Food Mario’s Italian Restaurant:
A Dining Experience Like No Other Written and Photographed by Barbara King Old world charm and ambience is what you’ll feel the minute you walk in the door. Pair it with the most charming and effusive owners who make everyone feel like family, and you will know you are in for a rare dining treat. Veronique and Mo Rezaei have owned Mario’s Italian Restaurant and Club since 1997, and have over the years built it into a tradition in Tyler, which is evident tonight as guests arrive, are called by name, hugged, and steered towards their favorite dining tables. Tonight, the restaurant is an oasis from the work week, and you could literally be in any big city in the world. The walls are plastered with iconic movie stills and posters, tabletops adorned with checkered cloths and glittering candles, while the strains of Frank Sinatra play in the background. As Mo meets and seats diners, he says, “We treat everyone like friends and family, not customers.” As he stops to check on a table, Mo runs over to the fully stocked bar to pick out a special bottle of wine he recommends. Cue the singer up front (live music Friday and Saturday nights), laughter and conversation, followed by fantastic food, and it’s evident why folks keep coming back. Elaine and Roy Crawford make it a date every Friday night, and since coming to Tyler 12 years ago, have made their end of the week dinner at Mario’s a tradition. “We love the great wait staff and service and everybody knows us by name,” explained Roy. “The food portions are large,” added Elaine, “and we always have plenty to take home for lunch the next day.” The live music and ambience is unique they add, “and it’s the most authentic Italian food within 50 miles. We just love everything about Mario’s.” The family run restaurant prides itself on authentic Neapolitan cuisine, and the menu is extensive. Appetizer selections are tempting including bruschetta, sautèed mushrooms, fried zucchini, calamari, and jalapeños stuffed with cheddar cheese. Dinners are served with salad and their delectable, crunchy house bread, with olive oil and seasonings for dipping, Of course, there is pasta galore, including spaghetti and linguine, eggplant parmigiana, fettuccine, lasagna, cannelloni, and fettuccine Alfredo. We’re not done yet...shrimp and chicken delicacies include chicken marsalas, chicken piccata, shrimp Alfredo, shrimp marinara, scampi, and parmigiana. Veal lovers can take their pick from veal parmigiana, Milanese, marsalas, or piccata. The chef’s specialties are a rich presentation of entrées including blackened snapper, chicken tetrazzini, rib-eye, shrimp primavera and chicken broccoli Alfredo. And don’t forget their out-of-this world pizzas made to order, with toppings including pepperoni, mushrooms, sausage, hamburger, onions, black olives, anchovies, jalapeños, and green peppers. This evening, every table is full, and kids are scampering around, one family saying that their kids couldn’t wait to say “hi to Mo.” Kids are taken well care of too, with a special Bambini menu all their own, with lasagna, spaghetti, fettuccine Alfredo and manicotti in kids’ size portions. Every Tuesday - “Keep It Local Tuesdays” supports local restaurants by meeting and eating at a different locally-owned restaurant every Tuesday evening, usually around 7pm. Burger Grind is opening a second location on the east side of town, in the Tanglewood Shopping Center, in front of Planet Fitness. They plan to open in late September. Speaking of the north side of town, Posados Mexican Restaurant has begun construction for their second location in the building that formerly housed Pauline’s Country Buffet, 3040 W. One of the major draws for any fair are the food vendors, offering fried foods, corn dogs, funnel cakes chocolate fudge, grilled burgers and so much more. The “Pie Ladies” from Trinity Lutheran Church will be serving up their fluffy, old-fashioned, made-fromscratch pies – did you know they sold 800 of them at last year’s fair? Look for them near the south end of the food row. Several of the food vendors are celebrating the Fair’s 100th Birthday by offering some outstanding specials. A few of those are “Porter’s Unlimited,” featuring a special 3-topping funnel cake; “Smokin’ Like You Like It” will offer a brisket sandwich, chips & drink for $9; “McKinney Food Services” will offer buy two jumbo corn dogs and get a drink free up until 5pm; and “SU Amazing Foods” is going back 100 years with the pricing for a cup of gumbo for only ten cents until the pot is empty. The Old Firehouse In Edom Begins Its Seventh Season Of Art, Acoustic Concerts, and Independent Films
Beginning its 2015-16 season of entertainment at the West End of downtown Edom, The Old Firehouse is proud to announce an exciting lineup of Acoustic Music Concerts and Independent Films. Independent film screenings begin on September 26th with “Seeds of Time,” a film documenting a race against time to protect the future of our food. The film addresses a global concern facing the future of our major food source. With seed banks around the world crumbling, crop failures producing starvation and rioting, and the accelerating effects of climate change affecting farmers globally, farmers are embarking on passionate and personal journeys that may save the one resource we cannot live without: our seeds. At the conclusion of this movie, the filmmaker will be available via Skype for a question and answer session with the audience. The first performance in the singersongwriter series is October 3rd, featuring 70’s recording artist John Batdorf of the soft rock duo, “Batdorf and Rodney,” who reached the charts with singles like, “Somewhere in the Night,” “Can You See Him,” and “You Are A Song.” In addition to his duo act, John has been a singer/songwriter since the 70’s. He has an innumerable list of credits both as a composer, vocalist, staff songwriter for names like America, Kim Carnes, and England Dan, as well as several network television series. Today, he continues his session work, and is writing more of his unique musical compositions. The concert series continues with national singer/songwriters Frank Martin Gilligan on October 24th, Beth Wood on November 21st, The Sherpas on December 5th and Emily Elbert on December 26th. The film screenings continue with “White God” on October 10th, and “The Wrecking Crew” on November 7th. Admission prices for concerts are typically $12 in advance and $15 and the door, and films range between $8-$10. All events are on Saturday evenings, with concerts beginning at 7:30pm and movies at 7pm. The Old Firehouse is an intimate, smoke-free and alcohol-free “Coffeehouse,” which has made a name for itself by bringing national folk musicians and their all-original music to Edom. Celebrating 100 Years of Fair Fun
East Texas Burn Run 2015, Gladewater
