. We all lead busy lives and need our slumber, after all, so the kids tend to wind down with a bedtime story or a comic. That’s not to say we don’t all love watching TV, and one of the unexpected pleasures of parenthood has been watching it together as a family. If everyone goes off to watch TV in different rooms, you lose that shared experience. But, I must admit, we’ve taken to hiding the remote controls, so they don’t wander into the sitting room and mindlessly turn on the TV. Once it’s on, it’s hard to switch it off. Given the chance, any one of us could spend 24 hours a day sitting in front of the small screen. There’s so much choice and so much temptation nowadays. Not allowing screens in bedrooms is one way to address that, and to encourage our kids to amuse themselves and to develop other interests and social skills – as well as have a good night’s sleep.’

With parental controls, technology can take care of monitoring their viewing for us

Welcome to my home Isobel Spandler lives here with her husband Mark and their children, Jasper, 15, and Anna, 10.

THE PROPERTY

A three-bedroom semi-detached 1880s farm worker’s cottage in Wiltshire, bought in May 2008.

WHAT IT COST

‘Units had been crammed into the room, which resulted in a mishmash,’ says Isobel. The couple put up a wall between the kitchen and adjoining utility so they could put a long peninsula against it, adding tons of cupboard space. KITCHEN PROJECT

HOW ISOBEL AND MARK DID IT ‘We painted the existing units soon after moving in, but it wasn’t a long-term solution. Everything was falling apart and one unit jutted out, so you had to walk around it. It looked horrible and made the space disjointed. There was so little storage, I had to buy a dresser to put in the room next door. I really wanted an island with a breakfast bar, even though the floor space was limited.

BUILT-IN RACK A clever way to fill in unused height or width

112

MARCH 2019

We hired a kitchen designer, who designed a better layout. An island wasn’t possible, but building the partition wall meant we could have a peninsula unit. We began the extension in the August and it was finished by Christmas. We worked to a £30,000 budget, spending most of that on the cabinets but saved on fixtures and fittings. The quality is great and it’s such a joy to use.’

BELOW ‘There’s no window at the end of the kitchen, so it was important to boost light,’ says Isobel, who kept the scheme pale, with touches of oak for warmth, tying in with the original beams. Traditional-style units with marble worktops give a classic but modern look. Walls painted in Wood Ash intelligent matt emulsion, £48.50 for 2.5L, Little Greene. Bumble stools, £280 a pair, Loaf.

Make it work for you ISOBEL’S CHOICE: MARBLE WORKTOPS Nothing adds luxury to a kitchen like a cool, beautiful marble worktop (or a fabulous fake!) Classic white marble is one of the most popular choices for worktops. Just scroll through Pinterest and you’ll see shot after shot of gleaming white marble surfaces showcased in every style of kitchen, from traditional to uber modern.

sanding the surface to give a soft, matte finish, which won’t show scratches so easily, but is more susceptible to staining, as the pores are more exposed. Polished marble has a reflective, glossy surface which is less likely to stain, but will scratch more easily.

Q

Q

Why should I choose it? Marble has a luminosity, brightness and smoothness that sets it apart from other natural stones. A metamorphic rock, formed when sediment crystallises under heat or pressure to form hard rock, marble is a form of limestone. Marble is a poor conductor of heat, meaning it stays cool to the touch, so pastry chefs love it, as the cool surface is great for working dough.

Q

Are there any drawbacks? The porosity of marble means it’s susceptible to staining, with red wine and oil most difficult to get out. Products like Lithofin can make marble more resistant to oil and water but won’t completely seal it. It’s also easily damaged by acidic liquids, which leave a dull, pitted surface. And as marble is soft, it is prone to scratches.

Q FEATURE LISA FAZZANI PHOTOGRAPH DAVID PARMITER

What about finishes? When it comes to worktops, there are two main types. Honed marble, which is created by

Is it expensive? Carrara marble is one of the more readily available worktop materials and one of the least expensive. Expect to pay more for rare, luxurious varieties such as Calacatta or Statuario.

Q

How do I look after it? Marble worktops should be sealed when installed and then every six months or so, although spills should be wiped up straight away, especially anything acidic. Clean using hot soapy water and a soft cloth, buffing dry to avoid water marks. Go for a pH neutral cleaner like Lakeland’s Daily Granite & Marble Surface Cleaner spray, £8.99 for 946ml.

