welcome to... AS WE ARE EASILY OVER HALF WAY THROUGH THE YEAR, WE TAKE A LOOK AHEAD TO THE FUTURE AND ALSO BACK, AT WHAT WE’VE ACHIEVED SO FAR. The other day, I heard someone mention something that made me sit up and take notice. That something was the word Christmas! In a sort of unexpected realisation, it became clear that we were in fact over half way through the year and the highlight or dread of people nationwide is now only five months away. As we haven’t really had our summer yet, I decided to promptly ignore this realisation and shelve those plans for a rainy day (although we seem to be having quite a few of them recently)! The month of July also marked a personal milestone for me and the team at EK One as it has been a whole 12 months since we took over last year. It’s been great fun and I hope you, our loyal readers have enjoyed the progress as much as I have. Thanks to all of you for your continued support. We’ve changed our publication dates a little as we feel this will bring you a better experience and allow us to deliver the latest news and goings on in Kent, particularly around the end of the year. We’re still bi-monthly, but starting with this issue, we’ll be covering Aug/Sept, followed by Oct/Nov and Dec/Jan etc.. I hope you enjoy reading this latest edition of EK One. It’s packed with great editorial on the beautiful coastal regions of east Kent, ideas on how to throw the perfect party for your children and a look at some of the regions most hardworking charities and how their work is improving the quality of life for those who are less fortunate in life. We also take a look at the finest local produce from some of the best producers in the Garden of England, plus glance at some of the best cars for driving around with the wind in your hair. Don’t forget, if you want to see your photos published in our magazine, send them in to us and they could be appearing in the next issue! Keep up to date with everything at EK One by checking our twitter page, @ekonemagazine, and via our facebook page; www.facebook.com/ekonelifestyle. As ever, if you have any comments or feedback we’d love to hear from you. Drop us a line at info@ek-one.co.uk.

GOING, GOING... GOON! Nearly 10 years after his death, comedy genius Spike Milligan will again be the centre of attention when one of his paintings comes up for sale – the first time that a painting by the former Goon has gone under the hammer, according to Grand Auctions. Grand Auctions, which hit the headlines recently when it established a world record price for a painting by British artist Alan Lowndes at its very first sale, expects a huge amount of interest in the Spike Milligan painting, a 10 inch by 7 inch watercolour of a female nude which has never been seen in public before. The estimate for Spike Milligan’s painting has been set at £800 to £1,200 when it

goes under the hammer in the Grand Auctions sale in Folkestone in September. Spike was a naturally-gifted artist but although passionate about painting, did not produce a large body of work. The female nude watercolour being sold by Grand Auctions was painted in 1948. The owner of the painting is Folkestone artist Charles Newington, a close friend of Milligan for 20 years before his death in 2002. A successful painter, Charles is best known for creating the White Horse that’s carved into the North Downs hills above Folkestone. Private viewings of the lots to be included in the 28th September sale can be organised in advance at Grand Auctions – call 01303 220440, email info@grandauctions.co.uk or visit www.grandauctions.co.uk

Kent’s Spectacular Coastline

NEWS

To book your stay on Kent’s coast visit www.visitkent.co.uk/coast

Kent’s dramatic 350 mile stretch of coastline boasts some of the finest heritage sites in the country; Dover Castle, Canterbury Cathedral and the magnificent White Cliffs to name but a few. You can even travel through the ages, from the Bronze Age, through to the Romans at Richborough and Reculver, the medieval streets of Sandwich, Margate’s Georgian old town, the Edwardian elegance of Folkestone, the Victorian charm of Broadstairs and the relaxed ambience of Herne Bay, Deal and Hythe all within a stone’s throw of championship links courses and inland parkland courses of merit. The balmy microclimate makes for perfect lazy summer days lounging in a secluded cove (the Isle of Thanet has 15 awardwinning beaches to choose from), or for some high energy sports like surfing, kayaking, jet skiing, kite surfing, there is a beach just for you. In stark contrast is Romney Marsh, famed for its emptiness, its sweeping skies and sense of solitude. Even on a bright winter's day, cobweb-clearing walks along the windswept sands, taking in the bleak beauty of Dungeness – the only place in the UK classified as a desert.

14

Cultural Coast Increasingly Kent’s Coast is becoming known as ‘Kent’s Creative Coast’ as more and more visitors are discovering the creativity in and near every coastal town, alongside the beautiful beaches, working harbours and stunning sunsets. Creativity can be found in wonderful art galleries and in vibrant music, art and theatrical venues all along the coast. It is evident in the thriving independent shops selling interesting locally made arts and crafts and in hotels and restaurants displaying original art produced by local people. Britain’s best known artist JMW Turner was a regular visitor to the Kentish coast and in particular to Margate where he drew inspiration, not only from the coastline but also from the unique quality of light. His association has led to the building of the new Turner Contemporary Gallery which has been a great addition to the creative buzz that already exists in the coastal towns and resorts.

DAYS OUT

Heritage Coast Kent’s coast has an extraordinary past. Discover a vivid historic narrative, stretching across the ages, from Bronze Age man (visit the Bronze Age Boat Gallery at Dover Museum), through to the Romans at Richborough and the medieval streets of Sandwich. Explore Margate’s Georgian old town, the Regency townscapes of Ramsgate, the Victorian cosiness of Broadstairs, and the Edwardian expansiveness of Cliftonville. The towering presence of Dover Castle and the Tudor fortresses of Deal and Walmer form part of a coastal defence network stretching around the English coastline. The Kent Coast provides such a strong and visual historical narrative, embodied in places conveniently close to one another. The Cinque Ports are made up of 14 towns, from Hastings in the west to Margate in the east. Each of the towns has a wealth of rich heritage and maritime traditions for all to discover with museums, medieval houses and landmarks, attractions, forts and castles.

Active Coast Kent’s boating and watersports environment is one of clean air and water, superb coastal scenery, excellent facilities and a warm welcome. Make the most of good sailing waters from Margate to Whitstable or enjoy bird and seal watching cruises, setting sail off Herne Bay and Ramsgate. Get your adrenaline pumping, catching blasts of sea air with kite surfing. Minnis Bay is a great place to learn, with its gently shelving sandy beach making it safe for beginners. If the thrill and excitement of powering across the water is more up your street, Herne Bay is a must for jet-ski junkies with its large open beaches providing excellent conditions. If you fancy surfing the waves, put your skills to the test at Joss Bay. Reward your senses with an exhilarating bike ride along Kent’s dramatic and unspoilt coastline. You can cover quite a distance

by bike and see a lot of Kent’s coast yet still get up close and personal with the wildlife, heritage and landscapes. Pedal along the top of England’s most iconic cliffs, the White Cliffs of Dover. Cycle by the sea at Reculver or Whistable, as the waves gently lap the shoreline. As you cycle along Kent’s coastline there are many opportunities to stop off along the way and take in Kent’s unique coastal history, enjoy a well earned ice cream or fish and chips, paddle in the sea to refresh your weary limbs or lie back, relax and soak up the rays on one of Kent’s many quiet beaches. Walking along Kent’s coast is a relaxing yet invigorating experience, offering many different walking experiences. From the tranquility and isolation of the Romney marshes to the dramatic views from the cliffs of Dover and Folkestone. There are many walks to choose from so there is something for everyone. DAYS OUT

Cycling on the Isle of Sheppey

Enjoy a day away from it all with the breeze in your hair and the wind at your heels. The Isle of Sheppey has some exciting new, mainly traffic-free, cycle routes that offer fun, low cost family days out. The Isle of Harty Trail and the Sheerness Way are flat, circular and perfect for families. They are mainly traffic free but with some sections on road. At a moderate speed

they can be completed comfortably in under an hour, depending on your fitness, but with young children it will take longer. Why not stop along the way to enjoy the local attractions and spend a whole day exploring the area? Sheerness Way

Location: Isle of Sheppey, Leysdown, ME12 4QR and Sheerness, ME12 2BX (Nearest postcode to Barton’s Point parking) Distance: Isle of Harty Trail at Leysdown 5.9miles (9.5km), Sheerness Way 5.6miles (9km) OS Explorer Map: 149 Parking: For the Sheerness Way, parking can be found at Barton Points Coastal Park. For the Isle of Harty Trail, parking can be found at the Coastal Park and there are a further two car parks along the sea wall. Refreshments and facilities: There are various pubs en-route for both trails