By Gini Rainey Stating that it is all about charitable and educational purposes through an organized annual event that promotes entertainment and the spirit of competition, The East Texas State Fair will celebrate its 100th Birthday from Friday, September 25th Saturday, October 4th. Taking place at the fairgrounds at 2112 W. Front Street in Tyler, the East Texas State Fair is committed to agricultural heritage, families and service to the community. The Fair’s mission is also about helping create commerce for Tyler and Smith County by providing venues for others to utilize and by drawing young and old alike to the complex for this annual fun fall event. The 100th Birthday Celebration will include special attractions and events, specific categories in contests, and unique items from their vendors. Among those events will be the AgriWorld Display that will offer a unique educational opportunity to help students relate the foods, fibers, and other products they use and consume every day to the industries that produce them. Recent surveys have indicated that, in this age of processed food and items, many children are unable to identify animals and produce as they appear prior to processing. Another unique 100th Celebration opportunity for fair-goers will be the Time Capsule Project that invites schools and organizations to participate by bringing items of interest, i.e. photos, event programs, small mascots, artwork, poems, memorabilia, etc., in a standard, clear plastic shoe box with secure lid to become a part of the capsule. In line with this year’s celebration, the annual photography contest will feature a special Heritage and History category that will showcase area landmarks. Entries will be on display throughout the Harvey Convention Center and provide an opportunity for photographers of all ages to enter their work in several categories in addition to Heritage and History. Additionally, the Creative Arts Contests have divisions that include art, sewing, canned foods, produce, crochet, knitting, quilts, collections, dolls, woodworking, and more. These entries will be showcased in Building A during the fair. If you love dogs - and really, who among us can resist a dog’s soulful, loving eyes - you will not want to miss the “K-9 In Flight’s Ultimate K9 Sports Show” at the Fair. These aren’t just dogs. They’re billed as high-flying, high-energy canine athletes who wow crowds with their acrobatic feats - skilled dock diving, high jumping and Frisbee catching. All of the dogs performing are either rescued or adopted from shelters and have been featured in magazines and newspapers around the country and seen on TV. Additionally, daredevil BMX cyclists and skateboarders, an escape artist who “cheats” death and awe-inspiring creations of sandscape artists will help to round out the 100th Birthday Celebration. Always a great draw at the East Texas State Fair is Senior Day. This year that day will be held on Friday, September 25th in Harvey Convention Center. Seniors, ages 55 or better, are invited to the 46th Annual Senior Day for a full day of activities, entertainment, food, and fun. Admission is free to the Fair for this age group until 6pm on this day. Entertainment will be presented on the Harvey Hall stage and Bingo and other games will be taking place in the Mayfair Building during the day. Lots of recognitions will be made for special seniors, as well as drawings for door prizes. The Junior Livestock Shows and the Open Livestock Shows are always a huge draw and show off some of the finest animals you will find, not only from this area, but also from across Texas, Oklahoma, and beyond. Known to bring in over 700 exhibitors and 1800 entries, the East Texas State Fair is a great opportunity for them to earn awards against outstanding competition while retaining a familial atmosphere among the competitors. The largest draws come from the Junior Livestock show, and everyone who is a member of a Texas FFA or 4H Club is eligible. Every win garners competition points that apply towards a shot at awards at the end of the year. These events draw, not only the participants, but also an inordinate number of interested onlookers. Additionally, a Laser Show and Pyrotechnic Show will take place on the main stage at 9pm most weeknights and after 10pm on weekends. The time will vary nightly depending on the main stage entertainment. One of the major draws for any fair are the food vendors, and The East Texas Fair is no exception. With an average annual attendance of 250,000, the Fair’s vendors will offer fried foods, corn dogs, funnel cakes, chocolate fudge, grilled burgers, and so much more. The “Pie Ladies” from Trinity Lutheran Church will be serving up their fluffy, old-fashioned, made-from-scratch pies – did you know they sold 800 of them at last year’s fair? This will be the 30th year for the Pie Ladies at the Fair. Look for them near the south end of the food row. Several of the food vendor’s scheduled for this year’s Fair are joining in the celebration by offering some outstanding specials. It is all about running in East Texas - running through the country, around the airport, along the highway, through the neighborhoods and back in town which make this a spectacular route. Plus, the hills will make it a challenging course. The marathon course includes shaded pastoral parts in the middle and once you get to mile 15, the last 11 miles are in the Azalea Trail area that is dotted with stately homes and is very beautiful. The half marathon, with the exception of the first two miles, is run in the Azalea Trail area. The marathon starts at 7:30am and the Half Marathon at 8am. Music Tuxedo Cats:
Upscale Rock and Roll By Reid Kerr From local restaurants, to clubs, to weddings and parties, from playing on the porch at FRESH, to the Back Porch in Kilgore, to AT&T Stadium, the Tuxedo Cats seem to be everywhere these days. “We want to be professional and be in business with what we’re doing,” guitarist and founder Todd Rinlee said. “We want to provide a service for Tyler and East Texas.” Rinlee and Mike Harper (drums) have played together for about a decade, and the current incarnation of the Tuxedo Cats with Steve Graham (bass) and Scott “Scotty G” Garrison (keyboards) has been in place for more than five years. Harper is the senior member of the group, inspired as a young boy in the same way many other impressionable future musicians were, by seeing the Beatles play on the Ed Sullivan Show in 1964. The rest of the band is a few years younger but still from the same musical era, and Harper said that connection extends into their fans. “We’re playing classic rock and for our audience, it’s right down memory lane,” Harper said. “It’s a good feel for them. If you’re enjoying it, they come right along. That’s the era we grew up in and love from our childhood. However, in East Texas you’ve got to play some country once in a while. Todd and Scotty have a lot of experience in country, so they’re teaching me. We can also lighten up for a dinner setting with jazz standards and things like that.”
