The sun wakes in the eastern waves of the Atlantic Ocean, warms the sparkling sands and travels west over the lakes and rivers of the Piedmont region to the rocky western expanse. Melting into the wooded peaks and ascending majesty of the Appalachian and Great Smoky Mountains, the sunsets afford heavenly views from the worldrenowned Blue Ridge Parkway, which winds its way through the green mountain ranges of North Carolina. Hikers and camping enthusiasts never have to look far for contentment in North Carolina. Beautiful hardwood forests cover two thirds of the mountainous landscape, and one peak, Mount Mitchell, reaches 6,684 feet into the sky, making it the tallest peak in the state and eastern United States. North Carolina’s Piedmont stretches from the western mountain regions to the eastern shore. Some areas gather more than 30 inches of snow annually, making Piedmont a prime location for year-round recreation. Regional summers see low humidity and cool shady hideaways never lacking. Fishing, hiking, and picnicking maintain great popularity for summer adventurers, and skiing, snowboarding, and sledding is just around the corner with the winter snows!

Gulf Stream currents brush against the North Carolina coast and warm the elegant beaches and sand dunes. Jockey’s Ridge, a magnificent sand dune, is the highest along the eastern coast, decidedly one of the most romantic look outs onto the blue ocean. Local wetlands also offer beautiful picnicking spots and a great chance to view North Carolina’s diverse wildlife. Most famous for its Outer Banks, the 130 miles of North Carolina coast overreaches every vacationer’s dream. Secluded barrier islands present the perfect locations for shelling or just a quite day on the beach and water sports are always close at hand. Surfing, parasailing, and jet skiing are just a few of all the exciting opportunities. Museums, theme parks, and aquariums make the perfect day in town, and souvenir shops garland nearly every corner. Spas and cruises are always available for the most lavish retreats, but really, North Carolina itself is built on the natural luxuries of eastern US. Festivals and regional celebrations add even more excitement to the year in all regions of the beautiful North Carolina. So fill your photo albums with the memories of a lifetime, live your fantasies, and succumb to the great North Carolina expanses, where perfection is year-round. ¤

NORTH CAROLINA

Rejuvenation Destination: Hendersonville, North Carolina

If a destination with open spaces and outdoor adventure sounds enticing after a topsy-turvy 2020, immerse yourself in nature in North Carolina’s Blue Ridge Mountains. The town of Hendersonville serves up beautiful sunrises and sunsets, while thousands of acres of national and state forests provide a biodiverse playground. One of the most undisturbed regions in the Eastern U.S. is the Green River Gorge. Climbing for a cause is on tap at Green River Preserve within the gorge. Adventurers can book rock climbing sessions via Mighty Boots Wilderness Project, with a portion of proceeds donated to the preserve’s youth camp. Zipping through treetops with spectacular views is alternate option. The Gorge Zipline bills itself as “America’s steepest, fastest zipline tour,” consisting of a 1.25-mile course spanning 11 ziplines.

Outdoor adventure is the hallmark of DuPont State Forest. Miles of trails encourage hiking, biking and horseback riding, and several iconic waterfalls are in this beautiful 10,466-acre forest. A trail along Little River reveals three awe-inspiring waterfalls: Triple Falls, High Falls and Hooker Falls. Triple Falls appeared in two Hollywood blockbusters – The Last of the Mohicans and The Hunger Games – while the expansive pool below Hooker Falls is a popular swimming hole. Softer adventure awaits at Jump Off Rock. This mountaintop park, just five miles from downtown, is accessible by car and showcases a panoramic four-state view. Visitors often enjoy sunsets from this point, before heading back to town for dinner or an ale at one of six breweries in the downtown area. Even Hendersonville’s Main Street has a park-like feel. Wide sidewalks are dotted with brick planters, park

benches and shade trees. The S-shaped design of the street slows traffic and encourages people to walk about and visit the shops and restaurants. For information about Hendersonville, call 800-828-4244 or go to: VisitHendersonvilleNC.org ¤

SOUTH CAROLINA

Sun, Surf, Sand and South Carolina Tempt Travelers A mix of easy public access, private retreats and natural preserves highlights the 200 miles of Atlantic Ocean coastline that South Carolina calls its own. For generations, beach trips to millions of Americans and Canadians has meant an easy drive to Myrtle Beach and later, Hilton Head, while expanded air travel has added more international travelers in recent years. Reliable, decent weather year-round and a burgeoning menu of attractions and amenities continue to drive that growth in popularity. Starting from the north, Myrtle Beach anchors the 60-mile crescent of shoreline known as the Grand Strand. Characterized by long, sweeping stretches of sand and surf,

the Strand offers both bustling and less-boisterous choices for plopping that plastic chaise lounge and propping the umbrella. In Myrtle Beach proper, hotels old and new, restaurants and shops line the beach, with public access points interspersed. Then there are the ocean-side beach communities such as Cherry Grove and Atlantic Beach (considered perhaps the nation’s first predominantly African American beach town). Each offers varying degrees of public beach access and wide choices of hotel, cottage and condo rentals, as well as package deals with many of the golf courses on the Strand. Cozy Myrtle Beach and expansive Huntington Beach state

parks also offer beach access, camping, environmental education programs and more. Much of the coast is protected wildlife refuges until the Charleston area, itself a world-class destination for lovers of history and architecture but also home to popular beach destinations such as Wild Dunes Resort and the Isle of Palms to the north of town and Folly Beach and its popular public beach just to the south. Next up going south is storied Edisto Island. Live oaks draped with Spanish moss overhang the narrow highway across the big island to Edisto Beach, long beloved for its great shelling. The park also has a robust environmental education

center, camping and cabins. Then there’s the Beaufort area. The big park has four miles of beach, cabins and thousands of acres of maritime forest and marsh for exploring. It even has a historic, 100foot lighthouse. At the south end of South Carolina’s coast is Hilton Head, a golf and tennis haven. Hilton Head is world famous for its plantation resorts, which combine beachfront

dining, pools and cabanas with tennis, a range of accommodations and public and private golf. There are literally thousands of hotel rooms, condos, campsites and other accommodations along the South Carolina coast, as well as a myriad of dining, entertainment and educational options to help spice up the trip. -Marc Rapport

South Carolina’s Hammock Coast

Discover the quiet beach communities of South Carolina’s Hammock Coast: Pawleys Island, Litchfield Beach, Murrells Inlet, DeBordieu Colony and southern Garden City. Situated between Charleston and Myrtle Beach, the Hammock Coast boasts pristine beaches and salt marshes. Pawleys Island has been named one of the best beaches in the world, and Litchfield Beach, just north

of Pawleys, earned TripAdvisor’s designation as one of the Top 10 beaches in America! Murrells Inlet is the “Seafood Capital of South Carolina,” and the southern portion of Garden City overlooks Murrells Inlet and the Atlantic Ocean, offering stunning views in every direction. And DeBordieu, located near historic Georgetown, offers luxurious beach accommodations.

Don’t miss Brookgreen Gardens, a 9,127-acre botanical and sculpture garden, and Huntington Beach State Park, boasting the East Coast’s best birding area, prime campsites and access to an incredible beach. Nearly a dozen golf courses are here, too, three of which made Golf Magazines’ “Top 100 You Can Play.” For details, visit HammockCoastSC.com today. ¤ See back page
