Soon Tara would find out that Miranda had been searching for years as well. "This day was like the day she was born, only she walked into my arms instead of the doctor hand-

ing her to me." Tara said through her tears. "Never give up hope. Even in the darkest hours, hang on to every ounce of hope you can muster up because Miranda is proof of that." Mother and daughter talk through text or facetime everyday and are hoping to plan another trip closer to Christmas. There are three distinct kidnapping categories: abduction by a relative, (49% - usually a parent involved in a custody dispute); by an acquaintance (27%), and by a stranger (24%). While abduction by a stranger is the most dangerous form of kidnapping, more kids are taken and harmed by friends or acquaintances. Further, a child or teen’s concept of what constitutes a “stranger” is different from that of an adult, which can lead to confusion – and mixed messages - for the child. Therefore

the most important safety message to teach kids is not so much who to avoid, but how to identify potentially dangerous situations and know what to do. According to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children, in an analysis of more than 8,000 attempted abductions, 83% of those abductions failed because the intended victim actively tried to escape the situation or resist the would-be abductor by walking, running or pulling away; yelling; kicking or otherwise attracting attention.