Close to Barton’s Point Country Park discover the Queenborough Lines or “canal bank” as it is known locally. It is a mid-nineteenth century ditch and mound fortification built to protect Sheerness Naval Dockyard from attack from inland. More recent concrete gun footings from both world wars can still be seen. In the town centre stands the clock tower built in 1902 to commemorate King Edward VII’s coronation. This 11m (36ft) high iconic feature is one of the oldest and largest surviving cast iron clock towers in Kent. On to the sea wall, the dockyard is visible to the west. Due to its unrivalled location in protecting the River Medway, Sheerness began as a fort. This was tested in the Anglo-Dutch wars in the 1600’s, during

which Sheerness fell. Looking out to sea you may catch a glimpse of the masts of a sunken World War II vessel, the SS Richard Montgomery. It is loaded with explosives but because of its proximity to Sheerness it was deemed too dangerous to blow up! For more family fun, enjoy a paddle in the sea or relax on the shingle beach with a picnic. At Neptune Terrace please dismount and use the ramp to wheel your bike down a small flight of steps. Please also take care when crossing Marine Parade back to Barton’s Point. The nearest Station is Sheerness-on-Sea; from here you are signposted onto the route. Isle of Harty Trail Leysdown is a small but lively seaside resort, with a lovely sand and shell beach perfect for families. Banking on the Perfect Break

Words by Jaillan Yehia

The Swiss city of Zürich may be synonymous with banking, but its unique combination of fresh mountain air, a quaint medieval old town, and world-class art and café culture turns out to offer the seasoned city-breaker a perfect sense of exploration, without ever feeling overwhelming. Switzerland’s largest city is just a 90 minute flight from the UK, and the manageable metropolis can be easily explored on foot, by free-to-hire bike, or by tram. Here are the Top 5 ways to enjoy the Swiss banking capital without reaching for your wallet:

Want to know more about Weekend Breaks to Banking Cities? Visit www.savoirthere.com and click on ‘Travel Quizzes’ to find out which finance capitals right for you.

Stunning Alpine Scenery

This is what you're really here for; drink it all in from one of Zürich’s many vantage points - try taking the Polybahn tram up to the university for perfect city views

Mount Uetliberg

The Swiss love to get back to nature and Zürich's local mountain, a short train ride outside the city centre (take the S10 from the Hauptbahnhof), is the ultimate vantage point to take in the spectacular snow-capped alpine range, or go walking and mountain biking

Zürich’s firmly on the boutique-break scene now, helped by a renaissance in once-industrial Zürich-West. Clubbers and alternative culture lovers have every reason to hit the city for a weekend of decadence, and a perfect place to base yourself is at Hotel Helvetia; housed in a beautiful 19th Century building it’s been brought bang up to date with stylish rooms and has a trendy wood-panelled bistro, offering tables overlooking the Sihl River. Three more cities famous for finance: 1.

Frankfurt Sometimes referred to as Bankfurt, (or Mainhatten, as it sits on the River Mein), there’s more to Frankfurt than high finance. The compact city’s art and culture are underrated and it plays host to one of Europe’s most atmospheric Christmas Markets in the picturesque Römerberg square.

Car Coveting

2.

Luxembourg City Pint-sized Luxembourg may be a financial legend, but its quaint capital perched on high ground with stunning views across valleys and countryside, is straight out of a fairy tale.

Bürkliplatz Flea Market

3.

Monte Carlo Monaco is surprisingly accessible even to those on a modest budget; stay in nearby Nice or elsewhere on the Riviera and take the fast efficient train into Monaco itself.

Enjoy the Wasser

There's something special about a metropolis being set not just on a river (the Limmat), but on a lake too (Zürichsee). Walk to your destination alongside über-clean waterways complete with swimming fish, and wading swans You’ll find yourself indulging in vehicle-viewing just as much as people-watching, as you marvel at the extraordinary number of high-class cars Every Saturday from May ‘til October the pretty lakeside area is given over to a large and eclectic flea market where you can browse for free, and pick up some authentic low cost vintage souvenirs

ART For one night only, the seaside town of Margate in Kent will undergo a miraculous transformation. Multi-award-winning choreographer Wayne McGregor, extraordinary theatre ensemble Pan Optikum and innovative soundscape artist Scanner will collaborate to create a oneoff, spectacular night-time event; BLINK. Thousands are expected to gather along the seafront as buildings come alive, people take to the streets, stunning fire structures appear on the beach and the spectacle unfolds. BLINK is a celebratory event that will re-imagine not only the seafront, but also the sea and sky beyond.

BLINK: MARGATE

MAJOR ARTISTS COLLABORATE TO BRING SPECTACULAR FREE EVENT TO MARGATE’S SEAFRONT

Wayne McGregor of Random Dance will work closely with Pan Optikum to create a cohesive artistic vision for the event which features the 100-strong BLINK Dance company - a troupe of local people who will perform alongside professional dancers for a once-in-a-lifetime experience. German performance company Pan Optikum - who specialise in epic, outdoor, spectacular events - will ‘animate’ buildings, create stunning, large-scale fire objects, and interweave the theatrical and pyrotechnical elements of the show. Electronic wizard and super-talented musician/composer Scanner will provide the soaring sounds to complement the sights. BLINK is coming… You won’t believe your eyes. One of the busiest and most in demand choreographers in the world, Wayne McGregor has carved out time in his 2011 schedule to be part of the project saying “Margate has an intriguing and enduring appeal and I was captivated by the opportunity to create something so site specific and outdoors. The parallel horizons of sky and sea, sea and beach and beach and town provide a rich canvas for dance, performance and sound. Made by, with and for local people BLINK should challenge the senses.” Jane McMorrow and Verity McArthur of McMcArts who are producing the event, will be responsible for delivering its large scale ambition. “This is a massive project for Margate and making it happen is not without its challenges but with the artistic team on board and our own experience in international large scale outdoor events of the highest quality, we know that it will be quite simply unforgettable.” BLINK has been developed in partnership with Turner Contemporary, Theatre Royal, Margate, Kent County Council, Thanet District Council, University of Kent, The Dreamland Trust, South East Dance and Thanet College. The event will be held on Saturday 27th August at 9:15 p.m. and is free to watch.

ART

Fascinating Kent based textile designer Gemma Hill is one to watch.

How did you get into textile design? Textile design had always been a hobby of mine since I was very young, so it was only natural for me to go on and study it at University. University teaches you technique and provides a platform to get into the profession, but if you have the talent and drive to succeed then there’s no reason why anyone can’t be successful without having been to University. You were recently featured in Vogue - how did it feel to receive recognition from such a prestigious magazine? Everyone in the textile design business dreams of being contacted by high profile magazines so to be offered the opportunity to be in Vogue was pretty amazing for me. To see my products alongside other well-known brands is so exciting and encouraging, it starts to feel like all the hard work getting this far and all the disappointments that may have been along the way were worth it. Where do you find inspiration for your designs? I observe and absorb many visual aspects around me; it could be anything from everyday occurrences to memories from my childhood. I tend to undertake a wide range of material experimentation and manipulation for every design I create so this also assists in the inspiration process. What has been your most exciting commission to date? All of my commissions I undertake are equally exciting. I love the challenge of creating something new to match a client’s requirements. Each commission

24

is different, requiring a range of skills and styles to provide a bespoke piece that will stand out for its originality, elegance and sophistication. I love seeing the look on each client’s face when they see their bespoke commission for the first time.

How long does it take to complete a product from initial stages to completion? As all of my products are handmade, the time can vary depending on the scale of the project and the materials used. In some cases it can take up to three or four weeks from initial design to completion. However, most items are completed in anything up to 2 weeks. What exciting projects do you have coming up? One of the most exciting projects I am currently involved in is taking part in the J Model Management summer fashion show at the Savoy Hotel in London. It’s a high profile event with well-known fashion designers and all sorts of international and UK press there. I am also involved in a winter art show at Godington House, put on by Ashford Visual Artists of which I am a member. If time and money were no object what would be a dream project for you? It would definitely be working with top brands worldwide to develop pieces for their catwalk shows. Where can your beautiful work be bought? All of my products are available on my website www.gemmahill.com and bespoke commissions are available on request. New outlets are always updated on my website.

PROFILE

Colin Farrell Words by Gareth Anstice

ALWAYS PERCEIVED AS BEING A BAD BOY OF THE MOVIE SCENE, COLIN FARRELL CAN UNDOUBTEBLY ALSO BE SEEN AS ONE OF BRITAIN’S BRIGHTEST STARS. HIS CAREER CONTINUES TO FLOURISH AS HE APPEARS IN THE NEW VAMPIRE FLICK; FRIGHT NIGHT, RELEASED ON 2ND SEPTEMBER. Colin Farrell was born in Dublin, Ireland in 1975. His father Eamon Farrell, was a footballer for Irish club team Shamrock Rovers F.C, where his uncle Tommy also plied his trade. Colin has two sisters; Claudine, who is currently his personal assistant, Catherine, and also a brother, Eamon Jr. Farrell first tried to find fame in the music business, but unsuccessfully auditioned for the Irish group Boyzone. He then moved on from this disappointment to join The Gaiety School of Acting. However he dropped out when he landed his first major acting role in BBC television drama; Ballykissangel. He was cast in the part of Danny Byrne in the show appearing seven times between 1998 & 1999.

