It was with all the best intentions that we set out to produce The Resident Plus on a monthly basis, but events contrived to make that a little difficult. Having taken on the editorial role at Andalucia Life we were unable to publish the June issue, and this the July edition is a little later than intended. With the printed edition of The Resident out this coming weekend, we have concentrated our efforts on bringing you information on forthcoming events, along with a number of features we feel will be of interest you, and leaving the news for this month’s issue of The Resident. Having said that, now that we’ve got everything into some kind of rhythm, normal service will be resumed with the August issue of The Resident Plus coming out around the first of the month (fingers crossed). I can’t believe the amount of live music on the Coast this year. It seems that, after years of musical drought, the floodgates have opened with artists of all kinds providing something for everyone. The Resident has teamed up with the musical community at www.elintercambio.org to bring you as much information on the local music scene as we can, and we are inviting readers to help contribute to that information with news of gigs, reviews, etc., for more information visit www.elintercambio.org to see how you can become involved. Festival of the Full Moon This Friday, July 15 sees the celebration of the first Festival of the Full Moon to be held in Sabinillas. Residents and visitors will be able to enjoy a magnificent ‘chill out’ festival with ambient music, jugglers, tightrope walkers, torches, etc. The festival is the idea of Manilva’s Tourism department led by Emilio López Berenguer and aims to create an annual event which will fall between the San Juan festival and the August Fair. Activities will begin at 8.30 pm and

the lights of the paseo will be switched off to coincide with the rise of the full moon. Music will be provided by a popular DJ, along with a saxophonist and percussionist.

Thanks to an agreement between Manilva’s Tourism Department, headed by Emilio López Berenguer and the Benalmadena Classic Car Club, Sunday July 17 will see Manilva host the I Classic Car Rally. Beginning at 10.30 am the club will exhibit its collection of classic cars at a number of points in the municipality beginning in Castillo de la Duquesa with a civic reception after which the vehicles will parade in convoy through Sabinillas, before heading up to Manilva where they will display in Calle Mar giving residents the opportunity to see up close these automotive gems. The event will finish up in Duquesa Port where the collection can be viewed around the harbourside. Manilva’s Tourism Department has announced that this is just one of a number of events designed to raise the profile of Manilva and to provide attractions for both visitors and residents alike.

The Caves and Cliffs Section of GONHS (The Gibraltar Ornithological & Natural History Society) is carrying out vegetation removal work on the Tower of Homage as part of the Government project to restore the Moorish Castle. Section members, who are trained and experienced in rope work, have been contracted through John Licudi Consulting to carry out this specialised work. The site was first surveyed by the Botanical Section of GONHS to ensure that no rare or endangered plants would be affected. Experts from the Gibraltar Botanic Gardens are also involved in removing scrub vegetation from elsewhere on the site. The work will include removal of vegetation and treatment of any remaining roots. GONHS describes this as the ideal way of carrying out such maintenance work, with the true experts in the field involved in every stage of the project. X Manilva International Festival
Once again Manilva’s international community will be celebrating its diverse cultures and traditions at this year’s X Manilva International Festival. As last year this edition of this Festival will be held on the Paseo Maritimo in Sabinillas with activities taking place both on the promenade and the beach.
The International Festival is being organised by the Foreign Residents’ Department of Manilva Town Hall in collaboration with local representatives of the various nationalities. The Festival runs from Friday, 29th until Sunday 31st July with entertainment, music and dancing, and as usual the opportunity to sample the gastronomy, culture and traditions of the many nationalities that comprise Manilva’s cosmopolitan community who will be exhibiting along the promenade. Visitors will also be able to enjoy flavours from around the world as well as take the opportunity to visit the many bars and restaurants which line Sabinillas’s attractive Paseo Maritimo promenade. Starting on the Friday night, after the official opening, there will be an extensive programme of entertainment on the main stage situated in the square just in front of the statue on the paseo. The festival begins at 8 pm on Friday, 29th July with an official inauguration ceremony by the local authorities, headed by Mayoress Antonia Muñoz, after which the extensive programme of music and dance begins. On Saturday morning there will be children’s fun and entertainment from 11 am to 2 pm. From 1 pm the individual tents will open for business, giving visitors the opportunity to sample the cusine of the various nationalities participating. From 8 pm the entertainment programme continues on the main stage. On Sunday, 31st the tents open once again at 1 pm with the entertainment continuing at 8 pm.