While the Tuxedo Cats are at home in a club or bar setting, their musicianship also makes them a hot ticket for upscale gigs such as weddings and ballroom galas. With more than a century of combined experience, the Cats take pride in being able to adjust their set list to meet almost any audience. “It’s all about where we’re playing,” Rinlee said. “If we’re playing for a ballroom dance group, we’re going to give them a lot of jazz standards. At a wedding, we’re not going to play blues, just love songs. When we play places around town, we’re going to try and play for who’s there. We’re not trying to get famous and write our own songs at this point, we’re just having fun.” “We’ve never had a concrete set list for every gig,” Harper agreed. “We feel the atmosphere of the room and go with that. It definitely changes with the wind, and how the crowd wants to go. I want people to have fun, and I want to do more than just have a good sound. I want to engage with them, because fun is contagious. Some musicians are too serious, and it looks almost painful. I want them to enjoy us playing for them.” With the Tuxedo Cats in high demand and playing most weekends, the band said they try and schedule gigs in places where their fans can relax and enjoy themselves. “We want people to know they can come see a great show without fighting Dallas traffic,” Rinlee said. “Or go some place where it’s unpleasant. What’s important to us is that we’re playing places that are family environments, and to the best of our ability. Rather than playing the normal venues, we’re always after weddings, Christmas parties, that sort of things. We stay busy.” “We’re very much a team,” Harper said, “We’re all from the same era, we’re all Christians, and these are just great guys that I’m happy to be in a band with. We’re playing just about every weekend now, and if my grandson comes, we don’t have to worry about what he hears. We do attract a Baby Boomer crowd, so their kids and their grand kids come along with them, and we love that.”
The Tuxedo Cats continue to take a wide range of gigs almost every weekend, including playing with Grammy winner Linda Davis on September 12th at the Cascades for the charity event, “Night of Superstars.” With all four members of the band in their forties and older, they all seem thankful for the chance to keep playing the music they grew up loving. “It’s thrilling,” Rinlee said. “It’s never a dull moment. It’s a lot of work and we love it. We’ve all had jobs before where we’d rather take a beating than get up and go to work, and now to be able to do this and love it so much and do it regularly. It’s just a blast. We all feel very blessed that we’re able to do this.” “As long as I’m able,” Harper said, “I’ll be playing. It’s one of the few things I feel comfortable with. Center Stage Music: A Staple in the Industry Written and Photographed by Barbara King It’s been a staple in the Tyler music world since 1994 and still going strong. Center Stage Music, in Green Acres Shopping Center in Tyler, has seen generations of musicians come through the doors to buy instruments, take lessons and get their precious instruments repaired. Tyler native and owner Jim Holley has been a working musician for years, playing bass guitar, and the store has “always been part of the grand plan,” he explains. Seated behind the counter, surrounded by hanging displays of acoustic and electric guitars and bass, he is truly in his element. The store carries everything from guitars to drum kits, keyboards and amps, guitar picks and straps, chimes and drumsticks, with prices ranging from $50 to $5000 and, “everything in between,” says Holley. “We have a lot of parents come in to get a really cool first guitar as a gift for their children.” The store carries a wide variety of both new and used instruments with something for everyone. “We’ve been here for a lifetime,” jokes Holley, “and the greatest thing is to be able to see kids learn how to play and be able to pick up a guitar and rock
out to a song.” Linda Heatley is the energetic teacher of private piano and voice lessons and has taught a wide variety of ages to sing and play in the studio rooms at the back of the store. “We’ve had little ones come in to learn piano and 80 year olds wanting to sing in church and want some training to hit the high notes,” she explained. “We get students from UT Tyler and TJC and students from all the area schools.” Jenna Ogletree, 9, is here for her one-hour lesson of both piano and voice. Her eyes light up when she talks about how much she loves to play and sing, and the 4th grader from Jack Elementary can’t wait to get her lesson started. Full of self-confidence, she seats herself down and begins to play a Taylor Swift song she is just beginning to learn. Jenna’s mom, Lynette, says that the lessons have “taught Jenna so
much about discipline, and have boosted her confidence. She has something that is all hers, and she is so passionate about it. Her aunt gave her a keyboard for Christmas one year and she has been playing ever since. Singing and playing helps her set achievable goals, and challenges her to grow and constantly be learning new things. Music helps her succeed in every area of her life.” Holley explains that it takes a lifetime to learn an instrument, but that the basics to strum the chords for Kumbayah at a campfire can be learned too. “Our private lessons are highly popular because there will always be another kid who loves the idea of playing a guitar and needs entry level instruction to begin the journey into music. We have lots of siblings who take lessons, and we’ve seen young kids turn into working musicians over the years we’ve been here,
and that’s an awesome thing to see happen. It is very rewarding.” Sixteen year old Katie Edwards, a junior at Robert E. Lee, has been taking voice lessons since she was seven years old. “I think of the voice as art,” she explains. Along with singing, she is also a model and actress, and aspires to be “a triple threat when I audition. Singing is a huge part of my life, and I want to travel, perform, and see the world.” Center Stage Music is a thriving part of Tyler’s music community. “Rock Out Hunger 2” Concert: Saturday, September 26th at Click’s Live
