Capital Caring Capital Caring has been providing expert end-of-life care to hospice patients and their families in the national capital region since 1977. It is one of the oldest and largest non-profit hospices in the nation. We have more physicians, nurses, and nursing assistants certified in hospice and palliative care than any other in the Mid-Atlantic region and one of the few who serve patients of any age. We strive to provide the best care for terminally ill patients in their homes, facilities and in-patient units. Our mission is to simply improve care for those facing lifelimiting illness through direct support of patients and their families, public education and advocacy. We provide assistance to all that need it, regardless of their ability to pay. City Of Alexandria Workforce Development Center The Workforce Development Center (WDC) is a certified one-stop public workforce system designed to connect businesses and job seekers. The WDC addresses skill needs in a demand-driven labor market and focuses on the needs of businesses by preparing job seekers through education, training and career counseling. Fairfax CASA The mission of Fairfax Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) is to advocate for the best interests of each abused and neglected child referred by the Fairfax County Juvenile & Domestic Relations District Court through the promotion and support of quality volunteer representation. We seek to ensure that each child’s needs are identified and addressed with the goal of living in a safe and permanent home. Every child deserves a safe and loving home. Our vision is to recruit, train and supervise enough highly qualified and committed citizens to provide a strong advocate, a CASA volunteer, for each child under the Court’s protection. CASA volunteers are a child’s best hope for a positive future. CASA Volunteer: -Advocate for the best interests of an abused/neglected child. -Visit children on their cases twice a month and interview social workers, therapists, teachers and other professionals, gathering information to report back to court in the form of a written court report. -Attend all hearings for the assigned case. Food For Others Our Mission is to distribute free food to our neighbors in need, in partnership with our Northern Virginia community, and to provide opportunities for people to volunteer their resources. Neighbors in need of free food in Northern Virginia, which includes: Arlington, Fairfax, Loudoun and Prince William Counties, plus the Cities of Alexandria and Falls Church. Volunteer Opportunities: At our warehouse: Prepare food to be distributed to clients, Distribute food to clients, sort donations, inspect power packs before delivery, assist with client intake at the front desk, general office assistance. Food Salvaging: Picking up donations from local grocery stores or farmers markets, distribute food at a neighborhood site Power Pack Program: (P3) allows FFO to provide a pack of food to elementary school-aged students so they have something to eat over the weekend. Officemates, friends and family can help by donating prepared packs to FFO or serve a school directly! Emergency Referral Program (ERP) provides families with a 3 to 5 day supply of food. You can run a food drive, donate prepared boxes for FFO to distribute to clients, or donate much needed clean cardboard boxes! Goodwin House The mission of Goodwin House Incorporated is to support, honor and uplift the lives of older adults and the people who care for them through a faith-based, nonprofit organization affiliated with the Episcopal Church. We primarily serve the aging population in Alexandria VA. Volunteer Opportunities: Creative Arts Volunteer: Position is designed to enrich the residents’ creative experiences. Volunteers assist staff in executing creative arts programming including, but not limited to, painting, drawing, drama, music, movement and crafts. Elder Companion: The role of the Elder Companion is to reduce the residents’ sense of isolation by helping to keep the senior connected with the community and outside world. The goal is to assist individuals in maintaining feelings of independence and self-worth and, through weekly visits, increase their social contacts. Life Enrichment Volunteer: The role of the Life Enrichment volunteer is to assist our residents on our Health Care Units with participating in daily recreational activities- time slips, bingo etc. Low Vision Volunteer: The role of the Low Vision volunteer is to assist our low vision residents with daily tasks. Tasks may include rolling a ball of yarn, helping to sew on buttons, assist with reading, mailing letters, etc. Media Resource Volunteer: The role of the Media Resource volunteer is to assist our residents with their gadgets like IPads, printers, Kindles, etc. Volunteers in this position provide one to two hours a week of volunteer services. * HIGH DEMAND* Contact: Lakea C. Habitat for Humanity Northern Virginia Habitat for Humanity of Northern Virginia (Habitat NOVA)’s mission is to bring communities together to build decent, affordable housing – and provide hope – for people in need. Habitat NOVA provides a “hand up” to home ownership through sweat equity, donor generosity, volunteer labor and interest free mortgages. Not only do our homeowners work on their own homes but they attend financial management classes to help them to prepare for homeownership. We are a locally chartered, self-sustaining and independently operated affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International. Founded in 1990, we are headquartered in Alexandria, Virginia, and serve the counties of Arlington and Fairfax as well as the cities of Alexandria, Fairfax and Falls Church. Volunteer Opportunities: ReStore: Take donated household items and sells them to help support our mission. This is an opportunity for individuals and groups to volunteer and we have two locations (Alexandria and Chantilly). Hispanics Against Child Abuse and Neglect (HACAN Hispanics Against Child Abuse and Neglect – HACAN is a non-profit organization formed in 1985 to assist local agencies with the prevention of child abuse and neglect. Humane Society of Fairfax County The Humane Society of Fairfax County (www.hsfc.org) is the largest and oldest animal rescue in the area. We provide loving, forever home to animals that we care for that have been given up, abandoned or left homeless. We have two locations – one in Fairfax City and another in Centerville, VA. At the Fairfax City location we care for our cats and small mammals. Our Thrift