Local fishermen celebrate their patron on Dia Virgen del Carmen Tradition has it that the Carmelite monks, who inhabited the slopes of Mount Carmel and worshipped the Virgin Mary who had appeared there in a vision, were forced to flee by a Saracen invasion force. During this eviction the Virgin appeared to them again and promised to be their ‘Star of the Sea’ and to guide them to safety. Since then she has been the patron saint of mariners and, as such, the Virgen del Carmen is revered amongst the local fishing communities of southern Spain . Virgen del Carmen is celebrated by the fishing communities along the coast and is the Patron Saint of many of them including Estepona, Castillo de la Duquesa, La Linea and Torreguadiaro and on her feast day - the 16th July - statues of the Virgen del Carmen are carried through the streets before being placed on board the local fishing boats and paraded up and down the coast, accompanied by flotillas of fishing boats and pleasure craft, often coming close inshore to allow worshippers to swim out and throw flowers on board.

Rick Stein films his Spanish cooking series at Villa La Era in Málaga Villa La Era in Casarabonela, Málaga has opened its doors to Rick Stein, the renowned BBC TV chef and cookery writer, who along with his production team have stayed at Villa La Era for two weeks to film 12 of the 140 recipes found in Rick Stein´s latest cook book: “Rick Stein’s Spain: 140 New Recipes Inspired by My Journey Off the Beaten Track”. The recipes prepared and filmed at Villa La Era are part of Rick Stein´s Spain, a series consisting of four programmes to be broadcast on BBC2 over the summer which depict the customs of Spanish cuisine. With a long history as a chef and writer in the UK and Australia, Stein wanted to capture traditional Spanish cuisine leaving behind the stereotypes to get close to the cookery of ordinary people demonstrating the quality and finesse of the truly typical and traditional dishes. Denhams, the English production company in charge of making the series, selected Villa La Era as a purely Andalucian location which stands out in its natural surroundings showing the wonderful views of Casarabonela and the whole region.
All of the dishes in this series have been prepared and filmed in the kitchen of Villa La Era, a fitting stage for the DVD. This production is the result of the trip by Rick Stein and his team through the various Spanish regions, where you can see the chef’s easy manner with the people and the marvelous scenery of the cities that give light to the Spanish cuisine. Among these are images of the exterior of Villa La Era and the village of Casarabonela. So taken with the views from La Era Stein decided that this was to be the backdrop for the cover of the DVD, where he appears cooking on the terrace of Villa La Era with Casarabonela present in the background. The production broadcast on BBC2, sure to enhance tourism, is a very important opportunity for the projection and recognition of the village of Casarabonela, being seen on British television and internationally through the sale of the DVD. This is a programme that has a large number of viewers and followers after his previous series French Odyssey, Rick Stein’s Taste of the Sea, Fruits of the Sea, Seafood Odyssey, Fresh Food, Seafood Lovers’ Guide and two sets of Food Heroes. New rules mean it will be easier and cheaper to travel abroad with pets It will become cheaper and easier to travel abroad with pets when new rules are introduced at the start of next year. The UK will harmonise its pet movement rules with the rest of the European Union from 1 January 2012, bringing the UK’s Pet Travel Scheme into line with the most recent science. The UK will maintain its high level of protection against animal diseases after the changes, which have the potential to save pet owners around £7 million in fees. Forcing pets to spend six months in quarantine, a practice dating from the 1800s, is no longer necessary because of vastly improved rabies vaccines and treatments. All pets will still need to be vaccinated against rabies. Pets from the EU and listed non-EU countries such as the USA and Australia will no longer need a blood test and will only have to wait 21 days before they travel. Pets from unlisted nonEU countries such as India, Brazil and South Africa will be able to enter the UK if they meet certain strict criteria to ensure they are protected against rabies, including a blood test and a three-month wait before they enter the UK. The changes will ensure the risk of rabies coming to the UK remains extremely low. It’s estimated that the new rules mean there would be one case of rabies in a pet in the UK once every 211 years, with the possibility of a person dying from rabies obtained from a pet once in every 21,000 years. Environment Secretary Caroline Spelman said: “The UK’s quarantine system was designed to combat the threat of rabies in the 19th century and has now been left far behind by scientific advances. It’s time we changed these outdated rules which have caused hardship to generations of pets and pet owners,
and those who rely on assistance dogs, with too many animals cooped up unnecessarily. “What is needed is a simpler, evidencebased system for protecting the UK from rabies which recognises the actual
risk to pets and pet owners. The EU’s pet movement scheme has been working very well for nearly a decade, and it makes sense for us to have similar rules. It means the UK will remain protected from rabies and other exotic diseases while making it easier and cheaper for people to take their pets abroad.” Chief Medical Officer Professor Dame Sally Davies said: “Rabies is a very serious human disease and the rabies-free status of the UK must be protected. The pet travel scheme provides important protection of public health by ensuring that pets entering the UK are free of rabies and other infections. “Scientific evidence shows that there is a robust alternative to quarantine in preventing rabies incursion from those countries where there is a high incidence of rabies and good reason for
changing our very precautionary rules. The EU pet travel rules have been successful in preventing any cases of rabies occurring in legally moved pets since the scheme started, so harmonising the UK’s rules with those of the EU will make it easier for those who wish to travel with their pets. “It is important to continue to protect the public against the risk of serious exotic tapeworm infections and the government is pressing to retain our tapeworm controls for pets entering the UK. The wider public health risks from exotic tickborne infections and the need for tick controls for pets entering the UK will be kept under review.” The UK has been discussing with the European Commission the most appropriate form of tapeworm controls for dogs, to ensure the UK continues to be protected from Echinococcus multilocularis. The Commission has recently indicated that its proposals, expected shortly, would enable the UK and other tapeworm-free countries to retain tapeworm controls, with a requirement that animals be treated between one and five days before returning to the UK. Tick treatment for pet animals returning to the UK will no longer be required. All pet owners travelling abroad with their animals should discuss with their vets the use of treatments, including those designed to control ticks as part of good animal health practice. The UK, along with Ireland, Sweden and Malta, has an exemption from the standard EU pet travel rules. They are all harmonising their entry rules with the rest of the EU at the same time as the UK.