What if we booked a major rock concert event in Tyler in September that is open to all ages and features some major guest appearances? Sounds great already doesn’t it? What if we create this event as an opportunity to affect our community in a very positive way? That is exactly what the annual “Rock Out Hunger 2” Concert is all about. Hunger is on the rise and we need your help. One only needs to visit the East Texas Food Bank to witness the growing trend of people struggling to find their next meal. Hunger in America is a very real problem. Fifty million Americans, or one in six, are ‘food insecure,’ according to the UDSA definition, meaning they are often forced to skip meals, eat less at meals, buy cheap non-nutritious food or sometimes feed their children but not themselves. The overall purpose is to support the East Texas Food Bank’s “Hunger Action Month” efforts, which culminates with this second annual concert. “Rock Out Hunger 2” is scheduled for Saturday, September 26th, 5pm-1am, at Click’s Live in Tyler. The event will serve as Rocket Queen’s record release party as well. Tyler Junior College’s song-and-dance troupe Harmony & Understanding is tuning up for the 2015-2016 year. Their first performances of the year will be at the opening day of the East Texas State Fair on Friday, September 25th. During the fall semester, Harmony & Understanding will perform for local civic organizations including Marvin United Methodist Church GrownUps, Rose Capital Retired Military Officers Association, East Texas Vought Aircraft Retirees, Hideaway Lake Community Club, and Santa’s Village, the annual fundraising event for Tyler’s Breckenridge Village. Art, Tank Girl, and Anthropomorphism By Derrick White “Everyone you will ever meet knows something you don’t,” is a quote attributed to Bill Nye (yes, the science guy). In my life I’ve found this to be true. My father-in-law used to be able to diagnose and talk me through how to fix the engine on my truck from my description of the problem over the phone, yet he needed me to get Netflix working on his television. There is so much information I don’t know, too much. It is overwhelming. The things I don’t know far outnumber the things I do. The world around us is changing so rapidly, who can keep up? There are new technologies, cultures, subcultures, and countercultures. I get confused. For example, I only know the name of one Pokémon character and there are hundreds of them. I am unsure about the correct pronunciation of the word Manga. Pokémon is an anime, a term used for Japanese animated cartoons, created by Satoshi Tajiri. Manga is an anime-style comic book you read backwards. However, I do know both are full of wild, imaginative mythology, unbelievable creatures, and intense fantasy quests and challenges. I know they are wildly popular with a wide ranging audience. I am unsure if there is any difference between an anime convention and a cosplay gathering, so if you are thinking of getting into any of this, please check out WikiHows.com – “How to Attend an Anime Convention in 14 Easy Steps.” I know embedded in this subculture of costumes and cartoons, among the weirdos and sexual deviants, are some of the most clever, intelligent, gifted, creative, uninhibited, and talented people on the planet - believe it or not. MK Northum is a local East Texas printmaker, illustrator, and designer. I do not know if she is interested in any of the examples listed above but she does have some eccentric colored hair each time I see her and she has dressed up as a very convincing Tank Girl (a British comic book character created by Jamie Hewlett and Alan Martin, originally drawn by Hewlett. Post-apocalyptic Tank Girl lives in and operates a tank, undertakes a series of missions for a vague establishment before going rogue. The story centers on her misadventures with her boyfriend, Booga, a mutant kangaroo). MK Northum is a genuine, vivacious, and sociable person. Her interests are sincere and authentic and not trendy. She allows her attentions to permeate her life and her art. MK is not a poser, she is the real deal and she is an intelligent, gifted, creative, and talented person. Her natural gift for illustration is one of the most prolific I’ve ever experienced in my entire teaching career. Her artwork reflects a range from comic strip narratives with quick gestural attitudes to serious introspective self-portraits to anthropomorphic fantasy creatures giving human characteristics to animals, plants, or objects. Currently, MK Northum is doing freelance art and design work creating posters and flyers for events around Tyler. Her experience with digital illustration and computer work is self-taught (i.e. Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, etc.). Previously, she trained in both painting and printmaking at Tyler Junior College, where she was active as Vice President and then President of the TJC Art Club. She then transferred to the University of Texas at Tyler. MK earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from UT Tyler in 2015. “Since carving my first linocut print under the guidance of Chris Stewart, former TJC art department chair, it stuck with me. I thought I was going to be a painter and do these large-scale paintings, but after a couple of years I realized printmaking was where I needed to be. For my senior exhibition at UT Tyler, all of my work consisted of linocut and mono-print collages,” states the artist. She adds, “I work in a variety of media, but now I’m fresh out of college, it’s hard for me to justify buying a printing press, solely for printmaking purposes. I am currently focusing on graphic design and digital art.” When asked what started her on the path to becoming a visual artist, she replied, “Watching my dad try to teach me how to draw, except his drawing ended up being a somewhat silly and nightmarish rendition of the cover art on “The Lion King’s” VHS box. Afterwards, I was hooked. I drew every day, and a word of advice: it is the only way you can become better at drawing. Draw each day, even if it’s a doodle on a Post-It note, draw EVERY day. Right now I personally keep two sketchbooks, one small to take everywhere, and a large one for home, but I try to fit in at least one sketch or doodle each day.” MK’s perspective of what an artist can be has changed dramatically over the years. When she was younger she imagined she would become a famous artist and work for Disney right after college. Now, after experiencing the competitive nature of the art world, she is setting pragmatic goals for herself, and staying on task until reaching them. “If I actually end up working for Disney, Cartoon Network, or a design firm, it would be fantastic, but it all depends on my skill level and how hard I’m willing to work to achieve it. I think I have a good perspective on the art world, but if you constantly compare your art