In 2000, Farrell made his big break in the big screen when he was cast in the lead role of Private Roland Bozz in Tigerland, where a group of recruits go through Advanced Infantry Training at Fort Polk, Louisiana's infamous Tigerland, their last stop before fighting in Vietnam. Farrell married English actress Amelia Warner in July 2001, a marriage that only lasted four months. He even has the name "Millie" tattooed on his left ring finger a dedication to his former wife. The 2002/03 period has proved to be possibly the best received years in Farrell’s career as he appeared in box office hits Phone Booth and S.W.A.T.

27

COVER STORY Phone Booth was an intense thriller in which Farrell’s character Stuart Shepard finds himself trapped in a phone booth, pinned down by an extortionist's sniper rifle who wreaks havoc in the streets of New York. Farrell appeared alongside Samuel L Jackson, LL Cool J and Michelle Rodriguez in the gritty action movie S.W.AT, playing suspended Los Angeles S.W.A.T officer Jim Street who reunites with the other officers in a bid to foil a French crime boss from escaping from prison. Also in 2003, Farrell played a superb supporting role as the skilled villain Bullseye in Daredevil. The character is that of an assassin of perfect accuracy with deep-rooted pride of it. Farrell was encouraged to keep his Irish accent as this version of Bullseye is from Ireland. Farrell had to read into Frank Miller's Daredevil comics to understand Bullseye "because the expression on the character's faces in the comic books, and just the way they move sometimes, and the exaggerations of the character I'm playing he's so over-the-top that you do draw from that. But it's not exactly a character you can do method acting for, you know, running around New York killing people with paper clips."

grossing a total of US $164 million worldwide. Farrell’s profile of being a ‘bad boy’ was further enhanced in July 2006, when he filed a lawsuit suing his former girlfriend, Playboy model Nicole Narain, and the Internet Commerce Group (ICG) over the unauthorised public distribution of a fourteen minute sex tape that Farrell made with Narain in 2003. Farrell claims he understood the tape as being "strictly private and confidential and will take legal court actions to anyone who tries to distribute it", but it was leaked to Schmidt and ICG who tried to release it publicly. A Los Angeles judge issued an injunction barring the sale, distribution, or display of the tape.

“Farrell was encouraged to keep his Irish accent”

In late 2003, Farrell starred as a criminal who plots a bank heist with Cillian Murphy in the comedy Intermission, which held the record as highest-grossing Irish independent film in Irish box office history until 2006. 2003 was also a great year in Farrell’s private life as he and US model Kim Bordenave became parents of James Padraig Farrell, who was born on 12th September 2003.

Farrell appeared in the title role of Alexander the Great in Oliver Stone's 2004 biopic Alexander, which had some favourable reviews internationally, but was generally looked down upon by the US press and reviewers. Farrell's next film was 2005's Academy Award-nominated The New World, a historical epic that was also met with mixed reviews. Farrell played the leading role of Captain John Smith, the founder of 17th century colonial Jamestown, Virginia who falls in love with a beautiful Native American princess, Pocahontas. The film received positive reviews, despite being released in only 811 theatres worldwide and having a relatively low box office gross. 2006 brought more success in Farrell's career, as he appeared opposite Jamie Foxx in Michael Mann's action-crime film Miami Vice. The film was a box office success

Tragedy hit Farrell very soon after though, with the death of close friend Elizabeth Taylor; he was one of the few non-family members to attend her private funeral. There he recited the poems The Leaden Echo and The Golden Echo as requested by Elizabeth herself. In his latest role, Farrell appears in 3D black comedy horror; Fright Night, a remake of the 1985 Tom Holland film of the same name. Directed by Craig Gillespie, Farrell’s character Jerry Dandridge is perceived to be a vampire by next door neighbour and horror fan Charlie Brewster, played by Anton Yelchin. Charlie’s thoughts are only strengthened when mysterious deaths of girls are reported.

“In his latest role, Farrell appears in 3D black comedy horror; Fright Night”

Farrell had received his first Golden Globe nomination and win for Best Actor in his role as Ray, a hired hitman, in Martin McDonagh's ‘In Bruges’. The film has also opened the Sundance Film Festival in 2008. A year later, he starred in Terry Gilliam's film The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, alongside Christopher Plummer. He was one of the actors, along with Johnny Depp and Jude Law, who helped complete the late Heath Ledger's role after he died before filming ended. They all played ‘Imaginarium’ versions of Ledger's character Tony. Farrell also fathered his second child in 2009, when one time co-star Alicja Bachleda-Curus gave birth to their son, Henry Tadeusz Farrell on 7th October.

Farrell’s character then confronts Charlie in his own bedroom one night, attempting to kill him. After failing Charlie decides that the monster must be destroyed and recruits the help of David Tennant’s character Peter Vincent, the vampire killer from his favourite horror TV show. Looking into the future, Farrell will appear in a remake of classic film Total Recall. Len Wiseman will direct the film with a new take on the Arnold Schwarzenegger sci-fi picture about a sleeper agent who is compelled to travel to a colony on Mars. Farrell has also been announced to be starring alongside Sam Rockwell, Mickey Rourke and Christopher Walken in Seven Psychopaths, written and directed by Martin McDonagh – the director that saw Farrell win his Golden Globe for In Bruges.

GOODWILL

Kent Association for the Blind

There are thousands of registered charities across the UK catering to those in need of a helping hand. Cancer Research, Oxfam and British Red Cross are amongst the most well known charities, but there are lots more we should be aware of, including those in East Kent. Here are some you may not have heard about what they do, and who they help.

Maidstone Canterbury and Dover are home to services provided by Kent Association for the Blind. It is a UK registered charity providing rehabilitation services for people with sight impairments in Kent, Medway and Bromley. The organisation provides free, specialist support for children and adults, including those who have learning disabilities and those who are deafblind. This support enables people to be independent and to exercise choice and control over their lives. The supporters of the charity make this all possible with their enormous generosity.

Help us to help others Words by Francesca Frith

THE CHILDREN’S SOCIETY The Children’s Society defends, safeguards and protects the childhood of all children and young people throughout the UK through our network of programmes and services. The charity runs a programme in Ramsgate called Thanet Children’s Participation Project. It works directly with disabled children and young people, helping them to integrate and play a full part in their local community through their holiday and weekend activity clubs. The charity supports them to gain the skills and confidence they need to challenge discrimination and injustice. The Children’s Society recently secured Lottery funding for a two-year intergenerational programme that will provide a high-quality and effective intervention with children and young people in trouble with the law or at risk of engaging in anti-social or criminal behaviour. Their future goals are to secure future funding for disability holiday and weekend play schemes, develop and secure funding for our intergenerational programme with disabled youth and create intergenerational partnerships and develop an intergenerational strategy.

All charities rely heavily on the support and generosity of others. The charities mentioned on these pages are all open to donations and volunteers and would appreciate any help you are able to offer.

HEADWAY Headway is a charity set up to help people suffering with brain injuries. It provides four services in Kent: Ashford, Canterbury, Dover and Margate. Services throughout the UK and Channel Islands include rehabilitation programmes, carer support, social re-integration, community outreach and respite care. The services available will vary, depending on local needs and resources. In June, the Folkestone town centre branch of Sainsbury’s chose Headway as its ‘charity of the year’. It will receive funding and support from the store for one whole year, which will no doubt help the charity’s goals for Kent. The injured struggle to re-establish themselves in their altered lives, discovering there are almost no opportunities for employment, socialisation or independence. Headway East Kent is affiliated to Headway - the brain injury association, which is the only U.K. charity dedicated to the care and reintegration of those with brain injury into the community. They provide advice, support and care for those who have sustained a severe head injury and to their families or carers.

HOME START

TURNING POINT

Home Start have six branches around Kent, the Shepway group are based in Folkestone and have been working there since 1995. The first Home-Start scheme opened in Leicester in 1973. There are now over 250 Home-Start schemes in the UK.

Turning Point is the UK’s leading health and social care organisation, the social enterprise provides specialist and integrated services that meet the needs of individuals, families and communities across England and Wales. Kent’s branch is in Canterbury.

The charity helps to increase the confidence and independence of families by visiting them in their own homes to offer support, friendship and practical assistance. Workers encourage parents’ strengths and emotional well-being for the benefit of their children and try to get the fun back into family life.

The organisation has been running for over 40 years and they aim to offer integrated services to people with drug or alcohol problems, mental health issues, a learning disability or a combination of these. Turning Point can support service users to keep a stable home, find the right job, learn new skills or rebuild family relationships and help them to maximise the opportunities in their lives.

Volunteers offer time for listening and talking, help with the children, practical help and reassurance and support to use local services and resources.

Each of the Headway Houses are run by a facilitator, helped by volunteers, who are able to spend a lot of their time encouraging their members to pursue their own interests and achieve self-help to improve independence skills, leading the way for their return to community living.

KIDS

KIDS PARTY PROTOCOL!

These are the dreaded words that can send even the most organised of mums into a downward spiral of stress.

