ack is a mouse who lives in the country. He’s very happy today because his best friend, Alfred, is coming to lunch. Alfred is a town mouse.

Jack and Alfred are very different. Jack loves the country. He lives in the fields. He doesn’t live in a house. Life is simple. He likes living outside.

Jack eats fruit and green grass. And there’s always clean water in the fountain. There are no cars in the country. Jack can run and play because it’s safe and quiet.

Alfred wants to see Jack’s house. But Jack hasn’t got a house. He lives outside! Alfred doesn’t understand. ‘You haven’t got a bedroom! You haven’t got a kitchen! My home in the town is better!’ says Alfred.

4 It’s lunchtime. But Alfred doesn’t understand.
‘Excuse me, Jack. Where’s the restaurant?’ asks Alfred. ‘Oh no, Alfred. There isn’t a restaurant here,’ says Jack. ‘That’s alright. We can go to a restaurant by bus,’ says Alfred. ‘Oh no, Alfred. We don’t need a restaurant. We can eat here in the fields,’ says Jack.

Alfred follows Jack. Alfred likes picnics. Jack sits on the grass and Alfred sits next to Jack. But where’s the food? Alfred looks left, then right, but there’s no food! ‘What are we going to eat?’ asks Alfred.

5 Jack, the country mouse, gives Alfred green grass
to eat. But Alfred is a town mouse. He doesn’t like grass! In the town there’s lots of good food to eat. ‘Jack, the food in the town is better!’ says Alfred. ‘Really? I like the food in the country. I’m happy here,’ says the country mouse.

Make two masks. Then use the masks to act out the story. 1 Take a piece of grey cardboard. Draw a large circle, the size of your face.
You need • cardboard • a pencil • scissors • glue • a black felt-tip pen • elastic 2 Cut out.
3 Add two circles to make the ears.

4 Draw two semi-circles in the ears.
5 Draw two eyes and a big black nose. Draw the whiskers.
6 Fold the bottom of the circle under the nose. Then cut out the mask and cut out two holes for the eyes.
7 Make two small holes. Put elastic through the holes and tie.
Your masks are ready!
You can make two masks. One for the town mouse and one for the country mouse. Use different colours for the two masks. 25