to other people’s art, you’re wasting time,” advises MK. MK goes through phases of favorite artists, but currently she is influenced by a wide variety including Joanne Nam (figurative, Korean artist living and working in Los Angeles), Sam Wolfe Connelly (nightmarish, illustrative artist from New York), Gary Taxali (vintage comics and advertising, graphic design), Frida Kahlo (surrealist, Mexican painter best known for her self-portraits), and Egon Schiele (Austrian, elongated figurative painter). “The most frustrating thing about being an artist is getting into a mental block, and not thinking you’re good enough or making as much art as someone else. For three years I made crappy work, in order to make myself make artwork, but once I found my niche and felt like I was making good work, it was like an epiphany and everything came together instinctively. “Intertwined: Shared Endeavor:” A TMA Art of Peace Exhibit “Art can be a powerful way to convey cultural issues.” That idea led local peacemakers to partner with the Tyler Museum of Art (TMA) to host an exhibition of visual art last September, as part of the annual Art of Peace, Tyler celebration. Once again this year, the two organizations are collaborating to highlight social consciousness. From Tuesday, September 8th, to Sunday, September 13th, the juried work of area artists will be on display in the exhibition, “Intertwined: Shared Endeavor,” a title that correlates with the shared 2015 Art of Peace, Tyler and 2015 United Nations Peace Day theme of “Partnerships for Peace.” The selected pieces will be displayed in the Museum lobby and Education Classroom. UT Tyler to Present Studio Art Faculty Exhibition The University of Texas at Tyler Meadows Gallery will feature the Studio Art Faculty Exhibition this month. UT Tyler Tyler faculty presenting works in this exhibition are Merrie Wright, James R. Pace, Gary Hatcher, Alexis Serio, Dewane Hughes and Abhidyna Ghugh. A public reception will be 6-7:30pm, Thursday, September 3rd at the gallery. The pieces are in place, and the monumental works of acclaimed granite sculptor Candyce Garrett are on view for the public with the outdoor installation, “Rock Walk” beginning Sunday, September 27th and running through Sunday, May 22nd, 2016. A collaboration between the Tyler Museum of Art (TMA) and Tyler Junior College with support from presenting sponsor, the Julietta Jarvis Foundation, Inc., “Rock Walk” features 13 of Garrett’s large-scale stone sculptures placed at strategic locations on the grounds of the TMA. Based in Taos, New Mexico, Garrett spent years working in various sculpture media including clay, wood, limestone and marble before moving to the challenges of granite as an apprentice to legendary sculptor Jesus Moroles. Often abstract in design but conveying simple, relatable themes, her granite work draws much of its inspiration from the rustic, expansive landscapes of the desert Southwest. Garrett’s work is on display in several prominent public spaces throughout the country, including the Texas State Capitol in Austin, Santa Fe Botanical Gardens and the AT&T Center (home of the San Antonio Spurs). She is a veteran of several exhibitions and installations featuring several of her works, but “Rock Walk” marks the first time the sculptor has tackled a public art installation of this scope and size. Through September 13th - Reflections of East Texas - Five talented and versatile artists with strong ties to the region are in the spotlight with the Tyler Museum of Art’s current exhibition, “Reflections of East Texas.” Organized by the TMA and co-curated by the Museum’s Jon Perry and Derek Frazier, “Reflections” features more than 30 works across a broad spectrum of media by artists Keith Carter, Ted Ellis, Diane Frossard, Mike Perry, and Franklin Demetrius Willis. Several of the works included in the exhibition recently were completed and will be seen by the public for the first time. “This exhibition is a homecoming to East Texas, if you will,” Jon Perry said. “Each of these remarkably diverse artists, in his or her unique way, shows how profoundly they have been influenced by their experiences in this region and how they continue to evoke those memories in their work. The subject matter is varied, the geographical boundaries are loose - from the Piney Woods to the Gulf Coast - but Derek and I hope audiences come away with a genuine sense of moods and feelings that characterize a broader sense of the East Texas experience. TMA Builds Up to The Art of the Brick® - The storied toy building of countless childhood creations take form as fine art with the unique vision of Nathan Sawaya in “The Art of the Brick,” the current major exhibition on exhibit through September 13th. “The Art of the Brick®” features more than 20 large-scale sculptures crafted only from LEGO® bricks by Sawaya. Like most young kids, Sawaya started playing with LEGOs at a young age. But unlike most kids, Sawaya never stopped building, creating and exploring his own imagination. A Festival of Diversity and Peace By Gini Rainey The 5th Annual “Art of Peace, Tyler” will be celebrated September 8th-21st with a series of peace-themed events, beginning with the opening of a wonderful art exhibit at the Tyler Museum of Art on September 8th and lasting until the actual International Day of Peace on September 21st. In just a short time, this mini-festival has grown from an afternoon of programs to a two-week long series of peace-activities and programs throughout Tyler. This community-wide event celebrates the United Nations International Day of Peace and encourages community spirit. The aim of the Art of Peace, Tyler is to promote a spirit of cooperation and community through fellowship, dialogue, music, poetry, and art. In addition to the on-going exhibit at the Tyler Museum of Art (TMA), two special days of worship are scheduled for the