“What am I doing for my birthday party this year?”

Parties may have changed over the years but one thing remains the same – your child’s expectation that his or her birthday party is THE most important and fun day of the year and should be celebrated accordingly. Add to that the constant reminders of the amazing parties of his/her friends and the accompanying ‘playground peer pressure’ and it is no wonder that many mums feel strained as the impending birthday looms nearer. Parties of yester year The traditional party of years ago for a child that has just started school, would generally comprise a simple trip to the local play centre, with a birthday cake thrown in for good measure. But as kids have been seduced by the lavish parties featured on popular children’s TV and influenced by the myriad of themed characters that infiltrate

32

their daily lives, so expectations of what is acknowledged as a ‘good’ party have also shifted up a few gears. Not only has the bar been raised in terms of the content of the party, so too has the number of children it is deemed appropriate to invite. Children in reception no longer just invite a few ‘special’ friends to join in on the celebrations, the norm has now become a party for the entire year group. With this trend towards ‘bigger and better’ parties, many parents now elect to club together and host joint parties, sharing not only the financial burden but also the exhausting responsibility to deliver a memorable party experience. What’s hot, what’s not? As we all know, children can be quite specific about their likes and dislikes and will generally voice their preferred choice of party theme in no uncertain terms! Just as children’s toys can drift in and out of favour, the theming for birthday parties is equally transient. For the last 2-3 years, younger girls have gravitated towards fairy and princess parties whilst boys regularly requested pirate and super hero based parties - but now Mamma Mia and disco based parties dominate for the girls whilst boys regularly request a Ben 10 or Toy Story type celebration. The advent of dance based computer games, reality TV shows profiling emerging dance talent and the growing sophistication of ‘wake up and shake up’ exercise routines that mark the start of the school day, has created a generation of dance crazed youngsters, keen to strut their stuff and learn new moves! Whereas a couple of years ago, young boys would simply refuse point blank to participate in any dance related activity, times have changed and shows like Britain’s Got Talent have inspired the male masses to have a go at throwing some shapes on the dance floor!

But while 9, 10 and 11 year old girls used to be the age group that would love to bop, nowadays, these girls are simply too cool to want to join in such ‘childish’ disco activities, preferring the more selective and ‘grown up’ Hollywood themed parties, featuring the red carpet, walk of fame and of course the essential glamorous dressing up that is associated with the land of opportunity. Beauty based fun! Whilst many parents may shudder at the thought of their young daughters experimenting with beauty products at the tender age of five, some are more than happy to indulge their children’s desire to ‘look the part’. Beauty based parties for very young girls may include a dab of nail polish, a dusting of glitter and a smudge of lip gloss but the emphasis should definitely be on less is more – and on helping girls to understand how to apply make-up discreetly rather than layering it on for maximum impact. Older girls may want to go for more of a home spa approach, enjoying a range of treatments such as a mini manicure, pedicure or facials with their best chums. Top tips for success If you’ve got a child’s birthday looming, here are some top tips to ensure the party is a runaway success: Take the stress out of hosting a party by hiring in the services of an experienced children’s party entertainment company – that way both the children and you get to have fun! Always seek out an entertainer that has been recommended to you – and ensure they are CRB checked and have the necessary public liability insurance. Don’t be afraid to ask for references either! A reputable children’s entertainment company will operate with teams of entertainers – so in the event of sickness

or an accident, there is always a back up resource to cover all the party bookings. Don’t get sucked into the ‘battle of the party bags’. Parents invest too much time and £££s putting together party bags only for children to forget about them the minute they leave the event. Far better to buy one gift (from the Pound Shop) which matches the theme of the party eg a fairy wand for fairy parties or a princess book for a princess party. Alternatively a personalised gift like a chocolate bar with a personalised message can also make an inexpensive but memorable party take-away. Check if any of the children attending the party have any allergies that you or the entertainment company should be aware of and follow the trend for putting on a healthier selection of food rather than the traditional junk. The parents will certainly thank you for it! If you have opted for an action based party such as Quad Bikes make sure the company supplying the bikes include a comprehensive safety briefing and supply the correct safety equipment as part of the agreed price. If you have any children with special needs attending the party make sure you are able to adapt games or entertainment to meet with their approval. For example, some autistic children may be reluctant to join in with the group activities but can be made to feel very much part of the proceedings by being recruited as the party leader’s special helper. An experienced children’s entertainer will be more than capable of adjusting the programme to cater for any specific behavioural or physical requirements.

HISTORIC KENT

Chilham Castle

WordS by Stuart Keeler

Nestled away 6 miles from the Canterbury, lies the small parish of Chilham and at the end of its picturesque square, you’ll find the gates to the beautiful Chilham castle. Looking through the entrance gives you a glimpse of the grandeur within but it is not until you pass through and start exploring the grounds that you realise the sheer scale of the country house and its land. This is a key point that current owners Tessa and her husband Stuart Wheeler want to make clear to potential guests looking at using the house or gardens for events. Once through those gates, you feel a certain disconnection to the world outside (in a pleasant way!). For in front of you lies some 320 acres of land (incorporating Chilham Castle Park), the beautiful house and stunning views out over the Stour Valley and Wye Downs. The couple took over ownership of the house in 2002 following the success of

Stuart’s business and began restoration work on all aspects of the estate. The estate has witnessed several modifications during its lifetime so Tessa and Stuart decided not to restore the house and gardens to a particular era in time but to put their own style into it, keeping in line with the original architecture. The result is a warm and inviting home that feels lived in, instead of a stiff museum-piece showcase. The Wheelers enjoy entertaining guests within their home and are keen to open their doors to businesses who also wish to utilise the unique atmosphere for corporate functions. With a dedicated team including a personal chef using seasonal local produce, Chilham castle provides an excellent remote setting for that special occasion. The gardens, consisting of individual brick terraces, a quiet garden, kitchen garden and lake are open to the general public every second Tuesday of the month during the summer season. Those wishing to know more about the centuries of history surrounding the Castle and house can take a guided tour with author Michael Peters by special appointment. Beyond the well-kept gardens lies Chilham Park; an equestrian centre making use of the aforementioned 320 acres of land.

34

Tessa is passionate about horse riding and so has spent great care building and maintaining the stables, land and reputation to bring it up to the centre of excellence it is today. In fact, Chilham Park was recognised as a possible training ground for the 2012 Olympics. The biggest event in Chilham Park’s calendar is the annual British Eventing Horse Trials, which are to be held on the weekend of 13th-14th August. Featuring Dressage, Show Jumping and Cross Country events, utilising the extensive and varied grounds, this event attracts a lot of attention in the equestrian world and Tessa is proud to host the event every year. Open to the public, everyone is welcome and as well as the horse trials, there will be a dog show and many retail stalls.

GARDENS

FRONT GARDEN FAUX PAS Read pretty much any article which discusses transforming your outdoor space – and you can be fairly sure that all the passion and enthusiasm for creating an attractive outside room will relate only to the back garden.

36

Admittedly, most homes boast a larger space to the rear of the property than to the front, but nonetheless, isn’t it time we lavished a bit more love and attention on our fading front gardens?

they like a house”.

Sarah Beeny, the Property Ladder presenter says “First impressions count for a lot. A bad appearance can do a lot of damage. It doesn’t take a great deal of effort to change this though”.

Introduce a splash of bold colour to exterior walls by potting up some hanging baskets – and if you have a colourful front door, choose some bright zesty flowers to complement it

According to an article in The Telegraph; “front gardens are sociable spaces. Unlike our back gardens, hidden behind high fences, front gardens give something back to the street.”

So not only does a well kept front garden add charm and aesthetic appeal to the local neighbourhood, the owner of a well maintained and attractive front garden is likely to stand a far greater chance of attracting the attention of a prospective buyer.