ROW OF LIGHTS Highlights the space-dividing peninsula

HOW EVELYN AND TOM DID IT ‘The dining room was never used and we knew that if we knocked down the dividing wall we’d have to replace the flooring in both rooms. The kitchen units were worn and poor quality, so everything culminated in a decision to remodel the entire space. We wanted a warm, light and comfortable place where we could sit down and eat together. We felt out of our depth, so asked an interior designer, Maya Wilson (mayawilsoninteriors.co.uk), for advice. The kitchen was made bespoke and the units arrived ready painted. The same company also made the dresser to fit the old fireplace in the dining area. The building work and installation cost £21,000 and took 12 weeks. We ‘camped’ upstairs with a hotplate and microwave, but the timing was critical, as we needed it done before the arrival of our second child! We’re delighted with the end result – it’s fabulous!’

118

MARCH 2019

The dark blue units work, now that the space is so bright. By arranging them in an L shape, they define the borders of the kitchen area and make it appear more spacious. ‘It was a bold choice, but I’m glad I went for it,’ says Evelyn. Metro tiles £19.50sq m, Topps Tiles. Juniper Ash and Slaked Lime Mid intelligent eggshell, both £62 for 2.5L, Little Greene

BATHROOM PROJECT SLIDING DOORS More streamlined than concertina style in a small bathroom

A fixed showerhead is drenching, while a hand-held is great for cleaning the enclosure. Luxury showerhead, arm, thermo valve control and hand shower set, £770, Pura Bathrooms

HOW ANNIE DID IT

Annie didn’t change the layout, as it made sense as it was, but by choosing streamlined fittings and storage and a clever colour scheme, she’s made it more modern and less cluttered. Shower doors, £629; Truestone tray, £565, both Merlyn. Wood white beige floor tiles, £45.50sq m, Boyden Tiles and Bathrooms

‘I bought my home as a new build and the bathroom, though functional, was never a style I would have chosen for myself. I asked several companies to submit plans, but it was Rosie Proto’s of The Brighton Bathroom Company that impressed me the most. I gave her a budget to work to and she stuck to it. There were no structural or layout changes, which kept the costs down. I wanted the colour scheme to work with my bedroom and Rosie suggested a yellow patterned tile to create an accent wall, which I love as it really draws the eye. In a small space, colour gives it soul, but you have to choose tones that complement rather than contrast with each other. The installation cost £7,528 and the project took four weeks to complete. It’s now a calm, relaxing space I love spending time in, rather than just a purely functional shower room.’ MARCH 2019

W

hen Sophie and Matthew Wiltshire wanted to move from London to Surrey four years ago, they took a chance on a run-down house. ‘Weybridge was really different, but it’s so nice around here, hardly anyone leaves,’ says Sophie. ‘When we first saw the house, I walked down the stairs and it felt like I’d come home.’

Knocking down the old-fashioned round conservatory gave the family space for this big kitchen-diner which opens onto the garden

and the family lived there for more than two and a half years before they decided to start work on it. The upstairs space had become inadequate, with the main bedroom particularly tight. The front door was at the side of the house, which the couple disliked, and the old conservatory tacked onto the poky kitchen was freezing in winter and stuffy in summer. They took their ideas to an architect, who did technical drawings and enlisted the help of a builder recommended to them by friends. THE NEW SPACE The conservatory was removed and

replaced with a two-storey extension to create space for a kitchen-diner, utility room and living areas. ‘We also have space in the loft for another bedroom,’ Sophie says. The project took just six months. ‘We were so lucky to find a house eight doors away to rent during the work, but when we returned, the house had been transformed. I love the look of the timber cladding – it’s exactly what I wanted. And, with the river at the end of the garden, it feels like we live in the country, even though it’s a town.’

Dormer windows add headroom

5 THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT…

Dormer windows

Jo Edwards at Edwards Rensen Architects has the lowdown

1

THEY CREATE HEIGHT A dormer is a vertical window with its own roof. They offer a great opportunity to achieve headroom where it might otherwise be limited.

LEFT The couple gave their new kitchen a moderncountry look that fits with the property’s rustic-style exterior

2

THEY CAN BOOST LOFT SPACE A dormer loft conversion can be an ideal solution to a two storey extension if you can’t get planning permission.

RIGHT The garden extends right down to the River Borne, with another decking area so that the family can hang out riverside

3

DESIGN MATTERS There are lots of styles of dormer but the key is good detailed design, quality materials and a good builder.