Store is also located here. At the Centerville Farm we care for our dogs and horses. After attendance at an orientation, volunteers can schedule the days and times they want to volunteer. Every hour spent playing with the animals is time spent enriching their days. Thank you for considering volunteering with the Humane Society. We serve the local Virginia and Washington DC area. INMED Partnerships for Children The mission of INMED Partnerships for Children is to rescue children from the immediate and irreversible harm of disease, hunger, abuse, neglect, violence or instability, and to prepare them to shape a brighter future for themselves and the next generation. Our new Family and Youth Opportunity Center located in Sterling, VA will serve families and youth in Loudoun County and the surrounding areas through after school programming, parent education groups, ESL classes, job readiness, and other services to help meet the critical needs of these local families. Volunteer Opportunities: Facilitating and assisting the after school and summer programs for elementary-aged youth, providing child care during parent classes, facilitating programming that may involve job skills, cooking, wellness and nutrition, or computer skills, and assisting with special events and ancillary services. Linden Resources Inc . Linden Resources is a Crystal City-based non-profit organization serving people with disabilities and wounded veterans in the northern VA area for over 55 years. We provide meaningful employment within our own service lines, like our shredding and print services. In addition to employment services, we seek to provide educational opportunities and community engagement projects for our supported employees with disabilities. Starting in January 1st: 1) Guest speakers to speak about their chosen profession. About the position, how they got there, what type of education/experience is needed, etc. This is a one-time volunteer opportunity. 2) Volunteers to teach a particular set of skills- financial literacy, ESL, reading, computer, anything that would be valuable to our folks. I’m particularly looking for individuals who may be able to teach art/music therapy. This would be weekly for an hour or two. Volunteers to help with garden club, maybe once a week for a few hours. National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) OUR MISSION: Our mission, as individuals, family members and friends affected by mental health conditions, is to serve our community through education, support and advocacy. OUR VISION: A world where everyone affected by a mental health condition has a place to turn for help, hope and support. NAMI Northern Virginia and its volunteers work together to raise awareness and provide education, advocacy, and support programs for people living with a mental health condition, family members and friends, students, educators, law enforcement, and the public; programs are provided at no cost to participants. Northern Virginia Family Service (NVFS) Northern Virginia Family Service (NVFS)’s is dedicated to helping individuals and families find new paths to self-reliance and brighter futures. The NVFS mission is to enable families and individuals to improve their quality of life and to promote community cooperation and support in responding to family needs. Skill Source (VITA) The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program is a national program sponsored by the IRS. VITA is implemented in the Northern Virginia area by Fairfax, Loudoun and Prince William County Governments and various community organizations. Together, we make up a coalition called NVACASH – the Northern Virginia coalition for Creating Assets, Savings and Hope. Each tax season, VITA volunteers all over the country prepare federal and state tax returns for low-income families in public libraries and community centers, and on college campuses. Here, in Northern Virginia, over 300 NVACASH-VITA volunteers staff various locations throughout Alexandria, Arlington, Fairfax, Fauquier, Loudoun and Prince William Counties. A Wider Circle Since their Inception in 2001, A Wider Circle has provided basic need items and educational workshops to more than 150,000 individuals and families. As we continue to fulfill our mission to go where the needs are greatest, A Wider Circle recently opened its arms and its doors onsite at Barry Farm in Southeast DC, a neighborhood where 100% of the residents live in deep poverty. This new project is the first of our Comprehensive Neighborhood Support (CNS) initiatives. The CNS program will be a major focus of our work going forward.

Wright to Read Wright to Read provides volunteer-based one-on-one sustained literacy tutoring & mentoring relationships to City of Alexandria elementary school children in need, and collaborates with families, schools and community partners to create a comprehensive support network that guides each child to success. We serve students in grades 1-5 who are reading one year below grade level.
Volunteer Opportunities: Tutor/Mentor Program We are recruiting for our Tutor/Mentor Program. Volunteers are paired with an elementary school student to help improve his/her literacy by reading books and working on different comprehension activities. Tutoring is typically done at the public library after work or on the weekends once a week for an hour. This program requires volunteers to attend an Orientation and a separate Training as well as undergo a criminal background screening. The screening process may take up to two months to process. Assessment Team We are also recruiting for our Assessment Team. As an Assessment Team member, you would have the opportunity to learn how to administer the DRA2 (Direct Reading Assessment Second Edition, by Pearson). You would be expected to come to Assessment Team meetings, which we try to quarterly unless something comes up. After training, you would then be given (or we collaborate and choose) about 5-6 students to whom you will administer the DRA2 assessment. You will be responsible for contacting their tutor/mentors to schedule the assessment, performing the assessment at Wright to Read or at a local library, and then writing up your results. During the student's first year, the first assessment is given a few weeks after the tutor/mentor begins work with their student (certainly in the first month). Then, you will give the assessment again in the spring of that year or at least 6 months after the first assessment is given (we are a year round rotating program so all students will not begin with us in the Fall).
