THE LEGEND OF SAINT GEORGE
Once upon a time, when dragons used to fly and wizards were magic‌
‌ in catalan band there were kings, princes and princesses, knights, peasants, boys, girls‌ and a dragon!
There was a small village where people lived scared by a dragon because they had to give sheep and lambs to the hungry dragon.
But the day came when there were no more lambs, and people decided to make a draw to choose the girls that the dragon would eat‌
One day the draw elected the king’s daughter…
The whole Catalan people learned about the great misfortune of the king and the sadness of the princess.
Early in the morning the princess went to the dark cave of the dragon and waited until the dragon awoke‌
Suddenly the big dragon came out of the cave…drawing fire from his mounth…he was hungry and angry… and he wanted to eat!
The dragon looked at the shaky princess and it laid the table for breakfast
He suddenly heard the voice of a brave knight called George who came from far away. He said that eating fruit and vegetables was very healthy.
The dragon, who was very angry, replied with fire.
The knight and the dragon fought. One to save the princess, and the other for his breakfast.
After the great battle, the knight beat the dragon
A red rosebush was born from the dragon’s blood
The knight got off the horse and he gave a red rose to the princess
For this reason every 23rd of April, all the knights give a rose to their beloved girl showing thir love, freedon and courage to save them of all evil.
Nowadays, on 23rd April, men give their beloved women a rose
And women give their beloved men a book
People buy books and roses in the streets
