CURRICULUM VITAE

ABOUT ME.

002

I am an architect based in Ankara, having completed my Master’s studies at Bilkent University, Turkey. Throughout my architectural journey, my primary goal has been to discover my unique architectural identity by constantly questioning the delicate balance between form and function, particularly at the urban and architectural scale, in collaboration with emerging technologies and advancements. I strongly believe that architecture serves as a potent tool for challenging the possibilities within historical and social contexts, allowing for their transformation and evolution. The process of shaping spaces and its role in establishing identity greatly intrigues me. In addition to my academic achievements, I am driven by the desire to experiment with design and conceptual creation, aligning with 21st-century social and environmental approaches. I am committed to enhancing my technical expertise and communication skills through diverse interactions and experiences.

PUBLIC SPACE DESIGN COMPETITION BY the Municipality of Casagiove JULY-AUGUST 2023 CASERTA | ITALY PROFESSIONAL WORK AT 2A+P/A Associates

The project site, situated at the core of historically and culturally significant settlements identified by the Municipal Urban Plan, holds strategic importance in enhancing accessibility, utilization, and the provision of new services for Casagiove’s residents. The area, primarily developed and bearing the imprints of ancient settlements, seeks urban revitalization. The proposed urban redevelopment project aims to amplify the unique features of these settlements through targeted actions focusing on enhancing, upgrading, and integrating its natural, agricultural, cultural, and historical-archaeological elements. Aligned with the existing urban layout, the new project areas follow the patterns characteristic of the neighborhoods, streets, and preexisting green spaces. These design patterns are deeply rooted in Roman centuriation, underlined by elements inspired by the Villa Reale’s natural design. The project is articulated through a series of bands that define the characteristics and functions of the new square. The different areas are characterized by new trees, shrubs, urban furnishings, and play areas.

View of the Kiosk Area from the Playgrounds

New Public Space and Connectivity in Caserta. The new garden square is designed so that the adjacent city areas can interact: it has no physical perimetric boundaries. The colonnade serves as a guiding and mediating element with the forms of the context, ensuring accessibility and passage through the space in various weather conditions, from autumn rains to strong summer sun. Besides enabling movement across different parts of the city, the colonnade contributes to building the spatial identity necessary for identifying a public space for a community. The colonnade is, in fact, one of the elements that most distinctly characterize the landscape of Italian cities. This design approach transforms the intervention into a place for gathering, meeting, and socializing, giving back to the city the central hub for its social activities. The study of color defines a palette where the natural elements of the citrus grove and Mediterranean essences that define the square’s landscape blend with the cladding materials in shades of red, blue, green, and orange.

Materials and Environmental Sustainability:

View of the Kiosk Area from the Citrus Square

The selected materials are primarily of natural and local origin to enhance sustainability. Sustainable materials with different permeability degrees, rainwater collection systems, and photovoltaic panels form a strategy to make the project resilient to increasingly unpredictable weather events, making the management and maintenance of the square as sustainable and economical as possible. The proposed solution aims to create an architectural intervention of significant value, where the morphological, structural, and material choices meet precise aesthetic, functional, constructive, and technological requirements. At the same time, the design seeks the best performance in terms of energy efficiency and environmental compatibility. Main environmental factors such as exposure, orientation, prevailing winds, and average precipitation were analyzed. Based on these parameters, the principles of environmental design were pursued to reduce consumption, promote the use of renewable energies, and mitigate the effects of climate change. As in the Gardens of Delights of the nearby Royal Palace of Caserta, the citrus square could form an edible landscape, that is, the cultivation of food and fruit plants for aesthetic and landscape purposes in synergy with classic ornamental plants. The kiosk planned in the public square might also consider in its offerings products from the garden’s citrus fruits.

FUTURE HOUSING AND WORKSPACE DESIGN SPRING 2020 _ undergrad thesıs project downtown, marina bay | SINGAPORE INDIVIDUAL WORK

NARRATIVE

What if future housing and workspace for digital nomads are based on moveable and transformable space sharing? The boundaries between workspace and living space have become blurred. Offices increasingly resemble a home. While, work has transformed from ‘a place to go’, to ‘a thing to do’. The design investigates ways of creating a hybrid structure of a house and a workspace for digital nomads based in the distant future, 2030. The Nomad House is an urban typology derived from an alternative modular building framework, where most of the building parts and materials can be disassembled and removed, reused and recycled throughout the lifespan of the building. Units work in a gridal system that all the modules are digitally pre-fabricated using computer numerically controlled technology. This model discusses how the technology, people and nature will interact in the future. The creative hubs and working spaces for digital nomads are examples of flexible future proofed office, because the design can fit more staff or more servers based on unexpected needs. These free plan designed flexible spaces and equipment allow individuals and groups to share ideas anywhere and anytime. The standard unit contains flexible walls that enable movability and transformability to living spaces. It is possible to separate dining, sleeping and playing areas in the time of need.