WHAT WE’VE LEARNED

The house was off mains and we didn’t realise how long it would take and how much work would be involved to get connected to a mains gas supply. That had a knock-on effect on our already tight schedule

4

POSITIONING IS KEY Planners require dormers to be lower than the existing roof ridge. To make traditional looking dormers, you may need to place them slightly lower than halfway down the roof.

5

THEY CAN IMPACT THE INTERIOR LAYOUT Planners often require them to be set in from the walls, which can make stair positioning tricky, so careful design is crucial.

AFTER

J

ono and Maria Hey bought a two-bedroom semi-detached bungalow in 2015 with the aim of increasing the living space to accommodate their young sons. They created two new bedrooms and a bathroom on the first floor as well as adding a side extension. SPOTTING POTENTIAL

‘We’d been renting a flat in Twickenham but wanted to find an affordable family house with a garden,’ says Jono. ‘We saw a bungalow for sale in the next street. All the rooms were on the ground floor, but it had a large loft and a wide plot with huge potential.

A hip-to-gable loft conversion adds a storey, matching the next door neighbour’s property

CLEVER DESIGN

‘We were looking for an all-in-one design and build service. We chose to work with Plus Rooms,’ explains Jono. ‘They built a large dormer and installed a staircase, which is illuminated by a window over the landing. Demolishing the garage and building a side extension gave us the open-plan space we wanted.

French doors with a Juliet balcony were installed in the new first-floor guest bedroom ‘The aluminium bifold doors and 3m skylight bring in masses of natural light,’ says Jono

5 THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT…

Balconies James Bernard, director of Plus Rooms has the lowdown…

1

THEY MIGHT REQUIRE PERMISSION Most balconies or platforms higher than 300mm need it, but Juliet balconies are allowed under permitted development.

2

POSITIONING IS CRUCIAL A balcony doesn’t need to be south facing – it’s possible to build onto the east or even the north to enjoy the view. Be aware that a new balcony shouldn’t cut off light from the floor below.

3

SIZE CAN VARY Some balconies may be just large enough for a single chair, others might extend around a building – size is usually only restricted by supports.

Oak was laid over underfloor heating and a simple white kitchen was fitted

WHAT WE’VE LEARNED

We had to zone different areas in the big, open-plan kitchendiner with furniture. The island and our colourful Ikea storage bench divide the space and make it feel more homely

132

5

PRIVACY IS AN ISSUE Glass is the obvious choice for balcony balustrades, to avoid obstructing the view or cutting out light, but if the new balcony overlooks a neighbour, you may be required to add a privacy screen.

The earliest and bravest of all flowering Spring bulbs – the delicate Snowdrop – with its tiny white petals and green-tinged centres, it bursts into bloom when the weather is at its worst! With the rest of your garden decidedly dormant, this cheery, fresh-faced fellow brightens even the gloomiest looking space. Notoriously difficult to grow from the dry bulbs found in garden centres, the best way to ensure success is to plant Snowdrops while they are still in leaf – otherwise known as “In The Green”. The soil surrounding the bulbs contains a special fungus which encourages a strong and vigorous new root system. By planting in this way you can look forward to a stunning display in your garden from the very first season... and for years to come! Buy 25 Double or 50 Single Snowdrops for £14.99 each. Buy both for only £24.97 and receive 50 FREE “Glory of the Snow” worth £4.99 – SAVE £10.00! PLUS... save a further £20.00 when you buy 2 collections for just £39.94!

SIMPLE SOLUTIONS Robot vacuum

Fridge-freezer

Scout RX2, £700, Miele Miele’s new robot cleaner has a powerful motor for such a small appliance (H8.5x Dia35.4cm) and thanks to the large sweeper arms it can collect more dust, pushing it in front of the brush bar for efficiency. Combined with app-control, 60-minute battery life, seven sensors and two cameras, it can map out your house with ease.

KGN39VW35G Freestanding fridge freezer, £499, Bosch With an understated but exceptional design and an A++ energy rating, this generous 279L-capacity fridge and 87L-capacity freezer (H203xW60xD66cm) will keep your food in optimal condition thanks to two 0°C fridge drawers and totally frost-free freezing – and all at a near-silent whisper.

THE BEST BIT Better than being quiet, you can set the Scout

to clean while everyone’s out so you’ll never be disturbed by the noise of the vacuum again!

Drawer dishwasher Fisher & Paykel DD60DDFX7 dish drawer, £999, AO.com Aside from the excellent 46dB noise and A energy ratings, the dish drawer (H88xW59.9xD57.1cm) is wonderfully practical, letting you run two cycles at once, great for getting pans scrubbed and delicate glassware sparkling at the same time.