Go for a style makeover of just the bed or border at the front of the house. Rethink your choice of plants and the layout of the bed and consider a colour theme which will deliver maximum impact

If there is a path leading up to the front door make sure it is clean and not slippery. Edging the pathway with plants will add instant pizzazz. Evergreens such as Box or Photinia work well year round to create a sense of structure. Gravel pathways offer a cost effective and elegant solution - as well as an effective burglar deterrent but be sure to keep them weed free

This infers there is a social responsibility to inject a dash of style into your front garden space, or at very least a duty to make an effort to smarten up the area to maintain local standards. And for those of us who may boast altruistic tendencies, there is a huge opportunity to share the well documented benefits of a touch of garden therapy - and for others to derive pleasure from your hard labour! Regardless of whether you care what your neighbours think, there is also a more financially driven reason why you should invest in your front garden space! The undisputed power of ‘kerb appeal’ has been well documented when it comes to attracting a buyer for your property. Anna Tyzack reports in The Telegraph; “A property’s outer appearance, its kerb appeal, is often the deal maker (or breaker) when it comes to buying a home. It takes potential buyers no more than eight seconds to decide whether or not

That said, don’t just consider your home’s kerb appeal when you are looking to sell! Make your home the pride of the street by lavishing some extra special care on the all too often neglected front garden. The failure to invest time and energy on the space directly by your front door could be due to the fact that often this area is difficult to manage and hindered by expanses of concrete or gravel. However, with careful planning and creative flair it is possible to work wonders. Some simple ideas include: •

Position a couple of imposing bay trees either side of the front door to create an immediate impression of grandeur

Arrange a selection of fragrant flowers in beautiful pots within your front garden area to encourage a welcoming ambience

GARDENS

Glamorous u Gardening The weekend before the glorious Chelsea Flower show saw the opening event for the second Jacksons Show Gardens initiative. The gardens were the result of a competition run by Jacksons Fencing aimed at garden designers with the prize being the chance to have their design built. In May last year, celebrity TV gardener Joe Swift unveiled four fantastic show gardens for Jacksons at their HQ in Kent. This year’s opening also involved Joe doing the honours - declaring three new gardens and the four original gardens, all of which have been revamped for the new season, now open to visitors. The gardens showcase Jacksons and other top quality garden suppliers products in inspirational show gardens that wouldn’t look out of place at any of

the big garden shows. The difference is, Chelsea may be over and done with by the time you read this, but Jacksons show gardens are open to the public, not just for a week like many garden shows, but all year round, allowing visitors who have never had the chance before, ample opportunity to see a show garden and get inspiration for their own garden projects. This year’s competition winners are ‘The Fragrant Front Garden’ by Justine Jobson, ‘The Chill Out Garden’ by Helen Elks-Smith and ‘The Paradise Garden’ by Mary Ann Le May. Justine was one of only two designers who thought to create a front garden using Jacksons’ steel railings and other products to ingenious use. Helen’s garden is a space to relax and unwind, with a wild flower lawn, hammock and footbridges over a moat. The Paradise Garden however is bound to cause a stir – it comes complete with five colourful water windows, ripples in the sand and a rill running down to a pool where the water is then recycled. There’s something to suit many different tastes in the gardens, from ultra-modern Jacksons prototype Perspex fencing surrounding the Paradise Garden, to a very traditional elegant new range of garden railings, eminently suitable in a period property’s front garden, as featured in the Fragrant Front garden. Also an array of products from other good quality suppliers, like the fun and funky shade sails in the Centred garden and The Lapa company’s wonderful Tiki bar in Jacksons Goes to the Seaside, which after it’s

revamp is more like Jacksons goes to the Caribbean, they are all there to delight and inspire you with your own outdoor spaces, whether they are large or small.

FOOD

Shining food stars in the East Over the past six years Kent has witnessed an explosion of artisan food producers, microbreweries and specialist food retailers setting up shop in the ‘Garden of England’. Produced in Kent, the organisation committed to championing their cause and rewarding their efforts through the prestigious Taste of Kent Awards, has seen some of the brightest stars coming from the East of the county. The traditional rural landscape of the ‘Garden of England’, with its apple orchards and hop fields, has undergone a transformation in recent decades. Traditional dairy farmers have evolved into some of the UK’s finest cheese makers, whilst vineyards (once considered the preserve of Southern Europe) are now dotted across the county. Then there are hundreds of artisan food producers, a plethora of microbreweries; farm shops in almost every village and a growth in small independent food retail specialists, with Kent’s top pubs and restaurants making it a ‘dining destination’.

40

Produced in Kent manager Julie Monkman says: “It’s a buoyant picture in these recessionary times and there is certainly a big appetite for Produced in Kent’s ‘Support Kent Buy Local’ message.”

The Plough at Stalisfield Green

Indeed, research shows that £10 spent locally is worth £25 to the local economy, compared to £10 spent in a supermarket (which is worth just £14 to the local community).

Kent Dining Pub of the Year

“Shopping at your local farm shop or independent retailer, is not only better for your health and your bank balance, it also ensures consumers are investing in local jobs and the rural economy,” says Julie.

With no karaoke, fruit machines or pool table, the two times Taste of Kent Award winners (owned by Amy and Robert Lloyd) have turned their backs on gimmicks – preferring to offer a traditional mix of great food, warm ambiance and traditional local ales, ciders, wines and juices.

The East of Kent has become a shining star of food and drink excellence, with EK companies sweeping the boards in the recent Taste of Kent Awards winning six of the 12 Produced in Kent inspired awards – designed to recognise Kent’s food and drink heroes.

Providing their customers with the best, local produce is at the heart of what The Plough does best. Every detail is considered important, so even the sausages for traditional Sausage & Mash are made in house from rare breed pork from nearby Snoad Farm.

FOOD

Godmersham Game

Kent Meat Retailer of the Year After three consecutive years of making it to the final three, the victory was particularly sweet for Godmersham Game. Run by Phil and Pam Miles, the family business provides top quality game and game products. Venison burgers and sausages are a popular specialty, but the company offers a complete range of local game to meet the rising demand in Kent, including pheasant, partridge, through mallard and wood pigeon, to wild rabbit, hare and venison.

Whitstable Brewery Best Kent Brewery

A small independent brewery which supplies to pubs, restaurants and hotels in Kent, Whitstable is part of a growing trend in microbreweries and small independent breweries. Founded in 2003 in a former dairy, Whitstable Brewery now supplies some of the biggest names in retail including Waitrose and ASDA, as well as local retailers across the south east. The company specialises in short run and custom made beers and this is undoubtedly what makes their prize-winning beers which include Native Bitter, Oyster Stout and East India Pale Ale.

Corinne’s Creative Kitchen Kent Artisan Food Producer

Based in Selling, south east of Faversham, the company was established in 2007 by the Bengali born owner Corinne Goodman. In three years Corinne’s Creative Kitchen has already come to prominence with its stunning range of Asian meals produced from local produce for direct order, corporate events and retail customers. Corinne Goodman uses her Southern Indian heritage to inspire her range of products and the vegetables are sourced from farms and farm shops within a 10 mile radius of Faversham. As well as her range of Asian meals Corinne’s Asian cookery classes are also proving extremely popular. She says: “The classes have fulfilled a long held dream for me and were a natural progression from talking to customers about ingredients to actually showing them how to put them all together to create a tasty dish.”

The Secret Garden

Kent Restaurant of the Year The secret of The Secret Garden’s success seems to be a mixture of a beautiful setting in Mersham Le Hatch, Ashford (with sumptuous views over a large Victorian walled garden and cobbled courtyard) combined with a menu that really does offer the best of Kent tuning into seasonal ingredients throughout the year. The Secret Garden is constantly looking to up its offer too, so in addition to a light lunch, afternoon tea or a gourmet evening meal, it has recently converted one of the greenhouses into a special private dining area called The Glass House. Other exciting additions include The Pantry, offering a range of home baked products, a deli and the new Cookery School which offers fascinating courses on foraging, butchery, wine tasting and gourmet experiences.

RECIPE RICHARD PHILLIPS With an early restaurant career starting off at London’s famous Savoy Hotel, going on to work alongside the likes of the Roux Brothers at La Gavaroche and then becoming Head Chef for Marco Pierre White at The Criterion, Mirabelle and Les Saveurs, it’s no wonder Richard Phillips had his own Michelin starred restaurant by the age of 29. Further excellent grounding prepared him for creating his own restaurant, having come from two years with the Schrager Hotel Group, putting together and directing teams in both the Sanderson Hotel and St Martin’s Lane, the first hotels owned by this group outside United States. After his runaway success with that first restaurant Thackerays, in Tunbridge Wells and then Hengist in Aylesford, Richard took the opportunity in 2008 to create another outstanding restaurant, this time alongside England’s leading wine producer. Having recently been awarded two AA rosettes and Kent English Restaurant of the Year 2009, Richard Phillips at Chapel Down is fast becoming East Kent’s leading restaurant experience. At the same time as being at the helm of these three thriving restaurants, Richard is now a recognised television personality, regularly appearing on popular shows including ‘Ready Steady Cook’, ‘Saturday Kitchen’ and ‘Daily Cooks Challenge’. Follow Richard on twitter @RPhillipsChef or join the facebook group ‘Richard Phillips Restaurants Kent’ for up to date restaurant information and the latest special offers.

RECIPE

Serves 4 Ingredients:

Roasted Chump of Kentish Lamb with Seasonal Baby Vegetables & Truffle Method: 1.

Season the lamb chumps with salt & pepper.

2.

Heat a little butter & oil in a heavy pan and add the sliced garlic and the lamb chumps. Sear on all sides until browned and then remove from the pan, keep all the juices and the garlic to finish the sauce.

3.

4.