event. On Sunday, September 13th, 11am-12pm, an Art of Peace worship service will be held at Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Tyler, 1629 Old Omen Road and will feature special guest speaker Reverend Tamara Lebak. On Sunday, September 20th, 10:30-11:30am, the second Art of Peace worship service will be held at Tyler Unity Center of Practical Christianity, 14024 Hwy. 155 South in Tyler with the pastor and peace advocate Reverend Max Lafser as leader. The community is invited to both services. Both are free to attend. On Tuesday, September 15th at 5:30pm in Apache Rooms 3 & 4 of the Tyler Junior College Rogers Center, join local peace advocates, community leaders, families, and students to explore how we can be “peace seekers” right here in East Texas. This event will be led by Peacemakers Ann Faulkner and Toni Ferrell and is free and open to the public. On Wednesday, September 16th at 7pm a community peace and praise service will be held at the New Life Community Church, 1201 NNW Loop 323, Tyler (across from John Tyler High School). This will be an opportunity to celebrate peace as a diverse community comes together. Thursday, September 17th, 5-6pm, be a source of peace and support for Bethesda Community Clinic by shopping at Hangers of Hope, “a thrift store on a mission,” located at 3500 S. Broadway in Tyler. Friday, September 18th, 12-1pm, join with a group of dedicated peace-niks, who encourage Tylerites to wage peace. Make a sign of your own and help to promote peace in Tyler.
On Sunday, September 13th and Sunday, September 20th visit the Victory Over Violence exhibit, “Century of Women,” that is being co-sponsored by Art of Peace, Tyler and Soka Gakkai International at the Tyler Public Library, 210 S. College in Tyler. The Victory Over Violence Campaign is a growing network of global citizens committed to building the culture of peace through dialogue and action and highlighting the critical role of women in creating a peaceful future. Saturday, September 19th, 10am-2pm, is the Boys and Girls Club Day for Kids at Bergfeld Park in Tyler. The Art of Peace Festival will be sponsoring a booth with information and some fun prizes. Ruthie Foster will be featured in concert at Liberty Hall, downtown Tyler, on Saturday, September 19th at 8pm. The evening of music and inspiration with this Grammynominated singer and songwriter is a collaboration between the Art of Peace and Liberty Hall. On Monday, September 21st at 12pm at St. Paul Children’s Foundation, 1358 E. The Peace Pole proclaims, “May Peace Prevail on Earth” in multiple languages as a reminder of our communal desires for peace, especially for children. Erwin, Tyler, come celebrate the 2015 United Nations International Day of Peace by sharing a simple meal with local peacemakers, loved ones, and new friends from our community. Local student artists have made beautiful pottery bowls for the event. Love offerings of cash and peanut butter and jelly will go to St. Paul’s Children’s Foundation. The dinner will be a buffet and will cost $15 per person and $5 for students. Preregistration is required. Following the Peace Meal you can be a part of the Living Peace Sign by standing together and holding electronic candles. Photographers will capture the moment. All peacemakers are welcome. It’s time to plan on joining in on the fun at Lindale Community Theatre as they offer three exciting and fun Fall Drama Classes that will provide something for everyone ages 5-18. “Crazy Clowns and Fantastic Fairies: Shakespeare’s Wackiest Roles” is geared for students ages 5-8. At a cost of $150 per student, this class is 10-weeks long and will instruct the students from the funniest mishaps to the most magical spells that are found in Shakespeare’s works. His writings are full of fascinating characters that even the youngest actors can bring to life. This class will explore the language, works, and characters of Shakespeare in fun and invigorating ways that will leave your students with a life-long love of some of the most important dramatic works of all time. Classes are held on Tuesdays from 4:15-5:45pm beginning September 8th and continuing until November 10th (no class November 3rd). A final performance will be held on Tuesday, November 17th at 5pm “Folktales from Around the World” is planned for students ages 9-12 and costs $250 per student for 10-weeks of instruction. Through different culture’s stories, they will learn of their history, people, values, and so much more. Experiencing these stories as an actor allows students to engage with these cultures on a personal level, all while enjoying the thrill of performing as animals, mythical creatures, and powerful forces of nature. Culminating in a performance that samples the world through folktales, this class will give students the ability to travel far and wide, without ever leaving the theater. Classes are held on Saturdays from 8:30am-12 noon, September 5th-December 5th (no class September 19th, October 31st, November 7th, or November 28th) Final performance for this class will be on Saturday, December 5th at 11am. “Peter/Wendy by Jeremy Bloom” is scheduled for students ages 13-18 and will cost $250 per student for 10-weeks of instruction. “In this lyrical, atmospheric interpretation of Peter Pan, Jeremy Bloom strips the familiar story down to its emotional essence.” (Playscripts, Inc.) In this full production of a beautiful work, students will learn about every role in the theatre, both on stage and backstage. This highly collaborative class will teach students the value of teamwork, creativity, and innovation - all of which are essential not only to theatre, but to life. They are bound by George’s devotion and Lennie’s “pathetic helplessness.” George’s guardianship keeps Lennie out of trouble, but we soon see this is a slippery slope. Lennie’s displays of love result in several deaths ranging from mice and puppies to a beautiful woman. Eventually, in the face of a lynch mob, George kills Lennie to put him out of his misery. “The Weird Sisters” by Eleanor Brown