THE BEST BIT At just 39dB, this sleek fridge freezer makes no more noise than the quietest of public libraries.

EXPERT TIP

When choosing an appliance, a useful benchmark to compare it to is normal conversation, which measures about 50-60dB. Any appliance with a noise level lower than that won’t drown you out

THE BEST BIT The top drawer is at bench height making it more comfortable to load.

Air purifier

Have a quieter life with clever appliances

FEATURE CHRIS HASLAM

With open-plan living, people are more conscious of how the impact of several appliances will affect their day-to-day living space and busy lifestyles. For instance, why blast a 105 decibel hairdryer when there are equally powerful new models out now that are 30dB less? POPPY SZKILER, MD QUIET MARK

Philips AC3829/60, £549.99, John Lewis & Partners If you suffer from allergies this two-in-one air purifier and humidifier (H80xW49x D39cm) can help by cleaning the air you breathe at home. It captures up to 99.97 per cent of particles, including those as small as 0.3 microns, viruses, bacteria, pollen and dust. Plus, it won’t keep you awake at night. THE BEST BIT You can track the quality of the air in your home via the Air Matters app so you know when to turn it on.

Smart washer SupremeCare washing machine, £699, Whirlpool A great all-round choice, Whirlpool’s wi-fi connected, app-controlled, 12kg washing machine has 1400 rpm spin and a frugal A+++ rating. Its 19 different wash cycles are controlled using multiple sensors that adjust water, spin and temperature during the wash cycle to save the most energy, while still cleaning brilliantly. THE BEST BIT The clever induction motor reduces vibration when spinning, meaning it peaks at just 70dB – so it’s quiet enough

to be run overnight or early in the morning without waking up the whole house. MARCH 2019

N 70 T46FT43X0, £779, Neff Ideal for a busy family, this Neff (H5.2xW59.2xD52.2cm) has a removable magnetic control knob that not only gives you a physical dial to turn – like a gas hob – but can be removed making the hob completely safe if you have children. THE BEST BIT The four variable temperature zones (1.8-3.7kW), 17 levels and double-quick boiling boost. Sleek and stylish, induction hobs complement a modern kitchen

Induction only works with magnetic materials, so unless your pans are cast-iron or 18/10 stainless-steel, you’ll have to go shopping!

Should you swap gas for induction? These hobs provide heat that’s fast, safe (it only comes on when the pan touches the surface) and clean; they look sleek and some have timers and even built-in extraction. No wonder they’ve leapfrogged gas at the luxury end of the market!

SmartCook induction hob SMP 778/C/NE/IXL, £999, Whirlpool This hi-tech hob (H5.4xW77x D51cm) has 63 cooking settings that takes the guesswork out of cooking, with the large digital display showing step-by-step instructions for your food prep! estled in the middle of the South Downs National Park is the stunning Cowdray Estate. The 16,500-acre estate includes the ruins of Cowdray Heritage – an early Tudor house steeped in history and visited by both King Henry VIII and Queen Elizabeth I, before being largely destroyed by fire in 1793. With polo lawns, a farm shop and café, and beautiful holiday homes, the estate is an ideal bolthole for enjoying a country break. There are four recently redeveloped holiday cottages

on offer, and our favourite is the spacious two-bedroom Broomhill, featuring a sleekly refurbished open-plan kitchen and living area, as well as a lovely terrace with a barbecue looking out towards the picturesque Benbow Pond, a great sundowner spot. Guests are given free entry to the famed Cowdray polo matches as well as a welcome breakfast pack. The Farm Shop and Café is a lovely alternative to cooking your own lunch. Takes 1hr, plus setting Serves 12 INGREDIENTS FOR THE BASE 20g unsalted butter 35g soft toffees 40g marshmallows 1tbsp cocoa powder 60g crisped rice cereal 125g crunchy peanut butter FOR THE NOUGAT 550g caster sugar 140g liquid glucose 3 egg whites 250g mixed nuts FOR THE GLAZE 100g dark chocolate, finely chopped 2tbsp golden syrup 25g unsalted butter, cubed Edible gold leaf (optional)

1 Slowly melt the butter and toffees in

a saucepan, mix in the marshmallows and cocoa powder until melted. Stir in the crisped rice and spread over the base of a 23cm greased springform tin. Leave to firm up for 15min. Spread over the peanut butter.