MODULAR compatible with “constant migration” trends. VISIONARY futuristic and evolving with time. COMMUNITY having communal spaces for social integration. BALANCE able to accomplish work, life and leisure balance.

Contextual Response: A verdant tower of green in the heart of Singapore’s dense Central Business District. Nomad House is a prototype of land use intensification for the urban tropics. Unlike the sleek and sealed skyscrapers that evolved out of the temperate west, this tropical “living tower” offers an alternative image to the sustainable technology of the genre. Sky gardens with lush vegetation serve as fresh air grapes and minimize the impact of downdrafts. Village clusters are conceived as six levels to maximize integration and visibility. As the building rises, it retreats in a parabolic way, informed by aerodynamic studies to enhance air circulation for a more comfortable microclimate. The presentation of the soil, by creating an elevated covered street as a base, enables the local plants, animals, and micro-organisms to grow and evolve as a part of the urban park. The elevated landscape creates a biodiversity garden that provides a comfortable microclimate in the heart.

Designing micro-neighbourhood in a hybrid plan. Creative hubs for digital nomads: With the help of this modular system, the design achieves applicability at a universal level. Although Singapore Downtown area is mainly dominated by skyscraper typology, it is possible to see various building types as well. It aimed to provide a high-quality living environment by offering a wider choice of housing options. It also sought to transform Singapore into a global financial hub by setting aside land in the city center to support the growth of the economic and services sectors. This model discusses how technology, people, and nature will interact. The creative hubs and working spaces for digital nomads are examples of flexible future-proofed offices because the design can fit more staff or servers based on unexpected needs. PRIVATE OFFICE A separate room with large windows, blackout curtains, and comfortable furniture. Since the office has a separate entrance, private meetings can be held in this section in case of isolation. Since the office can be accessed from these two living spaces, it is also suitable for different working partnership scenarios that digital nomads may encounter.

TWISTED SURFACE Staircases twisted surfaces create space to share, store, play, plant, and exhibit. In this way, the circulation volume also serves a recreational purpose.

LIVING UNITS Flexible walls that moves according to daily needs enable movability to living spaces and practices. It is possible to separate dining, sleeping, and playing areas.

Home as the new office. Compatible with the lifestyle of digital nomads. It was needed to design a space where the flexibility of working in motion. The concept was based on the suggestion of establishing a platform where it is possible to expand the possibilities instead of using a desk that limits the size of the usable space and accessibility. The aim is to free the actions of sitting, working in motion, leaning, meeting, quickly accessing the equipment, and observing the integrated nature from different distances, instead of defining the locations of the actions. It was intended to increase and diversify the possibilities of the way of interactions of the users with each other and the space. The living units form the outer façade of the mass in the form of a grid cover, while the interior is devoted to cultural activities and shared workspaces. While rigid from the outside, the picture is quite different inside the clusters: the living units specifically programmed space is pushed to the sides, thereby establishing a collaborative core that can be described as a “universal space.”

Scaffolding The Horrea, the Forum, the CIty Our proposal relates to the experimental program called Estate Romana, conceived between 1977 and 1985 by Renato Nicolini, at the time director of the Culture Department of the city of Rome. In particular it aims to connect with the plan of Progetto Fori, the project to re-establish the pedestrian consistency of the central archaeological area, proposed by Benevolo and promoted by Argan and Petroselli. In line with that framework, we conceived the site of the Horrea as an integrated piece of a larger urban system that extends from the Colosseum to the Campidoglio, and includes important sites such as the environmental complex of Palatine hill (flanked by via Sacra and via di Santa Maria Antiqua) and the architectural complex of the church of Saint Theodore. The system then, form the level of the Forum, articulates on the level of the present city, along via San Teodoro, via della Consolazione, via Monte Tarpeo, and viale del Campidoglio.

Inhabit the site. New modalities to practice the Horrea as an urban space. Experience the site as a repository of wonders. First aim: to displace a series of spatial episodes to inhabit the site of the Horrea. To articulate in those episodes new modalities to practice the Horrea as a re-activated urban space. The project becomes the pretext for an extraordinary possession of an urban space. A machine where it is possible to experience the site as a repository of wonders. A series of points is selected to generate a system, a new mechanism able to host functions, to enable connections, and eventually, at least partially, to re-establish the volume of the ancient warehouse.

Program and Volumetric Articulation. The courtyard is preserved in its actual conditions, yet it may be conceived as an ephemeral space to reinvent different practices. The deck of the first level of the Pavillion is stretched out to mark the southern side of the courtyard, and to provide a space for a protected archaeological promenade. This elevated deck ends with a stepped ramp that descends along the western edge of the courtyard and connects with the existing path directed to the church of San Teodoro.