Cars left in your name will still be accumulating annual taxes. These charges remain your responsibility as will any damages or fines incurred. Many owners of these automobiles, who do not know the laws, abandon the vehicle, give it away or pay a garage or gestor to deal with the matter. There is a simpler way with nil expenditure. Go to your nearest local police station with all your and the vehicle’s documentation, tell the police that you wish to scrap the vehicle. Sign the documents. They will willingly accommodate you and even send a breakdown truck to pick up your car if it is not mobile.
Abusive charges on your telephone bill This subject has been broached in the past. For those expatriates who have recently arrived or taken on a new contract for a telephone for your home need to be aware of the following information. When you make the agreement for this service, you must always ask for which offers are available. Over the recent years there has been an
opportunity to obtain the connection and router free. This will only be the case if you insist on the offer. In most cases you will be assured by the commercial department that they will honour your request. Wait for the first bill. Do not be surprised to find that you are charged what the invoice will list as ‘occasional concepts’ when questioned the staff will admit that this relates to charges for the connection and the router also promised without costs if you have contracted the internet. You can reclaim this amount. Be insistent and they will refund the extra monies paid.
Obtaining free health care for your family It is surprising how many breadwinners in the family who pay social security, are not aware that this payment includes all their dependents. To obtain this service, do not go directly to your health centre and expect to register you family with a doctor. You should to go to your nearest social security office first. Take all the necessary documents. These will include Passport and residence permits for all family members. For the children if you have one, ‘Lbro de familia’ Proof of you having registered on the social security system, your padron which must include all the family members. The Over 50s Show is looking for new ideas
The ever popular event always attracts a huge amount of visitors
The unmissable Over 50s Show the lifestyle event for the Coast’s seniors is back this November for an incredible fifth year – and the organisers are looking for your help. Said director John Low: ‘Every year we try to add something different to the mix so that the event does not becoming predicable and stale, but when we start talking to visitors we are asked ‘why was this or this not in? ‘So in a sense we are throwing it back in the visitors court and asking them to contact us with ideas and features they would like to see at the show. The Mighty Pimps in Duquesa Local blues band, The Mighty Pimps, will be performing live on Saturday, July 16 as part of the Leisure Lounge’s programme of live music this summer. The band members are originally from the U.K. but all now reside on the Costa del Sol in Southern Spain. Chas Burnett guitarist and vocalist formed the band in 2006 and although the members have changed to its current line-up, the professional musicianship is always a hight standard. As a blues band, they produce a great tight sound, crossing traditional Chicago style blues, with blues rock. Their repertoire consists of their own original material intermingled with classic blues songs. Over the past two years they have been building up a following around Andalucia, with live concerts at blues venues and festivals. Their stage performance is suitable for small clubs or large concert venues. May 2011 they toured South Africa. The release of their first CD ‘Blues It Up!’ has been well received by the UK written blues press, and various radio and internet stations, with blues shows around Europe and the US have been featuring tracks. Mavis Staples in concert at Malaga’s Teatro Cervantes
With her bold new album, You Are Not Alone, the legendary vocalist, Mavis Staples, adds a remarkable new chapter to an historic career. Staples is a Rock and Roll Hall of Famer, a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award winner, and a National Heritage Fellowship Award recipient. VH1 named her one of the 100 Greatest Women of Rock and Roll, and Rolling Stone listed her as one of the 100 Greatest Singers of All Time. Mavis Staples began her career with her family group in 1950. Initially singing locally at churches and appearing on a weekly radio show, the Staples scored a hit in 1956 with “Uncloudy Day” for the Vee-Jay label. When Mavis graduated from what is now Paul Robeson High School in 1957, The Staple Singers took their music on the road. Led by family patriarch Roebuck “Pops” Staples on guitar and including the voices of Mavis and her siblings Cleo, Yvonne, and Pervis, the Staples were called “God’s Greatest Hitmakers.” With Mavis’ voice and Pops’ songs, singing, and guitar playing, the Staples evolved from enormously popular gospel

