Elisa Contemporary Art will be featuring several distinct walls at the Spring 2016 Affordable Art Fair.

In Booth 1.15, we’ll be featuring a Black & White artwork section with the work of California artist, Stephanie Cate, Equestrian Artist, Ken Peloke and the smoke and wind photography of Wind Flow Photographers, Candace Wark and Shirley Nannini. Here’s a look at that section & featured artists:

About Stephanie Cate Stephanie Cate is an abstract painter based out of Los Angeles, California. She spent most of her childhood in France, before relocating to Los Angeles, California at fourteen. She spent a couple of years as an apprentice for a muralist in Santa Monica, painting large scale murals for casinos in Las Vegas and private residences before she decided to pursue her own artistic path.

She attended Massachusetts College of Art and Design in Boston, receiving a BFA in painting. Being surrounded by the history and architecture of France as a child and the grand decaying beauty of former centuries left an early impression on her that still influences her work to this day.

After working for over a decade in a photographic based mixed-media process, Stephanie returned to her original love of pure abstraction to delve in further and reconnect with freshness and liberation of texture, line, shape and color.

Stephanie's work is in public and private collections including Kelly Wearstler, Renee Zellweger, Annabeth Gish, Mr. Avi Amiel (President, Art Collector International Magazine), Rasa Center for Yoga (Oregon) and Wynn Tower Suites (Las Vegas) Artist Statement: I was born into a colorful family of writers, musicians and artists. At an early age I knew that expression and creativity would also be my path. Coming from a family that relocated often, I found consistency and stability in my internal artistic world. It was not only a need but a refuge for me, to be able to have a certain creative outlet, within the constant uncertainty of my upbringing. This theme has followed me into my adult artistic process. When I begin a piece I start with a general mood or emotion I want to convey but the journey is of great interest to me so I always give way to that and let the work take over and direct me. The end result is always an unexpected discovery that I take joy in. The subconscious for me, is a strong guide to the act of emoting.

I work intuitively, trusting the process and its’ direction. I paint to get down to the essence of a relationship between the forms and lines, where two edges meet. Magic and mystery happen there and I feel compelled to explore it. Layers of texture, veils of color and shapes interconnecting, ambiguous space, the dance between the bold gestural stroke, polarities and the fragile veiled shadows create a dialogue of tension, sensuality and contemplation.

My hope is that the interconnectedness of the forms and the layered shadows that emerge create an atmospheric landscape that the viewer can enjoy getting lost in and make their own personal discoveries within them.

About Wind Flow Photographers, Candace Wark and Shirley Nannini: "Our intent is to move away from representational photography and embark on an examination of more abstract shapes and forms. Our art looks at an ever changing dynamic of patterns that evolve and move. We are exploring interactions of wind and light by using an innovative approach to capture the essence of wind movement and convey its transient nature. Smoke is introduced into a wind tunnel and allowed to flow over various objects. As the wind and smoke interact, ethereal patterns are created in the wake as a result of the intrinsic laws of nature. These patterns owe their form to many factors including the speed of the wind, the shape of the object and the evolution of the coherent fluid patterns. With these images we seek to draw the observer into an evolving, dynamic view of art and nature."

Their limited edition photographs have been solo and group shows throughout the United States since 2013.

About Equestrian artist, Ken Peloke: Ken Peloke’s photorealistic mixed media horse paintings were inspired by the time he spent with his wife’s horses. Ken discovered their beauty, their athleticism, and their innocence. His bold, large-scale pieces capture the pure essence of each horse – the beauty, nobility and power. His multimedia approach creates depth and incredible realism to his pieces that give them a one of a kind contemporary appeal.

According to Ken, “There is such an honesty and purity that is felt while spending time with our horse, as an artist I feel compelled to try to relay those same emotions to the viewers through my work.”

Although born in rural New York, Ken has lived in Arizona since he was 9. Ken's work has been featured in Western Art Collector, Western Art & Architecture and is in Public and Private Collections across the US including New York, San Francisco, Jackson Hole, Miami, Scottsdale and Sun Valley.

Our Abstracted and Industrial Landscape section will include artwork by Canadian Artist, Marie Danielle Leblanc and Armenian-American Artist, Ferdinanda Florence About Marie Danielle Leblanc Canadian artist, Marie Danielle Leblanc, was born in Trois-Rivières (Quebec) and has lived and worked in Montreal (Quebec) since 1990. Her paintings transform landscapes into poetic worlds. Her deeply saturated palettes bring new life to the sea, land and sky. And she transports her viewers to timeless and imaginary landscapes.

During her travels, she likes to write down her thoughts, make a note of the weather or the name of a place, take pictures and collect images. Leblanc’s travel diary is an ideal instrument for her. Whether she is driving on the highway or in the open country, walking on never-ending beaches or rocks stroked by the sea, it is through her travels that the artist captures landscapes that stretch into the vista.

She has participated in twenty solo exhibitions, and more than fifty group exhibitions. Her work has also been shown throughout Canada and in Paris, Sydney, Mexico and Tokyo.

