Year 8 French and Spanish Module 1 - My portrait This is the first unit in the Year 8 French and Spanish courses. It aims to challenge students by adding more details and complexity to what they have already covered. It is designed to promote confidence in their language of study and to keep it relevant and useful. New language content • • • • • • • •

At the end of this unit, students will be able to greet people in a variety of registers and situations, describe themselves and others in both spoken and written form, understand and correctly spell, identify masculine and feminine adjectival agreements, and use a variety of opinions. French and Spanish Module 2 – My family and other animals This is the second unit in Year 8, taught during the second half of the Autumn term. This unit moves students from introducing themselves and individuals onto introducing their family members. They will use a lot of the same grammar and vocabulary used in the previous unit to describe people, but they will be using more complex grammar in the form of the third person singular. It also encourages students to transfer vocabulary learnt previously into new yet familiar contexts. New language content • • • •

At the end of this unit, students will be able to describe their close family members (age, name, appearance) and their pets and other animals. They should also be able to describe the families and pets of others. French and Spanish Module 3 - House and Home This is the third unit in Year 8, taught during the first half of the Spring term. This unit moves on from introducing family members onto introducing the student’s house and local area. They will use a lot of the same grammar used in the previous unit to describe people, but they will be using more complex grammar in the form of the third person singular and plural. It also encourages them to transfer vocabulary learnt previously into new yet familiar contexts. New language content • types of houses • rooms • furniture

At the end of this unit, students will be able to describe their house and talk about their bedroom.


They will also be able to give their opinion about where they live and be able to describe the houses and bedrooms of others. French and Spanish Module 4 – My town and local area This is the fourth unit in Year 8, taught during the second half of the Spring term. This unit moves on from students describing their homes onto introducing their town, local area and the weather. They will use similar grammar to that used in the previous units but it will be more complex with the introduction of more irregular verbs and more complex sentence structures and an introduction to the future tense and making plans. At the end of this unit, most students will be able to describe their local area, give directions and tell you what the weather is like. Some students may also be able to make plans in the future and give a weather forecast using the future tense. French and Spanish Module 5 – Free time and future plans This is the fifth unit in Year 8, taught during the first half of the Summer term. This unit moves students on from describing their town, local area and the weather onto revising the activities they do in their free time (a revision of Year 7), now including both the future and past tenses. They will use similar grammar to that used in the previous units but it will be more complex with the introduction of more irregular verbs, more complex sentence structures and a revision of the future tense with an introduction of the past tense. At the end of this unit, most students will be able to describe say what they do normally, what they have done and what they will do in their free time. Some students may also be able to describe these events including details such as what they weather was like, who they went with and what they thought of it. French and Spanish Module 6 – Review and revision This is the sixth and final unit in Year 8, taught during the second half of the Summer term. This unit revises all the work done in year 8 and it is a way of consolidating all new grammar and vocabulary learnt. Students will use the same grammar and vocabulary learnt in previous units. The challenge in this unit is not learning a lot of new vocabulary but instead in applying it all in one context – creating and writing their own comic book using Comic Life. New content • •