By the mid-1960s The Staple Singers, inspired by Pops’ close friendship with Martin Luther King, Jr., became the spiritual and musical voices of the civil rights movement. They covered contemporary pop hits with positive messages, including Bob Dylan’s “A Hard Rain’s a-Gonna Fall” and a version of Stephen Stills’ “For What It’s Worth.” Staples made her first solo foray while at Epic Records with The Staple Singers releasing a lone single “Crying in the Chapel” to little fanfare in the late 1960s. The single was finally re-released on the 1994 Sony Music collection Lost Soul. Her first solo album would not come until a 1969 selftitled release for the Stax label. After another Stax release, Only for the Lonely, in 1970, she released a soundtrack album, A Piece of the Action, on Curtis Mayfield’s Curtom label. A 1984 album (also self-titled) preceded two albums under the direction of rock star Prince; 1989’s Time Waits for No One, followed by 1993’s The Voice, which People magazine named one of the Top Ten Albums of 1993. Her recent 1996 release, Spirituals & Gospels: A Tribute to Mahalia Jackson was recorded with keyboardist Lucky Peterson. The recording honours Mahalia Jackson, a close family friend and a significant influence on Mavis Staples’ life. On February 13, 2011, Mavis Staples won her first Grammy award in the category for Best Americana Album for ‘You Are Not Alone’. Jamiroquai finally get to play the Costa del Sol Jamiroquai fans on the Costa del Sol finally get the chance to see Jay Kay and the band perform live, when the play the Malaga Auditorium on Wednesday August 3. Jamiroquai are a British jazz funk and acid jazz band formed in 1992. Jamiroquai were initially the most prominent component in the early-1990s London-based acid jazz movement, alongside groups such as Incognito, the James Taylor Quartet, and the Brand New Heavies. Other Acid Jazz artists such as ‘Moses Mayes’ and ‘Groove Collective’ are popular comparisons. Subsequent albums have explored other musical directions such as pop, rock and electronica. Jamiroquai have sold more than 40 million albums worldwide and won a Grammy Award in 1997. The band had previously been scheduled to play the Mijas Racecourse as part of a programme of concerts back in 2005, but the gig was cancelled with the band virtually sat on the doorstep, when the promoters ran out of money half way through the season of concerts.