This series was inspired by her two month Trek in Nepal in 2014 and our exhibit opened the day of the first devastating earthquake. A portion of all sales from this exhibit will be donated to Nepal quake relief efforts.

About Ferdinanda Florence: Ferdinanda Florence was born in Washington, DC, and grew up in Arlington, VA. A second-generation Armenian-America, Ferdinanda has explored in her research the role of place in artistic expression. Her Master’s thesis detailed the link between Armenian religious rituals and church architecture. In her travel to sites in France, Italy, and Germany, she has researched the symbolism of doorway and floor decoration in Romanesque buildings. In her artwork, she uses industrial sites in her home city of Vallejo to explore issues of place on a more personal level.

Ferdinanda’s exhibitions reflect her varied interests and concerns. Her work has appeared at the Di Rosa Preserve, Napa (“All in the Family IV,” 2005); the University of San Francisco Law School (“Creative Justice: A Social Art Exhibit,” 2005); and as set decoration for a Bay Area Playwrights Festival performance at the Magic Theater, San Francisco (“As American As,” 2006). Her drawings were selected for exhibition at the next FATE Biennial Conference at the Savannah College of Art and Design in April, 2013.

We will also be debuting just completed layered birch artwork by Texas Artist, Mitch McGee The influences for McGee's own artwork came from the style of Pop Art legend, Roy Lichtenstein.

According to McGee, "Lichtenstein with a Red Bow was the first piece that started me down this rabbit hole. Roy Lichtenstein took comic strips and repositioned them as lithography. In an almost tongue-in-cheek fashion I wondered how I could take one of his pieces and recreate it in another medium. The easy answer for me was wood. I grew up working with it and, combined with my graphic design background, it left me with a new medium and expression that I think really works."

From that start, McGee began to create his own style and establish his unique voice.

Today, his creativity exists in that space between painting and sculpture. In his Birch series, McGee uses pieces of wood, each illustrated, hand cut and stained or painted to create dimensional pieces. Each painting is filled with thick layers and subtle shadows. There is a warmth created by the imperfection of the birch and its grain that creates an emotional connection.

Each painting is a labor of love, taking 40 to 50 hours or more to complete.

McGee has created original works inspired by Superhero comics, Sports icons, as well as romantic moments using thick lines and bold colors to bring these scenes to life in his own way. Each artwork is filled with humor, irony, compassion or seduction.

His artwork has been exhibited throughout Texas since 2001 and in New York with Elisa Contemporary Art since 2012. His work is public and private collections throughout the world including TV journalist Serena Altschul. In 2013, Mitch McGee’s artwork was featured in the March issue of Dwell Magazine, in W Magazine in October, and a solo exhibit at 1st Dibs.

Our Tribute to Super Heroes section will include artwork by Texas Artist, Mitch McGee, Comic Book Constructionist Don Morris and Mixed Media artist, Oliver Peterson.

Oliver Peterson will be leading a very special "Super-Hero" art workshop for kids on Saturday April 2nd from 11:30-12:30pm. Admission will be $10 per child with all proceeds benefiting Art Therapy Outreach Center.

About Oliver Peterson Watermill resident Oliver Peterson reveres the bucolic nature of his hometown, but finds inspiration in the unlikeliest of places. Graffiti, structural decay, the pop zeitgeist, literature, politics, history, and his personal experience drive the artist’s work to challenging places one might not associate with the East End’s beaches and bountiful reputation. Peterson’s paintings are very much about the media from which they are built. The artist frequently experiments with paint and patinas and often applies random studio detritus to compositions that have been described as energetic, complex, dark, and even gentle.

Since late 2005, Peterson has embarked on developing his ongoing series of mixed media work and he recently began exploring modern heroic figures cut from the pages of comic books and other sources. Pieces often contain burlap culled from the large bags used for coffee beans, as well as other fabrics.

Oliver was born in New York and received his BFA from the School of Visual Arts.

He has exhibited his work in exhibits since 2006.

About Don Morris Don Morris was born in New Orleans, Louisiana in 1935. After finishing his undergraduate work at Tulane, he obtained his doctorate degree at Louisiana State University.

Morris began his art career in earnest upon retiring from plastic surgery in 2002. His constructions embody the creative and manual elements of his former medical practice, and the comic book medium allows him to incorporate the psychological side of the plastic surgery process. The uniformly undulating surface of gentle peaks and curves in the folds of the comic book pages capture the viewer with a story as they unfold. From a distance, one sees the interplay of colors and texture; up close, the superheroes fly, struggle, and climb in small fragments and vignettes. The expressive faces of the characters show all the emotion of the human psyche, and word bubbles create dialogue between the action heroes. The compilation of thousands of comic book sections form constructions ranging from four to eight feet tall, leaving viewers with an unforgettable image of energetic architectural elements in a distinctive, physical composition.

Morris has taken the iconic comic book of our youth, reduced it to narrow strips and bands, and re-invented it into a mass of bright color and texture. In a very short time from entering the art world, Morris has seen a meteoric rise in his prominence as an artist. His comic book constructions are found in museums and significant collections in the United States, Europe, and Asia.