Place the lamb into a roasting dish in a pre-heated oven at 200°C and roast for 15-20 minutes. In the meantime, season & add the grated cheese to the cold mashed potato and roll into four even-sized balls. Coat the potato balls with flour, roll in the beaten egg and then in the breadcrumbs until you have a nice even coating. You can do this process

4 chumps Kentish Lamb

1 clove garlic (sliced)

250g mashed potato (cooled)

50g freshly grated Kentish hard cheese or Parmesan

8 baby leeks (trimmed)

16 baby carrots (peeled)

1 bunch Kentish greens (i.e. cabbage, spring greens, kale etc.)

¾ litre lamb or beef jus

1tsp redcurrant jelly

1 egg (beaten)

8 slices black truffle

Flour & breadcrumbs for coating

Salt & pepper

twice if you wish your potatoes to have a crispier finish. 5.

Either deep fry the potato balls for 5 minutes, or brush them with oil and oven roast them for 15 minutes in the pre-heated oven.

6.

Remove your lamb from the oven and place onto a warm plate, leave to rest for 5-6 minutes.

7.

Blanch the baby leeks and carrots in a pan of salted water until cooked but still firm. Remove from the pan and keep warm. Place the greens into this pan and cook to your preference (firm or soft).

8.

Place the pan that you sealed the lamb in over a high heat. Add any juices from the roasting tin and the lamb/beef jus. Stir in the redcurrant jelly and leave to reduce by a third.

To Serve: 1.

Slice the lamb into even slices, place the cooked greens in the centre of your chosen serving plates and arrange the lamb slices on top.

2.

Place two baby leeks and four baby carrots on each plate. Strain the sauce and pour around. Balance the crispy potato ball on top of the lamb.

3.

Finish the dishes with a couple of slices of truffle on each plate.

JASON FREEDMAN: Life started for Jason as a 15-year-old kitchen porter in Canterbury on leaving school. Moving away to work in Southampton Restaurants, he rose through the ranks eventually gaining the experience to man the helm of a string of beautiful country pubs and hotels in Kent. By 1995 he was running his own successful and reputable outside-catering company. 2003 saw him purchase a traditional but very seasonal beach-side café in panoramic Minnis Bay. He seized the opportunity to transform and create a restaurant that reflected his ethos and personality. Jason champions home-cooking, fresh local produce, local suppliers and the local community. In seven short years and despite a devastating fire in 2009 he established a beacon in Thanet. The Minnis is recognised for its inventive, constantly evolving menu and has garnered a reputation for quality and ethically sourcing its products. Its testament is in attracting repeat custom from around the country, as well as the local county. The young kitchen porter is now a mature successful chef, established businessman, irrepressible, enthusiastic and above all well respected - backed by a very loyal, very local team.

MARKETS

From Challock and Chartham, through to Warehorne and Whitstable, farmers’ markets are springing up across East Kent. Now with more than a dozen to choose from, more and more people are discovering the joy of food shopping at a farmers’ market and are surprised by the value for money that the markets offer. So, each issue, EK One is going in search of some of the seasonal produce, food producers and stallholders to be found in East Kent.

Life’s a bowl of cherries Words by Sarah Orton The exceptionally hot, dry year is great for those of us who have decided to have a ‘staycation’ and enjoy the delights of Kent this summer. If you are planning a picnic, it’s the perfect time to tuck into the jewel in the berry crown... cherries. Many of EK’s Farmers’ Markets are dotted around the coast too, so you can enjoy a day out and pick up some summer fruits for your picnic. Award-winning Pine Trees Farm in Doddington, a fifth generation family business, grows 20 different cherry varieties. With three varieties of white cherries alone, Pine Trees also grows a wide variety of red cherries as well as the traditional, juicy black varieties such as Bradbourne Black and Gaucher. As Kevin Payne explained, “You just

Where to find us? East Kent’s Farmers’ Markets are either run weekly, fortnightly, or monthly. Always located in the heart of the community, some markets are held indoors in village halls, whilst others are staged outdoors. Most have a great cake and refreshments stall where you can meet up with friends and family. Lots of the farmers’ markets have themed events throughout the calendar year, so to find out what’s going on at your nearest market simply visit www.kentfarmersmarket.org.uk

wouldn’t be able to find anything close to the choice of English cherries we grow here in Kent and sell from our farmers’ market stalls, even in a large supermarket. I think why even bother picking up a punnet of foreign cherries when English cherries really are the best in the world and Kent is the cherry bowl of England!” Kevin believes that farmers’ markets provide the best format for buying cherries. “Customers can see, touch and most importantly taste the cherries. The fact that the cherries are picked so close to going on sale at the farmers’ market means customers are getting the best possible flavours and because we sell direct our prices are as much as half those of most supermarket prices.”

Fashion has brightened up just in time for summer so be brave and invest in a splash of colour! Colour blocking is really hot this season. Celebrities already working this trend include Camilla Belle, Diane Kruger and Leona Lewis, who have mixed separates of daringly different colours to build a surprisingly stylish ensemble. Orange has been a particularly popular hue; it’s best matched with purples or blues. Styling a colour blocked outfit is undoubtedly tricky. Cheryl Cole recently turned up at the US X Factor auditions in a less than impressive outfit of super long bright purple trousers and frilly orange top. The key is, if you mix bold colours, avoid too much detailing as it can just look too ‘try-hard’ rather than chic. Avoid too many accessories and let the simple lines and bold colours speak for themselves. If a colour blocked outfit is too much for you, pick one staple item like a skirt or shoes in a bright colour and work them into your existing outfit. They can transform a tired look into an eye-catching new outfit! If you want a stand-out look this summer, head to Whitefriars Canterbury!

Coloured Up

FASHION

Having visited Deborah Eastlake last Autumn to get some suggestions for the male wardrobe EK One went back to Ashford Designer Outlet to get some colourful ideas for the female wardrobe. BEFORE

AFTER

The style suite at Ashford outlet centre is a spacious and welcoming environment where stylist Deborah Eastlake begins her work from. Prior to my appointment with Deborah I was asked to fill out a form regarding what I hoped to achieve from the session. On arrival we went through the form and then moved on to colours. There are four main colour groups; Winter Cool, Spring Bright, Summer Cool and Autumn Bright. After a variety of swatches were laid over my shoulders Deborah decided that I fitted into the spring brights category meaning that my complexion is most complimented by bright colours that have a warmer, yellow hue as opposed to a blue hue. Once this was complete we headed off into the shops to find some clothes that fit the bill. With a plethora of weddings in the second half of this year I was hoping to find a dress suitable for the black tie wedding that could then be worn to a winter wedding. Beginning in Phase Eight I tried on a number of dresses I never would have chosen for myself before and was particularly drawn to a lime green empire line knee length dress which was unfortunately just too small. A fuschia dress also caught my attention but I didn’t feel it was quite dressy enough for the event. Having dabbled with the dresses for the wedding we moved on to Gap where I hoped to find something suitable for

impending holiday and also to beat my shopping nemesis - jeans. After being piled high with an assortment of summer dresses, tops, shorts and some jeans I headed off to the changing room. Being a size 11 makes buying jeans very difficult but Deborah did manage to find me a pair that were almost spot on which is good enough for me. She also found me a pair of light weight shorts and a couple of bright summer tops in colours I would never have dared try before. Post-purchases we were back on the wedding gown trail and headed to Ted Baker where there were several maxi dresses instore. Deborah suggested I try on two of these and, typically, I liked both and was completely unable to make up my mind about which would be better for the event. I may not have come away with my target dress but I did find some excellent holiday

pieces and, more importantly, had a better understanding of what colours and styles suit me. Deborah was an invaluable source of advice and made the whole experience really enjoyable.

WELLBEING

Longer, leaner, better, stronger Translating into circular toning, Gyrotonic involves a series of movements done on a piece of equipment, which at first glance wouldn’t look out of place in a torture chamber, with pulleys and cables. Tomoko takes me through the basics of the movements, designed to elongate and strengthen your entire body. Softly spoken, she encourages me to reach forwards, upwards, backwards, stretching my spine and pelvis and one minute her hand is on my back gently encouraging me to stretch that little bit more and the next it’s on my abdomen pushing it back. Warmed up and stretched to within a inch of my life, we move onto the machine for more of the same, only this time my arms are strapped into cables and next my legs (not at the same time, mind). Throughout the class, Tomoko explains the principles behind Gyrotonic while continuing to gently push my body to increase its range of motion. Although Gyrotonic isn’t aerobic work, I nevertheless feel like my body has been put through its paces and the next day I’m sore in places I didn’t know existed. Vorsprung Durch Technik A Gym with a Difference As soon as you walk into the Kieser Training centre you sense this is a gym like no other for several reasons: the absence of music, staff clad entirely in white and the slightly scary looking machines, which you won’t find in your average gym. I’m here because I have 3 compressed discs and weak back muscles which means I suffer from daily muscle spasms and twinges, a sensation not unlike getting electric shock, and I’m hoping that a course of medical strengthening therapy can increase my muscle strength. I have an assessment with the centre’s own physician, Dr Abbas, who designs a programme to target the weak areas as well as my abs, legs and shoulders. At each session I’m taken through the programme by one of the staff, one of whom was actually a patient herself initially, and although the programme, made up of less than 10 different exercises, takes just half an hour to work through, I feel I’ve worked harder and much more effectively and efficiently than I normally would in an hour in my usual gym. By the 6th session the muscle spasms are all but gone although there’s still some way to go in terms of muscle strength as the test reveals, so I sign up for another 6 sessions, after which I will be let loose to train on my own. With plenty of research to back up the efficiency of this type of targeted training, Kieser isn’t just suitable for people with injuries as everybody regardless of fitness level can benefit from it. With a bespoke programme offering optimum efficiency at its core, you can achieve the same results or better in half the time, leaving more time to enjoy life and with a stronger body I now can.