A New York Times best-seller, “The Weird Sisters” is an interesting novel about three sisters whose brainiac father’s main method of communication is by using quotes from William Shakespeare. In fact, he is so enamored by the Bard that the girls are named after three of his characters: Rose (Rosalind, “As You Like It”), Bean (Bianca, “Taming of the Shrew”) and Cordy (Cordelia, “King Lear”). However, their mother is still stuck somewhere in the peace-loving 60’s and has been diagnosed with breast cancer. Wonderfully written, this is a book you’ll have trouble putting down. Although not new to the market (published in 2011), the interwoven lives of the three sisters gives a fresh look at the relationships in a family filled with people who don’t know how to live their own lives, nor how to communicate with one another. This tale of relationships between siblings is not a new concept, but Brown’s take on the three sisters, their ethereal parents, and life in a college town was unique. Each one of the girls returned home, trying to escape a life that was in shambles, and consequently, are attempting to get their collective acts together while getting help and encouragement from one another. What they found was a mother facing a serious illness who, although wouldn’t admit it, needed their love and support to continue through her own healing process. This compelling, coming-to-adulthood story follows the different paths that each of the sisters has chosen and aren’t necessarily happy with. Through the process of their discovering that they pretty much define themselves by the relationships and characteristics of the other sisters, the reader is able to pretty much take a bird’s eye view as the process unfolds. “Sisters,” told in an unusual, but fitting, collective first person “we” voice, makes for some interesting Escher-like shifts in perspective as the story seamlessly moves among the different sisters lives as they comment on their entanglements and deliver sisterly judgements and reactions to each other. Although the book got off to a slow start, and I had to give some extra thought to the Shakespeare lines for better clarification. When it was all said and done, this turned out to be a great read that I found hard to put down. Copyright 2011 – Berkley Rating: 4 out of 5
“Cary Grant: Dark Angel” by Geoffrey Wansell

Geoffrey Wansell, an acclaimed biographer and former reporter and feature writer for “London Times,” columnist for the “Observer” and the “Sunday Telegraph,” takes on the awesome task of writing a biography about one of the most iconic leading men that has come out of Hollywood. From his humble beginnings as Archibald Leach in England, to the star-studded glamour of the big screen, Cary Grant’s life is laid out for the reader in straight-forward language, with very few punches pulled. Cary Grant had a fairly unusual, challenging life, and was blessed, yet riddled, with different issues from his childhood. Even though, as an adult, he kept much of his private life to himself, and had many emotional insecurities, Grant was able to create a cool, suave, meticulous character that he shared with the public who adored and revered him. Unfortunately for me, I read this book on my Kindle and just now discovered that originally it was published in a coffee table book format and was filled with, apparently, wonderful photographs that gave a visual backdrop to Grant’s life story. Somehow I can’t help but think the visual would have greatly enhanced the reading experience of this book. Although Wansell gave some insight into the complexity of Grant, I had a lot of trouble staying
with this book. In my opinion, this book, with all of the interesting stories about Grant’s life, is really more of a chronological account of the life and times of Cary Grant, and although all the speculation in the world can be made about what might have been going through his mind and motivating him, Grant is the only one who knows for sure where that truth lay. “Burn Down the Ground: A Memoir” by Kambri Crews In this critically acclaimed and “New York Times” best-seller, Kambri Crews tells the story of her life growing up with two Deaf parents in a voice that is fresh, fearless, and singular. This is another one of those books that I found difficult to put down. With Crews telling the story about her family’s struggle to repair their broken relationship by moving the family into the woods deep in rural Texas, you had to question the wisdom of such a move. Unfortunately it didn’t quite work out the way they had planned and had to abandon the woods to move into Ft. Worth and a more advantageous job market. Through Kambri’s brilliant use of descriptions and character development, she had me laughing, crying, becoming angry, and feeling intense sorrow, as I was pulled into the riveting story about her family’s attempt to find a semblance of normalcy in spite of several set-backs. The major unsettling undercurrent in the Crew’s family was Kambri’s father’s inability to escape the demons that seemed to plague him, and that ultimately succeeded in pulling him in directions that landed him in jail and serving a 20 year sentence. If nothing else, “Burn Down the Ground” illustrates the infuriating complexities of life. There are so many sides to every story, and as much as we would like to have them fit neatly into a box, they just can’t and won’t. Kambri learned through living how to survive, and through that survival she has become an incredible writer who isn’t afraid to tell it like it was. By leading us through the challenges she faced, Crew helps us to become much more wise and compassionate to ourselves and others when life gets messy and doesn’t go ‘according to plan.’ The honesty and rawness of this book makes it a mustread if you’re wanting to gain the perspective of the life of someone who has dealt with things most of us will never know, and survived to tell about it, in an completely honest and mature way. Banned Books Week Celebrated at the Library