2 For the nougat, heat 525g of the

sugar and the liquid glucose with 175ml water in a saucepan over a low heat until dissolved, around 5-7min. Place the egg whites in the bowl of an electric mixer, but don’t mix just yet.

3 Turn up the heat for the glucose

mixture. Put a sugar thermometer in the pan and when it reaches 100°C, slowly start to whisk the egg whites until they become foamy. Turn the speed up and mix until stiff peaks form. Mix the remaining sugar into the egg whites in two additions. Once the glucose mix gets to 125°C, pour into the egg mixture in a slow stream, while whisking on a medium-high speed. Mix for 5min on a medium speed after all the syrup has been added. Stir in the nuts and pour into the tin covering the crisped rice base. Leave to set for 4hr in a cool place.

4 For the glaze, put all the ingredients (except the gold leaf) and 60ml water into a heatproof bowl set over a pan of gently simmering water. Once melted, remove from the heat and whisk until smooth (but don’t over mix!). Allow to cool slightly and thicken for 5-10min. Run a sharp knife around the edge of the tart and remove from the tin, pour the glaze over the tart and leave to set in a cool and dry place for 2hr before serving. Finish with gold leaf.

2 Bake the cake for 35-40min, until

golden brown and firm to the touch in the centre. A skewer inserted into the middle of the cake should come out cleanly. If not, bake for a few min more. Cool in the tin for 10min, then turn out, upside down, on a wire rack.

3 When the cake is completely cold,

spread the tops (the flat bottom of the cake) with apricot jam. Dust a work surface with icing sugar and roll out the marzipan very thinly; place on top of the cake, trimming it to fit. Cut the cake into 4cm strips and cut each strip into 4cm squares to give you 25 cakes.

4 Make some butter cream by mixing the butter and icing sugar together

with a drop of boiling water to create a smooth, spreadable icing. Cover the four sides (but not the top) of each cube with butter cream as neatly as you can – this will make sure that the fondant icing looks smooth when poured over later. Chill the cakes for 30min.

5 Sieve the fondant icing sugar into a

bowl and add just enough water to give a thick pouring consistency (it should coat the back of a wooden spoon thickly). Divide the icing into two bowls and add a colouring to each.

Scrape into a loose-bottomed tin (20cm or 14cm, base and side greased and lined with parchment). Bake until springy to the touch. It will depend on how many cakes are in the oven at a time but the 14cm cake should take 1hr and the 20cm cakes 1hr 15min. Allow to cool in the tin then set aside on a wire rack to cool completely.

Chop around ¾ of the strawberries, saving the smaller ones to decorate.

6 Spread a thin layer of the buttercream

over the cut side of one of the 20cm sponges. Fill the piping bag with the buttercream and with a 0.5cm round nozzle, pipe a neat border around the edge. Fill the inside with strawberries level to the piped cream border, fill in any gaps with buttercream. Top with the other half of the sponge. Repeat with the other 20cm sponges.

7 Add a little buttercream to the

centre of the cake and top with the upper half of the 14cm sponge. Spread a thin layer of the buttercream over the top, then equally space five of the strawberries around the edge of the sponge, tip facing outwards. Trim the under sides slightly to flatten so they stay in place. Pipe the buttercream so it weaves in and out of the strawberries, fill the middle with more buttercream. A SPACE OF MY OWN

‘This room is my private hideaway’

Rachel Buchanan claimed the spare room for doing and keeping all the things she loves, away from the busyness of work and mum duties

Surrounded by her favourite things, Rachel loves this room

Paintings by Rachel’s grandfather adorn the walls

cabinets built by my father-in-law. My grandfather was an artist and some of his paintings (which my husband isn’t mad keen on!) are on the walls. There’s one of a Wiltshire village that used to hang in my grandparents’ home. I like all of that history. My husband prefers a minimalist, clutter-free life, and doesn’t collect ‘stuff’ like I do. I just wanted to be able to have a desk which no one would touch where I could do the things that I like doing – writing (my blog, thelittlepip.com), crafting and photography. It isn’t just for work; it’s a space for me as a person, not just me as a wife and mother. Before I had my daughter I was a lawyer and, although I went back to corporate life for a bit, I quit when my son was a year old. I felt like my identity had to be rebuilt – and I’m still working it out. My room is part of that. My children know this is my room and always ask before they come in. I wanted it to feel cosy and familiar. Everything in it is inherited. I use my great-grandmother’s dressing table as a desk; there’s a G-Plan table, sideboard and bookcase from my grandparents; a vintage filing cabinet from my lawyer days and