FITNESS

Aim High

Words by Lorna Morris

For many the term pole dancing conjures up imageS of darkened rooms, scantily clad girls in sky-high shoes and leering men. Unfortunately, in many cases this is an accurate picture but one that Claire Wright, of fitness company Pole Secrets and PS Studio, is trying to dispel so that more women can enjoy this fantastic exercise without the stigma. My first foray into pole dancing was in 2007. Back then studios were limited and I had to drive an hour to get to one, it also cost me a small fortune as prices really were at a premium. Everyone I told about it looked at me like I was mad and planning to become a stripper but after one class I was hooked. It was fantastic and my muscles ached for days afterwards. Unfortunately a slipped disc put off my plans to take it up but four years on, with a much recovered back, I decided to re-explore pole dancing. After trying a couple of studios and some private lessons I stumbled across Pole Secrets and their venue in Ashford, FTD Dance Centre, and I am so glad I did. Finally, a school that teaches all the skills and fitness benefits of pole dancing without the smut and high heels.

68

Pole Secrets syllabus was devised by Claire some eight years ago after she attempted to learn through lessons situated in a nightclub where drinking, smoking, high heels and thongs were all encouraged. With her background in dancing, and having run her own record label previously, Claire decided to set up a pole dancing studio that wasn’t about being sexy but about building body confidence, strength, flexibility, having fun and meeting new people. And those skyscraper heels? Not welcome. Eight years on with four-hundred students on the books, Pole Secrets now has eleven venues across London and Kent. The newest PS Studio in Maidstone is opening in July and, along with 12ft high pole dancing poles, it will offer further classes in Zumba, NYC ballet, aerial, pilates, hiphop and self-defence. The pole dancing syllabus (which has been devised from ballet) and classes, have been examined and endorsed by the European School of Osteopathy and the studio is a member

of the Fitness Industry Association. All the moves on the Pole Secrets course have been devised to be the safest possible. Grips may only vary slightly from other schools, but this slight variation could be the difference that stops you slipping off the pole and badly injuring yourself. Pole Secrets is keen to get all pole dancing schools moderated to ensure that everyone offering lessons has to go through rigorous safety checks and have designed their moves to ensure that the risk of injury is minimal. Claire is currently working with the University of Kent’s head of sports science to research and analyse the muscles used in pole dancing with the aim to design moves on the pole that target specific muscles that will best compliment a woman’s figure. One result showed that during press-ups the chest muscle was the primary target, whereas with one of the pole moves, called the fireman, eight different muscle groups were being targeted at the same time.

In addition to all these classes, research and trying to get accreditation for pole dancing, the school also offers training in fitness through their training arm, PS Pro, which includes pole qualifications, personal training qualifications and international qualifications. Many pole dancing teachers aren’t specifically trained in pole dancing and the aim of PS Pro is to give teachers all the skills they need to be the best educators and practitioners in the field. Aside from the benefits of going to a school like Pole Secrets - what can you expect from pole dancing fitness? To begin with - you will bruise. I’m not going to lie to you, it does hurt, but it does also get better. It is an amazing workout and your muscles will ache, particularly your arms and shoulders. However, the speed at which you can improve is really quite dramatic. At the beginning of a six week course you will not believe the moves that you can achieve by the end - but you can. Your feet and legs might look horrendous but your strength, flexibility and body confidence will all be increased. It is also a lot of fun and you will meet lots of people. If you’re tempted - try it today!

BEAUTY

Radiant Hair & Beauty

Your hair and beauty dilemmas answered by the experts at Harrisons.

“Lots of my friends have recently gone for a really short cut – I would love to be brave enough to do the same but how will I know if it will suit me?”

You are right – you can’t get much closer to being bang on trend this Summer than an easy to style, textured crop – it is a lightweight style that can be dressed up or dressed down. If you are unsure if it will suit you, book a consultation with one of our stylists at either salon, who will ask you all the right questions to see if it is the style for you. They will be able to recommend other styles that will also suit you so you can have a choice.

“I have recently seen lots of casual hair-up dos in magazines that look messy but very natural and girlie. How can I achieve these looks?” You are right on trend, these looks are fun and really aren’t that difficult to get right, as the whole point is that they aren’t perfect. Start by setting the hair, using heated rollers, tongs or straighteners and then use Kirby grips to pin sections back towards the crown. Leave some small sections loose, to create that messy look. Alternatively why not book in for a hair up at either of our salons and we can coach you step by step on how to achieve a selection of up-dos yourself. We also hold regular bootcamps that teach you how to professionally style your hair – call us to find out when the next one is.

“My skin is looking dull and blotchy, I am in my thirties and I have tried endless products, to no avail, can you help?”

Yes we can! Firstly we need to accurately examine the skin and identify any factors that are contributing to or causing problem areas. We can actually do this at our Sandgate salon, using our skin scanner which comes as part of our free skin consultation. The scanner identifies exactly what your skin needs to thrive and from there we can work on correcting the damage and protecting against it in the future.

Sue Harrison is the founder and owner of Harrison’s Hair Team. She opened the salon at Evegate in 1991, and has gone from a one-woman band to a large team of hair stylists. Seven years ago Sue opened the Sandgate salon, which now also offers a spa with two beauty therapists specialising in a wide range of treatments. Putting her success down to loyal clients and a strong team of staff, Sue now employs 13 staff members and still works full time herself.

70

“Over the last couple of years, I have noticed that I have gone quite thin on top! Being a gent, I don’t want to do anything too obvious that people will notice. Can you recommend anything that would make a subtle difference?” Yes – this is something we get asked a lot in the salon. Redken has recently launched a new product called Intra force, used for men and women, with naturally thinning hair. The product, consisting of a three-step system – shampoo, toner and treatment, reduces the rate of hair loss and improves hair density. Redken is so impressed with the results that it offers a full money back guarantee if you don’t notice the difference in 30 days. Intra force is available at both our salons.

Capital Gains Tax Entrepreneurs’ Relief In the past few months I have received a number of questions from my clients regarding capital gains tax and entrepreneurs’ relief. With the changes in the legislation over the past few years, I hope that this article can answer a few of the common questions people ask.

Capital Gains Tax Since the rules of how to calculate capital gains tax (CGT) changed in the budget on 22nd June 2010, I have spoken with many clients who have become confused as to what rate of tax they are due to pay on their chargeable disposals. For those who are unaware, CGT is due on the chargeable gains made on the disposal of an asset. For example, if you bought a painting for £10,000 and sold it for £27,000, you would have a chargeable gain of £17,000, which would be liable to CGT. For all assets sold before 23rd June 2010, the rate of CGT was a flat 18%. However, after 23rd June, assets are taxed as the ‘top slice’ of income. If the gain falls within an individual’s basic rate tax band, after taking their income into account, they are taxed at 18%. Gains falling above the basic rate tax band are now taxed at 28%. If you are a basic rate taxpayer and have a large amount of chargeable gains, you would use the remaining entitlement of your basic rate tax band to cover as much of these gains as possible as these would be taxed at 18%. The remaining chargeable gains would push you into being a higher rate taxpayer and therefore these remaining chargeable gains would be taxed at 28%.

Stuart Miller Client Tax Manager, Pentins smiller@pentins.co.uk 01227 763400 @pentins

Disposals between a husband and wife (or civil partners) do not give rise to chargeable gains or allowable losses. The disposal is said to be on a ‘no gain/ no loss’ basis. The acquiring spouse/ partner takes over the original base cost of the disposing spouse/partner.

Entrepreneurs’ Relief Entrepreneur’s relief is used to reduce the amount of capital gains tax on a disposal of a qualifying business asset on or after 6th April 2008. To be entitled to this relief you must have met the qualifying conditions throughout a oneyear qualifying period up to the date of disposal or the date the business has ceased to trade. Each individual is entitled to a lifetime limit of entrepreneurs’ relief on qualifying capital gain. These are as follows; For disposals on or after 6th April 2008 to 5th April 2010, £1 million For disposals on or after 6th April 2010 to 22nd June 2010, £2 million For disposals on or after 23rd June 2010, £5 million This relief is available to individuals and some trustees of settlements. However, the relief is not available to companies or personal representatives of deceased persons. To make a claim, you must put it in writing to H M Revenue & Customs by the first anniversary of the 31st January following the end of the tax year in which the qualifying disposal takes place. For a qualifying business disposal in the 2011-12 tax year, a claim for entrepreneurs’ relief must therefore be made by 31st January 2014. If you already complete a selfassessment tax return, you should make your claim on this form. Entrepreneurs’ relief can provide you with large reductions to your CGT liability. If you are making a claim in the 201112 tax year, your taxable gain will be effectively taxed at 10% rather than 18%.