One of the most important principles of the United States is freedom of expression. The ability to freely exchange ideas and opinions is a fundamental part of any democracy. Unfortunately, there are those that, while acting with the best of intentions, would deny others that right by limiting what others can read. “Banning books gives us silence when we need speech. It closes our ears when we need to listen. It makes us blind when we need sight,” said author Stephen Chbosky. The last week of September, September 20th26th, is Banned Books Week. Along with other libraries across the country, all month long, your Tyler Public Library will be celebrating the freedom to read. Check out the display of banned and challenged books and get your “mug shot” taken holding one of them. “Literary Resistance” wristbands will also be available for a donation. By focusing on efforts across the country to remove or restrict access to books, Banned Books Week draws national attention to the harms of censorship. The books featured during Banned Books Week have all been targeted for removal or are restricted in libraries and schools. While books have been and continue to be banned, part of the Banned Books Week celebration is the fact that, in a majority of cases, the books have remained available, thanks to the efforts of librarians, teachers, students, and community members who stand up and speak out for the freedom to read. Family PATH:
30 Years of Service to the Community By Kelly Griffith-Fields PATH, People Attempting To Help, has been on a mission for 30 years now to serve the economically disadvantaged people of Smith County. With both emergency assistance and programs, PATH encourages and empowers them to become self-sufficient. Gertrude Windsor recognized a need in Smith County and began feeding the homeless and hungry herself from her back door. In 1984, at the age of 90, Mrs. Windsor dreamed of helping more of the disadvantage throughout the community; to reach those further beyond her back door. She began gathering together church and civic leaders to create an organization that would be a safe place for people in need of assistance. As a result of her vision in 1985, PATH began serving families in need. “Thirty years is an outstanding achievement of continuous service,” Development Director Mila Hightower said. What began 30 years ago as a community collaboration, continues today in much the same way. “Path is supported by 87 congregations throughout Smith County and is very volunteer driven,” Hightower said. For one week every September, PATH focuses on raising community awareness. September 7th-11th has been devoted to spotlighting PATH and its services that assist community members facing poverty, homelessness, or hunger to self-sufficiency. “This year we’re concentrating our efforts into one big event to do something to honor the 30 years of continued service,” Hightower said. Thursday, September 10th at 11:30am, a community celebration and luncheon will be held at Green Acres Baptist Church CrossWalk Conference Center. Larry James, CEO of CitySquare in Dallas, will be the keynote speaker for the event. Dallas’ CitySquare is a faith-based community development corporation. Through service, advocacy, and friendship, they help the community battle the causes and effects of poverty. James served as executive director of CitySquare for ten years before becoming CEO in September of 2004. James was confident that he was needed in the streets of Dallas’ innercity community. He and his wife, Brenda, have made their home there since 1999. Through his service and advocacy, James has become wellknown in the communities throughout Dallas as a social entrepreneur and committed servant to the disadvantaged of east and south Dallas. At the celebration, the Very Reverend Martin Luther (M.L.) Agnew Jr. will be honored with the Gertrude Windsor award. The award is presented to an individual who epitomizes the mission of PATH through both their words and deeds. The CrossWalk Conference Center is located on the Green Acres Baptist Church campus at 1607 Troup Highway in Tyler. Tickets for the celebration are $35. Statistics show that every three and a half minutes one of our neighbors walks through PATH’s doors needing assistance. Last year PATH provided assistance to 22,834 individuals. “We have neighbors throughout Smith County that need help and assistance in some way,” Hightower said. “PATH offers that assistance with kindness, dignity, and respect.”
Each individual or family that turns to PATH for assistance is assigned a caseworker. Caseworkers help to determine their specific needs and provide long-term guidance and support to meet those needs. The end goal of this guidance and support is to establish selfsufficiency and enhance the quality of life for the family or individuals. Caseworkers are able to assess and address issues that include living situations, financial trouble, physical and emotional health, addiction, parent/child resources, education, employment, and more. PATH offers a Transitional Housing Program that is designed to help low- to moderate-income families provide safe and affordable housing. At the same time, individuals participate in programs that lead to self-sufficiency. The housing program is designed to help families move into home ownership in 18-24 months. Their basic medical care offers dental appointments, eye exams, glasses, and help to afford prescriptions. PATH’s food pantry is one of the only food pantries serving the community Monday-Thursday, 8am-6pm. Its hours of operation make it one of the most convenient food pantries in the county. “About 140 people come through the food pantry a day,” Hightower said. Shelves are continually stocked with nutritious, nonperishable food items. Freezers and refrigerators offer changing selections of meat, fruit, and more depending on the donations received. Hightower explained that formula, diapers, and toilet paper are all items the pantry is in constant need of. “While it’s not glamorous, they’re often an overlooked necessity,” she said. Shoppers make their way through the aisles of the pantry to make their selections. They are then assisted with their bags of groceries by volunteers much like they would be when shopping at a local grocery store. PATH also works in conjunction with other local organizations to best meet the needs of the people. By reviewing their case, the caseworker may decide if another organization, such as the East Texas Crisis Center, Habitat For Humanity, Andrew’s Center, or others are better suited to help. PATH’s next specific charity drive will be Coats For Kids. It runs October 1st-31st to provide coats for Smith County children in preparation for the winter months. Last year 3,000 coats were donated and provided to children in need. New and gently used coats may be dropped off to area dry cleaners or directly at the PATH office. PATH is located at 402 W.