Scaenae Frons (the pavillion). Basically an envelope realized with a light structural skeleton (similar to a scaffolding frame). Within this structure are inserted two levels of decks, that, together with the primary function as a circulation paths, also serve as a support surface for a number of architectural cells to give rooms to different functions and space to different users (archaeologists, scholars, tourists, citizens). This sort of inhabitated scaffolding is screened by a thin scenographic skin that attempts to re-propose, in a schematic fashion, the articulation of the original facade. Eventually the mechanism is completed by a roof realized by cast iron grids supporting rows of fotovoltaic panels to ensure an off grid structure.

The Apopsis (the staircase tower). We propose the integration and reconstruction of the original flight of staircase still in situ. The new portion of the intervention is realized in folded steel and enclosed by a light skin that emphasizes its appearance as a tower. A shift from the ordinary function as a vertical circulation element, to a symbolic feature as a landmark and as a totemic wall.

The Scalaria (the stepped platform). This inclined platform connects the second level deck with the upper street of Santa Maria Antiqua. It replaces the inclined roof that today protects the archaeological remains between the southern wall of the Horrea and the upper wall allong Santa Maria Antiqua street.

NARRATIVE

“The location of a building is not some random point in a grid, that doesn’t provide the sense of place; the location of the built form and the reference to the surrounding landscape that is the main concern for the place making.” Christian Norberg-Schulz, Genius Loci Is it possible for a building to exist beyond function and form and evoke emotions of a place it belongs to? Meanwhile architecture today is under the risk of evolving to a mass-produced, generic, contextless building form; the project aims to regenerate ‘the spirit of the place’. Taking part in the dominating context of Sinop, the goal is to make a strong gesture in accordance with the physical and cultural heritage of the city. The existence of the building is born from the very first feelings evoked in the site with the ever-raining grey sky, dark ocean hitting the walls of the castle, rocks and stone walls blended. Sinop is a notorious town, famous for its prison of thought crime. The intellectuals of this country were imprisoned, tortured, killed inside the high walls built layer by layer by Lydians, Macedonians, Persians, Byzantines, Seljucks an Ottomans. These walls have memory. They hold the record of wealth with marble, suffering with limestone.

The Spirit of Place.

Concept sketches drawn in charcoal

The design of Library and City Archieve is generated to preserve the spirit of the place. Situated on the close proximity of the Sinop Prison and citadel walls, the walls of the building extend from the land towards the sea giving direction as well as carrying all the masses. Storing of a rather abstract entity such as culture has similarities with storing archieval materials, goods or objects but it also requires a unique approach. The program: “Library and City Archieve” serves this specific need, as an archive in which material objects are analyzed, restored and translated to both analogue and digital medium. The location of the project is in close proximity to the harbor and citadel walls. This decision of location highlights Sinop’s character as a city of dynamic flows of people, information and culture.

Citadel walls and city image. It is significant to notice that the narrative framework of this project also uses the conceptual linkages between the definitions of form and formation as reference points. The vertical spine of this concept is established by the wall, which is considered as a subject from the outside as it is fixed in an objective location. This vertical content, which runs throughout the story, is founded on causal relationships between the responses to inquiries about the wall. Based on the position and ideas of formal representations throughout history, the wall is developed in the narrative in “formal” terms as a Gathering Wall, City Wall, and Masonry Wall. With the urban planning phase of the project, waterfront of Sinop is reshaped. The problems of the initial phase: improper filling of land resulting in unusable marshlands of sand, dominant vehicle circulation in the shoreline lacking of pedestrian access, and stagnant economy were spotted. The proposed solution is to integrate an university campus with a continuous promenade along with generation of communal space for the city with faculties of humanities, literature, marine sciences, performing arts along with a library, city archive and museum to both revitalize the economy in a sustainable manner and change the ill reputation of the city as ‘Alcatraz of Anatolia’.

Material Selection The objective is to draw attention to the transition in materiality using a variety of local and natural materials. Taking inspiration from the fortress to the west, natural bazalt stones were employed as load-carrying walls on the façade. Furthermore, it is a depiction of the city with a smear of internal structural presence evident through the thin corten steel panels and glass utilized in the atrium rather than hiding the historical texture of the city walls. The use of corten steel panels accentuates the beauty of aging materials and the passage of time, while the water body in front reflects a brilliant view of glass and metal, adding another dimension to the front plaza’s sensory stimulation. It stimulates the macroclimate and provides additional directionality to the entrances and apertures.

NARRATIVE

The site is the Band Rotunda which is located at the heart of Oriental Parade, one of the most beautiful and popular streets in Wellington. The area of the site is about 530 m2 with a semi-circular shape projecting into Wellington Harbour. A bathing pavilion was built on the site in the nineteenth century. A second floor was subsequently added to the original artdeco structure in the late twentieth century which until recently accommodated a restaurant. After an earthquake in 2016, a crack in the foundation of the building indicated that the added floor was too heavy for the original design. City councilors and planners question whether we should bring the building back to its original design, or if we would be better off to create a new structure that expresses the spirit of our time. Creative and innovative proposals both the design of the new structure and for the use of the site are provided.