Let your top down In the heat of summer, what better way is there to enjoy the pleasure of driving than cruising around in a stylish open top model?

74

MOTORS

Now I admit that the British summer is a very unpredictable one - some days we can see real scorchers, whilst on the other hand, rain can follow unexpectedly for weeks! Even so, during those brief sunny spells, we all like to participate in the same rituals – to get out and enjoy the great British summer whilst we have the chance. Long trips on the road have been made more comfortable with better equipped air conditioning and even cooled seats, but these advances still fail to match the exhilaration of driving without a roof over your head. The rush of air around you and the sounds of the outside world give you a real sense of pride as you drive about town or through the countryside. With today’s technology, owning a cabriolet is not so much of a worry as people believed they used to be.

Improvements in technology mean that both soft and hard tops can be remotely operated and complete their transformations in a mere matter of seconds. When closed, today’s cabriolets retain their beautiful looks by transforming into stylish coupés so you can continue to impress when the sun doesn’t shine. Another factor that worries people when considering a ‘drop-top’ is the available storage space in the boot, as it naturally has to incorporate the roof panels when down. Once again though, design improvements over the years have made it possible to cleverly fold the roof into a relatively small space, providing you with ample boot space for everyday tasks. Over the page, we take a look at some of the best cabriolets on the market today >>>

Audi TT Roadster Like its coupé counterpart, the new TT Roadster is especially notable for its advanced hybrid Audi Space Frame (ASF) body shell, which blends 58 % aluminium with 42 % steel to minimise weight, maximise dynamic potential and allow full exploitation of the two powerful petrol engines available. Thanks to the highly sophisticated new shell the four-cylinder version weighs just 1,295kg unladen. To retain the lightweight characteristics, the TT Roadster opts for a cloth hood which is electrohydraulically powered. Incorporating a heated glass rear window, the soft top opens or closes in just 12 seconds, and can now be operated at speeds of up to 30mph. It also stows very compactly thanks to a new Z-fold system which stacks the front section of the roof on top of the cloth to form its own cover, eliminating the need for a tonneau.

Example Details (2.0 TFSI): Engine: 1,984 cc // Power: 211 PS // Top Speed: 151 mph // 0-62 mph: 6.2 seconds // Economy: 42.2 mpg // CO2: 156 g/km

A futuristic magnetic ride system is also available as an optional extra for both TT Roadster models, which incorporates sophisticated dampers filled with a magnetorheological fluid to reduce any pitch and roll present when driving.

BMW 6 Series Convertible The BMW 6 Series Convertible offers a unique blend of distinctive styling, luxury and sporting performance. Featuring a powerfully contoured roof and sweeping bonnet, the 6 series convertible is not easily missed as it passes by. The set-back passenger compartment, long wheelbase and flat waistline continue this style trend and complete a car that simply oozes elegance. The carefully engineered roof has distinctive ‘fin’ architecture and is comprised of multiple layers to optimise acoustic dampening, thermal insulation and structural rigidity. It can be raised or lowered even on the move at speeds of up to 25mph, meaning you don’t have to worry about a place to stop if suddenly caught by an unexpected downpour. The 6 series BMW’s come with powerful turbo charged engines, delivering a whopping 320 or 407 horsepower (640i & 650i respectively), so you could use these cars as Gran Tourers for long distance driving with ease.

Example Details (640i SE): Engine: 2,979 cc // Power: 320 hp // Top Speed: 155 mph (limited) // 0-62 mph: 5.7 seconds // Economy: 35.8 mpg // CO2: 185 g/km

Renault Mégane Coupé-Cabriolet The latest Mégane range includes the very desirable looking Coupé-Cabriolet (CC) variant. Like it’s sibling models, it represents Renault’s latest advances in styling, user-friendly design, quality and efficient, rewarding performance. The CC takes some of the design cues from the new Mégane range but blends them with its own unique style to create a one-ofa-kind identity. Fundamental to this look is the folding panoramic glass roof which has been updated from previous models to be larger and more elegant with gloss black pillars and a satin chrome windscreen surround setting off the dark-tinted glass.

Example Details (GT TCe 180): Engine: 1,998 cc // Power: 180 hp // Top Speed: 140 mph // 0-62 mph: 8.6 seconds // Economy: 34.9 mpg // CO2: 188 g/km

76

Clever packaging of the large glass roof panels enables more boot space to be achieved, allowing for three cabin bags to be carried whilst the roof is down. A glass wind deflector and an optional windblocker mesh screen provide excellent wind channelling which results in a very comfortable ride, even at high speeds.

Example Details (2.0T): Engine: 1,998 cc // Power: 210 PS // Top Speed: 140 mph // 0-60 mph: 7.7 seconds // Economy: 7.8 L/100 km (36.2 mpg) // CO2: 179 g/km

Saab 9-3 Convertible Well-balanced proportions and a purposeful stance endow this car with a strong, dynamic character that, roof up or down, echoes its fun-to-drive appeal. The interior provides roomy accommodation for four adults and shares the cockpit feel and driver-focused themes of the hard top 9-3 range. The fast-acting, hydraulically-powered triple layer roof automatically self-latches to the windshield header rail and deploys fully in an impressive 20 seconds. The tonneau cover operation is unique as

Mini Convertible The humble Mini has been an iconic classic since its inception in 1959 and the love for this little car is still strong today, as the ‘new’ Mini produced by BMW continues to inspire with the latest models, including convertible options.

well. To enable quicker roof deployment, the tonneau has a unique two-stage action, rising horizontally and then moving rearwards parallel to the top of the trunk. This provides a more robust operation and gives better sealing for excellent peace of mind. These Scandinavian design features reflect Saab’s leading role in the premium convertible segment, delivering practicality and style.

Example Details (Mini Cooper Convertible): Engine: 1,598 cc // Power: 120 hp // Top Speed: 198 mph // 0-100 km/h: 9.8 seconds // Economy: 5.7 L/100 km // CO2: 137 g/km

The Mini offers a great value, fun choice in the smaller car ‘drop-top’ market and comes with all the engine choices from its hatchback big brother. A very unique optional extra for the convertible Mini comes in the form of the ‘Openometer’. This rather fun-looking dash-mounted gauge sits alongside the standard rev counter for the sole purpose of logging the amount of time you’ve been driving around with the top down! Crazy but cool.

MUSIC

Lounge on the Farm Words by Matt Bristow The weekend of 8th-10th July saw Merton Farm in Canterbury transformed from a working farm into a unique venue for 10,000 festival goers. This year’s headline acts included the likes of The Streets, Ellie Goulding and Echo and the Bunnymen. There’s something for everyone over the weekend. It has very real family values with a whole camping area devoted to ‘quiet’ camping. As well as top acts both on the Main Stage and the Meadows Stage there are top DJ’s all weekend in the cowshed, yes it really is normally a real cowshed! Theatre and Comedy, Folk and acoustic sets all over the two main fields of the venue. All the usual food and trader stalls as well. Even with an unfavourable weather forecast for Friday 8th this did nothing to dampen revellers spirits. I hadn’t been before and was only there for the Friday.

78

Once the mornings showers had passed the start of the festival was bathed in warm sunshine as the bulk of the crowds started to pour into the farm. During the early evening, rising stars Devlin and Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs gave energetic performances on the main stage that set the tone for the remainder of the day. It’s not hard to see why The Vaccines are being heralded as the next big thing, thrilling the crowd from start to finish. I have seen many seasoned festival bands that have not come close to their great set. If you get the chance to see them play live my advice is to jump at the opportunity without thinking about it! Elsewhere on the Meadow Stage the top acts were Cornershop and Cast. Both of whom performed brilliantly. Cast are touring to celebrate 15 years since the release of their seminal album ‘All Change’ I saw them live back in the 90’s and they are still as good.

The main headline act (on the main stage) for Friday was The Streets. With so much publicity surrounding Mike Skinners statement earlier this year that he’s calling it a day at the end of this festival season, I seized the brief opportunity to have a quick chat with Mike and asked about the future - his response just a grin! So I would imagine that we haven’t heard the last of Mike Skinner by any means. From the moment The Streets took to the stage to when they walked off over an hour and a half later the crowd was captivated. You would have been forgiven for thinking it was a far bigger venue and crowd. But that’s the attraction of a boutique festival such as Lounge on the Farm. I for one will be booking for the whole weekend next year and I suggest you do the same.
