Being active and healthy is not always easy when there are so many things that pull us in all different directions. It takes planning and finding activities that are enjoyable and of interest to keep us motivated and active. The Active Elgin Coalition is committed to making sport, recreation and leisure activities in St. Thomas and Elgin County easy to find and accessible for everyone so they can enjoy the health benefits of living a healthy lifestyle. The Active Elgin website www.activeelgin.ca now has a new look and it is easier to search and find activities of interest. We encourage you to regularly check it out for up to date seasonal sport, recreation and leisure programs as well as the events calendar for related events. New sections to the website include information about physical health—Get Active, Active Transportation, Did You Know?!, Feature Organizations and you can sign up for our quarterly newsletter. Knowing the amount and kind of physical activity as well as knowing the limits for sedentary behaviour (sitting for long periods of time watching TV, playing video games, being on the computer or in a vehicle) can guide the kind of activities for you and or family members to participate in. For information on the Canadian Physical Activity and Sedentary Behaviour Guidelines and the handbook with samples of weekly activities for each age group, go to www.csep.ca/guidelines. If you are looking for an activity for yourself or a family member and just aren’t sure which one to choose, Active Elgin Day can help you decide. Active Elgin Day is a one day event where organizations that provide sport, recreation and leisure activities open their doors for free or low cost so people of all ages and abilities can try and experience the activities the organizations offer. Plan to attend Active Elgin Day, on Saturday, September 27, 2014. Make it a full day of being active while having fun at the same time! Starting in September, participating organizations and their locations will be listed on the Active Elgin website www.activeelgin.ca.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS I can’t find Floor Hockey. Why isn’t it included? Try selecting “Hockey”. Many of the categories are very broadly defined. For example, “Hockey” includes Floor hockey, Ball Hockey, and Broomball; “Skating” includes Figure Skating, Speed Skating, Synchronized Skating, and Public Skating.

What activities can be included? The Active Elgin Coalition has a policy that only organizations/activities that offer sport, leisure or recreation programs can be included in the database and guide. For more information please review the policy section of the website or contact us for additional information.

How do I register for an activity? Use the information provided in the activity listing to contact the organization directly for more information about registration or go to the Active Elgin website www.activeelgin.ca and click on the “Email Us” on the webpage of the organization for the program you would like more information on.

How can I edit the information about my organization or our activities? In order to edit your organization’s information, you must visit www.activeelgin.ca and login by clicking on “Members log in”. If you have forgotten your password, you can click on “Request new password”.

How can my organization be included in the guide? All information included in the printed guide comes from data submitted to the www.activeelgin.ca website. If you would like to have your organization included in future editions of the guide, please visit the website and click on “Register” under the Join Us section. If you have never been listed with Active Elgin you will create an account and once it is approved by the administrator, you will then be able to add your organization’s activity.

How can I advertise my organization and services in the Active Elgin Guide? The Active Elgin Guide provides a prime opportunity to advertise your organization and services to residents and businesses across Elgin-St. Thomas. The shelf life of the Active Elgin Guide is much longer than your typical advertising opportunity. A variety of ad sizes and rates are available and advertising space is reserved on a firstcome, first-serve basis. Contact Elgin St. Thomas Public Health at 519-631-9900 or email activeelgin@elginhealth.on.ca for more information on advertising in the 2015 guide!

We submitted our organization/activity to the database, but it was not included in the printed guide. Why not? The publication deadline for January’s guide is October 15! Be sure to log into the www.activeelgin.ca website using your email and password to update/add your activities each year by October 15. Organizations that do not update their information by the deadline date are not included in the guide and will no longer be active on the website. This helps to ensure that the information in the guide is current. Also, submitted activities that do not align with the policies may not be included.