Successful singer and popular entertainer, Peter Andre, will be playing at Playa Del Pinillo in Marbella on the 22nd of July. Rock the Rock Festival Gibraltar With music festivals taking place across the UK, Spain and the rest of Europe virtually every weekend during the summer, Gibraltar has put itself forward as another venue on the calendar when next month it plays host

The Alan Parsons Project were a British progressive rock band, active between 1975 and 1990, consisting of Eric Woolfson and Alan Parsons surrounded by a varying number of session musicians. TAXI Taxi are a Gibraltarian pop rock band founded in 2005 after the break-up of Melon Diesel. After the quintet’s break-up, its members dissolved into two different bands: Taxi (Dylan Ferro, Dani Fa and Danny Bugeja) and Area 52 (Guy Palmer and Adrian Pozo). FIAM III - A Global Treasure Trove of Artists
With some eighty high calibre artists taking part in the third edition, the Festival de Arte International Marbella is on track to become one of of the highlights on Marbella’s annual cultural calendar following the success of this year’s event which was held from Thursday June 23 to Sunday June 26 Fifteen different nationalities were represented among the artists exhibiting, and the FIAM is living up to its name as an international art festival. The multicultural mix of participants is a true reflection of the cosmopolitan community in Marbella. There were artists from Spain, UK, Germany, USA, Sweden, Denmark, Russia, Georgia, Italy and Cuba among others exhibiting their works in the 2011 edition of the FIAM. With an outstanding selection of artists from around the world preparing displaying their works, FIAM attracted a spectacular number of visitors.
A Cultural Melange Around 20,000 people visited the event last year, and this year’s festival proved to be even more popular. With an ever more enticing programme of entertainment, the new Buddha Bar Chillout Lounge area, a gourmet food corner, a media centre, an exhibition of retro furniture from the 50’s and 60’s and much more, the festival which is fully supported by the Tourism Council of Marbella Town Hall, comprised a dynamic street festival bringing the centre of town to life in an explosion of colourful art, music and performances over the three days. Sprawling down the Alameda and the Avenida del Mar in the heart of Marbella between the quaint Old Town and the Paseo Marítimo, artists displayed their work in an attractive line up of individual white tents. With artistic styles ranging from impressionism, to hyperrealism, in every media from painting, photography and sculpture to digital art, the festival was a mesmerizing showcase of artistic and cultural diversity.

This play is entirely based on the life of Hannah, who, much like the Happy Hooker herself has spent quite some time in the world of strippers, dancers and sex workers and not only lived that life but also wrote an excellent one hour play about it. Who else could play the role of this stripper better than the woman who lived and loved it herself?
Hannah has won many awards at last year’s Edinburgh Theatre festival for her outstanding performance and she is now working on a TV series based on her play. She lives in London and is happy to visit Spain for the very first time in her life. Hannah graduated from ArtsEd with and MA in Acting and from Goldsmiths, University of London, with a BA in Drama and Theatre Arts. ‘Stripped’ is Hannah’s first written work. It was originally developed as part of the Team Angelica ‘Louder Than Words’ season of new writing at the Tristan bates Theatre in February 2009 curated by Rikki Beadle-Blair and John R Gordon. Hannah took the show to the Edinburgh Festival 2010 where it received excellent 4 and 5 star reviews. Since Edinburgh she has twice toured the show to various venues around the UK with Scamp Theatre, and is touring the show again this autumn. Hannah’s other theatre credits include: ‘Facebook Fables’, Gilded Balloon, Edinburgh festival 2009; ‘Grope Box’, Drill Hall Theatre, London, directed by Rikki Beadle-Blair; ‘Fang Club’, Oval House Theatre, London. Hannah’s film credits include: ‘Wake Up’ directed by Douglas Ray; ‘FIT’ directed by Rikki Beadle-Blair; ‘Three Stags’ directed by Mark Locke; ‘Charlene’ directed by Sharon Odams. Why can’t all sportsmen be like golfers? By Stuart Harvey Male professional golfers are amongst the world’s highest paid sportsmen, regularly competing for prize money in excess of half a million euros. Yet despite the high rewards these men remain sportsmen in every sense of the word, competing hard but fair, and this is part of what makes them so eminently watchable. In May the European professional golf tour descended upon Casares as twenty four of the world’s top male golfers competed in the Volvo World Match Play tournament at the spectacular Finca Cortesin course. In fact since the World Match Play event started in 1964, this was the strongest ever field with seven of the world’s top ten golfers taking part. This was certainly a massive compliment to the Finca Cortesin course and Volvo the tournament sponsors. Unlike some of their sporting counterparts, these young men did not come complete with “WAGS” intent upon creating their own media circus, or “red top” journalists seeking a scoop about who had taken out the latest super injunction. Yet the fact that they were here on this little corner of the Spanish coast, was nonetheless an incredible draw. Like all highly paid sportsman their presence was accompanied by a small army of followers, both professional and amateur. The inevitable media presence was there with both the written and spoken word being well represented by TV, radio and press who were extremely well looked after by both Volvo and the staff of Finca Courtesin. I was fortunate enough to have been able to attend the tournament on the final weekend so I saw for myself how the media are catered for, and I can only thank all concerned for being great hosts. I look forward to the tournament’s return with added expectation now. Whilst I thoroughly enjoyed the golf, and Ian Poulter is to
be congratulated for a fine week’s work culminating in his 2&1 win over the excellent Luke Donald, I have to admit to spending some time watching what was happening on the periphery of the actual tournament and what an education and entertainment that turned out to be. Perhaps I am being naive but I have always assumed that those attending a golf tournament do so primarily for the golf. Not unexpectedly I did observe a certain level of “networking”. Sometimes this involved potential business partners taking place in the hallowed ground that were the VIP areas. Other times it involved the media eagerly cultivating future contacts. This perhaps is understandable but I did see a number of members of the crowd who clearly continued on next page

