El Jinete Azul es el título de un cuadro que el pintor ruso Vasili Kandinsky realizó en 1903, pero también es el nombre de una publicación, El almanaque de El Jinete Azul, redactado por él y por Franz Marc, y verdadero manifiesto de aquellos artistas que constituían uno de los grupos de creadores de la vanguardia europea. Junto a ellos, August Macke fue el encargado de la documentación etnográfica del Almanaque, en el que aparecieron trabajos de los pintores Max Pechstein, Alfred Kubin y Henri Le Fauconnier, y del músico Arnold Schönberg. El almanaque de El Jinete Azul se publicó en 1912, el mismo año que el libro De lo espiritual en el arte, texto de reflexión sobre el acto creativo y sobre el sentido de la pintura.

La Primera Guerra Mundial (1914-1918) impidió que una segunda entrega de este almanaque pudiera publicarse, aun así, hoy en día sigue constituyendo uno de los textos decisivos en el pensamiento artístico del siglo XX. En homenaje a todos ellos, especialmente al maestro ruso, profesor años más tarde de la Escuela de Bauhaus, esta pequeña editorial se llama El Jinete Azul, y este libro El almanaque infantil de El Jinete Azul. Y lo adjetivamos infantil porque los libros que en este sello se publicarán serán también para niños. Decía Michel Tournier que la buena literatura es aquella que también la pueden entender los pequeños. Quizá a estas alturas esto no sea del todo cierto, pero la realidad es que esta editorial nace con esa intención; probablemente después la realidad

se encargará de barajar las cartas de manera imprevisible. Sea como fuere, sepan ustedes que esa es una de nuestras señas de identidad. Y junto a ella, una cierta vocación de estilo —eso que se aparece en el camino y con la práctica, como dicen los poetas—, en la selección y el tratamiento de las obras. La mayoría de nuestros libros serán de producción nacional, de aquellos escritores e ilustradores con cuyo trabajo nos identificamos y nos sentimos cómodos. Y por otro lado, también editaremos obras ya publicadas en editoriales extranjeras, que consideremos de interés para los lectores de español, de una orilla y de la otra de este océano que atravesaremos con un puente de palabras. Por último, es nuestra intención, también, recuperar obras

clásicas de escritores e ilustradores que crearon estos libros con intención o no de dirigirlos al público infantil, pero que los pequeños lectores se apropiaron de ellos con el paso del tiempo. Algunos de ellos aún incomprensiblemente inéditos, otros ya publicados, pero invisibles en la actualidad. Este almanaque no es ni un manifiesto ni una proclama al estilo de los textos fundacionales de las vanguardias, es una declaración de intenciones y un gesto de agradecimiento hacia todos los que han hecho posible que así sea —tal y como lo tienen ustedes ahora en sus manos—, y sea en este momento. Sin la colaboración generosa y desinteresada de todos los ilustradores que aquí aparecen, este libro inaugural no habría existido. Vaya nuestra gratitud y nuestra estima por todos

The First World War (1914-1918) prevented the publication of the second issue of this almanac, but even so it remains one of the decisive texts in artistic thought of the twentieth century. In homage to all of them, but particularly to the Russian maestro, years later a teacher in the Bauhaus School, this small publishing house is called The Blue Rider and this book, The Children’s Almanac of the Blue Rider. We have given it the adjective «children’s» because the books which will be published with this brand name will also be for children. Michel Tournier said that good literature is literature which the small ones can also understand. Perhaps at this point this is not completely true but the reality is that this company starts out with this intention; it’s more than likely that reality will deal the cards randomly.

Be that as it may, let it be known that that is one of our symbols by which we will be known. And together with it, we have a certain vocation for style – which appears on the way and with practice as the poets have it, in the selection and treatment of the works. The majority of our books will be produced here in Spain, by those writers and illustrators whose work we identify with and with whom we feel comfortable. On the other hand, we will also publish works previously issued by foreign publishers, but which we consider of interest to Spanish readers, from this side or the other side of the pond which we will bridge with words. Finally, it is also our intention to rediscover classics by writers and illustrators who created these books with or without the intention of being read by a youthful public, because young readers have taken charge of them with

the passing of time. Some of them have incomprehensibly never been published before, others already published but not visible at the moment. This almanac is neither a manifesto nor is it a proclamation in the style of these foundational texts of the avant-garde, it is a declaration of intent and a gesture of gratitude to all those who have made it possible – just as you have it now in your hands. Without the unselfish, disinterested collaboration of all the illustrators who appear here, this inaugural book could not have come into being. Our greatest thanks and respect to all of them.
