Embracing Excellence: A Year in Review

Dear Scheck Hillel Families,

As we embark on a new year, it is with immense Lion Pride that I introduce to you our first-ever annual report, dedicated to the financial overview of our school’s remarkable journey throughout the past year. This report reflects our unwavering commitment to fiscal responsibility and transparency. As stewards of your trust and investments, it is our duty to keep you informed about how your support has been utilized to ensure the success of our school and make the most impact.

We are proud to present a summary of Scheck Hillel Community School’s financial results for the year 2022-2023. We continued our commitment to our mission, educating and inspiring students and providing an exceptional Jewish education.

Our net revenue for the year was $34,286,950. Our school is a non-profit and accordingly, all of our revenue is used to support our mission. Any surplus created during the year is used to make up for years when we may have had a small deficit or to engage in and support one-time capital projects. This past year, we had a slight net surplus of approximately 0.4% of revenue ($128,022).

Our expenses for the year were $34,158,927. The school runs on a tight budget, and every year we make sure it is managed efficiently - this is an ongoing task and we are always striving for further improvement.

The largest expense category is salaries (67.4% of total expenses). This is in line with other institutions of our size. Our focus is on two simultaneous priorities: to keep costs as low as possible to maintain a balanced budget and to recruit and retain top talent. The school has made every effort to keep tuition increases as low as possible. Over the last 3 years, we have kept tuition increases below inflation and below our peer group. However, we need to make sure we properly compensate teachers and staff to be able to maintain a competitive educational product. This has been especially challenging in the past 3 years, when salaries have risen at a pace far above inflation and above our tuition increase rates.

Fundraising contributions to our school remain the single greatest opportunity for immediate impact where every member of our community can make a difference. This is an area of significant importance. Our goal is to maintain an excellent academic product while keeping tuition levels affordable.

In the past few years, we have improved the capabilities in our Finance Department. We recruited an excellent CFO, Shaked Lavee, we improved our processes and procedures, we performed a thorough review of our budget, and we created a tuition setting framework and assessment. We will continue working to make sure we run an efficient and effective school.

I hope this annual report serves as a testament to our transparent finances, to show gratitude to our donor community and also to inspire and strengthen our shared commitment to the future of Jewish education and what’s to come in the new year.

We look forward to another year of growth, learning, and shared accomplishments.

Fostering Philanthropy: A Bright Year Ahead

Dear Scheck Hillel Community,

I am writing this letter with great excitement, as I have the pleasure of introducing myself as the new Chief Institutional Advancement Officer. I am thrilled to join the Scheck Hillel community.

My most recent accomplishment culminated in the completion of a $55M capital campaign at Temple Beth Am and Rambam Day School, building a new state-of-the-art school and an athletic and cultural center. I bring over a decade of experience in institutional advancement, a proven track record of leadership and innovation, as well as non-profit experience at the Greater Miami Jewish Federation.

I am committed to fostering a culture of philanthropy in alignment with our school’s values and vision.

I want to emphasize the importance of the Lion Fund, our annual campaign at Scheck Hillel. As a community, we have always believed in the power of collective effort. The Lion Fund is a testament to this belief, as it provides us with an opportunity to strengthen our commitment to our students and the educational excellence we strive to deliver.

The Lion Fund directly impacts the lives of our students by supporting their academic programs (both General and Judaic Studies), faculty development, campus enhancements, and financial aid. Our financial aid process is now more rigorous than ever: we have strengthened controls around income and lifestyle verification to ensure that our financial aid dollars end up in the hands of those families who truly need them.

Every contribution, no matter the size, is an investment in our students’ future and the future of our community.

I encourage each of you to consider making a contribution to the Lion Fund that feels meaningful to your family and one that will have an impact on our community. Your support is not just about raising funds; it’s about raising a community of learners, leaders, and innovators. Together, we can make a significant difference in the lives of our students.

Thank you for your constant support and for being an integral part of our community. I look forward to seeing the great things we will achieve together and to meeting you on campus soon!

Warm Regards,