had either made a mistake when deciding to attend, or who had been dragged along against their better judgment without any choice in the matter. For example I saw at least two dogs obediently sitting by whilst their owners enjoyed the golf. The dogs clearly weren’t golf fans because they paid no attention to any of the players and adamantly refused to acknowledge a good shot when they saw one. I remember seeing the same dog on both the Saturday and Sunday so I applaud him or her for their perseverance, but I suspect that they won’t be back next year. It was also interesting to see how a number of pushchair confined babies reacted to the fact that they had decided to accompany their golf loving parents on a weekend jaunt to the golf course. Like their four legged counterparts they paid scant attention to the play that was going on around them and, apart from occasionally voicing their displeasure at being dragged away from their toys, steadfastly refused to enter into the spirit of the occasion.
It also seemed that long suffering girlfriends and boyfriends were much in evidence over the weekend. I recall witnessing, at the sixth green, two young couples with clearly differing views as regards why they were there. Oddly enough it was the two young girls who were remonstrating with their boyfriends over the golf. The girls clearly wanted to watch Ian and Luke play the short par three. Yet their respective boyfriends, indifferent to their pleas to stay by the green, merely headed off in the direction of the tented village where they said “we would find the best place to get a beer.” Even the timely intervention of a friendly marshal did nothing to persuade the lads to remain watching the golf, and all four strode off in the direction of a cold San Miguel, two clearly more willing than the others! So although I was royally rewarded both as a people watcher and a golfing fan over a glorious weekend turning back to the golf it was a refreshing experience for a sports watcher to see professional sportsmen behaving in a manner which was a credit to their chosen profession. I for one saw not one occasion when golfers surrounded an official and berated them for making a decision they did not like. Nor did I witness any golfer rip off their shirt when they sunk a winning putt and run towards their opponent’s supporters. Instead I saw many instances where a player’s tee shot was greeted by “Good shot” from their opponent, and I can’t recall having heard those words spoken by one footballer to another during a match featured on Match of the Day! And how many professional sportsmen finish a game and head straight for the practice ground as we saw everyday at Finca Cortesin. I even saw the Korean Noh Seung-yul on the driving range the day after he was knocked out of the tournament when most people would have headed home. Of course as it was match-play we also witnessed numerous examples of players conceding putts that the average club golfer would have viewed as anything but a “gimmee”. So it is easy to see why we golf fans love our golf and golfers. What we love to see are true professionals competing against each other within the rules and spirit of the game, for the entertainment of us mere mortals who can only marvel at a skill we find it impossible to replicate during our own games at our local club. Long may it continue and I for one look forward to their return to this small corner of Spain.
